Diesel Dirt & Turf is ready to kick off as I write this, and the staff of LCM are all frantically organising to get out to Eastern Creek so they don’t miss a thing. 2022’s event is likely to be bigger than ever as Australia’s largest construction-industry Expo hits the starter and rocks the landscaping, construction and earthmoving industries.

It’s taken some organising, I can tell you, but thanks to the staff and contributors working at the redline to get this issue done, we’ll be there.

As always, we’ve reviewed some frontline equipment, including mini loaders, power blowers and mowing gear. Andrew Tulloch tested the Ferris Z2 Soft Ride stand-on mower and with a 52-inch cutting deck it’s built to handle some seriously tough terrain.

What have nurseries got to do with landscapers?

Marc Worner makes a case for integrating nursery expertise into landscape planning and general business, and points out that a good relationship with a reputable nursery can have huge benefits for pro landscapers. In this issue Marc has a few tips on choosing the right tree or trees for an installation and throws up a few thoughts on benefits and disadvantages of various types and species.

And while we’re talking about the right foliage, making sure a site is planned to allow foliage to thrive is vital. Getting the right amount of air and water onto, and away from, a location is a big consideration, and it’s not as straightforward as sprinklers and runoff. Jonathan Garner shares his expertise in this field – or backyard, or possibly even courtyard garden – by underlining some

observations on aeration and drainage, and on some of the things which need to be considered to get the balance right. ‘Balance’ is the important concept in getting water and air into and out of soil, because too much air or water, or not enough of either, can spell disaster on an otherwise well-sorted site.

Supplying too much water doesn’t automatically make for a tropical setting, either. Like any job, tropical settings and environments require sound knowledge of the ecosystems and their maintenance, and John Gabriele has clearly laid out a few of

the factors which need to be addressed in that particular application.

It’s all here in another issue of LCM. Plenty of expert advice and industry comment, in-depth testing of relevant equipment, and, of course, a dash of entertainment here and there to give a little break from the constant work.

That’s what we need here at LCM too: a little break from work. Diesel, Dirt & Turf should fit the bill nicely.

Reduce defects to increase profit!

Defects not only hit your bottom line, they hit your reputation as well.

• Direct cost – Fixing a defect is ALWAYS more expensive than doing the job right in the first place, no matter the cause. Cutting corners is not always the cause, poor communication is probably the number one reason for a long defects list.

• Delayed payment – A defects list will stop you being able to make a claim and give the client a reason not to pay, causing major cashflow issues.

• Frustrated staff – Nothing knocks the wind out of a team like a long defects list at the end of a project they all thought

was behind them. Staff can become disillusioned and frustrated, which encourages them to look elsewhere for work. They don’t leave because the physical work is hard, they leave because they are frustrated with the work environment and defects are a good way to destroy company moral.

• Frustrated client – Even the nice clients are fed up at the end of a project. They’ve spent more money than they anticipated, and it’s taken longer than expected. Defects breed defects because a frustrated client goes looking for reasons not to pay that final bill.

• Damaged reputation – Defects can damage your reputation. Your client will

bang on at their barbecue about how you dealt with the defects much longer than they will about the other stella work you did for them. They (rightly) have an expectation that you will do an outstanding job; they’re looking for a reason to believe you haven’t.

So, how do we solve the defect issue?

The solution is Policies and Procedures (P&Ps) – to put systems in place to drive them as close to zero as possible. Here is how you do it:

• Improve communication with staff –Write P&Ps that outline the responsibility of all colleagues and clearly show how information is passed between departments. Create a central and

Defects, even the tiny ones, will eat your profits as quickly as a Labrador devours a plate of unguarded sausages on the barbecue bench. Invest time and money in reducing defects and I promise you’ll notice a positive difference to your bottom line.

organised document storage system and make all staff aware of where they can find the latest and accurate documentation. Ensure there is a good handover to the construction team, that they are up to date on all aspects of the project, so they can build the project with confidence. This also ensures the client can’t steamroll the site staff with incorrect information.

• Improved communication with clients – Always take and distribute meeting notes. Always have variations signed off by the client. Get material samples inspected and signed off by the client. Discuss construction issues and solutions with the client and architect and get the meeting notes signed off by both parties. The aim is to make the client and architect aware of all changes, and obtain their written approval, so that no changes cause defects.

• Identify patterns – Record all defects across all sites on one database, including the cause of those defects, so that you can identify repeat offenders. Write specific P&Ps to address these.

• KPIs – Make ‘defects reduction’ a company wide KPI. Set targets and track your progress towards them. When you focus heavily on defects you will make progress with reducing them.

• Forward planning – Use a project schedule to plan overlapping trades,

to ensure one doesn’t damage the work of another. Also plan to inspect work on a regular basis and when each trade is complete.

• Inspections – Regular inspections, especially when milestones are reached, is a good way to spot potential defects and rectify them before they become so. It is much easier to get a subbie to fix an issue on the spot than it is when they’ve left the job. Most importantly, inspect the project a few weeks before completion with colleagues, the client and architect. Identify the issues and fix them well before D-Day.

• Checklist – Create a checklist of final defects and clearly communicate those to colleagues. Work quickly to get the list completed before the finish day. It is a good idea to have the client agree on the final list and then to sign off on completion of each item on that list. This way the client acknowledges that these final things signal the final completion of the job.

• Software can help – Invest in defect tracking software and use it to get on top of your defects list. Many project management packages include defect tracking software, however there are some good standalone ones on the market.

All of the above tips work best with a Policy & Procedure. The act of writing the P&P

helps you identify and iron out all the issues with the process. You can formally sign responsibility of the P&P to a colleague who now has clear written objectives.

Don’t sit down to write them all at once, that would be too daunting, instead write a Cradle-to-Grave P&P to set out the overview of your business and give you the structure to work with. The next step is to chip away, week by week, until you have them all written. I suggest you start with the big-ticket items, the areas you will see the quickest benefits (for example, communicating with clients, document control). And break it down, be as detailed as possible. Smaller, more specific P&Ps are easier to digest and follow and more successful than long winded, general ones. For example, instead of writing a P&P about “communicating with clients”, write a smaller, more specific one for each type of interaction with the client (for example, Initial contact, Variations, Material approval).

Defects cause headaches for so many reasons. They frustrate clients, colleagues and subbies. They damage your reputation. And most importantly, they cost you money and stuff up your cashflow. The solution is to put systems in place to reduce defects before they happen. It takes work, but not as much work and heartache as fixing stuff-ups all the time! LC

Dreaming of exotic places where palm fringed jungles drip with perfumed tropical flowers and fruits?

Their scent hanging heavy in the warm night air may be closer than you think. A taste of the tropics can be brought closer to home through the landscape, as the world of plants can transport us to exotic locations through our senses. Tropical landscapes emphasise the contrasts between plants, hardscape components and other landscape features. Experimenting with different colours, shapes and textures will bring any tropical landscape concept to life.

Go big and go bold

Tropical landscapes are quite easy to create, even in a temperate climate, and you don’t have to play by the rules to achieve effective results. The key to designing an exciting tropical landscape is through effective plant selection: go big and go bold by selecting plants with large vibrant leaves, bright flowers, and differences in foliage colour, which can be achieved without having to rely totally on tropical plants. Plants with broad or strap like leaves, variegated foliage, coloured foliage, palm-like appearance, and ferns, can all add to the element of a tropical effect. Large foliage plants create optical scale that feels tropical, try plants such as Colocasia, also known as Elephant Ears, Strelitzia nicholi, Bird of Paradise and Ensente ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ the red Abyssinian banana, which has wonderful red tones on the foliage underside and the colour will appear through the green on the upper side of the foliage. The stems are also red

making this one of the most attractive of all the ornamental banana species.

Most indoor plant species originate from sub-tropical regions as understory plants tolerant of low light levels, so they are perfect for the landscape understorey in creating a tropical effect. Codiaeum vareigatum, Ctenanthe ‘Silver Star’, Philodendron ‘Xanadu’, Dracaena and Cordyline cvs. are excellent selections for a tropical landscape.

Tropical gardens also rely on colour to create drama. Bromeliads make the perfect choice as their bold foliage colour can be striking in the understory or mounted in the forsks of trees for dramatic effect. In warmer climates Heliconia make a striking flowering plant. Iresine herbstii commonly called Bloodleaf is another vibrant foliage plant that can break up the hues of green amongst other foliage plant selections, as will Alpinia zerumbet the variegated Shell Ginger, which will grow in most temperate climates. For something a little more unusual Dichorisandra thyrsiflora the Blue Ginger

Cycad

from Brazil is perfect for those shady moist areas amongst ferns and palms.

