As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on the incredible support that our community has shown to our small business, both personally and professionally. I’m deeply grateful for your continued referrals and the kindness you’ve shown us over the years. We’re especially honored to keep a tradition alive that my mom started 10 years ago: baking 100 pumpkin pies to share with clients, friends, and neighbors. I miss her dearly, and it brings me joy that our team has embraced this as a way to remember her spirit and generosity.
By the time you’re reading this, Election Day will have come and gone, I hope you had the chance to exercise your right to vote! Freedom and democracy are values my husband and I hold close, as do many in our community, especially those of us who have served our country. No matter where we each stand politically, voting unites us as part of a larger society.
Turning to the real estate market, we’ve seen a cooling in both inventory and demand leading up to the election. But history suggests that, in 7 of the last 8 election cycles, the market has rebounded within a year, with renewed demand and rising prices. This trend makes us optimistic about our local market as we move into 2025.
If you’re considering selling in the coming year, it’s a great time to start planning. If you’re curious about your home’s equity, simply scan this red QR code to the right! And for buyers, there’s no need to wait!
This year, we introduced our Secret Seller Marketplace™ - a private network where sellers can connect with serious buyers discreetly, without public listings or open houses. Many in the community have often said, “If you could get us X for our house we would consider selling.” So we thought, why not organize this in a bigger way. If you’re considering selling and have a target price in mind, this option might be ideal for you. For more details, just scan this blue QR code!
Finally, we’d love to see you at our annual Photos with Santa on December 14th. It’s one of our favorite events, and we enjoy seeing how the kids grow each year as they come to visit the Big Guy!
From all of us at Hometown Realty, we wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season filled with warmth and joy.

KIMBLES HUME
MAKING US LAUGH
Meet Kimbles Hume, a talented mom living in San Marcos, who’s taking the comedy world by storm! Known for her sharp wit and infectious humor, Kimbles has become a prominent figure in the comedy scene, performing and producing shows throughout the county and across the country. Balancing motherhood and a thriving career, she brings a unique perspective to the stage, delivering laughter and inspiration wherever she goes. Whether she’s making audiences roar with laughter or crafting her next production, Kimbles is a shining example of how moms can make it in the entertainment industry.
MOMSTOWN
Please give us a quick introduction. Tell us about Kimbles Hume and how would you like to be introduced to our readers? We don’t know very many moms who work as comedians. How do you tell people what you do? And, what is the reaction when you tell people about your job?
KIMBLES
Hi! My name is Kimbles Hume, and I’m a local comedian and producer! I know Kimbles is a weird name; it's officially Kimberley. I tried going by Kim for a while but it was ruined for me by the awful Kim Kardashian, and the slightly less awful Kim Jong Un. Kimbles was a nickname given to me by my brother when
I was young and it just kind of stuck. The problem is with my accent (I'm British) Americans often think I’m saying ‘Kibbles’, like the dog food! Somewhat delightfully, that actually inspired the name of my production company, Bits Comedy, so together I’m Kimbles ’n Bits! As a comedian I am booked to perform by comedy clubs and producers around the country. I sometimes perform for the military too. In San Diego I’m a regular at The Comedy Store La Jolla, Mic Drop Kearny Mesa and The Grand Escondido.
As a producer, I book and run my own comedy shows. I have regular shows at L’Auberge in Del Mar, San Diego Mission Bay Resort, Belly Up in Solana Beach, and I also do private shows at golf clubs, breweries, birthday parties etc. I am always looking for venues and occasions to produce more shows! Hit me up!
MOMSTOWN
How did you get started as a comedian?
KIMBLES
I’ve always been a performer (or put another way, had an overlyinflated ego), I sang in a cover band for 10 years back in the UK. I rallied and dutifully got a corporate job for 15 years (Head of Marketing at Variety magazine in LA — not too shabby!) but after I had my twins I took some time to reevaluate and follow my passions. I love writing and
started on a kids' poetry book and spent nearly two years on it. Every poem ended with a comedic twist — the problem was that 9-times-out-of 10 it was always dirty. I finally realized I just needed a different audience, and found my way back to the stage.
MOMSTOWN
What does it mean to you to be a mom of twin boys working in the comedy industry? And, what does your normal day look like?
