Hearty & Healthy

5 ways to live easy this summer

Live better

(BPT) - Summertime, and the livin' is easy, as the song goes. From long, lazy days at the beach or pool, to relaxed backyard barbecues with family and friends, lighthearted living is the essence of summer. Keep that summer spirit alive, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with these ideas: * Plan a weekday wind-down hour with family and friends. Meet in a local park and bring along a simple spread of fresh grapes from California, your favorite cheese and a loaf of good French bread - and don't forget the wine. Grab a Frisbee to toss around or a kite to fly, and have a little pre-dinner summer fun.

* Head outside to enjoy your morning cup of coffee and breakfast before heading off to work. The perfect start to your summer day? Mix Greek yogurt together with fresh grapes and a sprinkle of granola. * If your community offers outdoor summer concerts, pack up a picnic dinner and head on down. Grape Picnic Salad (recipe follows) is the perfect side dish - it's quick and easy to make, travels well and you can toss it together the night before. Add a rotisserie chicken to accompany the salad and you're set! * After work, grab a book and head to the hammock or chaise in your yard, or a bench in the park, and relax for a bit. Enhance the experience

by bringing a bowl of cooling grapes to nosh on while you "chill" out with that good book. * Make summer-inspired meals at home instead of going out to eat, and enjoy a leisurely dinner on your patio where a table is always available. The recipe for Shrimp and Grape Quesadillas shown below takes just a few minutes to make, so you don't have to spend all your time in the kitchen on a beautiful summer night. Add a bagged Southwestern Salad kit to round out the meal, and you've got a delicious Latin-inspired meal in minutes! Shrimp and Grape Quesadillas Serves 4 Ingredients 1 pound large cooked shrimp, shelled 1 tablespoon lime juice

Join newly single, twenty something, Evie on a series of first-date misadventures in an effort to find her A.D.A.M. (A down-right amazing man!) It had been about two months since Evie saw John. She was out on a “play date” with her chronically platonic friend, Reggie. They had been friends since middle school and he has always been her ear whenever she needed to talk or vent. Reggie and Evie have held each other down through seven breakups, 10 crazy hookups, and 4 arrests. There was no friendship like theirs, but somehow their friendship was a problem for the people they dated. Maybe it was because they went out on “play dates,” which they would treat like any other date, minus the touchyfeely kissing and the sex. There was never any of that with Evie and Reggie. That rule was deeply established YEARS ago. When they were in the 7th grade, Reggie and Evie met and became fast friends. After a few months, and the prodding of their mutual friends, Reggie tried to kiss Evie under the bleachers at a basketball game. Evie quickly slapped Reggie’s face and reminded him that they are friends. “And if you want to continue to be my friend, this will NEVER happen again.” Reggie never tried to kiss Evie again, as his face was hurting pretty bad; throb-

bing in fact. It was at that moment he decided that he’d rather have Evie as a friend than an enemy. He brought them popsicles from the concession stand and watched her eat hers as he used his to heal his reddish cheek. Evie and Reggie were out on a “play date” when they ran into John. He was dating a new girl. By the looks of it, she barely graduated high school. They stopped and spoke for a few moments, exchanging pleasantries, until John’s date, the toddler, exclaimed that she needed to find a bathroom. John escorted her into the nearest store, but quickly returned to Evie. Reggie ran off to grab the car and she stood under a single streetlight, leaning against the pole, checking Facebook in her teal dress and heels. John tapped her on the shoulder and Evie spun around quickly, slapping him square in the face. “OW!” John shouted. Evie quickly apologized, noting that she assumed she was under attack from some strange person. After they laughed it off, John pulled a folded note from his pocket and handed it to Evie. She looked at the small note quizzically before looking back into

Chasing A.D.A.M.

John’s eyes. “What’s this?” John explained that he wrote a letter to her the day after they last saw each other. He’d been keeping the note in his wallet just in case he saw her again. Today is your lucky day, Evie thought to herself. John looked handsome as always, but it bothered Evie that he doesn’t know the relationship between Reggie and her, but he decided to try and approach her anyway. Normally that would be an immediate turn-off, but this situation calls for a bit more research. Reggie pulled up to the curb where Evie was standing with John. He hopped out, ran around, and opened the door for Evie, causing John to step aside. Once she was in, Reggie extended his hand to shake John’s. When John extended his hand, Reggie pulled him in and reminded John that Evie is loved. “She doesn’t need to be hurt a second time, man.” Reggie hopped into the driver’s side of his soot grey Jaguar. He cracked the windows and pulled off into the night, leaving John to welcome his Elementaryaged date back from the restroom.