The key to creating a lush tropical garden is by planting in layers and defining the living and entertaining areas of the landscape. Tall plants mixed with medium-sized shrubs

.and a ground layer of plants will help create the desired effect. In most tropical gardens, palms form the structural element of the garden but other plants are just as suitable such as clumping bamboos or small trees including Frangipani, Qld Umbrella Tree. Bamboos provide an additional sensory experience from the rustle of leaves in the wind and furnish landscapes with a dense green screen that provides a foil for other coloured foliage or flowering plants and provide privacy screening. Even in cooler regions there are palms that can be used to create a tropical effect, Trachycarpus fortunei, the Windmill Palm and Raphis excelsa, the lady finger palm will both tolerate cool conditions.

The lowdown

In creating an understory to the tropical garden, edging plants are perfect for framing the setting providing a defined interface between other components such as hardscape surfaces or lawn areas. Low growing borders of strap leaf plants or clumping perennials, including grasses and sedges can offer a subtle nuance to the tropical charm of the design. Rhoeo spathacea, Zephyranthes candida, Ophiopogon japonica Mondo grass and O. planiscapus ‘Nigresens’ the black Mondo, Liriope cvs. and flowering annuals such as Portulaca, Petunia or Bedding Begonia are ideal selections for tropical borders.

Canopy cover

Establishing canopy cover in a tropical landscape is critical to the success of the understory planting. Canopy not only provides protection to the understory plants, but larger trees also establish the backbone of the design and help anchor all other elements within landscape through their structure and scale. Palms play an integral role in creating a tropical effect and as canopy plants there are selections for all climates, from the tropics and subtropics to the cooler temperate zones. Fast growing Alexandrae palms, Bismarkia nobilis, Wodyetia bifurcate, the foxtail palm are all remarkable species that depending upon local climatic conditions provide an exceptional foliage display. There are of course other species just as worthy and versatile for any tropical landscape.

Nothing speaks tropical more than Frangipani; these botanical beauties offer so much more these days with a palette of delicious colours bound to quench the thirst of any gardener seeking a taste of the tropics. Frangipanis are now available in a variety of colour forms. The ubiquitous white and yellow flowers of Frangipani acutifolia are now competing with stunning varieties in solitary colours, and bicolour combinations

in pinks, orange, lilacs and reds with pastel shades included, all dripping with an exquisite fragrance. These deciduous trees will grow to around 8m but there are also smaller dwarf and semi-dwarf varieties available. At home in containers or in the ground, Frangipani are an ideal selection for tropical, sub-tropical and temperate climates to create a tropical effect. Grown in containers they can become top heavy; select a broad container to prevent plants from blowing over in windy conditions.

Social climbers

Climbing plants also play an integral role in tropical landscapes. Their capacity to cover vertical surfaces and other features that require screening make them an integral part of plant selection. Stephanotis floribunda, Alamanda, Mandavilla, can provide a softer element to many hardscape features and Bougainvillea cvs. the most flamboyant of climbing plants can be a true focal point in tropical design. The smash

of colour screams subtropical garden. Its thorns allow it to clamber over fences, walls and pergolas, but it can also be trained as a shrub or ground cover. The dwarf ‘bambino’ varieties are also perfect for pots and smaller gardens.

Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as star jasmine, is a beautiful climber worth growing for its few short weeks of profuse flowering. Its seductive scent is intoxicating, and this plant will also flourish in shade conditions.

Tropical features

Installation of a water feature in a tropical landscape gives it authenticity. Water features are also a good way to maintain humidity around tropical plants and provide a water source or habitat for a range of fauna. Garden lighting can be used to dramatic effect to accent the shadows of large foliage plants and strategically placed garden art, such as large Balinese carvings and ornamental containers, which

can solidify a tropical landscape theme together exquisitely.

It is however the plants selected within a tropical landscape that bring the design to life. To provide a definitive list of plants suitable for tropical landscapes is a near impossible task. Those listed in this article are but a few that can be relied upon to provide the desired effect across a range of conditions. Each site will have its limitations in terms of macro and microclimate characteristics and other biotic that will influence plant selection and overall performance. One thing is certain and that is tropical landscapes are filled with colour, contrast, texture, and drama. LC

Aeration and drainage

How we manage to maintain the right quantity of water in the soil and how we manage to remove the wrong quantity or excess water from the site is the difference between success and failure in our quest to achieve the designed intent.

When we get it right the first time then nobody notices. When it’s done wrong then everybody notices.

A large part of my job is problem solving, the most common problem I’m engaged to solve is water problems. Too much of it to be precise.

Once again, when we get the soil right for the specified plants then the landscape asset performs. Sure, aspect and climate play roles but generally speaking and for the purpose of this article, let’s get the soil right for the plant’s roots.

Putting chemistry aside, most general lines plants have similar physical needs from the soil: air, water and structure. The latter dictates how easily roots have access to air and water.

Roots are just like us. We both need oxygen to make new cells, repair old ones, to take up nutrients and to absorb water. Like all gases, oxygen moves through the atmosphere by means of diffusion. High concentrations

of a gas move towards low concentrations. Well drained or porous conditions allows oxygen and other gasses to diffuse freely through the soil. As oxygen depletes from plant and soil organism consumption, more needs to move in to maintain a state of balance or equilibrium. Keep in mind that both air and water like to occupy and move through the same pore spaces within the soil. If there’s too much water in these spaces then we are waterlogged. Conversely, when there’s too much air in these spaces, we can have drought conditions. How we maintain or create this important balance of moisture and air requires us to factor or adjust our behaviours towards the soil.

The most common causes of poor aeration is from waterlogging and soil compaction. The former may see plant roots suffocate from experiencing periods of inundation from poorly drained conditions where the latter will inhibit or completely cease rootgrowth. Soil capping and layering are other factors that can suffocate the soil profile. This can be from something obvious like installing an impervious layer over the soil such as a concrete slab or raising soil levels beneath trees, down to the dressing of incompatible soil textures or spreading a

finely graded mulch or compost layer over a silty or clay soil.

Changes take place within minutes of roots being cut off from precious oxygen.

Uptake of important nutrients such as calcium, phosphorous and potassium almost ceases, and the water movement into roots is reduced to near zero. The roots develop toxins such as alcohol and ethylene, while vital hormone production is retarded.

The movement of oxygen through waterlogged soil is very slow indeed, around 10,000 times slower than atmospheric movement in fact. After a few hours or days, the effects of no oxygen from waterlogging becomes easy to see. Wilting in the middle of the day, dying roots, calcium deficiencies and yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) are a few of the many reactions.

After a short period, the effects of waterlogging to the soil soon occur. Anaerobic or anoxic soil conditions produce organic toxins such as ethylene, methane and organic acids. The build-up of rotten egg gas (hydrogen sulphide) will affect the plants and microorganisms within the soil profile. Some vital elements such as iron and manganese can dissolve from minerals to reach toxic levels.

Detecting poor aeration and waterlogging

Obviously pooling and puddling of water is one clue. A soddened soil sample taken more than two days after rain or irrigation will also indicate waterlogging. Often the problem can be deeper than the soil surface. In these cases, dig some holes and use your nose to detect poor aeration from saturated soil. A musty, dank smell with the unsavoury aroma of rotten eggs will quickly tell you that oxygen is needed.

Maintaining oxygen for trees within the built environment

Eighty-five per cent or more of a tree’s roots are in the upper 300mm of soil where oxygen levels are highest.

Based on the frequency that we see soil levels being increased beneath trees, it would seem evident that many people are not aware of how shallow tree root systems are and how important gaseous exchange is to these slow growing creatures. Applying layers of fill over an established mature root

system greatly hinders the ability of oxygen to diffuse into the soil. As the roots use up the available oxygen and when it is not replenished, the roots gradually suffocate and die. As these die, they cease absorbing the water the tree needs, thus the tree gradually declines or dies from thirst.

This can occur slowly over years, quickly over a few months, or a tree could languish in a slow state of decline indefinitely. Trees take a long time to grow, so often they take a long time to die. While trees vary in their tolerance of altered soil levels, the amount considered safe to apply is less than 100mm annually. When you are presented with the request or need to increase soil levels beneath a tree, to pave over or within its root zone, always ensure that you’re maintaining the opportunity for gaseous exchange within the root system. Let’s cover root protection methods in further detail later in the year.

As I mentioned earlier, getting excess water off site is just as important as keeping the right amounts on site. Effective drainage is one of the most important factors behind

a healthy landscape asset. Consideration needs to be given towards where this water comes from, where it accumulates and how to either take advantage of it or effectively remove it.

Naturally, during rain events, all hard surfaces catch and concentrate large amounts of water. Effective stormwater design generally sees this water collected and transferred within a drainage network. Although often, the garden or lawn beside hard surfaces is expected to absorb or disperse concentrated amounts of surface water. How the garden copes with this burden often depends on how we’ve prepared the soil within the area for rain events. A well-structured soil will greatly improve infiltration rates, which in turn will serve to maintain a higher degree of porosity and air within the root zone

Although most of us know the process and installation of ag lines, often is the case that they aren’t installed or backfilled correctly to effectively intercept surface and sub surface water. Ag or French drains are

often finished with a final layer of soil rather than gravel or drainage sand continuing all the way to the surface. Keep in mind that water can only enter a coarse layer of soil from a finer textured soil if it is given a ‘push’. It won’t naturally percolate into the coarse layer. The push is usually the weight of extra water arriving from above or beside the coarse layer. Only when there is a small ‘head’ of water pressure above the porous layer will water flow into it. We’ll cover this situation in detail when we discuss layered or inverted soil horizons later in the year. In the meantime, the best thing I suggest to you is to remove the layer of soil from above your ag lines and replace it with more aggregate or coarse mulch. Your surface water will then easily percolate into the drainage system rather than waiting to be pushed into the drainage network.

