OPINION BY RAY SHAY A few nights ago, my eyes blinked wide open long before the sunrise ever began to brighten our night sky. I found myself staring blankly into the darkness above my bed after conducting my little celebration in my brain that I was really alive for another day. After glancing at my iPhone I wondered why I was wide awake at 3:19 AM. Like most parents, I started with a checklist of my children. Troy, Raymond, and Ryan’s smiling faces arrived quickly on the ceiling, and for some reason, I focused on my youngest son Ryan. I recalled he had eaten a good dinner, smiled frequently, and then went to his room where he was now safely sleeping. I reminded myself all three of my sons were good and asked myself again why I was not sleeping?

Then it hit me like a pallet of red bricks crashing down through my roof and pinning me to my bed. Elvis #3 is really leaving.

My youngest son Ryan, has an alias and it is Elvis #3. Troy is Elvis #1 and Raymond is Elvis #2. They will likely grill me on why I put them all on the cover of the Community Hub® newspaper.

My explanation will be simple. “The older I get the more deeply I love each of you and the less I care what other people think”. When my DNA cocktail was prepared so many years ago the bartender really messed up. I was only given a single teaspoon of my dad’s “not caring what other people think” DNA while an overflowing cup of my mom’s “sensitive” genes were slipped in.

I finally said, “Ok Ry, I’ll meet you there. Good luck!” Ryan looked at me and then continued peering out of the glass doors.

Sometimes I would purposely sit with my back to Ryan in a restaurant or coffee shop and just raise my right hand and yell back to the chagrin of all the local moms sitting around me, “See ya at home Ry. Cross at the street light!”

Like most phases of our children’s lives it was just another treasured memory that fades into the ocean of love that is part of being a parent. I always encourage each of my sons to dream big, pursue their goals, and seek discomfort. I find the biggest growth in my life always occurred when I was stretched due to adversity.

I always wished I was more like my father who was a Navy fighter pilot in World War II. He was even shot down over the Pacific Ocean and survived shark-infested waters. Ryan was only about three or four years old when he developed an affinity for glass doors. I recall seeing him placing both of his little hands on them at Los Primos Mexican Restaurant in 4S Ranch. Ryan kept peering out the doors at the big world and his brown hair would flip as he turned his head side to side as he watched people walk by or scurried to get out of their way. Ryan suddenly announced, ”Dad, I’m walking home!”

The most recent riot I attended was in Kenosha, Wisconsin where Kyle Rittenhouse asked me and several other people if we needed medical aid.

Of all the myriad of challenges I have ever faced both personally and professionally, I found the most bone-crushing challenge that I ever faced was divorce. Looking back it’s kind of funny because as a cop you deal with people divorcing frequently. On the outside, I was patient and professional dealing with these instances but inside I would play a hidden soundtrack in the back of my mind that said, “Dude just get over it and move on with your life”.

To bring some humor into the tough conversation I reminded them that we all know there really is only one king and that is Elvis Aaron Presley. I told Troy being the oldest he would also be known as Elvis #1, Raymond Elvis #2 and Ryan would be Elvis #3. I looked at Ryan and recognized that tinge of competitive look on his face and I tried to comfort him by saying, “yeah Ry it sucks being last, but those are the cards you got so play them the best you can”.

I think I was raised too Catholic and getting divorced cut me to the core because I felt I had failed in my two biggest goals of my life which were to be a good husband and a good father.

Despite Ryan’s assertions that he was fine, I insisted that he go with me to see a therapist. I still remember him walking out of her office. As he approached me in the packed waiting room he gave me a, “I told you so look” before rolling his eyes and immersing himself in his Iphone as he sat down among the crowd of people waiting for help.

The therapist greeted me with a smile and got right to the point. “I know you are worried about Ryan but he is doing just fine. He is a bright kid. He has it figured out.” Maybe it was the way I exhaled or some other special Jedi training the doctor had received but she did not miss a beat when she added, “Mr. Shay you don’t need to worry about your son anymore. But on the other hand, I know I can certainly help you”. She then paused, smiled, and just stared at me.

At that moment I recall thinking, “Is it that obvious?” Did she really know I had fired my first two therapists because they were taking too long to heal me or that the third therapist fired me because she insisted I needed to join an outpatient group of depressed people or start taking medication?

The alternative Elvis designators went into effect over five years ago and I still frequently use them today to remind my sons how important they are to me. To their credit Troy, Raymond and Ryan have turned into terrific young men and each of them are pursuing their dreams and challenges which results in them being uncomfortable in ways they never imagined.

As for my divorce, it turns out the biggest challenge in my life was the very best thing that ever happened to me. SAN DIEGANS MAKING AN IMPACT IN UKRAINE San Diegans Stand up for Ukraine in Unique Ways Local Ties to Ukraine Making a Lasting Difference

While media coverage of the war in Ukraine may feel like unending background news, the atrocities and pain continue. San Diegans countywide are taking action to provide real support and dignity to the people of Ukraine. Read on to hear their stories and how to help.

“I rapidly packed a small suitcase with three sweaters and my pajamas. I hoped to have the chance to sleep in a bed. As we sat on a sofa, I kissed my mom goodbye. A car filled with four unknown people picked me up. They, like me, crossed the border in darkness.”

Zhanna Talanova, co-owner of English Language instruction school 21englishonline.com was awakened by the sounds of bombs on February 24. Her visit with her mother, disrupted by war. Over the next four days she journeyed from Odesa to Maldova to Romania to Paris, and finally to LA where she reunited with her best friend and business partner. Along the way, she encountered families fleeing with only the clothes on their backs, saying goodbye to fathers who remained to fight. Volunteers at the border offered hot tea and food, asking “Do you need help?”, a question she has heard frequently in recent days.

“The volunteers tended to me like I was family,” Talanova reports, “My heart felt shattered, but the people around me tried to put the pieces back together.” The caring, brave actions of those who have reached out to help has rekindled a faith in the future for Zhanna. Since the war began, millions of Ukrainians have left their homes.

Simona Valanciute, CEO of San Diego Oasis, and active member of the San Diego Rotary Club, felt called to action immediately. She regularly visits her mother in her hometown in Joniskis, Lithuania where she has lifelong relationships with those who serve as leaders of her hometown’s Rotary Club. Joniskis Rotary has assisted Ukrainian Rotary Clubs with humanitarian efforts since the 2014 Russian invasion in Crimea.

San Diego Rotarians, familiar with Valanciute’s deep connections to the region, asked her how they could help.

Valanciute rallied to organize an educational workshop and fundraiser hosted at San Diego Oasis. The evening included dance performances by House of Ukraine children, traditional Ukrainian foods, an auction, and Simona’s presentation which created a deeper understanding of the history and politics in the region for those in attendance.