WHEN THE BODY IS THE CANVAS Chocolate, creamy, milky, smooth, vanilla, rough, black and rouge; A blank surface, uninterrupted only by its ends. Ergonomic curves and handles winding from head to toe, the body as a canvas, Art unforgiving. Long, short, wide or thin no matter how the masterpiece is packaged, true work reigns supreme adorning temples of men and women alike. Untainted paint yearns to tell the story while wielded, a tiny sword, leaking an array of colors and outlining pictorials creating tiny vibrations under the skin. Warm and Ashy hues breaking through wild and vividly Beautiful Flowers, Big butterflies and superheroes blanket legs, backs and faces. You’ll even see a scripture or two thanking Gods for having mercy and grace. A portrait, memory or poem wrapped around arms and wrists are never out of place. Nude tones accentuated further by brand names and symbols, borders, vines and lace. Look upon you may and feast your eyes. Stare in shock and awe as if you’ve found a gold mine, But do not even for a moment think that what you see doesn’t make sense. Art is Art no matter what you or I think.

Identify hormone imbalances. Track the timing, location, shape, size and sensation of your breakouts. Hormonal acne tends to flare up at predictable times and is likely located beneath the cheekbones and along the jawline. It's also typically deep, cystic and sensitive. Talk to your dermatologist or health care provider if you think you might have hormonal related breakouts.

3. Notice how your routine affects your skin.

5. Try a skin detox treatment.

Are you noticing temple breakouts? It could be from the products in your hair. Make sure you're thoroughly cleansing your face each morning and night, making sure to concentrate on your hair line. It's also important to regularly change your sheets and pillowcases. Studies show you should wash your bedding once every week.

When your skin feels like it needs some extra TLC, head to the spa for a HydraFacialMD(R). LifeSpa's HydraFacial service deep cleans with vortex extractions and a mild chemical peel while also infusing lots of hydration. A lymphatic drainage can be added for a special focus on detoxification and an LED light treatment can also help with the clarity and smoothness of your skin.

4. Use detoxifying products. Serums with vitamins C and E, like Vivierskin(R) CE Peptides Serum, help to neutralize free radicals before they can damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. Products with antioxidants will fight against the toxins and pollutants your skin faces every day. Additionally, a detoxing bath containing Epsom salt, like mio's Liquid Yoga Bath Soak, will help to clean out your pores.

* The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. * When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. * The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. * The flag should be displayed vertically, whether indoors or out, and suspended so that its folds fall free as though the flag were staffed. * When displayed in a window of a home or a place of business, the flag should be displayed in the same way; that is, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in thestreet.

Storing and disposing of the flag * The Flag Code does not require any specific method of storage, however, over time it has become tradition to fold the flag into a triangular shape like that of a three-corner hat, with only the blue union showing. * When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. Flag etiquette was established to honor and pay tribute to our nation and its history. As such, certain uses of the American flag are considered disrespectful. The flag should never be:

* Carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. * Used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything. * The flag should never be used as apparel, bedding or drapery. * Festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Standing tall as an emblem of justice, perseverance, valor and honor, the American flag is an intricate part of what makes citizens proud to be American. Kill the 9-to-5 by turning your hobby into a thriving business (BPT) - A beloved hobby can feel like a mini vacation from everyday life. Whether it's gardening for relaxation, photography as a creative outlet or computer coding to exercise the brain, hobbies serve as an escape from stress and boredom. What if rather than a hobby being your escape, it was what you did for a career? "When you do what you love, it doesn't feel like work. However, people are intimidated by the idea of transitioning a hobby into this type of dream," says Jim Salmon, vice president of business services at Navy Federal Credit Union. "Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn't have to be difficult with the right drive and passion." Navy Federal Business Services has

