A change, but no holiday
Change is always difficult. We get used to things and like the way they are. Even if we know there can be improvement, the thought of going through a process of change to achieve that gain can be enough to make us forgo the step forward.
Cordless is a great example.
If the tools are old and fairly inefficient, the idea of having to change a battery platform and get used to the feel and operation of a new set of tools can be so annoying we often choose to soldier on, carrying around twice as many batteries as everyone else, and charging them twice as often, rather than make the upgrade.
The crazy thing is, when we do finally bite the bullet and make the move to the new gear, we wonder why we put up with old equipment for so long. Our work becomes more efficient and pleasurable that we then spend the next six months grinding our teeth over what the reluctance to change may have cost us.
What Tradies Want has found a new home with Australia’s leading B2B publisher, Prime
Creative Media, and for all of us here at WTW it’s a welcome culture shock.
It’s an amazing learning curve, new management structure, more than a hundred staff to get to know, and even plush new offices, in Melbourne and Sydney.
But like the tradie with new cordless tools greeting happy customers, hopefully the change for the magazine’s readers and supporters will only show up in small details. Expect the usual, consistent on-sale times. Look forward to a diverse range of stories to suit your tradie lifestyle needs as well as an increase in tool-related articles validated by users.
Despite the exciting added value to the publication with Prime Creative Media, What Tradies Want will remain, as it’s always been, all about Australian tradies and the businesses which support them. We’ll still
be chasing the latest and best equipment to review, meeting the most influential and interesting people, and every now and then, having a quiet chuckle at something that tickles our fancy.
For sure, a change of owner means a step up in the operations, but the one thing we hope doesn’t change is you folks: the readers and supporters of the magazine.
The email address is at the top of the page. Let us know what you think as we travel along. We’re always happy to hear from you, especially if there’s things you feel we can improve. TF

Pole
position
In Holland – sometimes called The Neverlands, which we think was the home of fairytale character Peter Pan-fried – the Dutchies have a sport where they stick a big pole in one of their wet, manky waterways, then piss-bolt up the bank, hurl themselves out over the edge, and hope like buggery they grab the pole and vault to the other side. Apparently farmers used to do it instead of walking along to the nearest bridge. Now it’s all high-tech and competitive and called ‘fierljeppen’.
Anyway, there was a competition at Haarlem, presumably home of the famous basketball team The Gloobetrooters, and Rian Baas took the win with a leap of 17.09 metres.
Lucky he didn’t poo his pants. That would’ve been a Baas turd.

HYPEDOME GARDEN DOMES
We admit we got caught out with this one.
We were cruising around a few of our favourite websites while the firewall was down, searching tradie terms like ‘backdoor’, ‘centrepunch’ and ‘nailled’, when we thought we asked for one about garden gnomes.
Who wouldn’t want to watch a few of those videos, right?
We clicked on the link, and before we realised what had happened we were looking at a site all about garden domes.
The editor walked in at just that point, and with great relief we pretended we were doing research for this page, so now you have to read about these new-age shelter-things.
Hypedomes come in different sizes, colours and prices – a description which fits the videos we were looking for – and you can order from hypedome. com. They’re transparent, UV-protected, frameless, and a small one runs to about $3560 plus freight from hypedome.com
We have to sort out our typing skills. Next thing you know we’ll searching MILK.
JBL CLIP 4 PORTABLE BLUETOOTH SPEAKER
We’ve often thought how cool it’d be to have a pet dolphin.
Imagine the respect from friends and family when you slap down the empty glass, let fly a belch and say, “Well, I’m off to polish the porpoise.”
Of course, the blowhole buddy would need to be entertained, and that’s where we reckon one of these JBL Bluey speakers would come in handy. They’re waterproof, so it could be chucked in the inflatable wading pool. The bottle-nosed best friend could pick it up and chuck it around by its little handle, maybe doing a bit of a tail walk and kidney-smashing a Grey Nurse if there happened to be one around. It could even
play soundtracks from Flipper shows or that movie Paul Hogan did. No wait.
Dolphins are intelligent. Best not make the poor bugger listen to that shithouse Paul Hogan effort.
Music would go down well, though. They could tuna fish. Maybe play a few scales. Start a fillet-monic orchestra.
If you don’t have a pet dolphin, or you’re waiting for one to be delivered from Amazon, you could always hang one of these JBLs in the shower to sing along with. They available at most good sound stores – JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Officeworks and so forth –and the asking price is around $90.

SIMMS GTS SPEY VAULT ROD HOLDER
Fly fishermen are the golfers of the fishing world. They wear weird clothes, spend hours and hours creating lures which are either wellknown classics or top-secret designs of their own which they’ll happily kill to protect, and then when they get after a trout they have all kinds of weird rules and ceremonies about what constitutes a fair catch.
Bugger that, we say. Load up a hook with a handful of chicken guts, punch a few holes in a can of Pal or Chum to burley up the unsuspecting whoppers, and let the cards fall where they may. “A knob of jelly tossed into a creek on a slow day is better than going hungry,” that’s our motto.
But that’s just us. Fly fishermen are a different breed, and for them, ocky-strapping the Ugly Stik on the bullbar while dragging the tinny to the next billabong just isn’t the go. Oh no. The fly-fishing crowd like to have their megabuck, knitting-needle-thin rods in a special carry container, like this $399 jobbie from Simms. Apparently the GTS Spey Vault is ideal for ‘10FT lake or longer euro nymphing rods’.
We get a rod when we think about nymphing, but this probably isn’t the right place to discuss it.
The GTS Spey Vault looks to only be available from specialist flyfishing stores, and we don’t know the secret handshake to gain entry. Try theflyfisher.com.au
AUTOMETER ULTRA LITE IN-DASH SPEEDO
Speedos in modern cars are a bit how’s-your-father.
Let’s not be coy about it: they lie. They read higher than the vehicle’s true speed.
Drivers striving for a meaningful, bragworthy result from a pass down the main street of their local town after an afternoon watching the drifting are led astray by the stock speedometer. Before they know where they’re at they’re blowing a load through the dump valve and claiming top speeds which just aren’t true.
The answer is a high-accuracy unit like this one from Supercheap Auto.
It’s a special-order item, but for a $1004 the Autometer
Ultra Lite is accurate, has incandescent lighting around the perimeter of the dial, two trip meters which will measure up to a million kilometres, is compatible with two-wire and three-wire hall effect speed sensors, and comes complete with a bulb-and-socket assembly with a couple of different bulb covers.
Or you could run a $130 GPS from Amazon. Or wait for the mobile speed-camera fine to arrive. Those bastards seem to be fairly accurate, eh?
TVIDLER EAR CLEANER
Most Aussies favour the cotton bud for getting that greasy brown shit out of the earhole, but a little over-enthusiasm can lead to…something. We’re couldn’t get any clear, scientific fact on what might happen. We know it hurts like a bastard when the thing goes in too far.
The Tvidler ear cleaner doesn’t waste any time with boring scientific fact. No sir!
It’s a plastic augur that gets in there and screws out that nasty ear wax. It actually doesn’t look like such a bad concept, but the marketing material on the website is a little shaky at best.
We found the Tvidler because an ad popped up on Faceplant – always a marker of high credibility. It looked interesting, so we clicked
on it, only to find there was a ‘Limited Time Offer 50% Off’. There was timer showing the offer had only ’11.04’ to run, and there were only 12 items left in stock.
We logged in again the next day the numbers were the same.
The website has lots of scary claims about what can happen if you don’t use this thing, and some flash-looking award logos which, when we looked closely, said the product was ‘Tested in the US’ and an ‘Authorised Seller’.
It’s made of ‘premium grade quality plastic’ and features an award-winning design (no clue as to what award or what for).
Log on to tvidler.com, send $43, and you’ll be set for an aural reaming.

HUAWEI FREEBUDS PRO 2
TRUE WIRELESS ACTIVE NOISECANCELLING EARBUDS
There’s nothing new about earbuds, or even wireless, noise-cancelling earbuds, but we had a lot of fun trying to pronounce ‘Huawei’. The editor liked ‘Hooey’ and got a bit of support from office staff generally, but in the end the fella on the coffee cart won out with ‘hula-we-eye’, just because he offered large-sized lattes at the regular price in exchange for votes. He offered us the upgrade for a week if we actually published the result.
It’s too late for you folks now, but there was a deal going where if you bought a pair of these things between August 15 and 24, Huawei chucked in a Sound Joy Bluetooth speaker. It’s a shame the marketing geniuses who sent us the material didn’t bother to check which issue we were working on,
We rolled our eyes a little at the Zenbivy bed. To us it looks like a modern take on the good ol’ Aussie swag, but without the beautness of the heavy tarp, old blanket and squashed bit of foam for a mattress.
Ah…good memories.
The Zenbivy is a bit like a sleeping bag made usable. It has a mattress section with a couple of flexy uprights which allow the doona bit to drape over the whole thing. Instead of the sleeper finding themselves feeling like they’re having their guts squashed out by a giant trouser python when they try and roll over, this rig allows all kinds of movement without the risk of suffocation or restriction of blood flow.
We have to admit we thought it looked like a good product and worthy of a try, but when we went to look at costs, the 10º bag – there are bags to cope with different minimum temperatures – came in at US$380, plus the cost of FedEx delivery.
If we’d been in the Zenbivy we’d have shit the bed in fright!
If you’re keen, order from zenbivy.com. We’ll stick with our swag. One bowel movement more or less after a wild night in camp won’t make any difference to that tried and true outfit.
FORESKIN TISSUE EXPANDER KIT
You’re all probably thinking we’re going make lots of jokes here, but we’re not. This is a serious bit of kit to help deal with a debilitating problem.
Phimosis is a situation where the hood on a bloke’s…um…ol’ feller tightens up and he can’t …err…let Mr Happy spit through the tent flap – if you know what we mean.
We’d like to tell you more about it, but we were sitting at breakfast when a doctor at the table started to explain it all, and, seriously, it near turned us off our kransky and yoghurt.
We were in a tight spot, for sure. Thank goodness for the Novoglan rig, eh?
We had our fingers in our ears and were singing nursery rhymes by the time the doc got to specifics, so you’ll have to log on to find out more. The kit seen here sells for $226.08 from novoglan.com, but a trip to a medical professional might a better first step.
Just as we pulled our fingers from our lugholes the doc was explaining how he used to use an instrument shaped like an inside-out pair of pliers when he was younger, and while we admire a professional, that sounded like a bit of a stretch.

