Jeff Bezos is standing down from his Chief Executive role at Amazon in the third quarter of 2021. Why is this a big deal for Australia? Well, stay with me for a moment. The founder of Amazon – one of the Big Five companies in the US, bumping shoulders with Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook – is considered by many as one of the most influential economic and cultural forces in the world. When you look at the most valuable brands around, Saudi Aramco takes the top spot with a value of more than $2,458 billion USD with its oil, gas and refining portfolio, followed closely by Apple at $2,213 billion USD. Microsoft comes third place at $1,653 billion USD and finally Amazon takes out the fourth position with $1,596 billion. Jeff claims Amazon is what it is because of invention. He explained that a few years after a surprising invention, the new thing becomes normal, people yawn. That yawn, he contends, is the greatest compliment an inventor can receive. Based on the company’s latest financial report, Jeff reckons Amazon is at its most inventive ever which is convenient considering he is moving forward with his transition – ending his
CEO tenure on a high. For the full year 2020, Amazon’s net sales increased 38 per cent to $386.1 billion USD, compared with $280.5 billion USD in 2019. That’s massive. So, how is Amazon faring in Australia? The e-commerce juggernaut down under has cracked $1 billion in revenue just three years after launching in our country. The Covid-19 pandemic helped this business flourish with sales doubling in Australia in the space of a year. Despite the improved performance, it did report a net loss of $3.8 million. In addition to its online shopping activities, Amazon Australia is expanding its physical presence with new distribution centres and is forcing the hands of its competitors’ to lift their online shopping game. I wonder what Jeff will do next in the world of transport and logistics? Whatever you do, though, don’t let him see you stifle that yawn.

NHVR welcomes HHTS CEO appointment The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has welcomed the appointment of Naomi Frauenfelder to lead Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds (HHTS), a heavy vehicle industry mental health initiative. HHTS appointed its inaugural CEO in January. NHVR CEO, Sal Petroccitto, said that the appointment was an exciting step forward for the newly formed organisation. “On behalf of the NHVR I want to congratulate Ms Frauenfelder on her appointment into this key role for our industry,” said Petroccitto. “Ms Frauenfelder has significant experience in the mental health space in the rail industry that will stand her in good stead to lead HTTS. “Healthy drivers are safer drivers, and that includes mental health. The good news is that having a conversation about mental health is not as rare for drivers as it once was. “Increasingly, people are stepping up to have the conversations with their mates and in their workplaces and I believe that HTTS

Son of a gun NORTHERN VICTORIAN FAMILY BUSINESS, ELLIOTT’S EXCAVATIONS, HAS TAKEN DELIVERY OF A CUSTOM SPEC’D BULK TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT TIPPER COMBINATION TO BEST SERVE ITS BULK HAULAGE CUSTOMERS. A QUALITY BUILD, BACKED BY A COMPETITIVE SERVICE AND WARRANTY PACKAGE, WILL GO A LONG WAY TO REINFORCE THE TRANSPORT COMPANY’S BOTTOM LINE. Brendan Elliott, Business Manager of Elliott’s Excavations, has a proud family history in the road transport industry. “My grandfather started in transport in 1948 after he returned from WWII, carting Livestock and fuel,” Brendan says. “In the early 1970s my father started carting gravel and earthmoving around Gunbower, the Northern Victoria Region, and we carried on until present day operating out of the same site.” The business, Brendan says, has grown steadily over the years along with the ups and downs that reflect the local economy. “If dairying is good, business and farmers spend money, and if the government spends on infrastructure, we see increased work opportunities and growth locally,” he says. “However, water in Northern Victoria and southern Riverina – and the lack thereof – due to availability and price, is in some cases holding the community back.” Elliott’s Excavations has supported the civil construction sector in the region for more

When you’re on a good thing, stick to it – is a well-known adage that A&I Fabrications adheres to when it comes to the supply of all the hardware it uses to mount the ‘bling’ products to the trucks belonging to discerning clients. A&I Fabrications is a sister company to A&I Auto Electrics that was started nearly 31 years ago at Wetherill Park in Sydney’s western suburbs by Andrew Heathcote and his brother Ian who are both auto electricians by trade. The business was initially set up to supply the earthmoving and transport sectors in greater Sydney and beyond with a reliable and dependable auto electrical and airconditioning service. Today it includes a modern workshop and a number of mobile service trucks fully equipped for working in the field. Around 2004 the brothers saw an opportunity to expand into manufacturing

Steven Teofilo.
Teofilo, Head of Product Engineering & Platform with IVECO Trucks Australia, has admired trucks and transport equipment and been intrigued by the engineering effort that goes into making them operate as efficiently as possible. After achieving the necessary marks in high school, Steven was accepted at Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology and subsequently completed an Engineering cadetship with IVECO. “During my engineering degree we were required to stop studying for 12 months while we experienced ‘real’ work in an industry of our choice,” Steven says. “I applied with IVECO and worked there as a cadet engineer for one year. “I then went back to my study but stayed on with IVECO working part-time and

Meanwhile, American multinational retail corporation, Walmart, which is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, continues its power plays in the urban transport scene. 2019 saw Walmart US eCommerce compete with Amazon by refining its last mile commitments. While Walmart reportedly employed 5,000 in-store pickers who assemble digital orders, Wall Street Journal reported at the time that the process is slow and costly compared to specialised distribution centre fulfilment. Also, crowdsourced drivers who deliver most Walmart goods to homes often require incentives to take on heavy grocery jobs.
