nd just like that, it’s already March 2021 and the first edition of Trenchless Australasia is here. As I’m sure you have all heard others say, 2020 seemed like both the longest and shortest year of our lives, with so much going on around us but, at the same time, so much of life put on hold. It’s back to business now though and we’ve got some great content for you to read in this magazine, including a lengthy feature on tunnelling and microtunnelling, multiple in-depth articles on different aspects of relining and an informative feature on inspection and condition assessment highlighting some of the industry’s most prominent names. This year is already shaping up as a big one for the trenchless community, with preparations for No-Dig Down Under 2021 well underway. The exhibition hall is really selling fast now, and I strongly encourage anyone who wants to exhibit but has not made enquiries to contact our Business Development team as soon as possible to avoid missing out. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities are also available, and as with the exhibition spaces, those spots are getting snapped up now at a rapid pace as we move closer to the event – so any interested parties must move quicky. Building on the success of the 2019 incarnation in Melbourne, this year’s No-Dig is sure to be a massive event and will be buoyed by the ever-increasing interest in trenchless technology. For all event information please visit the official No-Dig Down Under event website at www.nodigdownunder.com A new beginning It would be remiss of me not to mention the significant changes going on behind the scenes at Trenchless Australasia. you would by now have heard, this magazine, along with the No-Dig Down Under event and another brand you may wbe familiar with, The Australian Pipeliner, have all been acquired by Prime Creative Media from Great Southern Press, effective 31 March 2021. Prime Creative Media is an extremely wellresourced publisher with extensive experience in the industry magazine and events space, and while some changes are inevitable with this kind of acquisition, Trenchless Australasia and No-Dig Down Under will be business as usual, supporting the trenchless industry as they always have. Additionally, with many of the team at Trenchless Australasia continuing with the magazine to its new home, you can expect to see several of the brand’s familiar faces around at both ASTT events and No-Dig later this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have worked on Trenchless Australasia and No-Dig Down Under in various capacities over the years under the Great Southern Press banner, whose hard work has turned these brands into world class entities. In particular, I would like to say thank you to Great Southern Press CEO Annie Ferguson. The publishing world can be a particularly difficult place to find your feet, and Annie’s strong track record of supporting staff and helping kickstart careers in the industry are qualities that can be all too rare in the professional world. Cheers to a strong year, and I hope we can see you all in person sometime soon. David Convery Managing Editor dconvery@gs-press.com.au

elcome to the first edition of Trenchless Australasia for 2021! Reflecting to the start of 2020 where much of the east side of our vast country was experiencing the devasting bushfires, we have commenced 2021 on a similar vein with the exception that they are now on the western side of Australia. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic that completely disrupted our way of life in 2020 and tragically claimed so many lives both here and abroad, appears to be stubbornly fighting our efforts to control it. The forecast for 2021 is better, but unpredictable, and much hope is being placed on a successful rollout of the vaccine. So, what does this mean for our industry in 2021? In my opinion, the supply delays in some sectors will continue as manufacturers and suppliers overseas adjust their businesses to account for the restrictions. Domestically, governments have loosened the purse strings and are fast-tracking many infrastructure projects to stimulate the economy and create employment. This will result in a rebalancing of the infrastructure spend between brownfield and greenfield projects. Sentiment within the private and public sectors is positive and, given the essential nature of the work our members are involved in, I believe 2021 will be a good year for the industry. After a disrupted 2020, the ASTT is in a good position to support the industry through education, guidelines and later in the year the No-Dig Down Under exhibition and conference in Sydney. Preparations for No-Dig are well progressed, and the organising committee and Great Southern Press are working closely together to ensure this event surpasses the many successful No-Digs of past years. You can find all the important information and key dates for the event at www.nodigdownunder.com The Call for Papers will close on 2 April 2021 - don’t forget to submit your abstracts
in time! Presenting a paper at No-Dig Down Under is a great way to celebrate the many interesting projects, new innovations and continual evolution of our industry. It is also an opportunity to meet your peers and establish long standing working relationships. I would encourage all members of the industry to attend this world class event! As many of you will know by now, Trenchless Australasia and No-Dig Down Under have both recently been acquired by Prime Creative Media. I am very thankful to Great Southern Press for the fantastic job they have done over the years making No-Dig and this magazine into world class brands, and I look forward to seeing this growth continued under the banner of Prime Creative Media. Over 2020, the special interest groups (SIGs) continued to work on their respective projects. The microtunnelling guideline is now complete, a lot of work has gone into the development of an industry carbon calculator and the relining SIG is working diligently on the current design issues faced in the industry. This work will continue throughout 2021. The ASTT Webinar Series, established in response to the pandemic, has replaced the Trenchless Forums and is gaining momentum and popularity. The webinar series has continued in 2021 with the first webinar in February being a joint presentation by Jason Linaker and Paul Keegan from kwik-ZIP entitled The Use of Spacers in Trenchless Pipe Installation – Supporting Efficiency and Compliance. The many projects the ASTT council is working on in the delivery of the strategic plan actions will continue in the background to improve member benefits, better support the industry and generally improve the way we interact and engage with the trenchless community. This has been done because it was felt that we were giving away too much information for no return and that these items should only be made available to the membership. Typically, these exclusive areas now include the Members Directory, access to Guidelines and Standards, minutes of the AGMs, webinar recordings and so on. The web address is unchanged. ASTT 30th Anniversary The ASTT will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year because it was on
11 March 1991 that the ASTT was formerly incorporated in accordance with the then Section 18 of the Corporations Act 1987. We started with just a modest handful of ISTT members registered in Australia back then to around 200 members today. We have also included New Zealand under our banner following the name change from Australian Society to Australasian Society on 28 June 1994. In the beginning we had to borrow funds to get started, but we are now debt free and have turned into a well-managed enterprise. Great Southern Press will be producing a 30th Anniversary booklet as they did when we achieved our 20th anniversary 10 years ago. All members will receive a complimentary copy of this publication when it is finalised. ASTT Council Nominations The current 2019-2020 ASTT Council structure is as indicated: Western Australia – Trevor Gosatti Victoria – Chris Frangos South Australia – Adam Russo Tasmania – Vacant New South Wales – Mathew Boyle Queensland – Ben Crosby Northern Territory – Vacant New Zealand – Blair Telfer Your Interim Councillors are: New South Wales – Sudipta Basu Victoria – Justin Shepherd The call for nominations to council was emailed to all ASTT Members on 14 January 2021 advising that should any financial member wish to nominate for one of these positions, then the name of the nominee plus a seconder MUST be received in writing to the Federal Secretary by 12 February 2021. If no nominations are received by the due date, then the past Council members will be reinstated for 2021/2022 ASTT AGM Notice is hereby given that the 29th combined Council and Annual General Meeting will be once again a virtual meeting and will be held via Zoom and on Thursday 25 March commencing at 1pm eastern standard daylight-saving time.