TESTING TIMES
Amonth or so back some people lost their mind when Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin was depicted in a video dancing at a private party in Helsinki. At 36 Ms Marin – the PM since 2019 – is the world’s thirdyoungest national leader. As such she obviously has young friends, and young people obviously party differently to the fuddy-duddies who typically occupy the halls of power.
When footage emerged of the PM and her attractive pals getting a little loose in private, what with their ‘twerking’ and ‘steamy dancing’, the opposition was so aghast it demanded Marin submit to a drug test! Although she was under no obligation to do so, the prime minister agreed and duly tested negative – a giant middle finger to her cynical detractors. That lady, I have to say, is my kind of leader.
In Australia, politicians of all stripes have backed legislation and pushed for industry standards that compel countless workers throughout the land to submit to random drug and alcohol testing. This is a good thing. It protects lives across a broad sweep of sectors including behemoths like construction, mining and transport.
It’s not a good thing, however, when governments seek to drug test the shit out of anyone they’re not ideologically aligned with in order to promote vote-generating class warfare under the spurious cover of being ‘prudent’ with taxpayers’ money.
The former Morrison government, for example, repeatedly toyed with the idea of drug testing welfare recipients – a measure strongly rejected by support services and medical experts alike.
You won’t be shocked to note there’s never been a discussion about drug testing the fat cats who receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars via government corporatewelfare measures, nor the sporting-club patrons who benefit from industrial-scale pork barrelling that’s bankrolled using your hard-earned.
Nup, drug tests generally apply to blue-collar and heavy industries, and are periodically used as a stick to harass the socially and economically disadvantaged. Funny how drug testing – be it random or mandatory – never applies to politicians. Those we elect and entrust with making fair and equitable laws are blithely untroubled by any such intrusions or regulations.
That’s quite hard to fathom, isn’t it?
Particularly in light of evidence that alcohol consumption is off the charts in the federal
parliament workplace. Politicians and their staffers can – and do – front up to do the peoples’ work while inebriated, sometimes shitfaced. Then other things can happen, like widespread sexual assault and harassment, as reported by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins last year.
I spent a year working in the Federal press gallery in the early 1990s and witnessed plenty of large-scale alcohol abuse myself. Hell, I even took part, such is the piss-head culture of the place.
I also know drugs were in good supply in the corridors of power but, of course, the public only ever hears whispers about that because drugs are easier to hide than a pollie with a wobbly boot. And besides, plenty of journos in the press gallery – which is supposed to hold the powerful to account – love drugging and boozing too. The line was, ‘What happens in Canberra stays in Canberra.’
Make no mistake, if we drug and alcohol tested the people working in that building the alarm bells would never top ringing. Everyone knows the rich and powerful always have the best gear. Your average welfare recipient is unlikely to have a spare $300 to waste on a gram of cocaine. On the other hand, the base annual salary for MPs and senators is $217,060. Most cabinet ministers earn around $370,000.
Unlike the plebs on low wages or scraping by on Centrelink, the political class often gets to drink at mates rates or for free! In their offices! While they’re at fucking work! Paid for by you and me!
Little wonder that when Kate Jenkins canvassed 1723 current and former politicians and staffers she found ‘significant alcohol use’ and a ‘drinking culture’ was a real problem at Parliament House.
Now, I’m obviously not saying all politicians and political staffers are sex pests, druggos or problem drinkers, but undoubtedly plenty are –particularly the boozers. And wouldn’t you just love to know who they are and what bills they’ve voted on while drunk or stoned? And wouldn’t it be prudent, fair and just if the people who control our country were subjected to the same chemical checks as the worker bees and the supposed ‘role models’ of our sporting codes?
So take a giant bow Prime Minister Sanna Marin – the first politician (let alone national leader) – I’ve ever heard of who has submitted themselves to a drug test.
She’s a mad dancer, too.

Bluewater speedsters across the tropics
Pro guide Tim O’Reilly takes us on a search for pelagic fish in the far north.
20 WHAT TRADIES WANT.
Shiny silver speedsters keep things lively offshore.
speedsters tropics
Australia’s tropical coastline is blessed with myriad opportunities to tackle large, blue-water, pelagic fish. Even trailerboat fisherman can use calm-weather windows to head well off-shore into the blue yonder, while charter operations utilising a mothership and fishing-tender set up can really explore this incredibly diverse fishery. I enjoy the Spring months for pelagic fishing in the far north with pockets of amazingly clear conditions. Temperatures begin to favour fish and fishers alike, with the average ambient being between 20° and 32°.
WHAT TRADIES WANT. 21
Early Spring can bring about some incredible sight-casting opportunities for larger pelagic fish out wide. When clear skies combine with light sea breezes and minimal swell, the chance to see packs of feeding or cruising fish increases markedly. The ability to see birds feeding off in the distance can be a huge advantage when chasing speedy fish which ride the tidal currents. Having a zippy boat to get on the spot while the action is happening is sure to make a big difference. There are a number of ways to target blue-
water speedsters across the Top End:
• Trolling – a spread of lures out the back of the boat at various lengths being towed at various speeds
• Spinning – casting lures, plastics and metals and retrieving at high speeds, and
• Jigging – metals and vibes being retrieved off the bottom, effectively covering the water column.
Fly fishermen use a mixture of floating and sinking lines with fast retrieves to target surface feeders and pelagic fish hanging midwater.
EARLY BIRD
Starting the day early offers a big advantage throughout the Spring months. A midmorning or mid-afternoon breeze will be a common thing, so plan out your day’s fishing activity to allow a run home in reasonable conditions, preferably with the wind following or side on to your direction of travel.
If I could be fishing at any time of the day and you only gave me one hour to fish, it would be for the hour following sunrise. Everything is either actively feeding from the night shift or waking up to look for breakfast. Life begins rising up off the bottom to commence the day and get busy doing whatever it is their day entails. Suddenly, schooling fish which had been resting up during the night are sparked into action by the big fiery ball in the sky.
During late Spring and early Summer it feels like the period from sunrise through to mid-morning will present the most consistent fishing period of the day. Resting throughout the lunch period before heading out reinvigorated for the afternoon can pay dividends.
COMING IN HOT
In the terrestrial world we think of Spring as a time for blooming, blossoms, procreation and the sparking of new life. The same goes in the marine and freshwater environments across the Top End. Spawning and feeding aggregations of fish tend to flourish, especially pelagic fish, which are those which must keep swimming, living life ‘on the fin’

BLUEWATER SPEEDSTERS ACROSS THE TROPICS
as it were. The tropical coastline of Australia can be hugely productive for pelagic fish as food chains head into overdrive.
A good wet season will often see prolific baitfish holding in bays and out along beaches. The speedsters follow the bait in and will often feed in frenzied bait-ball mode before cruising off to maraud other small fish. Tuna, queenfish, mackerel and trevally are four of the best-known fish for this type of behaviour. If approached correctly, schools of hungry fish can light it up all round the boat.
JUST GET IT IN THE WATER
As a guide, the most pleasure and pain arises from fish erupting around the boat. We barely ever catch as many as we think we should have, and often the pressure of the whole situation just blows it all up. Sometimes the hardest thing in the world feels like unhooking a lure and dropping it over the side, which is almost all that’s needed in many of these scenarios. I have lost count of the times a school of queenfish or trevally has just shadowed the boat after the first fish is hooked, providing seemingly endless opportunities for double and triple hook ups. Fish located midwater on the sounder can at times rise up under the shadow of a drifting boat, causing mayhem on board. Ripping almost any kind of lure past the pack produces a reaction bite and the battle recommences.

Larger pelagic fish, such as marlin, sailfish and Giant Wahoo, are prime examples of smash-and-grab feeding tactics. Large swimbaits and skirted lures will attract these speedsters very close to the boat at times. Some expert vessels will use hookless teasers, retrieving them after being pounced on, before switching the hungry fish to a hooked bait on a separate rod. This hook-up is often right at the back of the boat. If a hungry fish is denied a feed right at that crucial moment, it will disappear annoyed!
IT’S A TIDE THING
Being focused on tide changes during Spring is crucial to fishing success. Many of the other variables in weather are largely subdued at that time of year. Trying to fish larger tides for shorter windows around both the low and
high tides makes sense. There is more likely to be bite frenzies during these windows. If the tide change corresponds to either early morning or later afternoon, even better. Late afternoons can be particularly productive, as warmer water running off reef flats and shoal areas really fires up the predators.
The build up to, and following on from, new- and full-moon periods are also prime times for finding aggregations of fish. This might be related to feeding, spawning and even protective aggregations, but the result
this time of year is normally the same: great captures of pelagic fish when the bite is hot. Having a reasonable amount of current is also likely to stimulate feeding activity. As baitfish are pushed past and up against any kind of structure, pelagic fish will use their superior swimming skills to ambush prey. Clues as to where they might be will generally be easier to spot when there is a good degree of current. This can get a bit crazy in some parts of the country, like the Kimberley and Torres Strait, but generally building and falling tidal ranges are best on either side of Spring tides. Fishing up-current or the pressure edge from structure can be very rewarding for pelagic fish. They like to patrol and attack prey being swept past them with the current.
THE NEED FOR SPEED
Speedy retrieves are needed when fishing for pelagic fish, whether trolling, spinning, jigging or fly fishing. Quite often a lack of speed will result in follows or outright dismissals and hook-ups will be hard to come by. But if you get enough pace up with whatever lure is being used, it will usually trigger a response from the speed brigade: tuna, mackerel, queenfish and trevally.
Trolling speeds generally vary between 4 knots and 8 knots, and this can at times be increased if the fish are hungry. After the first strike when trolling for pelagic fish, it still amazes me how often the second or third rod will go off when wound back in quickly. Fish follow other fish, and a hooked or distressed fish will often attract others who come in for a look.
Fly fisherman will usually need a doublehanded retrieve to create enough speed with the fly. Some of the higher-end jigging

