I
am so excited to finally join you for No-Dig Down Under 2022. After nearly a three-year hiatus, No-Dig is back! Following the success of the September 2019 event held in Melbourne and due to overwhelming support from sponsors, exhibitors and delegates, No-Dig is coming to Sydney, hosted at the International Convention Centre (ICC). As the southern hemisphere’s only largescale conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology, and the second largest of its kind in the world, the event features a world-class conference program, with three conference streams all focused on different aspects of the industry. There are also training courses on trenchless methods presented by industry leaders; and an exhibition extending over 4500 sqm and featuring exhibitors from all sectors, which is all organised in partnership with the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT). This edition includes a focus on vaccum and hydro excavation, relining and software. There is also a dedicated section to the show guide where you can learn more about who will be speaking, an overview of the conference program, and where to find all the exhibitors. Trenchless Australasia June features a cover story on GN Solids’ new and revolutionary hydrovac slurry processing system. The slurry processing solution is to
use liquid solids separation equipment to treat soil, soup or slurry generated from hydrovac, excavation or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects, and produces reusable material for construction and discharge clean water. With 2022 already throwing us our fair share of challenges, the trenchless industry remains positive and ready to tackle all that comes its way. It is inspiring to see so many new and old companies continue to work through these challenging times, and building towards a successful future. This edition you will also see an array of features, including content on HDD, relining, microtunnelling, vacuum and hydro excavating, finance, rehab and repair, and software. Looking ahead to this year, the team here at Trenchless Australasia have even more themes to dive further into about the trenchless industry and provide insightful and thought-leadership pieces from the sector. Happy reading! Molly Hancock Managing Editor molly.hancock@primecreative.com.au

s lockdowns have lifted and society goes back to normal, the trenchless industry sees face-to-face networking and conferences recommence, highlighting the importance of connecting in person. One event that is finally going ahead in the No-Dig Down Under Conference & Exhibition. It has taken us slightly longer to get here this year, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic disrupting our plans for the 2021 event and it being post-ponded from March . However, I am pleased to see so many of you in person after three years apart. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone. Thank you to our sponsors and exhibitors for continuing to believe in the vision of NoDig Down Under, and supporting the event through a postponement. Looking at the quality of the exhibition, the training courses and the technical content we have planned for this year, I can say with certainty – it was worth the wait. As Australia’s only dedicated exhibition and conference for trenchless technology, this event is incredibly important for our industry. To all our exhibitors – thank you for showcasing your latest innovations and how you are directly contributing to the advancement of our industry. I am looking forward to speaking with you all and finding out more about what you have been up to over the past three years. Without your support, No-Dig Down Under would not be possible.
This event is the one place where we can see all the advancements in technology, solutions from suppliers and meet with our peers in one spot. I for one, find each No-Dig Down Under event more inspiring than the last, and I’m sure this edition will be no exception. The NASTT and ASTT’s training packages will be held at No-Dig as well. This is a great opportunity for attendees to enhance their knowledge and learn from industry professionals. It will cover horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and new installations, and is considered to be the global standard for education on trenchless technology. The training programs will be invaluable to anyone encounters trenchless technologies as part of their employment, but they are best suited to civil and geotechnical engineers, council, utility and government employees, and beginner installers. The courses will run on Tuesday, June 14, from 8am to 5pm, at the International Convention Centre in Sydney. Following on from No-Dig, The ASTT is pleased to be running a trenchless technical stream at Water NZ in October 2022, hosted in Christchurch. Please reach out to your respective Councillor to discuss the opportunity to present in New Zealand. Ben Crosby ASTT President bencrosby@bamser.com.au

DISCOUNTS FOR ASTT MEMBERS One of the key benefits of being a member of the ASTT is that members are entitled to have a 10 per cent discount at our National Conferences. What this means in simple terms for example is, an individual member attends one of the training courses being offered at the Sydney 2022 event, then that member will save $100 off the training course fee. Should the same person decide to also register as a delegate, then the saving would be a further $220. When you consider the cost of individual membership is a mere $148.50, then that individual member would have saved $320 which is a significant saving and clearly covers the membership fees. So, it is one of the many incentives to become a member and enjoy these discounts at our events. Similar benefits will be applied to the next National Conference and Exhibition that is currently scheduled for Brisbane over 12 to 15 September 2023. For more information on membership and the benefits, please refer to the following web link on the ASTT website. NEWS IN BRIEF
North East Water makes breakthrough at Beechworth sewer project North East Water has confirmed that the Beechworth sewer upgrade in underway. A 1 km horizontal long-bore is being drilled from the company’s wastewater treatment plant in Woolshed to Beechworth under the Historic Park. The next step is to enlarge the pilot bore before a 1km long pipe is welded together and pulled back through the hole. The project is necessary to address sewer overflows from an outlet structure on Church Street to the Historic Park. The existing pipe system that transfers sewage to the treatment plant is not able to cope with the infiltration of storm water during heavy rain events. By installing a larger transfer pipe, it will allow more inflow and protect against sewer spills. A new pump station is also being constructed at the bottom of Church Street. A 1 km horizontal longbore being drilled.

DrainTech Solutions innovative approach with latest high pressure cutting technology DrainTech Solutions undertook a series of projects in Sydney on behalf of its client to restore flow to pipes located under a busy pedestrian access tunnel. The job was to excavate various DN 225 to 600 pipes which had been flooded with grout with an MPa rating of 80. The composition was deemed unusual and incredibly dense and would require a unique and strong piece of equipment to tackle the grout efficiently and effectively. With maintenance and ongoing training support from Pipe Core, DrainTech Solutions tested the Power Cutter PC200, a state-of-the-art milling robot from Innovative Sewer Technologies (I.S.T.). Its multiple functions including milling, high pressure water jet cutting, inspections, repairs, renovations and more. Most impressively it has an arm that can conduct endless rotations without stopping while the body of the unit remains incredibly stable which is vital when navigating deep inside a pipe. The knowledge they gained from the testing pivoted them away from the chisel milling tool, to the ultra-high pressure water jet attachment that was able to shatter and blast apart grout with a pressure of up to 2500 bar, making much lighter and faster work of the job. 14 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022
This unique attachment connected to the PC200 saved time, potential damage to cutting heads and air motors, prevented excessive wear and tear caused by grinding, and eliminated the need to dig. I.S.T. Innovative Sewer Technologies GmbH.

REGION REVIEW
Water upgrades and renewal projects a priority for SA In the past year, there have been significant upgrades throughout South Australia to improve water security and accelerate the economy.
I
n February 2022, SA Water began a major upgrade of the Morgan to Whyalla pipeline. This renewal is part of SA Water’s four-year, $1.6 billion program to sustain and enhance its water network. SA Water has also finalised the location of a new desalinisation plant at Billy Lights Point and commenced major water main upgrades across several regional hubs. Elsewhere, works on the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is a 10.5 km north-south corridor have commenced and is expected to be completed by 2030.
16 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022
New water mains for regional SA Water main upgrades are taking place across regional South Australia as part of the state’s four-year, $155 million investment in its management program. Works are scheduled to take place in major regional hubs including Gawler, Loxton, Port Lincoln and Port Pirie. All will receive a share of around 47,000 m in new water main, set to be installed over the next 12 months. SA Water General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said the program builds on the 31,000 m of water main
upgraded across regional areas during 2020-21. “Improving our services isn’t just about delivering good quality drinking water, it’s about maintaining the system that delivers it, to reduce the frequency of water main leaks and breaks and their potential impact on our customers,” she said. The water main upgrades will ensure local residents and businesses can continue to access water services, sustaining wellbeing and economic growth. Enabling works underway on T2D Project
REGION REVIEW
Works have commenced on the final piece of the most significant infrastructure project in South Australia. The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is a 10.5 km north-south corridor that will complete the 78 km non-stop connection between Gawler and Old Noarlunga. Jointly funded by the Australian and SA Governments, the project is estimated to reach $9.9 billion. A hybrid option will be used to deliver the project, using a combination of tunnels, lowered and ground-level motorways, as well as overpasses and underpasses at key intersections. Stage One is construction of the Southern Tunnel between Anzac Highway and Darlington, and Stage Two will be the Airport Link and Northern Tunnel between the River Torrens and Anzac Highway. When complete, around 60 per cent of the T2D Project will be comprised of underground tunnels. SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the T2D
project will support more than 4,500 jobs. SA Water’s new desalination plant SA Water has selected Billy Lights Point as the new preferred location for a planned desalination plant. The plant will provide a reliable, climateindependent drinking water source to supplement existing groundwater supplies. It will prove critical to maintaining a longterm supply of safe, clean drinking water for 35,000 SA Water customers on the Eyre Peninsula. The plant will draw a total of up to 11.3 GL of water from the ocean each year. It will initially be designed to a four GL per year capacity, with marine and underground pipework designed to provide for an additional four GL per year. Subject to required approvals, first water is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023. SA Water to begin 34 km renewal project SA Water is setting up for the major renewal
of 34km of pipeline from Morgan to Whyalla, in South Australia. Renewal of the Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline includes sections in Burra, Lindley and Winninowie, and is part of the utility’s $62 million investment in regional water infrastructure. The pipeline has serviced the community with drinking water from the Morgan Water Treatment Plant in Riverland for early 80 years. SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said new sections of pipeline will be constructed in parallel to the existing infrastructure, to minimise interruption to customers’ water supply. “Our Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline provides safe, clean water to customers throughout regional South Australia and many large businesses depend on a reliable supply to enable their processes, and by duplicating sections of the pipeline, we’re able to keep the water flowing during this important project,” Lewry said.
South Australia has had an eventful past 12 months in the trenchless industry.