These fees were paid on 1 January 2021. It was pleasing to see that the number of members that renewed their memberships on time was an increase from last year, with the PayPal method now the most popular. For those who have still not paid, can you please expedite thus avoiding cancellation of your membership. Also, all members who changed their email or postal address are requested to let me know so that the ISTT and ASTT databases can be updated, these are the databases that among other things determine distribution of the magazines. And finally, for those that no longer work for the companies that pay your membership renewals, can you please let me know that you have left and who the replacement person is for your membership. ASTT Constitution changes One of the key actions from our Strategic Plan is “Membership Growth from 180 to 335 by 2024”. In order to facilitate this action, it was agreed that to encourage membership growth, there needs to be a shift in categories currently being offered to potential members. On 22 November 2020, council endorsed a proposal to introduce new membership categories. Following this endorsement, all members were sent an email on 23 November with a follow up reminder also sent on 14 December advising of the proposed changes to the Constitution and seeking feedback or comments by 18 December 2020. Great Southern Press also sent this information out to all subscribers of Trenchless Australasia. To date, no comments have been received and therefore these proposed changes will be tabled at the next AGM for endorsement. ASTT COUNCILLOR REPORTS
Queensland – Ben Crosby The last quarter in the trenchless industry has been busy both on a national and international level with clients continuing to rehabilitate and install new utility infrastructure, despite the new COVID-19 world. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, ASTT seminars have been placed on hold. In the meantime, the ASTT is holding monthly webinars, please visit the link: https://www.astt.com.au/webinars/. If you would like to speak at one of these in the future, please contact me at bencrosby@bamser.com.au. How about joining the ASTT as a corporate or individual member? The benefits are impressive and the access to the network makes it a very worthwhile proposition. Again, please contact me to discuss and gain more information.
New Zealand – Blair Telfer Tēnā koutou katoa and welcome to 2021. I trust you all had a relaxing break after what was a very stressful year and I’m sure you are all the same as I, hoping this to be a better year than 2020. COVID-19 restrictions allowing, I hope to organise more face-to-face forums again this year so keep an eye out for those, to both participate in and also to present. However, for those that may not be able to attend, the ASTT monthly webinar series continues, so again keep an eye out for those and please get in contact with me if you have a topic you wish to present on. These webinars are a great medium for reaching out to many people in our industry both here in NZ as well as Australia. Stay well, stay safe and I hope to see as many of you that I can throughout the year. Mā te wā.
New South Wales – Matthew Boyle With 2020 being a most extraordinary year, I, like many members, am pleased to see the end of it. With additional lockdown requirements and border closures, Christmas was particularly different from many others for our NSW members. Despite this, the promise of a new year holds promise of better times. For the NSW Government there is more than $107 billion dollars of infrastructure in the pipeline, so the state is looking to infrastructure to lead the COVID recovery. I hope all members grow and develop over the next 12 months and take advantage of this focus. I look forward to reconnecting to members this year, through webinars, Special Interest Groups and No-Dig Down Under. I wish you all a happy new year.
Western Australia – Trevor Gosatti As part of an ongoing commitment to future-proof Perth’s water supply, the Water Corporation of WA plans to continue to renew aged water pipes in the Perth suburbs of Mosman Park and North Fremantle. This work will improve the security and reliability of the water supply in the area for decades to come. Water Corporation is currently in the planning phase for the renewal of water pipes from west of Stirling Highway near Boundary Road in Mosman Park to Stirling Highway, south of Craig Street in North Fremantle. Construction is currently planned for 2021/22. To prepare for this work, design consultant GHD will visit the area between November 2020 and February 2021 to locate underground services and to assess ground conditions to assist with project planning and design. Mount Pleasant wastewater upgrades to include trenchless Water Corporation is proposing to construct new wastewater infrastructure to help cater for the continued growth and development within the City of Melville. This new infrastructure includes a new 3 km wastewater pipeline and upgrade to the existing Canning Beach Rose wasterwater pump station. Once installed, the newly upgraded pump station will have additional storage capacity and be equipped to safely divert the wastewater to be treated. The pump station will be upgraded on Canning Beach Road in Applecross. The new pipeline will be constructed from the pump station through Ardross and Mount Pleasant to an existing access chamber on the corner of Bedford Road and Central Avenue. As part of the planned project, it is proposed there will be tunnelling underneath Canning Highway to minimise traffic impacts and Water Corporation will work closely with Main Roads WA to ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently.
South Australia – Adam Russo SA Water began works to replace more than 1.5 km of water main in Wiliminton, as part of approximately 30,000 m of main being renewed around SA over the next year. The Wilmington works include the installation of new pipe along the Horrocks Highway and is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete. The four-year, statewide water main management program will cost $155 million.

Nu-Jet on for TasWater relining program Over the coming months, TasWater is carrying out an extensive sewer pipe relining program across the state to improve the network’s reliability. The sewer main renewals will update old pipes to reduce likelihood of breaks, blockages and bursts occurring throughout the network, which will result in improved reliability for customers. TasWater Capital Delivery Office Project Manager Kevin Douglas says the works will begin south of Hobart and will be carried out with the help of Tasmanian contractor, Nu-Jet. Following CCTV inspections of sewer lines, the team will work on approximately 16 km of pipe. The program forms part of TasWater’s 10-year, $1.8 billion capital works program that will provide vital upgrades and improvements to the utility’s infrastructure, and the sewer pipe renewal program will take approximately three years to complete.

NEWS FEATURE IN BRIEF
Lonsdale Street Sewer Upgrade complete After more than 18 months of planning and construction, the 900 m sewer under Lonsdale Street is now fully operational thanks to contractor Rob Carr. The upgrade is the second stage of City West Water’s four stage four-stage $80 million program to expand Melbourne CBD’s sewer system capacity, with the new pipe linking to a new sewer under Spencer Street that was installed as part of stage one in December 2018. Rob Carr installed the new 1.5 m diameter sewer pipe under Lonsdale Street using a 6.3 m, 16.3 t microtunnel boring machine (MTBM), which worked at depths ranging between 10 and 23 m. The MTBM had tunnelled 24 hours a day from March to September 2020 and encountered a variety of hard and soft ground conditions throughout. To support tunnelling activity, a 23 m deep launch shaft was excavated at William Street as well as two 10 m deep retrieval shafts at Elizabeth Street and Spencer Street. Each of the three shafts have now been filled in, closed and replaced with manholes. The next phase of works will include a new sewer along Elizabeth Street, with construction expected to begin in mid-2021.
Sydney Water turns to robotics Inspecting large wastewater pipes is a difficult task and, despite stringent safety requirements, remains one of the most dangerous tasks Sydney Water undertakes. Regardless of these difficulties, wastewater inspections are essential to provide the information required to budget and prioritise repairs and maintenance, which prevent leaks, blockages and overflows. Sydney Water says it has been working with its partner IP Pipes to keep its employees safe, searching for a technology-based solution that mitigates the need to send teams underground, and has found a way to check the state of pipes without answering them, the RACER. The RACER – Rapid Assessment Condition Evaluation Robot – is the result of recent developments in photogrammetry and sonar technology; it collects images and sonar data with a special free-floating camera, which are then converted into 360-degree vision and 2D view with sonar data. It allows Sydney Water to gather enough information for detailed engineering assessments, without having employees tramp through the underground network, allowing for optimal safety.

Business as usual in SA While not boasting the vast metropolises that dominate Victoria and New South Wales, there has been plenty of trenchless work on offer in South Australia to service the water infrastructure that supports the state’s growing population. Water upgrades SA Water has been hard at work maintaining the state’s water infrastructure, with a series of works getting underway in 2021. In February 2021, the utility began the replacement of more than 1,500 m of water main in Wilmington alongside contractor Fleurieu Civil with a five-week completion time. The works are part of approximately 30,000 m of main being renewed around SA throughout the next year, with the Wilmington works to include the installation of new pipe along the Horrocks Highway. SA Water GM Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry says PVC pipes will be used for the most of its water main replacement program. “While it’s difficult to completely stop water main leaks and breaks from occurring due to soil movement, weather and a variety of other environmental factors, we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and any potential impact on our customers,” she says. “With the new pipes having an approximate life span of up to 100 years, this project ensures 18 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
we can keep providing our customers in the Wilmington area with trusted water services for years to come, as well as limit the potential for water main breaks and leaks on a busy regional road. “It’s one of many water main replacements we’re undertaking as part of our four-year statewide $155 million water main management program, and our sustained investment ensures a reliable supply of safe, clean water for our customers.” In March, SA Water also began undertaking a range of water network modifications along Flagstaff Road in Darlington, to enable the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s (DIT) widening of a busy section of the southern suburbs’ key travel route. A fourth lane is being added to Flagstaff Road between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road, making it a permanent two-lane carriageway, and SA Water will be installing a cross-connection pipe from the northern end of Hyland Avenue and underneath Flagstaff Road. Ms Lewry says as with all its projects across
the state, the utility aims to work closely with other government agencies and councils to, where possible, align works and minimise any community impacts. “Our works will commence with the decommissioning of a nearby nine megalitre water storage tank, before we move on to the more complex pipe installation beneath Flagstaff Road,” she says. “The tank makes up one of 14 located along the foothills which serve a contingency storage role, should another part of the local network lose power for example. A detailed assessment determined the Darlington tank and supporting infrastructure can now be augmented with the new cross-connection being put in place to divert water to the remaining tanks. “Along with enabling a major road upgrade, the installation of a new connection pipe also ensures we can continue to provide a reliable supply of safe, clean water to our customers.” The project, being undertaken with a John Holland-Guidera O’Connor joint

venture, is expected to take around eight weeks to complete. Completed works SA Water completed an $11 million project to improve wastewater services in the state’s southeast in February 2021. A team of more than 50 people worked across the project, replacing a section of the 30 km pipe responsible for delivering wastewater from around 26,000 Mount Gambier residents and businesses to the region’s wastewater treatment facility. SA Water Senior Manager of Capital Delivery Peter Seltsikas says the 570 mm diameter concrete trunk main’s upgrade was staged over time to efficiently manage costs. “First constructed in the mid-1960s, more than 5 million L of sewage pass through this important wastewater main each day,” he says. “This is the last section of the large pipeline to be replaced and ensures our customers will continue to receive reliable wastewater services for years to come, while reducing the risk of potential leaks or breaks impacting the local environment. “We have worked closely with the Grant District Council and other community stakeholders throughout the duration of the works, and we’re excited to have the new wastewater pipeline now installed and delivering for our customers.” The continued upgrades to the wastewater pipeline have been designed to improve the operations at SA Water’s sewer pump station in Mount Gambier and reduce the likelihood of sewer blockages caused by non-flushable items like wet wipes, tissues and tampons.
Executive appointment In 2020, Jacqueline Guerin was announced as SA Water’s new Chief Financial Officer, bringing the organisation’s female representation in the senior leadership team up to 75 per cent. Ms Guerin brings more than 30 years of experience in senior financial roles within professional services, manufacturing, infrastructure and defence to her new position, and joined SA Water at the beginning of its 2020–24 regulatory period. SA Water says this appointment means three-quarters of individuals in the company’s senior leadership team are women, or five of seven. The company says 50 per cent of its non-executive board directors are female as well. Ms Guerin says there are wide reaching benefits to having better female representation at all levels, yet businesses need to continue thinking broadly when it comes to improving workplace diversity. “Having more women around the table is really important, but you also need people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, physical abilities and age groups,” she says. “From my own professional experience, a greater range of perspectives provides diversity of thought, leading to better ideas and decisions. In the water sector in particular – where I’ve worked for the past eight years – I am seeing improvements, with tailored industry development programs and policies, and outward support from industry leaders. “It’s terrific to know SA Water has a diversity and inclusion strategy which actively seeks opportunities for women

