Like father… Lessons from the old man THERE’S NOTHING quite like fatherly wisdom. It mightn’t always make sense at the time, but sooner or later you find yourself thinking ‘what would he do?’. For many of us, we spend our lives thinking we won’t end up like our dads, only to adopt many of their mannerisms as we get older. Unintentionally, I’ve noticed that I’ve started making the same pained groan my father makes when doing various household tasks ie opening a jar, bending over, sitting down and standing up. While I didn’t take up my dad’s fulltime job as a larrikin, there are those who followed the steps of their father and took up the tools. In this edition of The 6 THE TRADIE
Tradie, we have a chat with a few tradies who were inspired by their dads. Empowered Women in Trades electrician Tammy Vos took over her dad’s business at just 21. She spent her childhood in his workshop tinkering away with tools, and decided to take up the gig full-time. Master Painters Association of Victoria member Bert Bartha, on the other hand, hated the idea of being a painter when he was a kid. The smell of turps turned his tummy, but a switch was eventually flipped which saw him taking over his old man’s operation in the Yarra Valley. Of course, not all tradies are lucky to have dads like Tammy and Bert’s.
Often having a less-than great father figure can impact life down the track. We had a quality chat with tradie coach Aaron Huey, who tells us about his own journey to helping tradies with their mental health. We’re well into 2024, but maybe it’s time for tradies to look into getting a new pair of boots. No matter your brand loyalty, we’ve got you covered with plenty of boot chat to walk circles around you. There’s never a better time to look over your

finances than right now (or maybe after you’ve read this edition). Especially as we deal with a rising cost of living, saving every cent is as important as ever. We talk a bit of money in this edition. Not too much, but enough to make sure you start thinking about saving that sweet dosh.

A tradie’s journey from Australia to America
Bridging oceans IN THE REALM of skilled trades, the tools and tasks may sound similar across the Australian landscape and American cities, yet the tradies of these lands follow distinct paths. My journey from Australia to the vibrant environments of New Orleans and Florida unveiled a diverse

mix of skills, cultures, and practices unique to each region. Australian tradies embody the ‘Jack of all trades’, skilled in various tasks, shaped by a culture rich in apprenticeships and trade schools. In contrast, American tradies often specialise, mastering specific skills in their chosen fields. This adventure was more than just a professional exploration; it was a discovery of the shared values of hard work, skill, and community that bind tradies across the globe, despite the vast oceans between them. THE TRADIE IN AUSTRALIA: VERSATILITY AND HUMOUR IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER The Australian tradie, in the USA, is as iconic
as the kangaroo and is seen to embody a blend of hard work, adaptability, and a broad skill set and experience. Something that stood out for me as I met the American tradies was our Australian tradie humour, characterised by its dry, self-deprecating wit, and how it plays a significant role in workplace camaraderie. It’s a unique cultural element that brings laughter and strengthens community bonds, embodying the resilient and cheerful Australian spirit. For instance, an Aussie tradie might quip, “I’m such a good tradesman, I can cut a piece of wood just by looking at it; it’s true, I saw it with my own eyes!” When I brought a slice of Aussie humour to the American worksites, the reaction was as
enlightening as it was entertaining. Initially, there was a moment of pause, a brief interlude as my mates from across the pond processed the dry, self-deprecating style typical of an Aussie joke. But soon enough, these moments gave way to hearty laughter and wide grins. FROM STATE STANDARDS TO TEAM LAUGHTER: THE AMERICAN TRADIE EXPERIENCE One of the most interesting things I discovered in my trip was that trade education and requirements can vary significantly from state to state, with carpenters in Florida facing different standards than those in New Orleans. Although there were differences in the world of trades in

the USA, there were also significant similarities. Regions like New Orleans and Florida, often hit by natural disasters, face acute shortages in skilled trades essential for rebuilding. Similar to Australia, the USA’s trade industry is also working to overcome gender imbalances. I see the application of positive psychology in fostering inclusive and growthoriented workplaces a key to this effort in both countries, as we aim to create a diverse and resilient workforce. The humour of
KEY STRATEGIES FOR A HEALTHIER WORKPLACE American tradies, known for being straightforward and witty, mirrors their work ethic. For instance, I overheard an American tradie playfully tell their apprentice, “Hey, go grab me the wire stretcher, would you?” Moments later, I saw the apprentice earnestly searching, only to realise the joke. This kind of humour does more than just bring a smile - it lightens the mood and strengthens team bonds, reflecting the industry’s value of quick

wit and adaptability. These are essential traits for navigating the complexities of trade work. POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY IN TRADES: A CATALYST FOR CHANGE Incorporating positive psychology in the trades is revolutionising the industry enhancing psychological safety, diversity, and mental well-being. This approach boosts job satisfaction and resilience and promotes inclusive, supportive work environments. HUMOUR AND POSITIVE CHANGE As we conclude our journey from Australia’s TAFE campuses to
America’s technical colleges, the role of humour alongside positive psychology stands out. Whether it’s an Aussie tradie’s joke about a lefthanded screwdriver or an American’s quip about a bucket of steam, humour unites tradies in their challenging yet rewarding professions. This exploration has been more than a comparison; it’s a testament to the resilience and adaptability of tradies. Remembering that the future of trades is not just built with tools but also shaped by positive attitudes and laughter, we look forward to perhaps one day finding those mythical tools in a tradie’s arsenal.
• Emphasising Resilience: Positive psychology encourages seeing challenges as growth opportunities, building resilience and a positive outlook. • Promoting Diversity and Inclusivity: A focus on inclusivity and diversity under positive psychology nurtures mental well-being and a sense of belonging. • Supportive Culture and Communication: Creating a culture with positive interactions and open communication is crucial for mental health and job satisfaction. This approach is not just beneficial for productivity; it’s key to creating a safe, inclusive, and mentally healthy trade industry.

