Happy new year, everyone!

In anticipation of a year better than the last two have been, we cranked out a ripping issue to kick off 2022.

First up we have absolutely on-point stories from LCM’s first-rate crew of industry professionals. Andrew Tulloch has been living on the edge with some AEG equipment, proven he’s a sole man with Blundstone’s #984, and cut straight to the chase with EcoTeq’s MEAN GREEN Rival Battery-powered Zero Turn Mower and the Cub Cadet PRO X 648 Stand-On Zero Turn.

Meanwhile, Anna Turner’s continued her focus on getting quotes right, offering a few very salient thoughts on pricing up a job in a world where material prices have skyrocketed, and supply chains have crumbled. Naming a price which will still mean a profit on a job’s completion can be a tricky exercise when markets are so unstable, but Anna’s tips should help to considerably reduce the uncertainty of the exercise.

John Gabriele, as usual, has come up with some really excellent thoughts and ideas on lighting a landscape. It is easy to look across a garden or completed site on a sunny day and think, “Yeah. That’s really nice.” But planning to include lighting can make the area extremely attractive after dark as well, and, especially for families, that can add immense value to the project.

John has suggested we don’t forget the artistic and aesthetic possibilities of lighting in a landscape plan, and when you see the piece, you’ll straight away spot the potential.

Water is a huge consideration for all Australians, not just those living west of the

Great Dividing Range. Anyone who is not making water use along with conservation an integral part of any land-management strategy is making a serious error of omission. Marc Worner’s fired in an article with a sprinkling of ideas and thoughts on irrigation, sprinkler systems, pumps, and how those various facets of handling a very precious asset can fit together. In a clever alignment of ideas, Jonathan Garner’s piece on soil amending gives us the dirt on using existing soils for more water-efficient and sustainable landscaping.

Professional insight is all very well – and very much a part of LCM – but we have also devoted a little space to the celebration of our chosen industry. The LNA Master Landscapers Association has lifted the lid on its 2021 Landscape Excellence Awards, as well the 2021 Nursery and Garden NSW and ACT (NGINA) Industry

Awards were announced and the pages of the magazine fairly glow presenting the very highest levels of landscaping professionalism and achievement from the past year. Congratulations to all the awarded businesses and personnel. It makes us realise just how awesome it is to be part of such a worthwhile and important industry.

Big news for this issue! Landscape Contractor Magazine is now a Sponsor Partner of The Landscape Industries Association of Western Australia (LIAWA) and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.

There is a new year full of new challenges and opportunities waiting for us all.

Let’s get into it!

How to quote in 2022 to make a profit

Covid has thrown us some huge curve balls over the last two years (ahh, how has it been that long?!). One of the scariest, from this estimator’s perspective, has to be the volatility of prices, making it very hard to price accurately. It has forced me to change the way I price, so that I can be confident that the profit margin will be there when the job is actually built in six to twelve months.

First, let’s look at what is happening. Almost all imported material prices, including timber, fixings, even irrigation parts have gone through the roof. Not to mention steel. We all know that steel often fluctuates, it’s one price I check monthly, but the current price increases are mind boggling. I priced some 90x45mm TP timber last week that had doubled in price in four months!

Why? Suppliers are blaming it on supply chain issues. The cost of freight has increased dramatically, coupled with an increase in demand (we can’t complain about being busy) and a shortage of labour to make the products. It all adds up to the perfect storm of massive price hikes, which equals a massive hit to your profit margin.

So, what do we do about it?

The first thing to do is change the way you price:

Check prices weekly

It is usually good practice to check material prices in January and July, when most suppliers increase prices, but it’s not often enough at the moment. I currently check prices weekly to ensure I don’t get caught out with a big price hike.

Be very clear about price fluctuations

Make it super clear (front and centre in your cover letter) to the client that prices are increasing all the time so the quote will not be honoured after the expiry date.

Reduce the time quotes are valid for Most tradies send out quotes that are valid for 14-30 days, however we usually honour those quotes well after the quote date has expired. Not anymore. If the client wants to sign the contract after the quote validation date, run a quick check of the material

prices first and be sure to update your offer if the price increases have eaten into your profit margin.

Build the price increase into your quote Many of us price project for those that will not be built for twelve plus months after the contract is signed. It is very hard to pass the price increase onto the client once they’ve signed, so a method is to predict the increase and build that into the quote. This is a hard one to get right, because you can easily price yourself out of the work and/or underpredict the increase. A two to five per cent increase will at least take the sting out of the rising material costs.

Once the contract is signed you need to be proactive. Ordering materials early is a great option if the project is small and going ahead soon, however if the opposite is true be aware that it costs money to order

materials early. Not only do you need to pay for the material well before you need it (causing cashflow issues), but you also need to pay for storage and handling. In this scenario try to:

a) Get a bigger deposit

b) Try to store materials on site

c) Place a deposit order, but don’t take delivery - this way your price is set but you don’t need to worry about storage

Plan for labour increase

The last consideration to make is labour. We are all so busy and it is hard to find staff, so the cost of labour has started to increase, and I can’t see that changing any time soon. Be aware that your labour costs will increase over the next twelve to twentyfour months and make sure that is reflected in you quotes. Labour is usually the largest cost, so a small increase in costs will have a huge impact on your profits.

The good news is that we are all super busy, the market looks good, there is plenty of work to go around. So, with that

knowledge in mind, don’t be afraid to pass on the costs to consumers, or you will quickly find yourself working for free. LC

Shine a light

Extending the use of landscapes after dark can be achieved through the installation of effective outdoor lighting. Lighting can bring a whole new dimension to the built landscape. It is the artistic use of light in the landscape that makes this medium an integral part of good design while increasing functionality of the space.

Strategically placed lighting can dramatically highlight areas, features and plants. The aim is not to flood the landscape with light but rather to create intrigue and interest through selecting specific features within the landscape and highlighting them with subtle beams of light. External lighting can also play a significant role in providing security and safety to any landscape, but it is the artistic use of light in the landscape that makes this medium an integral part of good design while increasing functionality of the space.

Types of lighting

When it comes to selecting the type of lighting system the two primary options are Halogen or LED bulbs. LED are generally considered the better option in almost every category although halogen come up trumps in one very important class: upfront cost. Whilst halogen lights are cheaper, in the long run greater savings will be made with LED installations. LED bulbs have a superior energy efficiency and require replacing less often than halogen. The energy savings are quite significant with up to 75 per cent

less energy required to run LED systems. The decision to have to choose between halogen or LED may soon be removed as the Federal Government introduced the phasing out of halogen lights, making way

for a near-complete halogen lights ban in September 2020, but pushed back the introduction of new legislation to phase out halogen bulbs by 12 months to keep the policy in line with the European Union.

LED and solar powered lighting

External lighting has become a popular addition to landscapes and with advances in technology, garden or landscape lighting installations can be installed even on a minimal budget. LED lighting is the most popular type of lighting for external use and these days hard wired lighting is not necessary in many instances. Solar powered LED lighting can be effectively installed avoiding expensive installation costs associated with traditional grid powered lights. Solar lighting also delivers the energy

savings and reduced carbon footprints that many large-scale corporate projects now require, and residential clients often seek. The solar storage capacity of garden lights has improved as better models became available and can also be connected to a battery back-up to increase power and lifespan. Solar lighting is particularly useful in pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths and parks. There are solar LED systems that can also be programmed with motion sensors that allow for areas to be illuminated on demand. Features such as this in a

lighting installation are sympathetic to the surrounding environment and sensitivity of neighbours to light when an area is not in use.

Less is more

When installing garden lighting consider the principle of less is more. One carefully placed spotlight or spread light shining up into the canopy of a tree can be quite dramatic but when it is overdone the effect can be busy and uninviting. Ornaments and containers of plants also make striking features to highlight with a spotlight. The way the beam of light strikes an object in the landscape can also be varied to change the effect. Illuminate plants and objects by directing light upwards, downwards, and sideways before finally selecting the desired position as each direction of illumination gives a different effect. Lighting can also be varied at will to create a changing nightscape. Be mindful of spotlights projecting an upwards beam, as a beam of light projecting into

a tree canopy may look fantastic but light falling on a neighbour’s windows could be intrusive.

