LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Fall, Fashion & Fun

Every year I simply cannot resist shouting from the mountaintops how much I love fall.

I love everything about it (except that it tends to set my seasonal allergies off but what else is new?!).

I love the temperatures, the urges to get outside more and love, love, love the fashion boots and sweaters and layering, oh my!

Enough about me. Let's talk about what's inside this edition. One of our favorite things to do is to highlight locals who are either doing some thing good for the community or making their lives and passions matter. We especially love it when all of that is rolled into one. In this issue, we're featuring a group of entrepreneurs that's comprised of ambitious, hardworking, tenacious people from all walks of life. Their stories, their drive and their accomplishments are inspiring and impressive.

We think you'll agree. Hope to see you around ;-)

PREVENTION

Did you know that one third of older adults living at home fall every year? Did you also know that one out of every five falls results in a serious injury of broken bones or head injury?

There are many factors that increase the risk of falling in older adults, including balance disorders, chronic illnesses, mobility issues and impaired vision. Many falls cause at least some injury from mild bruising to broken bones, head injuries, and even death. In fact, falls are a leading cause of death in older adults. BUT, most falls can be prevented.

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF FALLING:

ANNUAL EYE EXAMS: Eye diseases like cataracts and glaucoma reduce your ability to see properly. Also, as your eyes age, less light reaches the retina—making contrast ing edges, tripping hazards and obstacles harder to see.

MEDICATIONS EVALUATION: Some overthe-counter medications and prescriptions can cause dehydration, dizziness, or interac tions with each other that can lead to a fall.

HOME ASSESSMENT: Keep objects off of the floor, remove rugs or other tripping hazards, use brighter bulbs to help you see better and install grab bars and handrails where necessary.

GET A FULL RISK ASSESSMENT: This is a helpful tool to see how “at risk” you are. Not many places do it ( Envision Wellness does!).

STRENGTH AND BALANCE PROGRAM: Exercise is great but you may need specific things to improve your balance and strength. A customized approach to your weak areas is key for your progress and prevention.

Prevention is always the key, so schedule your complimentary fall risk assessment today!

FOUR FALL foot tips

you NEED TO KNOW

Fall temperatures are here, and that means a change in footwear.

If you are accustomed to wearing sandals and flip-flops during the summer months, the thought of squeezing your feet into poor-fitting, close-toed shoes may have you groaning.

Here are a few tips on getting prepared for fall and winter so you and your family can seamlessly and painlessly transition from strappy sandals to warm boots:

1.

GET YOUR FEET MEASURED

Many people wear shoes that are too small, too wide, etc. When your feet have been correctly measured, you will be able to select shoes with proper arch support, no slipping, and less pain in the ball of your foot.

2. SHOP FOR SHOES IN THE AFTERNOON

If you’re in the market for new fall or winter shoes, be sure to shop for them in the after noon when your feet are at their largest.

3. YOUR SHOES SHOULDN’T NEED TO BE “BROKEN IN”

Your shoes should be comfortable when you first try them on. Choose boots with lots of toe room and a firm heel counter (the back of the shoe that provides support), and a heel two inches or lower.

4. TREAT ANY KNOWN TOENAIL CONDITIONS

Make sure that any toenail conditions have been properly taken care of before wearing close-toed shoes again. Conditions like ingrown toenails and nail or foot fungus can be aggravated in the warm, moist confines of a boot or cold weather shoe.

HOME INVENTORY

Over half of households don't have a home inventory and the majority of those that do haven't updated them with new purchases since it was first completed. A current invento ry of all personal items in your home is helpful when filing a police report or insurance claim if there is an incident and you don't have a home inventory, you will be forced to create one from memory to estimate your loss.

Imagine you're in this position; would you be able to make an accurate list of your belong ings and their values? As an exercise, pick a room in your home. From another room, see if you can list all the belongings (and their values). When finished with the list, go into that room and see how accurate you were.

This little experiment should demonstrate the importance of having an up-to-date home inventory and the difficulty of reconstructing one after a loss.

An accurate inventory means that you and your insurance agent will be able to properly insure your belongings and, if you need to file a claim, make that process easier. Other reasons for having a home inventory include creating a maintenance calendar, helping you declutter by getting rid of items no longer needed and some peace of mind. It provides confidence that your life is organized and you're prepared should you need to prove loss. This will also help you and your family return to normal life quicker after an unsettling event.

