Message from the President
As spring approaches, we look forward to warmer weather, longer days, the greening of the golf course, outdoor tennis and just enjoying all the Club’s amenities.
There’s a lot going on at the PACC. The Better Billy Bunkers and the new, sand cart paths are nearing completion with anticipated finalization by the end of March. We have received final plans for the renovation of the Holly Bungalow and should be completed and open for rentals this summer. The Youth Committee has decided on the design and layout of the youth room and hope to have it open by Memorial Day. Work continues on the aquatics complex project and we look forward to breaking ground around Labor Day.
There are many opportunities for you to celebrate the arrival of spring at the PACC. Join us for one of our wine dinners, meet your friends for a glass of wine on Wednesday nights or for dinner and drinks on Friday night. Invite a prospective member for a round of golf, a set of tennis, dinner in the Chesapeake Room or a Membership Mixer.
Our goal remains the same – to exceed your expectations each time you visit the PACC.
With best wishes,
Christopher J. FanneyUp-to-Date from the General Manager

PACC Team Highlights
Team Member | Patti Savich
Have you noticed that ever-present warm greeting when you enter the Chesapeake or Linkhorn Lounge during the evening? That is our own hostess Patti Savich, who was a welcome addition to our Princess Anne family last summer. Patti hails from Pennsylvania and moved to Virginia Beach in January of 2019, after the passing of her husband, to be with her twin brother. Her first job was as a hostess at age 19 at a family restaurant before moving on to a career as a shipping coordinator. She and her husband moved to Michigan where she followed her passion for customer service and began working for Battlecreek Country Club. Here is where Patti learned she has a gift with Club members and wanted to bring that to our Princess Anne Family. We are so pleased to have Patti join us and realize what a great addition she has been. Her patience, organization and kindness are key to carrying out our Princess Anne Motto and improving your overall dining experience here at the Club. Please make sure to stop by and say hi to Patti, she will brighten your day!
Team Member | Bailey Boyce
As we move into the 2020 golf season, this will be the 14th season for Bailey and her goose chasing role with the PACC Golf Maintenance Team. Her role has lessened due to her hips, but her spirit and mind are still ready to stalk the elusive Canadian Goose.
She still likes to come to work, but it’s less often due to stress on her body. Her face still lights up walking into the shop in the morning as she greets the maintenance workers as they prepare for the day.
She still likes to travel the course, but it’s typically with a cart instead of the early morning strolls. Bailey enjoys the quiet office and the pop-in visits of Team Members, vendors or the occasional Member who stops by to say hello.
Her day usually ends with a meal and a nap before she’s carried up the steps for a restful night of sleep, only to get the chance to do it again the next day!
PACC Team Highlights
PACC Takes the Plunge!
On Saturday, February 8, for the fourth year straight, a brave group of our PACC Team Members and friends jumped into the freezing Atlantic to support the Special Olympics of Virginia! The ‘PACC Plungers’ not only helped by raising $13,854 of the festival’s recordbreaking $1.35 million, but they boldly ran into the ocean in show of their support on a balmy 43o winter day.
The plunge is much more than just an icy dip in the water. Special Olympics of Virginia provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities and health services to more than 27,000 athletes of all abilities. They are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place - one athlete, one volunteer, one family member, one plunger at a time.
Before
This year, Marketing & Communications Director Kristen Bunting was honored with our local News Channel 3's 'People Taking Action' award for her ongoing leadership in fundraising for the cause. Kristen has captained the 'PACC Plungers' since 2017 and plunged ten times previously! Her television feature on the news provided wonderful exposure of our Club's philanthropic efforts and close team bond.