Pathways and steps

Garden paths and steps can be made inviting and safe at night with low voltage LED lighting installed along their length. Leave enough space between each lamp to gently cast light across pathways with a subtle luminescence. Bollard lights will cast light in a 360-degree pattern and are often placed at the beginning or end of a path as a focal point, guiding walkers in the right direction. There is common misconception amongst many people that you “shouldn’t see the light source,” but these days with the contemporary design and materials used in the manufacture of external lighting, they can actually add to the landscape rather than detract from it. Careful plant selection in these areas can also highlight pathways with grey or silver coloured foliage plants such as Lamb’s ears, Santolina or Liriope ‘Blondie’ or those plants with white flowers including Sweet Alyssum and Petunia which reflect light beautifully. Recessed lights installed into a path provide a soft upward light, but care needs to be taken in selecting recessed lights as they are not all designed to stand up to pedestrian traffic. Downlighting from fence posts or walls can provide the perfect illumination for walkways or property boundary lines and the light being cast in a downward direction provides for a more natural illumination effect.

Outdoor entertainment areas

Increasing the use of outdoors entertainment areas couldn’t be simpler than installing a set of string or bistro lights. Bistro lights with an Edison style bulb add a touch of elegance and ambience for entertaining, with dimmer controls available that can be operated from a smartphone app. Rope lights are another lighting alternative which come in a range of colours. Basically, they are clear long cylindrical tubes with a light source every few centimetres. They also can be used as garden edging and pathway lighting but are mainly used as a short term decorative light source. Rope LED lights are an easy installation but are not suitable for most accent lighting needs, and the quality of LED rope lights can vary dramatically but like most things price tends to match the quality.

Water features

Water features can be brought to life at night with subtle lights that capture and reflect the droplets or water curtain but avoid lighting waterfalls from behind particularly if this will direct the light towards the main viewing positions. Installing misting nozzles in a water feature or amongst the plantings will create a moving tapestry of sight and sound within the landscape which can also be enhanced with strategically placed lighting, particularly when coloured light is involved. Coloured lenses are available to add to the mystique but a simple white light on water is often the most effective. External and underwater lighting that illuminates both the structure of a water feature and the water

allows for greater drama between light and shadow, creates visual interest and movement and gives outdoor living areas more dimension at night. Water feature lights are available in both Halogen and LED but as previously indicated LED are considered the gold standard in most cases.

Landscape design and installation

As more people understand the importance of their outdoor space as an extension of the internal environment there will be greater demand for outdoor light installations in landscape design. Any outdoor lighting scheme needs careful planning and consideration as to the overall desired effect. Execution is critical to success; the aim of any outdoor lighting installation should be to achieve both security and aesthetics. Designing enhanced lighting schemes within a landscape will not only improve the aesthetics of the overall design, but it can also increase the functionality of the landscape and increase the value of a property. With so much to gain, why not light it up. LC

Irrigation

Irrigation is all about the useful things we do with water in the landscape. Water can be sourced from a mains tap or a water tank or indeed the best of both worlds, a combination of both.

Water storage tanks can be located underground or aboveground and come in all different colours, shapes and sizes and are made from different materials such as plastics and metal. What are the water collection points for water in the landscape Besides coming off the roof of a building when it rains or after seeping through soil profiles; we can also use what’s termed grey water. Grey water is all the wastewater that a home produces such as from the bathroom and laundry. Grey water systems can be retro fitted to existing facilities. A licensed plumber must install these systems.

NB: There are regulations governing the use of grey water and these include limiting any grey water use to sub-surface irrigation and it is not to be used on any fruit and vegetables growing.

Once the water storage question is sorted you need to consider what type of irrigation system to install. This is recommended to be installed by a licensed plumber and drainer to ensure your project meets certain criteria, which can differ from State to State. The system to install will depend on aesthetics, the clients’ budget, the runoff area, garden size, water pressure and

the desired outcomes from managing all this water.

There are two main types of irrigation systems:

• Sprinkler systems

• Drip irrigation Sprinkler

systems

The dimensions, size of lawns and gardens, and water pressure will determine the type and number of sprinklers that will need to be used. Consider local authority water restrictions too. If water use is not a consideration and large amounts of water

need to be applied in a short time frame or large lawn areas need to be maintained, then this is the type of system to install.

Try to link the sprinklers into different zones, if possible, as some areas of the garden will need to be watered more often than others.

For example, vegetable gardens will need more water than native plants. It may also be that you want the lawn to be watered at different times and rates to the garden.

The Hunter Solar Sync allows users to upgrade to a smart controller, providing daily automatic adjustments to a controller’s watering schedules based upon changing weather conditions. Visit https://www.hunterindustries.com/ for more information on this.

TIP: A rain sensor might be considered a good investment to avoid overspending and excess water usage. Timers, valves, and manifolds may need to be fitted to accommodate the different watering needs of the different zones.

For example, if it takes ten seconds to fill the bucket, then divide that into sixty (seconds in a minute) which is six and multiply six by nine (bucket size in litres) equals 54 litres per minute flow rate. The usable water available to you is 80 per cent of that total.

Specialist irrigation shops can work it all out for you.

Water pressure and pumps

Line lengths and number of sprinkler heads from the source also work against water pressure. Another way to combat water pressure or more precisely a lack of it, is to install a pump. Different pumps are used for different situations.

Flow rates

The simplest method I know to test the flow rate in litres per minute from your mains water source is this:

1. You need to time in seconds how long it takes to fill a standard bucket with water from the tap you will connect the system to

2. Then divide that into 60 (seconds in a minute)

3. Then multiply by bucket size in litres

You might find it easier to contact Toro. Toro has been in Australia for over 40 years now and has expanded to become the largest single supplier of irrigation products to the landscape, agricultural, turf care and domestic household garden markets. For more information visit www.toro.com.au.

TIP: To determine the minimum pressure for your sprinklers to work you need to know the flow rate. Once you know this you can design the system and the type of sprinkler heads to be used.

Drip or micro irrigation

The second type of irrigation system is drip or micro irrigation, and it is extremely water efficient. Drip irrigation:

• Uses much less water

• Minimizes evaporation

• Eliminates wind drift and overspray

• Reduces run off

• Delivers water directly to the roots of the plants which is the healthiest way to deliver nutrients to a plant

There are three main types of drip systems –

• Water weeping hose

• In-line drip tube

• Plug in drippers

Water weeping hoses weep water at a rate

TIP: On a slope they tend to weep more from the lower end of the hose and so do not give an even amount of water to plants along the hose length.

In-line drip tubes are poly pipes that have drip emitters built in at regular spacings. Netafim is the global leader in smart drip and micro-irrigation solutions and have been doing it since 1965. It is a great product choice for: greenhouses, large gardens, acreages, and irrigating crops. Their web site is www.netafim.com.au/.

TIP: I have found most clients tend to underwater their plants when using this system so after installation ensure there is a demonstration to show how long it takes for their plants to get sufficient water.

Plug in drippers can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed drippers can be set at a rate of two, four, and eight litres per hour while adjustable drippers can be set anywhere from two to forty-five litres per hour. The drippers may be plugged directly into low density poly pipe or connected via 4mm spaghetti tube cut at different lengths to suit

Drip irrigation.

Drainage

Now that we have determined the type of irrigation system required for the project, we need to consider how to deal with the water after application by drainage.

Remember, all drainage systems work because water always flows to the lowest point, which means that you need to design the system so that the drainage water will drain to the lowest point in your area in question – into a ditch, swale, dry riverbed,

underground storage unit or a soak away using plants which readily take up the water. To achieve this, all the drainage pipes must have a fall on them no less than 1 in 200 in the direction you wish the water to flow.

The most common type of subsoil drainage is in the form of a special pipe that is covered with a geotextile material. The pipe has a number of perforations through it to let the water through to be drained away. The geotextile material stops soil and other particles from going through to the pipe and clogging it up.

Because they are buried beneath the soil, drainage systems should be planned during the landscaping or building stage to get the best possible results.

Now if you’re running short of time like every landscaper I know, Reece has a great design service which will accept your proposed project online, its IAL-certified. Irrigation Designers tailor an irrigation plan specific to your needs and then your chosen Reece irrigation and pools branch will deliver your final quote and design. It’s then a matter of paying and pickup all what’s needed to carry out the job.