San Diego Rotary and Oasis members, neighbors, and friends gathered to raise over $43,000 that night. Valanciute continues to raise funds and provide specific updates from Joniskis Rotary about how local donations are helping.

Valanciute’s deep ties with the Rotary Club of Joniskis provides a unique, intimate, timely window into the needs of those on the ground. She personally compiles regular updates for donors on how local donations are being used. In addition to meeting expected needs such as hygiene items and food for women and children, and medical supplies and support for troops, money raised from San Diegans have also funded the purchase of used vehicles: vans and trucks are filled with supplies and tools for a troop near Kyiv and other cities overwhelmed by refugees. The Joniskis Rotary was even able to sponsor an uplifting show for Ukrainian refugees featuring the travelling Kharkiv Ballet Company.

In a recent update Valanciute stated,” I wish I could tell you the war is over and everyone is focused on rebuilding.

If you are watching and reading news, you know that there is no clearly visible relief in sight.”

While the San Diego-Tijuana international border was open for emergency entry of Ukrainian refugees, about 15,000 crossed into San Diego. Refugees were given an emergency Humanitarian Parole Visa, good for one year.

Many refugees had connections to friends and family, but

since the humanitarian visas come with no support for housing, healthcare, or food assistance, the need is great for people who don’t have a path here, according to Valanciute. Though the visas supply immediate safety, they don’t include Work Permits, leaving thousands without a way to support themselves.

About the Artist – Stefan Talian was born in 1979 in Michalovce, Slovakia (previously Czechoslovakia). He immigrated to the United States in 2003. On what was supposed to be a short visit to San Diego in 2010, he knew he had arrived at the place he would call home. It was here that he would become a naturalized citizen and discover Sheltered his passion for painting.

Growing up, Talian always enjoyed sketching and creating art but did not recognize it as a viable way to make a living, instead choosing more pragmatic ways to survive. Struggling with his identity, learning to speak a new language, navigating a foreign culture, and trying to survive alone in a new country was emotionally draining. Unable to express himself proficiently in English, a friend suggested that he try painting in an effort to release his pent-up emotions. It was then that he discovered the universal language of art and hasn’t stopped painting since.

Within a year he joined The Studio Door, a collective of local studio artists under the mentorship of Patric Stillman. Being exposed to other artists was an invaluable experience for him, having been mostly self-taught.

It was at The Studio Door that he met Hyacinthe Kuller Baron, an American Master Painter, who taught him how to free his hands from the brush and feel the canvas. Direct contact with the canvas brought a new level of depth and motion to his work. Hyacinthe’s freedom proved inspirational. Seeing how she approached her art and the successes she enjoyed gave Talian the motivation he needed to take the next step on his own artistic journey.

Moving beyond his earlier works of bodies in motion, he began exploring the surging emotions that lay hidden within those bodies.

“When asked to do the cover for Local Umbrella I jumped at the opportunity to help raise awareness about what’s happening in the Ukraine. It’s heartbreaking watching the events unfold and having it being so close to my hometown near the Ukrainian border. Expressing my feelings about it through the face of a little girl was very emotional, but also comforting. Her colorful head dress represents the strong and proud culture of a small country. The tear falling down her cheek is the pain the nation is going through. Her smile is the hope and belief in a better future. Girl nurturing the flag is symbolic of the extraordinary determination and resistance of Ukrainian people to protect their independence and freedom. MEET SAN DIEGO’S TOP MAN FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY VISUALS: HALLECK CUI

Since the time that he picked up his first art tool as a young boy, Halleck Cui has created quite the stir. He began as a fine artist, using paint and other mediums in rather traditional fashion to bring still lifes, portraits, seascapes and other imagery to galleries and private collectors. Then, he applied his exceptional talents to creating art for video games. This end-use of his skillset required him to become adept in computers as he worked on projects of high precision. He inally decided to use his abilities for the greater good, creating powerful visuals for the biotechnology industry, which he’s fervently still doing today.

It is well known that San Diego has become the hub of life science activities, with both global and regional corporations doing research, and developing new medical treatments. Optimally presenting some of their ideas, advancements, protocols and findings to the public, other medical professionals, or investors can be a challenge.

This is very much less the case for many, though, since Cui has been on the scene.

His company, Black Horse Animation & Design, LLC, is devoted to boosting engagement levels for biomedical firms through high-end visuals that are both accurate and stunning. The company is based right here in San Diego at the center of the industry; other clients from around the country have also benefited from the firm’s services, which are virtually right next door.

The name of the company itself, Black Horse, stems from Cui being born in the year of the horse, according to the Chinese Zodiac. As a child, he was often asked by a man at his parents’ workplace if he was a white or a black horse. He didn’t understand it back then, but later learned that the black one is the kind that unexpectedly comes out on top. Cui identifies himself as such, since many people did not believe he would make it financially practicing visual arts. The person who asked him that happens to be Gene Lay, the founder and CEO of BioLegend, now the #1 largest biotech company in San Diego. Cui met with him this year for the first time in two decades, and confirmed that the black horse legend is what Lay was referring to back then.

to spread rampantly in our society. Facts needed to be presented in an accurate and exciting way. This was in contrast to his early childhood experiences with the subject. Cui says, “When I was a kid, I didn’t like science because there was no entertainment factor, just boring graphs that put people to sleep. I felt cheated for having been presented something so important in such a bland way. After working in games and practicing animation, I learned the objective, systematic ways to make anything more visually engaging. I want to use that skill to inspire people to be interested in things that are critical to our lives.”

With an MBA from UCSD Rady School of Management under his belt, Cui learned how to successfully run a multifaceted operation – by himself. His first biomedical client needed visualizations for scientific journals and patient education. He wowed them, and after that, his reputation preceded him. The company has since grown successfully and steadily.

He and his team of artists are masters at grabbing viewers’ attention, an accomplishment that was personally honed by Cui after a decade of making video games that sell. He says, “I realized the disciplines used in making games can be applied to other undertakings that affect real life.

I wanted to bring the aggressive, cutting-edge style that modern games have to medicine.”

There is more to his story than that, though, specifically how he ended up choosing biotechnology as the outlet for his exceptional talents.

DUSTY PASSPORT SEES DAYLIGHT IN BAJA How Mexico’s Coastal and Wine Regions Offer Culture and Cuisine

It had been 18 months since my passport had seen daylight. Travel restrictions, lockdowns, and frankly, some level of complacency were to blame for my silenced exploration. My husband Benjamin, and I had traded in airline tickets and carry-ons for tents and fishing poles to take our pack of pooches into the wild.

