It feels as though we’ve only just caught our breath after a mammoth Diesel Dirt & Turf in Sydney’s west, and now everyone’s excited about another great event. This time it’s the Landscape Show in June at Victoria’s beautifully presented Caulfield Racecourse. The Landscape Show is run by the Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers, and is chock-a-block with industry-specific advice, equipment and information. The organisers say it’s ‘… the must-attend event for all commercial and residential landscape contractors, maintenance specialists, landscape designers and architects, landscape service and product suppliers, as well as councils, students and educators in Victoria’.

That’s a fair chunk of the industry, and nobody would want to miss it.

Naturally we’re not spending all our time attending, or packing the sunblock for, awesome industry siorées – more’s the pity.

No. We have a magazine to produce and that means rolling up the sleeves and getting stuck into some real work.

Test drives in this issue include the AEG 18-volt Fusion secateurs, Shamir Australia 150 Bercy medium-impact safety glasses and the UHI XU20 mini excavator. They may seem worlds apart in size and function, but they’re all cutting-edge as far as technology goes. Powered, cordless secateurs are serious pro equipment, and when time’s money, good tools like the AEG Fusion gear can make a huge difference to a business’ bottom line. The same can be said of the UHI. Instead of sending in a team with mattocks, shovels and breaker bars, a compact mini excavator made to operate

in confined spaces can mean a huge saving in time, manpower and resources. And of course, occupational health and safety is of the very highest importance in any workplace, and on worksites where the dust, rock and woodchip is flying, looking after workers’ vision is paramount. It’s not only vision which needs to be protected. There’d be very few workers whose feet are as much at risk of work-related injury as those moving and shaping earth and landscapes, and our cover story this issue is from a true Australian success story, Blundstone boots.

Good ol’ ‘Blundies’ have been an Aussie icon for as long as anyone can remember, and the brand’s continuing to set ever-higher standards in style, comfort and protection. The company shared some great advice

with readers of LCM as you’ll see when you get to the story.

Every business needs to be on top of advances in those categories, and LCM does its best to keep the Australian landscaping industry professional up-to-date.

And if, occasionally, it means we have to pack our bags and head out to lavish and expensively catered gatherings of landscaping and earthmoving luminaries in exotic settings, well, that’s a burden we’ll just have to tolerate.

Enjoy this issue, and if we don’t run into you at The Landscape Show at Caulfield, we’ll see you here next issue.

Changing software

As your business grows and evolves your software needs will change too. Changing software is a daunting prospect and not one you can rush into. It can be very time consuming and disruptive, so it is vital you plan well for it.

The first step is research!

The very first step is to dive deep into the processes of your own business. Understand what is working and what needs improving. Consult your staff, ask them where improvements need to be made. Consulting with staff from top to bottom at this early stage will vastly improve your chances of them happily adopting a new system.

Write yourself a list of must-haves and research how those are met with each package. For the most vital processes, such as estimating, try to get a complete understanding of how the software works. Ensure it meets all your needs before you commit.

Look closely at the software specifically designed for your industry, but also look at packages designed for similar industries, ones of those may fit your business better.

Compare your business’s end-to-end processes with how the software works. Yes, you can (and will likely need to) change your processes to fit the software a little, but the closer they match the better.

Look at how you run your business from end-to-end. Where is the software missing? How are you going to plug that gap? Can you change your processes OR do you need to find additional software to meet that need?

Research how the software will integrate with other software you are using, especially

your accounting software. Ideally, they will be API compatible, meaning they are able to ‘talk’ to each other.

Understand the weaknesses of the software. All options will have their pros and cons, the aim is to select software that has more pros for the elements you have identified as most important for your business.

Look into the future and try to predict how the software will support you as your business evolves. Changing software packages is difficult, so try to make sure you’re not going to outgrow the new one in two years.

Trial a short list of software packages in order to thoroughly test their strengths

and weaknesses. You can never truly understand software until you use it in the field, so try to do that if possible. It may take you a good chunk of time, but it’s way less time than it will cost you if you select the wrong package.

Focus on the features, not the cost. Of course everyone has a budget, but the software that meets your needs better than all the others will be worth the cost. Each need that is not met will cost you more money through lost time and/or subscribing to additional software to fill the gap. Not to mention the cost of losing frustrated staff.

Step two is to prepare!

Once you have selected the software package you are going with, you need to prepare your staff and your business for the changeover. None of the Estimating and Project Management packages out there allow you to data dump from one to the other (it is not in their best interest to make it easy for you to change) so you will likely need to run two software packages concurrently for a short while.

It is more complicated than flicking a switch, so write an action plan for the changeover. Set out the steps the business will take and get your staff on board with them.

Prepare the staff by speaking openly with them about the changeover and especially the reason for it. The more they understand and agree with the move, the more likely they are to adopt it.

Spend time getting your team to buy into the idea. Everyone needs to be involved. Yes, the key users are most important, but the change will affect everyone.

Invest in training for your staff. Software can be frustrating to use at first, and the easier you make it for people the more likely they are to adopt it. A cost-effective way is to train key staff and get them to guide the rest. The worst thing you can do is dump the new software on them and ask them to fend for themselves. I’ve been there and it is not fun!

Step three is integrating!

Integrate the software into the business as you have set out in the action plan.

An all-in approach can be problematic and disruptive. A good option is to roll it out in one department at a time, or with one team at a time. Start small and push it through the business as your confidence and understanding of it grows.

It often takes time to change over, with a backlog of jobs in the old system, so changing over slowly on a job-by-job basis may take more time, but it is often the less disruptive option.

You will need to rewrite and reimagine your policies and procedures, updating them to fit the new way things are done in the new software. This exercise is a really good way for you to look at the software through a microscope, allowing you to pick up problems early.

Over time (the shorter the better, but don’t rush it) the whole business will be running smoothly in the new system, and you will reap the benefits.

Switching software is hard work, but if your current software is not meeting your needs then you need to do it asap. Construction software has seen massive improvements in the last five years, so unless your software is keeping up with the times, there’s a big chance something else would save you a tonne of money, time and frustration. Don’t let the points above turn you off moving, don’t let them delay you. Instead, understand that yes, the move is going to suck, but the short-term pain will have huge long-term gains! LC

Synthetic and safety surfaces

Most surfaces in the industrialised world are made from synthetic materials. That is, they don’t have a natural origin like concrete, rubber, steel or composite materials. Safety surfaces are also synthetic but provide us with secure footing to reduce the risk of slipping and falling.

We can treat existing surfaces to mitigate this hazard or carefully consider it when designing an area. For instance, heavy industrial machinery on a sloped, polished concrete floor could slip

when loaded unless we coat the surface with a slip-resistant sealant. By using manufactured materials we impact our natural environment less by not extracting natural materials (the big exception being concrete) and using materials which don’t deplete our natural resources in their manufacture.

Artificial surfaces always look their best and therefore provide a greater aesthetic appeal all year long. They reduce maintenance costs because they are quicker to install and are immediately available to users after installation. In the sporting and recreation area they provide sure, stable surfaces, which help minimise the risk of injury and enhance sporting performance.

We could construct pathways and entertainment areas using concrete pavers, recycled concrete, porous pavers, artificial grass, road base and rubber to name but a few synthetic materials. The ongoing maintenance of concrete is minimal, runoff is easily managed and it has a long lifespan.

TIP: If you need more than 8 cubic metres of concrete on a job, regardless of how easy access is, consider using a concrete pump. The time and effort saved is priceless. Remember, properly done formwork and reinforcements are critical to the result.

One example of porous paving is using recycled glass consisting of bonding processed post-consumer glass with a mixture of resins, pigments and binding agents. The product provides a permeable paving material that also reuses materials that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills.

If we decided to install a soft, durable surface such as rubber, we would use wet pour rubber because it does not need a flat surface for installation because it will follow the natural gradient of the land and is simple to lay. Various thicknesses can be applied to suit the purpose and site. This type of surface is popular indoors and outdoors in childcare centres, preschools,

schools, sporting clubs, aged care facilities, residential sites, pool surrounds and walkways, gym floors; and between pavers, apartment common areas and apartment balconies.

An excellent example of this sustainable approach is the products produced by A1 Rubber (www.A1rubber.com.au) who upcycle stripped rubber from old tyres. It’s Australia’s leading manufacturer of commercial rubber flooring and ramps; playground, recreational, sports and equine surfacing; acoustic underlays; and general safety matting.

Similarly, if we need to create a playground for children, the surfaces would consist of soft fall materials such as environmentally friendly recycled rubber tyres, shock absorbing pads of synthetic grass, washed and screened certified playground sand and different purpose-made mulches, such as Port Stephens pine mulch and Playbark. The degree and type of soft fall required is determined by several factors including the height of the play equipment.

The creative possibilities are endless. Rubber mulch can be used in a variety of ways for the base of playground equipment and general play areas. We can use soft-fall loose mix similar to the way garden mulch is spread and it fits into any space or it can be used in interlocked pieces, much like carpet tiles that fit together.

TIP: The Australian Standards for Playgrounds should be consulted by anyone planning, designing, building or maintaining a playground. To purchase a copy of the Australian Standards for Playgrounds, visit: www.standards.org.au

Using all kinds of bright colours in rubber, you can incorporate everything from running tracks to four square and hopscotch activities in the same area. Other options include extra line markings for mini football, cricket, netball and tennis.

Some surfaces assist the less able people in our community to be more mobile and safer in their journeys. Tactile paving is a system of textured ground surface indicators to indicate stairways, ramps, changes of direction, overhead obstructions below a height of 2000mm and hazards within a circulation space or adjacent to a path of travel. They can be found on many footpaths, stairs and train station platforms to assist blind and vision impaired pedestrians. AS1428 is the Australian Standard for access and mobility for the visually impaired in our community.

We can also help ensure the surfaces we use are non-slippery and safe. Cheap and easy to install safety devices include antislip self-adhesive tapes and floor marking tapes to help guide pedestrians. Existing surfaces can be made safer by applying liquid agents. There are several anti-slip liquids on the market that you can apply to existing vinyl, concrete and terrazzo surfaces. After allowing it to dry, a clear invisible slip-resistant film remains, making floors safer to walk on.

There are tile and stone treatments which make surfaces safer by providing excellent slip resistance when wet. Using a penetrative material, the process prevents a film of moisture occurring between the foot and the tile, providing a permanent, safe solution to the problem of slippery tiles. Some distributors even offer insulating and sound deadening effects in their penetrating agents.

TIP: From experience, one cannot use it over newly painted concrete.

Self-adhesive mats are used in low visibility areas (inside and outside) where there is a risk of slipping or falling. They are also quick and easy to apply and are used in commercial kitchens, at entrances, to help reduce fatigue when standing in the one spot for hours and in wet areas.

To better manage the risk of falls and possible injury using stairs, we minimise those risks.

We could entirely cover steps with a rubber surface or cover the nose of each

step. Stair nosings are installed to warn people of the impending edge and provide better grip.

Other choices could be a tactile surface made from high-grade stainless steel, luminous anti-slip self-adhesive tape, or a metal-coated carborundum insert. Most of these products come in a range of colours. Most will not wear away, peel, chip, crack or fade for many years. Go to www.floorsafe.com.au or ring 1300 369 689 for all the answers.

All those electrical leads that lie on the floors of our home, office and workshops can cause us to trip or fall if we are not careful. Again, to minimise risk of injury to ourselves and others, think about covering them using purpose-built cable covers, which are also available in a range of materials and colours to suit. Try www.floorsafe.com.au for answers.

Even the ubiquitous Aussie lawn may be under threat these days from synthetic materials because we recognise how much energy, time, water and money it takes to install and maintain one. With artificial grass there is no mowing, no watering, no pesticides, no fertilising. You have the perfect lawn all year round. The UV protection means no fading and it tolerates heavy traffic. It’s the perfect solution for

shaded areas where plants will not grow. An average backyard can be covered in a day over flat and sloping ground ready for immediate use.

Safety on our roads, in our carparks and near schools is of paramount importance to our communities. One of the contributing factors to road safety is the road surface itself. Skidding results in many crashes, particularly on the approaches to intersections and pedestrian crossings when the road is wet.

OmniCrete (www.omnicrete.com.au) uses specialist synthetic-coloured aggregates for application to bus, transit and cycle lanes; and school and pedestrian crossings, roads, highways and bridge pavements. Their product is very durable and skid resistant for the design life of the product in wet conditions. This surfacing system is comprised of 75 per cent recycled content. This, combined with the fact that the resin binding system contains no solvents and minimal Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), also makes this surfacing system compliant with the specifications of the Green Building Council of Australia.