as well as new and emerging employees, and prioritises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and retention, and a flexible and inclusive workforce.” The other female members of SA Water’s Senior Leadership team are General Manager of Asset, Operations and Delivery Amanda Lewry; General Manager of Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson; General Manager of Governance, Planning and Regulation Anne Westley; and General Manager of Customer Delivery Kerry Rowlands. Interflow on board in SA In December 2020, the South Australian Interflow team secured a four-year package of works with SA Water. Sharing the news on social media, Interflow says its SA team will enjoy completing works for its own local community. “After 18 months of travelling Australia, performing a variety of different and challenging projects from the top of the Northern Territory to the bottom of Tasmania, our SA team can rest easy knowing that they’ve just secured four years of local work,” the company says. “Prioritising economic efficiency, environmental performance and social responsibility, SA Water has a long and proud history of delivering exceptional water and wastewater services to state residents. Working collaboratively with our customer, we will help SA Water to meet its goals while prioritising the wellbeing of residents.” Interflow says it will continue to share updates from the field as the program progresses.

Piper’s third ocean outfall McConnell Dowell’s MTBM ‘Piper’ and in-house tunnelling team have completed the tunnelling on another ocean outfall Direct Pipe® project in New Zealand. This time, it was on the west coast of the South Island for the Westland Milk Products Marine Outfall project where the team once again proved their capabilities.

he microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) was recently used for the Snells Algies Ocean Outfall project on NZ’s North Island, where the tunnelling team achieved a new world record of 2,021 m for the longest single drive by a Direct Pipe® MTBM earlier this year. After the Snells Algies Ocean Outfall drive was completed, the MTBM was quickly refurbished and mobilised with key tunnelling operations team members to the Westland Milk Project nearby to the Hokitika township on the west coast. McConnell Dowell Tunnelling and Underground Group Technical Director Justin Shepherd says the project team used world class experience with Direct Pipe to complete its 845 m tunnelling. The tunnelling was completed with the concurrent installation of the 832 m steel outer casing for the wastewater pipeline in just over a month, two weeks ahead of the construction program.
Project scope The scope of the recent ocean outfall works included constructing a 60 m long, 6 m wide and 7.5 m deep sheet piled MTBM launch trench, completing the 845 m microtunnel Direct Pipe drive and installing 832 m of steel casing pipe through the Direct Pipe thrusting technique that remains buried and submerged at the seaward end. Since the drive has been completed, the McConnell Dowell tunnelling team has sliplined the HDPE carrier pipeline into the steel casing, constructed the onshore deaeration chamber and completed onshore connections. To complete the outfall, ocean recovery of the MTBM followed by installation of the marine diffuser will take place. McConnell Dowell Westland Outfall Project Manager Stuart Anderson says the Direct Pipe tunnelling method was chosen to mitigate the impact of the work on the delicate coastal ecosystem in the area.

“This region of the South Island west coast is a region of beauty, ruggedness and remoteness,” he says. “It flourishes with land, air and marine based wildlife including the Little Blue Penguin, black swans, Hector Dolphins and orcas who have all been spotted keeping their watchful eye out on our works. “To retrieve Piper the MTBM, specialist excavation equipment sourced from Malaysia will be used to expose Piper under the seabed. A dive team will then disconnect and lift Piper from the sea floor and tow her to Greymouth Port where she will be lifted from the water.” Once completed, the project will be the first ocean outfall to take place on the west coast of the South Island. Mr Anderson says it will provide a new ocean discharge point for the treated wastewater from the Westland Milk Products facility, owed to the hard work of Piper and McConnell Dowell’s tunnelling team.

Decoding pipe choices for microtunnelling The right pipe must have sufficient strength for its installation and the permanent design loads, but it also needs to be a cost-effective design choice. Contractors and asset managers alike should ask themselves the question – are they selecting or inheriting the right pipe? CivilCode Managing Director John Bower can help with the answer.
A
long with founding and managing the software development company CivilCode, Mr Bower is also a consulting engineer and the Principal of Independent Civil Solutions. With extensive experience in the industry, Mr Bower offers expert advice for pipe selection that is second to none. MDG-S Mr Bower says the recent release of the Microtunnelling Design Guidelines for Sewers (MDG-S) has provided an opportunity to revisit some important design fundamentals. Plus, with the increasing capability of methods of installation often involving installation of relatively low stiffness pipe, it has become even more important to understand what strength of pipe is required for the permanent design loads. “Whether it is installing a steel pipe under a major highway or a GRP jacking or sleeve pipe in a microtunnel under a railway line, understanding the minimum required strength or stiffness of pipe is fundamental,” says Mr Bower. “Over the past few years, I have written a number of A comparative screenshot from FlxPipe for a conventional (trenched) installation.
For more information visit www.civilcode.com.au 22 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
papers on this subject, and I was very pleased to have been able to contribute to the MDG-S.” The MDG-S explains that most pipes can either be classified as rigid (such as concrete or clay) or flexible (such as PE, PVC, steel, GRP and polypropylene). For rigid pipes, the existing design standard provide equations for calculating the relevant permanent design loads for bores or trenchless installations. “The only difference between the loads for a conventional (trench or embankment) or a trenchless installation, is how the soil loads are calculated,” says Mr Bower. However, in recent times, more and more flexible pipes are being installed using microtunnelling, particularly for sewerage installations. “The relevant design standard for structural design of flexible pipes is AS/NZS 2566.1, although this standard does not provide guidance on bored or jacked installations. But, as stated in the MDG-S, the commentary to AS/NZS 2566.1 (Supp. 1) does provide details as to how soil loads can be calculated for “bores”. Other loads can then be determined using the other sections of AS/NZS 2566.1.” Mr Bower says, ultimately, the main differences between a trenchless and a conventional trenched installation are how
the soil loads should be calculated, what side support can be expected and how the design equations can and should be applied. “As explained in the MDG-S, effective grouting of the annulus can be an important part of the design to ensure side support from the native soil can be relied on,” he says. “Although not included in the MDG-S, it is also possible to carry out a design based on the pipe stiffness alone if the grouting is unlikely to be effective or cannot be completed for some reason.” FlxPipe Software “If you are thinking that this all sounds a bit complicated, fortunately CivilCode has made it easy for both designers and contractors alike,” says Mr Bower. In 2020, CivilCode released a trenchless design option for its FlxPipe design software, being an online application for structural design of buried flexible pipes to AS/NZS 2566.1. The new trenchless option allows for the design of both new pipe installations and pipeline renovation. With a company-wide aim to produce civil engineering design software to remove the drudgery of manual calculations while retaining transparency at all stages of the process, CivilCode will guide users every step of the way including training on design theory and using FlxPipe.