Four trips to the Sequoias had us on repeat, where we settled our tribe at the base of the river. It was there that we read books aloud, smoked fresh trout, counted falling stars, and bathed under cascading waterfalls. Days would pass without seeing a soul, to the point that our return to a still isolated-and-masked society was slightly depressing.

Being alone — and together — felt right.

I suppose we had the pandemic to thank for that. Pre-Covid era, we were constantly on the go, traveling internationally at least once a month for both work and play. Our assignments took us to destinations as near as Costa Rica and as far as Turkey. To date, I had shaken hands with over 85 countries, but now I was pushing my suitcase into dusty rafters instead of an overhead compartment.

Friends and family knew us as “explorers,” and many asked how we were “holding up” in the midst of global change. Ironically, we were doing just fine.

Together, we spent more time cooking, camping, and enjoying life on our farm. Benjamin invested in passion projects like leather work and motorbiking, while I returned to my first love of surfing. Peppered throughout our travel hiatus were house renovations, property upgrades, and research on how to better live off the land. This new normal had us soaking in the present rather than clinging to the fantasy of tomorrow.

Then, on month 18, it hit. That little itch that makes you want to cross a border. Flying . . . eh, not so much. The thought of lines, masks, protocols, paperwork, and possibly quarantine had sent us checking weather conditions and surf reports closer to home.

We didn’t need to go far, but we did crave culture — a place where we could hear another language, taste exotic foods, and maybe even stand 6-feet-together with strangers.

And there it was . . . Mexico.

The neighboring country was nothing new to us, and in fact, we’d probably visited Mexico over 30 times. But this trip would be different. It would be our great resurgence, an awakening that had the potential to reignite our desire to explore.

We decided on a a two-part vacation that would take us to the Baja Peninsula for a total of eight days. In between would be a weekend back home in San Diego. Part one would focus on surfing and relaxation near Puerto Nuevo, and part two on culture and cuisine LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com

in Valle de Guadalupe’s wine country. Both could be easily reached by car, taking us doorto-door in less than two hours.

To avoid crowds, higher prices, and border waits, we would travel mid-week and capitalize on one of the greatest benefits of being self-employed . . . freedom. Literally days before our trip, we booked a beachfront property in the gated community of Primo Tapia.

For just $110 a night, our little casita had two bedrooms, a courtyard, and a rooftop deck.

It was here where we drank margaritas and watched the ocean swallow the sun.

It really was a magical property. Newly renovated, it had a vibrant Santa Fe style decor with everything from artwork and cookbooks giving a proper nod to Mexican culture. Within minutes of our arrival, we were greeted by “Bill,” a friendly American expat who asked us if we had come from “the dark side.”

Even before we had toured our own place, he had invited us into his, expounding on the benefits of living in Mexico where beachfront property was shockingly affordable, and above all, where life was good.

We soon discovered both his claims were remarkably true. We started each morning with a surf session just out front, where waves pitched well overhead. A swell came in days before, and so, we paddled our little hearts out, committing to go big or go home.

and biting whitewash. All four of our rescue dogs had originally come from Tijuana, but this was another side of Mexico they had never experienced. It was one of triumph over adversity, where full bellies were topped with morsels of carne asada.

Between lazy days of naps and double surf sessions, the time passed as it should — without a care in the world. The Internet was down, meaning we couldn’t stream Netflix or even text for that matter. Instead, we watched the one DVD that was in the casita, Disney’s Ice Age. Generally, I’m not a fan of children’s films, or even Disney for that matter, but there we were “mom and dad” next to our fur-babies sprawled out with their spindly legs, pattering tails, and doggie snores.

Our routine was surf, eat, sleep, repeat. Other than a rogue surf session at famed K-38 — followed by a sushi lunch — we didn’t venture far from our compound. All our meals were cooked in-house, expect for that single stop at Collectivo Surf Tasting Room. We started with ceviche, and moved onto fish tacos, poke bowls, and ocean-to-table sushi. The best part was that our dogs were right there, living their best lives.

Over dinner that night I asked Benjamin the question that our neighbor “Bill” probably had once asked his wife: “What do you think it would take to move here?” Obviously, we had no idea. So, we went straight to Bill.

beach lodging, I couldn’t believe it. To pour sugar on the sweet deal, he told us that property tax was nonexistent.

The next day during the drive across the border, I couldn’t take my mind off Mexico.

“What if we visited once a month? . . .What if we bought a place and then rented it out in between? . . . What if we sold our home and just moved here?”

The “what if ’s” hit Benjamin left and right.

Back home, we opened our computers and started house hunting “just for the fun of it.”

One click after another intrigued us with the idea of starting over. What we had paid for our property in San Diego, would get us a 10-bedroom coastal palace, with swimming pools and a cinema to boot.

I was consumed with moving across the border . . .that is, until I plucked figs from our tree, collected eggs from our chickens, and opened the door to our 120-year-old antique barn that blesses thousands of people each month with community events.

We had it good, a life —within a land — that people on the other side of the fence would risk their lives for. And while I never stopped thinking about that beachfront property, I settled into the idea of what it might look like if we visited our “neighbor” a little more often.

So, back into the car we went, this time to Valle de Guadalupe, 30 minutes northeast of Ensenada. From San Diego, we took the main artery of the Baja Peninsula: Highway 1.

This legendary coastal road winds down from Tijuana to Los Cabos through deserts and bluffs. A faster, less scenic alternative is Highway 1D connecting Tijuana to Ensenada, and then cutting inland on Carretera 3 to Valle de Guadalupe.

Seven years earlier, we fell madly in love with “Valle,” wooed by her endless vineyards, olive groves, and architectural masterpieces along the Ruta del Vino. It instantly replaced the Tijuana grit with Mexico’s finest wines, alongside country inns, luxurious haciendas, container hotels, glamping tents, and romantic B&Bs. Setting down roots in the fertile land are prodigy chefs who transform old world charm into a rebellious vision gone right, with table-to-farm menus plunked right in the middle of dreamy ranches.

Balancing the mixed blessings that accompany such discoveries, many locals are fighting to keep this area from becoming the next Napa Valley. Nearly 90% of the country’s wine production comes straight from the Valle, meaning numbers are still on the rise. In 2004, there were five wineries in production, and today there are more than 120.

Hacienda Guadalupe, and El Cielo. While the Valley is producing some remarkable wines, it’s not easy to find them this side of the border. Some of the bigger wineries like L.A. Cetto have managed to work their bottles into BevMo, Whole Foods, and the Wine Bank in San Diego.

Designers, architects, and hoteliers are getting in on the Guadalupe action with eco-properties built beside lavender and bougainvillea hillsides that add a splash of color to patchwork lands.