COVER STORY
The selection of screens for hydrovac slurry treatment Hydrovac excavation is a non-destructive, precise, non-mechanical process that uses pressurised water and an industrial strength vacuum to simultaneously excavate and evacuate soil. GN Solids designs and manufactures hydrovac slurry processing systems, known as a Slurry Dewatering System.
T
he slurry processing solution is to use liquid and solids separation equipment to treat soil, soup or slurry generated from hydrovac, excavation or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects, and produces reusable material for construction and discharge clean water. Normally, the slurry is contaminant-free and comes from physical utility location in public right of ways, and directional drilling for placement of underground pipes, utilities, or other private property construction. The slurry is of different particle sizes, and is processed by a classifying vibrating screen, dewatering fine shaker, and a dewatering decanter centrifuge. For various applications on solid liquid separation, the concept is the same. Separate the mixed fluid to different class, with the easiest practical way is by particle size. The most commonly used method for separating particles based on particle size is screening.
The truck tipping off into steel bars which keeps the big stones out.
With GN’s new product line, it is able to separate the debris.
Probability of separation Probability of separation is the process of particles reporting to the screen apertures or GN is experienced in designing and manufacturing the whole hydrovac slurry treatment system.

openings, and passing through if the particle size is less than the aperture. Screen / screening equipment selection Screen selection is based on the overall screen area required to achieve efficient screening at a given mass throughput capacity. Length of screen is important for ensuring the number of trials needed to achieve the desired mass throughput capacity and to provide sufficient screen underflow capacity. Width is important for ensuring proper bed depth so as to provide sufficient stratification. The length of the screen should be at least two times the width for good practical design. In GN Solids’ hydrovac slurry dewatering system, the very first step is through a steel plate wire mesh, which is holding unexpected big stones. It will then drop to a classification vibrating screen. With different purposes, the screen wiring dimension can be very different, and the experience from the customer themselves matters as well. With intention to make a good benchmark, GN Solids’ classification vibrating screen comes with a huck revit wallboard. Through finite element analysis, the structure has been well optimised. The plane design of the whole screen surface is more conducive to screening and grading materials and maximises the effective screening area of the screen surface. With design of a positive inclination angle, and the installation angle being 4 degrees
Double deck shaker for further treatment.
adjustable, it is suitable for the requirements of different process materials. Following the first step screening, the mixture will then be transferred to the next step - GN Solids linear motion shale shaker. It is a product more popular in oil gas application, or HDD mud recyclers, yet it fits this step very well. GN recommends the double deck shaker, as it eventually separates the particles step-by-step, and will save money on less consumable parts. The last step is hydrocyclones. This where a dewatering screen will be put underneath to dewater the discharge from cones, and to
improve the cyclone efficiency. Conclusion The hyodrovac slurry treatment system has four types of screens. The first is big mesh bars to hold large stones. The second includes coarse classifying screen. Third screen is having double deck shaker screen, and the fourth is a cyclone discharge dewatering screen.

SOFTWARE
Software for conduit inspection: a buyer’s guide By Chris McAleenan, CEO, PipeTech Auscodes When surveying the competitive market for pipeline condition assessment software, it’s important to identify the features that are important to each specific buyer. This buying guide from PipeTech Auscodes, a new cross pacific partnership between experienced Australian and US companies, highlights three key criteria for consideration when undertaking this process. the new code system so that they can make better asset management decisions. It’s critical that whatever software you select adheres to the WSA standard and is capable of producing accurate scoring reports. PipeTech Auscodes is the first fully compliant software to meet this standard, and the partnership behind this software is committed to staying up-to-date with future WSAA updates.
A screenshot of PipeTech Auscodes’ pipe condition assessment software.
I
s it time to upgrade your conduit inspection software? Many asset owners and contractors are still using software that was released more than 10 years ago and are facing end-of-life notifications from their vendors. Others are evaluating new software to meet the needs of the Water Services Association of Australia’s (WSAA) newly released 2020 v4.1 reporting code. This guide is intended to help you make the most of your software investment. The good news is that there are now more choices than ever before, including the just-launched PipeTech Auscodes conduit inspection software. The software is the result of a collaborative effort between Peter Slingsby, an Australian water-industry veteran, and PipeTech Software, a company that has been creating inspection software for over 20 years. Evaluating software can be a daunting task. In Australia, we have faced limited options and high prices for many years. Now that there are more choices available, what criteria 20 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022
should you consider when making a decision? We surveyed experts who use conduit inspection software daily. And what follows are their top three recommendations. Speed of data entry Field crews have a demanding job, and time is money. “Less time with a reporting program means less time in the pipe and more metres at the end of the day,” says Bruce Barrie of Deetect Pty Ltd in Canberra, who uses PipeTech Auscodes to compile reports in the WSA 2020 v4.1 format. “Inputting the header and asset details are easy and the shortcuts, duplication and repetition of codes as the survey progresses are what makes this program a treat to use and an asset to my business,” he says. Accurate coding and scoring The WSA 2020 4.1 reporting codes have a revised scoring and grading system that is designed to better reflect the severity and impact of defects. Asset owners are adopting
Data quality and format A software program is only as good as the data it produces. When evaluating conduit inspection software, carefully consider what you, and your customers, need in terms of data output. High-quality video and easy to interpret PDF reports are a must. Bruce Barrie says he uses this as a competitive advantage. “My clients are very pleased with the reports and videos produced by PipeTech Auscodes,” he says. It’s also necessary to consider the structure of the raw data itself. For example, does the software you are evaluating allow custom folder and file names? Is there a flexible data export format that can be used in conjunction with other software platforms such as geographic information system (GIS)? While the criteria above are universal to everyone who uses conduit inspection software, each buyer will ultimately have additional features that are important to them. This is why it’s important to start a conversation with different software vendors early in your buying process and keep a list of which software products meet your specific needs. MICROTUNNELLING
Fighting against the elements: preplanning for success in Townsville Heading into the wet season in northern Queensland, Edge Underground was working against extreme heat and flash flooding on a microtunnelling project to complete three lines – with one under a major state highway.
F
ighting against the elements and upcoming holidays, planning played a major role in ensuring the success of the project, so that when the worst scenario occurred, Edge Underground could perform its best and get the job done on time. Edge Underground was subcontracted to complete three microtunnels in Townsville, partnering with Mendi Constructions, a well-known local business. The job required a 450DN, 500DN and 600DN concrete enveloper pipe to be installed – the small two pipes under one road, and the biggest and longest pipe under the Bruce Highway. Difficult weather conditions Stuart Harrison, Managing Director at Edge Underground, said going into the project, the team knew that there could be challenges due to the extreme heat, and timing meant that

Queensland was heading into the wet season, presenting the risk of flash flooding. The team was also aware that there was a learning curve for Mendi Constructions, as their crew had little experience with microtunnelling and needed a partner that could help them process what was important to ensure the best outcome for the project.
As the team was getting started on the project to install the 450DN pipe, the worstcase scenario happened, with three days of flash flooding stopping work before they were able to get momentum on the project. “The flash flooding really set the foundation for understanding the need to get the shaft prepared for all weather, and All pipes were installed within millimetres of the required grade.

assume and plan for the worst as that will definitely allow you to perform at your best,” Harrison says. “With the first shaft we had to make some compromises, and in this industry, whenever a compromise is made, it eventually catches up to you during the project. If it doesn’t catch up with you, you’re very lucky. “We don’t like to rely on luck to perform well, so we pre-plan and manage the risk in order to ultimately be able to provide a highend final product.” Harrison says the flooding made the job more complicated, and increased the scope of work and timeframe to complete it. However, with the lessons learned from line one, the team was able to compete the pilot and ream line two without problems. “The bore process was a total of two days of work, which was amazing considering the volume of material,” he says. “And like all the jobs we complete, the pipe was installed within millimetres of the required grade.” Tackling challenges As well as difficult weather conditions, the team was presented with delays from the Christmas break and changing ground conditions mid-bore.
Harrison says the timing to start bore three was in the lead up to the Christmas break, so there was going to be a number of days where work wouldn’t be taking place. “There was a concern that maybe we shouldn’t start before Christmas, but we felt we had the ability to get it done and that if we started on Wednesday, we could finish it by Thursday night. This would be a great outcome for a 600DN concrete enveloper pipe with a 800mm bore,” he says. “It did get a bit complicated when we launched on Wednesday as we found there was a change in ground conditions mid-bore. It went from hard consolidated to more alluvial, and the alluvial layer was allowing high water flow across the compacted clay – which wasn’t noted in the geotech. “However, with the AXIS laser guided boring system we can adapt the setup to best suit conditions, so we were able to readjust our setup and complete the pilot line on Wednesday, allowing us to start reaming Thursday morning. “While there were some delays out of our control during the ream, we completed the drill on Thursday night, and the project was finished well within the timeframes leading into Christmas.”
The biggest and longest pipe was installed under the Bruce Highway.

