#1 MAINTENANCE-FREE SIDING

The latest home renovation trends are all about energy efficiency, low maintenance exteriors and making the best uses of space.

Murphy beds pull down from an armoire-looking wall unit and can transform any room into a guest room. Prices vary. Search online for sellers.

#4 GETTING CLEVER WITH HOME OFFICE SPACE COVID-19 did a number on us all, but home offices have always been a thing they're just a bigger thing now. Flexible work schedules, mobile communications, and entrepreneurial zest are relocating us from the office downtown to our home.

SHANNON MUNCY Garage Door shannon@precisionvirginia.comConsultant

Fiber-cement siding is more expensive than paint-grade wood, vi nyl, and aluminum siding. Still, it's a solid investment. If you should decide to sell your house, you'll recover 83% of the project cost, according to the "Remodeling Impact Report" from the National Association of REALTORS®.

WORTH THE EFFORT & THE MONEY

Maintenance is limited to a cleaning and some caulking each spring. Repaint every 7 - 15 years. Wood requires repainting every 4 - 7 years.

Foldaway walls turn a private study into an easy-flow party space. Walls can consist of fancy, glass panels ($600 to $1,600 per linear ft., depending on the system); or they can be simple vinyl-covered accordions ($1,230 for 7 ft. by 10 ft.). Walls on wheels are also a thing! ($775 for approximately 7 ft. by 7 ft.).

We’re binging on electronics: cell phones, iPads, laptops then going to extremes with other energy-suckers by installing LED fixtures and turning the thermostat to 68 degrees.

New tracking devices can gauge electricity usage of individual elec tronics ($20 to $30) or monitor whole house energy ($100 to $250). The TED 5000 Energy Monitor ($240) supplies real-time feedback that you can view remotely and graph by the second, minute, hour, day and month.

Trends show that we no longer want bigger we want better, more flexible, more efficient space. We're keeping closer tabs on our energy meters and leaning toward more maintenance-free exteriors.

Garage doors should be seen and not heard!

Fancy rooms that are only used once or twice a year are becoming a thing of the past museum rooms, as they're called.

60% of the air you breathe up here

Once unnoticed nooks that displayed antique desks are blos soming into built-ins for books and collections. Add some doors, and you can hide office supplies and bins of loose pieces of kids' building blocks and toys.

Storage is more than just baskets that give the illusion that we're more organized; we're reimagining and discovering that we can add built-in storage in unlikely spaces — under stairs, over doors, beneath floors.

Why not turn that mudroom into a laundry room big enough to get the job done, include more storage, add hanging space for hand-washables or items you don't want in the dryer at all! No more cramming extra bulk detergent, house supplies and whoknows-what into your utility sink (which, by the way seems to always have a laundry basket sitting over the top of it and can't be used as a sink anyway!).

Laptops and wireless connections make it possible for us to telecommute from anywhere in the house, but we still want/need a dedicated space (preferably with a door) for paperwork, supplies, printers, etc.

#5 BIGGER, MORE FUNCTIONAL LAUNDRY ROOMS

Take a walk around your home and see if one or more of these tips can help you reimagine a space; clean up a little (or a lot!) of clutter; make your home more energy-efficient or more useful.

#6 STORAGE! CAN WE EVER HAVE ENOUGH STORAGE?

Turn your laundry room from a place you dread to tread...to a thing of beauty that helps you keep your family in clean clothes.

Oversized and high-priced commercial appliances did we ever fire up six burners at once? are yielding to family-sized, midrange models that help convert at least one cabinet for storage.

Now that we're paring down and living smarter, storage is king!

Kitchen remodels are trending toward opening the space more, perhaps even incorporating dining rooms that usually sit aban doned most of the time, and adding recycling centers, larger pantries, and even electronics recharging stations.

Oversized master suites are being reinvented and even divided up to increase the size of a walk-in closet or add more built-in storage.

“Think globally, act locally” is a motto that everyone should take to heart. It emphasizes the importance of real actions you can take at home and in your community, while stressing the fact that every creature on planet Earth is connected. With that in mind, here are three great ways to save the planet in your very own backyard this fall:

3 GO LOW MAINTENANCE: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans consume nearly 3 trillion gallons of water, 200 million gal lons of gas, and 70 million pounds of pesticides on their lawns each year. You can reduce your contribution to the problem by swapping out your conven tional lawn for a meadow (which is comprised of native plants already adapted to thrive in your region), xeriscaping (a drought-resistant option requiring no mowing and little to no irrigation) or by simply letting your grass grow wild and free. Talk to your neighbors about your decision and encourage them to do the

2 START A COMPOST BIN: Composting food scraps and yard waste is one action you can take with multiple benefits. It’s not just an excellent way to reduce the amount of trash you send to the landfill, your finished compost can be added to your lawn and garden to help plants thrive without chemical fertilizers. While it sounds simple since time does most of the work, there are some important composting do’s and don’ts to consider. Be sure to read up on best practices before you get started so that you only toss compostable items into the mix, and so you strike the right balance between nitrogen and carbon. This will speed up the process and yield higher-quality compost.