Newly developed photo luminescent paints light up roads for up to 10 hours helping to guide drivers. Temperature responsive paints produce patterns on the road to warn drivers of slippery conditions.

Whether we are walking through a landscape, relaxing in it or using it for recreational purposes, we all like to think that the surface of that landscape is secure, environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing to us. The built environment uses synthetic materials for different purposes and to help us evoke different emotions in us.

So, the next time you’re walking along, be mindful of the composition of the material on which you are walking and ask yourself, could it be made safer, more long lasting, more aesthetically pleasing or more environmentally friendly? If the answer is yes, voice your opinion to the decision makers in your community and help improve life for our next generation. LC

Soil blends

Considering the deluges our eastern seaboard is getting, it’s quite poignant that drainage and aeration was our last conversation. If you’re based in the areas of these prolonged rainfall events, I hope your drainage was suitable and aeration was maintained.

As we journey on our quest to achieve designed intent, it’s time we burrow into the realm of blended soils. Although it’s generally preferable to amend and work with the native topsoil on site, often can be the case, that we need to import soil blends to mimic or construct a new soil profile. If the site has been stripped of topsoil, when we’re installing in planters or developing roof gardens, we’ll find ourselves in the need to import appropriate growing media from a reputable and reliable supplier.

During my work through NSW, I call into landscape suppliers to take a look at what’s being sold as ‘garden soil’. The variations and qualities are quite significant and, in some cases, quite concerning. Many products look satisfactory from an initial glance, but upon closer inspection, they can be a worry. The stockpile is still steaming (indicating the organic matter is still composting), the blend may be poorly graded with inappropriate compost or

concentrated clumps of organic matter, such as spent mushroom compost. The PH can vary from acids of 4 up to steaming alkaline composts of 9. I dread to think what would be found if a full chemical analysis was taken of the dubious soil mixes we’ve all probably seen.

I’m sure that most suppliers don’t intentionally sell questionable growing medias. Often is the case that the merchant doesn’t have a full understanding of the science that goes into the creation of landscape soil blends. Afterall, his principal line of products are more often sands and aggregates.

It’s a big relief that each year our industry matures that little bit more and the good old days of ‘she’ll be right’ materials are gradually becoming fewer. Once again, it all gets back to education. When you find a sand and gravel merchant selling questionable growing media or worse still, you have experienced the ill effects of installing the poor material, it’s very

important to discuss with and hopefully educate the merchant about the importance of getting the soil blends right so they are fit for purpose. Quite a few of the smaller regional merchants blend their own materials from questionable resources with little understanding that different plants have different needs.

Another issue observed through most supplier yards is the size of the stockpile and the drainage capability of the storage bay. As horticulturists and landscape professionals perhaps three questions on our minds should be:

1. How often is the stockpile, which is rich in organic matter being, turned to enable healthy levels of gaseous exchange?

2. Does the storage bay have a base surface that enables drainage? We know the outcomes when organic matter is steeped in water with no oxygen.

3. So, what’s going on in the bottom of the storage bay of that expensive media that you’re about to invest in?

Whenever you’re buying landscape soil blend, always ask the loader to take the material from the top of the pile. The deeper you go, the less air there is!

Naturally, as we’re supplying these products to the consumer, we have duty of care to ensure that the product we are supplying is fit for purpose and complies with Australian Standard 4419.

If you’re unaware of AS 4419:2018. The objective of this Standard is to provide manufacturers with a set of requirements which will ensure that soils can support plant growth and to give users, such as growers, landscape designer and consumers, assurance of the suitability and quality of soils.

The requirement of the standard is to specify soils that are suitable for majority of plants. It does not cover soils for plants with special requirements such as cricket pitches, orchids, cactus, succulents and other specialised sporting turfs.

So how can we learn more about landscape soil blends?

As a practicing and consulting horticulturist there are two bibles and one document I regularly consult with and refer to. The document being the afore mentioned AS4419:2018 and the bibles being:

1. Soils for landscape development –authors Simon Leake and Elke Haege.

2. Growing media for ornamental plants and turf – authors Kevin Handreck and Neil Black.

I strongly recommend investing in these valuable tools.

Hopefully this article will arouse your interest in this important topic, and you will dig deeper into learning about constructing effective soil profiles. It’s a whole lot more than backing the truck up and tipping a load of blend into the yard.

As the science and understanding of

horticulture in the built environment increases so too will be the expectations put upon us to create quality soil profiles that enable plants to perform and achieve the designed intent.

As I only have you for 15 minutes or so, let’s leap into physical properties of the standard soil that is hopefully available for you to collect from the supplier tomorrow morning. We can chew into the other three classifications the next time we speak.

So putting chemical analysis aside, let’s take a look at the first classification of landscape soils and what goes into it.

PRODUCTIVE, COMPACT & AGILE. SMOOTH TO OPERATE & EASY TO SERVICE.

The mineral content of these soils is generally sand, gravel, ash and occasionally minor elements of silt and clay. Silt and clay content often depends on the standard of the sandy loam that the manufacturer started with.

Looking at the table on page 18, this class is broken down into three different grades being low to high in organic matter content.

Let’s look at what organic matter does for this specific soil and plant ecology, then we can unpack the quantities of organic matter and what it will mean for your project.

The organic matter in these soil blends provides nutrients, assists with moisture retention, improves aeration by separating the mineral particles and will eventually decompose to valuable humus compounds. Essentially, the organic matter content in the soil is delivering the structure to an otherwise unstable sandy soil.

Looking at the percentages of organics, I would always be wary of using a product at the high end. 15–25% OM is a significant amount of organic matter to be situated more than 10cm underground.

The amount of oxygen the organisms in this soil will require to survive will come at a cost to the plants. Coupled with the likelihood that once the material has been spread out, foot traffic will compact it and further restrict gaseous exchange. If you can keep this soil aerated and draining freely into the sub soil then the plants will most likely grow quite rapidly. Keep in mind that as the high level of organic matter decomposes, you will see the soil levels contract to the point where some root balls may become visible.

When importing soils for backfilling over 30cm in depths, my preference is to spread

a sandy loam with no organic matter present and fork this into the sub soil to ensure against layering, my next step is to import a soil blend with a low or medium organic matter content and fork that into the loam to ‘key’ the next layer into the lower. Be very careful spreading landscape soil blends at depths more than 30cm. When doing this it’s very important to keep the soil well aerated. Use boards and loosen areas you’ve walked on with a fork. Sure, there’s exceptions to rules and no doubt there are occasions when bulk backfilling of landscape blends hasn’t created the dire outcomes that can happen. Please keep in mind that during these very wet times, organic matter will be starved of oxygen. When this happens, it’s no longer a benefit to your cause.

I’m looking forward to discussing soil blends further in our next chat. LC

Advanced containers

When it comes to selecting plants for installation in a landscape, big is often better. Advanced trees and shrubs provide instant impact, but this benefit can come at considerable cost. Advanced plants are often container grown for the landscaping industry.

Landscape Tree Stock Specification is designed for production nurseries supplying into the landscape, wholesale and retail supply chains to ensure nursery stock meets stringent quality guidelines thereby reducing the risk of plant failure and improving useful life expectancy of plants in the landscape. The best management guideline specifications provide instructions

with Australian Standard AS 2303:2018. Recent research undertaken by Horticulture Innovation Australia found that nursery stock measurements taken across Australia show that landscape trees have a much greater variation in size index than the current standard indicates. For landscapers selecting trees, this might mean that they are now rejecting trees based on a standard

that is too limited for tree production. However, the introduction of specifications and guidelines does provide some assurance that the investment in advance container grown plants can be made with some degree of certainty as to the success of that stock post planting.

Container types

The range of containers that production nurseries utilise for advanced plant production is as diverse as the plants they grow. Advanced stock is usually categorised by container sizes ranging from 25 litres to 2000 litres. Standard round black plastic containers are often utilised to grow advanced plants due to their relatively cheap cost, the savings made however, do have limitations in terms of plant quality, particularly in the root zone. Standard round containers can impact plant development and root architecture as the smooth interior surface of round containers can lead to circling roots and plants becoming ‘root bound’, which may ultimately result in failure of the plant post planting through an inability to develop a well-formed structural root plate.

Several container manufacturers now produce what are referred to as root trainers. Root trainers encourage roots at the interface with the internal side of the pot to grow in a downwards direction. A root trainer usually has grooves on the inside of the container, encouraging the roots to grow downward, and therefore prevent the plant from becoming root bound in the container. Whenever the roots encounter resistance on the edge of the container, they change direction and are ‘funnelled’ towards the bottom of the container resulting in a straight, well-developed root system. This avoids the problem of circling roots that grow in a spiral pattern, which over time can cause plants to become root bound in a container. A critical plant characteristic to avoid when purchasing advanced container grown stock.

It’s in the bag

Grow bags or planter bags are also a popular method for growing advanced plants. Available in a range of materials, the high strength woven polypropylene planter bags are one of the most popular, designed to withstand our harsh climate with high levels of UV inhibitor. The porous nature of many grow bags due to their woven construction and drainage holes in the bottom and lower

sides provide adequate drainage for good root development. The root bound effect that can occur in traditional plastic pots doesn’t tend to occur with planter bags. Instead, when the roots hit the edge of the bag, they come in contact with the air. Air contact causes the root to stop growing, this alternatively encourages new roots to begin to form on the plant. This ‘air pruning’ promotes many smaller roots and makes

it easier to transplant or move to a bigger grow bag later on. The benefit to the end user is a root system that has developed a fibrous mass of feeder roots that will assist with plant establishment once planted. One drawback with planter bag stock is that the porous nature of the bags can lead to plants drying out if watering is not effectively managed. As with all stock brought onsite, plants should be installed

as soon as possible to eliminate the risk of roots being compromised through water stress, particularly during hot weather. The popularity of bags is their relative ease to move around and transport with stitched handles making it easy for onsite relocation of plants. There are also planter bags that are biodegradable, allowing for direct planting into site soil, although there are limitations on such practices, and it is usually best to

plant with an exposed root system to allow for better root development.

3D root air pruning

An innovative technology that has been in use for a number of years now in the production of advanced tree stock is the Rocket Pot Tree Growing System. The RPTG system helps to produce a high-quality root system that supports developing trees. The Rocket Pot containers are comprised

of cusps in the wall and floor of the container that stops roots from circling and guides them to open space for air root-pruning. There is a 5 per cent open area in the walls and 10 per cent open area in the cuspate plastic base beneath the container that allows the tree to ‘breathe’ even with low porosity growing media. The deep cusps on the walls of the container guides root tips to the outer edge of the cusps exposing them to the air where they will desiccate through air pruning. This in turn stimulates the production of several new roots to emerge well back along the root and grow out to become leaders if the Rocket Pot is removed or become desiccated if it is not removed. The process is repeated over and over until the pore space is fully utilised. Once the tree reaches a state of equilibrium, little growth occurs until the Rocket Pot is removed and the tree is planted. Given a well-drained and aerated planting site, the tree roots can rapidly explore and establish the site soil.

Maintenance of advance tree plantings

Advance container stock is no different in its requirements for establishment in landscape installations to smaller stock plants. The regular regime of watering, fertilising, pruning and pest and disease control are paramount to successful establishment and ongoing plant health. With advance stock there may be additional requirements and it is always wise to consult the nursery supplier for any special requirements for preparation for planting and establishment of advance stock in the first year of installation, however establishment periods can vary from three months to three years. Several factors need to be considered for successful establishment including climate, microclimate, edaphic factors, plant size and type of plants.

While there are many types of advance container systems and plants to choose from, at the end of the day it comes down to selecting plants from a reputable supplier with a track record for quality. Investing in advance container plants for landscape installations is buying time and as with any investments, it may be advisable to consult an expert in the field of advance plant care and maintenance to help in making informed decisions and determining the best approach for achieving desired outcomes. Give your old boots the boot

While it may seem unnecessary to change boots that look like they’re still fine to wear, work boots don’t last forever. Boots that have been worn out over time will start to lose their protective qualities and safety experts warn that wearing worn-out boots with compromised safety

features increases general foot ailments and can become a dangerous health hazard when working in high-risk environments.

According to Adrian Blandford, Global Work and Safety Range Manager of iconic Australian boot brand, Blundstone, Aussies tend to be a sentimental bunch

when it comes to their boots, with many boot owners reluctant to give up the soles guarding their feet due to the nostalgic value they hold. “Feet are a critical factor in overall health as when they are out of alignment, so is the rest of the body. With an unbelievable 100 plus tonnes of pressure put on feet daily, it’s important to wear well-maintained boots with cushioning and arch support to keep you safe and comfortable on site,” he says.