Another thing to consider when building impermeable layers such as paths or kerbs within the landscape is to give water somewhere to escape to. Installing drainpipes at the lowest points of paving or kerbing will enable water to move more freely downhill. A small amount of fore thought will greatly improve the finished product and assist you in the quest to achieve the design intent. LC

Nursery trees

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a nursery as: “An area where plants are grown for transplanting, for use as stocks for budding and grafting, or for sale.” These days nurseries have become a destination in which to read and relax, enjoy the company of friends over a meal or coffee whilst children play in purpose-built playgrounds; others stroll through designer gardens to the sounds of cascading waterfalls and purchase the latest varieties of plants on the market.

Landscapers use nurseries in a different way. They stroll through looking for inspiration for their next project or a plant that’s just that little different to use for a hedge that a customer wants, or a feature tree to anchor the garden. Landscapers also want value for money and good quality stock to help maintain their profit margin. Over time, they develop a trusting working relationship with the staff and management and get free expert advice from time to time to assist in their purchases. The best nurseries deliver and feature an online CRN system, which allows online management of purchases and accounts. A good working relationship with a nursery is critical to any landscaper’s business.

Trees are the skeleton on which the whole garden hangs. Trees determine the degree of shade and therefore what other plants can be grown. Trees affect the views, the “borrowed landscape”, the light inside the house and its energy efficiency. They may affect the integrity of the house foundations and plumbing if the root system is aggressive. They may drop litter and stir up allergies.

Deciduous trees can be extraordinarily beautiful because they offer a range of pleasures in different seasons.

Evergreen trees may play a screening role, be good for kids to climb, attract birds and other wildlife, be fire retardant and provide shelter from prevailing winds.

It is impossible to provide a best choice tree list for all climates around Australia. Instead, you might like to consider the following factors when deciding on which trees to incorporate in your garden design for your clients.

Site

Most importantly choose a tree that suits its location – appropriate aspect, light, climate, humidity, soil type, pH and drainage.

TIP: Avoid planting weeping willows, evergreen alders, rubber and umbrella trees close to buildings or above pipes and drains.

Beauty

Try to choose a tree that offers more than just one desirable feature. Consider leaf colour in the different seasons and leaf shape in proportion to the tree’s surrounds. Smaller leaf size makes less of a visual impact in a big open space whereas big, leafed trees tend to dominate small spaces.

Growing habit is an important consideration. The colour, size and time of appearance of the flowers should be taken into account. Does the tree offer edible or ornamental fruit? Will any seed pods become a nuisance?

The colour and texture of bark is an important consideration with trees because the canopy is generally above us whilst the trunk is in our line of sight. For instance, the deciduous Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) has a distinctive pattern to its smooth trunk and is often used to sit under. The aroma of leaves and/or flowers and the sound of the wind in the leaves can recall all sorts of images.

TIP: Avoid installing wind chimes for your client. A great addition in the beginning but I guarantee you that they will become a garage sale item in due course.

Shade

If your client needs summer shade but winter sun, then a deciduous tree is the best choice. In southern Australia, planting deciduous trees on the northern and eastern sides of your site makes the house warmer and lighter in winter and cooler in the summer. Plant evergreen trees on the western side (where the sun sets) and wherever you need a permanent screen.

The degree of shade will determine the type of plants that will grow underneath the canopy. Lawn for instance, will not grow in deep shade but a mulched area with shade-loving plants such as bromeliads, cliveas, camellias, ferns and rainforest plants should do well.

TIP: Avoid planting the deciduous spreading tree known as the Honey Locust tree (Gleditsia triacanthos. Avoid planting the erect, columnar tree, which is also a noxious weed the White Poplar (Populus alba).

Screening

If the main purpose of the tree is as a screen then deciduous trees are not very suitable. A lightly foliaged evergreen may be a better choice. Confusing the view is often as effective as completely blocking it. Consider small Eucalypts, Wattles, Banksias and Pittosporums.

A lightly foliaged tree also works better as a wind filter than a densely foliaged one,

which may cause severe wind turbulence. Trees with a light canopy include Jacaranda, Silver Birch, Virgilia, Crepe Myrtle and Eucalypts.

TIP: Trees that exude chemicals to destroy competing plants around them include casuarinas and pine trees.

Allergies

There are some trees that seem to affect a large number of people adversely. These include Rhus, Olive and Plane trees and also the Norfolk Island Hibiscus (Lagunaria patersonia).

Litter

Trees are living things and will always drop leaves, twigs, flowers, etc. Sometimes the litter is part of the tree’s charm – for example the carpet of purple under the flowering Jacaranda nearing Christmas time, the colourful bright reds and orange autumn leaves of the Japanese maple and the scented leaves and bark below Eucalypts.

NB: Deciduous trees drop their leaves all at once whilst evergreen trees drop litter constantly but in small quantities.

Consider Tibouchina “Alstonville” for stunning purple flowers covering the tree in autumn when very little else is flowering anywhere.

Wildlife

Eucalypts are the most important trees for attracting our native birds to a garden. Honeyeaters and native mammals are attracted by both native and exotic flowering trees, parrots and cockatoos will enjoy nuts, seed pods (such as those of Banksia integrifolia) and cones. Corymbia “Summer Red” is but one of a few dwarf, grafted, Eucalyptus trees, which are ideal for a small block and have an outstanding flower display in red, pink, orange and magenta in summer and spot flower the rest of the year.

Fire

Eucalypts and many conifers are highly inflammable because of the volatile oils they contain. Trees that do not burn readily include Angophora costata and the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum).

Remember to deliver trees to the jobsite only when you are ready to plant. I have seen numerous landscape sites where plants have been stolen, suffered and/or died because they needed to be “put aside for a few days”. This mistake will also eat away at your bottom-line profit. LC

Blundstone Australia on the key elements of

safety footwear.

The choice of safety footwear has implications far exceeding the fundamentally important – and obvious ones – of accident prevention and protection. There is increasing awareness that wearing inappropriate or inadequate footwear can lead to long-term occupational health issues, including physical problems such as knee and back strains and can also be detrimental to a wearer’s mental health.

Footwear has a strong bearing on a wearer’s comfort and wellbeing –possibly more than any other item of apparel. When a worker is on their feet for 8-10 hours a day – often on challenging, slippery, wet and muddy or uneven surfaces – they need to feel confident that their boots are up to the task both from a protective point of view and offering the correct support skeletally as well as underfoot comfort.

Workplace environments and risk factors vary enormously, and work health and safety risk assessments should be consulted before choosing footwear protection. Adrian Blandford, Blundstone’s

Global Work and Safety Range Manager sets out some key considerations in the selection of safety footwear.

AS 2210.3:2019 tested

AS 2210.3:2019 is the relevant standard when it comes to safety footwear, with the objective of this standard being to provide manufacturers and users with requirements for footwear intended for use in workplace applications. This standard specifically relates to the safety footwear element of personal protective equipment and ensures that the footwear is compliant in providing the wearer with the best level of safety for every facet including

30 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > On the cover

design, upper construction (including leather properties), linings, durability and slip resistance of outsole materials, insoles, toe protection and specific ergonomic features.

Toe cap resistance

Safety footwear is often fitted with toe caps, which are designed to give protection against impact when tested at an energy level of at least 200 joules and against compression when tested at a compression load of at least 15kN. Steel toe caps provide the maximum protection against impact, cuts, penetration and rolling forces such as forklifts and heavy moving machinery. Although steel toe caps are the traditional means of protection in safety footwear, advances in composite toe material have been significant in the last few years. Footwear manufacturers are now able to provide safety alternatives that are not only suitable for light industries such as hospitality, warehousing, and security but also suitable for more robust industries and work environments. That said, for workers whose feet are exposed to the risk of repetitive impacts, penetration or cutting hazards, steel safety toe boots remain as the most suitable option.

Ergonomic features

Another common lower body injury is rolled ankles, which is a prevalent hazard on work sites across Australia. You can help mitigate these risks through the selection of boots that feature wide, flared soles, correct arch support, shanks to ensure torsional stability, quality footbeds and strong and

supportive heel counters that assist in decreasing the risk of ankle injury.

Blundstone offer a large range of safety footwear to meet the demands of harsh work environments with new release styles #984 and #243 Crew Boot being particularly suited to landscaping environments.