rods are paired with overhead reels geared with fantastic retrieve speeds. Being able to crank fast enough to attract a wahoo or tuna is imperative when only speed can seal the deal. Modern depth sounders paint a vivid picture of what a school of fish is doing underneath and can be targeted accordingly. Nothing beats throwing a large stick bait into a current line where you just know big bustups have been coming from. The anticipation as a silver speedster crash tackles it on the surface, or even better, a large Spanish mackerel leaps high out the water with your lure flailing between its jaws, can be mind blowing! Or a pack of metre-plus queenfish hunting poppers all the way back to the boat. That stuff really gets the heart pumping.
WHERE TO FROM HERE?
These days the amount of surface and suspending lures you can cast at pelagic fish is truly mind boggling – and rather expensive. It’s a style of fishing that has really taken the tackle industry by storm. Metal jigs, vibes and soft plastics have also helped to revolutionise this fishery in recent years. Developments in high-speed and powerful spinning reels have made casting for these fish a real pleasure. Electric motors have also had a huge impact. As technology has begun putting the odds more and more in the fisherman’s favour, greater regulation has started creeping into fisheries management. Happily, fishers themselves have largely begun advocating a much higher catch-and-release percentage. Many anglers chasing larger pelagic fish are keen to see them swimming around in the ocean, getting bigger and hopefully producing plenty of young fish to catch when they grow up.
As so many of the world’s fisheries have started to struggle, the far-northern Australian
coastline remains a stalwart for those chasing fast-paced pelagic fish in relatively pristine conditions. Some of the pressure on our northern coastline from rubbish floating in from SE Asia is pretty alarming. The sheer pressure on fisheries above our far-northern territory is equally alarming. Pelagic fish are particularly susceptible to overfishing and stock collapse.
Australia needs to stay at the forefront
of fisheries management and take greater control of fishery health outside its territorial borders. The collapse of pelagic fisheries in one location in the Pacific or Indian Oceans can have a ripple effect that easily reaches our coastline.
Hopefully recreational fisherman will be seen as stewards for the continued health and vitality of this hugely important fisheries resource.
Birds flitting around bait are a very welcome sight.

Harley Davidson Low Rider
The Low Rider ST fully embraces the thundering, freedom-chasing Harley legend of old, but walks the line between the simplicity and utility of the oldgeneration bikes and the new, high-tech weapons.
Rider ST
If ever you fantasised about a motorcycle life where you met the world on your own terms, authority figures stood aside when you approached, and days were long, warm and sunny, the bike in the dream would’ve been Harley’s Low Rider ST.
Images: Marty Blake
There’s still a great deal of image attached to Harley-Davidson ownership.
The days of the chopper movement are all but gone, and the hordes of noisy Harley riders in cut-off leather vests and faded Levis parading up and down main streets being orthodontists and accountants on annual holiday are fading. Harley-Davidson is changing with the times, offering genuine performance options like both the Pan America and Sportster which have made such an impact in the past couple of years.
WHAT TRADIES WANT. 31
But the company hasn’t abandoned its heritage. The V-twin cruiser is still the heart and soul of the American manufacturer, and heart and soul are two attributes the Milwaukee-based outfit values very highly indeed.
The Low Rider ST – the FXLRST Low Rider ST to give it its complete and correct designation – is a bike which fully embraces the thundering, freedom-chasing Harley legend of old, but walks the line between the simplicity and utility of the old-generation bikes and the new, high-tech sleds which are the current marketing flavour of the month. Harley has done an absolutely superb job of getting the heart-and-soul/tech ratio spot on with the Low Rider ST. We’re still glowing with the joy and emotion of riding a bike as good as this one.
FLASH, BUT NOT TOO FLASH
The bike looks horn, and it looks like a Harley. That might sound funny, but so many other brands have copied the Harley look over the past few decades it’s really bloody difficult to tell what brand a V-twin cruiser is these days unless you can see the badge. Harley may well have been tempted to try and head off in a new direction to shake off pursuit. But it didn’t, and the simple, understated colour scheme gently highlights the very nexus of the Harley legend: a 1923cc, pushrod V-twin motor.
And it’s truly beautiful, both to look at and to ride.
Fuel injection is welcome in this day and age, and we let out a ‘Whoop!’ of excitement when we found cruise control. The whooping almost descended into tears of rapture when we realised that was where Harley had drawn the line. There weren’t a heap of rider modes, we didn’t have to connect the bike to a phone to get the best from it, and there was no traction control to dial in or manage. Obviously the refinement of
the V-twin concept, and the application of many decades of unrelenting research and development, have been lavished on what is clearly an excellent performer, but Harley has backed itself: this is what the company believes a V-twin sports tourer should be. It’s not an outline where the rider has to select from several large and complex menus to fill in the colour. The Low Rider ST is as Harley wants us to experience the legend, and we can like it or leave it.
We liked it. A lot.

The
MORNING GLORY
The frame-mounted fairing may polarise a few opinions, but, like the rest of the bike, both the finish and function are superb. The photos won’t do justice to the high quality of the detail on the Low Rider ST, and, in a strange way, the seemingly understated colour scheme probably deflects attention away a little. That’s a sidestep from Harley’s recent history, where chrome and attentiongrabbing colour schemes ruled, but look closely. The presentation is excellent. The
cable runs are almost invisible, the depth of the Gunship Grey paint is lustrous, and everything about the bike’s look highlights what a masterpiece it is. There’s a Vivid Black option which looks good as well, but the grey bike won us over.
The panniers aren’t huge, but they sit tight into the bike and are up fairly high. They’re also nicely made and well thought out, right down to the dampers which stop the lids crashing open when the catch is released, the red ‘flags’ which stay raised to show
the rider if they’re not locked in place, and that they can be removed or replaced with a flick of the wrist. Capacity isn’t huge, but it’s plenty for an overnighter or, if you’re chasing a little of the ‘badass’ culture and don’t mind going commando, maybe a few days. There was no pillion seat, pillion ’pegs or rack on our ride bike, but they’re available from H-D, along with a huge swag of other accessories, including a stereo rig – which

Bluetooths up to a phone – purpose-built to slot seamlessly into the fairing.
We found the ergos on the Low Rider ST a little strange to start with. The bike uses what Harley calls ‘mid’ controls. The rider’s feet aren’t well forward on straight legs in the classic chopper stance, and they’re not jammed up the rider’s bum on flexed knees like a sports bike. They’re in between somewhere, and it initially felt our knees were up in the air a tad. The feeling didn’t last long. Before we’d made it onto the nearby freeway and set the cruise control for the legal limit we were already settling back into the H-D h-d (Harley-Davison heavy-duty) comfort. As the sun rose over the Pacific and we scooted along in the cool, salty, morning air we loved the shelter of the fairing and couldn’t imagine any better place for our knees to be. The ’bars are actually a little higher than we expected too, but they felt great.
ALL ABOUT THE RIDE
You can look up all the specs and technical information at Harley-davidson.com/au if that’s what blows your skirt up, but no matter what the facts and figures say, it’s the riding experience that makes the Low Rider ST such a magnificent bike. That whopping V-twin punches out gobs of torque and horsepower and is kept amazingly controllable by whatever ignition curve it is Harley decided on. But at the same time, the thing will seriously cut loose with a little right-wrist action. The bike’s slim design and excellent
geometry mean the thing can be ridden with serious aggression, but when things mellow out, hitting the cruise control and letting it lump along towards a sunset on the other side of the country is bliss.
On the emotional side of things, the big, pulsing V-twin has a long-legged cruising pace which demolishes huge ribbons of freeway, seemingly between power pulses, and that just feels damn good. So does the way it slams into gear. Not like a featherweight multicylinder race bike hoping
to make it through 40 minutes at the redline before needing a piston change, but like a big, beautiful machine that’ll still be rolling the Earth long after Skynet and Judgment Day have been and gone. Brakes, clutch, handling and all the mechanical systems are excellent, as is the small instrument display on the handlebar clamp which is, in fact, very easy to read and just inside the rider’s eyeline. There’s no need to daydream. Get hold of a 2022 Low Rider ST and make the dream come true.

Latest Suzuki outboards
Designed with Aussie boaters in mind.
Suzuki Marine’s latest DF115 and DF140 four-stroke outboard engines are available in both mechanical and drive-by-wire variants to suit a wide range of boats, individual requirements and budgets. Superseding the popular DF115A and DF140A, the mechanically-driven DF115B and DF140B feature a host of innovative updates, many of which are shared with the DF115BG and DF140BG Suzuki Precision Control (SPC) drive-by-wire models. An upgraded 10.6:1 compression ratio helps the 2.0L, inline four-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve B/BG series achieve better acceleration and top-end speed, while fuel efficiency has also been improved over the previous A-series models. Tests have demonstrated up to 10% better lean-burn fuel efficiency across mid-range cruising to
high-end speeds, which is good news for boaters in the face of rising fuel costs.
Among other upgrades is a 40A alternator to deliver better charging performance at low idle speeds, ideal for today’s powerhungry fishing boats that run a full suite of marine electronics and spend a lot of time running at trolling speeds.
The redesigned cowl of the DF115B/BG and DF140B/BG features a sporty, streamlined profile that’s sculptured to complement any type of boat. It also incorporates a new airintake structure and a silencer-resonator system to further reduce engine noise at all speeds and RPM.
On the maintenance front, Suzuki has made it possible to replace the oil filter simply by removing the upper engine cover. A new Oil Spill Catcher surrounding the oil
filter mount allows for changing the filter without making a mess, too.
For boats that aren’t fitted as standard with a clear bowl fuel filter (and as back-up for those that are), Suzuki has added an easy access Water Detection Fuel Filter to help protect the engine against contaminated fuel.
A large capacity fuel pump, optimised O2 sensor mounting location and use of zinccoated rustproof fasteners further contribute to Suzuki’s renowned durability.
Featuring striking new graphics, the DF115B/BG and DF140B/BG are available in the Suzuki Pearl Nebular Black colour scheme, while the BG variant is also offered in a Super Cool White. Both the B and BG series are available in 20-inch and 25-inch shaft lengths, and are backed by Suzuki’s 3+3 year recreational warranty.