“Foot problems are often the result of neglect, lack of awareness and lack of proper care of footwear, so ensuring that you replace old, worn-out boots without delay is a simple way to avoid pain and damage to your feet, as well as other health issues including back ache and compromised circulation,” continues Blandford.

These five tell-tale signs are the best indicators of when it’s time to give your boots the boot:

28 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > On the cover
Put your safety and comfort at the top of the priority list with new boots.

1. Wear and tear

While some scuffs are manageable and the nature of many peoples’ jobs, it’s important this doesn’t get out of hand. As soon as any protective components, such as a steel, reinforced toe or a metatarsal guard begin to show, it’s time to replace your work boots. This is also true for treads and soles. If they’re significantly worn down or rubbed smooth then they’re not providing the required grip and protection. Once the structural integrity of a boot has been compromised to this extent, they will not be compliant to Australian standard AS 2210.3:2019, meaning you could be banned from a work site until the boots are replaced.

2. Torn leather

When leather begins to tear or crack, it can often lead to leakage and your boots should be replaced. What’s more, if the leather sags it could mean that the boot has lost its structural cohesion and therefore is no longer supporting your foot, which may result in compliance failure.

3. Impacted boots

Boots should be replaced if there’s any sign of significant impact or trauma. Depending on the safety boot, there will be signs to tell when a boot has suffered severe damage. Steel toed boots will dent inwards, however with composite materials, the internal structure can be damaged without any signs.

4. Exposure to harmful substances

If your line of work involves exposure to hazardous or corrosive chemicals and materials and you experience any sign of obvious wear and tear that could lead to leakage, you should change your work boots immediately to avoid any injuries or health issues.

5. Discomfort

Most quality boots come with a removable footbed, which is designed to be washable, breathable, and replaceable when necessary. Premium footbeds will provide arch support and cushioning so if your boots become less comfortable than normal, start by

checking the condition of the footbed and replace if necessary. If a boot is causing your feet serious discomfort, then it’s not worth risking more serious damage and it’s best to replace them, as it’s important the boot does its job so you can do yours.

“To get the best out of your boots and prolong their life, cleaning your boots thoroughly following the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain the health of the boots and avoid deterioration and damage is important. Ensure when you buy your work boots that they are the right boot for your job and if possible, purchase two pairs so you can alternate and allow any moisture to dry out before wearing,” says Blandford.

The JCB 48Z-1 Built for Tough Conditions and Hard Work

It is one of the strongest and highest performing mini excavators JCB has built. It’s highly productive, compact, agile, innovative and economical to own. It also includes exclusive safety features, along with being smooth to operate and easy to service.

“The true zero tail swing JCB 48Z-1 mini digger is incredibly manoeuvrable even in the most confined spaces because there’s no rear overhang outside the footprint of the tracks”, said JCB CEA Product Manager, Glenn McLeod.

“The efficient 2.2-litre Perkins 404D-22 engine delivers 35.7kW at 2000rpm powering the 48Z-1 and providing the optimum fuel efficiency.”

Tonne for tonne of material moved, the 48Z-1 is a leader in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Tracking performance is smooth and precise, ensuring high dozer capabilities and fast travel times. To increase productivity,

the auto kickdown motors automatically adapt to changes in terrain, increasing productivity and reducing operator fatigue.

The JCB 48Z-1 generates huge bucket tear-out forces of 38kN and dipper forces of up to 22kN. What’s more, by perfectly matching the boom and dipper, JCB has created optimal dig end geometry, helping you to work and load in confined areas with ease. Bucket rotation is a huge 181˚, offering great spoil retention during truck loading.

Smooth, precise and balanced multifunctioning is easy with this excavator, courtesy of a premium closed centre hydraulic system that provides improved flow sharing.

With class-leading greasing intervals of 500 hours, you can expect minimal downtime. While the cab monitor provides alerts on your excavator’s diagnostic status.

Engine revs reduce when the operator’s armrest is raised, improving fuel economy

and noise levels. “There’s also a one-touch idle feature that conserves fuel too, “said Glenn. Programmable auto idle can also be activated when the controls have been inactive for a period of time.

The 48Z-1 mini can control engine speed for different hydraulic flows by simply cycling through four different power bands: Light, Eco, Heavy and Heavy Plus. This means you can tailor performance to any application.

Load-sensing hydraulics are standard-fit on the 48Z-1. This innovative feature means that your hydraulics only consume power on demand, conserving fuel for when you need it most.

Fully ROPS and TOPS compliant, the 48Z-1 provides the ultimate protection to both cab and operator. For further safety JCB’s safety lever lock fully isolates this mini digger’s hydraulic functions to prevent unintended movement.

“Our unique 2GO system ensures your mini excavator hydraulics can only be operated

> Equipment and product reviews Mini Excavators 34 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU
The JCB 48Z-1 four tonne excavator has been developed to exceed even the most demanding of tasks.

in a safe lockable position via two separate inputs,” said Glenn.

“An overload screen displays a bar chart from green to red, indicating whether the overload point is close or exceeded. Once the limit is passed, the buzzer sounds and the bar flashes to warn the operator.”

A large track frame width and low centre of gravity helps the JCB 48Z-1 to offer amazing stability. This powerful small digger also offers amazing visibility, ensuring easier, safer trench digging and manoeuvring. This is thanks in part to a 70/30 front screen split. While the upper screen swings into an overhead storage position, the lower screen can be removed and stowed inside the cab.

All dig end and dozer greasing intervals on a JCB 48Z-1 mini digger are best-in-class at 500 hours, thanks to graphite impregnated bronze bushes; needless to say, this saves you time and money. JCB has packaged the bushed kingpost with these machines further reducing overall whole of life cost. An open frame undercarriage with sloping track legs also makes cleaning easier.

There are no plastic external body panels on the new JCB 48Z-1 small excavator; instead, this machine features 100% high strength pressed steel bodywork.

Colour-coded hydraulic hoses make for easy identification, while dozer hoses are simple to replace because they terminate at the bulkhead. The wide-opening steel bonnet and external fuel indicator make it easy to fill this mini excavator’s tank from ground level.

Remove two bolts to lift out your digger’s entire cab floor, giving you full access to the main control valve spools, hydraulic connections, and many other components for inspection or replacement.

The JCB 48Z-1 mini digger features an extremely spacious cab, with storage galore, a phone tray, stowage net and a cup holder. The whole area is accessed easily and safely via a large door.

The deluxe fully adjustable suspension seating provides great comfort for excavator operators and features independent adjustable positions for the ultimate in ergonomics. There’s a radio, 12V phone charger and powerful, efficient air conditioning system with 8 vents for added comfort during hot days in the cab.

Boasting an innovative rotary controller and easy touch switches that have been specially designed for easy operation, with ergonomic electro-hydraulic dozer control as standard, operators can achieve smooth and precise grading control.

You can alternate quickly between single/ hammer and double-acting auxiliary flow functions thanks to a convenient switch in the cab.

You can easily adjust and programme flow settings for specific attachments, with a built in memory to store your settings so that they can be easily retrieved between jobs. Information such as service and machine diagnostics help the operator to keep on top of the status of the machine. Alerts and service interval countdowns will keep you up to date, and always one step ahead of the possibility of downtime.

The JCB 48Z-1 really is the ultimate mini excavator if you are looking for a strong and reliable machine that offers safety and ease of operation as standard.

Power and performance with low operating costs

CAT® 304 and 305 CR Mini Hydraulic Excavators

The much-anticipated arrival of the new 4-tonne, Cat® 304, and 5-tonne, Cat 305 CR, Next Generation Mini Hydraulic Excavators are arriving to Australian shores. This completes Caterpillar’s Next Generation line-up of their mini-excavators, now offering 15 separate models starting from the Cat 301.5 at 1.7-tonnes up to the Cat 310 at 10-tonnes.

The new Cat® 304 and 305 CR delivers more power to the pumps, higher bucket breakout forces and deeper standard digging depths to increase performance by up to 20% over their previous E2 series models. Their industry-leading grease intervals and extended filter service life, combined with common components throughout the line-up together with flat, easy-to-replace side panels that promise to deliver up to 10% lower owner and operating costs.

The new 304 and 305 CR models are the final machines to be released with a complete new design from the ground up to the Cat next generation mini hydraulic excavator line concept. From the 1.5- to 10-tonne class models, all 15 Cat mini hydraulic excavators in the range offer common features and consistent control layouts to simplify training and operator adaptation.

New 304 increases stability

Built with a new reduced radius design, the 304 features a 1700mm track width, 254mm slimmer than the 304 E2, for more versatility and access to confined spaces. While narrower, the new 304 design also increases performance, balance and stability of the 4-tonne class model. Caterpillar have achieved this by moving from a compact to reduced radius counterweight that allows for greater stability, both in 360-degree operation and when travelling with loads, while its extra counterweight option takes the model to an even higher level of stability.

Compact performance of the 305 CR

The new engine on the 5-tonne class Cat 305 CR Excavator delivers nearly 9% greater power to increase machine performance.

> Equipment and product reviews Mini Excavators 36 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU

Hydraulic system improvements provide higher breakout forces – 49.2 kN, bucket, 28.3 kN with standard stick and 25.2 kN with long stick – to improve digging efficiency in hard rock applications. It also offers 140mm deeper dig depths than the 305 E2, giving it more application flexibility. Its compact radius swing reduces overhang when working to the side, while its 1980mm (78-in) track width and new extra counterweight option help to optimise stability and lift performance in confined spaces.

Advanced efficiency

Both excavator models now offer an angle dozer blade option to optimise machine flexibility in backfilling and finish grading applications. In addition to offering ample above- and below-grade travel with standard float function for easy clean-up, the angle blade moves 45 degrees left or right of centre. Increasing efficiencies and reducing operator interaction with final grading, angle blade movement is controlled by the right-hand joystick, while the left joystick handles machine drive by using stick steer control.

Tailoring machine weight to job requirements, interchangeable counterweight packages offer the balance between low ground pressure and lifting performance. Their industry-exclusive Cat Stick Steer System simplifies machine control by allowing the operator to switch from conventional lever/foot-pedal steering controls to low-effort joystick operation.

Two travel speed ranges and standard cruise control facilitate moving around the jobsite with minimum operator interaction. Meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emission standards, the turbocharged Cat C1.7 Turbo engine delivers higher power than the previous C2.4 engine. Standard auto idle, auto engine shutdown and efficient load-sensing hydraulics with variable displacement pump help to lower fuel usage at the site for more affordable operation. High mainrelief pressures, coupled with flow rates, generates the hydraulic capacity for high digging and lifting forces and more efficient use of a range of attachments. Complete with quick-disconnect lines, the standard auxiliary system provides the choice of one-way, two-way or continuous flow.

Valley Views Civil welcome their first Hitachi machine to tackle projects in the Illawarra region

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia Pty Ltd (HCA) is renowned for providing a specialist range of reliable solutions equipment to the Australian construction and mining industries. With a national wholly owned branch network, HCA’s after-sales support is only a phone call away. In New South Wales alone, there are five centralised HCA branches across the state, three HCA sub dealerships all backed by the 24/7 customer support centre. You can’t go wrong teaming up with HCA as a provider of construction equipment.

This is particularly true with the first addition of Hitachi machinery to the Illawarra regions most upcoming civil and earthmoving company, Valley Views Civil (VV Civil). A privately owned business based in Wollongong, New South Wales; VV Civil reached out to HCA’s sub-dealer ‘Illawarra Attachments & Machinery (IAM)’ as a like-minded provider offering reliable and cost-effective earthmoving solutions to cater to the diverse needs of the civil and earthmoving industry.

Since VV Civil formed in February 2021, owner Kyle Caunt has typically operated with other earthmoving brands until Ray at IAM suggested the Hitachi brand, “He was able to provide me with on-the-spot pricing for a new Hitachi mini excavator ZX17U-5

and there was no fuss from the agreed date of arrival. The service has been impeccable since the day I signed for it,” said Kyle.

“Ray pinpointed my needs from the beginning and ensured the machine was built to my preferred specifications, purpose fit for the projects I have upcoming. I’ve been purchasing attachments from Ray for years, so I respect his industry knowledge and advice on machines that are quality manufactured and reliable,” said Kyle.

VV Civil are among some of the first customers to take advantage of Hitachi’s ambition to grow their national network through a sub-dealership model with like-minded equipment providers across Australia.