#243 Features include:

• Wheat nubuck, water-resistant upper in a new low-cut design

When purchasing safety footwear, it’s important to ensure that the specific needs of your industry are met by your boots. Your health and safety is paramount –you should consider your boots to be the most valuable tool in your toolbox. With so many options on the market, it’s important to remember that not all safety boots are the same. Make sure your choice is fit for purpose and the best option available for you.

Takeuchi TL8R2 is a winner for hire company

Originally a contracting company, iHIRE2U has transitioned over the years to become an equipment hire operation that hires a comprehensive range of equipment to local landholders and businesses involved in construction, landscape work, plumbing and other trades.

Owner Mat Jones said, “Many tradies and property owners in the rural fringes of Sydney have a small tractor, but when a job emerges that needs a skid steer, compact loader, excavator or specialised attachments, we are often their first choice for backup equipment. We also provide these machines for contractors whose own machines may be out of action for service or have maintenance issues.

“Often, tradies may have a small machine but when they get a job that requires different equipment, we are well equipped to satisfy their needs. A plumber may have a 3 or 5 tonne excavator in their fleet, but there are times when they need a larger excavator or track loader.

“The Takeuchi TL8R2 compact track loader is our second machine, having experienced great performance from our first Takeuchi TL8, which we bought in 2016. These loaders are virtually bullet-proof, which is a much-needed feature when you are in the hire business. They have delivered the outstanding reliability and low maintenance costs that are critical to keep your bottom line on track.

“Purchase price of equipment is secondary because it is the long-term reliability, maintenance and whole of life costs that we consider. In this business,

you can’t afford to have anything breaking down during a hire. Happy customers make a major contribution to our business growth, which has come from always providing equipment and machines that will keep operating and don’t cost them any downtime.

“Both our Takeuchi track loaders are constantly in use by many different people who possess varying degrees of skill in operating these machines across many different applications. This is a tough environment, with the loaders often being taken to the limit of their performance, but never letting us down!

“When we were looking for a new track loader, we spent a lot of time checking with our mechanic about what type of machine would be best for our purpose. We looked at potential repair costs and how the different machines were manufactured. Our previous experience with Takeuchi

excavators had also given us a high level of confidence in the brand’s design, construction and engineering,” Mat added.

New Cat® 304 and 305 CR Mini Hydraulic Excavators deliver more power and performance with lower operating costs

The much-anticipated arrival of the new 4-tonne, Cat® 304, and 5-tonne, Cat 305 CR, Next Generation Mini Hydraulic Excavators are arriving to Australian shores. This completes Caterpillar’s Next Generation line-up of their mini-excavators, now offering 15 separate models starting from the Cat 301.5 at 1.7-tonnes up to the Cat 310 at 10-tonnes.

The new Cat 304 and 305 CR delivers more power to the pumps, higher bucket breakout forces and deeper standard digging depths to increase performance by up to 20% over their previous E2 series models. Their industry-leading grease intervals and extended filter service life, combined with common components throughout the line-up together with flat, easy-to-replace side panels that promise to deliver up to 10% lower owner and operating costs.

The new 304 and 305 CR models are the final machines to be released with a complete new design from the ground up to the Cat next generation mini hydraulic excavator line concept. From the 1.5- to 10tonne class models, all 15 Cat mini hydraulic excavators in the range offer common features and consistent control layouts to simplify training and operator adaptation.

New 304 increases stability Built with a new reduced radius design, the 304 features a 1700mm track width, 254mm slimmer than the 304 E2, for more versatility and access to confined spaces. While narrower, the new 304 design also increases performance, balance and stability of the 4-tonne class model. Caterpillar have achieved this by moving from a compact to reduced radius counterweight that allows

for greater stability, both in 360-degree operation and when travelling with loads, while its extra counterweight option takes the model to an even higher level of stability.

Compact performance

of the 305 CR

The new engine on the 5-tonne class Cat 305 CR Excavator delivers nearly 9% greater power to increase machine performance.

Hydraulic system improvements provide higher breakout forces – 49.2 kN, bucket, 28.3 kN with standard stick and 25.2 kN with long stick – to improve digging efficiency in hard rock applications. It also offers 140mm deeper dig depths than the 305 E2, giving it more application flexibility. Its compact radius swing reduces overhang when working to the side, while its 1980mm (78-in) track width and

new extra counterweight option help to optimise stability and lift performance in confined spaces.

Advanced efficiency

Both excavator models now offer an angle dozer blade option to optimise machine flexibility in backfilling and finish grading applications. In addition to offering ample above- and below-grade travel with standard float function for easy clean-up, the angle blade moves 45 degrees left or right of centre. Increasing efficiencies and reducing operator interaction with final grading, angle blade movement is controlled by the right-hand joystick, while the left joystick handles machine drive.

Tailoring machine weight to job requirements, interchangeable counterweight packages offer the balance between low ground pressure and lifting performance. Their industry-exclusive Cat Stick Steer System simplifies machine control by allowing the operator to switch from conventional lever/foot-pedal steering controls to low-effort joystick operation. Two travel speed ranges and standard cruise control facilitate moving around the jobsite with minimum operator interaction.

Meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emission standards, the turbocharged Cat C1.7 Turbo engine delivers higher power than the previous C2.4 engine. Standard auto idle, auto engine shutdown and efficient load-sensing hydraulics with variable displacement

pump help to lower fuel usage at the site for more affordable operation. High mainrelief pressures, coupled with flow rates, generates the hydraulic capacity for high digging and lifting forces and more efficient use of a range of attachments. Complete with quick-disconnect lines, the standard auxiliary system provides the choice of one-way, two-way or continuous flow.

Next generation comfort, savings

Common to all cab version Cat next generation mini hydraulic excavators, the sealed and pressurised cab enclosure is available with heating and air conditioning for all-weather climate control. The cab’s large glass areas plus skylight afford allaround visibility. The large display with advanced touchscreen option provides

intuitive machine function control and easy monitoring of critical operating parameters. A canopy option is available in some regions. Daily maintenance checks for the 304 and 305 CR are quickly made from ground level through side doors. Expanded use of common parts throughout the line plus their damage-resistant exterior construction help to reduce parts inventory investment and lower repair costs. Increased service intervals mean these excavators spend more time on the job and less time in the shop.

CEA Ring-O-Matic introduces new 275 VX Trailer Mounted Vacuum Excavator

Known for their extensive background in trailer mounted vacuum excavators, Ring-O-Matic has now extended their range to include the new 275 VX, offering a high-powered vacuum excavator within a compact and practical design. This new machine provides a 250-gallon (946L) spoil tank, and 600CFM blower, powered by a 31hp Deutz diesel engine.

The 275 VX is the perfect machine for many applications including hydro excavation, locating underground utilities, waste clean-up, municipality use, concrete slurry management, dairy farm clean up, fence post setting, micro-tunnelling, storm drain cleaning, treatment plant cleaning, utility pole setting, and many other tasks.

“The 275 VX is ideal for the Australian market,” said CEA Underground Product Manager, Scott O’Hare. “Given its compact design, its suitable for a large range of applications across commercial and residential spaces, and while its more compact, the 275 VX doesn’t compromise on power making it the perfect choice for those considering the purchase of a trailer mounted vacuum excavator.”

Suitable for truck or trailer mount configurations the 275 VX showcases the diversity of the Ring-O-Matic Vacuum Excavator line up. The machines will be available through CEA on 4.5T ATM trailers, or single skid mount for truck mounting.

Powered by a Deutz 31hp engine, the 275 VX offers unmatched performance and reliability, while the heavy-duty frame, large axle capacity and the Roots 600CFM vacuum pump blowers ensure the 275VX is designed to withstand the most rugged conditions.

The compact low profile of the 275 VX provides good visibility for the operator, and stability in rough locations. Fitted with a premium silencer package the 275 VX delivers minimal noise, ideal for applications in densely populated areas.

The 275 VX’s balanced design provides optimum tongue weight reducing wear on the operator’s truck. The machine comes standard with reverse flow providing fast tank emptying, and the ability to blow obstructions out of the vacuum hose and backflush the filters for quick-easy cleaning. The 275 VX is also fitted with a unique single handle door latch design for easier, faster opening and closing.

Key features of the 275 VX include:

• Controls and remotes – The controls located on the front curb side provide easy access with a lockable cabinet and magnetic remote that can extend if operating from a distance is required.

• Water tank – The single water tank is capable of holding 100 gallons (378 litres). The tank also includes a low water shutoff feature. A single water tank provides better reliability, and less maintenance for operators.

• Reverse flow – The 275 VX offers reverse flow standard, which allows you to pressurise the tank for easy offloading, and assists in clearing hose obstructions.

• Rear door – The spoil tank door is mechanically locked with a single lever Spider door locking system, and hydraulically opened. The hydraulic door opens 75 degrees, which provides the industry’s widest opening rear door in its class, ensuring better access for easier cleaning.

• Baghouse filtration – The baghouse filtration that follows the Cyclo-Separator filtration has a washable and reusable filter that is accessed easily to be blown out and cleaned after use.