Aftersales not gone to waste with AAA Skip Bins
Bundaberg, on the central Queensland coast, is known for its balmy year-round weather, its rich agricultural history and growing tourism sector. The regional centre itself is also expanding at a rapid rate, and so too is its reliance on local waste-removal businesses such as AAA Skip Bins.
As the needs and demands of Bundaberg continue to change, so too does the need for commercialwaste removal. From rubbish collection following an event or festival, a skip bin to deal with construction waste, through to general hard-rubbish removal, AAA Skip Bins has it covered.
Local resident Jari Maata is the industrious owner-operator of AAA Skip Bins. In 2016 he took the business on when he saw an excellent opportunity while renovating and managing a housing project in Bundaberg.
KEEPING IT CLEAN FOR ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE
“Our bins are our brand,” Jari said. “The bins do a lot of our advertising for us. They are so recognisable, I have never had to advertise any other way.”
The head-turning bright-orange bins with black logo catch the eye almost as much as Jari’s new Isuzu NQR 87-190 – the latest addition to his growing fleet of mostly hooklift trucks.
Starting out with just the one 1990 Isuzu FRR 500, purchased along with the business from the original owner, Jari has taken AAA Skip Bins to the next level. From a fresh new colour scheme, the clever name and an overall expansion of the business’s capacity and customer service, Jari has personified innovation at every turn.
“AAA stands for ‘Affordable, Anytime, Anywhere,’ and that’s what we aim to provide for our customers.

“Waste removal is a great business to be in. I should have looked into it years earlier but I just didn’t know its potential,” he said.
In harnessing that potential, Jari’s made some updates and upgrades to AAA Skip Bins as he learnt more about the trade.
“Another big operational change I made was swapping to a hook-lift system for the bins, rather than the original chain-link system.
“With the hook-lift method, the hook comes out from an arm and it goes over the back of the truck, and it picks up the bin from the rear of the vehicle. We’ve found that it’s a more efficient system and I can spend more time in the cabin, rather than getting out all the time to secure things.
“With the hook lift I can arrive at the job site and stay in the truck while lowering the bins onto the ground,” Jari said.
NOTHING RUBBISH ABOUT REGIONAL AUSTRALIA
Since the onset of COVID many urban Australians have relocated to parts of the country less impacted by the pandemic. Bundaberg is just one regional city in
Queensland that has begun experiencing a population boom.
“AAA Skip Bins has grown around 25 per cent during the past year, if not more,” Jari explained. “More housing projects and refurbishments has meant a lot more work for us.”
The boom in business prompted the recent addition of an NQR to Jari’s growing fleet of Isuzu trucks.
“The NQR has great power for that size of truck, and that was a big factor for us.”
With a GVM of 8700kg and sporting Isuzu’s popular 4-cylinder, 16-valve 4HK1-TCC engine, Jari’s want for more bang-for-buck has been realised. Producing 140kW (190PS)
@ 2600rpm and torque of 513Nm @ 16002600rpm, there’s plenty of grunt to get the job done, regardless of location.
“This one is a medium wheelbase, which is exactly what I was looking for, because we do a lot of inside access work in the city and around construction sites. The overall size and manoeuvrability were a really important factor when purchasing.”
The six-speed automated manual
transmission on the NQR makes manoeuvring in tight spaces, like a work site or housing project, that much easier for Jari.
“All my trucks are automatic. I find the automated manual transmission fantastic!”
Jari also has plans for extending his fleet in the future.
“I have a 4-cylinder FRR that I bought in 2018, and I find that the engine is good for what I do. But in the future when I get a more powerful truck it will be bigger and able to carry larger waste loads and heavier skip bins.”
The reliability of Isuzu’s aftercare support is vital to Isuzu owners putting their trucks to work and growing their fleet operations.
“I opted for the extended warranty on my 2021 NQR, and in future I plan to investigate the service agreements as well,” said Jari. When asked about his plans for the business, there was no hesitation when it came to Jari’s truck brand of choice.
“I’m really happy with Isuzu Trucks. They back their products and that’s the key for me…they back their products and I know the reliability of their trucks.”

that feeling
How a builder and his pro surfing mate became adventure-film creators.
When builder Matt Gilsenan and his mate, Blake Thornton, released their action-based documentary Chase that Feeling earlier this year they packed out the Randwick Ritz cinema in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. It was the sort of premiere where the crowd weren’t afraid to hoot and holler at the on-screen action. The film, which is now available on streaming platform Garage Films, follows Matt and Blake as they surf and snowboard through Canada, Iceland, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. While the film was shot over a seven-year period in the pre-Covid era, it’s really the culmination of a life-long journey marked by friendship, major challenges and a lust for adventure.
EARLY DAYS IN MAROUBRA AND BEYOND
Matt and Blake grew up in Maroubra, and while the long, crescent-shaped beach was a fantastic aquatic playground, the surrounding suburb was a forest of apartment blocks, hard edges and high-density
living. Once they got their licenses the two friends would travel up and down the coast chasing different waves and new experiences.
“We always had a handycam and used to film each other surfing,” reflects Matt from the office of South Sydney Constructions, the busy, eastern suburbs building company he co-owns.
WORK HARD, RIDE HARD
At a young age Blake’s surfing rapidly improved, and despite being a gifted junior rugby league player he gravitated towards a career in professional surfing. It was regularly Matt who found himself behind the lens, shooting clips of his talented friend, which could be used to provide performance feedback or to create mini films. When Blake eventually began following the professional circuit, Matt elected to pursue his own passion for snowboarding. At age 20 he moved to Whistler, the Canadian ski-town famous for its steep, snow-covered peaks and party lifestyle.
Whistler runs on a motto of ‘work hard, ski hard and play hard’, so it was a great place to be based

at that age. But Matt’s parents urged him to make good use of the time overseas, and with a nudge from mum and dad he took up a carpentry apprenticeship in Canada.
Under the commonwealth trades scheme all his qualifications would be recognised back in Australia, so Matt could hammer away, confident in the knowledge he would be able to work when he returned home.
On the frigid foothills of the mountains, Matt soon learned to strap on his tool belt in any conditions.
“It starts to rain a little bit here (Australia) and the sites shut down, but over there it’s absolutely torrential rain and snow and they just put their rain jackets on and keep going.
“Sometimes it was minus-20 and you were wearing full snow outfits and gloves and
having to use blow torches to clear all the ice and snow off the slabs and the timber before you started the work for the day,” he explained.
Meanwhile, in summer they’d pull twelvehour shifts to make up for time lost in winter when the days were short and the work was slowed down by the weather.
Despite the stoic approach, Matt remembers the bosses were also openminded when it came to making the most of the Whistler lifestyle.
“The beauty of living in a ski town was everyone was kind of there for the same reason,” said Matt. “The boss of the construction company would say, ‘If it snows over 20cm, go snowboarding and then come into work after you get a few hours in.’”
ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO
With a trade to his name and miles of fresh tracks lining his memories, Matt eventually returned to Australia, and it wasn’t long before he reunited with Blake and started plotting their next adventure. They journeyed to Mexico where Matt once again picked up the camera and soon discovered technology had improved dramatically since his early projects with the family camcorder. Matt relished having equipment that could document surfing action, classic scenery, travel lifestyle and people.
“They were really, really hospitable to us, and I just got some amazing shots of local people and filmed as much of the journey as possible,” he recalls.
The water was icy, but the waves were clean.
Builder Matt Gilsenan, co-owner of South Sydney Construction. “That adventure is kind of part of our DNA now.”