> Equipment and product reviews Mini Excavators 38 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU

HCA’s

Since taking delivery of the ZX17, the compact mini has been sent to work on a large retaining wall project in Kembla Grange, and with another Hitachi machine on order, a mini excavator ZX85USB-5 with a pad crawler scheduled to work on 13 duplex cuts in August, VV Civil show no signs of slowing down.

More recently, Kyle says they’re considering a mid-size excavator ZX135 for a large commercial project in Jervis Bay scheduled for later in the year.

Growing his fleet and his team, Kyle has been moving at the speed of light to become the South Coast’s newest provider of haulage, excavation and machine float to tackle the housing development boom, residential retaining walls and the new build market. Also specialising in the transport industry, VV Civil own a fleet of trucks in their haulage division expanding their capabilities beyond the civil capacity, enhancing their service offerings to clients whilst maintaining a competitive edge.

Since the acquisition of the new mini excavator, the team at VV Civil are most impressed by “the code system, it provides extra security for those jobs where the machine stays overnight, giving the team peace of mind,” says Kyle.

He also credits the “quick hitch system and the recommended bucket size seems to be larger than competitors making it more productive overall”.

The excavators range from 1.7 tonne to 8.5 tonne with just about every attachment available. The applications of the excavators are diverse and vary between

electricians, plumbers, landscapers and builders alike.

With an expanding fleet of reliable equipment along with customised tailored service, VV Civil’s growth in the civil and earthmoving industry is set for a vast and continuous increase. HCA and its sub dealer IAM wish VV Civil the very best with their future endeavours and look forward to working together as the company continues their expansion.

Kobelco is the only option for Luxscape Contracting

While a break in the persistent Sydney rain permitted, Luxscape Contracting owner, Sean Doherty and his team were out on site in Roselands, busy preparing for a new driveway to be laid. We met up with the guys to see how their Kobelco mini excavator was measuring up to the task at hand and how they came to purchase the new machine.

After an accident on a Sydney motorway that saw his old faithful written off, there was only one choice as a replacement excavator for Sean.

“I went out and bought a brand-new Kobelco SK35SR-6, the exact same model as the one that had been written off. I didn’t want anything else but that machine, so I had to go out and buy a new one to replace it,” says Sean.

Started in 2019, Luxscape has come a long way in a couple of short years. Now with a team and fleet of trucks behind him, the company will take any job that comes their way up and down the coast of NSW.

“We work mainly in concreting, digging out driveways, bulk excavations, that sort of thing, but really anything outside that we can do, we will do. Wherever the work is needed we will go, as long as we have the gear to do it,” commented Sean.

40 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Equipment and product reviews Mini Excavators

Prior to Luxscape, Sean had been working for the same company for over 10 years, where he went straight from high school and into learning the landscaping trade.

“I started out doing some holiday and weekend work and then got offered an apprenticeship. I had no intentions to leave school, but the opportunity just fell into my lap, which I couldn’t say no to, and I haven’t looked back,” Sean reminisces.

“After a decade in the same company, I decided to have a crack at going out on my own. I had always wanted to, to see if I

could do it, and it seems to be going pretty good at the moment.”

Sean’s fondness of Kobelco started at his previous company, where he had a chance to sit in a variety of machines.

“I’ve been operating excavators for many years and 100%, hands down, the best machines I have ever operated are Kobelco, and those I talk to in the industry tend to agree. Compared to other machines, the smooth operability, and the power behind the Kobelco is just far superior. The size of the SK35SR is also perfect for what I do, it’s

not too big and not too small, it’s just right. I’ve used smaller machines to do the same job and it just takes too long and I’ve used bigger machines, but on some of the more space limited sites, they just don’t work,” says Sean.

“The fuel efficiency of Kobelco machines is really good as well, I find I only have to fill up every couple of days, and with fuel prices as they are, any saving is good.”

Kobelco excavators are backed by an expert network of independently owned and operated dealers, offering exceptional customer sales and aftermarket support, which Sean has appreciated when making his purchase.

“We haven’t had any issues with our machine, it’s been pretty smooth sailing. We did have one hiccup with the quick hitch, but we got it back working quickly. We have had our first service, and it was an easy experience with our local dealer, Sydney Trucks and Machinery. Our sales guy, Christian, has also taken good care of us and we look forward to dealing with him again in the future. Actually, we may be in touch sooner than later about an SK008, for that more detailed work,” Sean adds.

A strong advocate for the Kobelco brand, Sean had this advice to give to anyone on the hunt for their next excavator.

“Even if it does cost you a bit more money than another machine, it is totally worth it. I know of several people who have purchased from another brand and they had instant regrets after sitting in my Kobelco. I’d be happy to recommend Kobelco to anyone.”

Huski mini excavator adds spark to thriving electrical business

A fast-growing electrical contracting business based in the Hills District of Dural, New South Wales, MD Industries, has added a new M-16U Huski Construction Equipment mini excavator to its fleet – based on the impressive performance of its longstanding Toyota 5SDK5 Huski skid steer loader.

MD Industries director and project manager, Matt De Bono, started his electrical trade 20 years ago and self-started his current business, which he describes as “multidisciplinary”, 15 years ago.

“We are mainly electrical contractors but we cover a lot of fields and also do project work, providing entire customer solutions such as demolition, fit-outs, a whole range of works,” said Mr De Bono. “Because we cover so many areas, we can wrap it up as a package: do all the excavations, trenching, footings, the civil works, concreting, and of course the electrical side of things. We also provide 24-hour everyday quick response.

“At the moment we’re focused on building a network of electric car-charging stations throughout New South Wales. When it’s complete, and it’s due for completion by June 2021, you’ll be able to find one every 150km, all the way to the state borders.”

Given the regional nature of the network, MD Industries faced logistical challenges in terms of transporting a 2.5 tonne excavator to job sites, as Mr De Bono explained: “We go to some pretty far-flung places and it was just too big, heavy and expensive for towing. We were hiring excavators in rural areas but the further we went, it was getting harder and harder to find machines. We were travelling an hour just to get a machine and then an hour back.”

The business needed something lighter and smaller, yet still powerful.

As a long-time satisfied Toyota Huski skid steer loader user, Mr De Bono said his experiences with the 5SDK5 influenced his decision to buy the M-16U Huski mini excavator.

“When we started out, we didn’t have a skid steer loader. But as the business grew, we realised we needed those wide-ranging capabilities that the Huski 5SDK5 provides.

“It has helped us perform duties more efficiently. The Huski skid steer loader definitely makes life a lot easier for us and it’s fair to say that it has helped our business grow.

“Likewise, our business growth and the size of our recent electric car-charging station commitments really spurred the decision to get our new Huski mini excavator, making it quicker and easier to finish our projects.”

A key feature of the M-16U Huski mini excavator is its exceptional power. Mr De Bono considered buying the smallest mini excavator in the Huski range but liaison with Huski Construction Equipment area sales manager – Construction, Peter Bower, revealed the business could choose a highertonnage machine without compromising its transport requirements.

“We needed a smaller machine but one that could also meet our needs in terms of power.

“We looked at the smallest one in the range but after speaking with Peter we realised we could go up in size in order to allow for it doing that bit more, without it affecting our transport.

“The new 1.6 tonne Huski is in a different class to our larger machine but for the size of it, it is very powerful and more so than the 1.6-tonne equivalent from another brand. It performs very well, having excellent break-out force for its size.”

MD Industries also favours Toyota passenger vehicles. Mr De Bono said Toyota reliability is a continuing reason for it to choose the brand. “We also have a HiLux ute that has proven very reliable,” he said. “With the lower weight and compact

size of the Huski mini excavator, we can use the HiLux to tow the new Huski digger on a trailer, so that lets us get around without having to worry about trucks.”

Mr De Bono optioned the M-16U Huski mini excavator with a quick hitch for attachments, which he said, “Is handy”, adding that “the zero tail-swing is also a nice feature”.

MD Industries hasn’t had its new Huski mini excavator for long, yet first impressions are positive. “The Huski mini excavator definitely feels smooth to operate,” said Mr De Bono. “And it’s going to give us access to tighter sites because of the smaller size.

“As we expand, we will definitely be adding more Huski and Toyota equipment to our fleet – most likely a forklift. We use the Huski skid steer loader like a forklift but obviously it doesn’t have the same full functionality.”

He said dealing with Toyota Material Handling Australia service technicians and sales managers has been another reason to stick with the brand. “Our relationship with TMHA has been excellent and is a part of the reason we went with the Huski mini excavator as opposed to other brands.

“The major factor, though, was the performance of our Huski skid steer loader. It made the decision simple.”

Kelly Burton puts the XU20 to the test

To put the XU20 through its paces we enlisted the help of talented landscaper Kelly Burton from KBL Landscapes. Kelly regularly works with his team on high profile residential and commercial jobs in and around the Greater Sydney region. Often working up and down the NSW coast for a range of clients.

Chatting with Kelly about his experience and feedback on the XU20 he shared, “This is the type of machine that is going to suit a wide range of operator needs, from landscapers like myself to a wide range of

tradies looking to reduce manual labour and save time on construction sites. I can even see this machine being perfect for farmers or hobby farmers needing machines that can run with attachments like augers, rippers and various sized buckets making it perfect

for pits, fencing and trenches. I loved the smoothness of the machine, even for me jumping onto the machine for the first time today it was easy to operate with plenty of power. Features that all operators will enjoy and appreciate.”

48 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive

Kelly continued, “This really is a great little machine. It’s got plenty of power for its size, and it’s stable and solid. We did only have the small bucket today for our testing so we were a little bit limited in what we could do, but I can see plumbers and other tradies really loving this machine. If I took this machine home today, I’d be using it every day for loading out, back blading,

setting profiles on jobs, cut outs etc. I could see the XU20 being a valuable addition to many outfits. People often make the mistake of thinking machines like this one don’t perform up to the same levels of the bigger name brands, but this XU20 has gone above and beyond my expectations. I think it would more than mix it up well with other top brands of this size.”

The wrap-up

The versatility of the XU20 makes this a great allrounder. The reduced track width is only 990, which extends out to 1245. This will make it popular in tight spaces where larger machines won’t be able to access. The Kubota D902 engine and hydraulic system combine to produce plenty of power and pressure to run a wide range of attachments that operators will love. With a maximum digging depth of 2290 and maximum digging height of 2415, this mini excavator has the spec’s to make it perfect for a wide range of tasks and operators. LC

Floating Gabions The New Way to Green in 2022

Mark Paul, multi award winning horticulturist and founder of The Greenwall Company is predicting that floating gabions in residential, commercial and community spaces will be the new greening trend of 2022.

50 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Innovative products

With the right plant selection, soilless media, and the use of 97 per cent recycled materials for the base, they are a great low maintenance solution for stripping nutrient loads from ponds and lakes to add greenspace that is adaptable and easily moved from season to season.

Mark Paul created his first pond gabion back in 2011 for the pond in his family home, which just recently won the Australian Institute of Horticulture’s Residential

Greenspace award. Since then, he has adapted and tested different soilless media to ensure they are lightweight and easily moveable and introduced new materials and design templates to enable commercial use for larger scale projects. Adding another element to the small ecological systems tailored to the built environment.

“Our gabions are not just a one-size fits all solution as no two spaces are the same, especially when it comes to planting factors such as light, wind and aspect. We are also able to create unique shapes and sizes to ensure the perfect fit for all locations,” said Mark.

Key facts about The Greenwall Company’s Floating Gabions:

• All bespoke in design and plant pallet.

• Lightweight and easily moveable. Easy to cut back root and foliage mass 4-5 times yearly to strip and recycle nutrient loads.

• No traditional soil used, patented soilless media made of 97 per cent recycled materials only.

• Minimal maintenance due to media used and plant selection.

“Floating gabions are a great way to add amenity to wet areas at an affordable cost, with a great outcome. Adding greenery to ponds and lakes not only further enhances the natural beauty of the environment, but also the health benefits of getting out and about or relaxing in the garden,” adds Mark.

Over the past 35 years Mark has tested, designed, redesigned, and mastered his greenwalls to ensure they will last the lifetime of the building on which they are installed, further reducing waste.

The Greenwall Company has now installed their green infrastructure systems in over 2000 projects and will continue to work towards their goal of reclaiming the built environment with an increasing number of complex ecological systems involving walls / roofs / ponds / nutrient stripping / recycling / biodiversity and planned water management.

The Great(er) Outdoors

They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but with Australia’s beautiful weather and outdoor lifestyle, an outdoor room might just be the space that really captures the heart.

This area that bridges the divide between interior and exterior can be an alfresco with a barbecue or pizza oven one moment and transform into a relaxation destination the next. With shrinking block sizes, the trend for outdoor rooms is a modern solution for modern homes.