Edge Underground’s guide to safety For the pipeline installation sector, having the right equipment and using trenchless methods can help address safety issues and reduce the risk accidents or time and cost blowouts. At Edge Underground, safety begins with using the best equipment available – such as the AXIS guided boring system.

onsideration of safety issues is an integral part of the initial stage of the planning process for any construction project and helps to shape the tendering process. Equipment plays a key role in creating this safe worksite, as older machines will not have as many of the in-built safety mechanisms that newer equipment does. Edge Underground Managing Director Stuart Harrison says the Edge Underground team uses the best equipment available, including the AXIS guided boring system, as it is equipped with the best operator safety features of all the microtunnelling equipment in the market. “It’s designed with a Falling Object Protective System (FPOS) which is a safety enclosure that the operator sits inside, ensuring they aren’t exposed to the outside environment and protected from anything that might fall into the pit from above,” he says. “The FPOS is unique to the AXIS – no other microtunnelling machine available has a safety enclosure at all.” In addition to the FPOS, the AXIS has several noteworthy internal safety mechanisms to help keep personnel safe while completing the drill, including pressure gauges and strike alert.
“The pressure gauges, including a vacuum gauge at the rear of the machine, feed information to the operator to notify them of changes in ground pressure,” says Mr Harrison. “It’s important to be alerted to these pressure changes as it could signify contact with a trench, which could be housing live wires that weren’t located by Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) services or pre-project geotechnical surveys.” The AXIS’ in-built strike alert mechanism alerts the operator if the drill has encountered a power cable and the machine has become live. If this occurs, the operator can remain safely within the machine until the power source has been deactivated. Mr Harrison says the risks posed by changing in ground pressure are also further mitigated by the AXIS’ ability to retract and complete a pilot line. “This allows us to confirm the ground conditions and when we start drilling, any discrepancies that are picked up by the pressure gauges ensures the team can avoid any problems,” he says.
microtunnelling in a tender, rather than open cut, can further improve safety outcomes onsite. According to Safe Work Australia, excavation work is considered dangerous due to the risk of sudden excavation failures that limit the abilities of workers to escape if a collapse were to occur – with construction work being undertaken in or near shafts or trenches considered particularly high risk. This risk increases the deeper the shaft or trench, with those deeper than 1.5 m considered high risk. “While some trenchless methods such as microtunnelling and pipe jacking do require excavation of a shaft, the risks are much less than open cut,” says Mr Harrison. “Compared to open cut which requires long lengths of trenches to be dug along the length of the pipeline, there is much less excavation needed for the shaft and site supervision is contained to smaller areas. This not only reduces the number of man hours and therefore the incidence of accidents are less, but there is also a reduced risk of public interference.”
Going trenchless Mr Harrison says that specifying a trenchless method of pipeline installation such as

Rob Carr’s tunnelling team at the Sydney Airport tunnelling site.
Airport opts for underground construction While Sydney Airport is known for planes flying above ground, the upgrade of several of its bays will be undertaken in a much different manner. Going underground, Rob Carr has been contracted to facilitate the installation of a new refuelling line, using microtunnelling to do so.
S
ydney Airport is upgrading its Northern Pond Apron Bays 83, 84 and 85 from layover positions to serviced active bays, which will be capable of bussed arrivals and departures. To support the operations of active bays, the current infrastructure in these locations required an upgrade for refuelling capabilities, aircraft ground power and preconditioned air. To facilitate this refuelling ability, an existing 450 NB fuel feed feedline was extended from its existing termination point to a new junction pit at Bay 83, and Rob Carr was contracted to complete these complex installation works. A trenchless solution Rob Carr Construction Manager Andrew Scarr says the project included constructing a 523 m long DN900 reinforced concrete jacking pipeline using slurry pressure balanced microtunnelling to install it in three separate drives.
26 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
These drives were carried out predominately through saturated ground conditions consisting of silt, sand and fill. To complete the tunnelling and allow for the installation of the 450 NB fuel pipeline within the DN900 concrete pipe, Rob Carr also constructed in situ concrete caissons. “The project also included the construction of two 9 m ID caissons and two 4 m ID caissons, which provided a dry and safe working environment for the tunnelling crews to conduct operations,” says Mr Scarr. “Caissons were also chosen to minimise dewatering”. Mr Scarr says the construction of the second 4 m ID caisson was challenging due to its location, being adjacent to the runway, which required all plant and equipment within the obstacle limitation service; however, at this location it was only 1.4 m above ground level. To overcome this challenge, Rob Carr locally
lowered the ground level, reduced lift/pour heights on the caisson and only worked while the runway was closed from 11 pm-5 am and mobilising and demobilising required plant and equipment for each shift. Additionally, Mr Scarr says some challenging drilling conditions were encountered with large amounts of foreign material being encountered on the second line. “This was able to be dealt with due to the correct selection of microtunnel boring machines (MTBMs), a highly experienced MTBM operator and the perseverance of the MTBM crew enabling the line to be finally completed on line and level.” Mr Scarr adds that Rob Carr was also responsible for the management and treatment onsite of assets, the management and disposal of drilling water and the establishment of compounds. Working alongside Mr Scarr was Rob Carr Operations Manager Justin Croucamp, with the two men responsible for overseeing the overall construction program and management of the works. Additionally, Mr Scarr and Mr Croucamp provided support to both the project’s Project Engineer and Supervisor, being Jamie Leal and Damian Coward respectively. “Though the conditions were quite challenging, the project was completed successfully and well ahead of the contract schedule.”

TUNNELLING & MICROTUNNELLING
GM Microtunnelling is a Western Australian based trenchless technology expert specialising in sewer, water and drain works. General Manager Gary Miller’s father Jim purchased the first horizontal boring machine in WA decades ago and, ever since, the company has established itself as an integral part of the state’s trenchless industry.
L
ike father like son, both Gary and Jim recognised long ago the increasing demand for trenchless technologies in the underground infrastructure sector. By staying in front of the pack, GM Microtunnelling was quickly established as a name to know, winning contracts for various vital water and gas works. The company adapted and progressed as the technology continued to improve through the decades, and although Jim eventually retired, GM continues as a family business today with Gary’s son and grandson both also joining the team.
Unbeatable experience As both a primary or subcontractor, GM has installed pipelines beneath buildings, highways, railroads, runaways, rivers and environmentally sensitive areas. The company is capable of tunnelling through hard rock up to 660 m OD as well as cobbles, boulders, gravel, clay, sand and silts up to 800 mm OD, with its trenchless methods particularly suited to gravity sewer, water and drainage pipelines. GM often works together with project engineers to provide planning and technical advice on a project and can set itself apart from competitors owed to its extensive knowledge of ground conditions throughout WA. Along with its local knowledge, the company has expert proficiency in the operation of a large variety of tunnelling machines including the Grundomat range and Essig air tools, along with auger, ramming, pipe bursting, pilot and slurry microtunnelling tunnel boring machines (TBMs). With four complete systems in its fleet, GM can currently tunnel from 150 to 800 mm pipe to line and grade using PVC, concrete, VC, GRP and steel pipes. The company has its fingerprints over a large range of significant infrastructure projects in WA and is continuing to stay busy while the trenchless method of
construction gains a greater standing as the approach of choice for many asset owners. Some of GM’s works include the completed installation of a gravity sewer in Wungong Reach with a DN650 Hobas pipe after a 1,200 m bore at a depth of 6.5 m. At Heron Park in Harrisdale, GM completed a 450 m bore at a depth of 9 m for a gravity sewer using DN600 steel casing, while the company was able to bore 300 m at a depth of 5.5 m for a gravity sewer in Parkland Heights, Baldivis. GM is a fully accredited contractor operating in line with integrated management system standards ISO9001 2015, ISO14001:2015, ISO45001:2018 and is an approved Tier 3 Water Corporation supplier. Though it has already acquired a vast wealth of industry knowledge and experience, the company intends to lead the trenchless technology industry through its consistent embrace of new methods and innovative ideas. GM is regularly participating and encouraging the training of new personnel in the industry and places the upmost importance on its quality of service.

WOMEN IN TRENCHLESS
Interflow Training Content Manager Robyn Alderton.
Women in trenchless: A promising future lies ahead Historically, many women have been deterred from ‘male-dominated’ fields such as civil construction or water services due to underlying systemic cultural factors; however, the tides are fast changing. More women than ever are entering these fields with unbridled enthusiasm and passion for what they do – bringing with them potentially world-changing new ideas and innovations. Promising careers in construction In Australia, the construction and utility sectors have remained two of the most male-dominated major industries for more than 20 years. While the gender gaps in other industries are closing, these fields have unfortunately not seen the same progress. This means few organisations are reaping the benefits that female participation in their workforce can bring. Similarly, many women are not realising the bountiful opportunities 30 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
that can arise from a career in those fields. For many women, deterrents include a lack of family role models, stereotypes around the nature of ‘women’s work’, discouraging workplace cultures and structural problems within those organisations. A business that acknowledges the importance of equality in the civil construction and water industries is Interflow, a leading pipeline infrastructure company. The company’s success over its more than 80-year history has been underpinned by its
people, drawing from the strength and diversity of their ideas. Interflow recognises the societal, organisational and cultural benefits that female participation in the construction industry can bring, including increased employee engagement, productivity and profitability. Breaking down the barriers to entry One woman shaking up the industry is Interflow Training Content Manager Robyn Alderton. Ms Alderton is a strong advocate for equal opportunity and has championed women