Clean brush Going green with painting materials

14 THE TRADIE
EVERYONE IS looking for ways to be more environmentally aware in their building methods and choice of materials, yet painting is often overlooked. The construction industry continues to evolve in the use of sustainable recycled materials and the use of more energy efficient products, especially in the new housing market. The benefits of good sustainable painting
practices extend beyond social conscience and responsibility. When you combine proper sustainable painting practices with environmentally friendly products and materials, you are not only preventing damage to waterways and flora, but you are also assisting in preventing damage to the health of the contractors and consumers exposed to organic chemicals.
THE RIGHT STUFF There are many companies that supply sustainable products to consumer and contractors. In particular, Monarch Painting have a range of brushes that are designed to minimise the environmental impact by being made with a bamboo handle and are supplied in a recycled cardboard brush keeper. Monarch also has a plant-based drop sheet
in which part of the product is derived from sugarcane meaning that the production and manufacture of the product does not use oil based or fossil fuel. Paint Manufacturers are also producing paints that have low or zero Volatile Organic Compounds. VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids from a variety of chemicals which may have short or long term

health effects. Paint manufacturers have made a commitment to our industry to continue to research and develop products that are environmentally friendly and promote healthier living spaces. Proper surface preparation is also very important in sustainable painting practices. Thoroughly cleaning and preparing surfaces before painting not only ensures a longer lasting
finish but also reduces the need for additional coats of paint, extends the longevity of the paint impacting the time between recoats. THE FOUR RRRRS When it comes to cleaning brushes and rollers at the end of the day there are several methods to minimise the use of water. Brushes and rollers can be stored in plastic or brush keeper until the end of
the project. The use of a water treatment unit where eco-friendly chemicals are added to the water after the cleaning of brushes and rollers which separates the solids from the liquids which can then be used to water the garden. Never dispose of left over paint in the rubbish bin or on the garden. We are fortunate to have the Paintback scheme in Australia
where you can drop off left over paint and packaging. Paintback disposes of it responsibly diverting it away from landfill and waterways. The packaging is recycled, and the paint is used
as alternative fuel in the manufacture of cement. The Master Painters Association encourages all painters to follow the Four “R” s of Sustainable Painting Practices which are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Remove.

Turning a new stone Australia looks ahead to future without silica stone
16 THE TRADIE
AFTER MONTHS of deliberating and discussions between governments, associations and advocates, Australia became the first country to ban silica-based manufactured stone late last year. It came after relevant Commonwealth ministers met to review Safe Work Australia’s report on silica-based stone and its often deadly side effects. “Today, WHS ministers from the
Commonwealth, states and territories agreed to Safe Work Australia’s recommendation to prohibit the use of engineered stone to protect the health and safety of workers,” Safe Work CEO Marie Boland said. “Workplace exposure to respirable crystalline silica has led to an unacceptable increase in the number of cases of silicosis and other silicarelated diseases. Expert analysis shows that silica dust from engineered
stone poses unique hazards and there is no evidence that low silica engineered stone is safe to work with. “This prohibition will make Australian workplaces safer and healthier.” Silicosis is a harmful – and possibly deadly – lung disease which is common among those working in the building/ construction industry. As well as the Commonwealth, both major retailers IKEA and Bunnings – as well as the

CFMEU – had all resolved to remove silica-based products from their workplaces. “This was an incredibly special day for Australian workers, especially every CFMEU member who fought for this life-saving change,” CFMEU State Secretary Zac Smith said. “This announcement is a massive victory for people like Kyle Goodwin, the former stonemason who bravely fronted our union’s campaign after contracting incurable silicosis from simply from doing his job. “Kyle selflessly dedicated a huge chunk of his remaining days to stopping other workers from being given the same unthinkable diagnosis.” “Like Bernie Banton and asbestos, Kyle Goodwin’s name deserves to be inextricably linked to the ban on engineered stone.” WHAT NOW? Safe Work has started drafting updates to the WHS Regulations, and work with Federal and state/territory ministers to implement the ban into WHS laws. “The cost to industry, while real and relevant, cannot outweigh the
significant costs to workers, their families and the broader Australian community that result from exposure to respirable crystalline silica from engineered stone. ”Continued work with engineered stone poses an unacceptable risk to workers, which is why we recommended a prohibition on the use of all engineered stone. ”Now that a prohibition has been agreed by WHS ministers, Safe Work Australia will progress amendments to the model WHS Regulations and develop guidance to support PCBUs and workers understand and prepare for the change.” NEW ERA Alternatives to silicabased stone products have been around for some time, but innovations are firmly on the rise. The University of Adelaide – for example - has developed a true silica-free alternative to the engineered stone. The initiative is being run alongside SilkSurface in the wake of silica-based stone being banned in Australia. “We can confirm that this product has been proven
100 per cent silica-free through independent testing undertaken by the University of Adelaide’s School of Public Health,” SilkSurface’s Ben Scott said. Ben added the company and the university had been working on an alternative to silica-based stone for some time before Australia’s decision for a nationwide ban. “The fact is that customers want a quality product which looks good, which is affordable, and which can be manufactured in a way which is safe for workers,” he said. “This is an example of industry responding in an innovative way to regulation, and we look forward to getting the product onto shelves in the new year. “The ban on engineered stone provided industry with opportunities to deliver better products for customers and workers, which is what we have done.” According to Ben, SilkSurface offers the same feel and look of silica based manufactured stone. It’s also durable, heat resistant and offers more stain resistance.

