As spring approaches, we look forward to warmer weather, longer days, the greening of the golf course, outdoor tennis and the pool opening this summer.
We have a lot to be grateful for; the COVID-19 vaccine is here and I hope that everyone who is eligible has gotten their shots, we welcomed 19 new families into the PACC Family in December and January, WOW, and we have a wonderful Club that is a home away from home and safe haven during these unprecedented times.
There is a lot going on at PACC. If you have not had a chance, please check out the construction of the new Aquatics Center from the Clubhouse or the Fitness Center. The Aquatics Center is a state-of-the-art complex that will have something special for everyone. The construction is going well, though with a few hiccups, but we still hope to open by Memorial Day. Mardy Colling and Executive Chef Geoff Benson have been performing their magic with new dinner specials each week, a to-go deli menu and pop-up family dinners.
There are many opportunities for you to celebrate the arrival of spring at PACC. Join us for one of our wine dinners, meet your friends for a glass of wine on Wednesday nights or enjoy dinner and drinks on Friday night. Invite a prospective member for a round of golf, a set of tennis or dinner in the Chesapeake Room or on Breakers Boulevard.
If you have not already done so, please thank our Team for keeping our PACC running in such great shape during these tumultuous times with a smile and welcome hello.
With best wishes, Christopher J. Fanney

Farewell Letter from Matt Boyce
To the Members of Princess Anne,
By now, each of you are probably aware that I have given the Club notice of my resignation and I will now focus my professional efforts on my lawncare treatment business GREENSWARD. Due to COVID-19 and the timing of my departure, I might not be able to see all of the Members who have helped me grow over the last 15 years. I don’t plan on being a stranger, but with my current paradigm switch, I will not be a daily figure on campus. In an effort to rekindle memories and show appreciation for just a portion of the people who have shaped me, I would like to relay just a couple stories and thoughts from my time at the Club. Please take these in context and know that these are shared with all due respect to the individuals who were involved.
-After approving the golf course renovation in the fall of 2006, I thought it would be a great idea to clear underbrush to the right of #4 fairway, so you could see the green. It was a great idea until I was sitting in front of the Chesapeake Bay Board, with pictures on the screen, sinking in my seat and Gary Beck turning around and saying, "You’ll look good in an orange jump suit.” Thank you for the bail money Gary!!
To date, our efforts of planting long leaf pines, sable minor palms, creating no mow areas and other details, we have completely flipped the relationship. The City, along with the Chesapeake Bay Board, are happy with our initiatives moving forward.
-After multiple complaints of cutting the fairways too low and vetting my desire to have short, tight fairways to Hunter Sims, he put everything in perspective. He relayed that “you don’t play rock and roll to a bunch of folks who like polka.” Well noted Mr. Sims!
-In an effort to get the 2007 golf course renovation jump started, Tim Liddy and I rallied to lay sod, as compared to sprigging (which is inexpensive, but slow), #14 fairway. Without permission from pretty much anyone, we moved forward with the sod and the hole was quickly finished with instant gratification. After an understanding, but very uncomfortable, phone call with Gary Beck and Mr. Shonk, I was prepared for the worst. Two weeks later, it was voted on and approved to sod the entire golf course during the project. Crisis averted!
-During a Saturday morning golf event playing with Pat Shuler, I was approached by a member in the group behind me about a question on the course. Before I could even answer, Pat stepped in and said, “Listen, he’s currently playing golf and will not be answering your questions, leave him alone while he’s playing golf.” Stunned, the member walked away and never mentioned anything again. Thanks Pat!
-Post 2007 renovation, there was a concerted effort to increase boundaries and shield the course through plant material. Ms. Kathy Thomson was instrumental in our plan. She taught me the natural feel of indigenous plant material and how it can be used to provide natural color and screens around the course. I am indebted Kathy!
-Off campus experiences such as golf trips with multiple groups, off shore fishing trips and other experiences created friendships and bonds with Members whom are now friends. You know who you are, thank you!
-I always enjoyed the day to day relationships with the early risers and dedicated golfers who enjoyed the site of fresh cut greens and smoothly raked bunkers. I cherished those first tee conversations, thank you!
-I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the person who brought me on campus, Mr. Bill Shonk. Through projects, challenges, day to day operations and general friendship I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to grow, your mentorship and your friendship. No one loves this Club more than you which resonates through our Team and your dedication to this facility. My humble gratitude!
With respectful full disclosure, I will relay that after internships at two PGA Tour events, two multimillion-dollar renovations with national publicity and two US Open Championship preparations, I felt I was prepared to go anywhere. A recession, having children and falling in love with Virginia Beach put a stop to any further plans to move. Support through friendship and personal experiences such as fishing trips, golf trips and off campus relationships kept Lindy, Chloe, Keagan, Bailey and myself in Virginia Beach. I thank each of you for your support, your wisdom, your ways of challenging me, your mentorship and the love you showed myself and my family. I am truly grateful!
As my days end as the Lead Goat Herder at Princess Anne Country Club, I don’t plan on saying goodbye and don’t plan on being a stranger. I will reside in Virginia Beach and continue to be an ally for success for Mr. Shonk, the new Director of Golf Course Maintenance, The Green Committee and the Golf Course Maintenance Team if they should need me. If you’d like to see more of me, GREENSWARD would be happy to help you with any residential or commercial treatments to your lawn, trees/shrubs and mosquitos. (Yes, that is a shameless plug, and tell your friends!)
My sincere best, Matt