in construction at various stages throughout her career. “I believe diversity is paramount to the long-term growth and prosperity of our industry,” she says. “How can a business expect to become (or remain) an industry leader if the organisation does not welcome new ideas, perspectives or innovations?” Ms Alderton is a firm believer that to accomplish transformation across a national industry, cultural change must first take place at an organisational level. One key way to accomplish this is through leadership and mentoring programs. Ms Alderton has acted as a mentor to a diverse range of workers over the course of her career. Through these programs, she has sought to advise budding young professionals on the opportunities a career in construction can bring and guide them to broaden their skills and horizons simultaneously. Paying particular attention to young women emerging into male-dominated fields, Ms Alderton hopes to play her part in initiating large-scale change. “Mentoring is a constructive way to attract and retain good people with ability and drive within a business,” she says. “All of the most valuable role models I’ve had throughout my career, whether they were male or female, acted with honesty, integrity, and led by example – I’m proud to do the same.” The power of education and leadership Bringing more than 13-years’ experience in the construction industry, Interflow HSE Business Partner Mivvi Turner has been on the other side, participating in a mentorship program run by the National Association of Women in Construction as a mentee in 2020. For her, the experience proved to be invaluable. “It was great to receive guidance and support from someone completely impartial who had experience within the same industry,” she says. “I could bounce ideas off them or work through professional concerns… their experience and advice has had a profound impact on my work.” There are proven benefits to professional mentoring, particularly for women in maledominated fields. These include identifying career goals, increasing confidence and opening doors to leadership. “As the industry is exposed to an increasing number of women and societal attitudes towards gender polarisation in construction begin to shift, we will surely see more women take the leap into civil construction and utilities,” says Ms Turner.
Shaping the future of the industry The more that organisations, industries and society break down the barriers preventing women from seeking employment in ‘male-dominated’ fields, the more genuine choice women will be able to exercise over how they participate in the workforce. Creating a path for gender equality in the construction industry is undoubtedly the best way forward, as it ensures employers have access to a complete and representative pool of talent to guarantee the best candidate is selected for the job. Ms Turner hopes her career as a HSE professional will help to pave the way for other ambitious and talented women to have a go in the construction industry.
“Upholding a strong culture of safety in any organisation is essential,” she says. “I do hope that my participation in this industry champions that fact, but also reinforces that organisational attitudes towards equality should be treated with the same rigor and respect as safety.” Ms Alderton shares her vision for the future of the civil engineering and construction industries. “The future is looking bright,” she says. “Together, we’re striving towards an equitable construction industry where women feel empowered to engage, fully participate and thrive.” For more information visit www.interflow.com.au

SECA solution from start to end With its trenchless inspection and condition assessment expertise, SECA offers end-to-end result for its customers by supplying a wide range of CCTV cameras. The relationship doesn’t end with supply, as SECA prides itself on also offering support and service for camera repairs across its products lifespans.
S
ewer Equipment Company (Aust) or SECA as more commonly known is one of the nation’s leading suppliers of equipment for cleaning, testing, inspection and rehabilitation of sewers and drains. In addition to offering efficient, quality distribution of sewer and plumbing equipment, SECA enhances its services by providing unmatched reporting capabilities to its CCTV customers via the industry leading WinCan Software. Along with SECA’s extensive product offerings, the company has a niche focus in CCTV inspection equipment – with products available from a range of brands. These brands and the subsequent equipment available include iPEK’s ROVION® and AGILIOS™ systems; Kepso’s QuickView AirHD and Jetscan systems; and WinCan Software. SECA also offers after-sale servicing and support for its cameras and systems, including upcoming Nationally Recognised CCTV courses, and has highly trained and experienced WinCan experts available for ongoing training and support. iPEK SECA supplies two leading iPEK products, the ROVION and AGILIOS systems. The user-friendly ROVION pipeline inspection system is a scalable tool with all components fully compatible with one another. Depending

on the combination of high-quality components, inspections using the ROVION system can be completed for pipe diameters ranging from 100-2,000 mm. With a wide selection of high-resolution inspection cameras – including axial cameras,
pan and tilt head cameras, cameras with fisheye lens or shaft inspection cameras with a rotation unit – ROVION offers a modular design that allows for growth and expansion, and the configuration flexibility to suit any operational needs.
INSPECTION & CONDITION ASSESSMENT
Similarly, iPEK’s latest generation AGILIOS system has been developed with the goal to perform inspections in all situations. SECA encourages those looking to lay the foundation for solid growth in the sewer inspection realm to invest in the versatile system, which consists of a coiler with a reinforced yet flexible push rod in 60 m or 100 m lengths, VC500 control panel and two different types of camera heads. With its operating range of up to 100 m, the AGILIOS system is suitable for inspections starting from DN50 mm and above. Its multi-functional VC500 control panel allows operators to carry out inspections according to predefined standards and, with a modular design, AGILIOS offers simple extension options if required. SECA National Technical Services Manager Colin Handley says in comparing the two, AGILIOS is a push system used in small diameter pipes with the ability to navigate around bends. “Conversely, the ROVION system is used in small to large diameter pipes that go between inspection openings. These are typically straight and cover a long distance up to 500 m,” he says. Kepso and Envirosight SECA offers the Kepso Cleverscan equipment and two Envirosight products QuickView AirHD and Jetscan, which are suited towards manhole, sewer and pipe inspections.
The Jetscan system attaches to the hose of a high-pressure water jetting truck to quickly understand a pipe’s condition.
“The Cleverscan is for inspecting manholes or shafts up to 10 m deep. It gives a very detailed analysis of the manhole with reporting capabilities,” says Mr Handley. By using five HD cameras and laser measurement, Cleverscan delivers a flat scan to capture images of every part of the manhole wall and a dense point cloud for 3D visualisation. Alternatively, the Quickview system is an instant and wireless HD view into any sewer with its high-powered zoom optics capable of assessing sewer lines rapidly – although Mr Handley says it is also targeted towards pipe inspections. “The Quickview is for inspecting medium to large diameter pipes – not just sewers – quickly, to determine if further inspections or cleaning are required. Typically, Quickview is not used to inspect manholes.” Similarly, Mr Handley says the Jetscan system offered by SECA is used to determine any possible further needs. “The Jetscan is a camera that attaches to the hose of a high-pressure water jetting truck that is used to clean pipes,” he says. “It is used to quickly get an understanding of a pipes condition, as well as whether or not more cleaning or further inspection is required.” WinCan Software SECA’s products are supported by WinCan software and also incorporate Wincan Web, which is a cloud-based system
allowing users to upload real time inspection data, images, video and reports. This content can then be shared to any other internet-connected device through a web browser or directly to any PC with Wincan VX software installed. With this level of connectivity, operators and constructors can transform the way onsite crews work with managers, engineers, clients and other personnel who may also be away from the office. Additionally, these prompt updates and speedy turnaround times mean contractors and utility operators face less delays and more informed collaboration. This software includes up-to-date training and subscription offers. CCTV training SECA is also launching nationally recognised CCTV courses in March 2021. The courses will be provided by Asset Training using SECA’s brand new facility, in which participants can undergo face-to-face training suited towards CCTV inspection personnel, operators and supervisors. With its CCTV product offerings alongside these servicing and training options, SECA is continuing to cement its position as an end-to-end supplier of trenchless inspection needs.

Old drains, new solutions By using the innovative Smart Lock repair system and relining patches, a plumbing maintenance specialist was able to reduce the cost of repair to a compromised drain by targeting damaged assets without impacting operations.
N
ew Plumbing Solutions (NPS) is a provider of plumbing maintenance and civil works for water and sewerage assets. Committed to investigating and investing in new, innovative technologies to solve old problems, NPS turned to Smart Lock Group for a solution when an asset was excessively impaired. Simple method, complex problem NPS Delivery Manager Damian Bradley says its client had a severely damaged drain next to a café in parkland gardens with significant trees and hard landscaping surrounding it, resulting in any rain event compromising the café and leaving the community unable to use the gardens. “Upon NPS’ inspection, while large sections of the drains were in good condition, there were a number of damaged sections identified which were causing the flooding. To avoid the
costly and disruptive “dig-and-repair” method of corrective works, NPS was able to propose a blended relining and Smart Lock solution.” Smart Lock is a simple method of repair, where drains undergo CCTV inspections to pinpoint the most damage impacted sections of a drain and pipe. The ‘no-dig’ patching solution allows for drains that are cracked, or those that allow root infiltration, to be repaired in a trenchless, non-disruptive manner. “The simple installation and efficient cure time of using Smart Lock means the job can be completed with minimum disruption,” says Mr Bradley. Project-specific solutions Smart Lock understands that one size does not fit all, which is why its team endeavour to always find a practical and suitable solution for varying project needs.
THE SMART WAY TO REPAIR PIPELINE FAULTS. Smart Lock is the biggest advancement in point repair technology, in more than 15 years.

“For NPS’ drain repair, our solution recommended for more than 20 Smart Locks to be installed and one section of pipe to be relined,” says Mr Bradley. “Given the issues were rectified only where there was specific damage, the solution provided a cost-effective outcome, and the trenchless technology solution utilised ensured there was no business interruption.” Mr Bradley says there are many measurable benefits of using Smart Lock systems compared to traditional repair methods, including that it is 35 per cent cheaper, it allows for 100 per cent of business continuity during works and the time onsite is reduced by 40 per cent.