Soil amending

Exciting times indeed.

We’ve arrived at a time where governing bodies, science and industry all agree that working with the existing amended site soil will deliver a more durable, water efficient and sustainable landscape asset.

As I mentioned in my maiden article there are some exceptions to this practice such as contaminated sites, roof, or balcony gardens, engineered landscapes like high density residencies and other installations that are totally reliant on human inputs to ensure survival.

Although the practice of top dressing an unprepared site with a landscape soil blend prior to planting still occurs, most of us understand or have realised that the practice and performance of the garden is short-termed and unsustainable.

We’ll cover the reasons for this in future articles about landscape blends. In the meanwhile, let’s bring it back to the topic of site soils.

I personally love the challenge of creating a healthy growing media with the existing soil on hand. Although plants might not grow as fast as they would if they were in a lightweight, sand-based landscape blend. When the site soil is prepared properly to the needs of that species, they are more resilient

to adverse conditions, sturdier and much longer lived.

Our professional duty is to create a landscape asset that exceeds the lifespan of the surrounding structures. With this in mind, we need to implement the correct systems and provide the appropriate

resources to ensure plant longevity with useful life expectancies.

It’s possibly been a long time since you’ve acquainted this topic or perhaps it’s new to you. Either way, it never hurts to revisit topics relating to soil. One of the two most precious resources we have on Earth. The other being unpolluted water.

Keep in mind that we’re talking about soil, not dirt.

There are five main components that when combined, make a soil.

1. Mineral particles: elements that were never alive (rock and mineral fragments)

2. Organic matter: the remains of once living organisms or the refuse from living organisms

3. Living organisms: These critters range in size from tiny microbes, fungi, earthworms and right up to ground dwelling mammals like wombats, rabbits, rats etc

4. Water: The element of life in which nutrients for plants are dissolved to become available for absorption

5. Air: Fills the spaces and voids between the solid particles that are not filled with water

The variation in proportions of the five components, create the differences we see, feel and smell in soils. Plants aren’t that demanding from soil. All they want is their particular balance of water, air and nutritional elements. When air, water and nutrient aren’t in balance for a particular species then it may suffer drought from too much air in the soil or waterlogging from too much water in the soil. It may also

suffer drought and suffocation from no water and no air. This situation is usually due to layering or compaction but let’s leave these two avoidable nightmares for next year sometime.

Getting back to soil. There are generally four different types of soil with varying mineral particles and sizes that are the foundations of the soils we work with. Sand, silt, clay and the most desirable, loam. The quantities or proportions of these types is known as texture.

Sand

Sand consists of small particles of weathered rock. Sandy soils are one of the poorest types of soil for growing plants because of its very poor ability to hold nutrients

and water, this makes it hard for the plant’s roots to absorb water. Its gritty texture and tendency to fall apart in your hand makes it quite easy to identify. Although it’s useful for growing turf and many coastal native plants, it continually needs water and nutrients to sustain life.

Silt

Silt, compared to sand, has smaller particles which is made of rock and other mineral particles, these are smaller than sand. Silts are better at holding water, nutrients and are far more stable than sandy soil. Turf is grown on silty soil because of its stable nature and ability to hold water. Although it’s useful for the turf farm, the silt is often detrimental to the turf in the landscape. More on this in future articles.

Clay

Clay has the smallest particles of these three. The particles in this soil type are so tightly packed together there is very little air space. It’s heavy in nature and as most of us know, doesn’t drain well. It does, however, have an ability to hold nutrients and water. All good landscape soils should have a percentage of clay content somewhere between 15 per cent and 25 per cent.

I personally love clay-based soils. Providing they’re respected and never worked on when wet, they grow fantastic plants with much less resource input than sandy soils.

Loams

Loams are essentially mixtures of the first three. They are ideal for growing most plants. When you are aiming to create a loam,

the quest is to determine what soil texture you have then add the correct proportions of other soil types to achieve the desirable blend.

Loams are the happy medium. They generally contain approximately 40 per cent by volume sand, 40 per cent by volume silt, and 20 per cent by volume clay. Loam is well drained, it takes up and holds moisture, it holds nutrients and has a stable overall structure that is relatively easy to work. Loam with a generous quantity of organic matter is the ideal garden soil.

The soil texture triangle should probably be familiar to you.

Biological earth structure with agricultural clay, silt, loam and sand diagram.

The best method of determining percentages of your particle sizes is to perform a jar test. Jump onto the internet for instructions if you are not familiar with the test.

Amending your soil texture with other soils such as clay or silt to sand is achievable on smaller scales but keep in mind that the addition of sand to clay can be problematic indeed. Unless you can provide over one

third of coarse sand by volume to the clay, you are essentially making bricks. The tiny clay particles cling to the larger sand particles. The sand basically acts the same as gravel does in concrete. The best approach to amending clay soil is to allow it to dry, dress with 50 – 100mm of composted organic matter and break it open with an excavator, electric jackhammer with a clay spade or a hydraulic powered rotary hoe. Regardless of what approach you are embarking on, it is important to thoroughly blend the organic matter through the clay soil. If it is left in clumps it will interfere with water and air movement and root growth.

TIP: Remember the golden rule. Avoid working clay soil when it is wet.

Amending a soil is not the same thing as mulching, although many mulches also are used as amendments. A mulch is

left on the soil surface. Its purpose is to reduce evaporation and runoff, inhibit weed growth, and create an attractive appearance. Mulches also moderate soil temperature, helping to warm soils in the spring and cool them in the summer. Mulches may be incorporated into the soil as amendments after they have decomposed to the point that they no longer serve their purpose.

A soil amendment is any material added to a soil to improve its physical properties, such as water retention, permeability, water infiltration, drainage, aeration, and structure. The goal is to provide a better environment for roots.

What soil amendment and how much should I use? I hear you ask.

Let’s cover them in future articles, in the meanwhile, I’d be calling “Murray” our soil scientist.

Merry Christmas to you all. LC

Lower Costs and New Revenue Streams for Landscapers and Greenhouse Operations

Flispcreen is made to fit any carrier whether you have a backhoe, excavator, skid steer even a telehandler, Flipscreen will fit the bill and when you arrive on the job site you get to work immediately, no setup is required.

Compared to other attachments on the market, Flipscreen has the largest screening surface area of its class, which enables high-volume screening rates. Every 2.5 seconds, the material is inverted, falls

against the screen, breaking up lumps, and then travels across the mesh.

With most other “screening attachments”, as soon as the material is scooped, it will spill through the bucket. The Flipscreen’s base is like that of a standard bucket which is watertight, enabling the operator to slew the load without spilling or in the case of a loader, tram the material to a specific location before processing.

Many people worry about screening wet soil or clay. Well, the Flipscreen has a unique brush that clears the mesh on every rotation, ensuring effective screening regardless of the material. The Flipscreen is an industry leader in these conditions.

A Flipscreen requires almost no maintenance, and because you don’t need to shake it, you are avoiding premature bushing and housing wear to the carrier, helping to reduce maintenance

28 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > On the cover
As far as site machinery and tools go, some people feel that you can never have too many. However, some feel that being economical and conservative is best. Well, if that’s the case and you want to invest in something that has multiple uses and will support your bottom-line growth, then Flipscreen is for you.

and repair costs. The plug-and-play simplicity of the machine, and its utility on-site, make it a money-making companion, greatly appreciated by the contractors who own them.

The ability to recover fertile native soils from the rocky substrate is a great way to produce valuable standalone material or a good product to mix with other grades of soil. The Flipscreen rapidly separates the soil from rocks, sticks, and other waste, creating a clean, saleable product. Quickly change your mesh and now you can further screen the “waste pile” to produce a specific sized rock/gravel product. You can even use your screener to wash the rock if you have a large trough or water supply on-site. In addition to multiple different-sized screening meshes, we have developed a mixing plate cover with internal agitators that will allow you to mix cement or create seed or soil mixtures. Customers are using this cover to mix their high-grade topsoil with lesser-grade soil and compost to create a higher volume of material that they sell at a premium. Green waste can also be mixed and screened to create compost. The way the Flipscreen moves material in the bucket makes it great for comingling and blending, whether fitted with a normal mesh or the cover.