Download the Home Inventory form Info Guides at betterhomeowners/DanFuhrman or scan the QR code on the website for more tips on creating one, along with alternatives for documenting your belongings. If you don't have another media, this will allow you to take pictures and list individual items along with values in a fillable PDF that can easily be stored safely in your online cloud.

Jesse JAMES

VISITS COMPANY SHOPS

As improbable as it might seem, the legendary Wild West outlaw Jesse James, along with his older brother Frank, spent several months hiding out in the Alamance County area a little over 150 years ago. It might seem strange that there would be any connection at all between the James family and Alamance County, but indeed there was.

Jesse was born and raised in Clay County, Missouri and quite a few people who settled there came from Alamance County. For example, one of Jesse’s closest childhood friends was Joel Thomas Albright. Although Joel was born in Clay County, his parents, Daniel and Amelia Holt Albright were from Graham. In fact, so many of Joel’s Holt relatives lived in Clay County that they founded the town of Holt, near the James farm. Joel not only went to school with the James brothers, he married their first cousin, Sarah Jane Cole.

Another close friend of the James brothers was James Robert “Jim” Cummins, whose parents were from Guilford County, just west of Ossipee and Altamahaw. Jim attended school with Jesse, fought in the Civil War with him as members of “Bloody Bill” Anderson’s guerilla group, and later joined the James gang.

At the end of the Civil War, Jesse James never accepted the surrender and continued his guerilla ways, although he focused almost exclusively on bank and train robberies. After the robbery of a bank in Russellville, Kentucky on March 20, 1868, Jesse and Frank James dropped out of sight for more than a year.

Although no one knew where the James brothers had gone except family and friends, Jesse and Frank came to North Carolina and stayed for a while at the home of Nellie Pritchett Vincent in Thompsonville, in Rockingham County, close to the northwest corner of Alamance County. Nellie was the aunt of their childhood friend, James S. Holt, who had moved with his parents to Clay County in 1851 and went to school with Jesse and Jim Cummins.

Known as the Williamsburg Community, that part of Rockingham County was very rural and isolated. Several families in that area have many oral traditions of the time the James brothers spent there in 1868. All of them agree on several points: that the James brothers frequently went to church, were interested in horses and horse races, and often made visits to Locust Hill, in Caswell County, and to Company Shops and Graham in Alamance County.

8 INDIE PUBLISHING | SPECIAL EDITION ♦ FALL 2022
our
TOWN

While here, Frank James used the pseudonym “J. Ed. Warren,” while Jesse used the name “J. T. Jackson.”

It has been speculated that Jesse and Frank James took part in Ku Klux Klan-like activities in Alamance County. The local chapter, called the “White Brotherhood,” had been founded by Graham lawyer Jacob Alson “Jake” Long. Jake’s older brother, John Henry Long, had moved to Missouri, near Clay County, about 1857. Moreover, many members of the White Brotherhood had relatives in Clay County.

John Henry Long’s daughter, Pattie Long Newman, who grew up in Clay County but lived in Elon College after her marriage, told friends and family members about “riding in Jesse James’ lap in a wagon” when she was a little girl. She also mentioned that her Uncle Jake Long was a good friend of Jesse’s.

Jesse and Frank James went back to Missouri during the summer of 1869. They were both implicated in the holdup of a bank in Gallatin, Missouri on December 7, 1869, when Jesse shot and killed the cashier, Captain John Sheets. Then the two were publicly proclaimed as outlaws and became national news. A short time later they disappeared again, back to North Carolina.

It is known that Frank and Jesse James were in North Carolina after 1870, but it doesn’t appear that they ever came back to Alamance County. Jesse, however, was in Yanceyville, in Caswell County, in 1876, shortly after his failed robbery attempt in Northfield, Minnesota. While in Yanceyville, Jesse reportedly met with Jake Long, who was trying a case there. Frank James, however, preferred Greensboro and was there with his family in the fall of 1881, when he stayed at the McAdoo House on South Elm Street. He said he would have settled there had there not been an outbreak of diphtheria at the time.

Interestingly, there was another Jesse James in Burlington, but this one (no relation) was Burlington’s chief of police between August 1956 and June 1959.

cleaning has meaning ANOTHER Cathryn Hartwell

for entrepreneur Vikiany Gonzalez

I'd like to introduce you all to my good friend and entrepre neur Vikiany Gonzalez. She is the founder and sole propri etor of Impeccably Clean, a cleaning company that spe cializes in cleaning vacation homes and preparing them for incoming guests. I would not be able to manage the number of vacation rentals I do without Viki.