The pressure applied during NDD is significantly quieter, which is highly beneficial anywhere but particularly in residential and metropolitan areas. Hydro excavation only requires the noise of the pump, which is relatively low when compared to using mechanical digging equipment. NDD also minimises the risk of damage when excavating near underground services like sewerage pipes, gas, water and telecommunication lines. This method of digging is extremely precise, leading to less critical importance to know the exact depth, location, direction, types and routes of existing pipes, cables and other underground infrastructure.
Jet Stream’s fleet of purpose-built vehicles are some of the most efficient in the market.
A client-first focus Jet Stream Drain Cleaning runs a modern fleet of purpose-built vehicles to carry out a range of drainage services throughout Victoria, including NDD, pipe clearing and cleaning, CCTV and vacuum loading.

The way to go in WA
A kwik-ZIP spacer installed on the water main project in WA to facilitate slip lining.
On a recent Perth project, kwik-ZIP® HD-30 spacers were installed to facilitate the slip lining of a DN125 PE water main into abandoned DN330 ST gas mains. With a primary objective of protecting the new water main during operations, a lower profile kwik-ZIP spacer model was used – demonstrating the manufacturer’s versatility.
k
wik-ZIP® General Manager Paul Jeffreys says the project involved abandoned gas mains with numerous internal protrusions, such as joints and welds. Because of this, there was significant concern that the PE carrier pipes for the new water main could be scratched and damaged during the slip lining operations. However, thanks to kwik-ZIP’s wide range of spacer models, the lower profile HD-30 spacer was used on the project to help ensure the water main was protected. Mr Jeffreys says the curved bow spring design ensures PE carrier pipes can easily ride over any protrusions and therefore be protected from damage. “HD spacers are also fitted with grip pads to prevent spacers slipping on the carrier pipe during installation,” he says. While HDPE pipe manufacturers generally advise that HDPE pipe needs to be de-rated in regard to its pressure if scratches exceed 10 per cent of the wall thickness of the pipe, kwik-ZIP’s spacers negate such need thanks to the inbuilt flexibility. “This highlights the benefit of using kwikZIP spacers for slip lining applications both inside an enveloper, and in open boreholes,” says Mr Jeffreys. “The runners ensure that the pipe can’t make contact with the enveloper during and after installation.” Wide range of products and capabilities kwik-ZIP’s large array of spacers caters for a wide range of inner diameter and outer diameter combinations as well as providing flexibility to deal with various project requirements and alterations.
44 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
Site Engineer Jo McAnulty for the WA water main project says the kwik-ZIP spacers were a great solution for slip lining, alleviating the risk of potential damage to the PE pipe during the process. “Thanks to PJ and the kwik-ZIP team for their excellent customer service, they were fantastic to deal with from start to finish and we’ll certainly keep them in mind for future projects.”
In addition to their proven success on this project, kwik-ZIP’s spacers are also often used on metro tunnel works, rail crossings and pipeline duplication projects thanks to the simple and efficient installation process that does not require any tools. kwik-ZIP spacers have no metal parts and are made from the company’s engineered thermoplastic blend that is flexible, extremely tough and has a low co-efficient of friction.

Trenchless rehabilitation using the Primus Line system requires only small construction pits.
Primus Line® advances in Australia Since its first installation in Australia more than four years ago, Primus Line® – a technology for the trenchless rehabilitation of pressure pipes – has turned into the preferred solution for pipe rehabilitations in sensitive and difficult-to-access areas.
I
t goes without saying that infrastructure for water supply will always be relevant. However, much of this infrastructure is ageing, with leaking or even shut down pipes underlining the necessity for renovation. Usually, these pipes are renewed or revitalised by dig-and-replace, but over the past few years, utilities worldwide are looking more and more for trenchless solutions. The advantages are clear: shorter installation times, fewer impacts on the environment and reduced costs. Primus Line® – engineered and manufactured in Germany – is one of these solutions, consisting of a flexible, aramid-reinforced liner and special developed end fittings. Since Sydney Water undertook its first Primus Line project four years ago, nearly a dozen have followed, along with the projects for other utilities, councils and mining companies throughout Australia. These include Urban Utilities, Hunter Water,
48 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
Unity Water and Shoalhaven City Council, to name just a few. Primus Line technology is currently the sole solution for the rehabilitation of pressure pipelines on Sydney Water’s list of products deemed to comply with pipeline rehabilitation. In cases of water spilling from damaged drinking water pipelines or sewage pressure lines in hard to access areas, such as beneath a creek, rapid response is essential. This is why some Australian pipeline operators already have Primus Line material on stock to present fast remedy in emergency cases, with Primus Line now found in even the most remote corners of Australia. In Cape Lambert, Western Australia, more than 1.5 km of drinking water pipelines have been rehabilitated using the product for Rio Tinto at a site of cultural heritage sensitivity. Other customers from the private sector, including Melbourne Airport, have already
profited from the German trenchless renewal system, but Primus Line is used for more than just the rehabilitation of potable water mains – the range of completed projects extends to sewage pressure pipes, recycled water or raw water mains as well. Moreover, the Primus Line has been used on projects deemed nearly impossible. Examples include a 3-in-1 solution for Hunter Water (three Primus Liners DN 450 installed in a DN 900 pipe) and a vertical pipeline of more than 100 m for Sydney Water. To plan and calculate the projects, Primus Line relies on its in-house engineering team that gets to work immediately from project start, ensuring the Primus Line technology is the right product to carry out the job quickly and efficiently.

Rangedale expands renewals division Since the establishment of Rangedale in 2003, the company has prided itself on being an innovative solution focused business. With its trenchless services continuously evolving, Rangedale has matched the rapidly growing pace by bringing on a new General Manager to the expanding renewals division.
F
ounded in 2003, Rangedale’s trenchless operations have evolved from jet cleaning and CCTV inspections to a vast array of sophisticated industrial services, offering advanced state of the art technology and equipment across the group – but the growth has not stopped there. Rangedale identified the opportunity to enter Australia’s asset rehabilitation and renewals sector, promoting technologies that offer authorities alternatives to the status quo. While cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technologies have been used for many years – traditionally by using water and steam to cure the liners – the technology has now evolved and CIPP liners can be cured using a UV light source instead. Expansion This advancement in CIPP technology increases speed of installation, strength of finished product, a larger bore size after lining resulting in a far increased flow capacity as well as a more risk adverse system when it comes to the safety and environmental aspects associated with the installation process. Now, with its new expansion of its rehabiliation and renewals division, Rangedale will employ advanced UV Cured CIPP technology in both underground pipelines and access chambers in situations where the authority requires a fully structural or intact lining solution.
50 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
In the past, access chambers that have been assessed as fully deteriorated whereby a protective or repair coating is not deemed suitable have often been renewed by slip lining the manhole or by total replacement. Now, not only can Rangedale’s UV cured CIPP liners be installed into pipelines, but the company will also be installing these structural liners vertically down access chambers. To do so, Rangedale will use 3D scanning technology to accurately profile the existing access chamber, then manufacture and install UV cured CIPP liners to fit the exact dimensions of the access chamber – offering cliental across Australia a unique and complete new service offering. The division will also consist of a range of other technologies suited to pipeline and access chamber renewals, including access to spiral wound lining technologies; specialised systems using protective or repair coatings; latest innovation rehabiliation property connections for reinstatement after relining; isolated spot repair systems; high powered robotics; and long-range cleaning and CCTV technology. Additionally, Rangedale will offer the service of its existing fleets to the renewal sector, including its combination cleaning units, vacuum trucks and non-destructive digging (NDD) technology. Rangedale says that as a part of this vast product and technology offering, it was important for the company to separate out its own internal renewals division. The experienced specialists inside the new division will then be able to focus entirely on delivering exceptional performance for a new suite of customers across Australia.
The Rangedale operations team will expand into the new renewals division.
Growing in numbers Rangedale is also bringing on board some of Australia’s most experienced renewal sector experts. David Dodemaide has been appointed General Manager of the new division, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in the Australian water industry specialising in trenchless technologies. This experience – and his subsequent management experience of various company’s sewer and water renewal divisions across several years – will be vital to Rangedale’s success. Mr Dodemaide is well known throughout the industry after developing and managing sewer asset rehabilitation teams over the years while also working and developing successful relationships with stakeholders. Rangedale is also expanding its delivery crews as more personnel will be required to operate the advanced product and service offerings. This means substantial employment opportunities will be created primarily across Australia’s eastern seaboard; however, through Rangedale’s internal regionalisation strategies, the company says it will not be limited in its ability for growth and will respond to clients on an as-needs basis, wherever the work presents. Over the past three years, Rangedale has tripled in size to nearly 250 internal employees, with numbers expected to continually increase along side its service expansion. Rangedale not only offers a program delivery services but also a 24/7 response. For more information visit www.rangedale.com.au