KIMBLES
I'm not going to lie...it's a hard life. I play pickleball for six hours a day, then four nights a week I leave my husband to put the kids to bed while I go to the comedy club, have beers, sling jokes and hang with funny people.
Joking, not really, but I also try to write daily for 30 minutes, and take about 1-2 hours a day for business-related stuff; invoicing, booking, crying over rejection emails, advertising shows, designing flyers, buying new shoes (‘work’ outfits) and very occasionally the worst job of all, posting on social media.
MOMSTOWN
Coming from Britain, what do you find the funniest about living and raising a family in North County San Diego? When you travel around the country, what funny things do you notice?
KIMBLES
I don’t know if it's a British/American culture thing or just a me thing, but the biggest difference I see is that American mums are very selfless — they have a ‘kids first’ mentality. Not me, I’m very selfish, my husband and I have an ‘us first’ mentality and our kids are just along for the ride!
I'm worried I’m going to have all the mums come at me now! Don't worry, I love my kids to pieces! This might surprise you Americans but I actually love my kids more than my dog!
MOMSTOWN
We recently had the opportunity to see your “Comedy Bits” production at L’Auberge in Del Mar. We understand the show will be returning in 2025. It must have been a successful summer?
KIMBLES
Yes! Oh my gosh the show at L’Auberge in Del Mar is absolutely magical. It's my favorite thing I do in comedy! To see 300 people snuggling together in the mini amphitheater with their wine and snacks in their Tommy Bahama chairs gives me all the feels! This was our 4th year and we’ll be back next year! First Friday of the month, May — October, 8pm. Get there early with your chair or blanket. Oh, and thanks to our sponsors the Del Mar Village Association ;)
MOMSTOWN
What is the next project you’re working on and where can we find your show schedule?
KIMBLES
Follow me on instagram! (@kimbleshume @bitscomedy), DM me on Facebook! (same) or visit my website kimbleshume. com and sign up for email or text alerts. I'm in San Diego A LOT and would love to see you! Make sure you come and say hi afterwards.
MOMSTOWN
Finally, how can readers find you and reach out to you?
They can reach me at the above contact information or email me @ kimbleshume@gmail.com.
Two more things I'd like to note:
1. I am always looking to produce more shows! If you know a venue that might like a regular comedy show, or you are looking to book something ad hoc please don’t hesitate to reach out. I pride myself on booking the right comedians for your event/space, whether that's PG13, R rated, etc.
2. I am looking for a new intern!
My last intern was incredible, but he went and got into comedy school at USC and left me! If your kid is interested in comedy, or event planning/marketing, have them hit me up!

rebellious joy
In a world that demands productivity, perfection, and constant striving, choosing juicy joy is nothing short of rebellion. It’s a bold refusal to let life’s pressures steal your happiness. Here’s the radical truth: You don’t have to earn joy it’s not a reward for checking off your to-do list or making everything perfect. It’s something you can claim right now, in every small, messy, chaotic moment of life.
In fact, the more we defy the idea that joy comes later, the more we realize that joy is an act of empowerment. It’s the decision to live fully, with all the goodness that’s right in front of us. So how can you start reclaiming your juicy joy as an act of rebellion? By making bold and pleasurable choices in your everyday life, especially in ways that challenge norms or expectations.
Even the small acts of rebellion can reshape how you experience the world.
JOY AS REBELLION: CLAIMING WHAT’S YOURS
Let’s start with a truth: You’re entitled to your juicy joy. But more than that, you have to actively reclaim it. The world isn’t always going to hand it to you. Sometimes, you have to take it. This act of reclaiming joy is rebellious because it goes against everything we’re told—that joy comes later, that we need to “deserve” it.
But here’s the secret: You don’t need anyone’s permission to feel joy. You can decide to feel it now.
Even in the middle of a busy workday, even when the dishes are piling up, even when life feels overwhelming. Juicy joy is available in every moment.
TURNING EVERYDAY TASKS INTO PLAYFUL ACTS OF JUICY JOY
One of the most surprising places to find joy is in the mundane. What if you could turn the most ordinary parts of your day into playful, joyful moments? Do all things with joy, or at the very least, find juicy joy in all things.