Back home Matt sifted through the footage and turned it into a short-film called The Journey Begins. It was well received when Matt and Blake released it online, which gave them the confidence to start documenting their adventures on a grander scale.
CAMERAS LOADED
For their next trip, the intrepid duo plotted a month-long itinerary that incorporated Canada and Alaska. The idea was to pick locations that would encompass their dual passions for surfing and snowboarding while sharing the filming responsibilities for
the entire journey. In Tofino, Canada, they camped out in a coastal wilderness where bears, cougars and wolves roam the forests. They almost lost all their supplies when the esky broke open as they swum it to shore on an isolated island, a scene that would later provide comic relief to the finished film.
One morning they woke to find giant, wolfpaw prints in the sand and felt reassured their guide had a brought a shotgun along just in case.
“Behind us was just dense forest,” remembers Matt. “If you had to go back there to go to the bathroom or something,
you made sure you let someone know.”
To surf, they hauled on thick rubber suits and donned booties and gloves. The water may have been icy, but the waves were clean and the backdrop of towering pine-trees and snow-capped peaks made for great footage. Thankfully, they never came across the pods of orcas known to frequent the waters.
Up on the mountains they were blessed with great weather, freeing them up to roam the backcountry in search of fresh trails.
“I was kind of amazed by the conditions we that we got. It was safe, and avalanche danger was quite low,” recalls Matt. “So we got to go up in these huge mountains and snowboard some cool stuff.”
There’s a classic moment in the film where Blake, who is far from confident on a snowboard, is dumped on the peak of a near-vertical Alaskan mountain by a chopper, alongside his scheming mates. I won’t reveal how it plays out, but the reality of the moment – horrifying for Blake and hilarious for his

friends – is captured with brilliant candour.
“It was easily the most vulnerable I’ve ever felt in my life,” insists Blake. “There is always going to be times in life where you are scared and that fear can stop you from accomplishing a lot. There are a bunch of moments throughout the film where we are both terrified but suck it up and have a go.”
PLOTTING A MAJOR FILM PROJECT
When Matt and Blake returned from Canada and Alaska they knew they had the base ingredients for a major film; all they needed to do was plot a series of other trips that would take them on the road less travelled. Matt’s experience in planning jobs on building sites proved to be a handy transitional skill. It gave him a lot of confidence when it came to figuring out trip itineraries and mapping out concepts for the film.
However, both friends needed to work to fund their big-budget adventures. The challenges associated with juggling jobs, life dramas and an ambitious adventure program are all documented in the film. As Matt explains, they wanted to make something that was relatable and inspiring for the average individual.
“We didn’t want to sugar-coat the whole thing and say it was all smooth sailing… everyone sort of has their challenges
throughout their life. And whether it’s, you know, a family member getting sick, or a close friend passing away like that. I think everyone kind of definitely goes through those tough times in their life.
“And it’s just how you react to it.”
Over a seven-year period, Matt and Blake added Iceland, Tahiti and New Zealand to their list of locations. For Matt, who spends his days hustling on jobsites and weaving through Sydney traffic, it was often the moments of pure isolation that provided the most meaningful experiences.
“I remember thinking when we were in Alaska – I was at the top of the mountain on my last run of the trip – and I was just thinking to myself, like, ‘Wow, we’re in such a remote place, as far as far from home, as I’ve ever been’. I remember that was such an awesome feeling. I was so far in the middle of nowhere. And it was really cool to feel so insignificant.”
Matt experienced a similar sense of blissful solitude in Alaska when he and Blake made the most of the long, arctic-circle days to go surfing at 2:30am. Adrenaline levels were a little higher when Matt performed a wingsuit jump out of a chopper over Iceland’s spectacular landscape, and he’s quick to point out he did everything to manage the risks associated with the jump.
“I was skydiving, doing at least 10 jumps

a week in the year leading up to that. So I was super-confident in my flying ability. And it was the first time I’d jumped out of a helicopter.” Of course, all of this is captured in the film, and the action in many ways is far more exciting because Blake and Matt come across as two regular guys taking on new challenges, trailblazing into the unknown and conquering their fears.
TAKING ON THE HEAVIEST WAVE
Tahiti’s Teahupo’o is considered to be one of the fiercest waves in the world. Injuries are common and several people have died while trying to ride the fabled break where thick coils of swell fold like liquid concrete over shallow reef. However, if you get it right, the funnelling left-handers of Teahupo’o offer one of the most exhilarating experiences in surfing.
Before they started filming for Chase That Feeling, Matt and Blake had agreed to choose locations that took them outside their comfort zones. As a novice snowboarder Blake had been forced to face his fears when a chopper dropped him on the peak of a sheer-faced Alaskan mountain. In Tahiti it was Matt’s turn to confront a situation that would put his fight-versus-flight mechanism into overdrive. Although Matt is a handy surfer, riding Teahupo’o requires a high level
of skill, presence of mind, and the guts to throw yourself over the ledge on a wave that transforms from a lump of swell into a beyond-vertical slab in a split-second. When Matt and Blake pulled up to Teahupo’o, a crew of well-known pro surfers were already in the lineup, and the way Matt remembers it, even they were struggling.
“I remember watching three or four of the Oakley team going over the falls and just getting absolutely annihilated. And I was just like, ‘If the Oakley crew can’t make the take-off, how the hell am I gonna make the take-off?’”
As a former world tour surfer Blake was familiar with Teahupo’o and confident in his ability. With a little help from Blake, Matt was eventually able to figure out the tricky take-off and conquer his fears. “Having Blake there to sort of guide me through was so beneficial, and probably the only reason I ended up getting comfortable enough on that last day,” reflects Matt. “I got a six- to eight-foot barrel out there, which I’m just stoked with.
“It was one of the best waves in my life I reckon.”
INSPIRING OTHERS
Matt and Blake always set out to make a film the average person could appreciate. At its core Chase That Feeling is about two regular guys doing exceptional things and having a lot of fun along the way.
At a very fundamental level the whole process taught him how important it is to have a travel goal in your life.
“Having something to look forward to is really important. And it doesn’t need to be a two-week adventure trip in Iceland. It can be a weekend down the snow here, or even a weekend surf trip to the south coast or north coast. Just having something in the calendar to be excited about and work towards and count down to. I think that’s really important as far as keeping your work ethic strong.”
In the wake of Chase That Feeling’s success

New Renault
The latest and most advanced van from Renault is a durable, workready unit in a comfort-focused and beautifully finished package –just like WTW ’s editor, who was thrilled to be offered a drive.
Tradie vehicles work hard and need to be tough. They need to offer a high level of utility and, too often ignored in previous generations, they also need to be comfortable. A worker fatigued by struggling with a heavy vehicle and poor driving conditions is hardly going to be in shape to offer his or her best on a job when he gets to the site.
Renault’s invitation to give New Renault
Trafic a workout was too good to miss. On paper it looked as though it had just about every important aspect of a working vehicle covered. It runs a robust, efficient, 2.0-litre dCi diesel paired with efficiency-enhancing six-speed manual or six-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission, there’s 125kW of grunt on tap, and fuel consumption can be as low 6.5L/100km. An 80-litre fuel tank
means less time at bowsers and more time on the job, and up to 5 capped-price services at intervals of 30,000km or 12 months means running costs can be fairly accurately forecast – and 30,000km service intervals is a huge plus for the Renault. It means an absolute minimum of downtime.
As far as size goes, a choice of short

As I stood outside Renault Australia, gazing wistfully at the six or seven vans in different spec and colours basking in the Sydney sun, I couldn’t help but be impressed…and not just because I’d been handed a superb cappuccino, straight from the coffee van –a kitted-out Trafic, naturally.
REAL WORLD
Renault Australia backed its product in the best possible way. Instead of driving to a flash restaurant nearby for copious amounts of expensive food and alcohol, a schedule of tasks had been prepared, designed to give an idea of a typical tradie’s or worker’s day.
It started with each van’s co-drivers having to load some sugar-cane mulch into a tub, load the tub into the van, secure it, then drive to an address and do some parking and manoeuvre around some witch’s hats.
The vans were pulled over several times and Renault staff photographed the amount of cane-mulch spillage.
After backing into, and driving around, some very tightly spaced traffic cones to register a time, it was back on the road for more navigation to arrive at a building business. The owner described how his three Trafic vans had done, and were doing, amazing service, carting tools and building materials up and down the Australian east coast. It was a very impressive recommendation. After once again having the loads checked and photographed, the hungry, thirsty drivers made their way to a very flash restaurant on the NSW central coast. In keeping with tradition, the restaurant did provide copious amounts of high-class cuisine and
a selection of non-alcoholic drinks, and the superb handling of the WTW van was acknowledged when the pics showed the WTW unit had spilled the least mulch.
Unfortunately, due to climate change, or perhaps the hole in the ozone layer, or maybe some inattention to detail from the drivers, a few traffic cones were crushed…maybe a couple of times on one particular section.
So WTW was bumped out of the podium positions (dammit!).
A REAL PLEASURE
The fun aspect of the test drive was a nice touch, but it also served to underline a few important aspects of the Renault’s performance.
For starters it’s extremely comfortable for the driver. The seating is good, with plenty of adjustment, and the vision around the van from the driver’s position is excellent. That’s helped by both the newly redesigned

CHOICE, BRO
SMOOTH OPERATOR
The EDC automatic transmission was unbelievably smooth. It was difficult to pick a ratio change, even with the engine under load, and as the flathead fillets settled on the little pastry snacks we’d enjoyed at lunch, the fuss-free, ultra-quiet and seamless performance of the drive train was very much appreciated – as it would be on a long, tough day of deliveries or transporting tools and materials to one or more work sites.
All versions of New Trafic are front-wheel drive, and Premium models feature the latest fuel-saving Stop & Start functionality. We can’t pretend we loved the Stop & Start function – where the motor ‘shuts down’ while the van is stationary – but we figure we’d soon get used to it, and we bet for drivers doing a lot of stop-start driving it would make an appreciable difference in fuel consumption.
At the price of diesel at the moment, that’s a big consideration.
Available in three equipment grades, two lengths and in Van or Crew body styles, New Trafic combines its traditional offering of long- and short-wheelbase variants with the availability of Lifestyle, Pro and Premium trim levels. A long-wheelbase Crew van version available in Pro and Lifestyle trim levels adds even more versatility and usability, as does the availability of the six-speed EDC automatic transmission.
In total, there’s a choice of eight versions, and a big list of options to customise New Trafic as desired. It’d have to be a gift to owners wanting to set up the vehicle for a specific task. It was beautifully demonstrated by the super-trick set up of Joe’s coffee van – which we mentioned earlier – and equally by the vans in service with the central coast builder. Two very different applications and rigs, worlds apart in their uses, but two equally satisfied and happy customers.
With significant advancements in quality, efficiency and safety, New Trafic builds on the strengths that have made it such a success locally, with Australia the largest market outside of Europe.
New Trafic is available to order now, priced from $48,200 plus on-road costs.