PACC Team Highlights
Team Member | Jerry Burton
Have you noticed that tall, welcoming gentleman pouring your favorite wine in the Chesapeake or Linkhorn Lounge? That is our Restaurant Assistant Manager Jerry Burton, who was a welcome addition to our Princess Anne family in 2019. Jerry was raised in Chesapeake and grew up surfing and swimming in Virginia Beach. He was a competitive swimmer, competing both locally and nationally. Aer graduating from Hickory High School he attended the University of Connecticut for two years where he continued to swim while going to school. Aer leaving UConn, he attended Tidewater Community College and graduated with an Associates of Science degree in 2017. During his education, exploring the endless possibilities of where to focus his studies, a geography professor introduced a term called terroir. As the professor explained terroir's effects on a region’s climate, soils and terrain, he also explained how the culmination of those individual components effects the taste of the region's wine. Jerry's fascination of wine and wine production was sparked! In 2019, he passed the Introductory Sommelier Exam. Although he is delayed in taking the Certified Sommelier Exam due to COVID-19, he continues to prepare for the day he can take the Court of Master Sommeliers Certified Exam. Jerry continues his wine education through the Wine Spirit Education Trust program. When he's not here at the Club, or enjoying a glass of wine, he enjoys saltwater fishing and spending quality time with his girlfriend Elaina and miniature English bulldog Ellie.

PACC Takes the Plunge!
After
On Saturday, February 6, for the fih year straight, a brave group of our PACC Team Members and friends jumped into the freezing Atlantic to support the Special Olympics of Virginia! The ‘PACC Plungers’ not only helped by raising $7,357 of the festival’s $808,420, they boldly ran into the ocean in show of their support on a balmy 54o winter day.
Special Olympics of Virginia provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities and health services to more than 27,000 athletes of all abilities. They are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place - one athlete, one volunteer, one family member, one plunger at a time.
Congratulations to our PACC Team for their fundraising efforts and bravery in support of this wonderful cause!

LET'S GO GREEN!
We aspire to make a positive impact on our community and make more environmentally mindful choices to protect our beautiful planet. We would love your support!
It doesn't need to be hard. Simple steps to reduce, reuse and recycle can add up. Using less paper is a great place to start. Did you know...
• Pulp and paper is the third-largest air, water and land polluter among all industries in the US.
• The U.S. cuts down approximately 68 million trees each year to produce paper products.
• On average Americans use 7 trees per person a year in paper, wood and other products made from trees.
We can make a difference! We are encouraging you to opt in for digital newsletters and emailed statements (versus printed/mailed). This will not only save your Club money, it will help save our world.
Help us go green by opng for email statements!