Let’s take a mundane task — say, organizing your emails. You could slog through it with dread, or you could turn it into a mini-adventure. Crank up your favorite playlist and sing along while you clear up your digital space, noting your favorite subject line titles and making up your own song! Or turn organizing the kids sock drawer into a treasure hunt.
Juicy joy is everywhere — if you’re willing to invite it in. Or think about folding laundry. Instead of rushing through it, feel the textures of the fabrics. Notice how your hands move. What if you allowed this small, repetitive task to become a kind of meditation? Juice each moment, each experience for all the goodness it has to offer. Joy doesn’t have to be grand or loud—it can be found in the quiet rhythm of ordinary life.
ENGAGE YOUR SENSES: JOY AS A SENSORY EXPERIENCE
Juicy joy is more than just a feeling—it’s a full-body experience. One of the easiest ways to reclaim joy is to get out of your head and into your
senses. We often intellectualize joy, thinking it has to come from some big, important moment. But joy can also come from the taste of your morning coffee, the smell of freshly baked cookies, or the sound of laughter with a friend.
Make it a practice to fully engage your senses in the simplest moments. When you sit down to eat, really savor each bite. When you’re outside, feel the breeze on your skin. Juicy joy lives in these sensory moments — we just need to slow down long enough to notice them.
LAUGH IN THE FACE OF STRESS: FINDING JOY IN THE UNEXPECTED
What if you could find juicy joy in the moments that are supposed to be stressful? Imagine you’re stuck in traffic on the way to a holiday gathering. You could grumble, or you could turn it into your own personal karaoke concert. Blast your favorite song, sing at the top of your lungs, and let the stress melt away.
Or maybe you’re juggling a million things at once—grocery shopping, holiday prepping, dealing with family. Instead of letting the pressure mount, find something ridiculous in the situation to laugh at. Laughter is one of the quickest ways to diffuse stress and tap into juicy joy.
JOY AS A RADICAL ACT OF SELF-PERMISSION
One of the most innovative ways to reclaim joy is through the concept of radical self-permission. What if you gave yourself permission to feel juicy joy even when things aren’t perfect? Even when the laundry isn’t folded, the deadlines aren’t met, and the kitchen isn’t clean?
Radical self-permission means allowing yourself to feel good right now, without waiting for everything to be in order. It means being okay with things being messy, with you being messy. You don’t have to have it all figured out to feel joy.
And what’s more—this kind of permission isn’t just about joy. It’s about allowing yourself to rest, to let go of perfection, to not do all the things. Sometimes, juicy joy is in choosing ease over effort, in doing less instead of more.
SHARING JOY: A RIPPLE EFFECT OF JUICY HAPPINESS
Joy isn’t just a solo experience. It’s something that can spread. Juicy joy is contagious, and when you’re lit up with it, you pass that energy onto the people around you. Think about how good it feels when someone makes you laugh or shares a small moment of happiness with you. Now imagine you’re the one doing that for others.
Start a joy ripple. Share something that made you smile today—a quick text, a silly selfie, or just a joyful thought. It doesn’t take much, but it can create a ripple of happiness that touches everyone you connect with.
JOY & EMOTIONAL BARRIERS: LETTING JUICY JOY COEXIST WITH EVERYTHING ELSE
Sometimes, joy feels far away because we’re carrying heavy emotional weight. It’s easy to think that we have to wait for joy until we feel better, until the sadness or stress or anger goes away. But what if juicy joy could coexist with all of those feelings?
You don’t have to be free of challenges to feel joy. In fact, joy is often what softens those difficult emotions. Let joy sit beside your stress or sadness. Give yourself permission to feel both. Juicy joy doesn’t have to push everything else away. It can be a companion to your struggles, a small light in the darkness.
Take a minute right now. What’s one small thing you can do today to reclaim juicy joy in the everyday? Maybe it’s finding a playful way to get through a task, savoring a sensory moment, or laughing at the unexpected. Whatever it is, share it. Spread that juicy joy to someone else and watch it ripple outward.
In a world that tells you to keep going, to always strive for more, choosing juicy joy is a radical act. You’re entitled to your juicy joy, but more than that—you have to claim it. Reclaim it. Every day. In every little way.