Bosch GLM 100-25 C digital laser measurer
Bosch’s latest generation laser distance measurer has an impressive range of 100m and fills the gap left by the discontinuation of the GLM 80 and GLM 100.
But the GLM 100-25 C isn’t just for measuring simple distances. It can be used for a vast number of tasks, including creating accurate floor plans and sharing information – pictures and notes – with clients and other trades.
The GLM 100-25 C is as advanced as it gets for laser distance measurers. The screen includes a high-contrast IPS colour display and optical bonding with scratch-resistant glass, the digital viewfinder includes a zoom function for precise measurements over long distances, outdoors and in complex surroundings, and fast documentation is easy via Bluetooth or USB & the MeasureOn app. Having the ability to measure area, volume, distance, level and plumb, as well as being able to set the tool to measure from either the front or back of the device, is very handy. Bluetooth connectivity to the Bosch MeasureOn App is a major feature of this tool. The ability to record and save measurements, as well as create projects and worksheets which can contain unlimited notes, info and measurements for the various rooms or aspects of the greater project, is massive. Being able to sketch rooms with your finger on the device screen is a great quoting tool as well. The app turns the sketch into a floor plan with straight lines for wall dimensions, which can then, with the press of a button on the laser, add exact measurements. It can even share ideas on the fly with potential clients.
We caught up with carpenter Bond… Blake Bond. Blake was ideal to test the Bosch as he currently owns the earlier version and could speak to the improvements on this great piece of equipment.
TEST #1: INDOORS AND OUT
For a tool that has some pretty sophisticated features, the GLM100-25 C is easy to use. After a short time getting familiar with the menu functions it’s good to go.
“Getting accurate measurements on even large commercial sites in full sun is a breeze
with this 100m range,” Blake 007’ed. “The quality of the screen is excellent, and this, combined with the zoom, provides precision and accuracy.
“The front and side measuring buttons are a great addition, and the ease of operation of both the tool and the MeasureOn software make using the features friendly and enjoyable.
“I have owned a previous Bosch version, and this distance laser measurer is light years ahead.”
He seemed shaken, but not stirred.
TEST #2: BUILD QUALITY AND FEATURES
The GLM 100-25 C has been built tough and is ready for the rigours of life on the worksite.
“I love the fact Bosch has included a scratch-resistant cover glass and an IP 54 rating,” Blake serviced secretly. “It makes the measurer perfect for dusty worksites and water spray. The pouch with clip is also a great feature, and it means there’s no need to put the Bosch in a nail bag where they often otherwise end up.
“I love the range of measurements I can get thanks to the 360-degree tilt sensor, and having the date and time information

“I have so many ideas on how I can use this tool to improve various aspects of my work. Everything from quoting and meeting with clients to sending accurate, up-to-date info to my tradies and contractors.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
The GLM 100-25 C has the same features as the GLM 150 C, except for its range.
I’m pretty sure this device will blow the minds of tradies who are expecting it to only measure distances. The GLM 100-25 C is one sophisticated tool that will work well for a wide range of trades looking for easy and accurate longer measurements, as well as those looking to improve organisation and communication with other team members or trades.

When I asked Jimmy about the process of getting set up and making his first cut, he sparked, “It’s a pretty straightforward process. Once it’s all plugged in and turned on, you’re ready to go.
“On the back of the machine is the switch for the internal compressor. As long as it’s on and you have plugged it all in, you are away and cutting in less than 10 minutes.
“After making the first cut you get a sense of what settings you will need for the material you are cutting.”
TEST #2: CUTTING
We went to the thicker end of the machine’s capabilities to really test what it could do, and our first cut was a PWC with 16m flanges. Then we cut a hole for a pipe. After

that was 25mm mild steel, and last we cut 10mm aluminium. Jimmy shared his cutting experience: “This unit is a beast,” he flanged. “The speed of the cut was excellent, as was the clean edge we obtained. You can see in the images the machine didn’t skip a beat.
“The 25mm mild steel we cut was 5mm over the guide for a clean cut using the internal air compressor, but our edge was great. Hooking up to an external air supply would increase the guide from 20mm to 25mm for a maximum clean cut, and from 35mm to 40mm for maximum severance. So, as you can see, the internal air is doing an impressive job.
“Across the board, I’ve got to say the Smoothcut 100C Air is a workhorse designed for heavy commercial use.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
Weighing in at 50.5kg, the unit is surprisingly easy to move around, thanks to the large wheels. Its recommended cutting thickness of 1mm-30mm means it will suit a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, and the ease of use will further add to the strengths of this excellent plasma cutter.
At the end of the day, the quality and speed of cuts across a range of materials and thicknesses make this a go-to outfit for metal fabricators like Jimmy from SWAT – tradies who need reliable machinery that boosts productivity and reduces downtime.

comfort systems and lightweight composite toe protection – all with legendary Blundstone durability and reliability.
The #8560 is the pinnacle of the Blundstone RotoFlex range. The wheat, 6 -Inch unisex zip-sided safety boot offers new comfort systems and lightweight composite toe protection, all with legendary Blundstone durability and reliability.
There’s a heap of new technologies and features, like SoftCell ®, the overarching comfort system utilising a combination of specialist materials, and the unique biomechanical foot-cradling design to increase stability, and AirCell, a uniquely constructed, zoned-airflow footbed with specialised breathing channels to activate ventilation and moisture control, as well as provide full-body cushioned comfort. The footbed is anti-bacterial, washable and breathable.
For tradies slogging out long days in the sun, those features quickly add up to a very well-rounded and sophisticated safety boot. Other new technologies and features include:
• Infinergy® from BASF — an E-TPU, superelastic energy foam, soft but resilient, providing enhanced cushioning and impact reduction every step of the way;
• GripTek ® — a biomechanically designed TPU outsole for optimum grip and stability. It’s abrasion-resistant and heat-resistant to 140°C, as well as resistant to oil, acid, organic fat and highly resistant to hydrolysis and microbial attack; and
• Fortalite ® — the broad-fitting, compression-resistant composite toe cap which provides safety without weight. It’s airport-friendly and tested to handle a 200-joule impact.
It’s also great to see several components of the boot, including the new lining and laces, are made from recycled PET, with the lining providing moisture-wicking and long-lasting performance.
Graham Groeneveld from SCR, who specialises in all aspects of carpentry and
building maintenance, agreed to put the Blundstones to the test for us. Graham’s been in the business for over 25 years and is a gun on the tools.
TEST #1: COMFORT, FLEXIBILITY AND STABILITY
It’s clear looking at the RotoFlex #8560s that Blundstone has pulled out all the stops with these premium workboots. We caught up with Graham on several different worksites to get a broad feel for the boot’s performance in different environments, everything from scaffolding on 5-level apartment blocks to working at ground level with saws, nail guns and various other power tools.
“The boots feel surprisingly natural and comfortable from the very first wear,” laced Graham. “You need stability and surefootedness climbing through the scaffold at heights. These boots had that in spades. The grip was excellent, and the 150mm boot provided impressive ankle support.
“On the ground, the flexibility of the boot when crouching, kneeling, and generally bending was impressive. A lot of boots I’ve worn just don’t provide this level of comfort and movement.”

But after testing and wearing the boots for several weeks, the key elements that jumped out were the reduced risk of ankle rolls, the impressive composite toe cap, the TPU toe covering, and the strength of the GripTek outer sole. Together those last three prevent pretty much anything from penetrating the boot.
From intense heat to impressive grip and control, the wearer’s protected from all angles, and the water-resistant nubuck leather upper makes for dry feet on wet jobs.

Cement Australia Builders Cement
If you need a general cement product with improved workability/ pumpability, reduced water demand, enhanced bleed control, lower drying shrinkage and creep, and resistance to sulfate attack and chloride penetration, Cement Australia’s Builders Cement is just what you’re looking for.
Builders Cement (blended cement) is manufactured for use in general-purpose concrete applications, cement-based products, mortars and grouts where the use of fly ash has been approved.
Concrete made with fly ash or slag cement delivers improved later-age strength, workability, and enhances the durability of concrete. Additionally, fly ash and slag are recycled by-products of the industry. Using these in cement blends assists with reducing carbon emissions.

For this WTW Tradie Tough Test, we caught up with my good mate Heath Thompson from Impact Pools and Landscapes. Heath has been dialled into this product for some time and has been using it for his poolside paving and landscaping work.
TEST #1: MIX AND CONSISTENCY
Mix, even colour and consistency of ingredients are all essential factors, and any tradie who has been around the traps for a while will be able to look at mixed cement and immediately tell if it’s a good product or not. The way the mixed cement product stands up on the trowel, how sticky it is and its general consistency all paint a picture of its quality. Chatting with Heath and his team on site as they were laying large 600mmx400mmx30mm marble pavers
around a pool edge, Heath shared, “You just have to look at how well this product mixes up. It’s a far superior product to others we have used. It’s always consistent, regardless of if it comes out of the same batch or not, and it mixes up well, either in the mixer or in the barrow.
“But we love the quality of the ingredients and the consistency the most. The fact it’s made right here in Australia is pretty good too!”
TEST #2: EASE OF USE
It’s obvious the Impact Pools and Landscape team enjoy working with this product due to its light, fluffy nature and workability.
Anything that reduces strain and stress on wrists and hands after long days and weeks of work is a great thing. But after listening to Heath, his decision to use the Builders Cement over the standard General Purpose Cement comes down to several factors.
“The reduced drying shrinkage and creep of this product is a great feature,” he floated. “Over time it also dries harder and is less prone to sulfate attack, chloride penetration, and has reduced potential for Alkali Aggregate Reaction. What does all that mean at the end
of the day? Builders Cement will last longer and perform better than other brands.
“For my clients and the type and quality of work we produce, this means a lot.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
The versatility of Builders Cement (blended cement) makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, including domestic construction, major engineering projects, pre-cast concrete where high durability and off-form finish are required, stabilisation, including pavement recycling for road construction, mining applications, and specialist formulations such as adhesives, renders, mortars and grouts.
Blended Cement is a uniform blend of Portland cement and fly ash or slag that complies with the requirements specified in Australian Standard AS 3972 for Type GB (Blended) cement. It also complies with the AS 3972 requirements for Type SL (Shrinkage Limited) and Type SR (Sulfate Resisting) cements.