helped thousands of people turn their dreams of owning a small business into reality by providing expert guidance and financial support through Business Services products. Here are some of Salmon's expert tips based on best practices he's observed through his close relationship with entrepreneurial clients: 1. Take your time. Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn't mean you have to drop everything and devote all your time to starting a business. In fact, research shows the opposite: People who keep their day jobs while starting companies are a third less likely to fail than those who abandon their full time jobs. Instead, they're tinkering, researching and cautiously testing things out to see if their idea is a viable business venture and if there is a market for their product

or service. 2. Set a timeline. Is there a season where it would make sense to test out your business venture? Or perhaps there's a transitional time in your life where you'll be looking to open a new chapter. For example, transitioning your hobby into a viable business venture a great option for active duty military personnel and veterans because they naturally begin to think about what their second career will be after retiring or leaving the Armed Forces. 3. Decide on time commitment. Decide how much time you are willing to dedicate to your new venture in the beginning. Being an entrepreneur means being your own boss which affords you unprecedented flexibility, but the effort you

put in directly effects what you get out. Keep in mind, entrepreneurship isn't just for full-time professionals. Turning a hobby into a career is a great option for military and stay-at-home parents who require flexibility in regards to working hours and location, but they may have more open time to dedicate to the transition. 4. Create a business plan. Transitioning a hobby into a profession is a lot of fun, but it's also serious business if you want to be successful. That means creating a

business plan that includes goals and plans for attaining them. This will serve as the foundation for how you strategize and build a successful business today. Plus, when it comes time to finance your budding business, a solid business plan will give you a leg up and direction for the future.

cial institution like Navy Federal Credit Union will help you learn more about small business loans and lending products that will help your small business grow. Bring your passion and your business plan - potential investors and financial institutions alike will want to see both before they make a decision.

5. Find financial backing. Depending on what type of business you want to pursue, you may need some additional funding beyond what you can afford. Establishing a relationship with a finan-

Yoga 101: How to get started with this accessible, balanced form of exercise (BPT) - More than half of all Americans exercise regularly, according to a 2015 Gallup poll, but there's still room for most people to improve their fitness. Even if you're exercising a few times a week, that may not meet recommended activity levels. If you're looking for a type of physical activity that fits easily into your lifestyle, delivers physical and mental health benefits, yet is gentle enough to be done every day, yoga may be what you're looking for. "Yoga delivers countless health

benefits, including stress reduction, improved blood circulation, flexibility and strength," says Ashley Kohler, manager of Yoga on the Lake, part of Destination Kohler, the five-star, five-diamond resort in Kohler, Wisconsin. "Doing yoga just three times a week can help you sleep better and reduce symptoms of many chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes and thyroid disorders." If you've never considered yoga, or have thought of it but weren't sure whether it's for you, Kohler offers some insights into how yoga works and the benefits it offers: * Any age is right - Yoga is good for people of every age, from children to senior citizens. In fact, many studios offer classes for new moms and their infants to help mother's post-childbirth recovery and facilitate bonding between Mom and baby. Its benefits for older demographics are also widely

recognized, from helping improve balance and flexibility, to gently improving muscle tone and strength. * You can jump right in - While many people will enjoy a one-onone experience with a certified yoga instructor, it's not necessary to take private lessons before joining a class. Studios like Yoga on the Lake offer a variety of beginner-friendly classes, as well as individual lessons for those who want a more private setting for learning the basics, or who want to work on specific personal goals. * Yoga is great for varying levels of physical ability - You should always consult your doctor before beginning any new fitness routine, especially if you have existing health conditions. That said, yoga is accessible to people of virtually all fitness levels, from those who are starting out sedentary to people who are very physically active. You don't have to be particularly flexible to get started, either; yoga gives you flexibility. And for yoga enthusiasts, yoga sculpt formatted classes provide a high-intensity yoga option. * It's about more than just improving flexibility - Better flexibility is probably one of the best-known benefits of yoga but it's far from the only one. Ultimately, yoga aims to bring together the mind, body and spirit in healthful physical activity. * Fast a few hours before class - Attempting yoga on a full stomach could lead to discomfort and cramps, so try to avoid eating an hour or two before class begins.