Bakton, the new TBM machine for Rob Carr, Western Australia In February 2022, Rob Carr Pty commenced construction on the Quinns Main Sewer Project for Water Corporation, a key Rob Carr client.
T
he project includes one of the longest drives carried out in WA. This project involves the construction of a 1.9 km wastewater pipeline with a diameter of 2.2 metres (m) through a combination of micro tunnelling and open trench construction. The northern corridor of the metropolitan area will benefit from the addition of this pipeline to the wastewater distribution system. The project has kicked off with the clearing of affected areas and the construction of access tracks. Rob Carr has considered protecting the habitat of endangered species and protecting fauna. To meet the prerequisites as per the Conservation Act 1950, a regular fauna handler/relocator was appointed. Over 10,000 bees were rescued from an area to be cleared at one of the locations close to a launch shaft. In March 2022, the company’s new AVN1800 tunnel bore machine arrived in Western Australia. A naming competition was held for the TBM, where several members of the community participated, and BAKTON was placed first with 63 per cent of the votes. The name was suggested by local resident Peter Sexton, to honour his father, Maurice Sexton, and grandfather, Bruce Baker. Both have been regarded as pioneers of artisian drilling in Western Australia, and the name serves as a tribute to their work. Bakton has been operational since May 2022. The AVN is on its route to its first receival shaft, which is at a depth of 13 metres. The first launch shaft was completed by mid-April 2022 and is located in the existing carpark of the North Metropolitan TAFE, Clarkson. To accommodate the TAFE’s students and personnel over the duration of the project, a new parking lot was built adjacent. The last shaft is located at Hall Road, on the other side of the Mitchell Freeway. This shaft is currently 50 per cent complete and will be 27 m deep when fully constructed. This is the deepest of the five shafts to be constructed. The shafts will be constructed using a 24 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022

combination of in situ concrete caisson, precast segments installed by underpinning and shotcrete depending on the geotechnical conditions encountered. The geotechnical conditions are expected to be a combination of sand and pinnacle limestone varying from hard to soft. The open trench section of sewer has reached 75 per cent of completion and is projected to be completed by mid-June. The job includes four drives ranging from 188 m to 637 m. The longest drive is curved
with a radius of 600 m and will pass under the Mitchell Freeway and the Joondalup Railway Line. The AVN1800 was selected for the project due to its ability to work in mixed ground conditions of both sand and hard limestone. The whole project is due to for completion in early 2023.

Adept leads the way with water and sewer upgrade at Thomas Embling Hospital Adept Civil Group is well underway with water and sewer main construction works at Thomas Embling Hospital. Using trenchless technology, the Melbourne-based company will upgrade the hospital’s entire sewer system. Adept will use its microtunnelling machine to install 250 metres of sewer.

It is currently undergoing a $349.6 million expansion, and these upgrades are being conducted on behalf of Forensicare, Victoria’s leading provider of mental healthcare. Shortly after the Andrews government announced the expansion plans for the hospital in 2021, Adept was awarded the sewer upgrade project. The company was chosen based on its experience carrying out similar projects, specifically those that require a high degree of consideration for community safety. Adept will use its microtunnelling machine to install 250 metres of sewer. This

installation process will involve constructing four maintenance chambers that are 10 metres in depth. The company will also install 1.6 kilometres of dual DN180 watermain in order to upgrade the water supply to service the entire site. Like many of Adept’s other projects, the company described the upgrade works as “high risk” and “extremely challenging”. In fact, a significant amount of technical consideration has gone into the project’s planning. According to the company’s business development manager, Quentin Powell, the equipment and machinery that are being used were chosen on the basis of minimising risk. “Microtunnelling is difficult at the best of times especially when drilling in hard rock in excess of 200 MPA,” Powell says. “The vermeer axis machine was suitable for this project as it provides a fully enclosed bore whilst boring, as the drilling rods are the similar diameter as the tri-cone boring head limiting the chance of collapsing. “Adept have been working closely with NSC Project Solutions, Aecom and Forensicare to deliver the project safely and efficiently.” Adept is a civil contractor that specialises in water and sewerage drainage pipelines, pump stations and associated services for Melbourne water boards and tier one Victorian contractors. It has worked across a number of projects in the state, including early works on the metro tunnel, the Seaford Road level
crossing removal, and the West Gate tunnel sewer relocation. Due to its industry expertise, Adept has a history of taking on some of the most challenging and risky projects; however, the company also has a reputation for being committed to safety. Adept makes safety a priority on every project it works on, and it is currently working towards a goal of zero workplace injuries. Adept provides thorough in-house training to all employees and engaging in careful site management strategies. Adept is currently an accredited contractor with Greater Western Water, Yarra Valley Water, South East Water and Melbourne Water. It is also a member of Civil Contractors Federation Victoria Branch (CCF VIC) and is fully accredited with Vicroads. For more information visit www.adeptcivilgroup.com.au

FINANCE
Three steps to trenchless asset funding PEF Commercial Finance knows too well about the importance of having a good finance broker and securing business asset funding, having served hundreds of companies and securing the best finance deals regardless of the size of clients’ business.
T
he Melbourne-based finance brokering service’s main focus is to provide hassle free business finance solutions to clients and secure approvals quickly and conveniently. Appreciating the importance of getting the deal secure for the client in a timely fashion, the first step they take is understanding and identifying the client’s needs. Finance Broker Theo Robotis has over 30 years’ experience in the financial service world and has been with PEF Commercial Finance for the last 10 years. Theo knows the challenges customers in the trenchless and resources industry face when it comes to securing asset funding. “Today’s business world has varying business structures,” he says. “They trade from sole traders, partnerships, companies, trading entities, trusts - all sorts of variances or combinations.” One of the key differences in dealing with PEF Commercial Finance is that they take all the hassle out of your application by coordinating, organising and compiling your documents for delivery along with any other required materials. They then arrange the final sign-up immediately so that you, the client, can enjoy use of your new business equipment or vehicle as soon as possible. The company strives to ensure business loans and finances are easy with their simple three step process. The first step is identifying the purchase, which includes pin-pointing the equipment or assets for which the client requires business finance or a loan for. “We work with the client to really understand who they are, and how they operate, so that we can narrow down which lending options or which financing solutions are going to be worthwhile,” Theo says. “This may be deciding on the exact make and model of the equipment, assets, cars or other types of vehicles, the approximate purchase or lease prices, the source of the equipment being the supplier. An evaluation of the equipment prepared by a valuer may also help.” The second step is to apply for pre-approval.
“We (at PEF Commercial Finance) obtain the purchase information from the client and based on our discussions to date, work out the best approach to the business loan and finance application.” “We may ask for preliminary summary of financials, depending on the goods and amounts to be financed,” Theo says. The third and final step - finalisation and settlement. “We may be able to obtain an approval for larger amounts which can come in useful for funding future purchases or leases or other business loan applications,” says Theo.
“We work towards streamlining it all for everybody and it is a big hurdle that we’ve got to get over because, as I see it, the banks are sometimes a bit detached from the reality of the small business owner, the guy on the street, or the guy on the building site. “So, we’ve got to put it to them, we have got to make them (the banks and lenders) comfortable around what they’re lending against, because that is the bank’s money, and they’ve got to make sure that it goes to the right hands at the right time.” At PEF Commercial Finance, another aspect of the service customers can expect is when
PEF Commerical Finance strives to ensure business loans and finances are easy with their simple three step process.
“Once approval is obtained, we will do the preparation work to compile all documentation and loan contracts for your approval and signature. We will take care of finalising the settlement and paying for the equipment or vehicles.” Trust is one of the key attributes PEF Commercial Finance has built its business on due to there being a lot of technical and financial information being passed across to the banks on behalf of clients. Theo stated this is a result of the us (PEF) knowing who the banks are that lend to these specific areas and knowing the products and how it’s applied to people’s businesses. “We deal with the largest and most reliable financiers, lenders, banks, and credit providers. We understand and implement the process on a daily basis through which we have regular dealings with decision makers,” he says.

When dealing with PEF Commercial Finance you can be assured that as your commercial finance broker, it will provide personalised, efficient and friendly service throughout the entire process from the initial consultation and application to settlement and finalisation. VACUUM & HYDRO EXCAVATION
Vacvator’s range of vacuum excavation trucks lead the way in NDD Australian manufacturing company Vacvator is undergoing significant expansions to meet the growing demands of the industrial, utility, municipal and resource sectors.
F
ounded in 2006 by Director Andrew Rowlands, and technical founder Denis Walker, Vacvator has grown from its humble beginnings to specialise in the manufacturing of high-quality vacuum excavation trucks. Based in Goulburn NSW, Vacvator’s units are now distributed nationwide to support the civil, industrial, utility, mining sectors and more. As one of the key players in the Australian vacuum excavation truck market, Vacvator now strives to provide “the most productive trucks on the market”. Vacvator models are manufactured using the latest technologies and the company prides itself on creating products that are durable, reliable, easy to operate and safe to use, resulting in market leading productivity and significant reduction in whole of life costs of the unit. The most popular units in recent years have been TMC40-160B and the TMC76-245B. The TMC40-160B is a 4000L truck and is
the smallest in the range. It is the simplest to operate, manoeuvre and maintain compared to the larger models, but still maintains Vacvator’s high levels of productivity and performance, a highly efficient cyclone system and 1600CFM of suction and up to 18-inch Hg vacuum. The TMC76-245B is an 8000L truck. Like the TMC40-160B model, it is efficient and versatile; however, it is more powerful, with 2450CFM of suction and up to 26-inch Hg vacuum. The unit is ideally suited to small operators and municipals. The TMC76-245B is one of the most popular models in the series. Over the past 12 months Vacvator have introduced two new combination units to support its product range. Firstly, the Duo Dry which delivers the cost saving option to excavate with high-pressure air to dislodge the soil matter to be deposited into the tank as dry material or traditionally high-pressure water. This unit is quickly gaining popularity in areas where the cost of disposing of contaminated
soil is becoming more and more expensive (approximately $180 per tonne). Secondly the Duo Jet is designed to deliver NDD and drain cleaning capabilities, this truck has been designed to offer high pressure water jetting at 250lpm/2200psi. Both units reattain the ability to traditionally NDD without damaging underground utilities and pipelines. To ensure the highest of standards, all Vacvator units incorporate an integrated CANbus system as a standard feature. The system not only makes Vacvator the market leader in operator integration with intuitive control systems, but it also incorporates safety features to protect the unit and more importantly ensure that the truck is safe to operate on and off the road. Vacvator’s primary goal is to ensure our units are both safe for the operator and profitable for the owner. Perhaps one of the greatest productivity benefits Vacvator has been its effective design and innovation around the airflow. The Over the last 12 months Vacvator have introduced two new combination units to support its product range.