Hot Devil 3 in 1 Blow Torch & Soldering Iron
Hot Devil products have always been about reducing set-up times by creating gas torches perfect for small, hard-to-reach projects and tasks. The ease of set up and use, efficiency and power of the Hot Devil range has led to the brand becoming incredibly popular with Australian tradies.
Hot Devil’s new 3 in 1 Gas Torch & Soldering Iron is another innovative product designed for multiple uses. It has an adjustable head with eight different angles across a 90-degree range, and it’s quick and easy to fill using Hot Devil’s quality Butane Gas refill cylinder. Ignition couldn’t be easier or safer, with a single red switch and trigger squeeze to get things fired up – the dual-action process stops accidental ignitions – and the flame is extinguished by simply releasing the same red ignition switch. Hot Devil’s new 3 in 1 Gas Torch & Soldering Iron is an innovative product designed for multiple uses.
Stable, free-standing base makes for a great work station.
TEST #1: IN ACTION
Ease of use is a significant feature of this unit, and the 1300ºC burn temperature makes it perfect for a wide range of uses. Everything from plastic and metal tubing, heatshrinking, wood graining, through to paint removal, electrical, plumbing and a stack of other everyday jobs besides.
Stuart was glowing after he put the Hot Devil through its paces.
“The versatility of the torch was the first thing that stood out for me,” flamed Stuart. “Any tool that allows us to carry less equipment around is fantastic, and this Hot Devil 3 in 1 Blow Torch was perfect for small and –surprisingly – medium-sized jobs as well. Today we used the free-standing base to tin a few cables and to solder some LED cables.
It was more of a delicate type of work. Then we had to solder some earth cables together for a switchboard, and that was more of your everyday heavy-duty work. Last, we did some heatshrink work on various sized cables.
“Across the board, the result was impressive,” he nozzled.
TEST #2: EASE OF USE
The safety function on the ignition trigger does a great job of stopping accidental ignitions and wasted gas, and the switches are well positioned.
“In the past,” hissed Stuart, “I have accidentally activated torches. The flame didn’t ignite, but I did find when I next went to use the tool all the gas had been spent.
The dual process of sliding down the lever or switch, and then squeezing the trigger, means you won’t waste your gas, and if any children got hold of the torch, they wouldn’t be able to activate the ignition.”
“It’s easy to hold and feels great in the hand. Being able to use the tool either free-standing on the bench or held in the hand means it
suits different applications and makes it a very handy and flexible torch for many applications in many trades.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
It’s the set-up speed and flexible use that makes hot Devil’s 3 in 1 torch such a winner for many trades. There’s plenty of burn time, and the Hot Devil butane refill canister’s refilling process is easy and quick: turn the torch upside-down to reveal the underside of the base, push the refill canister down onto the nozzle several times, and before you know it it’s ready for action.

Kango Spade Bits
Drilling holes of substantial diameter is key for door hardware, running cables, and conduit and pipe work through timber frames. That makes the trusty spade bit an essential item for many trades.
Kango offers a range of spade bits with features which produce high-quality work even the most detail-driven tradie will appreciate. The wingless tip design does a great job ensuring less grabbing while the bit bores through timber and provides a more efficient cutting action. Across the range the bits feature a 12mm scoop designed to remove larger wood chips and maximise cutting speeds, and the bit-head includes multiple grind edges for improved chip removal. Last in an impressive list of features is the ¼" hex shank, which makes

that performed exceptionally well and allowed the bits to freely and cleanly carve out the timber without catching on the edges.
“The 12mm scoop did a great job at clearing out larger wood chips which were flying as the sharp blade did its work.”
TEST #2: SPEED
The bit not catching allows the 12mm scoop to do its work. At the same time, the Multi Grind Edge produces effortless cuts at speed.
“We had a perfect wall frame,” drilled Pat, “a mix of traditional pine and LVL. We tested the full range of sizes, and the results were consistently excellent, with fast drilling and clean, crisp edges.
“The hex shank makes these bits extremely versatile for both drills and impact drivers, and gives a tight and secure fit in traditional drills, reducing slipping in the chuck. The rate of chip removal was excellent, with a speedy drilling process across the range of sizes.
“I would definitely recommend these bits to all tradies,” said Pat, speaking plane.

TEST #1: POWER
It really doesn’t matter how balanced or lightweight a tool is if it doesn’t have the torque or power to undo nuts and bolts in a professional workshop. We asked Andrew how the AEG stacked up for power.
“This wrench has been great,” he said. “I have been working on several cars in the workshop with the 18V Brushless 3/8" Wrench, and it’s well balanced, especially with the 4Ah battery – which I actually preferred over the 2Ah cell.
“As well as feeling great in the hand, it had the power to undo everything I would expect a 3/8" wrench to handle in a professional workshop. I’ve been working on both suspension and an engine removal, and the AEG has been quite surprising to be honest, in the best possible way. With its
74Nm of torque, great grip and excellent power delivery from the combination of the Fusion brushless motor and Force batteries, for the money I think every workshop should have one.”
TEST #2: BALANCE & ERGOS
A 3/8" wrench is a tool that has actually become more of a go to for mechanics in particular, rather than, say, an impact driver. That’s due to its vertical-handle configuration providing excellent access into tight and narrow workspaces.
“The light is well placed on this wrench,” offered Andrew. “A lot of the time the light is designed to point upwards, but AEG has decided to direct the LED light forward, providing a better illumination of the workspace.
“I also like the grip and trigger positioning. It allows optimum leverage. As the tool only weighs in at 1.1 kg without the battery, it still feels solid and robust. If you take care of your tools this AEG should last very well in workshops. I’ve only just found out AEG actually has a three-year warranty on its tools and even longer on its batteries, so I’m even more impressed with the AEG range in general.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
It’s always great when a tool outperforms the expectations of tradies who use tools all day every day, and the AEG Brushless 18V 3/8" Ratchet Wrench has done that. From its balance, ergonomics and design to its delivery of power, this AEG 3/8" Ratchet Wrench won’t disappoint.

A few days later our delivery arrived.”
TEST #2: APPLICATION
Another substantial benefit of SHEETROCK ONE is when the product is delivered there’s no need to sort two types of boards. There’s no need to worry about ceiling boards accidently ending up on walls and wall boards ending up on the ceiling. At the end of the day’s installation Mark was rapt.
“It’s been a solid day. The boys made great progress in the main living area and surrounding rooms. Some big boards went up with ease and the team has started setting. “The SHEETROCK ONE boards have been great to work with. The 600 spans mean less framing and timber requirements, and an all-round faster installation process. We also used the Knauf adhesive and base coat products which the plasterers all gave great feedback on.”
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
As well as making ordering simpler and not having to handle different sheets onsite, simplifying the 10mm SHEETROCK range will reduce manufacturing complexity, in turn helping Knauf to improve continuity and reliability of plasterboard supply for tradies on residential projects. Given the pressures on tradies from shortages and long waits for steel and certain timbers, that’s a very good thing. Gerber Dual-Force multi-tool
There’s nothing worse than needing a pair of pliers, screwdriver or knife, only to end up rattling around in the toolbox, glovebox or ute and come up with nothing.
Gerber’s new Dual-Force is no ordinary multi-tool. It’s perfect for those day-to-day tasks, and for getting you out of trouble on weekend adventures on country backroads, fixing mountain bikes and swapping out surfboard fins at the beach.
In the past the functionality of the various tools within multi-tools has been average at best, often difficult or awkward to use, and often giving substandard results. But Gerber has been producing impressive multi-tools for many years now, and has set a new standard with the Dual-Force. The jaws operate like a dedicated set of pliers, with a 2-position sliplock design and extra-large teeth for optimum control, and the center-axis bit driver provides maximum torque and rotation. It’s the result of knowledge and technology gained from Gerber’s previous Center-Drive multi-tool which was very well received when it hit the market a few years back.
The handspan is 47% narrower than competitor tools, allowing for optimum

gripping power with 2x the force, and layered construction adds durability and twice the strength of the competition. To top things off, the included sheath can be worn horizontally or vertically to suit the task and user preference.
TEST #1: PLIERS
I soon found a few various-sized rusted nuts and bolts to test both the bite of the teeth and the strength of the jaws on the pliers. The first was a bolted gate I’d had to tighten with traditional pliers, and I knew it would be a solid challenge as I’d pulled it up really tight to start with. Both the grip of the teeth and the handspan allowed me to get a good hold on the nut and loosen it, then tighten it up again, with minimal slipping. Given how tight the nut was, it was a very good result.
From there I moved on to considerably bigger nuts on scaffolding. The Dual-Force also managed to loosen them right off, and I was again surprised how effective the Gerber proved given the size of the fasteners.
TEST #2: CENTER-AXIS BIT DRIVER
With multiple interchangeable head options, the Center-Axis bit driver brings real versatility when it’s most needed. For our testing, we removed the cover of a wallmounted hot-water system and fixed a gate
latch that was in dire need of attention. We also found several other Phillips-head and flat-head applications.
The functionality of the Dual-Force was spot on and allowed for quick-and-easy repairs. I even managed to tighten up a tripod leg that had slowly been getting on the saggy side over the past month. Both the ease of rotation and application of torque and pressure onto the screw proved precise and easy. The center-axis drive allows for balanced pressure to be applied, and it flows easily and directly through the handle of the tool onto the screw being worked on.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
As you’d expect with any multi-tool, the DualForce is packed with a pile of tools: bits, blades, saws, wire cutters, a wire stripper, fasteners (small and large), chisel edge, fine/ coarse file and a fabric sheath, just to cover a few of the inclusions. But it’s the fact this tool sits so well on the hip when worn on a belt in the sheath, either vertically or horizontally, and the high functionality of the included tools and features that make the Gerber multi-tool so versatile.
The blade, file and saw are easily unlocked and folded back into place by pushing in a small locking latch at the base of the folding mechanism, keeping both the user’s hand