Viki’s story isn’t a “rags to riches” type of story. It's one of hard work, tenacity and integrity. She is one of the hardest working people I know, and I'm excited to promote her busi ness. She deserves for her story to be told.

I met Vikiany (Viki) several years ago through a close friend who knew I was looking for someone to partner with in preparing and staging a vacation home (short- term rental, as we call them) that I was preparing to manage. Viki is an artist with a good eye for detail. She makes jewelry and other cool things, and also happened to be working as a pharma ceutical technician at Walmart. And like most of us, she was looking to make some extra money so she she agreed to help out. She made it clear, however, that she was willing to “...see if this was something I really want to get involved with for more than a time or two.” After working with me through several reservations, one sentence said it all: “I immediately fell in love with the whole concept!” she told me.

And a team was born. “What I like about working on short term rentals is that I'm not just cleaning a home, I'm creating. I create a space that’s clean and orderly, welcoming and cozy, all at the same time… it’s a balance. I have fun adding subtle touches that seem to make a difference. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard work, but I love that I can work hard AND be creative at the same time. Working as a pharmaceutical tech can be high-stress, but the cleaning/creating rhythm can be very calming.”

The business of vacation rentals has become very compet itive, and guests have high expectations. Because of that,

I have to make sure each house is presented per fectly before the guests arrive. Viki cleans, prepares and stages every part of each house in a way that welcomes our guests from the moment they enter the house. I appreciate her little touches, like leaving the table lamps on in each room the day before the guests are to arrive; a napping blanket draped over a chair; the way she turns the beds down and places a nice display of towels and personal-sized bath prod ucts on the comforters. These are the subtleties that guests may not actually notice independently, but they immediately feel they are in a special place and are being well taken care of they feel at home. Mission accomplished.

As hard as Viki works now, when she was a child she wasn't allowed to do anything remotely close to work the work she's doing today.

“I was one of those kids that had consistent asthma attacks and so my mother was overly protective of me. My family is from Dominican Republic where the

PASSION PROJECT

health care system isn't great and it was difficult to get to the hospital. Because of this my mother, not wanting to risk an asthma attack, rarely let me clean. Like any small child, I wanted help to do the dishes (because of the bubbles of course!), but she was afraid I’d have a reaction to the soap, and so, sadly, I never got the chance to wash dishes. I couldn’t sweep either because the dust would affect my lungs. My own kids would love it if I didn’t allow them to help with the housework!" She smiled reflectively. "It’s kind of funny that 30 years ago I couldn’t even wash the dishes, and today I run my own specialized cleaning company.”

Thanks to Viki and Impeccably Clean, all of our execu tive short-term rentals have 5 star ratings.

I am proud to call Vikiany Gonzalez my trusted associate and my friend, and I highly recommend her. Anyone who owns short-term rental properties in or near Burlington and needs a reliable cleaning company should get in touch with Viki. She can best be contacted by email. You'll be glad you did. gvikiany@gmail.com

OUR COVER STORY

GROWING OUR COMMUNITY & INSPIRING US EVERY DAY meet local entrepreneurs

Like every small community across America, Burlington has experienced its own struggles with opportunity, inclusivity and diversity. What Burling ton has never struggled with is its natural sense of community.

The challenge over the decades has been in the recognizing of (and taking action on) bringing together classes, races and people from all cultural backgrounds and walks of life in a way that just says, "we the people." All communities everywhere struggle with this.

"The cream rises to the top..."

This expression has been around for a long time, and is still relevant and meaningful today: Meaning: A good person or idea cannot go unnoticed for long, just as cream poured in coffee or tea eventually rises to the top.

Following are the individual stories from this remarkable group of entrepreneurs.

They love their community

They take pride in their work

They give back

They care about ALL people

They show (and not tell) us that they are "BURLINGTON STRONG"

Self-taught Contemporary Pop Artist Creating Inspiring Art

A resident of Burlington since the age of five, self-taught artist Aleesha Morgan has not only become an accomplished art ist, she studied business and criminal justice as well. While in complete lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic, she used this time to unlock hidden talents and realize her full potential as an artist.

Allesha's art education began in high school with art classes and shows. After an almost 10-year hiatus, her own style came shining through as she developed her artistic identity, embark ing on what soon became her own art business. "The hardest part of getting started was finding the courage to share my work."