CourseGolf Course & Grounds Update
By Matt Boyce | Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club GroundsWhy sand?
During the winter months you may have noticed we converted the previous crushed concrete cart paths to a sand base. I’ve gotten some questions and I’m sure you’ve asked yourself, “Why did they use sand?” For the answer, let’s rewind back to 2007…
Past
In the fall of 2006, there was a lot of energy to eliminate or reduce cart path size. In the end, it was decided that a hard surface to move golfers and the Golf Course Maintenance Team around course on wet days was necessary due to the native clay soil.
The other challenge on this site is the tight, tree lined corridors that limit space between the rough and the Out of Bounds Stakes. With tight corridors, slightly wayward shots had the opportunity to bounce off a solid concrete or blacktop cart path and potentially end up Out of Bounds. (I realize all PACC Members hit it down the fairway, so we were really thinking about all our guests who frequent the PACC!)
During the 2007 project it was decided to use formed concrete in most out of play areas, tees and slopes, and utilize crushed concrete in all other areas. Due to the dust, rock that didn’t stay in place and general aesthetics, the crushed concrete paths weren’t very popular.
Over the last ten years we have tried shells, shells with Better Billy Bunker (BBB) polymer and two types of sand. The shells broke down quickly, moved more than the crushed concrete, sources were scarce and the BBB polymer applied to the shells wasn’t very attractive!
Present
For the current project sand was selected for a couple reasons:
1. It’s soft for wayward shots and will help prevent those shots from bouncing Out-of-Bounds.
2. Mr. Liddy’s goal in 2007 was to bring back the feel of a golf course that was designed in the early 1900’s.
3. The sand cart paths fit this property based on the location just across the street from the beach.
4. The Club has tried to limit the amount of artificial amenities on and around the course to keep the integrity of the facility and Mr. Liddy’s vision for the Princess Anne.
Future
The new cart paths will allow the Golf Course Maintenance Team to efficiently add drainage, add sand and use equipment that is already on site to maintain the cart paths in the future.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate the project during daily play and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at mboyce@princessannecc.com
The Golden Rules
The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.
NEW CHANGES TO THE RULES OF GOLF: A REVIEW
Major Changes to the Rules of Golf took place January 1, 2019. The Overall Goals for the Rules of Golf
• to be more easily understood and applied by all golfers
• to be more consistent, simple and fair
• to reinforce the game’s longstanding principles and character
Visit the USGA website (www.usga.org) to see examples and videos of the new rules. Please email any questions to rules4golf@gmail.com.
How the 2019 Rules of Golf Effect the Putting Green
• If the ball had been lifted and replaced on its original spot before it moved, the ball must always be replaced on its original spot, regardless of what caused it to move. You might say that once a ball has been lifted and replaced, it owns that spot.
• The ball must be played from its new spot only if the ball had not been lifted and replaced before it moved and it was moved by natural forces (i.e. wind, gravity). A ball on the putting green that has been moved accidentally must always be replaced with no penalty.
• When a ball at rest is moved by natural forces, such as the wind, it is normally played as it lies because its movement is considered a continuation of the previous stroke, as no person or object affected where the ball lies.
Repairing Damage on the Putting Green
New Rule: Rule 13.1c(2) allows repair of almost any damage on the green:
• “Damage on the putting green” is defined to include all types of damage such as ball-marks, shoe damage (including spike marks), indentations from a club or flagstick, animal damage, etc., except aeration holes, natural surface imperfections or natural wear of the hole.
When to Replace a Ball that Moves on the Putting Green
New Rule: Rule 13.1d revises the procedure for when a ball on the putting green is moved by wind, water or other natural forces, so that it must sometimes be replaced and sometimes be played from its new spot:
• Because putting greens are specially prepared for playing the ball along the ground, the Rules allow the player to do things on the green that are not allowed anywhere else:
• The player may mark, lift and clean a ball on the green at any time, remove sand and loose soil on the green and repair old hole plugs and ball-marks on the green.
• Given this philosophy of allowing players to try to have a smooth surface for rolling the ball, there is no conceptual reason for prohibiting repair of other types of damage (whether made by players, animals, maintenance staff, etc.).
Touching the Line of Play on the Putting Green
New Rule: The previous prohibition of touching the line of play on the putting green is eliminated:
• There is no longer a penalty for merely touching the line of play on the putting green (the term “line of play” applies everywhere on the course including the putting green and the term “line of putt” is no longer used).
• But the player is still subject to the prohibition of improving his or her line of play on the putting green (see Rule 8.1a, as limited by 8.1b).
• No advantage is gained if a player or his or her caddie merely touches the surface of the putting green on the line where the ball will be played.
Ball Played from the Putting Green Hits Unattended Flagstick in the Hole
New Rule: Under Rule 13.2a(2):
• There is no longer a penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits a flagstick left in the hole.
• Players are not required to putt with the flagstick in the hole; rather, they continue to have the choice to have it removed (which includes having someone attend the flagstick and remove it after the ball is played).
• Allowing a player to putt with the flagstick in the hole without fear of penalty should generally help speed up play.
Dear Rules Guru: If I leave the flagstick in, my ball rolls in the hole but is leaning against the flagstick, is it considered holed?
Rules Guru: A ball is considered holed if any part of the ball is below the surface of the putting green. There are times when the ball can be touching the flagstick but the flagstick is not centered and is leaning. This situation could prevent the ball from being below the surface of the green; in this case the ball is not holed even though it is leaning against the flagstick.
SUMMARY
ON THE PUTTING GREEN NEW RULE/OLD RULE
Replacing the ball if moved inadvertently or by nature, after being lifted, cleaned and replaced.
Repairing damage on the putting green.
Touching the line of the putt on the green.
New rule: Ball has to be replaced in the original spot.
Old rule: In certain circumstances the ball could not be moved back to the original spot.
New rule: Spikes marks, animal damage etc. can be fixed (cannot fix natural imperfections such as bumps or hollows).
Old rule: Could only repair a ball pitch mark or old hole plugs.
New rule: Allowed as long as it does not improve the conditions.
Old rule: Not permitted (loss of hole / 2 stroke penalty).
New rule: No penalty.
Ball on the green striking unattended flagstick
Old Rule: Loss of hole / 2 stroke penalty.
“There is no longer a penalty for merely touching the line of play on the putting green.”