Despite these perks, it’s the impressive blends that keep visitor-count high, and that kept us coming back for more. This time, we traveled sans-dogs, passing world-class boutique wineries to celebrate the 8-year anniversary of our favorite property, El Cielo (meaning “heaven”). Considered a giant among the region’s vineyards, this winery produces 15,000 cases of wine and 24 labels annually.

Most visitors pause for the day to sample El Cielo’s blends named after constellations.

During our first visit to El Cielo, we were charmed by the elegant Chardonnay, Capricornius, and the Italian grape blend of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. The Perseus, aged 24 months in French oak barrels, and the Orion — their most popular reds —are both worth emptying your luggage for.

And we did. Bottles were destined to clank all the way back to San Diego. We blame (and thank) the wine revelation on Latitude 32, El Cielo’s restaurant named for its location on the map. This upscale eatery specializes in grilled cuts like pork belly tacos and cast-iron octopus — both of which we devoured on day one with a few glasses of wine.

That evening, we settled into our villa, at 473 square foot suite overlooking El Cielo’s vineyards. Luxury doesn’t come cheap however, with rates starting at $400 a night for a slice of “Heaven.” It truly is the closest thing to a Riviera Maya resort experience without all the traffic or the all- inclusive magnitude. In their place are 33, two-story villas framing two lakes that feed a 74-acre vineyard.

By Valle standards, rooms are enormous, with rich woods, slate floors, granite bathrooms, and décor in muted greys and beige. In addition to a private terrace, we had our own Jacuzzi, kitchen, lounge, and fireplace. Unlike many hotels in this area, El Cielo offered a shuttle, wedding chapel, concierge, 24-hour room service, and personal butlers to schedule wine tastings, bike tours, and beyond.

If the 5-star digs weren’t enough, the heart and vision behind it all certainly was. El Cielo is pedaling toward becoming the first carbon-neutral hotel in Valle, setting up an infrastructure for solar, grey water, and organic certification. In the works are a spa, gym, new pool, and additional culinary services.

Until then, we would drink wine.

Oh, and pluck grapes, and hold a falcon, and stomp grapes, and join a cooking class, and then drink wine again. It was all part of our afternoon tour that was buttoned up with a visit to the wine cellar where we made our own blend.

We still have the bottle to prove it, a dark Malbec–Sangiovese named after our fur-born, “Chucho Loco” (Spanish for “crazy mutt”).

While we have yet to pop the cork, it holds a place of prominence on our wine rack as a symbol of deliverance.

For 18 months, we had blissfully confined ourselves to the complacency of our private dwelling. Somehow, two destinations just across the border had broken that paradigm within a matter of eight days, reminding us of the freedom that can only come with leaving home.

Pillbox Tavern TINA AFTER DARK

I love a nice surprise, and any time a hole-in-the-wall bar and grill turns out to be a great spot to grab some tasty food, that’s a nice surprise. Not sure how I stumbled on this little local bar by the beach about 5 years ago, but since then it has been my go-to casual eatery whenever I am near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. It is located in the spot formerly occupied by Dairy Queen and Solana Sushi. The space has now been revamped with an industrial casual vibe with a roll-up garage door window in the front, high-top booths and a nine-seat bar. The surf-themed décor includes a large black-and-white wall poster of nearby Fletcher Cove and a table decorated with a map of all the surf breaks from Pillbox to Stone Steps in Encinitas.

Despite the name, it is anything but medicinal. Instead, the Pillbox is filled with great eats and a solid selection of craft beers. There are plenty of TVs for watching games and a nice outdoor deck for people watching. Our favorite is the Pillbox Burger, a blend of Angus beef, salt and pepper handpressed into a thick, juicy patty, served on a choice of bun with house Tavern sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion and options of cheese and bacon. It is always perfectly cooked and especially filled with a generous side of crispy tater tots. We pair it with their house IPA and top it with sports playing in the background and the salty ocean breeze, it simply can’t get any more heavenly than this.

Shrimp Al Mezcal caught my eyes simply because the word “mezcal” is associated with tequila so I had to give it a try. This “Mexican Gumbo” was so delicious, we inhaled it pretty quickly. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the mezcal soup base with cilantro rice was a great combination. But Pillbox is actually famous for their wings and there are 14 flavors to try. Oddly, we haven’t had a chance to try the wings at all. But that is the reason I will have to come back here again soon.

The Pillbox Tavern is a short walk from both the beach and Cedros. This is a great spot for eats before seeing a show or after a surf, after a trip to Culture Brewery or before rocking out at Saddle Bar next door. If you’re anywhere in the Solana Beach area, then the Pillbox is a must-stop for you. I know I will be back soon!

Let me preface that these are just recommendations to take 5). FIESTA DEL SOL RETURNS WITH BIG LINEUP, NEW LAYOUT Fiesta del Sol returns to Solana Beach May 21-22 with a new layout and bigger-than-ever music lineup.

After a two-year hiatus brought by the pandemic, the 41st Fiesta del Sol also is recapturing its traditional spot on the calendar — the weekend before Memorial Day — to launch North County into summer 2022.

Presented by the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Belly Up, the event includes something for everyone, food trucks and all manner of arts, crafts, goods and services displayed in hundreds of booths. Community performances are scheduled on both the Main Stage and the Unplugged Stage. On Sunday, Solana Beach firefighters will host a pancake breakfast.

“After two years of shutdowns and surges, North County is ready to celebrate with this awesome, annual tradition,” said Chris Goldsmith, president of Belly Up Entertainment.

Booked by the Belly Up, the main stage entertainment includes reggae legend Don Carlos; “yacht rock” band Yacthley Crew; Common Sense; Thee Sacred Souls; Lily Meola; BetaMaxx; The Petty Breakers; Sully Band; Atomic Groove; Bella Lux dancers, and more. The hosts are local surf celebrity Chris Cote (Saturday) and 91X DJ Lou Niles (Sunday).

The Children’s area has been relocated to Fletcher Cove park and will host a Trampoline set on Saturday and a Climbing wall on Sunday and will be offered at no cost for Fiesta attendees. There will also be an Epic Video Game Bus, face painters, and oversized interactive family games like Jenga, Connect Four, Cornhole and more for families to enjoy.

An expanded concert area includes raised, VIP seating with a private bathroom and bar. In addition, a wrist band system will allow legal-age patrons to walk freely around the concert area with the beverage of their choice without being confined to a “beer garden.”

There is a great lineup of food trucks and food vendors that will bring delicious items for you to choose from. The City of Solana Beach is sponsoring a Refillable Water Station for those that bring their Water Bottles. The Solana Beach Chamber will also be selling a great re-usable Fiesta del Sol water bottle!