Her first professional endeavor was creating visuals for her own local nutrition shop “Knockout Nutrition.” Working primarily with acrylic paints and chalk mediums, she now creates unique, con temporary pop art for others as well. Aleesha loves conveying messages through her art and inspiring people through its cu rious elements, logic and hidden meanings. She enjoys leaving her art open to interpretation. Her gift of evoking emotions using bright, bold colors to show her admiration for the subject and concept shines through each piece. She finds herself inspired by music, other art forms and by life itself.

It is so fulfilling when people connect with one of my pieces...I aspire to having my own studio and showroom in the near future to further commune with other artists and art lovers...

The healing power of crystals

Jessica Brown has been collecting crystals for over a decade. Now a full-time crystal shop owner, as well as parttime boxing coach (at BX5), Jessica owns her own shop in Burlington. Sunshower Crystals specializes in high-quality crystals, including home decor, towers, spheres, tumbles, statement pieces, crystal jewelry and much more.

"Crystals make fantastic home decor," Jessica says, "and they provide the energy you need to help feed your soul. Did you know some crystals bring energy of protection, self-love, self-growth, and even stress relief?! We want ev eryone who shops with us to feel like they found their own personal magic wand."

A transplant from upstate New York, Jessica has called Burlington home for the past five years.

CHANDRA PULLIAM

Labor of Love Entrepreneurial Journey

Returning home from her college post-baccalaureate in 2009 and amidst a journey in chemistry, the mother-to-be rekindled her love for dance. For the next two years, Chandra Pulliam worked with The City of Burlington to bring the vision of the North Park in Motion to life (made possible by a grant) and I.A.M.M. Dance was born, and still exists today.

"I am proud to say that 50+ girls matriculated through the program during my tenure there. That same year, I became Director of A.R.T Theatrical at New Cove nant Holy Church in Burlington. Through a combination of hands-on learning and pursuit (and completion) of my dance and entrepreneurial degrees, by May 2018 I was ready to start my own business."

On December 5, 2018, Balanced ComPosition Performing Arts was born.

Balanced ComPosition is still in what Chandra deems Stage 1 of her entrepreneurial journey. Her overall professional goal is to create a powerhouse for both children and adults within the community. Cur rently offering ballet, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, liturgical, tap, and dance aerobics, her desire is to offer so much more.

My gift from God is dance, but it's only the tool. I build confidence, strengthen bodies and encourage teamwork. I don’t allow participants to give up I allow them room to create. I give them an audience to applaud their hard work and perseverance, giving them a safe haven of self-definition and exploration beyond limits. I give a piece of my heart to grow theirs.

Thus far on her journey, Chandra has received numerous accolades and reached milestone achievements. She has aspirations of ex panding her dance background, as well as creativity in commercials, film and music production.

VICTORIOUS PHO BAR

uniting us, one meal at a time

Thipp LuangSy has always loved cooking.

I enjoy eating different types of food. I think food is definitely a huge part of life and an important aspect of one’s culture also. Food is the glue that brings people and families together. It is a common bond that unites us all.

Thipp has a long history of family background in Burling ton. Most of her immediate family are of southeast Asian decent. As a small child she recalls many gatherings in which numerous plates and dishes were served. Having also been raised in the United States, she adapted to a variety of other foods and feels that a mixture of both food types is what led her to pursue her passion and business endeavors.

As owner and founder of Victorious Pho Bar, Thipp loves hosting patrons and sometimes even being the first to introduce them to new foods. Known to locals as simple "Pho Bar," the doors were opened in August 2021, offering authenitic foods prepared in-house. One offering, from whence the name Pho Bar comes, is a specialty soup known as “pho," prepared with a variety of herbs and spices sure to please any palate. A beef broth is used as the base of this healthy and nutritional soup (vegetarian broth is also an option). Other dishes the restaurant is known for are savory fresh shrimp rolls, Philly cheesesteak rolls and fried chicken spring rolls. All are prepared in-house using the freshest ingredients.

Stop in and experience the unique dishes for yourselves.

FALL & FABULOUS FASHION

MAKE SOMETHING OLD NEW AGAIN OR KNIT YOUR OWN SCARF, IF YOU HAVE TIME!

JUST DON'T GET TOO CARRIED AWAY WHEN ACCESSORIZING, BUDDY...

Pleasant weather, outdoor treks, & fabulous fall fashion! Does it get any better than this?

We often equate cleaning out our closets with the spring season. But what if we took a spin through our closets to see how we can make the most of our fall clothing before breaking out the wallet and breaking our budget?