* Start from a place of love - "You'll go farther, faster if you take a loving attitude toward yourself and work from where you are, not from where you think you should be," Kohler advises. Don't feel pressured to perform as well as anyone else in the class. Do as much as you're able without straining or injuring yourself. * Leave distractions outside the studio - Leave cell phones and pagers in the locker room or your car; never bring them to your yoga mat. Yoga studios are also typically quiet environments in order to foster relaxation and peace, so try to leave socializing and business outside. * Yoga can be a vacation from the everyday - "Many people who practice yoga regularly view it as their 'me time,'" Kohler says. "It's a break from the demands of the everyday." Resorts like Destination Kohler offer active travelers the opportunity to immerse themselves in a truly soothing, spiritually renewing environment with a spa, yoga studio and other relaxing amenities such as golf and nature trails. Dr. Jill OΓÇÖDonnell-Tormey, chief executive officer and director of scientific affairs at the Cancer Research Institute.

How our own bodies may be the key to fighting cancer (BPT) - In August 2015, former President Jimmy Carter shared some very sad news with the world when he revealed he had been diagnosed with melanoma, and that the disease had already spread to other parts of his body. But then, something incredible happened. Just months after his announcement, Carter declared himself "cancer free." A few months later, the former president indicated he no longer needed treatment for his disease. How could this happen? One scientific explanation is that he received immunotherapy - a new type of treatment that is changing the lives of many people diagnosed with cancer.

The idea behind immunotherapy is relatively simple - get your body to fight cancer the way it was meant to by empowering and enhancing your immune system. Although immunotherapy has been in the making for more than a century, today's major advances are leading to miraculous stories like Carter's. Immunotherapy: A family's quest to advance cancer care In the early 1890s, Dr. William Coley, a prominent surgeon who specialized in cancer and practiced medicine in New York between 1890 and 1936, started noticing seemingly spontaneous remission in patients with cancer who contracted certain bacterial infections. Inspired

Published By 3Macs And A Nerd Productions 2016

by his observations, Coley began to explore a daring new idea by injecting live bacteria into a patient with an inoperable malignant tumor. The patient made a complete recovery and lived another 26 years before ultimately passing away from a heart attack. Reassured by this case, Dr. Coley then developed a safe and effective mixture of bacteria to treat patients with cancer - known as Coley's mixed bacterial toxins (or Coley's toxins). Little was known of immunology in Coley's day, but today it is understood that the immune system's response to the bacteria is likely to have been what triggered his patients' responses against cancer. Unfortunately, Coley's findings were

Issue 6 - June 2016 - Primo Fashions USA |

overshadowed by the advent of Xray, radium treatment and chemotherapy. After his death, Coley's daughter, Helen Coley Nauts, became inspired by her father's work and was able to track down hundreds of cases of microscopically confirmed cancers that had been treated with Coley's toxins. After more than three years of research, Nauts published her findings and demonstrated the truly beneficial effects of her father's treatment, rekindling the medical community's interest in immunotherapy. With a grant of $2,000 from Nelson Rockefeller, Nauts and her long-time friend, Oliver R. Grace, founded the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) in 1953. Today, nearly every major research institution in the world working in immunology and immunotherapy has scientists on staff who have been, or are currently being funded by CRI.

The road ahead: A cancer "moonshot" It is easy to call immunotherapy a miracle - and it may be in some regards - but it is also important to realize that this revolutionary new way of treating cancer is actually the result of years of research and dedication. Recognizing a need for continued funding and research to advance cancer care, Vice President Joe Biden launched the National Cancer Moonshot - an initiative dedicated to accelerating research through increased collaboration between patient advocacy groups, health care providers, and many other stakeholders in the field, like CRI. "Vice President Biden's Moonshot initiative is an exciting proposal for patients living with cancer and the immunotherapy researchers all over

the world who are working day and night to discover and develop newer, safer ways to treat this disease," says Dr. Jill O'Donnell-Tormey, chief executive officer and director of scientific affairs at the Cancer Research Institute. "We at CRI were thrilled to be invited by the Vice President's team to participate in early discussions regarding the initiative and look forward to continuing our role as an expert resource in the field of cancer immunotherapy."