combination of filter design, cyclones and the smart interaction between the major components means that the blower capacity is utilised to its full capacity. The resultant effect is a very efficient use of power allowing the truck to perform at an exceptional level, the design also means that blockages in most cases, never happen. Vacvator has long recognised that noise is one of the biggest concerns for vacuum truck owners, as its predominant working environment is in urban areas. Using the truck engine as its primary power source means that it does not need to run at high RPM to run the blower unit, this coupled with the vacuum blower selection and the blower muffler design means that all our trucks operate below 82 dBA. The lower overall dBA level has a positive benefit for the general public and other operations working in the surrounding environment, reducing their exposure to excessive noise. Using the truck engine to drive the unit as

opposed to an auxiliary engine also reduces running costs and start up times. The cost of servicing two engines itself is not the biggest cost for the truck, it is the compounded down time when the two engine servicing intervals
don’t line up resulting in underutilisation and higher overhead costs. A truck engine that is maintained by an authorised truck dealer, has less chance of failing than a stationary engine that randomly gets serviced and maintained. Vacvator has its own in-house quality, safety, and incident management system, with the company relentlessly ensuring its processes and procedures are followed during manufacturing to ensure quality and consistency of all its products. Despite the quality of its products, Vacvator has faced challenges with the industry expansion and a rapidly changing market. To continue to support its existing clients and meet their excavation needs, the company has had to undergo significant growth in recent years. There are plans currently underway to expand its Goulburn manufacturing facility. The facility is currently 1340 square metres of manufacturing space and is expected to increase by a further 1430 square metres incorporating a purposebuilt blasting and painting facility. The company has also had some recent additions to its management team. Following Denis retiring earlier this year, Con Alvanos was appointed as the new General Manager and Operations Manager. Con, who joined the organisation two years ago as the operations manager, now works closely with his senior management team to ensure Vacvator clients are supported and are consistently delivered highquality products. “I am so confident in the quality of our engineering, our craft people’s skills, and our attention to detail during manufacturing that we will warrant all Vacvator manufactured components for three years,” he says. “Interestingly the first Vacvator built is still in operation some 15 years later. If you are a dedicated vacuum excavation company, a civil contractor, a mining company, or a council and you need your equipment to work each time every time, then you need a Vacvator.” Con says Vacvator understands the challenges the industry faces and ensure its customers benefit from an easy-to-operate vac truck. “As an organisation we offer guaranteed turnaround time for support to our valued customers. From the time you call in to the time we get one of our team to help with your problem, we guarantee to call back within the hour,” he says. “Vacvator trucks are Australian made using Aussie ingenuity to combine superior quality and exceptional performance with green, safe technology.” For more information visit: www.vacvator.com.au JUNE 2022 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA 31

AISER is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of vacuum and jetting vehicles for water recycling, sewer, stormwater, hydraulic excavation, industrial and dry suction applications. Having partnered with Canberra-based NATEE for several years, in 2019, the company established a dedicated subsidiary in the region. Based out of Sydney and lead by National The Elegance 2.0 in operation in Sydney, NSW.
Area Manager Kristian Stamenkovic, KAISER’s Australasian operations have gone from strength to strength, culminating in its strongest year to date. Despite recent challenges affecting the market globally, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues, the manufacturer has maintained a consistent supply of machines for local operators.
Overcoming challenges As a company with a clear management and ownership structure as well as a long-term strategy, it was always clear to KAISER the best way to deal with these challenges was entrepreneurially and actively. Significantly increased inventories, in some cases a change in production methods and, above all, a substantial anticipation in truck procurement continue to guarantee short delivery times. These measurements led to consistent deliveries of vehicles to the Australian market and the securing of subsequent supply for 2023 and beyond. Vital partnerships Recently, KAISER has secured important partnerships, not only from a commercial perspective, but also from an operational standpoint. Leading trenchless technology and pipeline equipment supplier SECA has partnered with KAISER to provide servicing and spare parts for the company’s machines, complementing the existing relationship with NATEE. Wilmot Pipelining sees success in projects across NSW As of the end of 2021, Wilmot Pipelining successfully delivered the largest UV CIP liners ever installed in Australia. Wilmot has had a similarly busy year in 2022, with several projects underway and others completed, heralding in yet another year of impressive progress for the company.
Wilmot undertaking sewer relining in the Hunter Water, NSW.
T
he Hunter Water Sewer Relining project located in Newcastle, NSW, has made promising headway as of mid-May 2022. Wilmot Pipelining has completed several sewer relining projects for the water industry company. Its lining team utilised the Brandenburger BBS.8 Liner to install new UV maintenance hole liners on several sites. The Brandenburger BBS.8 was the first UV maintenance hole liner on the market which adapts top to the prevailing manhole geometry, making it the most time effective method of manhole rehabilitation. More success has similarly been seen in Muswellbrook, NSW, approximately 127km north-west of Newcastle. The Water Main Renewal Program, issued by the Muswellbrook Shire Council, included the rehabilitation of the Forbes Street, Lorne Street and Turanville Avenue reticulation mains. As of mid-May 2022, Wilmot has successfully rehabilitated 26 failing assets ranging from DN300 – DN900 pipes varying in length and distance from each access chamber. The project was completed in accordance with the established budget and within set time constraints, additionally managing to be completed with minimal disturbances to the residential community. The Brandenburger B22.5 Liners were installed on location to ensure the highest quality and connections.
38 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022
Likewise, in South West NSW stormwater rehabilitation and relining works are securely underway. Structural UV relining of up to 46 stormwater culverts is set to begin pit-to-pit across a total of seven suburbs in high density residential areas. Wilmot is aiming to have similar success in completing the project within minimal disturbances to residents as seen in Muswellbrook. One of the Wilmot lining crews have already completed a package of stormwater rehabilitations, pit builds and modifications. In 2004 founder of Wilmot Civil, Andrew Wilmot, began a role in the wastewater treatment sector. Keeping our waterways clean and pollutant free became a real passion for Andrew. There, as his understanding of the importance of keeping Australia’s waterways pollution free dawned on him, Wilmot began to think of what more he could do for the industry. It was while contracting pipe bursting to upgrade sewer mains across Australia in 2006, that Wilmot’s ambition to establish his own company specialising in trenchless technologies took root. In 2012, after continuing his work in civil construction and commercial plumbing and drainage, he established Wilmot Civil in 2012. The company officially kicked off in Newcastle, NSW, initially offering house service lining and small-scale civil pipeline construction as well as point line repairs. Wilmot Civil began working
on significantly larger scale projects for local councils and utilities in 2015 and began trading as Wilmot Pipelining shortly thereafter. While 90 per cent of projects the company was delivering were relining and pipe rehabilitation, the business expanded its offerings to the market so there could be a trenchless solution for every asset type and situation. In 2018, Wilmot Pipelining invested in UV cured-in-place (CIP) technology and have since established reliable rehabilitation service with this technology. As well as expanding into wastewater rehabilitation of maintenance holes, Wilmot has also expanded its trenchless offerings with investments in spiral wound and slip lining technologies. Accredited under the International Organisation for Standardisation (IS0), 9001 quality management systems, 14001 environmental management systems as well as 45,001 occupational health and safety systems, Wilmot conveys a clear commitment to quality products and customer service. Wilmot has experienced an upward trajectory of success since it was established, particularly over the last two years. With promising updates on a multitude of different projects across NSW and Australia, Wilmot’s continued success is no surprise.

The promise of PST Aussie Trenchless has been passionate about progressing future infrastructure opportunities and accomplishing superior outcomes since it was founded in 2014.
H
eadquartered in New South Wales, the company offers a range of unique products in Australia and overseas. Aussie Trenchless Director Chris Meredith and the team are committed to pioneering state-ofthe-art solutions and furthering business in the trenchless industry. As part of that innovation, the company offers a wide range of unique products both in Australia and internationally. Pipe segment technology (PST) is an innovative new lining system which offers a range of benefits including swift installation, construction from transparent material and suitability for live loads, such as culverts under road and rail networks. PST is one solution for pipe rehabilitation that is easy to build and quick to install. Aussie Trenchless’ pipe segment technology is a segmental pipe rehabilitation system specifically designed for traversable trunk sewers, stormwater culverts and maintenance holes. Pipe lining technologies such as PST have the capacity to substantially
increase the service life of pipes and is an ideal method for man-entry pipeline rehabilitation, particularly for gravity sewer mains. “The PST grouting process will treat external soil void issue as an inherent part of the rehabilitation process,” says Meredith. Aussie Trenchless has been working to trial the PST in maintenance holes as part of a pilot project in manhole rehabilitation. The goal is to monitor the performance of the PST when used for similar rehabilitation projects over time before rolling their maintenance hole refurbishment program out. While PST has not been used to rehabilitate a maintenance holes before, Aussie Trenchless has been the first to adapt and innovate on the technology. “What makes this PST unique is that you can access the maintenance hole and complete all work through its existing lid as well as seal all maintenance hole wall faults using a high flow cementitious grout,” says Meredith. “It is also possible to fill external voids in soil
matrix and seal the maintenance hole bench areas as the grout exfiltrates out through the maintenance hole walls.” PST lining panels are made of polypropylene material, providing a smooth surface with effective hydraulic performance capacities. The panels are lightweight, easy to install and ideal for positioning in confined and tight space, the product being designed to be suitable for all pipe types. Segment pipe rehabilitation technologies are recommended for sewers with complex or non-standard shapes. Additionally, the ring stiffness of PST can be enhanced or altered by attaching circumferential bars, making the product suitable for installing in sewers of various depths. This is possible due to PST being a nimble segmental lining system featuring a grouted annulus gap, making it versatile in tight access locations. For more information visit www.aussietrenchless.com