As is customary of most seasons, retro can always be "a thing." This fall season is no different. Flared jeans are in again. This is one style of jeans that seems to stand the test of time and trends. This look is great for a date night or girls' night out, as the effect is best achieved with a heeled shoe. If there is one piece to pick out of the fall lineup, this is it! A novelty sweater is a great go-to (we're not talking about the Ugly Christmas Sweater, which can be fun but...). Choose a few sweat ers as your staples for the fall the ones that either go with everything or have that special something that gets you noticed (a tasteful fringed edge, textured, patterned, etc.).

IF FALL IS YOUR FAVORITE SEA SON, MAKE THE MOST OF THE INCREDIBLE WEATHER AND THE FASHION TO-DIE-FOR. DIG OUT THOSE BOOTS , TURTLENECKS, SCARVES, AND EVEN SOME FALL GLAM!

GLAM PAIRED WITH ORDINARY CLOTHING IS ANOTHER TREND THIS FALL. SPARKLES AND RHINESTONES AND GLITTER, OH MY!

LIVE IT UP BEFORE FASHION BECOMES ABOUT KEEPING REEEEALLLLLY WARM...AND LESS ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK.

Patterned pants or skirt are great ways to mix-it-up a little when it comes to adding an interesting element to your wardrobe. It's a natural tendency to pair a patterned top or jacket with a solid pant or skirt, but let's reverse that mindset and snazz up the bottom half.

Classy or bold, kooky or conservative, it's up to you! Pattern-on-pattern can be fun, too.

Grab a friend and dig through your closet (and your friend's closet, too!). Maybe you can even trade some clothes for the season! A change in seasons (and fash ion) doesn't have to break the bank be resourceful. Why not organize a cocktail (or mocktail) party where everyone brings an article or two of clothing they've stopped wearing and do a little switch-a-roo!

Hit a thrift shop with a friend. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon. There are so many treasures just waiting for you and it's budget friendly!

And layers! Layers let you sail through your day as you add layers or peel them off, depending upon the tempera ture fluctuations. You'll be ready for anything!

(AGAIN...JUST DON'T GET TOO CARRIED AWAY, BUDDY-OVER-THERE-WITH-THE-SCARVES...)

WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, BE WARM, BE COMFY BUT MOST OF ALL...BE YOURSELF AND HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT!

celebrating 50 years of keeping The Triad "on their feet"

September 2022 marked 50 years of Triad Foot & Ankle Center keeping Alamance County and surrounding Triad com munities “on their feet” with personalized, expert care trusted by generations of patients.

It all started in 1972 when Triad Foot & Ankle Center’s found ing physician, Dr. Richard Tuchman opened the first location in Greensboro, known then as Tuchman Podiatry, as a single provider office. After opening his Greensboro location, it was evident that specialized foot care was needed in Alamance County, leading Dr. Tuchman to open its first Alamace location in the CumPart Plaza in Burlington.

In 1987, Dr. Norman Regal, DPM, FACFAS, joined the practice and the name changed to Tuchman & Regal Podiatry. They served Greensboro, Burlington and the surrounding commu nities. Once Dr. Richard Sikora, DPM joined the practice in 1991 and welcomed Dr. Jeffrey Petrinitz, DPM in 1995, the name was changed once again to Triad Foot Center, PA.

Burlington’s Dr. Todd M. Hyatt, DPM, FACFAS was welcomed to the team in 2000, and Dr. Kathyrn Egerton, DPM joined them in 2010. Since then, the demand for high-quality podiatric care in the Triad exploded and the practice grew rapidly adding nine more physicians: Dr. Matthew Wagoner, DPM, FACFAS (’15),

Dr. Titorya Stover, DPM, AACFAS (’16), Dr. Gregory Mayer, DPM (’16) Dr. Brent Evans, DPM, FACFAS (’17), Dr. Michael Price, DPM, AACFAS, FACPM (’18), Dr. Jennifer Galaway, DPM (’19), Dr. Kevin Patel, DPM, FACFAS (’20), Dr. Adam McDonald, DPM, AACFAS (‘21), and Dr. Rebecca Sikora, DPM, AACFAS (’22). Overall, Triad Foot & Ankle Center has grown to a total of four offices, including Asheboro, Kernersville, Greensboro, and Burlington.

In 2018, the practice’s name was changed to its current name to more accurately reflect all the services offered, which now includes seven highly skilled physicians and board-certified sur geons from some of America’s leading hospitals and universities. Today, Triad Foot & Ankle Center’s Burlington office has five ded icated physicians in the office at 1680 Westbook Avenue. Their physicians include Drs. M. Todd Hyatt, Brent Evans, Kevin Patel, Adam McDonald, and Gregory Mayer.