When turning up bulbs or pods, which have tiny roots, the soil sticks and goes to waste. Throw these in the bucket, engage the hydraulics and rotate until the soil has come loose. Greenhouses can recover soil

from plastic trays of seeds that have failed to germinate and even stumps can be cleaned of soil.

Have a pile of firewood that needs cleaning? Run them through the Flipscreen and you are left with dirt and bark,

a great source of compost, and a pile of clean firewood, ready for sale.

As a landscaper, you never know what material you may find on job sites, and the comforting feature of the Flipscreen, down to its design, is the ability to screen anything that you can scoop. Massive savings can be had on tipping fees and trucking by using the Flipscreen to process job site waste such as concrete, mixed rocks and soils, wood chips, and sod. Material recovered can often be used on the project.

Landscapers have spoken about the greatly reduced labour cost when using “freshly” screed topsoil in seed areas. The savings of which equals the soil cost by using fresh not compacted soil.

With a Flipscreen you now have a tool that many competitors don’t, which adds a greater service offering to prospective customers.

AEG Edger attachment with 18V and 58V powerheads

In the past I have used both the 18V and 58V AEG Power heads and line trimmer attachments supplied with them, as well as a hedger attachment and a pole saw attachment. Now available to add to the arsenal is a new edger attachment for those neat precise finishes or to reclaim overgrown edges so I was eager to try it out.

As with the other accessories in the range this edger attachment is suited to both the 18V and the 58V AEG powerheads. I think this is a great feature as rather than going out and purchasing a dedicated edger for $600 or more, existing AEG tool owners can add another tool to their kit for a fraction of the price at $199. In addition to that the storage space savings are huge compared to a dedicated edger with the AEG attachment taking up very little space.

The edger has a 204mm hardened steel blade that carved through the grass leaving a neat precise cut. An adjustable rear wheel sets the height/ depth of cutting and with a maximum depth of 31mm. The toolless adjustment is simple and fast and with the twist of a knob adjustments can be made in seconds. I found I was able to edge with the wheel both on the concrete curb or paver edging as well as with the wheel on the turf side. This is a great advantage as there are often obstacles on the hard

38 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH

surface side where you would normally run the wheel, so the 31mm depth allows for either depending on the situation.

The alloy guard over the blade is light but strong and a raised rib along its centre is in line with the out of view cutting blade giving the operator a guide to cut. A rubber flap attached at the rear of the guard also prevents excess debris flying out towards

the operator and a cut out notch in its centre also lines up with the blade. These two guides ensure easy line-up of the blade for accurate cutting.

The edger attaches easily to the powerheads with a simple press button locating in the shaft of the powerhead when inserted. A large easy grip knob can then be tightened to snugly secure the join.

These joins often fail and become loose on many combi unit systems, but the large knob enables the operator to secure it tightly with little effort.

The 58 volt powerhead spins the blade 600RPM faster than the 18 volt in both low and high speeds although I didn’t notice any difference in cutting performance. They were both weighted well whilst using the

edger attachment with the 58V obviously heavier. For this reason, I would prefer to have the 18V just for ease of use and have extra batteries on hand if I were doing large amounts of edging.

Both powerheads have two speeds changed with the flick of a switch on the side of the handle. I prefer the high speed although the lower speed would be good for short, manicured edges and also conserving battery life.

The rubber ribbed hand grip is very easy to hold, comfortable and ensures a solid grip on the machine. A variable speed trigger enables the operator to feather the throttle if required, a far cry away from the old battery gear where it was “flat out” or “off”.

The new AEG edger attachment would be a great addition to any AEG owners kit or anyone in the market for a line trimmer and edger with both tools available at a very decent cost. Additionally, the space saving for both storage and transport is very attractive to me. AEG offer amazing warranties on their gear, and this is no exception with a 6-year product warranty and a 3-year battery warranty, when registered within 30 days of purchase.

You can also get this edger attachment or any AEG power tools delivered and transacted to your jobsite via the AEG Onsite team. Reach out to them via www.aegpowertools.com.au/onsite or call Matt direct on 0438 110 636.

EcoTeq’s MEAN GREEN Rival Battery Powered Zero Turn mower

Battery powered landscape maintenance tools have improved massively over the past few years and even the hardcore petrol- and diesel-powered fans would have to acknowledge that “good quality” battery gear can compete with its traditional petrol and diesel rivals. Battery power is obviously the way of the future and with California banning the sale of petrol-powered outdoor machinery by 2024 makes me wonder that others might follow, and battery power might be the norm sooner than we think.

Whilst there are many commercial handheld battery tools on the market here, I don’t know of any other commercial battery zero-turn mowers, so I was super keen to give the Mean Green “Rival” a workout.

Mean Green have been manufacturing commercial Zeroturns in the USA since 2009, so this is not just a new product on the market, it has had some serious development over the years. Mean Green mowers are distributed here exclusively through Australian company ECOTEQ who have branches in every state with trained technicians and spare part backing.

At first glance the Mean Green Rival just looks like a tuff machine, it obviously resembles a conventional zero turn, but a closer look reveals many differences. As a comparison this model, the “Rival” is the equivalent to a 37Hp diesel machine, so it is no toy.

42 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH

The construction material of the Rival is quite different to conventional zero turns, both the machine and the fabricated 60-inch deck are aircraft grade aluminium, so it is incredibly strong whilst also lightweight. The batteries, consisting of 11 individual cells are housed in a sealed compartment within the rear of the machine and barely protrude past the back wheels so no large overhang like conventional machines. This greatly reduces the footprint eliminating rear damage which is often caused when an operator misjudges. It also means that this large sit-on machine, if only about the same size as a stand-on zero turn, is great for transporting multiple units or freeing up valuable transport space.

My first questions were what is the battery lifespan and what is the runtime? I was very nicely surprised. The batteries have a lifespan around 9000 hours so I think it would be safe to say they could outlast the actual machine. Also, having 11 individual cells means that if one cell is showing signs of depletion it can be changed individually. The batteries have no memory, so they can be charged at any point whether fully depleted or partially depleted and a full charge takes 12 hours so easy to do overnight after a full day’s work. Runtime is

the big question with any battery powered gear and the Rival will operate for seven hours on a full single battery charge. This equates to 15 acres per charge which is very impressive. Charge ports are located at the front and rear of the machine so either can be used.

The power and speed are something completely different to conventional zero turns. The Impulse Drive System gives instant power and at first you must be careful as it does 18.5 km/h and it gets there in 1.3 seconds, so if you push the control levers from neutral to full forward it stands up on the rear wheels and goes. It does take a bit of getting used to as the controls are so precise and light but after about half an hour of operation it was effortless. Hard to explain but conventional machine controls feel like you are pushing and pulling them to manoeuvre and the controls on the Rival feel like you are just guiding them, which makes them easy to get used to.

Of course, the benefits of greatly reduced noise, zero emissions, zero fuel costs and minimal maintenance costs would be attractive to anyone but it does come at a cost as these machines are quite a bit more expensive than their conventional opposition. The machine is so quiet, great

for noise sensitive sites and public places as well as being easy on the operator.

Ever increasing fuel costs are a thing of the past as are the endless engine maintenance consumables such as air filters, spark plugs and oil filters etc. Another huge advantage is that there are no deck spindles, pulleys, or belts to worry about. No greasing of spindles, no belts, or pulleys to replace, greatly reducing maintenance costs. Rather than spindles and belts to drive the blades there are three electric motors attached to the top of the deck in the place of traditional spindles. The cutting blade attaches directly to the motors drive shaft, the motor requires no maintenance, so the only consumable is the blades which are well priced.

I was concerned about damaging a drive shaft/motor when the inevitable happens and accidental contact is made with a foreign object and the associated cost. Apparently, the shaft of the motor can be changed out of the motor separately and the whole motor unit is not much more in cost that a conventional replacement spindle. It is also much easier to change with a few bolts and an electric plug-in cable.

The deck fitted was a 60-inch rear discharge with a mulching kit fitted. It cut and mulched very well leaving no residue on dry medium length grass. A side discharge deck is also available for this machine, as is a 52-inch deck.