Outhet re Fishing isolated structure
WHAT DO deep holes, wonkies, detached shoals, bommies, wrecks and tiny coastal creeks all have in common? These places represent isolated structure. Let’s take a deep dive into what constitutes isolated structure and why fish congregate around it.
Swirling currents

WHEELS ’N’ GEAR Tonnes of space, paired with the latest tech, means there’s little Trafic can’t do to make tradies lives easier
Tradie mate THERE ARE FEW vehicles on Aussie roads that get the job done quite like Renault Trafic. Tradies who put in the hard yards every day need a van that can keep up. Whether it’s carrying a big load, serving as a mobile office or providing the latest in safety and tech, there are four major reasons tradies can trust Trafic above the rest. ABSOLUTELY LOADED Someone working solo – or with a small team – needs a vehicle that can carry all their tools, materials and equipment. Look no further than Renault Trafic, which
sports a best-in-class load length of up to 4.15m. With both long and short wheelbase options and a maximum cargo area of 6.7m³, Trafic ensures that tradies have ample space and versatility to keep all their tools, equipment, and materials easily accessible. Should tradies need to tie something down or plug something in, Trafic has up to 14 anchoring points and a 12v power socket to look after them in this regard as well. Getting gear into enclosed or roofed areas can be a pesky obstacle for tradies. There’s nothing worse when they rock up
to a job and have to haul things back and forth because their ride can’t fit. Trafic’s height of 1.97m is hard to beat for that. ON-THE-GO COMFORT You’d think all that storage space would compromise Trafic’s comfort. Think again. The latest edition makes improvements in ergonomics, design, and finishes, to offer a professional, luxury carlike feel. Tradies aren’t always on the tools, and Renault has fitted out Trafic with all the facilities they need to do paperwork and check

ULTIMATE WORKHORSE But the appeal goes beyond just capacity and comfort. Trafic makes sure tradies aren’t constantly ducking into fuel stations to top up, with its best in class driving range, thanks to a combination of economical fuel consumption (6.5L/100km) and large fuel tank. This means less time – and money spent at the bowser and more time on the tools
UNCOMPROMISING SAFETY Renault also breaks out the top-of-the-line safety so tradies can trust their ride. Safety is a top priority for Renault with this van – featuring 10 driving assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, car-to-car Active Emergency Braking Systems. It also has blind-spot monitoring, tyre-pressure warning, traffic-sign recognition, electric folding door mirrors, and front and rear parking sensors. This ensures not only efficiency but also a worryfree driving experience. Trafic has all the features and functions tradies need to unlock a new level of efficiency. It is the ultimate companion for tradies on the job, starting from $49,000 before on-road costs. Tradies, don’t miss out on the opportunity to enhance your business with Renault Trafic. emails. Trafic’s modular seating allows for various configurations, including a mobile office so tradies can have everything at their fingertips. Speaking of fingertips, Trafic has all the latest tech to ensure tradies aren’t wanting for accessibility. The eightinch easy link touchscreen includes features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, DAB+, and USB connectivity, ensuring that tradies stay in control and connected wherever their job takes them.

Boat Buyer’s Guide at barcrusher.com.au BAR CRUSHER EXCLUSIVES:
WHEELS ’N’ GEAR
Crushing it BAR CRUSHER HAS been at the forefront of Aussiemade factory-built plate aluminium boats for the last 20 years. The techniques and processes may have changed dramatically, but Bar Crusher’s passion and attention to detail remains second to none. The Tradie got to experience that meticulousness firsthand by taking a tour of Bar Crusher’s headquarters at Dandenong South in Melbourne’s southeast. It’s at this massive facility that Bar Crusher is able to cut, craft, colour and deliver many tradies the boat of their dreams. ALL HANDS ON DECK Bar Crusher Operations Manager Glen Kostuik ran us through the many processes Bar Crusher goes through on-site. From raw materials, all the way to customers picking up their new favourite toy, there’s 28 THE TRADIE
someone on-site handling each boat through its build. STAGE 1: MACHINE SHOP All Bar Crusher boats start as blank sheets of aluminium. It’s locally sourced and brought into the warehouse floor for laser cutting and bending. “These days, there’s pretty much no one out there with a saw – everything’s laser cut on design from the office,” Glen said. STAGE 2: WELDING As well as making boats tradies love, Bar Crusher also employs a fair few for certain works. This includes the welding of the pieces together, which requires speciality aluminium welding training which Bar Crusher does in-house. “We generally take on people who’ve started in the welding industry, started in steel, and we’ve retrained them to work
with aluminium and the specific styles we use,” Glen said. As each vessel naturally needs to be as watertight as possible, the welding process is hugely important to get right. “Everything is made to fit in a specific way, we don’t measure using tape measurers,” Glen said. “Everything has to be precise because boats are inherently hard to measure.” Bar Crusher General Manager Sam Holmes emphasised while this stage was very important to get right, every stage needed to be done perfectly to craft a seaworthy boat. “If you mess up at a certain point, you can’t come back and fix it later, it needs to be checked and tested at that point,” he said. “An example is the fuel tanks, which are built into the hull, they need to be pressure tested when they’re installed. “If your car breaks down, you can slow down to the side of the road. You can’t exactly stop in the middle of the ocean.”
STAGE 3: PREPPING, PRIMING AND PAINTING Gone are the days of painting a boat by hand, Bar Crusher has a much more efficient method in mind. Like many other modern tools at Bar Crusher’s disposal, its painting is done via a large, speciallybuilt machine. STAGE 4: FIT-OUTS This is really where an individual’s boat comes to life. Anglers and their styles are all different, and Bar Crusher’s team is ready to install all the latest toys. “Fishermen love to have a custom boat – they want something that’s different to everyone else,” Glen added. “There’s a whole bunch of options we can attach at this stage of the process. “We have our standard inclusions and whatever else you can possibly dream up we can add on as well.” STAGE 5: SIGNED AND DELIVERED Once that’s all done, the finishing touches are made on the boat and it’s