Wilmot employed a UV liner system to complete the rehabilitation project.
The Wilmot way of relining Wilmot Pipelining was recently engaged to complete a vital storm water culvert relining project on the rail network in New South Wales. Located in the Hunter Valley, Wilmot was responsible for relining eight separate sites in difficult to access areas and unreliable terrain.
W
ilmot Pipelining is an industry leader in using no-dig trenchless technology in both house service and network infrastructure pipe relining and pipeline rehabilitation throughout NSW. From house service sized relining projects to large scale network infrastructure assets, the Wilmot team has a relining solution for all size pipes and drainage systems. In February 2021, Wilmot’s team was contracted to complete the stormwater culvert relining project. The culverts were running under the rail corridor and were constructed with heritage brick and mortar. To ensure another 50 years of service was achievable, the culverts required serious rehabilitation to stabilise and upgrade the assets.
52 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
To complete the works, Wilmot used its trenchless technology expertise and installed close fit cured-in-place (CIP) UV liners, which allowed for the network to continue its operations during the entire duration of the project. Wilmot Managing Director Andrew Wilmot says these liners were chosen due to structural properties of the liner and the suitability of the product for the rail network. “These liners are completely cured in place which means no excavating or jacking to install,” he says. “The engineering team at Wilmot designed the CIP liners while working closely with the manufacturer to satisfy the rail networks requirements for structural and dynamic loads. The outcome speaks for itself
with all eight sites delivered on time with a minimal footprint on site the client was extremely impressed. “Trenchless technology really is a fantastic alternative to conventional digging. There is a growing awareness among councils and developers on the benefits of using such.” Up for the challenge On the project, the culverts size ranged from DN900-DN1600 with various shapes. Despite challenges faced during the works, Mr Wilmot says the team successfully completed the vital relining on the eight separate sites on time and within budget – with the five-week program completed in February 2021. “The crew overcame heavy forecasted rain on numerous occasions alongside high
RELINING
summer temperatures, as well as steep terrain and difficult site access,” says Mr Wilmot. “The team displayed initiative and lateral thinking to overcome previous site plans and adapted the installation techniques to suit the difficult terrains and challenging site conditions.” Upon completion of the eight sites in very tricky terrain, the Wilmot team displayed once again its innovation and endogeneity in finding a solution for the client. A thorough program The Wilmot team are no strangers to relining projects, with a tried and tested program developed by the specialist to ensure relining success on every job. First, Wilmot uses robotic crawler cameras to supply the client with the industry standard Wincan reporting software. This software allows for general CCTV observations as well as pre- and post-relining reports with CCTV footage supplied to the client at the completion of all inspections and upgrades undertaken by Wilmot. After initially assessing the asset with robotic camera, the most common method used by Wilmot for pipeline rehabilitation and relining projects is CIP; however, the Wilmot team also has capabilities in pipe bursting and localised structural repairs performed using confined space line entry. Mr Wilmot says the installation of CIP liners by the company allow the municipal asset owner a chance to work with the team at Wilmot throughout the design and implementation stages of all pipe relining project to ensure both structural integrity is delivered while installing liners without effecting hydraulic flows. “With a strong hydraulic background, the management at Wilmot are very skilled and equipped for any questions regarding liner design and installation to achieve the desired outcome.” A CCTV crawler completing an inspection prior to the rail network relining.
About Wilmot Pipelining With its headquarters in Newcastle, NSW, Wilmot Pipelining is frequently contracted across the state; however, the company does service all areas in Australia and conducts rehabilitations of pipelines of all shapes and sizes. With a strong background in pipeline construction and hydraulic services, the Wilmot management team has a second-to-none understanding of the way pipelines are constructed. This understanding – combined with the trenchless approach – makes Wilmot a complete pipeline and infrastructure rehabilitation company. Wilmot provides many different rehabilitation methods for its clients and prides itself on finding a solution for any situation, with most of its upgrades carried out on municipal assets such as water, energy providers, wastewater, industrial facilities and refineries. Its dedicated team is committed to quality assurance, is accredited in confined space entry and has strict WHS procedures and safety standards. LCL leads the way Servicing customers across Melbourne and the wider region, LCL Plumbing and Drainage is a drain relining specialist that employs trenchless technology for the repair of broken or damaged pipes. With experience in CCTV inspections, water jetting and several relining methods, LCL is quickly growing in popularity as the go-to specialist across the state.
L
CL’s relining process involves the installation of a lining that bonds to the inside of the damaged pipe to create a new pipe within. With no excavation required, the efficient and cost-effective solution means less disruption for the customer and the environment and allows for access and repair of pipes that would be otherwise inaccessible. LCL Director Luke Lane says the first step for the operational team on a relining project is to complete a CCTV drain camera inspection. To do so, the company uses top-of-the-range equipment, including push rods and tractors. “We can pinpoint the exact location of the issue, eliminating all of the guesswork and wasted time you might experience with other plumbers,” says Mr Lane, adding that customers are then provided with a detailed diagnosis and report as well as quality, colour video footage and a map of the drain.
A member of the LCL Plumbing and Drainage team with some of the company’s industry leading equipment.
The detailed condition report advises the best drainage solution to suit various budgets, and all inspections can be recorded on DVD or USB at the client’s request. “This is particularly useful when you need to provide evidence of a fault for an insurance claim or prove existing drainage problems prior to purchasing your new property,” says Mr Lane. Once the CCTV inspection is complete, LCL uses a high-pressure water jet to thoroughly clean the existing pipework, ensuring a clean and even surface remains on the internal walls of the pipe to achieve the best results. Following the clean, LCL incorporates
on of its several methods in drain relining and repairs to specific lengths of pipe, rather than fixing areas that are still in working order to reduce time and costs. “Our relining methods include spray lining, inversion, cure in place, patch lining and UV lining, among others,” says Mr Lane. “Our specialist plumbers will choose the best option for your particular job, then, once the lining is in place and curing time is complete, you will have structurally sound, good-as-new pipes.” For more information visit www.lclplumbing.com.au

LEAK DETECTION
Detecting an industry leader Archibald’s Leak Detection Services is a family-owned and run business, founded in 1993. With Founder Neil Archibald still at the company’s helm alongside wife Kathryn and son Iain, Archibald’s continues to offer the Australasian industry unmatched services and expertise for all varieties of leak detection jobs.
A
rchibald’s boasts an impressive list of results in various fields, making it the best choice for any water, gas and petrochemical leak location projects or sub surface utility locating jobs. With a vast knowledge of the best practices, Archibald’s can detect leaks in many pipe composites using its cutting-edge technologies and experienced operators. The company prides itself on delivering reliable and costeffective solutions for locating buried services, regardless of the complex nature a project may present.
Mr Archibald says, no matter what, the company does not shy away from a challenge – and the team often finds itself completing jobs that other organisations might walk away from. “We tend to be called for the difficult scenarios, like a recent job at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre at the Austin Hospital on behalf of a leading fire protection company,” he says. “They had a pressure loss within the fire sprinkler system installation at the hospital, the jacking pump was cutting in at regular

58 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
intervals and the only water surfacing was through the power conduit supplying the jacking pump. “We were tasked to identify and locate where the root of the problem was coming from – which was a poly fusion 200 mm installation with far from accurate plans.” Another example was a 600 L/minute loss from the fire service at the Ford Motor Company complex, where the defect was identified and located inside a storm water pit. For a Melbourne water authority, water was surfacing in a low-lying area with multiple water supply and distribution mains, it was traced back to just over 1 km away in another suburb where the leak was concealed under a driveway. Despite these difficult scenarios, Archibald’s continues to prioritise using the least disruptive solutions, such as acoustic sound devices, correlators, drain inspection cameras, ground penetrating radar and non-destructive digging options, to name a few. “We always strive for the least obtrusive methodology and the least inconvenient practices for surrounding individuals or businesses,” says Mr Archibald. “We recently conducted a water audit for a regional coastal town in Victoria that had an unaccounted flow of 6 L/second leaving the reservoir, the town was flow tested in the wee hours of the morning and sectioned off the identify if it was a major defect or a series of smaller ones.” With some careful planning, this was carried out with little or no impact on the supply to customers. The leak was identified in an area, then a street and narrowed down to a 40 mm poly service to a block of flats with not a single drop surfacing. A combination of flow tests, sounding pods and sounding equipment was used on this project. Nation-wide offerings Though based in Melbourne, the Archibald’s team has worked in every state and territory in the country and also on international projects in Fiji and Singapore. Mr Archibald says there is often quite a lot of work at airports throughout the country, as well as fuel lines and water mains in
LEAK DETECTION
commercial and residential properties, retail petroleum sites, mining villages and much more. “We are considered industry leaders in tracer gas methodologies,” says Mr Archibald. “Tracer gas is a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen, where the hydrogen element being lighter than air generally permeates upwards from a defect or escape. So, often on a leak detection project, we charge a pipe up with tracer gas and as it escapes, it does so in close proximity to the defect due to its rising nature.” Acoustic devices are generally deployed to pinpoint defects, for excavation and repair. Mr Archibald says this is somewhat of an industry evolution and the team sees many more incidents occurring in non-metallic pipes, sounding methodologies are less effective on these materials. Another regular job Archibald’s is contracted to complete is the testing needs of new fire and fuel installations, along with subdivisions for water, gas and sewer rising mains, that are non-compliant when pressure tested. This could be due to a leaking problem or damage. “A lot of occasions it can be a third-party intervention, someone else has damaged the install and has neglected to let anyone know,” says Mr Archibald.
Extensive knowledge While the company has existed since 1993, Mr Archibald’s experience in the industry started long before that. “I come from a trade background, when I started working as a maintenance fitter/mechanic for the Board of Works in 1976 as an apprentice,” he says. “It was an exceptional organisation to do a trade as the variety was amazing. I worked on everything from small stationary motors, vehicles, boats, earthmoving equipment to tunnel boring machines. “I started working in the leak detection field at Melbourne Water, and then around 1993 with the semi privatisation of the water industry, it was suggested we contract out our services.” Now, Mr Archibald continues to specialise in industry needs for water utilities, saying the team undertakes work almost daily for water authorities in Melbourne and regional Victorian. “It’s kind of routine for us, the work we do for all the major authorities like City West Water, Yarra Valley Water and so on. We’ve also been involved with many regional authorities in some way, shape or form over the years, as well as work for authorities interstate,” he says.
“The draw back these days is with contracted maintenance, we are more often only seen as an expense due to the statistics kept by maintenance contracts, not really a saving. “Additionally, there are a lot more organisations offering a ‘leak detection’ service these days, which is amusing considering these organisations often advertise as industry experts despite having less than three years of experience. Our philosophy is if we are good enough, we don’t need to tell people – our customers will tell us. “We’re now in our 27th year of operation, and we still have customers that we’ve had ever since we started coming back to us for jobs. We’re a small company with a big reputation.” In addition to Mr Archibald’s industry successes, he and his wife Kathryn also volunteer for Vision Australia Seeing Eye dogs, caring for more than 20 dogs in their tenure. Archibald’s Leak Detection Services has also proudly sponsored three dogs as a company over this time.