There are two blade speeds that are changed with a touch on the control panel screen to suit mowing conditions. The

mower drive speed also has two settings changed with a touch on the screen as well. The touch screen allows the operator to also check battery charge, hours, any faults and set the cutting height. The touch screen allows heights to be changed in ¼ inch increments and the deck is lifted/ lowered via an electric ram. Foot controls allow the operator to raise/ lower the deck with a tap on either side of a rocker pedal in increments or hold in place to raise or lower fully to the pre-set cutting height. Just above the foot operated deck lift are three lights which indicate blade operation to the operator. All green indicates cutting height and speed are correct for conditions, yellow lights indicate cutting height is good, but groundspeed is too fast and red lights indicate speed and height are incorrect for conditions, so it basically warns the operator if they are pushing the machine too hard.

The front castor wheels are TWEELS so no downtime with flats. A fully adjustable suspension seat with adjustable arm rests keeps the operator comfortable.

I have to say that I would much prefer to operate a Mean Green Zero-turn over a conventional Zero-turn as they are quiet, much more responsive in their controls and easier to manoeuvre. There is no compromise on performance or cutting quality and the minimal running and service costs are a great advantage. Ecoteq offer a 2-year limited mower warranty and a threeyear limited battery warranty.

I remember about ten years ago, a few of the big American zero turn brands tried to introduce stand on mowers to the Australian market with little success. Now, in the last few years, stand on zero turns are gaining massive popularity in the Australian market and many of the big American brands are releasing their newest stand on versions over here. Cub Cadet is one of these adding the PRO X 648 to their commercial line up and it has some great features.

The PRO X 648 is fitted with a 48-inch fabricated deck constructed from 10-guage steel with 7-guage top and bottom reinforcements. Access to the top of the deck is quite good with the deck dropped down allowing for general maintenance procedures. The two outer spindle covers remove easily without tools and have open ends at the bottom of the cover which results in less accumulation of debris around the pulley and belt.

A neat even cut was achieved with the grass being expelled well, conditions were dry and medium grass length. Powering the PRO X 648 it the ever reliable and proven Kawasaki FX691v that produces 22HP and is fitted with a dual stage canister air filter. Access for maintenance on the engine is excellent with ample room to remove spark plugs and oil filter, although the quick drain oil hose is a nice feature, it could be a little longer to easily drain into a container. Separate 12cc Hydro pumps and 240cc Parker wheel motors, drive the machine to a top forward speed of 16km/h and reverse of 8km/h.

The controls are smooth and responsive creating a nimble machine which was easy

to guide around obstacles and tight situations but also great in a large open park area at speed, where we also tested. A front and rear solid bar either side of the control levers enables the operator to form a solid grip whilst driving and manoeuvring, with the control arms resting on the from bar when in full forward position.

From the operators position everything is in easy reach; the deck lift arm and height adjustments which is a simple side pin system. The fuel gauge on the left is easily seen and the throttle, hour metre/service digital panel and blade engagement are at your fingertips on the dash.

WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU 47

The battery is stored under the right-hand side cowl which is easily removed without tools and the cowl has a phone/storage compartment and bottle holder in its top. The operator’s platform has an adjustable suspension system with three settings of varied strength to suit any operator with a lever on the left-hand side beside the engine allowing the simple adjustments.

The cushioned operators leaning pad is very comfortable and has three height positions allowing the operator to adjust to suit, no tools are required for this adjustment and when removed completely it gives excellent access to the hydraulic oil reservoir and hydraulic oil filter. When removed it also gives excellent access to the underside of the dash which is often a problem spot. Below the leaning pad is another removable panel that also gives excellent maintenance access to the hydraulic pumps and enabling simple tool-less disengagement of drive if needed.

Large 24-inch rear tyres are fitted for good ground clearance although the rear platform did come into contact with the gutter whilst carefully curb hopping. The front castor wheels are flat free design, which is always a nice touch I think, reducing any down time.

I found the Cub Cadet PRO X 648 to perform well; a nimble, comfortable, and solidly constructed machine which is backed by a very impressive warranty. Cub Cadet offer a three-year commercial warranty on both the engine and the machine and a five-year warranty on the deck.

BLUNDSTONE #984

I have been wearing a pair of Blundstone #992 work boots for the last ten months and have been very happy with them, so I was extremely keen to give the new #984 unisex boots a workout. These boots have all the great safety features Blundstone are renowned for but are just a little bit fancier and if you keep them clean, they will look just as great at home, at the Pub or recreational pursuits as well as on the worksite.

The upper of the boot is a stylish stone coloured Premium Nubuck that is also water resistant, an essential feature in work boots for our industry. The rubber outer sole has an aggressive tread pattern that has been designed for grip in varied situations. I wore the boots on a worksite with varied surfaces including mulch, gravel, soil, and some wet sloping grass. In addition to this I wore them at home when I had to fix some pool heating pipes on a tiled roof and had no slip issues in either situation.

These boots are electrical hazard resistant, and the soles are extremely protective being heat resistant to 300 degrees Celsius. Additionally, they are resistant to oil, acid and organic fat giving the occupant of the #984s protection in extreme conditions and piece of mind.

A moulded TPU bump cap on the toe eliminates the usual leather wear that

50 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH

occurs on steel toe boots and there is also an extended heel moulded cap for extra protection at the rear of the boot.

As these boots are unisex and are designed for both men and women, there is a huge size range available from 3-15 in addition to half sizes available from 7.5-10.5.

I am a big fan of the lace-up design with zip access. This gives all the support of a lace-up boot along with ease of access and removal. The lace up section has seven eyelets with a lace locker on the fifth, enabling the wearer to loosen the laces from the top two eyelets, keeping the bottom five secure. This gives extra access when removing or accessing the boot as well as room for removal

of the footbed without having to re-tie the entire lace setup. The zip is heavy duty construction and slides easily. There is also a Velcro fastener to keep the tag of the zip secure in its upper position.

The boot height is 150mm from the sole up the occupant’s ankle and fastens very securely and firmly giving great ankle stability and support. The tongue is well padded as is the collar of the boot which felt very comfortable even when secured tightly. The interior of the #984 consists of a thermal regulating bamboo lining which keeps your feet cool as well as an anti-bacterial, breathable, and washable footbed. This footbed has a slight arch for comfort as well as an XRD® Extreme Impact Protection forepart pad for added comfort and protection. An additional Extreme Impact Protection pad is constructed into the heel of the boot under the footbed, this gives extra protection in this high impact area, ensuring comfort.

Often when you purchase a new set of work boots, they can be uncomfortable and it takes a while to wear them in, but these #984 boots were so comfortable straight out of the box, as were my pair of #992s previously. The boots are so light for such a big robust boot and it’s easy to forget that they are steel caps. Other boots I have worn in the past, required me to remove them after work for the drive home but in these Blundstones, I had no problem wearing them all day as well as after work. Blundstone offer a 30-Day comfort guarantee and a 6-month manufactures warranty.

Choose the voltage that suits your work

For instance, the AEG 58V Backpack Blower weighs just 8.6kg, utilises VORTEX Air-Flow Technology that pulls in air from multiple directions whilst keeping noise levels to an extremely low 59dB. Yet it blasts out a max. 700CFM and max. 260km/h air velocity.

The double-point harness offers users higher levels of support and comfort. It also has cruise control and a turbo boost button when you need that extra bit of grunt.

Also added to the 58V range is the 26cm Brushcutter, with its high-performance brushless motor that delivers more power and longer runtimes. It comes in a kit with a metal tri-blade, a 4.0Ah battery and charger, as well as a bump feed head that quickly turns it into a line trimmer for lighter work.

What’s more, it’s aluminium split shaft design allows landscapers to break down the unit for transport and storage, or add either an articulating hedge trimmer or pole pruner.

This combination of brushcutter, line trimmer, and optional attachments, gives landscapers added versatility without having to shell out for additional skins, batteries or kits.

Over in the 18V range (running off the same battery platform as your AEG power tools) is the 2 x 18V (36V) 18” FUSION Lawn Mower.

A major advantage of the 36V FUSION brushless motor is that it senses when you need higher performance through its loadsensing technology, giving the mower more grunt on demand. It has three cutting modes – catch, mulch or side throw. It also offers a wide range of cutting heights from 18-75mm for that desired finish.

Being battery-powered, it’s quieter for early starts and because there’s no fuel or oil to spill, it can be stored or transported vertically (the steel handles fold down) and almost no maintenance needed on an ongoing basis.