ready for its new owner to pick it up. “For many, this is a lifelong dream to come in here and pick up their boat,” Sam said. “We get them as they come in and lay their hands on their boat, you can tell how excited they are to take a Bar Crusher home.” Glen said this process from purchase to pick up generally takes about four months. As you can tell, each boat is handled by many of Bar Crusher’s 75 team members on-site. Glen said the facility has evolved tremendously since starting out as a simple garage. He added that every year it continued to grow with Bar Crusher’s overall pioneering innovation. “I don’t get sick of it – I love building the boats,” Glen said. “I come in every morning and I do a loop past the finished boats. The drive to keep making them better is always there.”

Being an electrician is hard enough, but imagine taking on a whole electrical business at 21! Geelong’s Tammy Vos did just that
As well as commercial jobs, TTS Electrics also does the occasional residential work
38 THE TRADIE

TAMMY KNEW from a young age she wanted to be a tradie. Having a father like Allan – an electrician – helped to fuel that aspiration. “I still remember going out to the shed when I was growing up, helping sort out my dad’s nuts and bolts with him and play with those board games that teach you about circuits,” Tammy said. “I always really enjoyed it. When I was going through school, I just
realised it wasn’t for me. “I was going out with dad on the weekends to help out, so I always thought it’d be cool to take on an apprenticeship.” After finishing year 11, Tammy did her electrician apprenticeship through her dad’s business, becoming fully qualified when she was 21. THE RIGHT SPARK Not long after Tammy completed her apprenticeship, Allan became unwell and had to stop running his business – TTS Electrics. This business was handed down to 21-yearold Tammy, who jumped head-first into the frying pan. “It was definitely

daunting, and I was probably out my depth for a lot of it,” Tammy admitted. “But the challenge was really good for me now that I look back on it, and it’s given me so much confidence.” Running your own business is a tradie’s dream come true, and ready or not this dream became reality for Tammy quicker than expected. TTS Electrics’ main clientele is commercial and facility maintenance in the Geelong area, as well as a few domestic jobs and refurbs. As Managing Director, Tammy’s learnt the ins and outs of operating a business, while also growing her skills as a sparky. One thing she’s had to perfect during that process: a healthy work/ life balance. “It hasn’t always been easy, there’s definitely been moments where I’ve burnt out a bit because I’ve been trying to do too much,” Tammy said. “Now I can rely more on my staff and know my limits – making sure you get that balance right was difficult when I started out.” CONNECTING Operating a business is one thing, but Tammy had to tackle the tradie world while it remains maledominant. “I was the only girl in the company and my class at trade school for all four years I was there,” she said. “I definitely didn’t come across any women in the industry back then, but it’s slowly changing now.”
A proud member of Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT), Tammy said it was important for female tradies to help one another out where they can. “EWIT’s really awesome, I love what they’re doing for the industry,” she added. “Whether it’s events or building up a community to help women get into trade as well as supporting those already in the trades.” PLUGGING IN Tammy – now 27 – has plenty of electrician experience under her tool belt. Despite this, the day-today work has never been dull for her, with every job offering up new challenges and satisfying results. “I just love giving clients what they’re after and bringing their ideas to life,” Tammy said. “Whether that be in new lights or something much bigger – the aspect of being hands-on and bringing projects to life is really awesome.” One thing Tammy certainly doesn’t regret is taking up the trade from a young age, with her life as a sparky leading to endless possibilities and what should be a long and prosperous career going forward. “If you’re thinking about it, give it a go,” she said, “It’s so handy to have the skills under your belt at an early age, and there’s so much opportunity to expand that career.” You can find out more about TTS Electrics at ttselectrics.com.au or on Instagram @sparkyvos