With so many opportunities to enjoy an outdoor room, it’s important to consider how multiple functions can work together in one cohesive style says architect and James Hardie Ambassador, Joe Snell:

“Traditional design often dictated that we use a garden to present the home like a trophy, surrounding it and emphasising the outside from the interior. Conversely, popular Modern design embraces open plan living that bridges the divide between the surrounds and the home, creating a more outdoor lifestyle by creating an extended, cohesive space.”

Here, Joe sets out some important considerations for making, not just an outdoor room, but a destination that will feel like an escape in your home:

Start with the look

To achieve a Modern outdoor space, it’s important to understand the look of your home, a controlled Zen garden will fit perfectly with the minimalist elements of a Scandi Barn Look or Box Modern Look home due to the focus on encouraging the occupant to be mindful and look within. Alternatively, a natural style planting would be better suited to a Mid-Century modern aesthetic as the movement was built on embracing and connecting to nature. A Modern Coastal Look encourages native coastal plants, possibly with a hammock between some native palms. Meanwhile, using more bold, man-made architectural features would tie into a Mixed Cladding Look where vertical and horizontal lines are interrupted with organic shapes. It’s also important to consider the history of your look, a Modern Scandinavian

barn usually won’t suit a tropical garden for example.

Once you know the style of your home, begin to incorporate this look into your exterior beginning with the façade, for example, Linea Weatherboards create a relaxed vibe with a simple shadow line that adds texture that’s reminiscent of beach huts and Hamptons homes, making it a perfect backdrop to a Modern Coastal garden.

Create continuity

By creating continuity across your interior and exterior, blur the lines between the two spaces, making the transition less jarring. To do this it’s important to have one idea or visual story that is brought together with consistent motifs and colour choices.

An easy way to create consistency is through materials that appear to be the same. Painted vertical joint timber internal walls are popular. James Hardie’s exterior Axon Cladding works well as it provides a similar vertical joint look on the inside and can continue through to the outside.

56 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Innovative products
Architect Joe Snell gives his advice on creating the perfect modern garden and outdoor room.

The result is a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors. Despite having the look of crafted timber, the Premium Fibre Cement is resistant to flaking, warping or swelling and damage from moisture.

Less is more

All modern home trends share common themes that need to be adhered to in the garden to create a cohesive and continuous design story. Chief among these is the focus on form and materials over finery and ornamentation.

Every aspect of your garden should be planned with a purpose. If it’s not necessary to the core theme of the home, take it out. This is especially true of pools, which often end up working against the design of the space than forming part of it. Don’t just stick your pool in the middle of your garden taking up valuable backyard cricket space. Instead bring it closer to the house if not into it! Remember pools are much more than just for swimming, they are an important landscape design element. A good guideline here is to align the shape and dimensions of the pool to that of the all or part of the building to create a balance of form.

Know your zones

As with the interior, you need to know your space. If you’re building a new property visit the site throughout the day and take note of the prevailing winds and where there are

opportunities for shade. Take a look at the views you want to capture and note the lay of the land.

With this information in mind, think about the life you want to create and lay out your exterior space to facilitate that vision. You may decide to put up a screen to shield against an afternoon southerly, or put a children’s sand pit under a tree that provides shade during the middle of the day.

Decking can be a great way to differentiate areas. Use it to create an alfresco or pergola area that ties to your internal flooring or rear façade. HardieDeck works well here and is particularly well suited to areas around

pools in place of timber as it is resistant to damage from moisture.

No matter your modern home style, it’s important to enjoy your space by creating it with your life and style in mind. By keeping these two basic tenants at the fore you will be able to define your look, continue it into your outdoor room, take out what’s not needed and create areas that suit the way you want to live.

Reduce Emissions. Not Performance.

EcoTeq

Electric

Commercial Zero Turn Mowers

Dispelling the myth of green compromise, EcoTeq is proudly turning heads and changing entrenched attitudes with their range of robust electric commercial zero turn mowers.

Manufactured by Mean Green in the US on the back of more than a decade of research and development, EcoTeq’s range deliver maximum power coupled with low noise, low vibration, low maintenance and zero emissions.

Encased in a corrosion-resistant lightweight aircraft alloy, EcoTeq mowers are purpose-built from the ground up. But it’s not just the sleek design that’s turning heads. Electric motors convert electricity to motion three times more efficiently than internal-combustion engines, delivering increased torque and longer run-times. At 20-30 per cent lighter than traditional equivalents, EcoTeq’s electric mowers require less power to move, delivering faster speeds of up to 18.5km per hour, and the battery life to power you

through a full day’s work. All on a single over-night battery charge.

More advantageous still to landscapers and property maintenance contractors is the significant reduction in running costs.

Transitioning to electric reduces the costs of maintenance by approximately 70 per cent, and the cost of fuel by 90 per cent. With rising fuel prices, this is only set to increase.

A world leading battery powered zero-turn riding mower

It is the weekend. You are in the driver’s seat. You are flying through the yard, gliding through grass like butter. You lean into the corners, handling them with ease. You feel the wind and sun against your skin. You breathe in that fresh, cool morning air. You are in the EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower and you are loving every second of it.

Ultimate power. Zero emissions.

EGO Power Plus is the most awarded cordless platform on the market. If you are familiar, you will know just how great battery power can be. If you are new to the platform, well, you will never look at petrol the same way again. The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower is the future of lawn care. Now it is finally available in Australia.

Behind every great EGO is patented 56V ARC Lithium™ technology. It is the industries most advanced battery platform, with shock resistant design and intelligent power management and cooling, delivering unmatched power and performance. These

are not the batteries you bang out of your TV remote when they stop working. These super cells are the future.

The Z6 comes with four of them, totalling to 40.0Ah. That’s enough power to cut up to 2 acres of lawn on a single charge. You read that right. Your Z6 will not suddenly flash red, switch off and leave you stranded. It packs all the power of petrol, without the noise, fuss or fumes. When the batteries do run low, you will get a notification on your dashboard, directing you to the power bay in your garage. Smart, isn’t it?

While on the topic, the Z6 can recharge 40.0Ah in two hours. You know the dreadful

feeling of waking up on a sunny Sunday and realising your tools have no charge. It is not a problem here. Just plug your Z6 into your wall mounted charger, have a coffee, then get stuck into the yard.

66 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Equipment and product reviews Mowing Equipment

Game changing features

The Z6 can tackle pretty much anything with four 10.0Ah batteries, but it can hold up to six. You may be asking yourself, ‘What happens when I add two more?’. EGO call it ‘Peak Power’ and it is the equivalent of turbo charging your Z6. With a maxed-out battery bay, the Z6 can produce 3360 watts. That puts the Z6 on par with a 22-horsepower engine.

It is no secret that EGO’s 56V ARC Lithium technology™ is one of the best in the industry. That’s why the batteries that power your Z6 are the same batteries that power every single EGO product. When you are done with the lawn, un-slot the batteries from your Z6, put them into your blower, trimmer or chainsaw, then get back to business.

Every backyard is unique, so you will be glad to hear the Z6 is customisable where it counts. It has adjustable blade speeds and cutting heights, as well as options for mulching, bagging and side discharge. It also has multiple driving modes: standard, control and sport.

Like all EGO products, ergonomics and comfort are front of mind in design. Which is great because you’ll be sitting in the Z6 a lot. It has an air ride suspension seat, which makes going over the uneven parts of your yard smooth sailing. Plus, there is a storage area with a USB port for your phone and two drink holders. Once you sit in a Z6, you might not want to get off.

What is in the box

The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Mower RRP is $8999. Out of the box, you will get the Z6 itself, mulching plug, four 10.0Ah batteries and a wall mounted charger. There is also a domestic five-year product and threeyear battery/charger warranty. Not that you will ever need it. If you are having second thoughts about your ride-on mower, register your interest in the Z6 today. You will never touch petrol again.

New Mower Introduces Telemetry and EFI

Inlon introduced the first commercial remote-controlled mower for slope mowing in 2006. Since then, the technology has developed, and new manufacturers have entered the market. The latest developments include telemetry systems to provide remote support and high performance EFI engines, both of which are offered on the new Agria 9600i mower.

In addition to the safety of removing the operator from the machine and its potential rollover hazard, remote-controlled mowers have proven to be the most productive method of maintaining slopes and mowing areas with limited access and height constraints (for example, solar farms).

Low impact footprint and hybrid drive

Introduced in 2019, the Agria 9600 is a tracked remote-controlled mower with unique innovations in its Low-Impact Track Mechanism and Hybrid Drive System. Other tracked mowers dig into the ground when turning, which is problematic when turning on slopes. The Agria Low-Impact Track Mechanism does not dig in or disturb the ground, reducing subsequent erosion and creating less ground pressure than a human foot.

The Hybrid Drive System is a conventional petrol engine driving a generator that provides the electrical power to control and drive the tracks and other functions. This Hybrid Drive System is seen as a stepping-stone to full plug-in commercial mowers of the future. The hybrid drive is at the heart of its lightweight design, requiring fewer components.

EFI engine

The latest model Agria 9600i has a Kawasaki EFI engine. Although it was introduced to meet ever-increasing emission standards in Europe and the USA, the EFI system brings a new level of engine performance that is ideal for slope mowing applications.

Testing has shown that the EFI engine provides a 30 per cent productivity improvement. That means reduced mowing time for the same area and vegetation level from the same rated engine horsepower. How is this possible? With a conventional mechanically-governed engine, when a heavier workload is encountered, the rpm drops to pull on more fuel to meet the increased load. Rpm loss means reduced blade speed and cutting performance. However, the EFI engine delivers the fuel and maximum power without rpm loss, maintaining blade and ground speed for maximum productivity.

Cloud Telemetry brings sophisticated machinery down to earth

The increasingly sophisticated engines and electrical and electronic systems on commercial mowers are perceived as a

challenge for the traditional small plant technician accustomed to carby engines, gearboxes and belts. However, this is where telemetry makes the difference.

The latest Agria 9600i has a comprehensive telemetry system that measures key parameters and events each second and transmits the data via the internet to a cloud service. Events such as high impact collisions, overheating, insufficient engine maintenance, deck belt slippage, operating speeds, workload, working angles, GPS location and system diagnostics are recorded each second, stored and transmitted to the cloud as mobile coverage allows.

Using this data, Inlon advises the technicians on the ground, which issues need to be addressed and servicing requirements. This technology enables centralised and expert know-how to be utilised effectively in remote locations and assists with faster resolution of issues.

Inlon is the national distributor of a range of remote-controlled commercial mowers under its Civiline brand.

Wright Stander ZK

COX partnered with Wright Manufacturing in 2020 introducing the smaller deck Stand ons into Australia and have enjoyed great success in the commercial space.

With the Stander B range most popular with contractors who need to access backyards and tight enclosed areas, it is time to introduce a new selection of larger units. This range is called the Stander ZK with deck sizes from 52”, 61” and 72”.

The ZK range includes Wright’s premiere model boasting 37hp EFI Vanguard engines with a 16cc dual pump and motor transmission system from Hydro Gear, allowing the machines to reach up to 20km/h. This machine has a fuel capacity of 55 litres with dual tanks either side of the console for better weight distribution, split steel pulleys to withstand commercial use and with a 7 gauge steal fabricated chassis and deck, this machine will be able to handle Australia’s rugged terrain.

One of the best points of these machines is their capabilities on hills; each Stander ZK has the transmission, engine and deck on one platform. This means when the deck is lowered to the desired cutting height the centre of gravity for the machine lowers allowing this machine to become incredibly stable on any type of hill. The 72” deck also has the option of fitting a dual wheel kit to add extra grip and stability.

A few people have questioned why stand rather than sit?

There is a combination of reasons including comfortability as each stand-on is fitted with a suspended standing platform allowing it to absorb any vibrations, impacts from rocks/debris and adjusts for any undulating ground. Standing also reduces any additional stress, discomfort and injuries on the user’s back, which are commonly associated with sitting down all day while operating a machine.

From a safety standpoint these machines are second to none because if you are ever in an uncomfortable situation, there is an easy bail out method by stepping off

the back. Visibility on the stand-on is also second to none because you have a full 360-degree visual enabling the user to spot stumps, rocks and any other obstacles.

Only recently launched in Australia, Stander ZKs have already been purchased by large mowing area contractors. Supported by Nationwide Dealer Servicing and Spare Parts program, you will receive the product and personal service you deserve.

Plus, they offer you a personal demonstration in order to see and trial the machine before you buy. LM

Take the hard work out of cutting

As trees in Australia prepare for the dormant period in winter, landscapers and professional gardeners know it is time to get busy cutting and pruning.

