PACC Takes the Plunge!

On Saturday, February 5, for the sixth year straight, a brave group of our PACC Team Members and friends jumped into the freezing Atlantic to support the Special Olympics of Virginia! The ‘PACC Plungers’ not only helped by raising $24,363 of the festival’s $1.1 million, but they boldly ran into the ocean in show of their support on a balmy 39o winter day.

The plunge is much more than just an icy dip in the water. Special Olympics of Virginia provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities and health services to more than 27,000 athletes of all abilities. They are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place - one athlete, one volunteer, one family member, one plunger at a time.

This event provides wonderful exposure of our Club's philanthropic efforts and close team bond. Congratulations to Captain Kristen Bunting and our entire PACC Team for their fundraising efforts and bravery in support of this wonderful cause!

Poa Control | Every golf facility in the transition zone struggles to manage Poa Annua, a grassy weed which can be near impossible to control, especially in our climate. At PACC we have been battling it since October. It takes time and effort for us to accomplish our goal of complete eradication. In October, we applied a product that restricts the new poa seed from growing. We made another application in December that will carry us through until spring. You most likely saw some paint throughout the property. This was used to delineate areas that should and should not be sprayed. The product cannot be used on or near our putting surfaces which forces us to then apply another product in the painted area around the greens. This is a fight that we will continue to battle until we approach spring.

By Jordan Spitler | Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club Grounds

Spring is right around the corner, here’s what’s been happening throughout the course.

Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022 16

Our teams' philosophy is to try and impact our golf conditions as little as we can. With that being said, there are going to be times throughout the season that it may seem as though we have excessive amounts of sand on our greens. In order for us to topdress only once from June through August, we have to put out large amounts of sand in the spring and fall/ winter seasons. It always helps if it’s warm and rainy after any topdressing, but sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. I look forward to my second season here at PACC. My team and I will continue to try and improve your experience each and every day. Try to keep it in the short grass!

Aerification and Toppdressing of our greens | With the flush of new growth and spring in our crosshairs, it is time to aerify and toppdress our greens. You may question why this needs done. There is so much to love about aerification and what it does for our putting surfaces. A few reasons we do it: it lets them breathe by getting oxygen into the root zone, it creates channels for new roots to grow, it creates channels for better drainage, and it relives compaction. The second step to this process; topdressing is equally as important. In order for our putting surfaces to maintain their current conditions, we must match the amount of sand input with the amount of organic matter our greens accumulate in a year's time. In order for us to improve our firmness and greens health, we have to put out even more sand.

Spring is Right Around The Corner

DryJect | The first week of March we are going to introduce a new process to our PACC putting surfaces. The process is called Dryject. It uses the water pressure of our irrigation to inject a hole, then backfills it with sand. This process will create long channels of sand that aid in drainage, firmness and greens health. Please refer to this video

CourseGolf Course & Grounds Update

• The player may mark, lift and clean a ball on the green at any time, remove sand and loose soil on the green and repair old hole plugs and ball-marks on the green.

New Rule: Rule 13.1c(2) allows repair of almost any damage on the green:

• Because putting greens are specially prepared for playing the ball along the ground, the Rules allow the player to do things on the green that are not allowed anywhere else:

How the 2019 Rules of Golf Effect the Putting Green

Repairing Damage on the Putting Green

When to Replace a Ball that Moves on the Putting Green

• “Damage on the putting green” is defined to include all types of damage such as ball-marks, shoe damage (including spike marks), indentations from a club or flagstick, animal damage, etc., except aeration holes, natural surface imperfections or natural wear of the hole.

• The ball must be played from its new spot only if the ball had not been lifted and replaced before it moved and it was moved by natural forces (i.e. wind, gravity). A ball on the putting green that has been moved accidentally must always be replaced with no penalty.

• Given this philosophy of allowing players to try to have a smooth surface for rolling the ball, there is no conceptual reason for prohibiting repair of other types of damage (whether made by players, animals, maintenance staff, etc.).

The Golden Rules

17 Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022

In 2019 there were major changes made to the Rules of Golf. The rules are streamlined, easier to understand, less penalizing and have a positive impact on the game of golf and the pace of play. Improve your game, lower your score, speed up your pace of play and be ready for spring golf by reviewing these changes.

• When a ball at rest is moved by natural forces such as the wind, it is normally played as it lies because its movement is considered a continuation of the previous stroke, as no person or object affected where the ball lies.

• If the ball had been lifted and replaced on its original spot before it moved, the ball must always be replaced on its original spot, regardless of what caused it to move. You might say that once a ball has been lifted and replaced, it owns that spot.