“We have missed throwing Solana Beach’s biggest party and can’t wait to get back to this great, community tradition,” said Ron Blumberg, co-president, Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce.

GI FILM FESTIVAL SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES 2022 AWARD NOMINATIONS WITH IN 13 CATEGORIES LOCAL UMBRELLA MEDIA IS PROUD TO SUPPORT THE GI FILM FESTIVAL AGAIN IN 2022

Nominees and winners to be recognized at May 21 Awards Celebration hosted by military veteran and stand-up comedian, Thom Tran After weeks of tabulation, organizers of the GI Film Festival San Diego have released the list of films, actors and directors nominated for awards ahead of the multi-day event, which will take place May 17-21, 2022 at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in Balboa Park. Nominees were selected from an impressive lineup of 26 military-themed films that will be screened in person at this year’s GI Film Festival San Diego.

Celebrating films by, for and about the military Award winners spanning 13 categories will be announced Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the GI Film Festival San Diego Awards Celebration, which begins at 7 p.m. at MOPA. Stand-up comedian and army combat veteran Thom Tran returns as host this year. After a combat injury ended his career as a soldier, Tran created “The GIs of Comedy Tour,” a comedy troupe of troops, that has toured the world performing to audiences both military and civilian, bringing the healing power of laughter to those who need it most.

Registration is required to attend the Awards Celebration, and the evening event is open to the public. Tickets to the Awards Celebration are $40 for general admission and $35 for military, veterans and KPBS members. All Access passes, which are available for $125, include admission to the Awards Celebration. Seven years of screenings With San Diego’s multi-faceted military history and seven major bases between the Navy, Marines and the Coast Guard, it’s only fitting that the region is home to the largest military film festival in the United States. Since its inception in 2015, the GI Film Festival San Diego has presented more than 200 films from all over the world, U.S., and San Diego County, and has attracted thousands of attendees from various backgrounds.

The festival has also hosted several celebrities whose films had been presented at GI Film Festival San Diego events, including documentary filmmakers Ken Burns and Ric Burns; actor and activist George Takei; actor Matthew Marsden; actor/producer/director Jeffrey Wright; and actor/director Brenda Strong.

Every year, members of the GI Film Festival San Diego Advisory Committee help review films for final selection.

The film festival has active support from several military-related organizations, such as Project Recover, Workshops for Warriors, Travis Manion Foundation, Elizabeth Hospice, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Blue Star Families San Diego, San Diego Military Family Collaborative, Armed Services YMCA, Southern Caregiver Resource Center, Courage to Call, and Joan & Art Barron Veterans Center at San Diego State University. Members of the advisory committee come from various military backgrounds, including veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, as well as Air Force Reserves, and several military spouses, all who volunteer their time, talent and expertise to ensure the festival provides an authentic view of the military experience and engages its audience through post-screening discussions.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET HIGH TO ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF CANNABIS (and Senior-High, for that matter)

Maybe this is going to sound weird coming from Senior-High’s Chief Marketing Officer and Head Lackey, but I don’t like to get high. I really don’t. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I’d prefer a glass or two of Pinot Noir or the occasional bone-dry martini (no vermouth and shaken, not stirred).

So you’re probably wondering, “Then what in the wide wide world of sports are you doing working for a resource that advocates cannabis products for seniors?”

The truth is that I’m a firm believer in the medicinal benefits of cannabis, particularly for us old farts. If you want to get stoned, have at it.

But personally I don’t like the feeling I get from smoking, vaping or ingesting THC. That’s just me.

Well, and maybe you.

We’ve heard from several people our age that they’re not interested in cannabis (or Senior-High, for that matter) because they don’t want to get high. But the difference is that you can enjoy cannabis (and Senior-High, for that matter) without getting high. I do. I use a nonTHC tincture every day to help me cope with stress. As I’ve written in the product reviews section of Senior-High’s website, Healer makes a wonderful tincture that has made me far less grumpy. I get all the benefit without the feeling that I’m stoned.

ach day our nation looses an average of 245 Veterans who served their country in World War II, and those who remain are fast approaching and some already having passed their centennial. Four outstanding members of the greatest generation live with us here in San Diego, and each recently recounted a small portion of their selfless contributions to preserve our cherished freedoms many so often take for granted.

Tom Rice, 98, U.S. Army 101st Airborne Born and bred in San Diego?

Yes, right here in Coronado in that small cottage over my right shoulder.

Where were you on Pearl Harbor Day?

On a basketball court with three other fellows. We had a portable radio blaring away and they broke in with the announcement. We couldn’t believe what we were hearing. As unsettled as things were, I decided that I should complete my sophomore year at college before enlisting.

How long was your training before your first combat jump?

We trained for 13 weeks at an isolated region in Georgia and went on to Fort Benning jump school. Eventually we reached a staging area at Camp Myles Standish outside of Boston.

We were well trained, in great shape and when asked to do push ups, we asked which arm?

When did you transfer to Europe?

We boarded the troop ship USNS George W. Goethals in a convoy 10 days across the Atlantic. We I was not a Navy man, so at 20 years old I joined the staged at Lambourn, England in an old monastery Army, and I think the only one from Coronado at the with 1,400 year old walls surrounding it. It was January time to do so. I’m a type A individual, so jumping out 1, 1944. We continued training and near summer we of airplanes fit me just right. I first joined the 501st regiment, which later combined with the 101st Airborne trucked to a marshaling area at Maryfield, when on “Screaming Eagles” as we grew its strength in numbers. June 6, we flew in a C-47 with 18 paratroopers on board and some 982 planes in the air.

Were you dropped over target?

Nowhere near. Pathfinders, a select group of trained paratroopers are chosen to reach the proposed landing zone in advance and mark it out for the pilots to see. For whatever reason, that did not occur.

Over the English Channel, the aircraft dropped down to some 500 feet to avoid enemy radar, taking about 1 hour to reach land. As we approached a drop zone, I began to see explosions on the ground.

Each man carried about 136 pounds of gear and we had added equipment strapped to the belly of the aircraft, which was to be released over target. The jump light stays white while en route, goes red 8 minutes out and then green when over target. I was to be the first man out, however, they released the equipment baggage underneath early, which lurched the aircraft some 50 feet upward and I was thrown from the door with my left arm wedge in the opening, thrusting me back against the aircraft a number of times before I could disengage and clear the plane.

Was that jump over Normandy your first combat mission?

It was and we were engaged for 37 days and had 38% casualties.