C rseGolf Course & Grounds Update
By Matt Boyce | Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club Grounds
Throwback
As my time at the Club approaches a close date, I was going through some old "Princess Anne Living" newsletters and found this first one I craed to the Membership. How time flies when you’re having fun!
I also included an old course picture from my first year. It’s been my pleasure!
Matt Boyce Lead Goat Herder Princess Anne Country Club
As my first month at The Princess Anne comes to a close, I want to reflect on the experiences I’ve encountered. First, the Membership cares about the Club. I’ve had several conversations with several Members about golf course enhancement. There really is a push to get this golf course in the best condition it can possibly be. And, quite honestly, I’ve heard several ways to achieve the goal. I am listening to all the ideas and working to improve course conditions. In my second day on the job, I was fortunate to team up with Stan Zontek of the USGA Green Section. Myself, several Members of the Greens Committee and Mr. Shonk ventured through all aspects of the Princess Anne golf course maintenance program. Mr. Zontek outlined his thoughts in a great report that was posted in both locker rooms and can be available at request. I strongly encourage everyone to pick up a copy and read through it.
In other conversations I’ve had with Members a hot topic that comes up often is attention to detail. This seems to be an ongoing source of concern, and my answer to these questions is I agree that it is an eye sore and I will put it on my list. I do see a need for improvement in the overall look of the golf course. There are trees down on the right hand side of #1 that need cleaned up, the 16th pond does need a make over and there are weeds around the tees and greens. I agree with all of those suggestions and I am working in that direction. For instance, we removed 24 stumps throughout the golf course and are currently working towards cleaning out the beds on #3, #13 and #15.
In conclusion, there are areas on the golf course that just need a little “Tender Love & Care.” I am working towards maximizing our resources to achieve the standards that have been set.

The Golden Rules
Dear Rules Guru, I have noticed that Princess Anne has a set of local rules for the golf course. Do I really have to know more rules of golf? Can you please tell me why local rules are important and provide me with a list for our course. This will help me anticipate problems as I approach each hole.
–Signed “Local Golfer”
Dear Local Golfer, Because PACC has a number of unusual scenarios, the local rules are there to tell the player how to proceed.
Local Rules for the PACC
The Rules of the United Stated Golf Associaon govern play. In addion to the USGA rules of golf, the following Local Rules are in effect:
1. OUT OF BOUNDS | In addition to white stakes, lines and boundary fences, the inside edges of the following roads define out of bounds: holes #4 to the le of the green, #5, #6 behind the green, #11 behind the green, #12 to the right of the hole, and #16 behind the green. The maintenance area between holes #6 & #7 is out of bounds, defined by the fence. The ground le of the water hazard on hole #17 is out of bounds.
2. ELEVATED POWER LINES | A ball striking an elevated power line crossing a hole MUST be replayed without penalty. (Note: This most often occurs on the tee shot on # 8, the tee shot on #9 and the second shot on #12.)
3. HOLE #3 DROPPING ZONE | As an additional option to Rule 17-1, a player may use the drop zone short and le of the pung green for a ball that last crossed the penalty area between the blue stakes at the greenside bunker. (Note: The purpose of this dropping zone is to give the player an option other than dropping in the bunker or playing under stroke and distance.)
4. HOLE # 4 – DROPPING ZONE | As an additional option to Rule 17-1, a player may use the drop zone for any ball coming to rest in the penalty area. (Note: If the ball crosses into a penalty area marked red, the player may use the dropping zone or may use the two club length option from where the ball last crossed the line.)
5. FANS | Fans are temporary immovable obstructions. Relief is allowed for stance, swing and for line of play if the fan is between the ball and the hole.
6. DITCHES and FENCES – HOLES #2, #9, #12 and #15 | The fences and the area between the fences, including the ditches and roads, are one obstruction. The areas are identified, but not defined by, blue stakes. Free relief under Rule 16.
To play faster, know your relief options and understand your course. All PACC golfers must know the Local

Rules
Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.
7. ROADS CROSSING HOLES | A ball which crosses a public road defined as out of bounds and comes to rest on a different part of the course beyond that road is out of bounds. (Note: This most often occurs on hole #4 when the ball crosses the road and comes to rest on hole #5. The ball is out of bounds.)
8. CART PATHS | Cart paths covered by sand are “the general area;” no free relief. 9. DRIVING RANGE NET AND POSTS | are an obstruction. Free relief under Rule 16 for swing, stance and lie. No relief for line of play.
10. OBSTRUCTIONS | the restroom area on hole #3, the halfway house at the 10th tee; the restroom area on hole #15. These structures, including paved areas and cart paths, are each deemed to be single obstructions. Free relief from the obstruction is available. 11. ALTERNATVE TO STROKE AND DISTANCE FOR LOST BALL OR BALL OUT OF BOUNDS | Local rule E-5 found in Committee Procedures is in effect.