“We’re proud to have provided expert foot and ankle care across the Triad for the last 50 years,” said Dr. M. Todd Hyatt. “Our core mission of providing comprehensive and exceptional patient care, using the latest technology, training, and tech niques available, has enabled us to help generations of families who have trusted us with their foot and ankle care. It is import ant to use to continue that same level of care for the next 50 years and beyond.”

10 Reasons You Should See a Podiatrist

Foot problems are something that should never be ignored and affect everyone from athletes to inactive people—even children! The way you walk, run or even stand can be associated with foot problems.

REASONS YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A PODIATRIST:

1. Chronic back and/or knee pain. This could be a sign of an underlying problem in the ankle or foot.

2. Bunions, corns, heel spurs, warts, or neuromas. Podiatrists specialize in the treatment and removal of growths on the foot.

3. Ingrown or discolored toenails. Ingrown nails are painful and can quickly become infected, while disclored nails can indicate a fungal infection.

4. Arthritis in the foot or ankle. Some medications and orthotics can help with arthritic pain.

5. Flat feet. Custom orthotics can prevent and alleviate pain from conditions caused by flat feet.

6. Skin irritations such as Athlete’s Foot, scaly skin, and/or inflammation.

7. Broken bones in the foot. Podiatrists can ensure that bones are set to heal correctly, preventing future problems.

8. Chronic heel pain or arch pain. An array of treatment options are available for people suffering from foot pain.

9. Numbness, burning or tingling in your feet. These symptoms may indicate a neuroma or circulation problem.

10. Unusual gait. This can cause back or postural problems that can be prevented with custom orthotics.

Are you at risk for falls?

BALANCE TRAINING FOR OLDER ADULTS

As we age, many of our functions begin to slow down. Our eyesight begins to diminish, our movement and reflexes aren’t so fast, our strength declines and our balance is off.

All of this leads to a decrease in our confidence and abilities to do things the way we used to. Understandably, some of this can’t be helped, BUT many of these things CAN be helped or even reversed.

If you have balance issues, you may be at risk for falling.

FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

• About 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths and over 50 million spent on non fatal injuries

• Each year, about 3 million older adults are treated in emergen cy departments for a fall injury

• One out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury

• Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures

Check for Safety A Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults 2017 Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Contact your local community or senior center for information on exercise, fall prevention programs, or options for improving home safety. For additional information on fall prevention, visit go.usa.gov/xN9XA

Don’t become a statistic. There are several things you can do to prevent falls and build your balance. For more information that can help you evaluate your home for hazards, follow the link below:

cdc.gov/steadi/pdf/STEADI-Brochure-CheckForSafety-508.pdf

In addition to keeping your environment free from hazards, you can work to build your strength, balance and confidence through a structured program customized to suit your needs.

FIRST, YOU NEED TO BE EVALUATED. Checking to see if you are a low, medium or high risk for falls and evaluating your balance and strength are very important. Finding the root cause of your balance problems is key to treatment and outcomes.

ONCE THE SEVERITY AND NEED FOR INTERVENTION IS DETERMINED, and your weaknesses isolated, a plan can be developed around those areas that need attention. Focusing on improving daily function contributes to better health. It’s a fact that the more sedentary you become, the faster your health declines. Nobody wants that, so we must do everything we can to stay mobile.

Some underlying factors of balance problems may be medi cations you take, vision problems, inner ear problems, blood pressure issues and/or neuropathy. If any of these are discov ered, referral to the appropriate physician will be a benefit.

Regardless of the problem, improving your situation any way you can is key to your future and success.

NEXT, YOU'LL NEED TO BEGIN A PROGRAM. Once you decide to begin a program, a deeper dive into where you spe cifically need work will occur. You may be stronger on one side over the other, so specific exercises will need to be done to bring the weak area up to speed. Maybe your balance is better in certain positions; if so, you'll need to work on the areas that need the most help. Maybe you are afraid you'll fall and won’t know how to get up. Envision Wellness will give you real-time practice by physically putting you in those positions and teaching you how to successfully navigate those situations improving your confidence. Confidence plays a big part in balance and in your desire to be active and remain mobile, so we need to work at things you are weak at to build strength and confidence. Agility exercises also play a big role as you improve your weak areas.

It is best to start fighting these issues as early in life as possi ble. Even starting in your 40s and 50s is not too early (or too late!).

Prevention is the key to longevity.