Virginia Beach Junior League
The Virginia Beach Junior League is a great opportunity for junior golfers, ages 13 and under, to come together to learn and compete. There will be six teams in our Virginia Beach League this season: Princess Anne Country Club Team Blue and Team Black, Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club, Bayville Golf Club and Broad Bay Country Club Team Red and Team White. The season will include eight matches and four practice sessions. The format of the matches a two-man team Captain's Choice with a max score of triple-bogey, which allows for a fun and low pressure way of playing. New for 2020! Due to the participation in recent years, PACC will have two teams in the Virginia Beach Junior League! (Ages 6-13)

Spring is right around the corner which means it’s almost time for the bubble to come down! The bubble is scheduled to be taken down in early April, but, as always, it will be weather dependent. We will keep everyone informed with any changes along the way.
Ladies Spring Lunch League will start mid-April. The schedule has not been released yet, but the “B” Team (3.0-3.5 players) will play at 9:30 am on Wednesdays and the “A” Team (4.0-4.5 players) will play on Fridays at 9:30 am. All ladies are encouraged to stay for lunch after the matches.
Lastly, spring season is also the start of Cup season which kicks off with Virginia Cup Saturday, April 26 at the Country Club of Virginia and the Fun Cup the very next day at Cavalier Golf & Yacht. For the rest of our Cup events and other tournaments, make sure to check out our 2020 Calendar of Events on the next page!
Nathan's Tip of the Month | Play Your Court
The optimal return of serve position for the one-handed & two-handed backhand
Often times it’s ideal to have the non-dominant hand on the throat of the racquet while preparing to strike the ball. However, if you have a two-handed backhand and you’re returning serve this strategy is not ideal. The time it takes to drop the hand and properly execute the grip change takes too long. Simply start with both hands on the grip w/ the bottom hand in your forehand grip and the top hand in a continental grip. From here, it will be significantly easier to prepare for the backhand.
For the one-handed backhand, starting with the non-dominant hand on the throat of the racquet is ideal. It won’t impede the forehand and will help ensure the spacing and grip change for the one-hander is successful. Next time you’re on court returning serve, focus on your starting position and where your hands are located in order to give you the most time possible to return serve.

Self-myofascial Release (SMR)
By Sabine ElbeSelf myofascial release (SMR) is a stretching technique that uses pointed pressure to diminish tension in the fascia, the connective tissue layer that covers our skeletal muscles. When you do SMR, it can feel similar to a deep tissue massage; it’s slightly painful while you’re doing it, but afterwards your muscles feel looser and more relaxed. The aim, whether you use a foam roller, tennis ball or lacrosse ball, is to release tightness of the fascia by massaging it out. When the fascia is “released,” it’s thought that our muscles have greater range of motion and less soreness. As you’re moving over your foam roller or ball, you’re improving blood flow and lymphatic circulation in addition to stimulating the stretch reflex in the muscles you’re targeting. The result tends to be feeling less overall tension and pain in your body.
SMR can be used before exercise to promote blood flow and range of motion, after a workout or on it’s own to promote recovery.