Tennis Talk
Tennis
From the Courts
Surely it can’t be almost time for the bubble to come down, didn’t we just get it up? Well we all know why it has had a short stint this year, but the good news is the repairs to the blower motor have given it a new lease on life! The bubble is scheduled to be taken down in early March, but, as always, it will be weather dependent. Then courts 2, 3 and 4 will receive a complete resurface before play can resume on them. A company will come in and pulverize the hardened surface, scrape off the dead material and then put about 20 tons of new material down with fresh lines. We will keep everyone informed with their progress along the way.
Ladies Spring Lunch League will be starting soon. The schedule has not been released yet, but it will start mid-April. The “B” Team (3.0-3.5 players) will play at 9:30 am on Wednesdays and the “A” Team (4.0-4.5 players) will play on Fridays at 9:30 am. All ladies are encouraged to stay for lunch aer the matches.
Lastly, spring season is also the start of Cup season which kicks off with Virginia Cup Saturday, April 26 at The Country Club of Virginia. The very next day is the Fun Cup. For the rest of our Cup events and other tournaments, make sure to check our 2021 tennis calendar of events on the next page!
Nathan's Tip of the Month | How to Successfully Poach in Doubles
When playing doubles we can oen feel lost up at net at times and the last thing we want to do is poach. Poaching, the act of intercepting and attacking a passing ball, can be one of the most important weapons in doubles and is a must on the court. By spong visual cues or “tells,” we can make a safe bet and poach successfully. Below are several visual cues that you can spot to help get you moving up at net.
1. When you see their back you must attack! This cue is good for singles or doubles. Any time the opponent on the baseline is in distress we should look to move in and attack or if you're already at the net, poach. If the opponent is stretched out exposing their back, they can’t see you and they’re completely defensive, therefore a poach is a great play. In addition, if your opponent doesn’t have the ability to coil and load their groundstroke, their offense is also limited. Other visual cues include; you see a hand reaching out to scoop up a dropshot, the opponent on their backfoot looking to block the ball or they are simply defending pace such as a first serve, a poach is in order!
2. Look for the dipper! Oen, when we’re located at the hot seat (service line), our first instinct is defense. However, if our partner has a reliable dipper (a ball with heavy topspin that dips at the opponents feet), we should look to play offense. Since we can’t look back at what our partner is doing, this is all about the visual cues in front of us! Look for the opponents racquet to dip below the net, due to the dipper. From there, push forward, pinching the net, to cut off the rising ball. It’s a high-level play, but once we’ve learned what to look for, it’s a play we can all easily execute.
3. The middle solves the riddle! Anytime our partner serves middle T or attacks through the middle we should look for the poach. Balls through the middle of the court are difficult to create angles off of, so your opponent oen has to play back through the middle or simply lob. By poaching and looking for the overhead, you’ll be sure you’re in the right position to finish things off.
Next time you’re on the court, look for the poach and dominate doubles positioning to ensure the win! For more tips like this from Nathan go to www.playyourcourt.com

Lifestyles & Fitness
Fitne
If you’re finding it hard to get back to the gym, not to worry! At-home workouts can be just as effective as gym workouts and intermittent workouts, or short workouts performed throughout the day, may even be more beneficial than a single bout of exercise.
Besides the obvious benefits of exercise, spreading sessions throughout your day increases blood flow and mental alertness, help to bring hydration to your joints and fascia and can improve your flexibility and posture.
TRIGGER WORKOUT TIPS
1. Set a trigger. Use a timer, an object, or walking into a certain room to prompt you to exercise. TV commercial breaks are also a great prompt.
2. Make a plan. You can use one exercise for the full session, switching to a different muscle group for the next session, or run through a short series of exercises at each session.
3. Limit yourself. You want to have the energy and desire to repeat these mini-workouts throughout your day, so it’s not necessary to completely fatigue yourself at each session.
4. Be consistent. The more oen you do intermittent workouts, the more natural they will become.
The following workouts can be done as intermittent workouts, or can be used as single-session workouts. For intermittent workouts, choose one exercise per session, or repeat the full series two or more times/day. Check out our Instagram feed (PrincessAnneCC) to see the workouts in action!