Having completed our mission, we made our way to Utah beach and thereafter back to Lambourn to train new recruits to fill the gaps left open in our ranks. We were seasoned troops by then and you could see that it had a sobering affect on the new men. Our next objective was to jump in behind enemy lines to destroy their supply chain. We made the next jump into Holland, September 17, 1944 On what occasion did you have your greatest fear?

I was in charge of a reconnaissance patrol outside a small village in Belgium. There were only 5 among us and as we approached the village, we took sniper fire and I was hit both above the knee and in my right arm. I was out on point and I instructed the others to return for added support. I lay in bales of hay for cover and I thought certain that they would light up the hay with machine gun fire or come out after me before support arrived. Those were harrowing moments. I had injected myself with morphine, and had little ability to maneuver with those injuries. My men did make it back and I was sent to hospital in England, where they planned to send me Stateside, however, I requested to return to the fight and was in France when the war in Europe ended.

Word has it that you returned to jump Normandy again.

I have jumped 4 times in Europe in recent years, the last being with a group of French paratroopers on the D-Day celebration in 2019.

Do you consider yourself a hero?

There are so many definitions of what a hero is and I do understand that we as a people need our heroes. I do not consider myself to be one.

Has Honor Flight San Diego made a difference in your life?

Definitely. They have added so much to my life, providing transport to see the memorials as well as connecting me with others who served.

What message to those who take freedom for granted?

It has been well said that freedom is not free. At different times in our nation’s history, there comes a price to pay to preserve our freedoms, and someone has to stand up to pay it. I would suggest for everyone to take a moment of time and watch the documentary “Libertas” to get a real feeling for what it was like on that eventual day of June 6, 1944.

Born and bred in San Diego?

Actually not, but so happy to have come here. I was born in Leavenworth, Kansas. I briefly served in the Army and then joined the Navy in 1939. My first duty station was San Diego.

Where were you on Pearl Harbor Day?

I was attending photography school in Pensacola, Florida. Part of our duties had us flying over the ocean on the lookout for German submarines. After Pensacola, they sent me to Pearl Harbor and I was tasked to remove the unexploded ammunition from damaged ships.

Thereafter, as a photographer, I was issued a top secret clearance and I transferred to New Caledonia on assignments for Admiral “Bull” Halsey.

He was a no-nonsense, demanding sort of guy who wanted photographs of the islands that he was planning to retake from the Japanese.

We flew reconnaissance like we did in Pensacola in the same type of SNJ aircraft, but this time looking for landing sites for the Marines to go ashore and what defenses the Japanese might have established. We took ground fire on almost every flight, which is never a comfortable feeling.

I stayed with Admiral Halsey throughout the war.

On what occasion did you have your greatest fear?

I never was a good swimmer, and one of my assignments was to accompany an Underwater Demolition Team on a submarine that surfaced in the middle of the night for our swim to shore. UDT would show up and return me back to the submarine. I also helped as a grader for runways on Guadalcanal and took my share of sniper fire. Hard to say whether the swim or the sniper fire was the greater fear.

Do you consider yourself a hero?

Where were you when the war ended?

Admiral Halsey had given me a 30 day leave and I returned to the States for a long-awaited break from duty. I actually was at Yosemite Park, 3rd in line at a gas station when they announced the war ended. Gas had been rationed during the war, so we were so happy to get a full tank.

No. As with so many, I did what was expected of me and there were so many who did not return. The entire experience taught me so much. I got to produce great photography and it taught me leadership, which made a great difference in my life.

Has Honor Flight San Diego played a role in your life?

Absolutely. It is a great organization that has provided me the chance to visit the monuments to our fallen heroes and connected me with so many who also served during those years.

What message to those who take freedom for granted?

I was an orphan child and had a hard row to hoe in my younger years, which led to a great appreciation for the opportunities that eventually came my way. For many in today’s world, the challenges have been fewer and perhaps not as demanding. Thus the appreciation of what they have and what they have been given, with so many loosing their very lives to defend our freedom, for them the appreciation seems not so strong. I accept that not everyone will look upon the sacrifices made by others to keep us a free nation with the same token of appreciation, and I do wish them well.

Ruth Gallivan, 104, United States Marine Corps Where did you go to boot camp?

I went to boot camp at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. It was mostly drill, learning the history of the Corps and administrative duties. We never received combat training. I became a technical Sergeant and was assigned to communications and administration.

Did you feel respected by the men who were serving in the Corps at the time?

The male Marines did not like us at all, since it seemed as though we were doing all of the easy work and they were being sent overseas to fight, which was the idea from the start. I took a troop train to California and was stationed at Miramar. We had our own barracks, mess hall and a separate Post Exchange. In those days they kept us well separated. The bottom floor of our barracks was allowed for visiting.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps at the time saw little use for women in the Corps, however, over time, he came to change his mind, since the duties that we fulfilled here in the States freed up a lot more men who were combat trained to fill his ranks overseas. We took great pride in that and did our best to honor what the Marine Corps expected of us.

Where were you on Pearl Harbor day?

I was working at the time in Milwaukee.

Which branch of the military did you join?

I had been working at a manufacturing plant and decided to do something more exciting. I was 24 years old at the time and thought why not join the Marine Corps. It was 1943 at the time I decided to join.

It was such a different time in those days.

We always had to be in uniform, both on and off base. Some of us would hitchhike up to Los Angeles on the weekends. Ladies in uniform with their thumbs out and we would instantly get a ride. People were so friendly to us during my time at Miramar as we all felt so united in our efforts.

I was stationed at Miramar throughout the war and was there when it ended.

Was your time having served in the Marine Corps a highly positive experience?

It was and I still maintain a connection with the Women Marine Association. WMA is a national organization and we meet monthly to do some administrative work and of course, socialize with women Marines.

Did you know that you are the oldest woman Marine west of the Mississippi?

I had heard that and hope to continue to keep that honor for some time to come.

Has Honor Flight San Diego made a difference in your life?

Oh yes. A couple of years ago, they were kind enough to send me to Washington, D.C. and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Actually, it was the Lincoln Memorial that to me was the most impressive. I wish that every American has the chance to visit.

What message to those who take freedom for granted?

All of the people that I know and have met do appreciate the sacrifices made by so many to preserve our freedom. Perhaps not on a daily basis, but surely they know. Hard to imagine how anyone could not.

I was born in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1921.

Where were you on Pearl Harbor Day?

I was aboard the USS West Virginia, berthed in Pearl Harbor, and was the coxswain on deck and the gunner during General Quarters, which is the call to defend the ship.

I was on the top deck at the time of the attack.

How old were you at the time?

A 20-year old brat that grew up on a day in December.

Was your ship hit during the attack?

We had 9 torpedos hit the ship along with two armored piercing shells unleashed from the Japanese aircraft, together with blistering fire from their machine guns.