MIND YOUR BUSINESS Underinsurance is not a common phrase among tradies, but one you’d best be on the lookout for heading through 2024. Image: Andrey Popov stock.adobe.com
Buckle down How tradies can avoid underinsurance in 2024 THE NEW YEAR is in full swing, but you’ve hopefully got jobs booked well into the new year. As you look ahead, consider adding ‘make sure I’m not underinsured’ to your 2024 to-do list. WHAT’S UNDERINSURANCE? We’re glad you asked! Underinsurance happens when you do not have adequate insurance
limits or the right types of insurance to cover losses when you make a claim. Your cover limits might have suited your business when you first took out a policy, but they may no longer be enough. If you’ve added services to your offering or your business has changed a lot since you started, you may also have new risks that aren’t covered.
CHECK YOUR POLICIES So, what can a tradie do? Start by checking your current insurance policies. Consider if the amount of cover you have would be enough to get yourself back to business as usual. Inflation might make replacing damaged tools or stolen supplies a lot dearer. You may need to adjust your Portable Equipment* or Contents*
cover (options available in most Business Packs) in response. Also, think about how your business has grown and changed. You might want additional types of insurance, like Theft, Tax
Audit* or Cyber Liability*, to address new or growing threats to your business. SWITCH & SAVE WITH BIZCOVER Remove underinsurance dramas before the new year! With competitive pricing and no paperwork, BizCover can have you covered online in minutes. You could even save money, too. Next gen(ders) Expo aimed at possible female tradies returns
how positive and open the people were to talk and explain things,” one student said.
GIRLS AND NON-BINARY students can learn about exciting careers in trades and tech at The Trades Fit expo in 2024. Last year, 2,493 girls and non-binary students from 120 schools came to The Trades Fit expo. There were 85 booths from different industries, with plenty of fun stuff to do, like hands-on activities and awesome tech displays. It’ll be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre, hosted by Victoria’s Department of Education,
LEARNING AND LEAPING After going to the expo, almost half of the students (46 per cent) thought about doing a job in trades, and more than half (51 per cent) got interested in trades and tech jobs. Even the teachers, 95 per cent of them, said they are now more likely to suggest trades and tech jobs to their female and nonbinary students. “The expo was solely dedicated to girls and non-binary [students], very engaging and interactive. How and why the painting life chose tradie Bert
Different strokes Growing up, the scent of turps was enough to drive Bert Bartha round the bend. Nowadays, he can’t get enough of it 48 THE TRADIE
The smell of paint, turps or varnish used to send Bert running the other way when he was young, but things have changed massively since
Being a part of MPAV has helped Bert not only fine-tune his business sense, but also source jobs in his area
moving to Queensland, Bert did his best to keep away from anything to do with painting. However, he eventually found himself back in the nest of Yarra Valley, where his dad and the paintbrush were waiting for him. BRUSHING SHOULDERS “I ended up going back to painting, and the more I did it, the more I fell in love with it,” Bert said. “I did my apprenticeship with my old man, then he had the foresight to ‘fire’ me so I could work for other people to learn more.” As he got more comfortable with the trade, Bert started building his own client-base.
It soon came time for him to move up in the family business – Excellent Coatings. “My dad and I sat down and I bought 50 per cent of the business off him,” Bert said. “We co-ran it for a couple of years, then I hustled him out and bought the other 50 per cent. “He still works in the company, but he can go
home and turn his brain off.” Eight years on from taking the reins, and Bert is loving every minute on the job. His six-person team has a client portfolio consisting of jobs for building body corporates, high-end domestic jobs as well as working for select builders on more bespoke jobs.

BERT GREW UP surrounded by paint cans. His father - Gabriel has been painting all his life since growing up in Hungary. He emigrated to Australia in 1987, where he set up his own painting business in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Bert said when he was growing up there was no shortage of paint-themed chores to be done. “There was no such thing as free pocket money in our household. So if we wanted it we had to paint with him to earn it,” he said. “I swore I’d never be a painter because I hated the smell of dad’s turpsey van.” From dabbling in music, to working at JB Hi-Fi and

A NEW COAT These days, Bert mostly handles the business end of Excellent Coatings, which includes doing quotes and “answering emails”. Since becoming a small business owner, Bert said he’s found the assistance from his local Master Painters Association to be invaluable. Master Painters Assocation Victoria (MPAV) helps thousands of painters both in VIC and Tasmania with business advice, as well as providing info on relevant legislation. The Barthas have been MPAV members for more than 30 years, and have benefitted greatly. “Since I’ve been a part of MPAV, it’s been a massive help,” Bert said. “When I was taking over
the business, I was doing all the courses they had, as well as estimating, client relationships and leadbased courses.” While Bert stands as a seasoned painting pro, he said having a team like MPAV at his back was a massive relief. “The best thing I get from Master Painters is the dayto-day support,” he said. “I know I can call up if I have a question on anything to do with paying my guys or superannuation or legal ramifications and terms and conditions. “They’ve been an invaluable part of the business. Meet the man coaching tradies How Aaron Huey went from the “angry Scotsman” to helping coach tradies to lead healthy and happy careers
52 THE TRADIE
AARON KNEW from a young age he’d be involved with tradie life. Born and raised in Scotland; Aaron became a chippy at just 15 after leaving school. “I had no interest in staying in school, so I bailed,” he said. “There was always something around the satisfaction of building something that I always
wanted to be a part of. “The thought of going to uni, working at a desk or even joining the services never really interested me at all.” Once he was fully qualified in carpentry and joinery, the idea of venturing Down Under became more tempting than ever. “My uncle and aunt moved to Australia, and
they were encouraging me to come over to get work and do my apprenticeship here,” Aaron said. “But I was a bit green then, but I always had it in the back of my head. “One of my old bosses told me he had the opportunity to come to Australia but didn’t, and he’s always regretted it. “Home’s always there. If it works: great. If it
doesn’t, you can always go back.” It was with that mentality that Aaron eventually packed his things and traded the Scottish Highlands for the Sydney beaches. COAST TO COAST Aaron acclimatised quickly to the Aussie tradie life. His skill had him climbing
Sometimes, the ‘she’ll be right’ approach isn’t the best way to handle a problem. Image: Jamie - stock. adobe.com
the carpentry ladder quickly in Sydney. “I moved up the ladder quite a bit to site manager and site foreman for about three of four years,” Aaron said. “I knew Australia was always gonna be the place for me. The laid back lifestyle suited me to a tee. “That, and I was sick of the rain and miserable weather back in Scotland.”
The tradie life had Aaron chugging along nicely. However, two major events in his life led him to re-evaluate what mattered to Aaron. “I lost a friend back home in Scotland out of the blue, and that was my first real battle with mental health,” he said. “Then, it happened here in Australia as well.
I lost two friends within the span of two years. “Not only did it affect me mental health-wise, but it made me question what I was doing with my life and did I really want to keep working six days a week and 14-hour days as a site manager. “By this time, I had two young kids … so I wanted to find something different and I found coaching.”
A HELPFUL HAND A counselling development weekend helped Aaron get the lay of the land when it came to coaching. It inspired him to take up life coaching, while also remaining as a site manager, for about a year. “It helped me personally with my own anxiety and anger management,” Aaron said. “It dawned on me that
there’s things here no one has ever taught me on-site “Why you get angry, how to manage your anxiety and why we do certain things.” Not only did Aaron notice a change within, but also found his fellow tradies were getting on-board with a more mentally healthy approach to dayto-day work. “I used to be referred to
THE TRADIE 53