Holidays are drawing close, and many of us may have started doing some house cleaning. Here, I’d like to invite you to do some year-end financial housekeeping as well. Below are some ideas as to what might be helpful to consider at this time of the year, with key focuses centered on tax-planning (you may have realized what a taxnerd I am by now
Ph.D., CFP®
1. Update your household financial statements
Just like running a good business, two financial statements are of utmost importance for each household - income statement and balance sheet. Year-end is a great time to update them both.
A. Income Statement takes in all your income, and expenses for the period you are working on, say, since January 1, 2024. Add all your income, and if that’s higher than all your expenses, congratulate yourself! Save that surplus and invest properly, your future self will thank you for that!
B. Balance Sheet is a snapshot of where you are financially. Check all of your account statements for assets and liabilities, and see where you are. Take your debts out of your assets to get your net worth (like we talked about last time). I hope you see a higher net worth than it was last time you calculated it. And while you are at it, set a new goal for next year, so it can continue to pursue growth.
2. Retirement plan contributions
If you are a business owner, or self-employed, this could be a great time to consider if you need a retirement plan (if you don’t yet have one), and/or how much contribution might be suitable to make before January 1, 2025. Estimate your total 2024 income and expenses/depreciation, and potential profits for the year. This will help you figure out the proper amount of contributions to make, and get it done before the year is over. CPAs could have great suggestions as well, so check with them.
3. Tax-loss harvesting
If you invest in the stock market outside of your retirement (also called tax-qualified, or qualified accounts) accounts, it is a good idea to take a look at your realized gains (and losses) for the year, also consider any losses carried over from previous years. Taxloss harvesting can potentially help you reduce your tax bills if done properly, though be mindful of the IRS wash-sale rules.
More questions? Contact me at li.tian@lpl.com
4. ROTH conversion
ROTH IRA has the benefit of tax-deferred growth, as well as tax-free distribution when done correctly. So it is a power tool in managing your tax-exposure in later years. A ROTH conversion is a process used to convert money from a pre-tax retirement account (such as in regular 401K, pre-tax Traditional IRA, etc.) into a ROTH IRA account. You will need to pay income tax on the converted amount, but there are no penalties even if you are younger than 59-½. Again, I strongly suggest that you consult your CPA and financial advisor before doing this.
5. Year-end gifting
Giving Tuesday is right after Thanksgiving (December 3rd this year), and this is a great opportunity to support organizations and charities of your choice. And for those with high net worth and want to help their family members, they can give up to $18,000 (per giver, and per recipient for 2024) without incurring gift taxes. Consider the lifetime gift/estate tax exemption (currently at $13.61 million) is projected to drop to around $7 million in 2026 due to the sunset of TCJA 2017, this could be a good topic of consideration for those families who may be impacted by this change.
As always, help from competent advisors (such as CPAs, estate attorneys, and CFP®s) can provide clarity and directions to help families in building confidence in their financial future. And if you are overwhelmed and still need help, please feel free to reach out. We offer complementary initial consultation to every family. My email is: li.tian@lpl.com

Have a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season. See you all in 2025!
DEBORAH SORLIE
As a personal stylist, if there was one statement from my clients that I hear time and again is, “I just want to look cute, not frumpy.” We all have our own concept and level of what “cute” is, but we definitely have a clear view of what “frumpy” looks like.
The art teacher comes out in me as I guide the woman in front of me on how to look at fashion with new eyes. Here are some ways you may take the leap of faith into changing the way you select your next outfit to wear:
The first step is how your clothes are fitting you. Are they loose, baggy and maybe one size too big? For tops, check where the sleeves end. Are they too long? A good rule of thumb when fitting a blazer is to have the hem of your sleeve stop just at the first knuckle of your thumb. Do the shoulders actually fit on your shoulder or do they go past your shoulder. This might be where the next size smaller could work. For pants, is the seat stretched out or not lying smoothly? Is the hem dragging on the floor so much you cannot see your shoes? Remember, a skilled seamstress can correct most of these challenges and is definitely your ally in achieving a flawless fit.
Check proportions — is your jacket swallowing you or would a more fitted version compliment a waist you thought better off to hide. Do you have short legs? A simple trick to elongate them while wearing pants is to make your belt the same color as your pants. You will gain a solid 2” in your leg length. My advice and philosophy is to stop hiding your flaws and start accentuating what you really love about your body. Embrace your unique features and celebrate you.