We had 27 fires burning at one time. One of the shells went directly through the Bridge and instantly killed the Admiral and his staff. I was amazed that the ship managed to stay afloat.

Guadacanal was worse because we had so many ships sunk at Guadacanal. As long as the flag can fly from any part of the ship, the ship is not considered sunk. Even the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor flies its flag from the stern and is not considered as being a sunken vessel.

I visit the schools a lot and try to communicate the importance of what the men and women did to preserve our nation and ultimately their freedoms. I also try to encourage them to set goals and to follow those goals, and to say that even in these times we need to remain vigilant. Hopefully, it makes an impression on some if not all.

Josh Rosenblum / Green Eyed

Perpetually on tour, guitarist Josh Rosenblum originally hails from Modesto, is currently based in Atascadero, but spends his time largely living out of a suitcase, racking up the road miles as he takes his music from town to town.

At the moment, he’s touring in support of his latest album, Green Eyed, released

by Point Loma’s Pacific Records. It’s not an easy way to make a living, but Rosenblum has the talent and most importantly, the drive, to fully pursue his dream.

While Rosenblum falls into the singer-songwriter category by default, his music is much more expansive than that tag. “Our genre has always been a tricky one to classify over the years,” Rosenblum said. “We’ve called it funky pop/ rock, bluesy folk/pop, jazzy funk/rock.

It’s a little bit of everything, but I think somewhere in the middle of fusing these genres is where we derive our definitive sound from.”

The ninth album in his discography, he considers Green Eyed to be an important release for him. “It’s an album I always wanted to do,” Rosenblum said. “I wanted an album that featured as many of the talented musicians we play with live throughout the state as possible.

Getting them on a record was a really special thing. It was a tremendous pleasure having special guests such as Nicole Row bringing her amazingly intuitive bass talents in for “Nobody’s Right (Nobody’s Wrong),” as well as Mark Pender and Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg of the Miami Horns (and Conan O’Brien’s house band) for soloing on and spicing up our tune, “Drive”. Hearing all of the musicians we play with in one place was a surreal experience come to life.”

Videos are planned for several songs on the new album, but Rosenblum considers touring to still be a vital method of getting his music out. “Touring is definitely still prevalent in the digital age,” he said good naturedly. “It’s a tried and true, grass roots method of getting music to the people instantaneously and should never be overlooked as an opportunity for success. Where socially media has its pros, playing live in front of actual people is something you will only get better at from doing it, and unfortunate-

ly playing to a phone isn’t the same, as the pandemic proved.” It’s important to him to take art directly to the people.

“It’s ironic that the more social media we absorb ourselves in, the less social we become in real life. Human interaction is a blessing we took for granted during the closures, and I’m thankful that being able to tour again has helped the music community realize how much we actually need each other.”

Although Rosenblum is known as guitarist, his original choice of instrument was at the other end of the spectrum.

“I started on trumpet and my original musical dream was to be a full-time jazz trumpet player, until my focused shifted to being a singer-songwriter,” he recalled.

“I still play trumpet today and actually play trumpet on all my records, with the occasional sit-in by my father, Michael, as well.”

While trumpet was quickly sidelined as a main instrument, it made Rosenblum want to make music his career.

“My first performance outside of school was at age 15, on lead trumpet for a local band called Tradewinds,” he recalled.

“It was a big band type group with all adults. So being a teenager in this setting was intimidating, but inspiring. On guitar, the first performance I played was for a small lunch time talent show in High School at age 16. I played “Neon”

From there it was Rosenblum’s brother, Andrew, who led the way to guitar.

“He inspired me to play in the beginning when I was 15, and after he taught me the fundamentals, I started teaching myself everything else that I possibly could, and it’s still a never ending, exciting journey of growth.”

While music can be a tough way to make a living, Rosenblum doesn’t see other artists as competition. “What motivates me to keep going is remembering to run my own race,” he said. “Music is unnecessarily treated in a competitive nature in so many facets today that it’s exhausting to keep up. It’s important to realize that everyone is on their own track. If we are to involve ourselves in anyone else’s career, it should only be to lift them up.” He notes that certain television programs can add to the divisiveness. “The various reality game shows can be discouraging, but they are not for everyone, nor are these the only way to make it. Staying true to the reason I got into music and running my own race has been my mantra recently.”

With more road trips and recording ahead, Rosenblum is looking forward to a busy summer and beyond. “My favorite thing about being a musician is being able to create a community, and the instant gratitude that exists to and from the audience during a live show,” he said.

Sofar Sounds Concerts / It’s A Secret Adding a bit of mystery and excitement into the live music experience, Sofar Sounds promotes concerts that are equal parts performance and event.

Originating in London circa 2009, Sofar (an acronym for Songs From A Room) Sounds now operates in over 400 cities, including San Diego since 2015, growing in popularity exponentially ever since. Fans can sign up for the stand-alone events in their own neighborhoods, with the exact location of the show revealed via e-mail the day before. It might be a commercial space or a residence. Artists remain a secret until show time, with a general set up of three performers playing short sets and audiences ranging from 50 – 100 in size.

Tori Roze recently performed a Sofar Sounds show with her band, The Hot Mess. “These shows are something I’ve kept my eye on ever since they started creating and curating shows a few years back,” she said. “I personally adore an intimate show more than any that could fill an arena.

While Sofar has been on my radar for quite some time; it was only recently that I reached out to their team. Based purely off of our submission, they chose us to perform at one of their super cool shows! You know the saying, it’s all about perfect timing.”

The bands performance turned out to be outdoors at the Modern Times Brewery in Point Loma. “There were about 75 people in attendance and each set was 25 mins long, which is the perfect amount of time to give new listeners a sampling of your very best original music.” In addition to Tori Roze & The Hot Mess, Carmela and Youngtones also performed.

Roze was pleased with the experience. “It was absolutely wonderful from start to finish,” she said. “Communication was on point, the sound was perfecto, the venue was decked out in its finest Sofar garb, the concert was outside - which is much needed in these pandemic times- the beer was delicious, the audience was extremely attentive, and it felt really nice to be musically appreciated before even walking through the door.” She considers a Sofar Sounds gig to be a rite of passage “because everyone whom I musically respect has done one of these amazing sound offerings at one time or another within the lifetime of their career.”

Roze would love to be a part of more Sofar Sounds events. “If they will have us,” she said good naturedly. “It’s not often that you just get to show up and be creative without having to worry about major logistics, so I can appreciate

everything they are doing for artists both wellknown and unknown across the globe.”