While some growth can be removed with smaller tools like pruning saws and secateurs, larger and more mature trees may need to be approached with a chainsaw. This is often revealed once the leaves of deciduous trees have fallen, revealing large amounts of dead wood and even the odd recently-deceased whole tree.

Thankfully, AEG has all the tools you need for the job – big or small – and they’re all cordless!

If you’ve got some serious wood to remove, you’ll appreciate the power of AEG’s 58V chainsaw models.

The 18” brushless model has a chain speed of 21m/sec to power through native hardwoods and softwoods. It has a tooled chain tensioning system with onboard tool storage and a transparent oil reservoir that automatically distributes bar and chain oil to prolong the life of the chain and the bar.

The manual chain brake provides a quick cut-off safety feature.

The chainsaw starts at the squeeze of the trigger, has petrol-like performance without any of the hassles associated with storing and pouring fuel, pull cords, spark plugs, exhaust fumes and excessive noise.

To deliver even longer running time without a drop off in power, a new 58V 8.0Ah ULTIMATE HD battery will be arriving soon. It’s been specially designed for tools that need maximum power and runtimes, like chainsaws and mowers.

The smaller, lightweight tool is ideal for cutting back overhead branches and getting into places a larger, heavier chainsaw can’t reach.

It has a chain speed of 10m/sec and has the same features as the larger chainsaws, with an added belt hook.

Other 18V tools that make pruning season easy are the dedicated Brushless Pruning Saw – the perfect in-between tool for when a chainsaw is overkill, but secateurs can’t cut it.

Its powerful brushless motor delivers 3,000spm and the variable speed trigger gives users greater control. It also has toolfree blade change, orbital on/off switch and a lock-out switch to guard against accidental start-up.

And at the smaller end of the range of pruning tools are the 18V FUSION Secateurs; 1-second cycle time, 30mm diameter cuts on green material and 25mm on dead wood. The lightweight unit has hardened steel blades that can be sharpened and replaced. Plus gets a max 4,000 cuts out of a fully charged 18V 4.0Ah FORCE battery.

Make this year’s pruning season the easiest yet with AEG outdoor power equipment.

AEG 18 Volt FUSION Secateurs

I know I have said this a few times before about yet another tool from AEG for the landscape industry, but they just keep coming. The latest product in the AEG landscape range is the 18 Volt FUSION Secateurs and I have been eager to give them a try.

The 18 Volt FUSION Brushless motor is powerful, resulting in a smooth stroke of the bypass blade that completes its cycle in only one second with just a slight squeeze on the trigger. I was very impressed at how effortlessly the FUSION secateurs cut through branches at its maximum rated diameter of 30mm and equally impressed at the neat clean cut achieved. A similar outcome was achieved cutting deadwood at its maximum rated capacity of 25mm.

Before I sold my landscape business we maintained a property with 150 roses, I would have loved to have this tool back then when doing the annual prune! The blades are hardened steel, they were extremely sharp as expected for a brand new tool out of the box, but it is worth noting that they can be removed for sharpening or replacement with tools supplied in the kit.

76 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH
Battery powered secateurs are a game changer for anyone doing large amounts of hand pruning because they make the task much easier as well as much faster.

An LED warning light on the top of the secateurs even lets the operator know when the blades need sharpening. The LED panel also indicates with a green light that the tool is on and ready to use, a red light flashing twice indicates overload or if the blades are jammed.

With all the cutting I attempted the only time I managed to get the red warning lights on was when I was attempting to cut material of greater size than AEG recommended.

This type of tool could inflict harm if not operated correctly or in the hands of minors, but AEG have incorporated some great safety features into the FUSION

secateurs. Firstly, to turn on the tool you must depress the trigger for three seconds, a beep sounds and the tool is ready for action. Additionally, if the trigger is not depressed for 30 seconds the secateurs will automatically turn off – both great safety features.

Before I received the FUSION secateurs I was concerned that although they were going to require less effort to operate than conventional secateurs, they might be cumbersome and heavy. This concern was quickly put to rest as I could not believe how light they were, only 0.98kg without the battery and with the 2.0Ah FORCE battery inserted they were

WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU 77
SPECIFICATIONS Voltage 18 Volt Cutting capacity 30mm (Greenwood), 25mm (Deadwood) Cycle time 1 second Weight 0.96kg (excluding battery)

still incredibly light and would be forgiving on the operator even after long periods of pruning. The only small negative compared to conventional secateurs is that they are a bit bulkier and harder to manoeuvre in tight situations. A handy built-in sight light that automatically illuminates when the trigger is depressed would help vision of the cutting area in low light situations.

I would have to say that anyone who does a lot of hand pruning should give these a go. They will save you valuable time and are much more forgiving on the operator as minimal effort is required

to operate compared to conventional secateurs. As always AEG offers an exceptional warranty for peace of mind with a six-year product warranty when registered online within 30 days of purchase. An additional bonus until June 30, 2022 is a free 18V 2.0Ah FORCE battery available via an online redemption adding to the appeal.

Shamir Australia Bercy 150 Safety Glasses

Reliable eye protection is like home/car insurance – you don’t realise how valuable it is until you really need it. But for a lot of people out there, uncomfortable clunky eyewear leads to end users just not wearing eyewear at all, leaving them exposed to potential eye damage. That’s where Shamir Australia’s Bercy range of medium impact safety glasses comes in. They look and feel like great-looking fashion-forward sunglasses, while offering unmatched protection with exceptional visual clarity and comfort for work and play!

For tradies and in particular landscapers, there’s no job too tough for the Bercy 150. Developed to withstand heavy impacts, making it perfect for landscaping, mowing, pruning, cutting and chopping, as well as after-hours lifestyle activities. The polarised and UV protected lens cuts through the water and glare beautifully, making the Bercy 150 great for fishing or checking out the surf in the morning before work, fishing or paddling. Apart from the impressive optics and protection, it’s the strong and highly flexible and durable frame that will set these glasses aside from the competition. There wouldn’t be many people around harder on their glasses than tradies and landscapers, with flying debris impacting the lenses or glasses being sat on when left on the seat in the work ute all being ways that I’ve broken glasses in the past.

80 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS AND IMAGES: JAMIE GRAY

FEATURES

The Bercy 150 is made to stand up to that exact type of punishment.

The stylish wrap-frame design provides wearers with excellent ocular coverage, unmatched protection, exceptional visual clarity and comfort. Ideal for those who want durability and longevity out of their eyewear.

Test 1. Fit and protection at work and play

To test these glasses it was simply a matter of getting stuck into garden maintenance and even cutting timber with the circular saw. The glasses excelled when testing using a mower, line trimmer and 18V secateurs. With each of these tools there is always the possibility of flying debris and the way the contoured shape of the Bercy 150 fit to the face offered optimum protection. The quality of the lens always provided amazing visibility and the wraparound style provided excellent peripheral eye protection.

The best thing is you can have your prescriptions put into these glasses if you choose, making them extremely versatile. The glasses themselves fit well up against your face when working, meaning the chance of having any debris fly up under the glasses is very low.

> Test drive

After ripping into some work it was time to test the Bercy glasses at play. While fishing, the polarised lens cut through the glare and water beautifully, and when ocean paddling they really excelled stopping all the glare and harsh light during the two hours on the water.

Test 2. Comfort and flexibility

Comfort and the flexible frame of these glasses are big features, which both contribute to why they are going to be so successful as safety glasses. As the glasses are so comfortable to wear I was leaving them on for considerably longer periods of time so when on the worksite it meant I was protected for longer. They just don’t feel like safety glasses; they’re unlike other versions I would take off as soon as I had completed a task, putting them down as they were uncomfortable or had average optics, which often led to situations where I might be tempted to perform a task without the glasses because I couldn’t find them. Instead with the Bercy 150 I just left them on for most of the day and they didn’t leave pressure points on my face or become uncomfortable..

The wrap-up

Whether it’s at work or at play, there is no job too tough for the Bercy 150 Safety Glasses. The high impact protection, comfort, exceptional optics and highly flexible and durable frame all contribute to make this a standout safety product. The glasses are a pleasure to wear and due to its design and quality materials used will stand up to the test of time for landscapers and tradies. LM

Quality starts from the roots

Growing trees that meet and surpass the recently revised AS2303:2018 Tree stock for landscape use was Tall Trees project.

Since 2015, Tall Trees have been seeing more councils and more street tree projects inspecting stock before supply or install. Often trees are rejected and rightly so for even the slightest amount of root girdling. Tall Trees made the decision to gradually move all of their street trees in production over to Rocket®pot Air Root Pruning (ARP) pots.

The design of Rocket®Pot’s guides the roots through pits in the pot’s inner wall, out through holes, in the side and base for air root pruning. This allows trees to grow and you can be confident will pass all council or arborist inspections.

To ensure Tall Trees are growing the best quality trees possible, they track their best practice method back to the initial seed germination. Their propagation stock is direct seeded into an S1020 which is a small ARP pot ensuring a healthy tap root. From there, for each potting-on stage the root balls are inspected, and any suspect roots are manually pruned. Then they are potted into the relevant sized ARP pot. So, at no stage during development are the trees grown in a rigid wall pot. This greatly mitigates the risk of root girdling, and improves the quality of the tree ready for installation into the ground. Paired with correct and careful installation practices, this growing method should ensure a quality tree with a healthy root structure well into its maturity.

With increased market competition and ever thinning margins, the last thing your

project needs is for trees requiring to be replaced after installation, or throughout a maintenance period, putting pressure on budgets. Tall Trees now grows all of its street trees using this method.

Tall Trees service the entire East Coast, and South Australia.

For more information on high quality, best practice grown trees, or any other green stock requirements including grasses, shrubs and exotics for your next project, please contact Tall Trees sales team at info@talltrees.com.au or (03) 5983 0166.

Concrete Sales

The better alternative for your concrete and now STEEL MESH supply needs.

Concrete Sales specialises in supplying premixed concrete and steel mesh to ‘the little guys’ in the building industry and has been successfully doing this since 2012. Due to the large volumes of concrete that Concrete Sales purchases from major suppliers as well as the smaller independents, they can unlock supply times that others simply cannot get. The days of needing to book a week in advance to get that elusive 7:30am time slot are over. Concrete Sales has your back and will get you the time you are after, GUARANTEED with only a few days’ notice. Even if you forget to order concrete, they can successfully meet your needs on the same day.

Even though Concrete Sales proudly boasts having the largest concrete supply

network in Australia, they are a small family business who really cares for their customers. They have created their own niche in the construction industry being the first choice for so many who don’t purchase concrete and steel mesh products regularly. With access to over 600 concrete plants across Australia, Concrete Sales has more coverage than anyone else.

Not only can you get your preferred concrete time, but their pricing is a lot more competitive than contacting suppliers direct. All the ringing around is done for you, they do all the hard work placing the orders, something that no one enjoys doing!

Experience the Concrete Sales difference yourself and you will see why more people are choosing them for their concrete and steel mesh supply.

With their industry experienced, customer focused staff and no waiting on hold for them to answer the phone, we can’t see a reason why Concrete Sales wouldn’t be your first choice for concrete and steel mesh products.

Egardens Online Plant Nursery

Primarily a retail online plant nursery selling landscaping plants, however Egardens also provide plant sourcing, which means that whatever plant variety you are after, Egardens do their best to find it for you in the size and quantities you require.

Whilst Egardens work largely with the general public, they also help landscapers and the like to source the plants that they require. It can be a very time-consuming process ringing around a mass of different suppliers trying to source what you need, so Egardens take all that hard work away from you and lets you focus on your core business.

Over many years in the industry, Egardens have a large network of excellent growers that they use to supply plants to their customers all over the East Coast of Australia from Queensland down to South Australia.

They are also happy to service other parts of Australia, however there can be limitations on what can be sourced elsewhere. Egardens however can freight interstate when required using specialised plant transporters that can safely transport plants from state to state.

Egardens can supply a wide range of plant sizes from small pots up to 400L as well as larger advanced trees. They also have the capacity to supply large quantities of plants from small to very large projects. If they cannot get the numbers required from one grower alone, then they can source from multiple growers in order to fulfil the requirement.

On a recent job Egardens sourced and supplied 300 Lavender plants in five different Lavender varieties from five different Sydney growers. They were able to arrange the freight to pick up from each supplier and deliver everything to the site address. From start to finish, Egardens managed and organised the entire process.

Egardens have access to 1000s of plant varieties. Not everything that Egardens are able to source and supply is listed on their website because there are just far too many varieties to list, so the most popular varieties are listed. As long as there are growers in Australia growing the variety you are after, Egardens are confident they are able to source it.