The first 275 VX trailer mounted vacuum excavators recently arrived in Australia.

Toyota Huski carving through timber business’ workload

A timber-cutting business has carved through its workload since purchasing its first

Toyota Huski skid steer loader, using it to move 30 tonnes of timber in a single day.

Fox in the Woods, located in Tamworth, New South Wales, recently purchased a Toyota 5SDK9 skid steer loader, after much research and preparation.

Fox in the Woods is a family run business that gathers timber and repurposes it in various forms, as owner, Justin Fox, explained. Justin and his partner run the business and focus on creating handmade timber products.

“We use a lot of recycled timber and hardwood timber from farms. We mill all our own timber to suit, whether it is dimensional timber for building or right down to kitchen chopping boards and platters,” explained Mr Fox.

“The Huski skid steer comes in as our heavy-lifter. We might go out to a farm and grab some felled trees, or a farmer might have a stack of wood in preparation for

a bonfire and I will just go through it and pull the good bits out of it. They would only have to burn it otherwise, so it’s real recyclability.”

Mr Fox continues, “An arborist might contact us and explain they have got wood and offer it to me. They can drop it to my yard, or I’ll go and pick it up with the Huski and load it onto my truck. Conversely, I sometimes work alongside the tree-cutting companies and take my Huski along to help them with their jobs.”

Mr Fox far from rushed into his purchase decision, first meeting Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Newcastle area Sales Manager, Allan Peacock, many years ago. “I met Justin at the AgQuip Field Days in Gunnedah, in 2017, when he came to have a look at our Toyota Huskis,” said Mr Peacock.

Mr Fox mentioned he was considering a skid steer loader. “I told Allan three years ago, or so, that I would be purchasing a skid steer loader,” said Mr Fox. “He must have known I was genuine because he persevered even though I was looking at a lot of different brands of skid steer loaders.”

“Allan would call me up to see how I was going with the process and he always followed through with what he said. He knew exactly what it was all about and I ended up getting some quotes.”

Mr Fox’s purchasing diligence extended to hiring Huskis from local companies. “One of the biggest things that got me over the line with the Huski was that all our local hire places stock them. I had to ask myself why and the answer is because they are durable machines that are less likely to break down, because of their mechanical simplicity.”

44 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Client Testimonial

“I’m a plant mechanic by trade so I understand how they are built. I knew that because it’s a ‘basic’ machine it was never going to let me down on site because of a computer or controller.”

“It also helps that there is the Huski service centre in Tamworth just in case I need them. They also come out to do the servicing as part of the warranty.”

Mr Fox’s research led him to favour the Toyota Huski range’s largest skid steer loader: the 5SDK11, however TMHA’s Mr Peacock advised Mr Fox that the 5SDK9 would better suit his requirements. “Initially I was planning to buy the big Huski, the 5SDK11, but Allan talked me through the range and recommended the smaller 5SDK9 because the engine horsepower was more than ample, it had the stability I needed for rough terrain and it also had the best radial lift versus vertical lift,” said Mr Fox.

“I’ve also started moving into earthworks, so I’ll probably buy an 5SDK11 to specialise in that, down the track.”

In the consultation process TMHA’s Mr Peacock considered Mr Fox’s many

duties and suggested several attachments including a Digga 4 in 1 general purpose bucket, Digga 300mm and 450mm Auger Drives with Tungsten Tips, a Norm Reversible Stick Rake and a HIMAC Pallet Fork with Grapple attachment.

Mr Fox’s favoured attachment is the grapple that allows him to lift and hold large timber logs whilst traversing uneven ground, without losing control of the load.

“That grapple attachment is unbelievable; it’s worth its weight in gold. You can grab and pull with it, crush things, pick things up, run them around and throw them on my truck. I’ve had jobs removing old tanks and I just drive it straight into the sides of them,” explained Mr Fox.

“It does a phenomenal job, carrying around three-tonne logs all day. On my first day with the Huski I moved 30 tonnes of logs a good distance to my truck, which was amazing.”

Such productivity has made Mr Fox’s investment a worthy one. He said, “It has been a big investment for our business but it’s already paying for itself because

of our massively increased efficiency and production. It’s paying for itself in hire fees, alone.”

Things have come a long way for Mr Fox, who started out with just a chainsaw and a trailer. Having this multi-purpose machine that can grab everything he needs has made such a huge difference to his business.

Asked about his favourite Huski feature, Mr Fox said “It’s the controls. The forward and reverse controls are red-hot. I like how you’re just sitting in it and it’s happy days. It’s so natural to drive.”

So impressed with his herculean workhorse was Mr Fox that he felt compelled to call TMHA’s Mr Peacock to give his feedback.

“I rang him once at seven in the morning and said I needed to talk to him about the Huski. He was a little bit worried because I said I had a problem with the machine. He asked what was it? And I said it’s too good!”

Ferris® (SRS™) Z2 Soft Ride Stand-On Mower

In true Ferris style this new generation stand-on is built tough and not short on power. It is fitted with an 810cc fuelinjected commercial Vanguard™ engine producing 28hp*. The engine is also fitted with Vanguard’s own Oil Guard™ System, which features an external oil reservoir with an oil cooler and easily removable cyclonic oil filter in the neck of the tank. It holds 4.7 litres of oil, which is way more than conventional sumps. This combination keeps the oil in better condition for longer and greatly increases the intervals between services. Five-hundred hours is the recommended oil change interval, although Briggs & Stratton does recommend 250-hour intervals for our harsh Australian conditions. Being a dry sump system, the lubrication is far superior on slopes to a conventional wet sump so it is a huge cost saving on maintenance compared to conventional engine oil sump setups.

48 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH
I had the pleasure of giving the new Ferris SRS Z2 stand-on zero turn a workout recently and as expected it did not disappoint, even in the sodden wet conditions we experienced on filming day.

Driving the SRS Z2 are integrated HydroGear® ZT-3800® transmissions, also fitted with oil coolers. These transmissions are proven, both for longevity and quality, and provided smooth and responsive drive through the controls, ensuring easy manoeuvrability for the operator at all speeds.

The 52-inch cutting deck is Ferris’s fabricated iCD model, which is also featured

on its seated zero-turns. It is constructed of 10-guage steel. Double layered in high stress areas, double reinforced side skirts and overlap welded corners, ensuring it’s robust under contractor punishment.

The easy-access spindles are greaseable and the outer spindle covers are open ended reducing the amount of debris build-up around the pulleys. A neat, even cut was achieved on thick buffalo grass

and the cut grass expelled well in extremely wet conditions.

A three-stage adjustable speed control can be set easily without tools from the operator’s position. The front handheld bar moves and locks into place limiting the forward movement of the control arms, which enables the operator to push the control arms against the handheld bar for a secure grip at desired speed.

WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU 49
50 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive SPECIFICATIONS Engine Vanguard™ 810 EFI with Oil Guard Output 28hp* Fuel capacity 30 litres Ground speed 16km/h forward and 8km/h reverse Cutting width 52 inch Cutting heights 1.75 - 5” in 1/4” increments

Operator comfort is a very important factor – and as we would expect the leader in suspension zero turns not only has a suspension operator’s platform, but it is also adjustable and quick, with the removal and reinstatement of a pin in the desired position. This allows the operator to set the suspension to their liking and/or the terrain.

Another great feature of the Ferris operator’s platform is an automatic blade shutoff when the operator leaves the platform. This is great when you need to jump off to quickly move an obstacle as the engine stays running, resulting in less engine restarts. Just switch the blades back on and keep mowing.

The thigh pad is comfortable with side bolsters enabling the operator to nestle into a secure, comfortable stance.

The height adjustment is located to the left of the operator – it is a simple drop-in pin system with hand lift and automatic travel position lock in. It is easy to see the desired heights from the operator’s position and the lowering action is smooth.

A fair amount of effort is needed for raising the deck purely because it is a large 52-inch heavy-duty deck.

Handy tie-down points are built into the machine for secure transportation and the front castor wheels are flat free, reducing downtime possibilities.

Overall, the new Ferris (SRS™) Z2 Soft Ride Stand-On Mower is a compact stander for a large cut. It is very comfortable to operate, responsive, manoeuvrable and performed well even in challenging wet conditions. Ferris’s warranty will also not disappoint – the engine is covered by a 3-year commercial warranty with the transmissions and balance of the machine covered commercially for 2 years.

Blow leaves to oblivion with these AEG jets

As a landscaper or professional gardener, you’ll know better than most what autumn means – a never-ending supply of fallen leaves to clean up. That’s where AEG’s range of 18V and 58V jet-powered leaf blowers will not only make your job easier, it’ll make it so much quicker, too.

The AEG 58V Jet Blower’s (ABL58JB) powerful brushless motor and axial fan are designed to clear large amounts of debris by delivering a massive 544CFM air volume at a speed of 230km/h. The streamlined body and rear battery placement provides a well-balanced experience, which you’ll appreciate on longer jobs.