New Rule: Rule 13.1d revises the procedure for when a ball on the putting green is moved by wind, water or other natural forces, so that it must sometimes be replaced and sometimes be played from its new spot:

“There is no longer a penalty for merely touching the line of play on the putting green.”

Submit by emailing us at rules4golf @gmail.com

-The Mighty Rules Gurus

Old rule: Could only repair a ball pitch mark or old hole plugs.

Old rule: Not permitted (loss of hole / 2 stroke penalty).

Dear Rules Guru: If I leave the flagstick in, my ball rolls in the hole but is leaning against the flagstick, is it considered holed?

Ball on the green striking unattended flagstick.

SUMMARY

• There is no longer a penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits a flagstick left in the hole.

• Players are not required to putt with the flagstick in the hole; rather, they continue to have the choice to have it removed (which includes having someone attend the flagstick and remove it after the ball is played).

Until next time, keep the questions coming!

New rule: Ball has to be replaced in the original spot.

• No advantage is gained if a player or his or her caddie merely touches the surface of the putting green on the line where the ball will be played.

Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022 18

Old rule: In certain circumstances the ball could not be moved back to the original spot.

ON THE PUTTING GREEN

Old Rule: Loss of hole / 2 stroke penalty.

FOR A OFSLEEVEFREEBALLS

New Rule: The previous prohibition of touching the line of play on the putting green is eliminated: There is no longer a penalty for merely touching the line of play on the putting green (the term “line of play” applies everywhere on the course including the putting green and the term “line of putt” is no longer used).

• Allowing a player to putt with the flagstick in the hole without fear of penalty should generally help speed up play.

Rules Guru: A ball is considered holed if any part of the ball is below the surface of the putting green. There are times when the ball can be touching the flagstick but the flagstick is not centered and is leaning. This situation could prevent the ball from being below the surface of the green; in this case the ball is not holed even though it is leaning against the flagstick.

Replacing the ball if moved inadvertently or by nature, after being lifted, cleaned and replaced.

New rule: Spikes marks, animal damage etc. can be fixed (cannot fix natural imperfections such as bumps or hollows).

Ball Played from the Putting Green Hits Unattended Flagstick in the Hole

NEW RULE/OLD RULE

New rule: Allowed as long as it does not improve the conditions.

Touching the Line of Play on the Putting Green

Touching the line of the putt on the green.

Repairing damage on the putting green.

New rule: No penalty.

• But the player is still subject to the prohibition on improving his or her line of play on the putting green (see Rule 8.1a, as limited by 8.1b).

New Rule: Under Rule 13.2a(2):

Keith is originally from Suffolk, VA but resides in Virginia Beach. He graduated Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in 2015. Keith found his love for the game at age eight. While at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, he helped the golf team win the only two state championship titles in the school’s history. Keith played golf all four years at Virginia Wesleyan and holds the single round scoring record of 63. Prior to joining the Princess Anne Country Club Team, Keith spent six years working at Elizabeth Manor before being transferred to Williamsburg Golf Club. He is currently working towards becoming a member of the PGA of America. Keith will help manage our day-to-day golf operations, assist with tournament operations and our junior golf program, as well as help manage the PASMGA.

Carter Morgan, Golf Operations

Jackie also rejoins our Team for her second season, although in a greater role, moving on from intern to PGA Associate Golf Professional. Jackie is currently finishing her bachelor’s degree at Marshall University where she is gearing up for her senior season as Captain of the Marshall University Women’s Golf Team. Jackie will help manage the day-to-day operations in the golf shop, the PALG, our junior golf program and Sunday Mixed Pairs. Jackie will join our team full-time the first week of May, once she has completed her final semester. We look forward to Jackie returning this summer!

Congratulations to our 2021 Pop-Pop Co-Champions the teams of Lee Barthold III, Lee Barthold IV, Lee Summers and Mike Hays and Andrew Alberico, Taylor Ratliff, Nick Szoke and Mark Horton. Both teams shot 13 under par to claim a share of the title. A great day was had by all with 96 players who enjoyed the 70-degree day.

Evan Beck on his most recent honor of being selected as 2021 VSGA Golfer of the Year. Evan’s remarkable season included victories in the Eastern Amateur, Virginia State Open, VSGA Mid-Am Championship as well as the National Senior/Junior Championship. To cap it all off, Evan shot a tournament course record 58 this fall in the 2021 Vincent G. Thomas Men’s Member-Member, a round that be a part of PACC folklore for years to come. Congratulations Evan on a great year, one that is well deserved.