She considers the fact that artists aren’t named until showtime to be a plus. “It was a major relief to not feel pressured into having to promote anything because these are generally curated shows with a built-in audience of music lovers who don’t care who is playing,” Roze said. “And that’s the goal…to have folks trusting your taste so they know they are guaranteed a good time no matter what. I wish more venues and bookers would operate under this thought process and show model - it truly changes the game for everyone involved.” Roze also enjoys the wide ranging bills diversity. “I really dig the fact that these shows are a melting pot of varying musical styles and acts from different cities. Artist Spotlight / Lou Lollio A musician and actor based in Encinitas, Lou Lollio performs Christian Contemporary music, recently releasing his latest album, Praise and Worship Volume 5. “Being locked down with covid restrictions and getting covid myself encouraged me to release this new album at this time,” he said. “I thought that having this music available would help people who have been locked in for such a long time.”

The album’s first single / video is “It’s Because of You.” Lollio has appeared on such programs as ABC-TV’s General Hospital and performed with groups such as the Buffalo Springfield Revisited, in a long career as an entertainer. As an artist he has been inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin and Phil Wickham “both as songwriters and musicians,” he said. His earliest musical inspiration is much closer to home. “My mother Dorothy was a member of the Acord Family Singers out of West Virginia,” he said. “She was a gospel singer and a guitarist, as well as a mandolin and piano player. She taught me the guitar at a young age although I didn’t really play it until my teen years.”

Plans are to promote the new album through a bit of road work. “I currently have a group called the Jesus Worship Band,” Lollio said. In addition to Lollio (vocals, guitar, mandolin, piano), the current lineup is Bob Mansueto (lead guitar), Curtiss Matovich (piano, strings) and Dennis Compos (guitar, percussion). “We’ve been touring for three years now. Most of (that) has been with covid hanging over our heads, but we still continued doing live outdoor concerts throughout the three years. Now I have tours in planning for Nashville, NY, NJ, Pennsylvania.”

For his part, Lollio is simply happy to be making music. “I love writing songs, then recording them and then I get to perform them live. So all of these things make being a musician a blast,” he said. Indeed, work on a sixth album is already under way. The music business can be difficult at the best of times, but Lollio doesn’t worry about that. “Since I have the Joy of Lord Jesus, I don’t have to worry about how tough the music biz is,” he said. “I get to sing, perform and Worship the Lord all at the same time. Get Well Soon Joel Kmak!

There’s bad news for fans of legendary rockers, The Farmers. Drummer Joel Kmak will be out of commission through most of the summer. “I broke my leg in three places,” Kmak explained. “I broke my pedal leg. Luckily the surgeon said drumming will be good therapy.

I just had surgery, so I’m out of a busy Farmers schedule for three months. Ouchhhhh!”

Kmak is perhaps best known for his work with The Farmers, but he’s played with a string of bands going back to the late 1970’s, with The Hitmakers, Powerthud and most recently, The Secret Squares, amongst his resume highlights.

“The thing about The Farmers is that we’re all great friends and love hanging out with each other,” said Farmers guitarist Jerry Raney.

“We’re not quite Bongolia without him. He needs to come and hang out as soon as he can.

He doesn’t have to be able to play, we just want him there with us. We’re saving his spot.”

While Kmak is recovering, the show must go on, so Farmers guitarist Nathan Raney will shift to drums for the foreseeable future. “Nate is a very good drummer. He has been playing since he was five years old and knows what he’s doing,” Raney said. “He watched Country Dick and picked up on the dang merciless snare hammer.

He’s doing a fantastic job filling in for Bongo, they’re both powerful guys!”

While he’s recovering, with no gigs and unable to work his day job, Kmak could use our help. “I am self-employed, with literally no income for however long this takes,” he said. “I had to call my scheduled jobs and refer them to my competition. By Tu Nguyen In this month’s article, I would like to highlight one of our very important community leaders, Mr. Bryan Schultz. Mr. Schultz has been a principal at Del Norte High School since 2018. He has an extensive background and experience as an educator and as a principal. Prior to Del Norte High School, Mr. Schultz was a principal for the Cajon Valley School District; and prior to that, he worked for the Sweet Water School District in South Bay for 17 years.

Mr. Schultz has been married to his wife, Heidi, for 27 years; that is a success story in itself.

Heidi is a high school teacher for the Grossmont School District. They have two adult kids, 27-year-old Caleb, who is currently working as an engineer, and 23-year-old Kayleigh, who is currently working on her master’s program in England. They also have a family dog named “Chocolate.”

Aside from managing the school and keeping it running smoothly, Mr. Schultz also fills in as a substitute teacher whenever one of his teachers is not available on any particular day.

This is due to the shortage of substitute teachers for the district. There’s no doubt Mr. Schultz can substitute because of his extensive experience as an educator.

I asked Mr. Schultz what some of the challenges were he and his staff saw when students returned to in-person learning.

He said there were a lot of challenges, but one of the biggest challenges he recognized was students’ lack of ability to interact with one another. The transition from classroom online via Zoom to in-person learning was something many students had to learn to integrate after almost two years of school lockdown due to COVID. Younger students didn’t develop their cognitive skills to help them transition from middle school to high school. Therefore, it manifested during their high school years. School days were augmented during COVID so when they came back to school in-person and having a normal full school day, many students lacked stamina. It not only affected students, but staff as well.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and what they went through with the pandemic was unprecedented. I asked if he would do anything differently now looking back. Mr. Schultz said there was no playbook for what they went through. He and his staff had to make many decisions in real time and things shifted so quickly and frequently. Their goal was to get students back on campus as quickly as they can, but also as safely as possible.

Because things worked out the way they did, he would not do anything differently. As they are now moving forward, things are starting to get back to normalcy and students are starting to integrate better. He noticed a huge improvement in past month or two.

Del Norte High School is a great school since its inception about 14 years ago to its present time. When Mr. Schultz began in 2018, he took the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. He pretty much continued with the culture and traditions set by his predecessor, and just kept that positive culture moving forward. Del Norte Hish School has grown significantly in the last four years. When Mr. Schultz started in 2018, there were about 2,100 students; they are now at about 2,600.

Del Norte High School is far above the state average in key measures of college and career readiness. Mr. Schultz equates the success of the school to the culture of excellence created by the staff and faculty, high expectations established by the school and parents in the last 14 years, and the Poway Unified School District does an excellent job preparing students to be ready to learn as they get to high school level.

What Mr. Schultz would like people in the community to know about Del Norte High School is faculty and staff there have a deep appreciation for the students, they have unbelievable work ethic to promote learning to their students at all levels and it permeates throughout the campus.

If your kids go to Del Norte High School, they’re in good hands. Have them tell Mr. Schultz they saw a “local celebrity” on the “92127 Community Hub” newspaper.