The variable speed trigger provides greater directional control and the lock-on cruise control button reduces fatigue. Hit the turbo button for that extra boost of power when you need to clear larger piles of debris.

For even bigger leaf-clearing jobs, the 58V Brushless Backpack Blower (ABL58BP) sends leaves and debris into orbit with a market-leading 700CFM of air volume at 260km/h. Even with all this power, because it’s battery powered it still has low noise levels – great for early-morning starts and late-evening jobs.

The dual battery ports allow it to be used with one or two batteries, giving you the option of extended runtime for those bigger jobs. Cruise control lets you lock on the power at the level you require. The turboboost trigger gives you more power when it’s needed, and it’s set on a 30-second timer that stops when the trigger is released or the time expires (to preserve battery power).

Being this powerful, it’s ideal for clearing leaves and debris from wide-open areas like car parks, roads, business parks, retirement villages, schools, hospitals and more.

But if you don’t need the additional power of the 58V range of outdoor power equipment and you’re already on the 18V power tool platform, the 18V FUSION Jet Blower (ABL18F) still packs plenty of punch – an impressive 465CFM at 200km/h.

It has all the features of a top-of-the-range model, like cruise control and turbo boost, with an added feature of a steel scraper ring on the front of the tube, designed for removing wet and stubborn debris from hard surfaces.

The AEG 18V FUSION Jet Blower is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre at only 2.1kg. Its heavy-duty brushless motor delivers increased performance, durability and longer runtimes compared to traditional brushed motors.

These jet blowers are part of AEG’s extensive range of outdoor power equipment. Check them out at AEGpowertools.com.au

Available at Bunnings, Adelaide Tools, Tool Kit Depot or delivered direct to your site via the AEG Onsite team. Call Matt on 0438 110 636 and he’ll get them delivered to your site.

Shindaiwa® blowers setting the standard

The Shindaiwa brand has long been known for Japanese quality, bulletproof reliability and performance that’s the envy of the industry.

Never content to rest on their reputation, Shindaiwa has released an all-new range of its lightweight, high performing leaf blowers with new, innovative features to enhance user comfort and productivity.

The range topping EB810 is the most powerful leaf blower in the world, with a massive 1070 CFM and 44.4 Newtons of blow force. A strong, lightweight frame and impeller housing make the EB810 the choice for the biggest professional jobs where the extra power will save time and effort.

For user comfort, the EB810 has a ventilated back pad, which draws cool air in over the operator’s back (this can be turned off in cold conditions), as well as padded, odour-resistant shoulder straps and an included hip belt that can be fitted by the user for increased support. The throttle control for the 79.9cc 2-stroke

engine is mounted on the outlet tube, is fully adjustable, and features a soft grip and cruise control function. Five spring antivibration technology effectively isolates the user for comfortable all-day use.

For enhanced longevity a number of features have been built in to the EB810, including a heavy-duty air cleaner with pre filter, metal wear ring on the blower tube and a chrome-plated engine cylinder bore. Maintenance is made easy with no tools required to inspect and replace the air cleaner element. The blower tube can be easily clipped to the backpack harness for transport as well, making transport between jobs a breeze.

The new Shindaiwa EB262 hand-held blower has been designed from the ground up for commercial users. A 25.4cc 2-stroke, Japanese-made engine with chrome-plated cylinder bore powers this unit, delivering 15.8 Newtons of blowing force through the round blower pipe with metal wear ring. A flat pipe is also included.

For high frequency use, the EB262 is fitted with the same heavy-duty pleated air cleaner with pre cleaner that is included on Shindaiwa’s 25.4 cc professional trimmers, and low vibration is achieved with the use of clever design and active vibration reduction built into the top handle and convenient side handle. This gives the benefit of anti-

vibration, without the added weight and bulk of a conventional spring-mounted system.

As with all Shindaiwa petrol products, the EB810 and EB262 professional blowers are covered by a 5-year domestic use and 2-year commercial use warranty.

Wright Stander ZK

COX partnered with Wright Manufacturing in 2020 introducing the smaller deck Stand ons into Australia and have enjoyed great success in the commercial space.

With the Stander B range most popular with contractors who need to access backyards and tight enclosed areas, it is time to introduce a new selection of larger units. This range is called the Stander ZK with deck sizes from 52”, 61” and 72”.

The ZK range includes Wright’s premiere model boasting 37hp EFI Vanguard engines with a 16cc dual pump and motor transmission system from Hydro Gear, allowing the machines to reach up to 20km/h. This machine has a fuel capacity of 55 litres with dual tanks either side of the console for better weight distribution, split steel pulleys to withstand commercial use and with a 7 gauge steal fabricated chassis and deck, this machine will be able to handle Australia’s rugged terrain.

One of the best points of these machines is their capabilities on hills; each Stander ZK has the transmission, engine and deck on one platform. This means when the deck is lowered to the desired cutting height the centre of gravity for the machine lowers allowing this machine to become incredibly stable on any type of hill. The 72” deck also has the option of fitting a dual wheel kit to add extra grip and stability.

A few people have questioned why stand rather than sit?

There is a combination of reasons including comfortability as each stand-on is fitted with a suspended standing platform allowing it to absorb any vibrations, impacts from rocks/debris and adjusts for any undulating ground. Standing also reduces any additional stress, discomfort and injuries on the user’s back, which are commonly associated with sitting down all day while operating a machine.

From a safety standpoint these machines are second to none because if you are ever in an uncomfortable situation, there is an easy bail out method by stepping off

the back. Visibility on the stand-on is also second to none because you have a full 360-degree visual enabling the user to spot stumps, rocks and any other obstacles.

Only recently launched in Australia, Stander ZKs have already been purchased by large mowing area contractors.

Supported by Nationwide Dealer Servicing and Spare Parts program, you will receive the product and personal service you deserve.

Plus, they offer you a personal demonstration in order to see and trial the machine before you buy.

Equipped with the class-leading shaft driven gearbox, all alloy cutter housing, 230mm large ball bearing wheels and COX’s legendary swing back blades, they ensure a quality finish no matter what.

Other great features of this machine include 73-litre Darcon grass catcher, selective 3 speed gearbox with speeds including 3, 5 and 7km/h, with an extended cutting height range from 20mm to 80mm. These machines have been purpose built for a commercial setting and a front bumper bar has been installed to reduce the likelihood of damage occurring to surrounding obstacles.

One of the class leading features on this machine is the Kohler XTX engine, which has

Smart Choke, consistent cutting technology, easy pull recoil and the first Kohler engine which doesn’t require an oil change. Powered by the industry’s first swappable lithium-ion battery system, the Pro-Turn EV batteries were designed with flexibility in mind.

Unlike other electric machines which contain heavy batteries that makes swapping over hard, the Pro-Turn EV features four smaller and lighter rechargeable batteries, making swapping them easy, all whilst providing the same amount of power. The Pro-Turn EV also produces less emissions and less noise than petrol-powered commercial mowers.

You can save more on money and time with the Pro-Turn EV. Thanks to its energy efficient lithium-ion batteries, commercial mowing has been made more cost-effective over the machine’s lifetime, compared to the cost of purchasing petrol to power traditional commercial mowers. Users should also see less time spent maintaining their machines, as electric mowers require less maintenance due to containing fewer moving parts.

Featuring a foldable, rollover protection structure that protects the operator in the unlikely event of flipping, and a failsafe braking design which automatically applies the brake when the operator is not present, the Pro-Turn EV offers the highest level of safety. With the added advantage of a high back comfort seat with suspension combined with transaxles that are driven with a brushless electric drive motor that reduces vibration, this all combined ensures the user has all-day comfort while operating the mower.

The Pro-Turn EV is distributed by Masport here in Australia and is backed by a 5 Year/1500 hours commercial warranty, offering you peace of mind and promising you the quality, performance, and value you would expect from any Gravely zero-turn mower.

EcoTeq Electric Zero Turn (ZT) Mowers

A new era in commercial mowing performance

The popular adage “less is more” is a great way to describe the benefits of transitioning to electric commercial ZT mowers. Less noise, less emissions, less vibration, less running cost, less ongoing maintenance – all with greater performance, greater operator comfort and a more positive impact on the environment.

Sustainability and the impact of climate change is up for public scrutiny like never before. That pressure is being felt by landscape contractors and operators, encouraging proactive green action. Fortunately, battery electric technology has evolved significantly in the last 10 years. The era of “going green” without compromising performance, is now. Commercial battery-powered mowers that go all day Breakdowns, regular maintenance, stopping to refuel and minimising public noise disturbance are common experiences for commercial mowing operators. What if we told you that’s no longer the case?

Purpose-built from the ground up by Mean Green in the US, EcoTeq’s range of mowers are 100% electric. They are constructed from corrosion-resistant, lightweight aircraft alloy, which means they require less power to move, delivering faster speeds of up to 18.5 km per hour, and the battery life to power you through a full day’s work. That’s up to 8 hours of continuous run time, or up to 30 acres, on a single overnight battery charge!