Congratulations to Billy Paulson for being the last man standing in the 2021 Men’s Shootout. Billy outlasted one of the strongest fields to date to claim the title. Billy navigated his way quietly around the front nine without getting into any trouble before turning it on, on the back nine. Paulson would play the back at even par, including a net birdie four at the final hole to defeat runner up John Hawa. Congratulations Billy and thank you to all of our participants.

The 10th Tee hours of operation will be 10:00 am – 4:30 pm, Friday – Sunday and will be weather dependent. The flat top grill will not be operating during this time, but you may still enjoy most of Missy’s favorites! The 10th Tee will open back up with regular summer hours starting April 4.

I wish you the best of luck with your tennis journey and hope you can implement the vision of establishing your consistent and ideal strike zone.

Lorenzo's Tip | Strike Zone

From the Courts

Tennis

Do you want to be more consistent with your ground strokes and miss less balls? Start visualizing having a consistent strike zone.

2. Letting the ball come down to where you can use the balls gravity and weight to establish more top spin and give you more time. Of course, there is a time to hit on the rise, but we are talking about consistency on your ground strokes.

25 Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022

Ladies’ Sip N’ Serve clinic and Mixed Troubles clinic will continue throughout the spring, to get everyone active and ready for the summer! Lastly, spring season is also the start of Cup season which kicks off with Fun Cup on Sunday, April 24 at Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club and Virginia Cup on Saturday, April 30 at Norfolk Yacht & Country Club. For the rest of our Cup events and other tournaments, make sure to check out our 2022 Calendar of Events on the next page.

What do I mean by that? In my years of teaching, I've seen a lot of players hitting their balls at different heights such as knee level, hip level, shoulder leve and, yes, sometimes even above on their shoulders in their ground strokes.

Spring is right around the corner which means it’s almost time for the bubble to come down! The bubble is scheduled to be taken down on April 4, but, as always, it will be weather dependent. We will keep everyone informed with any changes along the way.

1. Learning to master your footwork not just by moving laterally but also vertically (up/down). This will allow you to hit the ball exactly where you want it.

Having to deal with that can lead to errors since you always have to adjust your swing. This is why establishing a consistent strike zone will help with your consistency.

Keep moving your feet!

There are two things that we need to do focus on to establish your ideal strike zone.

Wilson Clash and Blade families are back in the shop with new designs and improved technology. Check out the details below:

The new Wilson Clash v2 allows players to increase power without compromising consistency or control. Its updated carbon fiber technology allows extreme flexibility and best-in-class stability while swinging freely. Some construction enhancements in the tip and a 16%* larger sweet spot also allow for more precise shot making and a softer feel on impact. The Clash v2 features has a new burgundy matte paint job, they’re calling it a “tidal red finish with an embossed Clash logo to create a visual and tactile experience unlike any other”.

27 Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022

Wilson kept the revolutionary layup technology that was originally used in the Blade v8 under the name FeelFlex. It’s now called FortyFive and, in addition to increasing stability, it helps the racquet bend in ways that compliments the modern game. For this update, Wilson also introduces Direct Connect Technology which fuses the butt cap directly to the carbon fiber portion of the handle for added stability. Additional updates include Wilson’s new “Chameleon Paint” which reflects subtle color changes under different angles and light conditions. Experienced players looking for speed, spin, precision and feel should love this one.

Fitness

Fitness Success Story | Chuck Wheeler

As a 78- year-old, I’ve begun hearing more and more about contemporaries who have taken falls – some of them disastrous. I’ve never had good balance, thanks to a bum knee and now an artificial knee, but when a friend died from a fall, I knew I needed to do something to improve my stability and balance. ln the last ten years, I have taken numerous group fitness classes in-person and on Zoom with Sabine, and I’ve always enjoyed her enthusiasm, humor and creativity. I realized that Sabine was the right person to help me, and I immediately called and got on her schedule for personal training two times a week by Zoom.

Princess Anne Living | March/April 2022 28

I do something every day – either “Sabine homework,” walking or swimming, and lately I’ve enjoyed doing my “Sabine homework” in the pool. I know I have gotten stronger, and my balance has definitely improved. It really paid off during a recent hiking trip with my kids.

For anyone considering personal training sessions, I would say 'Just Do It.' You’ll be surprised how quickly targeted exercises can help you reach your fitness goals. And for me, I’m looking forward to staying upright for a long time to come.

From the start, Sabine has challenged me with exercises that focus on my needs – core strength, balance and flexibility. Every session is well planned, carefully tailored to me and presented in an engaging way. Sessions never seem repetitious because each one is different, and though I don’t have a dedicated gym, we’re able to work with the basic equipment I have. At the end of each session, Sabine makes a summary video so that I can practice the exercises correctly on my own, and since I try to do my “homework,” it has been possible for us to build significantly on the exercises.