Another tool in the ever-growing and increasingly popular 18V range is the Brushless Line Trimmer. It features a rearmounted outer rotor motor that provides greater tool balance and maximum torque for tough applications.

Two speed settings with variable speed trigger control give you the flexibility to match the speed to the application. Its aluminium split-shaft design is light weight, durable and compact to store. It’s easy-wind, bump head design distributes line quickly and replenishment is simple. Machine-cut gears reduce vibration and fatigue.

A great addition to the 18V range is the market-leading Jet Blower with 465CFM air volume and 200kmh air speed. This blower is designed for moving large piles of dried leaves or blowing mulch back into garden beds.

AEG have recently launched a plethora of new products including:

• 2X18V (36V) FUSION Post Hole Digger delivering petrol like performance with 72Nm of torque, but without the hassles of exhaust fumes, excessive noise, spark plugs and pull cords

• 18V FUSION Secateurs with 1-second cutting cycle and up to 30mm cut capacity

• 18V Brushless Pruning Saw; ideal for when Secateurs are too small and a Chainsaw is overkill

Finally, a range of attachments including: 204mm Edger Attachment, 254mm Pole Saw Attachment and 500mm Articulating Hedge Trimmer Attachment; compatible with both 18V & 58V powerheads.

So, you see, there are plenty of reasons to explore the 18V range along with the offerings in 58V.

AUTOMOWER® Robotic lawn mowers from Husqvarna

In 1995, Husqvarna launched the world’s first robotic lawnmower, the revolutionary Automower®. Today, more than two million gardens all over the world are home to a robotic mower from Husqvarna. Day and night, rain or shine, Automower® can be relied on it to be out there doing its job, running effortlessly by itself.

Husqvarna Automower® 550 and 535

AWD are the first robotic mowers developed specifically for green space professionals. Whether you manage sporting fields, golf courses, parklands, or private property, you can rely on Automower® to provide impressive, healthy, and premium cut lawns. Equipped with professional controls for simplified interaction and remote control and surveillance through HUSQVARNA FLEET SERVICES™, these well-appointed robotic mowers were designed for landscaping and green care companies, with the aim of improving lawn quality and sustainability, while reducing costs and free up your workforce to focus on more complex tasks, such as hedge trimming or tree care.

The Professional Series takes all the benefits of Husqvarna’s domestic robotic lawnmowers, with additional design features for commercial use. These mowers can tackle lawns of up to 5000m2, steep slopes of up to 70%, and with an area capacity of up to 208m2 an hour. Ultra-silent drive wheel motors in the robotic mower limits noise levels to just 58-62 dB(A). This provides the ability to cut silently day and night without disturbing park users or residents of nearby areas, for great-looking lawns around the clock. With the ability to cut 24/7, and so quietly, makes Automower® ideal for maintaining grounds at hotels, libraries, cemeteries, parks and gardens and the like.

To easily handle complex areas the Professional series of Automower® has a variety of features, such as Penta-search, triple guide wires, and automatic passage handling. Penta-search means five search methods to find the charging station, and triple guide wires enable the mower to handle complex areas. The Automatic passage handling feature guides the mower through narrow passages, allowing it to navigate through the most complex of spaces.

For improved lawn health, GPS-assisted navigation and a weather timer help ensure

uniform coverage of complex lawns, while automatically adapting the mowing frequency to lawn growth. Due to the mowers self-fertilizing cutting technique, the lawn does not require as much fertilization when compared with other conventional mowing equipment, Husqvarna Automower® cuts a bit at a time, but more often, which creates a denser, greener lawn that also prevents moss and keeps down weeds.

Automower® 550

This is optimized for lawns with a capacity of up to 5000m2 and can handle slopes of up to 45 per cent (24°). Landscaping and green care companies can control Automower® via HUSQVARNA FLEET SERVICES™ or via an app on their phone. Connectivitiy between the user and the mower is achieved through cellular networks or Bluetooth capabilities, while Automower® 550 handles all types of lawns with perfect cutting results – even in rainy conditions. Remote Object Detection minimises the mowers impact on any obstacles encountered during mowing, whilst the robust construction ensures durability and reliability. With our commercial user interface, Automower® 550 is equipped with a status LED indication and a sturdy and easy to manage switch for START / STOP functionality which makes it’s use in public open spaces ideal. The commercial user interface also simplifies its use for inexperienced operators as well as ensuring minimal interference from the general public in case of vandalism.

Automower®

535 AWD

This mower takes slope handling to another level. This quiet, connected mountain climbing lawnmower is designed for professional use, and manages 70 per cent (35°) inclines and rough terrain – with zero direct emissions and top performance. This all-wheel-drive robotic mower features technology that optimizes the control of each wheel in order to enable superior operation even in the most demanding of areas.

With an impressive slope performance, Automower® 535 AWD rewrites the rules for autonomous maintenance of green spaces, improving the safety of your workforce. A pivoting rear body design enables truly excellent manoeuvrability for navigation on complex lawns and through passages while considerably enhancing traction in rough terrain. The mower is also equipped with remote object detection feature. The Ultrasonic sensors, means that the 535 AWD robotic mower reduces its speed as soon as it senses a nearby object. For extra robustness, wheel brushes and a rubber bumper have been added to the body.

Husqvarna Professional Automower® series is available to purchase from your local Authorised Husqvarna Elite Automower® Dealer.

JR Machinery appointed representative of Energreen products in Australia

Energreen is a world leader in manufacturing a range of remote-controlled slope mowers otherwise known as tool carriers and ILF mobile wheeled units.

Robo Range

Robo is a constantly evolving range of remote-controlled tool-carrier machines, designed to offer different solutions and to face different needs of work especially on slopes and, as consequence, increase productivity.

Safety is one of the fundamental points, the machines do not directly expose the operator to risks induced by work activities such as: noise, vibrations, exposure to exhaust gases, overturning of the vehicle, projection of materials, etc.

JR Machinery have the following range to choose from including ROBO MINI 23 HP petrol engine, ROBO EVO 40 HP, ROBO MIDI 60 HP Turbo, and ROBO MAXI 75HP Turbo.

All ROBO Energreen remote-controlled models are also known as tool carries and have the ability to mount 25 different attachments, making them one of the most versatile remote-controlled machines on the market in Australia. Robo range of remote-controlled slope tool carriers would be a suitable solution for Government departments, councils, arbortist, vegetation management, firebreaks clearing, roadside maintenance, steep terrain, mowing contractors etc.

Robo features

The Robo full range have a list of features built in, which make them easy to maintain and service the engine, along with the hydraulics system.

Tracks

Super rubber tracks are 280mm wide and a fully offset angle rubber track of 45 degrees, so the machine will not slide down the slopes. The tracks are hydraulic adjusted with rollers on top and bottom greaseable, with a hardened steel drive sprocket.

Engine

The YANMAR diesel engine range is now STAGE 5 and is the latest fit, in the Energreen range of slope mowers. YANMAR diesel engines have been designed for Energreen with a new redesigned engine oil sump for slope mowing which will be capable of up to a 55-degree angle in any direction.

These Energreen machines are equipped with sturdy telescopic arms with working distances between 5.5 and 17 metres whereby it is possible to apply various professional equipment for the care of road

and river green, the reclamation of green and forest areas, the winter road, the earth moving and railway services.

ILF machines were born to introduce an innovative working method.

The ILF range includes mobile 4WD, 4-wheel steer, fully hydrostatic drive, airconditioned cab, and a 90-degree rotational cab which works in either direction making a productive mowing day.

The cabin is certified in terms of safety by FOPS-ROPS tests against the risk of overturning and falling objects, is adequately soundproofed, equipped with an efficient air conditioning system, and equipped with all those requirements necessary to ensure the operator a working environment that is safe and comfortable. The rotation of the cab allows the mowing of the grass in both directions, without the need to turn the machine with a significant reduction in time and labour costs. The rotated cabin allows the operator to maintain a correct body posture, avoiding stress and back or neck problems, as well as managing the work in great comfort and attention.

The ILF range models have a 173 hp to 220 hp. They can operate reach mowers, and road barrier mowing at the same time.

A complete full range of attachments are available to suit the ILF range of mobile units.

The ILF machines can install a reach mower up to 17 metres on some models.

The ILF Alpha can fit forest mulchers to 11 metres high and a three-blade circular saw, two metres to cut vegetation and mow under the road barrier at the same time.