The smart operation panel monitors remaining run time and warns operators when it’s time to head back to base to recharge. So you’ll never be stranded on site.

Because electric mowers do not have spark plugs, filters, belts, hydraulics, engine oil or grease points, maintenance and the costs associated are significantly reduced. So the transition to an electric mower equates to a saving of 70-80% in maintenance costs and keeps you on the job longer.

What’s more, electric mowers output around half the noise of petrol-powered equivalents. So with zero emissions coupled with low-noise operation, operators

have the peace of mind that they won’t be causing a public disturbance.

EcoTeq

VANQUISH: Up to 10 acres of continuous mowing on a single battery charge

The all-electric VANQUISH is built for all-day professional use with cutting widths of 52”or 60". VANQUISH delivers 7.5 hours of continuous mowing on a single integrated battery charge – or up to 10 acres – at speeds of up to 18.5km/hr. It’s the ideal choice for maintaining mid-sized public spaces.

EcoTeq RIVAL: Up to 15 acres of continuous mowing on a single battery charge

The EcoTeq RIVAL is a powerful and versatile choice for community mowing needs. Operable with your choice of a 52" or 60" deck, each charge delivers up to 7 hours of continuous run time and speeds up to 18km/hr, covering up to

15 acres per shift. EcoTeq RIVAL also features an ergonomically designed customisable high-back suspension seat to ensure optimum operator safety and comfort levels at all times.

EcoTeq EVO: up to 30 acres of mowing on a single battery charge

The flagship EVO is engineered to make light work of maintaining even the largest public spaces. Coupled with its expansive 74" deck and delivering up to 8 hours of run time at speeds to a maximum 21km/hr, it allows operators to mow 20-30 acres in a standard shift. A quiet and low maintenance option for mowing large, open spaces.

Floating Gabions The New Way to Green in 2022

Mark Paul, multi award winning horticulturist and founder of The Greenwall Company is predicting that floating gabions in residential, commercial and community spaces will be the new greening trend of 2022.

64 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Eye on the industry

With the right plant selection, soilless media, and the use of 97 per cent recycled materials for the base, they are a great low maintenance solution for stripping nutrient loads from ponds and lakes to add greenspace that is adaptable and easily moved from season to season.

Mark Paul created his first pond gabion back in 2011 for the pond in his family home, which just recently won the Australian Institute of Horticulture’s Residential

Greenspace award. Since then, he has adapted and tested different soilless media to ensure they are lightweight and easily moveable and introduced new materials and design templates to enable commercial use for larger scale projects. Adding another element to the small ecological systems tailored to the built environment.

“Our gabions are not just a one-size fits all solution as no two spaces are the same, especially when it comes to planting factors such as light, wind and aspect. We are also able to create unique shapes and sizes to ensure the perfect fit for all locations,” said Mark.

Key facts about The Greenwall Company’s Floating Gabions:

• All bespoke in design and plant pallet.

• Lightweight and easily moveable. Easy to cut back root and foliage mass 4-5 times yearly to strip and recycle nutrient loads.

• No traditional soil used, patented soilless media made of 97 per cent recycled materials only.

• Minimal maintenance due to media used and plant selection.

“Floating gabions are a great way to add amenity to wet areas at an affordable cost, with a great outcome. Adding greenery to ponds and lakes not only further enhances the natural beauty of the environment, but also the health benefits of getting out and about or relaxing in the garden,” adds Mark.

Over the past 35 years Mark has tested, designed, redesigned, and mastered his greenwalls to ensure they will last the lifetime of the building on which they are installed, further reducing waste.

The Greenwall Company has now installed their green infrastructure systems in over 2000 projects and will continue to work towards their goal of reclaiming the built environment with an increasing number of complex ecological systems involving walls / roofs / ponds / nutrient stripping / recycling / biodiversity and planned water management.

Why Satusteam™ will give your business the edge.

In an interview with Shaun Nelson, the Head of Presentation at Goodman, he said, “I have no doubt, with the stature of Goodman’s place in the (property management) market, if we were to mandate using Satusteam™, that would send a ripple effect through the industry and… a lot of our competitors would do the same.”

Weedtechnics has been working with Goodman to develop sustainable non toxic weed control practises in a pilot program using Satusteam with a handful of their landscape contractors.

Welcome to the world of Satusteam™ weed control!

“We are extremely proud that Goodman, an Australian company and a sustainability leader in global property management, has chosen Weedtechnics Satusteam weed control systems as a part of their ecological sustainability Charter,” says Jeremy Winer Managing Director and developer of the Satusteam system.

Wondering why? There are a number of benefits!

• Move away from chemicals, additives,

toxins, foaming agents required for weed control and cleaning hard surfaces.

• Move away from herbicide resistance, employee exposure to chemicals, WHS costs, storm and potable water contamination, negative impact on soil health biology.

• Satusteam is safe to use in urban highvisitation areas posing no risk, children, pets and chemically sensitive people.

• Weed control is productive, effective and costs drop over time as the method also depletes the weed seed bank.

Summer Living at its Best in Reimagined Sydney Courtyard

Having previously worked with the long-standing design and construction company, the client sought out Joanne Green Landscape and Interior to transform the outdoor space at their new home. The brief was to deliver a contemporary and tranquil area that would encourage indoor and outdoor living, encompassing space for outdoor dining as well as relaxed seating that could be enjoyed into the evenings with friends and family.

Set on a petite 40 square metres and positioned adjacent to the street, the creation of privacy while retaining a sense of openness was paramount. As was shade; the north facing property captured all day sun making the space beautifully light in winter but especially hot in summer months.

Having a clear picture of what was required, Joanne Neylon, Landscape

Designer and Director of Joanne Green Landscape and Interior worked towards realising the design, and demolition of the existing landscape began. A new levelled entertaining space with New Guinea Rosewood decking created the foundation for the design, and from there layers and details were added in the form of planting, lighting and furniture.

Custom planters were designed and built to fit within the space, framing the central entertaining areas. Along the western side of the property, custom fiberglass planters in Dulux Monument were installed above the decking and planted with Zoysia tenuifolia. “Zoysia is a fun plant with a unique look –it’s also low maintenance. Privacy wasn’t a concern here so the planting didn’t necessarily need height,” said Joanne. Large powder-coated steel edging framed

the newly created garden beds that were positioned at the front of the property, creating a sizeable space for a fuller garden, which would ultimately grow to provide privacy and shade. “We included a number of custom features in this design, but my favourite would be the Rosewood gate – it was a small design feature which serves a functional purpose but is equally beautiful,” Joanne added.

72 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Eye on the industry Photography by Nicholas Watt
Nestled in one of the city’s bustling harbourside suburbs, Joanne Green Landscape and Interior reimagined this Sydney courtyard to create a true inner-city sanctuary.

The plant palette included a classic mix of resilient exotics to create an informal result whilst providing interest, texture and movement to the space. Palms including Golden Cane (Dypsis lutescens) and Kentia (Howea forsteriana) were selected to add privacy from the street, shade and a sense of lushness, while Camellia (Camellia sasanqua) was chosen for its seasonal

change. “Our client had specifically requested a plant that would add colour and something she could pick, so the camellia delivered this perfectly,” said Joanne. The front garden beds also included Buxus bodinieri, Rain Lily (Zephyranthes candida), and Azalea ‘Alba Magnifica’, while Chinese Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) and Stephanotis floribunda

was trained to grow as a perfumed backdrop to the relaxed lounge area.

To make the outdoor space functional, the addition of small and subtle details was essential and included strategically placed outdoor lighting, installing irrigation, and relocating gas services to accommodate a barbecue. “Lighting is often something people overlook in a design but is an important element especially for those wanting to enjoy Sydney’s warm evenings outdoors,” Joanne commented. “We used a mix of overhead, wall, step, barbecue and garden lighting in a classic bronze finish to complete the space.”

Through inspired design and detailed construction, the project delivered was an undeniably stunning outdoor space.

“It wasn’t until the client had arranged the furniture that I thought, ‘this reminds me of the south of France’,” said Joanne. “It was the combination of colours, the striped awnings, lush palms and perhaps the ‘apartment near the ocean’ locale that evoked these feelings. I love it, and I know

Impactful safety solutions

Safety eyewear has become an important and integral part of life.

It’s no surprise that over 60 per cent of eye injuries occur either at work or whilst participating in active sports. No matter whether you’re at work, home or play, the high number of risks causing eye injury reinforces the need to wear quality safety eyewear.

In the dark but not too distant past, eye protection was ugly, clumsy and uncomfortable. And don’t even think

about prescription glasses… those clumsy over specs that didn’t fit and obstructed vision. Luckily, thanks to innovations in technology, you can now purchase sexy eye protection that looks as good in the boat as it does at work –while still providing the best protection available.

There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to eye protection. The frame and lens

needed will be different from person to person, and from activity to activity.