as ‘the angry Scotsman’ because I was always the smallest and the loudest guy on-site,” he said. “Then later on they noticed how much more chill I was about stuff. “If something happens, like the concrete doesn’t come, we can deal with it.” The more Aaron began implementing positive changes in his own worklife, the more he realised he could help other tradies do the same. “I need to give back because this has helped me as a father, as a friend, and a better site foreman,” he said. “I looked at all the angry boys who’d go home to a six-pack and a dog because they had no relationship with their families or kids.
Aaron found his experience as a tradie helped him relate to those he’s coached. Image: cineberg - stock. adobe.com
54 THE TRADIE
“I know I’m not the only person suffering in silence here.” BUILDING A HEALTHY FUTURE Tradie mental health continues to be a conversation dominating the industry. Many associations, unions and businesses are doing their best to ensure tradies are healthy both mentally as well as physically. Aaron said while initiatives like antidepression dogs and suicide awareness discussions helped in their own way, he felt the issue could use more of a tradie touch. “What I was finding when I was offering my services to places that they’ve taken to it better than if
someone coming from an office who’s never spent a day on site,” Aaron said. “Having walked the walk and talk the talk, I think that’s a better response than just somebody coming down from an office.” PAYING IT FORWARD Much like complex issues on the worksite, navigating mental health isn’t straightforward. Aaron’s doing a lot of growing in the 20 years (12 in Australia) he’s been a tradie, and his step into coaching has left him – and those he’s spoken to – all the better for it. “I get people telling me that we need more of this on-site,” he said. “The older guys need to learn just because it’s been
the way it is, doesn’t mean it need to be that way – clearly it’s not working for us. “And these young guys need to learn they’re not invincible.” As the discussion on tradies mental health remains ever-evolving,
Aaron hopes to add his expertise to the conversation. You can find out more on Instagram @aaron_wd_huey lifeline: 13 11 14

Booted
UP
Thanks to Melbourne’s wild weather, Mel was able to test the boots in the wet and in the heat
Mel loved the #8001s and their wider fit
Safety, simplicity and comfort are all major factors when tradies pick their boots. Blundstone brings all those and more with the latest in its RotoFlex range – the #8001 boots

Blundstone’s RotoFlex® #8001 boots THIS BEASTLY looking black boot from Blundstone packs all the features RotoFlex is known for, with a sleek and simple elastic pull-on sides. For this test, we enlisted the help of carpenter Mel Reinshagen of TCM Building. She was working on a site in Melbourne’s north-west during a wetter than normal summer, which meant the boots were tested by both the heat and rain. TEST #1: GET A GRIP Safety is a vital thing for tradies to keep in mind when selecting boots, and the #8001s are teeming with features here. They sport a GripTek® Heavy-Duty sole which ensures tradies such as Mel have a reduced risk of tripping, falling or slipping. “I’m so clumsy, so it’s good to have something that’ll keep my feet and toes protected no matter what,” she added. GripTek® also provides the #8001s with heat resistance up to 140°C as well as high-abrasion resistance. If you work with wires, you can wear these knowing your feet are also electrical hazard protected as well thanks to the GripTek® tech.
GripTek® Heavy-Duty sole A steel cap on the toe of the boot with Blundstone’s Fortashield protection was the icing on the cake of the #8001s. It gave Mel extra assurance her tootsies were covered in case of any mishaps.