Energreeen ILF models can be factory fitted with the hydraulic railway wheels attachment so it would allow either side of the railway line banks to be maintained

EcoTeq Electric ZT Commercial Mowers

Zero Emissions. Performance without Peer.

Going green is no longer a fad. Sustainability and the impact of climate change is up for public scrutiny like never before. Many Australian organisations and consumers are pledging to “do their bit” much sooner than the 2050 zero emissions target announced at the 2021 COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. That pressure is now being felt by landscape contractors and operators, encouraging proactive green action.

It makes good sense. We are now at a time in history that is comparable to the turn of the last century, where cars were seen as the future and would replace the old horseand-cart. We are already seeing increasing uptake of electric vehicles and equipment, as they replace their fossil-fuelled predecessors. And the benefits are significant. Transitioning just one fossil-fuel-powered commercial zero turn mower to an electric equivalent model, is comparative to removing approximately 140 cars from the road each year.

Be the change – without compromise

Manufactured by Mean Green in the US on the back of more than a decade of research and development, EcoTeq’s range of mowers deliver maximum power coupled with low noise and zero emissions. So, there is no longer a compromise to performance or productivity when you make the transition to electric.

In energy terms, electric motors convert electricity to motion three times more efficiently than internal-combustion engines do with petrol. In most cases, electric motors perform much better than their combustionpowered equivalents, experiencing:

• Increased levels of torque

• Longer run-times

• Reduced maintenance costs, typically just five per cent that of petrol-powered equivalents

• A significant decrease in operating costs, typically only 10-20 per cent the cost of fuel

• Much lower noise output

Purpose-built from the ground up, EcoTeq’s mowers are 100 per cent electric; not converted from heavier petrol or diesel models. They are constructed from corrosion-resistant, lightweight aircraft alloy, which means they require less power to move, delivering faster speeds of up to 18.5km per hour, and the battery life to power you through a full days work.

EcoTeq VANQUISH: Up to 10 acres of continuous mowing on a single battery charge

Engineered for outstanding endurance and manoeuvrability, the EcoTeq VANQUISH is an electric mower built for all-day professional use with cutting widths of 52" or 60".

VANQUISH delivers seven and half hours of continuous mowing on a single integrated battery charge – up to 10 acres – at speeds of up to 18.5km/hr, making it the ideal choice for maintaining mid-sized public spaces.

EcoTeq RIVAL: Up to 15 acres of continuous mowing on a single battery charge

Engineered for power, versatility, stability, and comfort, the EcoTeq RIVAL is an excellent all-round choice for community mowing needs.

Operable with your choice of a 52" or 60" deck, each charge delivers up to seven hours of continuous run time and speeds up to 18km/hr, allowing operators to mow up to 15 acres per shift.

EcoTeq RIVAL also features an ergonomically designed customisable high-back suspension seat to ensure

optimum operator safety and comfort levels at all times.

EcoTeq EVO: up to 30 acres of mowing on a single battery charge

The flagship mower in the EcoTeq range, EVO is engineered to make light work of maintaining even the largest public spaces.

Coupled with its expansive 74" deck and delivering up to eight hours of run time at speeds to a maximum 21km/hr, it allows operators to mow 20-30 acres in a standard shift.

If you want a quiet, low maintenance, zero emission mower capable of cutting large areas all day long, put EVO at the top of your list.

Make the transition today

Don’t be left with the horse and cart of the 21st Century. Be the change that the next generation is demanding, and transition to EcoTeq electric today.

Take full charge of the first all-day electric commercial zero-turn ride-on mower bought to you by Gravely

Powered by the industry’s first swappable lithium-ion battery system, the Pro-Turn EV batteries were designed with flexibility in mind.

Unlike other electric machines which contain heavy batteries that makes swapping over hard, the Pro-Turn EV features four smaller and lighter rechargeable batteries, making swapping them easy, all whilst providing the same amount of power. The Pro-Turn EV also produces less emissions and less noise than petrol-powered commercial mowers.

You can save more on money and time with the Pro-Turn EV. Thanks to its energy efficient lithium-ion batteries, commercial mowing has been made more cost-effective over the machine’s lifetime, compared to the cost of purchasing petrol to power traditional commercial mowers. Users should also see less time spent maintaining their machines, as electric mowers require less maintenance due to containing fewer moving parts.

Featuring a foldable, rollover protection structure that protects the operator in the unlikely event of flipping, and a failsafe braking design which automatically applies the brake when the operator is not present, the Pro-Turn EV offers the highest level of safety. With the added advantage of a high back comfort seat with suspension combined with transaxles that are driven with a brushless electric drive motor that reduces vibration, this all combined ensures the user has all-day comfort while operating the mower.

The Pro-Turn EV is distributed by Masport here in Australia and is backed by a 5 Year/1500 hours commercial warranty, offering you piece of mind and promising you the quality, performance, and value you would expect from any Gravely zero-turn mower.

Is my insurance policy right for me

Insurance can be seen like the equipment you purchase to use on a day-to-day basis. Would you buy a cheap piece of equipment that you know will not last as long or be as reliable as the more expensive piece? It’s the same with an insurance policy; you don’t buy one that costs less but won’t respond in the event of an incident.

The horticulture and arboriculture industry are specialised industries and as such, require a tailor-made policy. Many policies have exclusions on them that will not respond in the event of an incident occurring. It is important to read your policy to know exactly what you are covered for and more importantly, what’s not covered. What sort of exclusions are placed on your policy?

Common exclusions, sometimes in small print, in the horticulture industry include:

• A restriction on the height of the tree you can cut down

• Locations where you can work

• Exclusions on use of sub-contractors that may leave you vulnerable to a claim

• Are you or your employees adequately qualified so that your policy will respond?

• Powerline clearing or line clearing work

• Design or Professional Indemnity exclusions

Insurance is complex — there is a myriad of policies on the market, and by using a broker, you can relax — we will do all the homework for you.

Winners announced at 2021 NGINA Industry Awards

Anita Campbell, NGINA CEO said the calibre of nominees was truly outstanding and have once again raised the bar which is even more amazing considering what a hard year it has been. “This year has brought with it many challenges. The pandemic is still here, and businesses have had to endure lockdowns and ever-changing restrictions.

“In saying that, some members absolutely excelled this year and NGINA is delighted to recognise the individual efforts and contributions of these industry representatives across a wide range of categories. The standard of entries was exceptionally high and each and every one of this year’s finalists could have taken

home a prize for excellence in the nursery and garden industry”, said Ms Campbell.

This year’s NGINA Industry Award winners are: Wholesale/Production Nursery of the Year: Scotts Tubes

The judges of this category said that while the finalists all set a high standard for the industry to follow, Scotts Tubes stood out as the winner for the second year in a row. It’s great to see a family combining forces so harmoniously to continuously improve efficiency, productivity and working conditions for their staff. Each sibling has clearly defined roles and work together to support each other and the business as a whole.

The results in the main market shares (tubes and herbs) were both very unforgiving. With little room for error, the results spoke volumes to the effort Scott Tubes put in, their adaptability and attention to detail.

They have utilised available space and resources to maximum effect and if the new greenhouse provides an indication of the quality of future development, the next few years look very exciting.

Retail Nursery of the Year (Trading Member): Burnetts on Barney

According to the judge Burnetts on Barney, at Kiama on the NSW South Coast, is a very unique business. They have really embraced the recycled, reuse strategy

The winners of the 2021 Nursery and Garden NSW and ACT (NGINA) Industry Awards were announced at a sell-out gala celebration at Rydges Norwest. and sustainability. Many of the fixtures and fittings have been built from totally recycled materials with the retail display centre being made from shipping containers. They are placed in a U shape which creates a little courtyard area and there is plenty of seating and tables for people to relax or for whenever events are held. The café is in situ and ready to be opened soon. The judge was particularly impressed by the community involvement with their crop and swap initiative called ‘Grounded Gardeners’ and their connection with local garden clubs and school children. They recently won a business award for excellence in sustainability. Burnetts on Barney is on an upward trajectory.