Next, once fit is established, look at investing in the 5 Sustainable Wardrobe Staples that I always encourage my clients to have: a white blouse, a good fitting pair of jeans, a pair of black pants, a trench coat and a little black dress (LBD). These staples are your investment pieces and are the classics that will take you away from any hint of frumpiness.
Now here is where the fun begins. Take a look at what is trending for the season. There will always be different versions of the stand-out trends that the everyday woman can wear. Choose one that resonates with you. Whatever it is, choose one and try it on. Envision it with one of your staples. Does it fit the way the style was meant to look? And does it look good on you? Do you like the way it makes you feel?
Take it home. Try it with a couple different staples. Walk around, look in the mirror at all angles, especially the back. Now ask yourself, where will I wear this? Replace that overly casual and somewhat baggy outfit and wear that new outfit out to the store, to get a coffee, to have lunch with a friend. Because the reality is, you have to get up and get dressed anyway, you might as well look and feel fabulous.

ERIN THOMPSON
Owner and baker of Sweet Memories Bake Shop, Erin has been passionate about baking since she was a young girl. She has put her self-taught baking knowledge to work in creating sweet memories out of her Cottage Food Licensed home in San Marcos, CA.
She is also the mother to two creative kiddos, Jack and Marnie.
Erin and her Navy Veteran husband James have lived in San Elijo Hills since 2016.
Sweet Memories Bake Shop bakes with intention. Food is more than sustenance, it’s an experience. There’s comfort in warm cookies, joy in sweet cake, and happiness when it’s shared with special people in your life.

You own and operate a cookie company from your home kitchen. Tell us about your business and how you got started?
ERIN
Before I started baking more seriously, I worked for 10 years as a catering manager for HIlton Hotels. We always had a birthday in the office and I baked cakes and cupcakes. My sweet coworkers would say I should start a baking business. I was thinking, “yeah, I wish." I had always wanted a bakery storefront, but knew it would be way too expensive.
Fast forward to 2016, I quit my job to have our son, Jack. We then purchased our home that December in San Elijo Hills. Around January of 2017, I started baking for people in the neighborhood and then it kind of snowballed after that. I was getting lots of referrals for birthday treats. I then decided to start Sweet Memories Bake Shop. Custom sugar cookies also became more popular and I taught myself how to make royal icing and watched a LOT of videos.
I knew I needed to make my business legal by applying for a Cottage Food Permit, but waited until 2020 when meringue powder was approved, which is what I use in my royal icing. I also offer more than cakes and cookies, I love to bake pies, quiches, muffins, etc. I enjoy being skilled in all areas of baking, which is what helps set me apart. I consider my business a one-stop-shop.

Cottage food laws have been improving across the United States. What has the cottage food
movement meant to you? What would you say to others who are thinking about starting a home based food business?
ERIN
The cottage food movement for me, has been a wonderful experience. It has given me time at home with my family, it has helped supplement our income by helping pay for family trips and activities for our kids. Most importantly, it has given me my dream business. My own bakery. I can make my own hours. I make the decision on what I want to sell and how to sell it.
To those who are thinking of starting a home based food business, I would say, give it a shot! But before you dive in, be sure to do your homework. You need to come up with a business plan. What will you sell? Who will you sell it to? How much will it cost to make it? What is your profit margin?
How can you stand out? How will you get customers? How will you keep track of your orders and spending? Also be ready for some long hours in the kitchen, lots of standing and doing dishes!
I am SO LUCKY to be a part of such an amazing community that loves to support small businesses. I honestly wouldn’t be as successful as I am without them.
MOMSTOWN
What challenges or roadblocks have you run into in starting and running your business from home?
ERIN
I would say the biggest challenge I have faced is just trying to keep a work life balance with my family. I sometimes will take on 5 to 6 orders in a week. To get them done, I would stay up late after the kids went to bed, so I wouldn’t miss time with them or my husband. But now that both kids are in the same school, I do have more time to bake and decorate during the day.
I also would say yes to every inquiry in the beginning because I would have a hard
time saying no, which I am still working on, lol, but I looked at it as one more customer I could keep or who could refer me. Now that I am more established, I will refer customers to other bakers in the area if needed.