All-in-one delivery partner Servicing the needs of local councils, water authorities and pipeline infrastructure asset owners for over 85 years, Interflow has earned its position in the water industry by continually challenging the status quo. As an experienced Delivery Partner, the company provides end-to-end services for local councils and water authorities via its self-performed capabilities and network of trusted sub-contractors. From inception to completion, Interflow’s services encompass project planning, design, construction and maintenance across the water, wastewater, stormwater, and culvert segments. Innovation lies at the core of Interflow’s service offering. From proactive asset management to emergency repairs, the company is dedicated to developing bespoke solutions that drill to the heart of its customers’ problems; robust, sustainable solutions that will service the growing needs of the community for generations to come. Interflow said that since the company’s inception in 1936, its people have taken a proactive approach to understanding its customers’ needs. From metropolitan water authorities to remote local councils, the company works closely with its customers to develop tailored solutions that work for its customers and the community.
Effective and efficient asset management Interflow demonstrated a proclivity for innovation very early on. This was exemplified in the 90’s when the business pioneered trenchless pipeline rehabilitation. By saving the time and costs associated with excavation, trenchless technologies have quickly become the preferred construction methods of choice for local councils and water 42 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022

F authorities across Australia and New Zealand. The company recognises that asset owners have moved towards ‘trenchless tech’. Dig and replace methods, particularly in urban areas, can be disruptive, impacting residents, commuters and the environment with dust, noise, and a hefty site footprint. Trenchless technology can minimise
these impacts by reducing environmental disruption to a single point of entry, as well as minimise project time and costs. This presents valuable cost savings to local councils, who often look for the most efficient and effective ways to preserve their critical pipeline infrastructure, without compromising quality.

risks associated with excavation. It is well established that trenchless pipeline construction methods also reduce air and noise pollution, a fact that benefits the surrounding ecosystems of wildlife and residents alike. Bringing the community along on the journey Beyond the delivery of projects and environmental management, Interflow has the capacity to expertly manage all community engagement aspects of a project. To keep the community connected and informed, open communication with residents is fundamental. This includes providing regular updates, seeking permission to enter private property, and, where appropriate, responding to residents’ concerns. pipeline space. Doug Walker is one of the Civil Project Supervisors at TI and has been working with the business for about two years. He says the decision to expand into civil work was made because it offers a big opportunity for growth. “There was a lot of work going in council pipeline projects, watermain replacements, and building out pump stations, so we have invested and grown that part of the business
over the last few years,” Doug says. Part of that growth has seen TI recently add a brand-new Vermeer D8x12 HDD to its fleet of excavators and skid steers, which will be put to work on the smaller jobs that would usually be contracted out. “It’s been hard to contract out our small, local jobs lately, as the labour and appetite just isn’t there. So, we decided to invest in the business, bring in a machine, and train ourselves up so we could do the work ourselves,” he says. The Vermeer D8x12 HDD offers the strength of a large drill with the compact body and enhanced performance of a small drill. The D8x12 comes with straightforward controls, a narrow footprint and enhanced power with less sound disruption, and is ideal for small service installation, such as gas distribution, power, water, and telecommunication networks. Walker says that before the D8x12 is put to work, he and the team will finish their training on the drill, provided by Vermeer Australia. “We’ve organised five days of training on the new rig, to get us across how to best use it, and the safety features. Then we’ll be putting it to work first on under road boring work in the local area,” Walker says. “The Vermeer Australia team has been
great, and a special thanks to our rep Kevin and the Albury team here. They’ve really supported us in our first purchase, making sure the team is comfortable with the drill, and answering any questions we have. Once we put it to work and see how it performs, we may look at adding another one to our fleet in the future.” For more information visit: www.vermeeraustralia.com.au

hese projects have a high level of complexity dealing with train movements, public safety, confined spaces, and tight delivery timeframes. “S&Z find the challenge of the rail projects rewarding. We are required to install conduits for signalling and power as well as watermains for water and fire services,” says S&Z General Manager Jim Pound. “We never know what we will encounter there is always something that occurs to keep us on our toes.” S&Z installed over several kilometres

of signal upgrades on the Donnybrook to Shepparton line upgrade as the new and faster trains need the boom gates to be activated much earlier. This often involved getting into areas not accessible by any means other than by rail. S&Z has a variety of HDD equipment which allowed it to deliver its compact 4X HDD unit by rail. “Some of the areas where we were required to bore were environmentally sensitive and protected. This meant the only way to get to the bore locations was by the rail network. Our nibble machine was able to be transported by rail to the precise locations required without any impact on the environment at all,” Pound says. Many rail projects require work to be carried out under occupation these are small windows of time when the trains are prevented from running to allow the work to be delivered safely. Given the importance of S&Z’s rail network these are kept to a minimum and require contractors such as S&Z to ensure it completes the required works within the allotted time frames. Pound says if an unexpected issue is encountered a solution needs to be found as soon as possible to allow the works to be completed within the occupation period. Another challenge on railway station

upgrades is the volume of people who still rely on the trains as their mode of transport. Due to transport such as busses, cars, and taxis, the railway station is often the busiest place in a town or suburb and requires an extra level of organisation to ensure safe passage to all. “We are constantly aware of the public because no matter how many signs, barricades, or safety measures you put in place, there will always be someone who finds themselves in a restricted area. All our crew members are trained to keep
an eye on the public to make sure they aren’t going to put themselves in danger,” Pound says. Given the amount of funding the Victorian State Government has committed to the improvement of rail network, S&Z expects to play a role in delivering many more rail projects in the future.

New GRUNDODRILL in the spotlight at No-Dig Despite only being introduced to the Australasian market earlier this year, TRACTO’s new and adaptable range of GRUNDODRILLS are already shaking up the HDD market. The xCS series of machines are the culmination of years of detailed German engineering, and combine unparalleled power with innovative technology.
T
he arrival of these machines has been years, if not decades in the making, and represents a landmark step forward in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) engineering. TRACTO-TECHNIK’s products are constantly being refined based on end user feedback, and the new range of GRUNDODRILL fluid-assisted and rock drilling machines are the ultimate reflection of this ideology. Consisting of six machines with performance ratings between 60 and 280 kN, the rigs in the xCS range can be adapted to be used as a Jet Condition System (JCS) for excavating in conventional soils with normal rods, or as an All Condition System (ACS) using twin-tube rods to navigate through rock. The customisable and adaptable nature of the machines is the result of years of research and development at TRACTO’s headquarters in Lennestadt, Germany, where the machines are also manufactured, using best-in-class processes and materials, before being shipped around the world, including to Australia and New Zealand. Taking centre stage After making the more than 15,000 km journey from the manufacturing hub in Germany to Australia, one of the new GRUNDODRILLs

will take centre stage on TRACTO’s 54 m2 exhibition stand at No-Dig Down Under. Having the machine on display gives contractors the opportunity to see the rig and its features up close, as well as speak to the company’s team who provide clients with support and servicing capabilities for the life of the asset. TRACTO will also have a number of interactive installations on site, demonstrating how the machine functions and is controlled. This illustrates how the machines have been designed to keep the complex and unique demands of the HDD process front of mind,
making them adaptable, versatile and efficient. As a result of the modular design, the GRUNDODRILLs can be configured to the specifications or restrictions of the market in which they’re operating. This includes numerous options for customisation according to application and comfort. The majority of all rig functions are controlled via a centralised touch screen while integrated cameras give the user 360° visibility of the rig from the comfort of the refined cabin. This enables ergonomic conditions for the user, limits fatigue and frees them up to focus on the task at

hand: drilling. Remote-controlled drilling is also possible with the new machines, with operations conveniently controlled and monitored from outside the operator’s cabin using a specially designed remote-control unit. In combination with the intelligent cameras, this allows for the full control of the entire drilling rig. The 130JCS/ACS features a Cummins Tier V engine, equipped with variable torque and speed adjustment for maximum rotational performance and productivity. In addition, the machines are capable of fully automatic drilling operations, including drill rod exchange. The machines’ performance and customisation are also backed up by TRACTO’s range of high-quality mixing systems, meaning the machines can operate for longer periods without disruption. Digging in A number of contractors in the region are the first to use these new GRUNDODRILLS and are already reaping the benefits of the additional power and functionality. As with all TRACTO machines, they are also supported by the best servicing, spare parts and training the industry has become accustomed to from the company. The company considers itself “more than a
dealer” and has a goal to create and maintain meaningful and lasting relationships with its clients. This includes guiding customers through all stages of the product process, from purchase to training and after-sales support, as well as giving clients access to technical and engineering support in real time. “If you’re a drilling or construction contractor looking to improve efficiency and performance on the job site, visiting us at No-Dig is an opportunity to see these machines up close and personal,” says TRACTO Australia Managing Director Jeff Rose.
“There’s a handful of contractors who have already taken delivery of the new GRUNDODRILL. With stock available on the ground at our Queensland head office ready to be delivered, there are opportunities to join them. “Make sure you visit stand 50, meet our team and learn more about how this machine is shaking things up.”