Shamir OHS not only offers an extensive range of safety and sun eyewear for both prescription and non-prescription lenses, they also offer one of the largest available ranges of impact resistant lens materials, high performance coatings, and frame technologies. Our safety lenses are often made of polycarbonate or Trivex® making them thinner, lighter, and ideal for long term

Breaking the Bias Against Women in Landscaping

From the bottom to the top and in every area of the landscaping sector, we find women challenging prejudice. One might conjecture that, in 2022, surely the landscaping industry is no longer biased against women. Unfortunately, landscaping is still heavily male-dominated and the women trying to break through are pioneers for the generations who will follow. Whilst change has been creeping into the field, landscaping is a trade; one of the last bastions of male dominance. Many men believe that women simply do not belong. So, what is the experience of bias like for women in landscaping today? What motivates them to persevere and what advice would they give to other women hoping to join them? I spoke with a number of inspiring women about their experiences in the modern landscaping sector.

Caroline Shaw and Melanie Addlem work for Shaw Landscape Group in Wollongong. Caroline is the General Manager and Head of Company Culture whilst her husband Scott Shaw is the Founder and Creative Landscapes Director. Melanie is Marketing Manager and Head of Client Experience at the company. The company regularly employs other women such as Paris Halsey who recently completed her final 2 years at Shaw Landscape Group before finishing her apprenticeship in Landscape Construction.

On joining the business in 2017, Caroline simply wanted to bring her wealth of business acumen and experience to help take the landscaping business to the next level. With a BTEC National Diploma in Business and Marketing from London, over 25 years’ experience running a variety of businesses, and 15 years studying personal development and business philosophies, Caroline knew she could make a difference. Having not previously worked in trades, she did not think about encountering bias, however, she had identified several flaws in the industry, such as a real lack of customer service and a lack of female presence. At the time, the company was 100% male as were most of their competitors, suppliers and the like.

Unfortunately, even in the office of landscaping businesses, you can still find bias clinging. You might have thought that as general manager of the business, Caroline would not have been subject to bias, especially with her vast experience and business savvy, but this is not the case. Even now, some men are tempted to view her as just ‘the wife’ rather than the driven and talented professional she is.

Melanie is Marketing Manager and Head of Client Experience at Shaw Landscape Group. She too was new to the trade, coming from the fashion industry. Melanie loves working at Shaw Landscape Group and finds the industry to be like a breath of fresh air, however, she has experienced bias when out on site. The prejudice is usually from other trades on a busy commercial site who don’t often work with women. Regrettably, many men fail to recognise the real effect it can have on women as a whole.

Despite this, Melanie loves the creativity landscaping offers and is motivated by helping improve customer experiences and building excellent client relationships. Many people find building and renovating their properties to be stressful so improved focus on communication and daily client satisfaction is paramount, particularly with an ever-growing female client base.

The good news is, that as both GM and Head of Company Culture, Caroline has managed to turn Shaw Landscape Group

into a great place for men and women to work side-by-side. Caroline is motivated to do her very best for the business and their growing staff. By focusing on worklife balance, safety and respect in the workplace, women are free to follow their dream of a career in landscaping. With the right attitude and support, Paris was able to emphatically demonstrate that women are just as strong, capable and smart as the guys, if not even more so.

Just like Caroline and her team at Shaw Landscape Group, Simon and Victoria Davies at Manuka Gardens are avidly working to break the bias against women in landscaping. Victoria is Business Manager at Manuka Gardens, whilst her husband Simon is Managing Director and Head of Landscape Gardening. Victoria can certainly empathise with Caroline, reporting that there have been some ‘old school’ clients and contractors who always want to speak to the bloke. Despite launching the business together, some older generation men insist on treating Victoria as less knowledgeable, experienced or consequential than Simon.

Whilst the prejudice experienced by Caroline, Melanie and Victoria is relatively subtle, Manuka Gardens currently employs two young women who have had far more overt experiences of bias. Before joining Manuka Gardens, Tayla Croker and Mikhala Beaumont spent parts of their apprenticeships with what can only be described as less than ideal

employers. Both women were treated by their employers as though women had no place in landscaping and their failure was inevitable. Both women were determined to succeed despite having to endure daily insults, derision, and highly unequal treatment. Both women are keen to point out that many of the younger men on site were far more supportive and respectful than the management, which hopefully reflects broader generational change and bodes well for the future of women in the industry.

Tayla and Mikhala were both aware they might experience some degree of sexism and bias as trade apprentices, although neither of them realised the extent of the workplace bullying and sexual harassment they might encounter. Nevertheless, they have worked extremely hard, physically and mentally, to excel at their trades. Both were fortunate to be employed by Manuka Gardens part-way later in their apprenticeships and the experience could not be more different. Their true value and potential have been recognised and nurtured. Simon and Victoria are far more progressive in their hiring approach than some landscaping firms, hiring individuals purely based on their skillsets and attributes. Aki Collins is a female horticulture apprentice the business has recently taken on, and all the women praise the support, friendship and camaraderie they experience at Manuka Gardens.

Having recently completed their apprenticeships, Mikhala and Tayla’s outstanding attitudes and skills have been recognised by the industry. In 2021 Mikhala was awarded Landscape Construction Apprentice of the Year by The Landscape Association NSW and ACT. Tayla was the first female to ever compete at the national level of the WorldSkills Competition, crowning that achievement with a Silver Medal. Both women are shining lights in the industry, demonstrating that not only can women participate in the landscaping industry, but they can absolutely ace it!

Neither Tayla nor Mikhala set out to be pioneers for women in landscaping, they were looking simply to fulfill themselves with satisfying careers that suited their interests. Mikhala had both ADHD and a creative streak so landscape construction appeals to her through its physical aspects, the variety, and the need to use every part of your mind and body.

Tayla was interested in the outdoors and sustainability so she too was naturally drawn to landscaping. However, their early experiences sharpened the motivations of these exceptional young women.

Tayla originally wanted to stay out of the spotlight, fearing to be judged for being female. When it became apparent invisibility was impossible, she resolved to show the industry just what women are capable of. She is now leading the way and mentoring other women to help them to also succeed. Originally, Mikhala was motivated by anger at her treatment, determined to show the strengths women can possess. She is now driven to help change the bias against women in the industry and lead by example. Mikhala and Tayla are both overwhelmingly proud of their achievements to date and relish the fact that they are making other employers sit up and take notice of the potential assets they have been overlooking. They are also delighted that other young women, who may have been intimidated or unsure of entering landscaping, have been inspired to take the plunge.

March 8 is International Womens’ Day and The Landscape Association is proud to support the industry to #BreakTheBias against women in landscaping. Together, we can create stronger industry that appreciates the passion, creativity and skills each and every landscaping professional offers to the field.

LIAWA to tackle government recognition

Landscapers over the years have been called many things, but there is no doubt the term ‘Cowboy’ comes to mind more often than not.

Sadly, this is not true of all those in our industry and at our awards night 12 months ago, it was obvious that WA landscapers are producing innovative and professional work right across our state.

After arriving from London in 1992 where horticulture and particularly landscaping is at the forefront as a career, it has been interesting to watch our greenlife industry grow here in Western Australia over the past 30 years. Growth in housing and government infrastructure projects, particularly in and around the Perth CBD, has catapulted landscaping into an essential service.

Covid too – despite its overall impact across the world – has been thankfully kind to our industry with gardening trends and people’s participation on the up with many turning to their outdoor rooms for some DIY landscaping.

What this all translates into is that we have an industry that is begging to be regulated and although the days of the ute, shovel/barrow and a couple of mates with their four-legged friend will continue to be around, LIAWA’s vision and journey over the coming two to three years must be to enforce industry regulation.

To achieve this it must be engaged with government and be seen as a proactive voice in their decision making, actively work with TAFE to help develop core training units that correspond with industry needs,

continue to build its membership base so there is a continued presence in the public domain of LIAWA members who are seen as the trained professionals in landscaping and finally, the commencement of piecing together an internal, formal recognition program for its members under the Master Landscaper Scheme.

These are all key initiatives. Some are short term and others long-term. It is therefore hoped that in 10 or 20 years’ time what we have as an industry now will have been superseded by stricter guidelines to not only protect the consumer, but also to assist in the future of landscape career pathways as a professional and recognised trade.

LIAWA’s focus is all about numbers and their first task must be to build its membership base now. In doing this it can then become a recognised voice and with landscapers popping up daily, Executive

“It’s so easy to sit back and pick the low hanging fruit of those landscapers who are constantly in the public eye, but it is those who aren’t that we need to connect with. If you look back in time some of our well-established landscapers all started with a shovel and ute and have progressed to the heady heights they now acclaim. In time there will be more of these businesses coming into our industry and it is our responsibility to assist in their journey and ensure they meet the standards our industry needs to meet that all important government recognition.”

With membership and sponsorship soaring and real interest in LIAWA’s events and recently launched podcast ‘The Green Thumbs Up’, all bodes well for a successful year ahead for LIAWA. LM