Do you have a favorite cookie recipe to share with our readers for the holidays?
ERIN
Honestly, I enjoy classic chocolate chip cookies, but with a twist — browned butter. It’s easy to make! Browned butter gives cookies a nutty/toffee flavor that pairs so well with the chocolate and a nice glass of milk. Definitely something Santa will enjoy! (Erin shares this recipe on Pg 20!)
MOMSTOWN
How can we and our readers order cookies or other delicious baked goods?
ERIN
The best way to get a hold of me for orders is by email, Facebook or phone.
In a medium bowl, sift together the flours, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.
MAKE BROWNED BUTTER
recipe courtesy of Erin Thompson of Sweet Memories Baker Shop (MAKES 18-24 cookies)
In a medium or large saucepan, add the butter and melt over medium heat. A larger pan will speed up the process!
Bring the butter to a boil, stirring frequently. When the water begins to boil out of the butter, the milk solids in the butter will separate, sink to the bottom, and begin to toast and brown. As this begins to happen, be sure to stir constantly so the butter browns evenly. It will become foamy, and possibly splatter a bit, and be difficult to see, so keep a close eye on it.
Remove from heat and continue to stir if it starts to foam over.
When the butter has turned a nutty brown, remove from the heat and pour into a large liquid measuring cup to stop the cooking. Allow it to cool down for a minute or two, give it a stir, and carefully add 2-3 tablespoons of water to the butter to bring it back up to 1 cup (240 ml) of liquid.
Set aside to cool to room temperature. Or you can place it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. You want to make sure the butter is still liquid when you’re adding it to the dough later on, so remove after 15 minutes.
In a large bowl, add the sugars, vanilla, and cooled brown butter. Cream together with an electric hand mixer until light and fluffy, 1-2 minutes.
Add the eggs one at a time and beat until incorporated.
Add the dry ingredients, about ⅓ of the mixture at a time, and beat between additions until just incorporated.
Using a wooden spoon, fold the chocolate chips and chunks into the dough.
Scoop the cookies onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet in 2-tablespoon-sized mounds.
For optimal flavor, cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or, even better, overnight.
PREHEAT OVEN to 350˚F (180˚C).
Evenly space the dough 3 inches (8 cm) apart from one another on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. I usually get 6 cookies per sheet.
Bake in a preheated oven for 12-14 minutes.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

FEED ’EM IN FALL TO WELCOME THEM BACK IN WINTER
Article courtesy of Joan Casanova
Humans aren’t the only ones who look forward to autumn harvest. Fall brings a bounty of natural foods for our feathered friends, too. But while they’re feasting on fall’s cornucopia of delicacies, birds are also planning ahead, taking note of yards with bird feeders that can help them weather winter’s cold.
Many of birds’ favorite foods are actually more abundant in fall. Summer weeds ripen with seeds by October. Many berries only begin to emerge in late summer or early winter, and insects are plentiful. You may think there’s no need to feed birds during the fall, but if you want them to find your home in winter, start feeding in autumn.
The birds who visit feeders in fall are scouting, becoming familiar with feeding stations and making decisions on which backyards they’ll visit this winter. The feed you put out in fall lets birds know they’ll be welcomed and fed in your backyard when seriously cold weather arrives – and they no longer have the luxury of exploring for food.
Winter weather is hard on birds. Their calorie requirements increase, food becomes hard to find, snow covers up seeds and ice storms seal away tree buds and wild fruits. Tiny birds must eat one-third to three-quarters of their weight each day. When temperatures dip below zero, easy meals at a feeder can mean the difference between life and death.
An important rule of fall and winter feeding is to be prepared. By stocking up now on premium bird seeds and feed, bird lovers can help secure a wholesome food source without having to brave stormy weather.
It’s important to stock your feeders with high-quality foods that provide birds with the most fat, nutrients and energy. Look for a feed like Cole’s that packs nutrition, preserves freshness and gives you the most feed for your dollar. For example, Cole’s Wild Bird Products’ Oil Sunflower is more than 99% pure and cleaned four times to ensure there are more seeds and fewer sticks in each bag. Feed is also nitrogen-purge packaged, just like potato chips, to ensure freshness and insect-free feed.