For more information visit www.egardens.com.au or call 0411 435 314.

MAKING A SPLASH SPLASH! EXPO

For landscapers, swimming pools can often be a hinderance that you have to work around. More recently, however, with construction on the rise, smart landscape contractors have been working in unison with pool builders to make the most of the boom. In 2022 there’s one place where landscapers can soak it all up and network with the very best in swimming pool royalty: SPLASH! Expo is set to open new doors and expand your business horizons.

Let’s face it, adding a pool to a project can cause all sort of problems; plans get changed, access gets tricky, plant options decrease, construction schedules clash, safety hazards pop up, clearing and maintenance turns critical, and the final aesthetic results relies on too many factors that can be out of your hands. But when you think about it, landscaping and swimming pools should go hand in hand. A pool and its surroundings should complement each other, and for this symbiotic relationship to

work best, those contracted to do the job need to have the same level of reciprocating rapport.

As Simon Cooper from Interpoint Events, who is relaunching SPLASH! Expo, rather eloquently put it: “I like to sum this up with the word ‘Poolscape’. When someone is redoing their backyard and putting in a pool, it is best for the pool installer and landscaper to work together. However, from past experience, people often dig a hole for the pool and then the landscaper has to

work around it. To deliver the best result it should be done in synergy.”

Simon Cooper has been championing the benefits of this cooperative approach for years, and has been organising Australia’s greatest swimming pool convention for even longer. He first started running SPLASH! Expo back in 2006, and by 2012 he had the event voted best overall trade show in Australia and New Zealand. It continued to grow from strength to strength as a biannual event until COVID hit in 2019.

88 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Eye on the industry
One of Patrick Redmond’s many beautiful photos of the 2021 SPASA National Pool of the Year, built by Liquid Blue Pools.

Having taken a short hiatus due to the pandemic, SPLASH! Expo is now back, bigger and better than ever. Of course, over the ‘downtime’, as with housing construction and home renovations in general, pool installation in Australia has risen exponentially. National development applications for pools were up a whopping 27 per cent in the past 12 months alone; remembering, each one of those pools usually needs landscaping expertise involved.

SPLASH! Expo is set to be the largest pool and spa trade show in the Southern Hemisphere. On Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd of June at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, there will be a sold-out, capacity showroom of over 150 exhibitors gathered under one roof showcasing the latest in pool innovations.

For landscapers, it’s not only a time to meet pool companies that you could possibly share trade and knowledge with, but there will also be a plethora of other interesting businesses that you can network and collaborate with. From tiling brands and shade cloth technology, to lighting and drainage systems, there is a wealth of products and people to encounter. With ever-changing legislation, pool fencing is another hot topic, and with free seminars and workshops there is lots to learn and arm yourself with for future projects.

At the same time, SPLASH! Expo is a great opportunity for landscape contractors to introduce themselves to and educate those at the forefront of the pool industry. This will also include other local and overseas prospects who will be attending the show as visitors.

“In 2018 we had international attendees from 27 countries, and given the show is much larger we are expecting even more this year,” explained Simon Cooper. “They are usually major pool distributors, delegates scouting commercial pools for hotels in Asia and people looking for new products.”

What an opportunity to either dip your toe or jump straight in the deep end and join forces with such a booming market. And to take the networking opportunities to another level, the show owners, SPASA (Swimming Pool & Spa Association), will be staging the inaugural SPLASH! afterparty as the show closes with live entertainment from the Baker Boys Band. Register online now to attend SPLASH! Expo, and don’t worry, you won’t need to splash out as most of the show is free! For full details go to splashexpo.com.au

Edging forever

When separating any two elements in the garden you cannot go past steel. Mild steel garden edging works well in all soils and will last for generations.

EverEdge flexible steel garden edging is perfectly suited to all landscaping projects whatever their size. Made from 1.6mm mild steel (90 per cent recycled) it is quick and simple to install – just hammered directly into the ground using the spikes that are part of the metre lengths. Each length very simply slots into the next – there are no extra pins, pegs or joiners. EverEdge will hold a perfect straight line and, being flexible, is also simply formed into virtually any curve or angle by hand – no special tools are needed.

EverEdge is also available in pre curved rings. Two pieces make a circle of 600mm diameter, and three pieces make a circle of 900mm diameter. The 900mm diameter curved pieces can also be expanded to make a 1200mm diameter circle (four pieces) or a 1500mm diameter circle (five pieces).

EverEdge garden rings can be used to make a circular edge around trees, statues, water features and garden beds. The rings prevent grass runners invading the area around a tree or shrub; they keep in mulch and provide protection from mowing damage and soil compaction around the roots. The lengths are simply joined together using the coach bolts provided, which are then inserted through the pre-drilled holes.

EverEdge is available in three different depths: 75mm, 100mm and 125mm in a galvanised and powder-coated finish in black or brown and in Cor-Ten. The 75mm depth is generally used to edge paths or driveways where no grass is involved, whilst the 100mm and 125mm depths are used for edging lawns and flower beds particularly where grass runners need to be controlled. When 30mm of the actual edge, as well as

the spikes, are hammered into the ground, EverEdge creates an effective barrier that will stop the runners invading paths or garden beds.

EverEdge is available Australia wide at local stockists or through the online shop. All details are on the website: www.everedge.com.au

Branding update for Kanga Loaders

Kanga Loaders invented the mini loader on the Gold Coast back in 1981 and during that time has undertaken several identity changes. The latest being a name change to “Kanga Loaders” back in the late 90s. The logo and machine branding had remained relatively unchanged since then.

“It was important to us that we embraced Kanga’s rich 40-year history and respected our heritage,” said Rod Lehpamer, Kanga General Manager. “We didn’t want the new logo to stray too far from the original design, which has served the brand so well over the years,” he continued.

With technology moving ahead so quickly, the modernised logo will better reflect the exciting future ahead for Kanga Loaders as they embrace the latest trends. In addition to the logo change, Kanga Loaders will be updating machine branding as well as upgrading all safety decals to ISO standard.

DeWalt’s new cleaning gadget saves water and time

From cleaning pathways, outdoor furniture and brick walls, pressure washers can help the weekend warrior tackle a number of outdoor jobs. According to DeWalt, the power tool experts, cleaning with the right pressure washer is 10 times faster, and 10 times more water efficient, than cleaning by hand.

DeWalt has recently launched their new E-Series Electric Pressure Washer that delivers superior cleaning performance with a robust and durable design. “The new design is user friendly, reduces water usage, and allows for easy transportation with its rugged wheels and a telescopic handle. It makes tasks such as washing your car, cleaning the outside of your house, washing down outdoor furniture, and maintaining courtyards, quick, easy and hassle free,” says Matthew Tojic, DeWalt Pressure Washers Category Manager, Mayo Hardware.

“We are seeing a shift to environmentally friendly options and homeowners are putting the ’green’ into having a green thumb, with an increased focus on saving water and helping the local environment,” says Tojic. “There is an increased interest in reducing water usage. Additionally, jobs such as cleaning your driveway or deck take an incredible amount of time by hand, up to

> Eye on the industry
Helping the weekend warrior tackle outdoor jobs.

half a day, whereas using a pressure washer will get the job done in about an hour.”

The DeWalt DXPW160WE comes with a pressure select dial, so the easy adjustment of pressure based on the desired cleaning application can be made. “Due to its versatility, pressure washers have become increasingly popular with homeowners. Some of the most common projects for cleaning around the outside of the home include washing mossy paths, removing

mould off walls, and everyday dirt, dust and weather sediments from outdoor areas. It can also be used on fences and house exteriors for paint preparation, as well as washing the car, caravan or bike,” adds Tojic.

The DeWalt Electric pressure washer comes complete with an 8-metre hose and three cleaning nozzles including a turbo nozzle, variable pressure nozzle and a water saving nozzle, as well as a foam sprayer for easy application of cleaning

agents. The built-in hose storage reel and nozzle storage makes packing up easy. The weekend warrior now has the help of 2320 Rated PSI cleaning power to tackle the toughest jobs with a 2500-watt high performance motor.

Sharing his top tips, Tojic says, “When cleaning fences and walls, start at the top and work down horizontally – spray into the sides of posts as they meet the fencing to avoid splashback. If it’s a driveway, start at the top so the water runs away from where you are cleaning.

If you have a large space to clean, it’s best to just point further away as it reduces pressure the further it shoots but also increases the width of spray to allow you to work faster when less pressure is required. It is much faster than cleaning by hand and being lightweight, it is easy to move around.”

Rather than labouring through the chores, a switch to a pressure washer is a great way for homeowners to do their bit for being water wise and environmentally friendly while reclaiming their weekend.

The DeWalt DXPW160WE 2320PSI, 8.5L Electric Pressure Washer is available from Bunnings Warehouse and is RRP $399.00.

2022: Another great National Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo

Despite Sydney’s drenching rain that preceded the event, the 2022 Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo was another huge success, with 71,300 people visiting the Expo over its three days.

Proving itself last year as an excellent venue, the Sydney Dragway more than lived up to expectations again this year, with easy navigation to find exhibitors and plenty of parking to accommodate the huge crowds.

Representatives of local councils braved the wet and wild weather to attend the International Greenkeepers local government educational seminar on the Thursday, prior to the Expo opening. The seminar hosted 118 council delegates.

Cutting the ribbon at the opening were the Mayor of Blacktown, Councillor Tony Bleasdale, Chris Moroz of gold sponsor Komatsu and Andrew Hobbs of gold media sponsor Earthmovers & Excavators.

Best stand awards

Once again, exhibitors excelled in presenting their products, with WesTrac taking out the award for the best large stand and Digga being awarded the best medium stand. The best small stand award was taken by Manitou and the award for the best laneway booth went to GAAM Emergency Products. Komatsu took out the most innovative product award with its electric excavator.

Komatsu launch

Chris Moroz, Komatsu sales manager for New South Wales said, “The Expo is the launch platform for the latest in smart construction technology for our range of bulldozers and excavators. The benefit for operators is high efficiency and the ability to work exactly to the project construction design. Less fuel is consumed and less time is spent on the job.”

Greg Page from Tough Dog took the opportunity to show their range of suspension upgrades for four-wheel-drive vehicles.

“Our market is typically those people who would attend the Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo. Many people in the construction industry

drive off-road vehicles, both for work and play, so it makes good sense for us to be here,” said Greg.

Long-time expo exhibitor Norm Engineering showed new products including trenchers and augers.

General manager John Pesch explained, “These are designed for civil, agricultural and landscaping markets, or for anyone

98 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Eye on the industry

who needs to drill a hole or lay a trench. Their design includes a lot of proprietary technology that enables them to outperform many others.”

Roy Rossini, director and general manager for XCMG Mining Equipment Australia said they were an Expo sponsor because it is the largest construction industry expo in Australia and the event attracts a lot of people.

“We now have a dealer network throughout the country and are using Diesel Dirt & Turf to release our 8-tonne and 15 tonne excavators, together with our roller, which has been a huge success.”

Mark Micallef from West-Trans Equipment and HMF Cranes said Diesel Dirt & Turf was the ideal place to exhibit its new, low weight hook loaders that are designed to maximise the payload.

“We supply the waste and civil markets and these new products are designed to increase their productivity. We enable our customers to handle bigger weights and bigger payloads on the jobs,” said Mark.

Ever popular Pickles

Saturday

Hugh Rainger from Pickles Auctions said that the Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is one of their highlight events of the year.

“We have exhibited at Diesel Dirt & Turf from the first year and have created a great following through the event. Our Saturday auction comprised about 130 lots of equipment across a wide range of applications.

Michael Rojek from CreditOne Equipment finance joined the many enthusiastic exhibitors. “The Expo is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with our dealer partners and end-user customers.

“We are one of Australia’s largest privately owned finance brokers. Also being a financier means we have the flexibility to offer our customers some arrangements that the mainstream banks find difficult to provide,” Michael said.

Sydney sales manager of Prolube lubricants, James Taliana, was also enthusiastic about the response to their sponsorship of Diesel Dirt & Turf, commenting, “The Expo has given us the opportunity to highlight our agricultural and earthmoving industry products.”

Mark Bygrave from Marxgold Starting Solutions is another dedicated exhibitor at Diesel Dirt & Turf.

“The Expo was an ideal opportunity to release our new 12 and 24-volt heavy duty lithium jump-start system. It’s the first available in Australia and weighing just 8kg it can start anything including mining equipment, trucks and machinery,” Mark said.