In 1988, Michels entered the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) market, offering a safe, environmentally sound way to install utility lines in areas where traditional opentrench construction would not be practical
or feasible. Keeping with Michlels’ spirit for innovation, the trenchless team has grown and advanced with the industry, building a reputation for completing some of the world’s most challenging, significant installations and for continuing to expand the capabilities of its team and custom designed and fabricated equipment. Michels has completed more than 225 pilot-hole intersect HDD projects, drills in excess of 4700 metres, and become one of the world’s most experienced direct pipe contractors. In 2021, Michels completed a 4702 metre installation of an NPS-24 steel utility line, the likes of which had not previously been attempted at the 24-inch diameter in the world. Previously, Lake Sakakawea on the Missouri River in North Dakota had limited the ability to transport natural gas takeaway from the Bakken Formation in northwest North Dakota to pipeline interconnects to the southeast. As a result, the existing infrastructure was not sufficient to meet transportation needs for the natural gas produced during the crude oil extraction process. building hundreds of kilometres of pipeline around Lake Sakakawea or transporting liquid natural gas around the lake in tanker trucks, much of the natural gas was safely burned as a flare to prevent release of hydrocarbons directly into the atmosphere. Already transporting half of the natural gas produced in the Bakken region, WBI Energy, Inc. (WBI), a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc., contracted Michels 2021 to build the transmission pipeline and trenchless segments of its North Bakken Expansion Project. HDD was chosen as the most viable, yet still very challenging, method for the installation. Michels put its team to work studying the project and developing multiple plans to achieve the highest possibility for success with the most minimal chances for injuries or environmental issues. After about a month, reading was completed, and the hole was prepared to receive the long street of 24-inch pipe to seal the project. After two days, the pullback was successfully completed and Michels had, once again, proven the lengths can be pushed further than previously been done, contributing to the future of the trenchless industry. eaturing a two-speed thrust drive, the JT60 drill power provides operators with the performance needed to drill through a variety of soils on a diverse range of jobsites. “This power, combined with an innovative design, ensures increased project profitability for the end user,” Ditch Witch CEA Territory Manager Wayne Cox says. Featuring a Tier 3 engine, the JT60 offers contractors 60,000 pounds of thrust and 9000 foot/pounds of rotational torque. Drilling with a 200-horsepower diesel engine, the JT60 is also designed to deliver the power to bore through challenging underground obstacles, including rock and other hard, fractured soils. “Heavy-duty anchor systems provide the necessary stability required during drilling and back reaming to use the machines’ full thrust capabilities when navigating challenging underground conditions, keeping the drill operating efficiently and the bore path stable at all times,” Cox says. The power offered by the JT60 is just one of the reasons Matt and the team at Boremore Civil Group in Sydney chose the JT60 for their fleet. “We work on a lot of remote projects in varying locations where ground conditions can differ dependant on location,” says Matt.

“We needed a drill we knew we could take to site and would handle whatever conditions we threw at it.” Boremore Civil Group offer precision horizontal directional drilling (HDD) services throughout Australia. Working across all aspects of infrastructure including telecommunications, gas, electricity, water and sewer projects for major service providers. Matt and his team’s method of installation includes horizontal directional drilling and open cut trenching in all ground conditions. “This type of drilling ensures minimal disruption to the community and environment,” says Matt. “It’s the preferred way to install pipelines and other utilities, by drilling under roadways, rivers and mountainous regions we can use less equipment and lower sites costs. “To do this we needed a reliable machine that’s not only fit for purpose but takes in to consideration operator comfort given our team can be in the machine for lengthy periods of time in quite isolated locations.” The cab of the JT60 is climate-controlled, and features intuitive controls, an ergonomic seat, colour LCD engine display, an excellent view of all drill functions, and easy to operate intuitive carve mode reducing operator fatigue. Featuring plenty of power and a rugged, reliable undercarriage, the JT60 Horizontal Directional Drill delivers the powerful combination operators need to get more done. The onboard, enclosed 150-gpm (560-I/min) fluid pump ensures productive drilling at greater
distances, and the flow rate can be adjusted simultaneously with thrust/pullback and rotation. The automated pipe-loading system fitted to the JT60 is designed to save contractors time and money. While the double rack-and-pinion thrust drive is field-proven and designed to push/pull through the long, tough bores. The two-speed thrust drive motor also provides exceptional low-speed drilling control as well as the high speeds necessary for rapidly loading drill pipe. Boremore Civil Group was formed by Matt when he was just 20 years of age, building the business from the ground up. To this day Matt is still very hands on in the family business and is joined by his wife Bree, who handles the administration while he handles the project planning and plant operation for each project. Matt and the team at Boremore Civil Group recently completed a job at the Mt Selywn Snowfields in Southern NSW where, as part of the sites rebuild after the fires in 2019, they are installing 2x140mm of power conduit and 1 x 63mm of communication conduit. The ground conditions have been extremely challenging with the rock in excess of 250mpa. “It’s been a challenging but really rewarding project for our team to be part of,” Matt says. “Seeing the devastation caused by the fires was horrible but knowing we are helping restore power to the site and assist in bringing the ski fields back to life, encourage tourism back into the area, has been really satisfying.” Having owned a Ditch Witch AT30 for a

The two drills are complimented by a FM25, 400GPM recycling system and two large capacity vacuum units. “This was the first job we used the Ditch Witch JT60 for and it handled the conditions really well,” Matt says. “The project at Mt Selwyn presented a lot of challenges from the extreme temperatures to the tight timeframe required to have all the conduit laid for the site to be up and running for the 2022 ski season. “As part of the project we also installed additional conduit, allowing for future upgrades or mains failure. By installing the infrastructure underground this time we can also hopefully eliminate or minimise the damages should another natural disaster occur in the future.” With a powerful combination of rugged reliability and proven intuition, the JT60 is here to work more efficiently with less downtime.
The JT60 is just one of the reasons the team at Boremore Civil Group in Sydney chose the JT60 for its fleet.

Veolia: Leading the way in ecological transformation Veolia controls all the stages of the water cycle and can meet the many challenges of local authorities and industrial customers. By providing a comprehensive service offering that caters to all aspects of network management while minimising impacts to the environment, the company has committed to accelerating the development of new solutions with ecological transformation at its core.

V
eolia’s water division comprises over 830 employees across Australia and New Zealand. Chief Operating Officer for Water Daniel Spiller says ecological transformation is at the core of the company’s modus operandi. “We believe there is a global climate emergency, and that it is the responsibility of companies such as ours to lead the way in practical solutions to that emergency. This is what we term in our mission statement as ecological transformation,” says Spiller. “Within the water space, there is a real challenge of an ageing asset base, with many pipes constructed in the early 20th century now reaching the end of their service life. From our perspective, there is a real element of ecological transformation in getting the most out of those assets and sustaining them for as long as we possibly can.” Veolia offers clients a full suite of services, from analysing the client’s product, to understanding their needs, assessing the infrastructure they have, then working through the lifecycle of the potential interventions to water infrastructure. Building off its experience in water management and infrastructure, Veolia secured a contract with Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) for its water main renewal program. GVW has a rolling program to replace

ageing infrastructure susceptible to ground movement and cracks leading to leaks. Water main replacement is an ongoing asset management program designed to ensure continuity of supply and a high level of service. The program is part of GVW’s five-year Price Plan outlined to the Essential Services Commission, with more than $11million spent upgrading water mains during the 2018 to 2023 period, replacing more than 25 km of ageing infrastructure. New water mains are being constructed

from a selection of modern pipe materials such as plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and ductile iron. HDPE in particular has greater reliability, is recyclable and is generally more eco-friendly. Veolia Project Manager (Network Services Victoria) Meedo Abbas says the company has been delivering its water renewal program to GVW since 2018 and has had a strong focus on using trenchless technology for projects. “One of the projects has been delivered through trenchless technology using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), pipe jacking, microtunnelling and slip lining,” Abbas says. “This was a very complex job involving a number of stakeholders and requiring permits and approvals to proceed. The job had been in the planning for a number of years.” Abbas says the water main being replaced by Veolia, located in Wandong on Rail Street, had previously recorded 10 bursts, two within the last three years. Veolia says one of the key challenges to address was due to the works involving crossing the railway line near the Wandong Railway Station. The rail line is the main line between Melbourne and Sydney, and VicTrack, VLine and ARTC had to endorse any designs and project management plans, adding to the complexity of the job. ARTC was also planning to upgrade the
HDD
bridge where the trains cross causing further challenges for Veolia and GVW’s approval process. However, after intensive liaising between all stakeholders and designers, Veolia successfully secured a final proposal with the acceptance of an offset pipeline. “The job involved using two types of trenchless technology – microtunnelling and slip lining technology to bore under the track lines,” Abbas says. “Totalling about 42 metres, we bored and installed a MSCL sleeve and slip line to the new HDPE water main inside it.” Abbas says by using HDD, slip lining and microtunnelling technology Veolia was able to minimise impact to the environment and surrounding area, something that is particularly important to the company as it pursues ecological transformation. “The reason Veolia is emphasising trenchless methodology for this program is to reduce environmental impact on native vegetation and waterways, and also to reduce the interruption for the customer and community,” he says. Daniel Hughes, General Manager of Planning and Assets at GVW, says that the complexity of the work meant that finding a provider able to deliver the project with minimal disruption was particularly important.
The slipline pipe installed as part of Veolia’s contract with Goulburn Valley Water.
“We needed a solution that would enable us to keep our customers in service while minimising impact to the local environment,” Hughes says. “We are pleased with the trenchless technology Veolia brought to the project, enabling us to achieve the goals we set. The open communication approach between our teams has contributed to that success.” In order for Veolia to safely undertake the water main work under the rail lines, it had to
use two forms of a track protection system to track the trains and monitor the movements of the tracks. This included manual surveying of the train tracks and using a new technology called Tiltmetres Monitoring. Tiltmetres are smart devices that can be connected to one or more gateways, communicating rail movement in real time to a central server. For the Wandong Railway Street project, the Tiltmetres were installed on the track every two metres with the data provided to the key stakeholders in real time, increasing at critical phases of the project. “As a result, we were able to safely and successfully complete the construction of the project, which took 30 days,” Abbas says. He added that conventional methods weren’t practical with this job as it would have caused unacceptable disruption to train schedules. “We were able to provide GVW with a more sustainable and a superior outcome, all whilst minimising disruption to the natural environment and the community,” he says.