1 The elastic sides make for these boots easy to take off, but remain secure when on
2 GripTek® allows for these boots to provide ultimate stability for tradies
3 Like other RotoFlex boots from Blundstone, the #8001s come with a steel cap
2
TEST #2: BUILT FOR COMFORT The classic Blundstone side elastic makes putting the #8001 boots on a breeze. “They’re tight but not too tight, they hold together well … you still have the elastic which is a bonus, I’m not a big fan of shoe laces,” Mel said. “These are really easy to get on and off with little trouble.” To make these boots as comfy as they are safe, Blundstone has employed its SoftCell® and AirCell features. AirCell is a specially designed footbed which increases airflow and breathability throughout the boot. The unique biomechanical foot-cradling design of SoftCell® means the #8001s are also designed to keep your soles comfy while maximising balance and manoeuvrability. An understated feature for the #8001s is they have a wide fit.
SoftCell® and AirCell
“They’re a perfect fit for my foot,” Mel said. “I’ve got a really wide foot so it’s actually nice to have a boot that’s quite roomy.” BOOTS MADE FOR WALKIN’ For tradies working all day on the site, it’s hard to beat Blundstone’s #8001s. Mel was hard pressed to find any boots more suitable for her work on the site than these. “I’m fairly new to the industry, and I’ve tried a bunch of different boots,” she said. “The first pair I had didn’t last long because my feet were cooked by the end of the first day. “The ones I have at the moment are pretty good, but these #8001s from Blundstone have been even better. “They’re comfortable, they’re durable, I’ve got no complaints.”

Cement Australia’s Rapid Set Concrete

A FULL DAY’S WORK can be stacked with tasks for a tradie. Sometimes, however, a lot of that time can be consumed by waiting for things to set, such as concrete. The unique formulation used by Cement Australia in its Rapid Set Concrete is designed to harden in minutes without the need to mix. Carpenter Nebal Abilmona of Sealand Building needed a suitable cement for placing posts at a site in Melbourne’s east. We ventured along with some Rapid Set Concrete, and he was blow away with the results. TEST #1: A GOOD POUR Nebal had a hole dug and 2.7m post in place ready for some cement. He had appropriate supports in place to ensure it didn’t move, and pre-wet the hole to limit water absorption. Nebal then combined the cement with the appropriate amount of water, and away he went. “Applying this cement was super easy,” he said. “I found this aggregate Cement Australia has used is a bit finer rather than larger. “It mixed up really nicely, it was creamy and easy to use. Cement Australia recommends 2L per 20kg bag, and you can add 0.3-0.5L to get the consistency you want.” “I imagine this would be great for doing fences,

The specialised aggregates, cement and sand Cement Australia uses in the Rapid Set allows for an amazing hardening time of just 15 minutes.
STANDING ON BUSINESS Cement Australia’s Rapid Set Cement made the job as easy as can be for Nebal. The Aussie-made formula ensures it hardens fast and is pretty much solid after an hour, shaving off time for tradies who have their hands full. It absolutely gets our tick of approval for all your nonstructural cement jobs.

3 Having cement that
hardens in 15 minutes makes for an efficient job for tradies Images: Prime Creative Media
TEST #2: FAST SETTING Nabal was able to remove the supports after about an hour, and by then the cement had well and truly set. Knowing how quickly the setting process was, he was able to go about other tasks on the site knowing the Rapid Set was all good by itself after 15 minutes. “The two bags held up the post super well,” Nebal said. “Having it set in 15 minutes was awesome and is a huge timesaver for me.” As Nebal mentioned, the Rapid Set has a tonne of applications, but it is not designed to be used on structural projects. Having built his business from scratch, there’s plenty of lessons Beau’s learned about what makes a business thrive. LEARN FROM THE BEST One of the highlights of running his own operation is that Beau can help train his own apprentices. “Many of them started with me when they were 18 and now they’re developing into grown men,” he added. “It’s good to help them hone their skills, I get a bit of a kick out of that.” This extends to retaining his tradies – creating an environment where each chippy wants to rock up to. “I want to be building the business every year to be bigger and better,” Beau said. “That we’re winning good work and the team’s happy
and enjoying the job.” Beau said another advantage in a healthy team is having tradies who want to grow their careers and skills instead of enjoy as many smoko breaks as they can. “You’ve gotta hire people that want to do better and looking to further their career,” he added. Do it’. “I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but it’s those mistakes that you learn from. I try and provide a pretty fair workplace so
the boys can have a good crack and if it doesn’t pull through, then just don’t make the same mistakes next time. “Developing those skills – you’re gonna have to make mistakes to move forward. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” FIRM YET FORGIVING Patience is a virtue, but it’s something Beau’s had to hone as he’s climbed the ranks. He’s admitted a short fuse has gotten the better of him in the past, but tempering his frustrations has led to overall success. “Something I had to learn was not letting out
my frustration out as much as I used to,” he said. “The building industry is a hard industry, that’s just the way it is. “You’ve got so many people you rely on, and no doubt you can’t go through it without someone letting you down. “It’s just about understanding what actually goes so you don’t get stressed out or worry about small things. “Just get on with it and get the job done.” You can find out more about Beau and Beaumade Builds at beaumadebuilds.com. au or on Instagram @ beaumade.builds

A boot ahead IN 2019, BLUNDSTONE set its sights on the next generation of work and safety boots. Blundstone spent years researching what the industry needs from their footwear and the challenges faced by the modern workforce. After launching our RotoFlex composite toe cap range in 2022 and steel range in 2023, Blundstone Australia’s RotoFlex range has been recognised with one of Australia’s most prestigious awards. The RotoFlex Safety Footwear received a Good Design Award Winner Accolade for outstanding design and innovation. The jury commented that the Blundstone RotoFlex Range “expertly adapts core design thinking.” “An excellent use of research, interactive design and testing has produced a rugged, purpose-driven boot. Constructed with recycled components, the Blundstone RotoFlex Range is safe, comfortable and long-lasting,” the panel comments read. 64 THE TRADIE
INGENUITY THROUGHOUT Blundstone learned that ankle rolls, trips and falls are some of the most common worksite injuries. Tradies told the team at Blundstone they wanted support and protection, without sacrificing painfree, all-day comfort. We also learned that comfort and fit play a key role in reducing fatigue and injury and that women’s feet need specific support to cater for variables such as arch heights, range of motion and everything in between. During the initial RotoFlex research, Blundstone expanded its understanding of the differences between men’s and women’s feet and the support they need to tackle the worksite. This led to Blundstone’s team to design two composite styles and two steel styles in the RotoFlex range that offer a genuine women’s fit. As we approach International Women’s Day and Women in Construction Week, Blundstone is striving to
ensure women in trade understand what it means to say, “genuine women’s fit.” THE SHOE FITS Blundstone uses “genuine women’s fit” to highlight products that have been created on a woman’s footwear mould, also known as a last. This takes into consideration variables like shape, length, and circumference—because women’s feet are not just smaller versions of men’s. Four styles in the RotoFlex range offer a genuine women’s fit—the