In addition to seed, serve up some suet either in the form of Suet cakes for non-seed eating birds or suet mixed with seed. Consider Cole’s Nutberry Suet, which is a seed blend mix of premium fruits, preferred nuts, nutritious insect suet kibbles and whole-kernel sunflower meats that appeals to fruit and insect-loving songbirds. Or try Suet Kibbles, bursting with berry flavor and loaded with energy for increased stamina. These feed choices provide fat and a high-protein energy source to assist wild birds in weathering winter and may actually boost their chance of survival.
Just as birds need food year-round, they also look for water. This can be tricky in regions where water spends the winter as ice, but bird lovers can still help in a few ways. Experts suggest leaving icicles on the eaves to provide a regular source of water for birds that drink drops as the icicles melt. Birds are drawn to running water sounds, so spritzers or small fountains are beneficial. In the winter, try using quality bird bath heaters to keep water from freezing, plus they’re more convenient than setting out water every day.
Don’t worry about the birds if you must leave home for a while in winter. Birds are familiar with food sources disappearing. It might take them a while to rediscover your feeders when you return, but they’ll be back, grateful for your assistance.

TIPS TO BOOST YOUR HOME'S CURB APPEAL
As 2025 approaches, homeowners are looking for ways to boost curb appeal and increase property value. The exterior is often a buyer’s first impression, making it crucial to stay on trend with strategic updates that add both beauty and functionality. From sustainable landscaping and fresh paint to smart technology and modern outdoor spaces, the right enhancements can transform a home’s appeal. In this article, we share expert-backed tips to help you stay ahead of the curve. Discover how these key upgrades can not only improve your home’s aesthetics but also deliver a solid return on investment in the coming year.
To enhance curb appeal and increase property value in 2025, consider these expert-backed strategies:
1. SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING
Why it works: Sustainable and drought-tolerant landscaping is gaining popularity. Homeowners increasingly opt for native plants, permeable pathways, and water-saving irrigation systems. Expert opinion: According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), sustainable landscaping is a top trend that attracts ecoconscious buyers and can significantly boost a home’s appeal and market value.
2. EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Why it works: Upgrading outdoor lighting is one of the simplest ways to elevate curb appeal. Choose energy-efficient lighting options, like solar-powered path lights or motion-activated LED security lights. Expert opinion: Zillow research reveals that homes with well-lit exteriors sell for up to 3.1% more than expected, highlighting the importance of curb visibility and safety.
3. PAINTED FRONT DOOR
Why it works: A freshly painted front door in a bold, trending color can make a big impact. In 2025, expect to see colors like earthy greens, deep blues, and warm neutrals making statements.
Expert opinion: Data from Remodeling Magazine suggests that a new or updated front door has one of the highest returns on investment (ROI), recouping up to 70% of the cost.
4. SMART TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Why it works: Incorporating smart technology, such as video doorbells, smart locks, and automated outdoor lighting, adds convenience, security, and modern appeal to the home’s exterior.
Expert opinion: According to a survey by HomeAdvisor, smart home features are expected to be among the most sought-after upgrades in 2025, with buyers willing to pay a premium for properties that have these additions.
5. OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

Expert opinion: Per the American Institute of Architects (AIA), demand for outdoor spaces has surged, with homebuyers increasingly seeking homes that offer inviting outdoor entertainment areas.
6. MODERN HOUSE NUMBERS & MAILBOX
Why it works: Modernizing small details like house numbers and the mailbox can enhance a home's appearance instantly. Opt for bold, stylish numbers and sleek, updated mailboxes.
Expert opinion: Experts at Better Homes & Gardens highlight that these low-cost changes can make a significant difference, adding a polished and contemporary look that appeals to buyers.
7. DRIVEWAY RESURFACING
Why it works: Cracks or stains in the driveway can detract from curb appeal. Resurfacing or installing a new driveway with updated materials like concrete pavers or stamped concrete can be a smart investment.
Expert opinion: The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recommends driveway improvements as a valuable upgrade that can enhance a home's exterior aesthetics and functionality.
By incorporating these updates, homeowners can increase their property's curb appeal and potentially boost its market value, aligning with the latest trends for 2025.