Makita’s 40V XGT range of tools has taken another leap forward with the 40V Max XGT Brushless 185mm Metal Cutting Saw. The ability of this saw to cut up to 6mm-thick steel angle is more than impressive. T here is also an optional blade available which will make cuts up to 12mm thick.
One of the first things you will notice when you make your first cut is how quiet the Makita is. Next will be how effortless it is to let the saw slice through the metal, thanks to the combination of the 40V Max XGT battery and high-performance and heavy-duty brushless motor. With a no-load speed of 3500rpm, and features like constant speed control, soft starts and Active Feedback Sensing Technology (AFT), cutting with this metalslicing beast is a user-friendly experience.
Fitted with an electric brake and chip collector, the 40V Max cordless metal saw is perfect for materials like aluminium, steel and stainless steel. The brushless motor has so much grunt it cuts up to two times faster than
• Constant speed control
• Quick-release chip collector
• Stainless-steel base
• eXtreme protection technology (XPT)
comparable outfits, and will do up to 160 cuts per charge in 64mm x 64mm x 6mm steel angle when fitted with a 40V max XGT 4.0Ah battery as in our testing set up.
The class-leading maximum cutting depth of 67mm makes it perfect for cutting materials like, pipe, stud, channel, strut, conduit, angle, square tubing, sheet metal, and more.
TEST #1: CUTTING
I started off with some 2mm stainless aluminium square tubing and the first cut proved we needed to ramp things up quickly to really test the saw’s capability.
We moved onto some 6mm steel flat bar. I was expecting to hear the saw strain or struggle a little, but it didn’t, and it produced

With Jamie Gray
The 40V Max XGT battery and powerful brushless motor are the driving force behind this impressive power tool.
Matt Sterland from Sterland Roofing thought the Makita was one of the best power tools he had ever used.
• Large cutting capacity (67mm depth, 6mm thickness)
• Soft start
• Electric brake
• Active Feedback Sensing Technology (AFT)
a very clean and precise edge.
We moved onto six metal variations from tubing, flat bar and eventually to our 6mm angle where the 90-degree join measured some 10mm thick. I really thought the saw would struggle, but with a slow-and-steady approach the 40V Max Brushless 185mm Metal Cutting Saw did it easily. As I repeated this cut I sped up to see or hear if I could force the saw to slow a little, but it took it all in its stride.
The feel of the Makita is great. With the softstart technology and electric brake the saw feels completely under control at all times.
The depth adjustment and a very clever guard-release lever, which sits right near the thumb, makes it easy to push the guard back as the saw approaches the cutting area. I’d love to see this on the regular circular-saw range to avoid those occasional times where the guard grabs the material.
TEST #2: STERLAND ROOFING
I had prepped Matt Sterland from Sterland Roofing to expect pretty good things from the Makita, and his eyes lit up like Christmas trees as he ripped through his first section of metal roofing. I knew he was more than impressed.
“From the initial squeeze of the trigger this Makita 40V Max 185mm saw felt great,” flashed Matt. “The soft start felt smooth, and by the time I’d finished my first cut I was instantly thinking this is one of the best power tools I’ve used over the course of my career.
“There was no fighting against the tool
or the material, and the ergonomics of the grip and trigger are spot on. The 67mm cut depth means you can do away with shears or other tools that could take between 5 and 10 minutes to create detailed cuts. The Makita can do them in around 5 seconds and 10 seconds.
“This saw is a game changer, and I will be setting up each of my crews with one of these straight away,” he said.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
It’s nothing short of amazing to see how well the tool operates, even working at its maximum material-cutting thickness. Then when you add in the safety features, ergonomics and performance of the 40V system, you have a significant power tool that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated.

Even at the maximum cut depth – a 64mm x 64mm x 6mm steel angle – the powerful brushless motor didn’t struggle.
The Makita 40V Max 185mm Brushless Metal Cut Saw could be one of Makita’s best releases to date.
Metal roofers and fabricators are going to love the smoothness and cutting power.
The saw feels completely under control at all times.
We cut material from 1mm through to 6mm in aluminium, steel and stainless with amazing results.

ALEMLUBE LOCKABLE
DIESEL
REFUELLING STORAGE & DISPENSING KITS
Alemlube has a reputation for supplying robust and reliable diesel fuel storage & dispensing lockable kits to suit a variety commercial and trade applications. The key feature of the three 400L-capacity diesel fuel storage & dispensing kits is the 4-point, key-operated security locking system built into the lid to provide the utmost security for the fitted 12V diesel fueldispensing pump and nozzle. Additionally, stored fuel security is always of vital importance, and this lockable mechanism ensures fuel pilfering is a thing of the past. Alemlube has invested serious time and resources in the research and development to address the necessary attributes to fit the product to needs of the end user. To this end, the objective was to focus on overall size, industrial design and function. For example, the need to house the pump in a recessed position, thus generating a lower centre of gravity, and meaning the tank assumes a greater degree of strength,
stability and shape, has been achieved. Ensuring the dimensions are right for carrying in the back of a ute, dual cab or service vehicle, providing a convenient on-demand refuelling and diesel transfer system, has also been achieved.
And, for extra convenience, models inclusive of a meter to assist in the accuracy and amount of diesel fuel dispensed are available. The dispensing kits consist of either Italian- or USA-made 12V diesel fuel pumps, and are available with automatic nozzles capable of dispensing 49L/min, 50L/min and 68L/min respectively. Each model can be upgraded to include an electronic fuel meter facilitating accurate information on dispensed fuel.
Standard components of the dispensing kits include battery cables with clamps, antistatic fuel-delivery hose and, as mentioned, an automatic dispensing nozzle. Dimensions are 1165mm(W) x 1165mm(D) x 566mm(H).
Heavy duty with robustly constructed polyethylene tanks inclusive of internal baffles for stability, the new 400L diesel fuel storage & dispensing kits from Alemlube are fully assembled, operational and ready to put to work.
Significant features include:
• Heavy-duty, robustly constructed polyethylene tank
• Built-in nozzle holster
• Lockable lid aids diesel-fuel security and protects dispensing-kit components
• Dispensing kit consists of a 12V pump, antistatic fuel-delivery hose, 2-metre battery cables and auto nozzle
• Forklift lift points and tie-down capability
• Tank baffles aid vehicle stability
• Suits all marques of single- and twincab utes.
A must for all contractors, trades and industries.

BLUNDSTONE – STABILITY MEETS THE FREEDOM TO MOVE WITH ROTOFLEX
Australian footwear icon Blundstone recently undertook a significant research project over several years to identify the real needs of safety footwear users – what they wanted in their boots and the problems they were experiencing with their current safetyboot choices.
The research led to a collaboration with the University of Tasmania’s School of Health Science’s Biomechanics experts. This body of work looked at the movement of the foot within a boot and resulted in the creation of RotoFlex – a range of boots where stability meets the freedom to move, allowing the wearer’s foot to rotate and the ankle to flex to avoid injury. These truly new ‘whole-of-boot’ designs were built from the ground up and created to address the concerns of wearers highlighted in the research.
The RotoFlex range of boots features a biomechanically conforming sole design,
GripTek®, which utilises a unique TPU tread pattern and super cushioned midsole, with zoned support carefully designed for allday stability, comfort and optimum grip.
“The sole has been designed with extra width in the heel and toe area to help stop ankle rolls, which is one of the key contributors to time lost. This new design also means users exert less energy when walking, which in turn reduces fatigue –another contributor to workplace injuries,” explained Adrian Blandford, Blundstone’s Global Work & Safety Range Manager.
All six styles feature a water-resistant upper, lightweight, compression-resistant composite toe cap, and an all-new zoned airflow footbed, AirCell ® . The AirCell footbed is uniquely constructed with specialised zoning, designed to activate ventilation, allowing air to be pumped through channels to the heel, arch of the foot and between toes, offering moisture
control and cushioning comfort as the wearer walks and moves, with the end result of no more sweaty feet.
The overarching comfort system, SoftCell ® , utilises a combination of specialist materials and a unique biomechanical foot-cradling design to increase stability, balance, comfort, and manoeuvrability, while reducing ankle-slip risk and fatigue.
An Australian first, the RotoFlex range also features Infinergy ® . This E-TPU material is a super-elastic energy foam from BASF which is soft but resilient – providing enhanced cushioning and reducing the impact of every step taken. Available now, RotoFlex delivers a strong foundation from the ground up, providing unbeatable fit and unrivalled comfort, perfect from day one. A QUICK EXAMPLE OF WHY YOU MIGHT CONSIDER TRADIE INSURANCE
From customers to suppliers, you’re interacting with people every day, and with that interaction comes the risk an accident could happen.
But it’s not going to happen to you, right? You know your trade like the back of your hand and accidents are for amateurs.
But what the following example shows is it does happen to Aussie tradies like you, and it’s crucial to have tradie insurance in place when it does.
A tradie was tasked with changing
a hot-water storage tank to two external heaters and reconnecting to the existing pipework*. After the job, a weld on the copper line developed a drip. The dripping water leaked onto the ceiling of the entertainment room below, causing damage.
Thankfully, they had Public Liability insurance*, designed to protect tradies against claims resulting from third-party injury or property damage due to negligent business activities.
The Insurer paid $4,972 for repair costs and the tradie went on to trade for another day.
This is a good-news story. An accident happened and the tradie remained in business due to having the right protections. But imagine how the story might’ve ended if they hadn’t sorted out their business insurance?
Don’t wait any longer. Visit bizcover. com.au to compare quotes from a whole toolbox of tradie-insurance options.