NTI, together with its other operations Truck Assist and Yellow Cover said Diesel Dirt & Turf is a big part of their promotional activity.

Farah Lock said, “All our people are trades-based specialists who have been on the tools. We have very strong relationships with all the key companies in the construction and related industries.”

Albert Martin, Toro area sales manager of Semco Equipment sales said, “The Expo is

an unbeatable place to show our full range of equipment, which includes Toro mowers, and construction equipment such as mini diggers, trenchers and stump grinders. We are also showing the first of the Toro lithium powered equipment range, which has generated huge interest.”

Andrew Hobbs from Earthmovers & Excavators Magazine and Trade Earthmovers said it was great that they were gold media sponsor for the second year.

“There is no better way for us to connect with everyone in the industry – including the operators of the machines. As a news organisation, it is important for us to see what is happening in the market.”

Ryan Macdonald, one of the owners of Cappro Pacific said it was the first time at Diesel Dirt & Turf and considered their presence was important to connect with customers to grow the brand and the business.

Jamie Gray of Earthmoving Equipment Magazine said it was great to be part of the Expo which brought the industry together and enabled them to keep in touch with key decision-makers.

Contribution by sponsors

Expo Manager Marti Zivkovich said sponsors had a major impact on the Expo’s success and paid special tribute to gold sponsor Komatsu Australia, gold media sponsor Earthmovers & Excavators Magazine and Deals on Wheels, major supporter/ associate sponsor Pickles and associate sponsors Prolube, XCMG, CreditOne, Cappro Pacific, Norm Engineering, NTI/ Truck Assist, Yellow Cover and Earthmoving Equipment Magazine.

A trip here or a fall there could mean a claim is headed your way. Every business has an exposure to them, even home businesses. Here are few steps to minimise the impact it can have on your business.

Insure against costs

The reality is, slips and trips are common, and the consequences can be significant.

“There are two issues: there’s the compensation and the legal costs of defence and there can be a very large amount of money involved in both.”

Having an appropriate public liability insurance policy in place can help your business meet these costs.

Poor Workmanship of Concern to LIAWA

As a landscaper for almost 40 years, I’ve had my fair share of great jobs and not so great jobs. Whether we are dealing with residential or commercial projects, sadly this is part of running your own business.

Of course, with great jobs, we will always look fondly back on these and provided we have made profit, we celebrate with enthusiasm and are ready to tackle any job put in front of us with renewed hope we have cracked the market.

Poor jobs, where often the budget has blown out and the client and you are at logger heads to just get the job done, brings a totally different set of emotions often fraught with a feeling of disappointment and sometimes anger and of course the inevitable, ‘Why did I ever take this work on?’. More importantly, we often question our ability as a landscaper.

Here in WA, LIAWA is becoming more engaged with the public and has seen over the past few months an increase in complaints from them.

Of course, as an industry association it is critical that we are accountable and most importantly help where we can to either point a consumer in the right direction to resolve their issues with their contractor or support our members in how to tackle a dispute.

Running a landscape business is far more complex than most might think and with standards along with policies and procedures continuing to be on the rise, writing a simple quote on the back of a business card just will not cut it these days.

When it comes to disputes the overarching factor to why these occur is quite simply poor communication between the contractor and client.

The initial meet and consultation between both parties more often than not has a positive outcome with clients relieved to have found someone they can trust with their project and the landscaper excited by the prospect they have potentially got some nice cash flow around the corner.

Here are some tips to help reduce disputes and have positive outcomes.

Tip 1

The initial consultation is one of the most important parts of the whole project. It can make a project provided there is a clear understanding from both parties what the expectation is but similarly it can break a project when promises are not carried out.

Tip 2

Ensure the contract says it all. If you have not got a contract that has been properly looked over by a lawyer, you are setting yourself up for long term problems. Detailing the breakdown of the project might seem an overkill but when there is a dispute you can refer back to the agreement as to the terms you are working to.

Finally, a set of scale of drawings is again a helpful fall back when there is a dispute. Too many times I have heard of plants being installed that were not what a customer expected or a pathway not being as wide

as the client envisaged. Of course, it is essential your business must be insured to work on site as well.

All of this may seem like common sense, but clients are becoming more aware of contracts before they part with their cash, and it is therefore critical contractors clearly demonstrate they fully comprehend their obligation. A clear set of documents that outlines how you are going to deliver their project builds a very strong level of communication, rapport and trust with the client.

Furthermore, the WA’s State government agency, the Department of Mines Industry Regulation and Safety, are keen to work with LIAWA in encouraging its members to fully understand the rights of consumers and in particular the Home Builders Contract Act 1991 (Notice for the homeowner) and the guide for Building Complaint Resolution.

Too often or not a small operator often out grows his business very quickly as work comes in and larger projects are tabled. This is where the problem ultimately starts and LIAWA’s role is to help our members grow and understand that poor mismanagement particularly around contract and finance management can be a major flaw in a business very quickly.

The Landscape Show is back for 2022

When Megan Flower, CEO of Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers, first conceived The Landscape Show in 2018 she knew that there was a gap in the Australian market for a trade-only expo for the landscaping industry. What she didn’t expect was that five years later, not only would the expo be bigger and better, but it remains the only event of its kind in Australia.

“The Landscape Show is truly unique in that sense. No other state association is running a similar event, and the fact that we focus exclusively on a trade audience makes it very different to publicfacing events such as the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, or the Victorian Pool and Spa Show,” Megan said.

Returning to Caulfield Racecourse, The Landscape Show will feature a lineup of exhibitors, demonstrations and activities catering to the needs of all landscaping professionals – from design and construction, through to maintenance, education, horticulture and more.

“The beauty of bringing everyone together under one roof is that it provides a platform to bring together ideas and innovation. Not

only can participants explore the latest products, services and technologies, but the Show doubles up as a rich networking opportunity where attendees can exchange business-building ideas, inspiration and insights,” Megan said.

Atendees at this free-ticket event can again see many of the industry’s favourite suppliers of machinery, irrigation

equipment, hand tools and power tools, engineered or custom designed outdoor fittings and fixtures, plants, trees and turf, and business software tools. Megan especially encourages those that are new to the landscaping sector to take advantage of the event to meet with peers, and forge new connections with suppliers.

“The industry is booming at the moment, and we are seeing extremely high levels of interest in landscaping across commercial, residential and civil infrastructure projects,” she said.

“The Landscape Show has a lot to offer the industry – even in the face of a COVID lockdown, last year’s event still attracted over 1000 attendees, and the vibe was incredible.

“Now that those restrictions are behind us, and the outlook for business is more optimistic, I’m looking forward to experiencing the positive energy that comes with having thousands of industry professionals from all over Australia come together in one place.”

The Landscape Show will be held from 10am- 3pm on Wednesday 22nd June at Caulfield Racecourse. Register online at www.thelandscapeshow.com.au for this free event.

Wiradjuri Garden: A Winning Combination

Dubbo, around 5 hours drive from Sydney, has grown to become one of NSW’s largest inland cities; nearly 40,000 people now call Dubbo home. As part of its drive towards providing excellent community facilities, together with a genuine desire to recognise and celebrate the area’s native landowners, Dubbo Council, in partnership with the NSW State Government, launched a project to build a new spectacular garden in the heart of the city.

As part of the Council’s Open Spaces agenda, the project was to be built in two stages, with the first stage laying the ground work for the second.

A history of inappropriate land-use practices in earlier years has left Dubbo with a range of land management issues, including salinity, soil degradation and contamination. To be able to reclaim the land for community parkland is a massive boost for Dubbo inhabitants. Council selected a 1.2-hectare piece of land on Coronation Street in the Elizabeth Park Precinct. The site needed considerable rehabilitation after massive over grazing and then further use as a construction staging. The site represented a blank canvas with nothing of any real worth to be retained.

Design and function

Wiradjuri Garden, as the park was named, honours the 40,000 years of national cultural heritage by the Wiradjuri Nation. Designed by Moir Landscape Architects, the extraordinary garden design uses three paths, representing the three main rivers in the district. The paths are used to roam the gardens but also to connect the many recreational facilities nearby. The usual picnic-type facilities are complemented by a number of indigenous features, such as a firepit and yarning circle, and the entire site showcases only vegetation native to Wiradjuri country.

Part way through the project, Council also introduced another gorgeous feature, a 50m long Rainbow Serpent, designed to enhance the parallel/natural play opportunities provided by the site.

A massive project for Dubbo Landscaping

The Landscaping tender for both hard and softscapes was won by TLA Member Dubbo Landscaping. These kinds of largescale, ground-breaking projects are not

very common in regional areas and the Dubbo Landscaping team were certainly taking on a project far larger than any they had undertaken before. Fortunately, the team rose to the challenge, producing stunning results with first-class finishes.

Dubbo Landscaping, founded by Behn Monley around nine years ago, has steadily grown to become one of the three largest landscaping businesses in the region. Offering a full range of services, Behn has created a business that is both of the region and for the region. Servicing both urban and rural clients, residential and commercial, Dubbo Landscaping offers design, installation, maintenance, machine hire and even custom stone engraving. They also have a complementary Landscape Supplies business.

But perhaps the most admirable quality of the business is its deep community roots. As a regional city, and with a proportionally large Aboriginal population of approximately 15 per cent, the area has

its fair share of employment and youthrelated issues. Behn’s approach to caring for his community is two-fold: to offer youth mentorship with opportunities for hands-on experience, and also to align with local Aboriginal employment agencies wherever possible. Behn’s mantra is, “If you look after your community, your community looks after you.” Behn is only too aware that Dubbo has a number of underprivileged and disaffected youths who have never had a chance to work or to gain skills and selfesteem. He chooses to work alongside notfor-profit organisations such as LeaderLife that aim to support children, young adults and families doing it tough to develop life skills, confidence and opportunities to transform their lives.

Practicing what he preaches, a large focus of Dubbo Landscaping’s tender for the Garden was to employ local Aboriginal labour as sub-contractors and to use Aboriginal suppliers for the materials wherever possible. They also

news

used a range of partnerships in the area for specialist parts of the project such as bulk earthmoving for land contouring, as well as expert irrigators and electricians. This regional community approach to the project has meant the benefits of the project have been distributed to a wider base of the landscaping industry in Dubbo.

Behn is the first to admit that taking on a project four times larger than their previous largest project was initially “terrifying”.

Taking six months to complete, employing around 40-50 landscapers and managing a range of supplier and sub-contracting relationships, Dubbo Landscaping actually thrived under the pressure. The scope of works included all aspects of hard and softscape elements, ranging from largescale land contouring and soil rejuvenation, through to hydroseeding, mulching and mass planting. A range of plant sizes were used, meandering paths were built and recreation facilities were created, with every aspect of the work executed to perfection.

Project significance

Wiradjuri garden is a true boon for the community providing a culturally rich celebration of our indigenous heritage. The Garden’s design and landscaping installation is a triumph, providing an accessible and connected environment that is both grand and graceful, with a restful ambience. It is also the ideal addition to the Elizabeth Park precinct where it resides, sitting alongside the Dubbo Botanic Garden that features a range of

garden spaces, including a new adventure playground composed of over 40 kids’ active-play equipment pieces.

Wiradjuri Garden is a place for passive recreation, meditation and relationship building. It has a stately poise and a sense of space, reflective of the native landscape and its First Nations people. Stage 1 of this project has already provided the broader community with an important and enticing, purpose-built space for storytelling and meeting. It is also a wonderful backdrop for the suggested elements of Stage 2 of the project, such as an amphitheatre, artworks

and further plantings. Plans are also underway for building a Wiradjuri cultural centre next-door and Wiradjuri Garden is an important part of the educational plans for the city.

The outcome

Reaction to the space has been overwhelmingly positive and is certainly a win for Dubbo and its surrounds. And the outcome for Dubbo Landscaping is also a huge win. In 2021, the company entered the TLA Landscape Excellence Awards for the first time, with Wiradjuri Garden winning both a Gold Medal and Best in Category for Commercial and Civil Construction, $750,000 to $1.5 Million.

Behn said, “Entering the Awards gave our staff a real kick, it was a huge morale booster for the whole team. When we won the category, we were thrilled. It has been a complete game-changer for us. It has solidified our position in the area and big projects are coming our way organically. Honestly, I’m pinching myself.”

Dubbo Landscaping plan to enter the Awards again in 2022 with a project on Little Timor Street. If you or your company would also like to enter this year’s awards visit The Landscape Association website at www.landscapeassociation.com.au. Entries are open now to TLA Members across all areas of the modern landscape sector. Congratulations to the whole team at Dubbo Landscaping and we wish you all the best again this year.