Whether it is a large pipe displacement, cracks and fractures, concrete slurry ingress or an intruding connection, there is no need for unnecessary, expensive and messy excavation to repair the pipe as TDG can carry out the repairs from the pipe internally. Trenchless pipeline rehabilitation provides clientele with an innovative and cost-effective option for repair of pipe defects at a fraction of the cost of excavation and open cut replacement. TDG’s experienced operators use the company’s multifunctional trucks cohesively to provide a turn-key solution for challenging pipeline repairs. High-pressure water jet cutting robot As TDG continues to expand its reach throughout the east coast of Australia, it also continues to expand its fleet and capabilities. With the acquisition of the new high-pressure water jet cutting robot, TDG has taken its pipe rehabilitation service offering to another level. The first of its kind to be used in Australia, this robotic unit differentiates from the traditional milling robot units through its use of powerful hydro-powered motors. As such, the water jet cutting component of the new
robot has a huge cutting power of 43,500 psi to allow for precise, controlled and quick cutting of tree roots, scaling, solidified fat, failed liner, calcium and mineral deposits. Notably, it is particularly efficient at removing oysters from within pipes by using its high-pressure water jet to dislodge the oyster from the pipe, as opposed to the time-consuming method of grinding the oysters out. What once may have taken days to do, TDG’s water jet cutting robot can do in a fraction of that time with minimal damage to the asset. The multifunctional unit is also equipped with CCTV to monitor and control the works from outside the pipe. Grinding and milling attachments can still be used with the same unit for reinstating service connections and cutting protruding obstructions. Additionally, it is self-propelled via cable, meaning it is safer to operate and only one access chamber is required to be open to use it. With its extensive resource pool, technologically advanced equipment and highly skilled staff, TDG is the ideal partner to provide the services required to maintain sewer and stormwater assets.

New start, same magic for Ditch Witch In 2020, CEA became the official distributor for Ditch Witch in Australia and New Zealand. Now known domestically as Ditch Witch CEA, the company has not skipped a beat, continuing to supply the trenchless market with high-quality underground construction equipment.
W
ith its purchase of ELB Equipment in 2020, CEA became the official distributor of Diamond Z, Screenpod, TrackStack, Hammerhead, Ring-O-Matic and Subsite equipment, along with Ditch Witch and Komptech, expanding its product portfolio for clients operating in the infrastructure construction, utility maintenance, waste management and recycling sectors. Despite its wide range of products and brands, CEA Specialty Equipment Brand Leader Dean Cavanagh says the integration of Ditch Witch has been nothing but positive and has built on the already good reputations of both brands. “The two businesses had very similar cultures making the transition quite seamless,” he says. “Collectively the business has enjoyed the opportunity to expand our core offering of products while looking at opportunities to develop and grow our already extensive customer base.
“The integration has provided many synergies, allowing the business to take advantage of our branch network, long standing staff and their product knowledge along with the systems and structure CEA brings. Moving forward, the business has a very strong focus on exceeding customers’ expectations by delivering products that are developed with ease of use, comfort and safety in mind.” Ditch Witch already has an extensive history in the design and manufacturing of top-quality underground construction equipment, and Mr Cavanagh says its sharp focus will continue to set the brand apart in the market. “With an extensive range of trenchers, horizontal directional drills, vacuum excavation and mini skid steers, the business is well known globally for its diverse product range. The brand enjoys an enviable reputation for advanced design, rugged construction, long-term durability, ease of use and overall reliability.
“This is a really exciting proposition for both the Australian and New Zealand markets,” he says. Some of Ditch Witch’s most popular products throughout the region continue to be the SK range of skid steers, the AT/JT directional drills and the RT range of trenchers, and Mr Cavanagh says it’s the simplicity and comfort of operation, as well as the quality and robustness of these machines, that keep customers coming back for more. “We are always evaluating new products and have an ability to meet the needs of the Australian and New Zealand markets,” he says. “Ditch Witch has a select number of upgraded models, due for release during the early part of 2022. The current focus is to grow the Ditch Witch brand and product portfolio while delivering products that are fit for purpose and in line with our customers’ requirements. “We believe we have the network, knowledge and staff to deliver a really positive customer experience and will continue to grow and build on that over the coming years.” While 2020 was a different year for everyone, Mr Cavanagh says Ditch Witch CEA is excited about the future and the opportunities opening within the trenchless industry.

Flushing bad solutions down the drain
The FLUSHER II system.
62 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA MARCH 2021
COMPANY NEWS
The release of Aussie Trenchless’ new FLUSHER II means network owners can forget about poor performing pipe assets they are currently trying to maintain, with a new innovative product taking the sewer maintenance sector by storm.
F
lusher II is a hand-off, passive gate device that controls and maximises hydraulic flow within a sewer network, all while considering the environment, operator safety and customer benefits. By pulsing the flow of the sewer to minimise the build-up of fats, oil, grease and debris, Flusher II is a cost-effective solution that reduces ongoing maintenance costs. Aussie Trenchless Director Chris Meredith says the new FLUSHER II model is installed in sewer maintenance holes where the network is subject to sewer chokes as a result of build up where solids are often deposited due to low flow conditions. “FLUSHER II’s unique patented flush generating flap valve is specifically designed to
clean and maintain drains and sewers,” says Mr Meredith. “With a rapid snap opening and closing action, the system produces a pulse of wastewater in a wave effect to effectively flush and cleanse the downstream sewer. Upstream will also encounter constant changes in the discharge level and flow, helping to prevent any further building up on the sewer walls. “Ultimately, by storing and then suddenly releasing the natural flow present in drains and sewers, FLUSHER II can generate a repetitious energised hydraulic flush of effluent energy to remove debris, silt and the like that, if left untreated, would choke a conduits function.” Ongoing benefits FLUSHER II is a system that offers ongoing benefits to the asset, environment and safety of the customer. The installation of FLUSHER II is simple and efficient and, once installed, it is immediately operational, allowing the sewer to become a passive self-cleaning asset that requires no power. The design is also resistant to jamming and blocking, is fail-safe during storm conditions and requires minimal maintenance after installation. This removes the need for costly,
repetitive jetting and CCTV programs – with an expectation of 71 per cent cost saving when compared to a quarterly cleaning program – instead allow for ongoing, remote monitoring with telemetry, and data logging as an option. “Asset owners will have less customer access complaints and no jet cleaning damage to the pipe internals, as well as the ease of relocating the system to various problem areas if required,” says Mr Meredith. By removing the need for jet cleaning there is a reduced customer access requirement as well as the removal of heavy jetting truck site footprints and reduced potable water usage. The product is made from stainless steel for longevity and installed into its own maintenance chamber than can be adjusted if required. Used as either a permanent or temporary installation, Mr Meredith says the FLUSHER II should be of interest to most water authorities as well as city and regional councils that are responsible for the serviceability of the wastewater network.