Infrastructure sector growth and value Maxibor’s national business development manager David Turner provides insights into how horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design and delivery providers can help achieve growth and add value to the infrastructure sector through the next five years and beyond.
T
he Australian infrastructure sector is going through a significant growth and change phase as the world emerges post-Covid and refocuses on economic and environmental development. The HDD sector is well positioned to play a significant role in designing and delivering infrastructure projects that can be part of the economic recovery and provide climate change mitigation solutions. David Turner has spent several decades working in the trenchless industry. In his business development and HDD operational roles at Maxibor, Turner is very familiar with most of the major infrastructure projects requiring HDD that have been completed in recent years; those currently in progress; and those that will be designed and delivered across Australia over the next five years. Turner predicts exciting times ahead for the HDD sector from a growth and value perspective. He says, “Companies like Maxibor, which have a widely-recognised reputation for
Maxibor’s national business development manager David Turner.
the successful design and delivery of all sized HDD projects, have a wealth of knowledge that can be used at all project phases to add value and help optimise outcomes for all stakeholders.” Over the next five years, governments and private sector infrastructure asset owners are set to make unprecedented investment
in infrastructure projects. Free from Covid constraints and backed by economic support from Federal and state governments, it is important that the projects are designed and delivered in a manner that takes full advantage of the installation benefits that HDD can provide. At a project’s concept level, it is important that HDD expertise is part of the early discussions, as HDD involvement at this stage will bring greater understanding of the process and its benefits, plus innovative opportunities for the installation of the infrastructure. “Providers like Maxibor are already delivering larger diameter and long bores in excess of 2 km,” says Turner. “It is exciting that early connection with our HDD design expertise is increasingly sought out by asset owners, project consultants and design engineering consultancies to provide early input into projects to help identify and better inform early designs and project decisions.” Once a project moves to the expression of Maxibor’s Gallagher 660e maxi-rig, informally known as The Hulk, is the only electric maxi-rig in the HDD industry in Australia.

HDD
interest (EOI) stage where bidders need to progress design and construction methodology to a more detailed level, having the HDD design and delivery experience in the bid team can be pivotal to the success of the bid. One recent example is the Sydney Water Refresh Vaucluse to Diamond Bay project. Comdain worked closely with Maxibor and WSP to present Comdain’s winning bid for the design and delivery of this project, which included a 1.85 km pipeline. The cooperative approach of the bid team and the collaborative NEC4 procurement approach by Sydney Water is creating a project delivery framework which will optimise outcomes for all stakeholders on this showpiece major project. Maxibor now has one of the largest HDD maxi-rig fleets in Australia. This includes a Vermeer 330x500, American Auger 660, Gallagher 600 and a Gallagher 660e (The Hulk). Maxibor also has the four most powerful pumps in the HDD industry, with its two Gardner Denver PZ8s and two Gardner Denver PZ9s. The grunt of the rigs and pumps means that Maxibor can take on any length bore. “Project decisionmakers understanding the capabilities of the available HDD equipment is so important across the full project cycle – from concept,
design and delivery – as this helps to optimise the value of a project,” says Turner. Maxibor’s Gallagher 660e maxi-rig, informally known as The Hulk, is the only electric maxi-rig in the HDD industry in Australia. The electrified spread comes with its own substation and can drill up to 3.5 km in a single shot with a diameter up to 1.6 m. According to Stephen Loneragan, one of Australia’s leading HDD design engineers, “Electric spreads provide new design and delivery solutions in Australia, especially for complex capital city water and sewer or power and gas projects where setup, noise, emissions, congestion services and ground conditions all present challenges that need to be overcome.” There is a growing need for government and private sector funders of investment in infrastructure to meet Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) requirements. Both ESG and climate are at the top of funders’ lists in terms of risk mitigation, and they want to be able to demonstrate that they are investing in a way that optimises longer term sustainability outcomes for all stakeholders. In this context, trenchless technology, and more specifically HDD, can provide solutions that are compatible with critical
needs of funders, asset owners and the broader community. Installing infrastructure “down under” is an effective solution for Australia as the country faces the impact of climate change. Having telecommunications and electrical assets underground provides many obvious safety and environmental benefits – one need only look at the ravages of the more extreme weather conditions like the 2019-20 bushfires to see that having infrastructure securely installed at depth provides a significantly safe community. It also facilitates the recovery process as services can be more quickly restored. Maxibor’s chief executive Rodney O’Meley says the push for early cooperative involvement in projects and environmentally friendly delivery methods reflects the importance the industry is placing on the long-term picture. “If a project is designed well, its chances of successful delivery and longer-term value are much more likely to be better achieved. Investment in disaster resilient infrastructure needs to be seen not as an additional expense but as an opportunity to create shared value for businesses and society,” says O’Meley. Contractor proves value of trenchless in the top end While they have always presented social and environmental benefits over traditional forms of civil construction, it wasn’t that long ago that trenchless methods were a significantly more expensive option. However, this is no longer the case, as is being illustrated on a municipal subdivision housing estate project in Darwin, where Dig Hard Excavations found Smart Lock’s point repair system to be the most cost-effective solution when compared with a dig and replace drainage option.
O
perating out of Darwin, Northern Territory, for more than 25 years, Dig Hard Excavations is one of the regions leading civil hydraulics and drainage rehabilitation contractors. The company specialises in the rehabilitation of civil plumbing infrastructure and uses advanced no-dig lining technologies to achieve results which are affordable, environmentally friendly and extend the life of failing infrastructure. Dig Hard Excavations’ wealth of experience and knowledge has culminated on the first stage of a stormwater point repair project for a recently completed council residential estate which commenced in early April. Prior to rehabilitation, the company cleaned the pipelines, as well as conducting CCTV inspection and condition assessment.
Smart solution After calculating the cost of trenchless rehabilitation, the contractor concluded using Smart Lock Group’s point repair lining system would be a fraction of the price of traditional dig and replace methods, and was by far the most cost-effective option for the project. Smart Lock is designed to withstand the harshest of climates and conditions, making it perfect for the unforgiving Australian climate, including in the Top End. The technology produces a cost-effective permanent solution for the repair of underground pipes, without the need for digging, by combining the proven technologies of fiberglass and resin with a mechanical stainless steel sleeve. This combination produces a very strong structural repair that provides form, structural integrity and strength back to the host pipe,
preventing any further infiltration and the possibility of potential tree root growth. The resulting point repair is permanent and returns the asset back to 100 year life expectancy. Smart Lock also has a smooth interior and tapered transitional ends, improving flow capacity and overall pipeline performance, along with providing exceptional corrosion and abrasion resistance. Rehabilitation underway Works started are taking place during the Territory’s dry season, which extends May to the end of October. The cooler weather – the average temperature is 21-32C, with humidity at around 60-65 per cent – has aided in the installation process, with as few as four people required on site to complete the installations. By the time the project is completed the Dig Hard Excavations on site at the residential estate, completing the rehabilitation.

contractor will have installed up to 100 repairs on sections of defective pipeline, varying in size from 375 to 600 mm. Less disruptions One of the biggest benefits of using Smart Lock has been the removal of costs associated
with re-instating road and existing concrete infrastructure where the project is taking place. The technology can be installed in a reduced site footprint, with rehabilitation only requiring access to stormwater pits. The use of trenchless technology is greatly minimising the impact of the project on the
surrounding faura, fauna, soil erosion and contamination. The use of Smart Lock creates minimal waste while using as few resources as possible, avoiding the excavation of trenches which can harm landscaping, trees, habitat, and wildlife. These outcomes illustrate that combining fit for purpose trenchless technology with a specialist contractor with proper training and experience in installation, pipe relining creates minimal waste while using as few resources as possible. he Quick-Lock system is a trenchless pipe repair solution that restores the integrity of pipes and seals out of groundwater. Comprised of a pneumatically expanding rehabilitation sleeve, Quick-Lock provides structural repair to the inside of pipelines, and is specifically designed for point repair, pre-lining stabilisation works, and as a liner end seal. What sets Quick-Lock apart from other rehabilitation systems, however, is its versatility and reliability. Not only is it suitable for all pipe materials, but its patented locking system and static capabilities allow

the sleeve to remain permanently in position and absorb the natural tectonic movements of the pipe. Other benefits include: • Fast, secure, and immediately effective repairs with minimal preparation. • Installed using no dig technology for minimal disruption. • Installed without the use of resins, chemicals or glue saving labour and curing time. • Suitable for sewer, storm water and even drinking water.
•E ffective and non-destructive solution to underground pipe damage. Common applications of the Quick-Lock system include cracked systems, root intrusions, leaks, pressure pipes and joint displacements. Manufactured using long-life materials that are designed to outlast almost any other repair solution, Quick-Lock has revolutionised sewer rehabilitation and is the ideal choice for long-term watertight lining projects. Another attractive feature of this new system is its simple installation process. The
REHAB & REPAIR
Quick-Lock system is transported to the repair spot by a CCTV crawler, and once it’s in position, the packer is inflated, and the machine’s locking device holds the sleeve firmly against the pipe, sealing the damage. The ring space between the liner and the old pipe is permanently sealed and the liner
end is protected against the mechanical influences of high-pressure cleaning. SECA also provides installation training to new clients. A number of Quick-Lock users, within Australia and worldwide, have expressed their satisfaction with SECA’s new product,