To show that Blundstone is committed to women’s support, comfort, and safety, its taken this specificity one step further. Each Women’s RotoFlex style is fitted with a cushioning AirCell footbed. The footbed has been shaped and constructed with a velvet top sheet and a soft foam suited to the lighter pressures of a women’s build—the first time Blundstone has

EWIT and Steel Blue team up for Christmas surprise
AS THE TRADIE landscape becomes increasingly diverse, plenty of barriers stopping people from getting involved become more obvious. This is certainly the case for many women looking to get into the 74 THE TRADIE
trades, particularly those from vulnerable or disadvantaged backgrounds. A little goes a long way, and for Christmas last year, women in trades advocacy association Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT) helped make a difference for 20 women tradies. Partnering with Steel Blue, EWIT gifted 20 pairs of boots to women who needed them most. EWIT Founder and CEO Hacia Atherton said this initiative wasn’t just developed overnight, with
plenty of thought going into it. “It was born out of countless conversations and shared experiences with incredible women who aspire to thrive in the trades industry,” she said. “Many of these women have expressed the same challenges - the high barriers to entry into the industry and the struggle to afford the necessary

Empowered Women in Trades, with the help of Steel Blue, took ‘walking a mile in someone else’s shoes’ to a whole new level during Christmas
gear, especially quality work boots.” LACING UP Hacia is no stranger to being a woman in the male-dominated tradie industry. She said boots were but one obstacle that often prevented more women from getting into the industry. “Imagine wanting to pursue a career in the trades, to build a future filled with opportunities, but being held back by the simple lack of proper work boots,” Hacia said. “This is a reality for countless women who face adversity, whether due to financial constraints, life circumstances, or a lack of access to resources. “At EWIT, we recognise that every woman deserves a fair chance to thrive in the trades. We understand that empowering women means providing them with not just skills and knowledge but also the essential tools of the trade. And that’s precisely why our 20-boot gift is so crucial.” Hacia added that her own personal experiences helped EWIT land on Steel Blue as its preferred supplier. “As someone who has personally experienced the benefits of Steel Blue boots due to my medical conditions and past adversity, I can attest to their quality and comfort of the boots,” she said. “These boots are more than just protective gear;
Hacia with the boots before she heads out to gift them
they are a source of comfort and confidence for women working in various challenging environments. “Our collaboration with Steel Blue is not just about boots; it’s about providing women with the assurance that their feet are well taken care of, one step at a time.” STURDY FOUNDATION Steel Blue CEO Peter Bell said partnering with EWIT was founded on a united purpose of helping to encourage women to consider a skilled trade. “Steel Blue was the first brand in Australia to develop female specific
work boots and as we’ve seen an increase in women picking up the tools as a career opportunity, so has our range to provide even more choice,” he said. “This partnership was a natural next step for Steel Blue to further support women in trades and are honoured to be able to provide boots for this initiative. “EWIT are at the coalface to create equal opportunities for tradeswomen and we are honoured to be further empowering them by being their exclusive work boot partner.” The boots provided to these 20 women tradies
were no ordinary boots either. They sport Steel Blue’s popular Southern Cross® Zip which makes securing the boot on and off easy. “We hope these packs will go a long way to paving a new path in life and create equal opportunities for tradeswomen through the important work of EWIT,” Peter added. STACKED STOCKINGS Hacia said the feedback from the initiative – and EWIT’s wider partnership with Steel Blue – had been heartfelt and “overwhelmingly positive”. She said the overarching
feedback could be felt in four ways: Gratitude: “Many of the recipients expressed deep gratitude for the boots. They see these boots as more than just footwear; they’re symbols of support and empowerment. Empowerment: “Recipients shared how these boots empower them in their daily work. They mentioned how the comfortable and safe footwear allows them to focus on their tasks, giving them the confidence to excel in their roles.” Changed Lives: “Some recipients shared stories of how these boots have made a significant impact on their lives. For those who previously struggled with inadequate footwear or financial barriers, these boots will be life-changing. They may talk about how this gift has opened up new opportunities for them.” Boosted Confidence: Many highlighted how these boots boost their confidence on job sites. Confidence is crucial in industries where women are underrepresented. They explained how they feel more valued and belong to the trade community with the right gear.” STEPPING FORWARD With 20 women tradies entering 2024 with work boots, Hacia hoped the gesture would set the tone for a year of empowerment for diversity in trades. “Overall, the feedback highlighted the profound impact that this gift has on the lives of these women in trades,” she added. “It’s not just about boots; it’s about empowerment, opportunities, and a brighter future.” THE TRADIE 75