Retail Nursery of the Year (Corporate/Enterprise Member): Burbank House and Garden

According to the judge, it was a lovely surprise and a pleasure to enter Burbank House & Garden. The centre is immaculate, and the range of indoor plants and products is exceptional. The standout with this centre is the quality of the products, both greenlife and non greenlife which is very modern and on trend. The merchandising is well organised and professionally displayed. Vickey and her team are helpful and friendly. Staff were all helping customers and offering advice and good service. Producing catalogues, a loyalty program and workshops ensure customers continue to support them.

Allied Supplier of the Year: Vegepod

According to the judges, Vegepod has developed a unique product with innovative features that delivers value to their identified customer segment. Vegepod product development used design thinking and empathy maps, thus challenging assumptions to define the end consumers’ needs. Vegepod offer in-store displays and is a NDIS registered supplier, conducts interviews, is active in social media and presents at local and international shows. This engagement flows through to their workplace, with business development and personal growth of their team being top business priorities. Vegepod should be congratulated for researching the importance of product performance and customising their products so individuals can enjoy gardening regardless of their age or ability.

Industry Bloomer –Jessica Watson from Welby Garden Centre

The judges felt it was a great privilege to judge this award and to meet such fine young people. The standard across all the nominees had all the earmarks of a judges nightmare. Many of the finalists have even stepped up into management roles and are co-ordinating groups of staff to achieve different tasks across the workplaces. All are bringing a level of enthusiasm and commitment that puts the future of the industry in younger hands. The judges were impressed that Jessica has expanded her skills remarkably over the past year and has regarded the challenges brought about by the pandemic as a series of opportunities, rather than causes for doom and gloom. We admired the diversity of her contribution: the way she worked with the special employees at the garden centre, the way she had used and expanded her talents in IT and web promotion, the work she was putting into the local community garden, bush regeneration and the creation of an indigenous garden.

Apprentice of the Year: Philip Clark

The Apprentice of the Year criteria is aligned with that of the NSW Training Awards. The standard of candidates was outstanding and according to the judge, all finalists demonstrate incredible passion and show the key attributes required to be successful in this industry. Judging was also influenced by the employer who provided examples of extraordinary initiatives by their apprentice.

According to his manager, Phillip has an excellent work ethic, is constantly sourcing information and has taken on responsibility for an IPM project for which he has also developed quality resources.

NGINA is the peak representative body for operators in the nursery and garden industry and is committed to a growing,

united and sustainable nursery and garden industry that promotes its contribution to the health and wellbeing on the NSW/ACT economy, its environments and people. The NGINA Industry Awards are decided by an in-depth judging process that is carried out by a panel of industry experts and a band of mystery shoppers. LM

The Landscape Industries Association of WA (LIAWA)’s bright future

The Landscape Industries Association of WA (LIAWA) is forty-three years old and from its humble beginnings back in 1978, with a member base of just a handful of local contractors, it has seen the highs and lows, in its turbulent journey to say the least, but is now on the rise after being resurrected to becoming a successful association that represents landscapers along with being recognised by government in Western Australia.

A few years earlier in 2018, LIAWA was struggling with low member numbers and small executive however with a final last-ditch attempt to save LIAWA, the then President, Jenny Revell met with Matthew Lunn, who at the time was overseeing the Nursery and Garden Industry of WA, as their CEO, for his thoughts on how to resurrect LIAWA.

Matthew was quite clear that LIAWA was a sleeping giant and that it had never reached its full potential. With strong mining, housing and a raft of government infrastructure programs popping up across the state, there was a vast amount

of work and money floating around the WA economy, which in turn the landscape industry could gain benefit from.

By October 2018, Matthew agreed to join LIAWA in a part-time capacity as their new Executive Officer and immediately set about rebuilding and recruiting the admin, marketing, and financial support staff as well as new committee members to be part of the new look team.

“I knew from the outset this was going to be a tough road ahead but if we could keep ourselves intact by the new financial year, we would then have some new revenue coming in to kick start

WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU 75 > Association news

rebuilding LIAWA,” said Matthew. “With the association having little money in the bank and a disengaged membership meant the focus immediately had to be on membership and raising revenue quickly so that impactful changes could be made,” commented Matthew.

Some three years on LIAWA is not just surviving, but thriving, with membership rapidly growing and a list of sponsors who are supporting the new look LIAWA.

Matthew explained, “It’s been a remarkable turnaround and with the association now making a yearly profit, we are able to plough these funds back into the organisation and its members, so that the organisation can grow.

“Our vision is now to finalise a threeyear strategic plan that will encompass creating a self-regulating program known as the Master Landscapers program. This program will then aide our long-term goal to gain government recognition in an industry, that still continues to get bad press over poorly constructed landscapes by a handful of inexperienced operators.”

LIAWA delivers a range of member benefits, and it has been the delivery of

these that has got LIAWA back on its feet and has the industry talking.

“Our first job was to rebuild our web page and make this available to the public so that they could find a professional. For our members, we created a hub of information including the launch of the Rates Book along with four industry nights a year including guest speakers from key notable businesses adding a strong return of investment for a member and their staff. Trade nights support our key trade suppliers and sponsors.

A show garden at the Perth Garden Festival created public awareness. Finally, an annual contractor’s forum provides vital support to our commercial group,” explained Matthew.

More recently LIAWA has launched its own podcast, ‘The Green Thumbs Up’, to build its profile with the public and other landscapers not yet involved in LIAWA.

Matthew continued, “It’s been a great project and my hat goes off to our Board members who have driven this. We are already seeing some traction with the public along with those who had never heard of LIAWA before from within the

industry. Through this, our aim is to galvanise our industry, make it far more appealing as a career and assist new landscapers in understanding what it takes to ‘make it’ as a business and importantly why the public should choose a LIAWA member.”

At this year’s LIAWA Awards of Excellence, the hard groundwork Matthew, and his now well-established

board of ten, showed how far they have come in such a very short period of time.

Despite Covid-19 event restrictions, in March, the association was able to honour and acknowledge their members for their outstanding work and contribution to the industry in front of guests, sponsors

and members at the Fremantle Maritime Museum. The highlight of the night was the announcement of the ‘Landscape of The Year’, which was won by Julian Rose from Deep Green Landscaping acknowledging their inspiring work at the Westfield Carousel in Perth.

Thankfully, LIAWA is here to stay and there is no doubt that as it continues to grow and provide value to its members, it will achieve its ultimate goal of government recognition and becoming the true peak body that represents landscapers in Western Australia.

Whether you’re lighting for a specific task or for safety, your light fittings and lighting techniques will vary according to your requirements or desired effect. It is important to know that where some tasks require direct light, others may require a reflected light from surrounding surfaces.

Start by asking yourself how you will be using the space. You may have an alfresco dining, BBQ or services area that requires lighting. Knowing the angle your light needs to be directed and the distance from the object or feature is an important consideration. Understanding the surface your lights will be mounted on and similarly where your lights will be controlled from, will help you understand your requirements and any accessories that may be needed for a stress-free installation.

Lighting can also help guide how you move throughout your space. Knowing the layout of your paths and any changes in levels will help to determine the number of fittings required along with placement of lights to provide a safe environment for family and guests at night.

Take your alfresco dining to after dark

Create a soft atmosphere for your alfresco and dining area by selecting glare free lighting. Also make note of the elevation of your pergola or alfresco area and consider

how your guests will move around so your lights are installed at optimal height.

Define your garden with dramatic results

Now that you’ve identified your key requirements; consider how lighting could enhance features within your space. Lighting boundaries and perimeters can help to create depth and sense of space while low level lighting under benches and steps can create a warm and inviting light in the evening.

Reverse the effects of daylight and create contrasts between light and shadow with these simple techniques. Accent lights emphasise a sculpture or define depth of field for boundary trees. These can also be adjusted as plants mature, highlighting the changing

colours and seasons. A feature tree can be silhouetted by lighting its backdrop at night. In reverse, casting a shadow of a tree onto a surface can create a dramatic effect. A textured wall can be highlighted by ‘grazing’ its surface with the use of Inground lights and Underwater lighting can create a playful effect in moving water. Linear lighting can also help to define a curved bench seat or edging.

Whatever the size or style of your garden, you can achieve spectacular results when you creatively light your space at night. Always speak with a lighting expert if you require assistance and by using quality non-corrosive fittings, you can be confident your garden lighting will provide a lifetime of use and enjoyment for years to come.