including James Pickup, the director of Australian Pipeline Management (PMA). His company uses SECA’s Quick-Lock systems for point repairs on pipelines, and he says that the efficient, easy installation of the system is the main reason APM continues to employ it. “We’ve used it successfully over various different contracts with a number of different clients, from councils to tier one projects to Transport NSW projects,” Pickup says. “A lot of the time, our projects are under traffic control – under ROLs – so repairs are very time sensitive. “With the Quick-Lock system, we can come in within a short window and do what they need doing, and no one will have ever known we were there.” Importantly, SECA’s latest innovation is also a more environmentally conscious technology. Quick-Lock uses heavy-gauge 316 stainless steel with infiltration abatement and an EPDM rubber gasket, sealing and stabilising damage by mechanical means. This removes the need to use chemicals during the repair process, making it safe to use in all types of environments. For more information visit www.seca.com.au

y providing inflow and infiltration (I/I) assessments, conducting inspections at hundreds of maintenance holes, pump stations and sewage treatment plant inlet structures, ISC Services has helped clients minimise their asset degradation and reduce operational asset costs. Most recently, its B-Tech Connections™, an innovative Pullable Mechanical Connection for HDPE, which has already been recently awarded the NASTT 2022 Abbott Innovative Product & Services Award. It is also up for Innovation recognition at No-Dig Down Under, UKSTT and ISTT. The B-Tech Connections™ have been specifically designed for trenchless technologies, and providing a quick, simple, high strength pipe-to-pipe mechanical connection. B-Tech Connections™ can be used for all pull-in applications including pipe bursting and/ or splitting, culvert replacement and micro tunnelling where HDPE is utilised. It can also be used in industries including telecom, electrical, de-water, by-passing, dredging, mining and even Petro-chemical. The innovation of pipe-to-pipe connection where the ID & OD remain the same, allows for 100 per cent retention of flow capacity while also maintaining a smooth external profile with no external obstructions, perfectly suitable for The B-Tech Connections™ have been specifically designed for trenchless technologies, and providing a quick, simple, high strength pipe-topipe mechanical connection.
tight enclosed pipe tracks. Bentink tells Trenchless Australasia that the B-Tech Connections™ can be pre-fused to any length of pipe and are available in threaded or push together connections that are made of 100 per cent HDPE, allowing them to be the exact specifications and material as the pipe. “Pre-fusion of B-Tech Connections™ prior to arrival on site reduces labour time required on site for connecting pipes and also reduces the need for specialised equipment or specialised training on site,” he says. “As the B-Tech Connections™ maintain the same external size, stacking of pipes for transport is more efficient and simpler than flanged ends.” Impressively, the mechanical connections for HDPE pipe are designed retain over 70 per cent normal pull-able strength, while retaining 95 per cent ductility of the pipe and 100 per cent flow capacity. Additionally, the connections feature leak-free O-ring seals and are resistant to corrosion and UV resistance of HDPE. No metallic components! The innovative design of the B-Tech Connections™ allows the rapid make up of threaded connections with two-to-three rotations, which results in quicker connections in the field. Such connections have been lab tested to hold up to 16,100 kg of pulling force. Likewise, water pressure testing of SDR9
at 12-inches achieved 375psi internal water pressure For pipes with larger diameter and lengths, the combination of threaded and push together fittings (all-in-one) allows for a 360° rotating connection for increased ease of connections of larger and longer pipes with no need to rotate the entire spool of large and long pipes simply turn the connection. “Either permanently locked or temporarily installed, connections are water-tight with a broad range of applications in trenchless and non-trenchless applications,” says Bentink. “Pull-ability of connections exceed 70 per cent of virgin pipe strength while retaining the normal flexibility of HDPE pipe. Connections can be applied to a wide range of pipe sizes and wall thicknesses. Transitions to other pipe materials and connection methods such as Flanges can also be provided to ease with compatibility issues.” In confined space applications, work crews save time and resources in comparison to when utilising other time-consuming connection techniques of bulky mechanical methods. In the time it takes to make up 1 bolt on a flange, B-Tech can be fully connected. This improves safety and drastically reduces time spent establishing connections and the equipment required to do so safely in restricted spaces. While the butt fusion of short segments of pipe is typically difficult and time consuming in confined spaces, the B-Tech Connections™ can be readily supplied in short spools to 914 mm or they can be pre-fused to any length of pipe to produce custom length spools, allowing for quick and easy installation no matter how tight the space. The long-life span and fast assembly times makes the B-Tech Connections™ method not only cost-effective but efficient for any HDPE projects or applications. Proving that ISC Services is continuing to help develop innovative technologies and solutions within the industry.

PROJECTS
kwik-ZIP gets the show on the road In early 2022, kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were used to complete a project for Highways England near Birmingham Airport, where they provided an efficient and seamless solution for bunding together HDPE pipe.
Kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were recently used on a project for Highways England on a M42 J6 diversion in Birmingham.
T
he kwik-ZIP HDXT Series is an anticorrosion, non-metallic casing spacer range for pipe-in-pipe (PIP) applications such as slip lining and cased crossings. Suitable for heavy-weight pipe materials including steel, ductile, mild steel cement lined (MSCL), glass reinforced epoxy (GRE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), it can be used on all diameters from 300 mm and beyond through the simple addition of multiple segments. Kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were recently
used on a project for Highways England on a M42 J6 diversion in Birmingham. UK-based infrastructure services and engineering company Amey used the spacers to facilitate the slip-lining of a four-pipe bundle. Junction 6 of the M42 connects the M42 motorway to the A45 to the east of Birmingham, where road users suffered significant delays and due to capacity constraints. The M42 J6 Diversion Project was designed to alleviate some of these delays experienced by motorists. The 4-pipe bundle consisted of 2 x DN 180
HDPE and 2 x DN450 HDPE pipes with a run length of 135 m. Kwik-Zip spacers were selected for this project due to their ability to secure the 4-pipe bundle together; their suitability to work with any pipe profile; and their design that protects and supports the bundle during the slip-lining process. Kwik-ZIP’s large range of spacers caters for a wide range of carrier and casing pipe size combinations, as well as providing flexibility to deal with project alterations. Kwik-ZIP spacers have no metal parts and are made from Kwik-ZIP’s engineered thermoplastic blend that is flexible, extremely tough and has a low coefficient of friction. Amey site manager on the M42 J6 Diversion Project Tim Lohoff commended kwik-ZIP for the intuitive design and ease of use of the spacers, which helped the project to come to fruition. “The spacer system was easily installed and was an excellent aid in slip lining the 4-pipe bundle through the tunnel, which we had installed prior to slip lining works – a truly excellent product,” says Lohoff.

The largest trenchless technology event in the Southern Hemisphere is back On 14–17 June 2022, the No-Dig Down Under Conference and Exhibition is coming to the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney.
A
fter nearly a three-year hiatus, NoDig is back! Following the success of the September 2019 event held in Melbourne and due to overwhelming support from sponsors, exhibitors and delegates, No-Dig Down Under is coming to Sydney, hosted at the ICC. No-Dig Down Under is the southern hemisphere’s only large-scale conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology, and the second largest of its kind in the world. Organised in partnership with the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT), the event will feature a world-class conference program, with three conference streams all focused on different aspects of the industry; training courses on trenchless methods presented by industry leaders; and an exhibition extending over 4,500 sqm and featuring exhibitors from all sectors. There will be three sponsored social functions, including the prestigious ASTT Gala Dinner and Awards Evening, providing attendees with networking opportunities in a variety of settings with industry professionals. This one-of-a-kind conference program will show you how leading utilities are using no-dig methods Asset owners play a vital role in the application of trenchless technology, which is why the conference program largely consists of Australia and New Zealand’s leading utility companies, operators, and municipalities, including Gold Coast City Council, Yarra Valley Water, APA Group, and Dial Before You Dig. The conference program also includes presentations on research and education into trenchless technologies. See the most recent innovations in trenchless technology at the exhibition The exhibition will feature the world’s 68 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA JUNE 2022
leading suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers of the latest trenchless solutions for the installation, rehabilitation, and location of underground infrastructure assets. Many of the exhibition stalls will be presenting practical demonstrations of their equipment, which is an important opportunity to see the company’s products in action. In 2019, more than 1,500 leaders and decision-makers passed through the exhibition, including delegates and trade visitors, so you know that what’s on exhibit is worth a visit! Take the time to get to know other industry changemakers at three different networking opportunities No-Dig Down Under will feature three social functions, providing networking opportunities in a variety of different atmospheres. On the evening of Tuesday 14 June, the exhibition will officially open with a ceremony at the ICC, sponsored by Herrenknecht. The opening is an opportunity to get a first glimpse of the exhibition hall and speak to exhibitors about their products and services before the general public the following morning. The Networking Reception, sponsored

by Vermeer, is a chance for delegates to relax and unwind after a few busy days at the convention. This years’ event will give attendees the opportunity to push the boat out on Captain Cook Cruise departing from King Street Wharf - easy walking distance from ICC Sydney. The final evening will feature the ASTT Gala Dinner and Awards Evening. This formal event – sponsored by Bothar Boring & Tunnelling – celebrates the Australasian trenchless industry’s achievements from the past two years. Full conference registrations include access to the function; otherwise, tickets can be purchased separately on the No-Dig Down Under website. Increase your knowledge of trenchless technology by attending a training course with No-Dig Down Under featuring two training courses covering horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and new installations. The training courses will be presented by international leaders of their respective fields. Originally developed by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), the ASTT has licensed the training courses and adapted the material for Australasian audiences. The courses are considered the global industry standard for trenchless technology education.