1SAVE THE LIVES OF BIRDS: Bird populations are in decline due to a range of threats, including habitat loss and climate change. In fact, North America has lost more than one in four birds in the last 50 years, according to the Audubon Society. Amid this alarming trend, you can make the skies safer for birds by mitigating the chance of window strikes, one of the more common threats birds face. In the United States each year, 350 million or more wild birds are killed when striking windows. Research shows that applying decals that reflect ultraviolent sunlight to your home’s windows can substantially reduce the likeli hood of this occurring. Check out the bird decals from WindowAlert, which fea ture patterns that give the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds. The brand also makes WindowAlert UV Liquid, a high-tech liquid that offers even greater protection when applied between decals. Remember, wild birds migrate in fall, making it an especially important season to take this step. From hummingbirds to eagles, learn more about the beautiful birds you love and how to protect them by visiting WindowAlert.com.

As you embrace the rituals that matter most to you, remember that traditions don’t need to be rigid or set in stone.

NO COMMITMENT

TRADITIONS STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES: Traditions are not just for families; they can also strengthen ties among friends and communities. Consider getting a group of neighbors to gether for morning walks or meeting friends for shopping excursions. Make visiting the farmers market, attending free concerts in the park, playing community center bingo and gathering for other recurring local events part of your routine.

TRADITIONS HELP US STAY HEALTHY & HAPPY 650-2500

2 TRADITIONS PASS ON FAMILY VALUES: Having shared values can help us feel connected to one another. Telling stories from the past or practicing cultural, spiritual and religious tradi tions are great ways to pass these values down from one generation to the next.

3 TRADITIONS CAN MAKE US FEEL YOUNG AGAIN: From cooking and gardening to sports and games, family traditions often evoke old memories and make us feel young again. Sensory memories can be particularly powerful. Whether it’s a cookie bakeoff, ballpark peanuts and hot dogs, or a singalong around the piano, family rituals that include special sights, sounds and aromas are often the ones we think of most fondly.

Medicare explained in clear terms to help you understand ALL coverage available to help meet your unique healthcare needs

“As children become adults and move out of the house or away, the family traditions that bind us can sometimes get lost in the process,” says Aparna Abburi, president of Medicare and Car eAllies with Cigna, which provides insurance to hundreds of thousands of older adults through its Medicare plans. “Forming new traditions or reigniting old ones can keep us connected to loved ones, ultimately helping us feel more fulfilled, happier and healthier.”

1TRADITIONS HELP COMBAT LONELINESS: According to a 2020 survey by Cigna, 61% of adults reported being lonely – a 7 percentage-point increase from 2018. That feeling was likely exacerbated by the pandemic that followed. Traditions can help to combat feelings of isolation. Consider setting up weekly video calls or trading letters and notes with relatives who live far away. Regular trips to a favorite destination, such as a lake or beach, or celebrating important holidays together every year, can provide meaningful time together.

Health experts say that establishing and maintaining family traditions can boost overall well-be ing and vitality, especially as we age.

“Just as you might modify a family recipe to suit your dietary needs or switch from weekly phone calls to weekly video calls, don’t be afraid to tweak and expand on older traditions so they’re relevant and interesting today – and for years to come,” says Abburi. 4

Surely, you have noticed the occurrence when you search for something online, or simply mention something in the presence of your phone; then, get followed by ads by a company related to your keystroke or private conversation. Big brother is watching (and listening), there is no doubt about that. In those circumstances, "Big Brother' is simply a company accessing your digital profile through a third party (that you've somehow granted access) to 'deliver' you a targeted ad for something you have shown interest in purchasing. Is this something that you are o.k. with? Do you tend to follow the rabbit down its' marketing hole and buy something, or do you think it is creepy and dismiss the marketing attempts by said, 'Big Brother?'

(757) 932-3549

Stretching is always important for your spine's health, but especially so if the summer vacation was a little less active than usual. Although kids are generally more flexible than adults, be sure your child does some stretches. Before engaging in any strenuous activity, your child should warm up and stretch 10 to 15 minutes and include a cool down after a workout. This will help prevent injury to muscles that might not have been used in some time.

BACK TO SCHOOL a pain

Your child has been begging for the cool est new backpack, but what looks trendy today can lead to back issues later. Look for a backpack with ergonomic straps that are wide and padded. Be sure it is made of durable material, and try to find one with additional padding on the lower back area.

Back to school also means a lot of time back in a seat. Some teachers are opposed to children leaving their seats, so some seated stretches are great tools to teach your child. Teach them about proper posture while seated, which means books/tablets held at eye level, feet flat on the floor, and their back up against the back of their seat. With proper posture, your child will greatly reduce their chance of suffering from back, neck and shoulder pain.

Hazy backlight can feel dreamy and nostalgic. Pockets of light can feel dramatic and theatrical. The key is to use the light with intention and combine it with all the other variables of the frame. When you harness Golden Hour in that way, you will create images that are not only beautiful, but powerful. This time of day is also more comfortable for the client; less heat, less sweating, less bystanders (as most enjoying the outdoors have headed home).

Golden hour is when the sun is on the horizon moments after sunrise and again moments before sunset; it washes everything in a warm, soft, and delightful light. We photographers call this wash of amazing soft sunlight the “Golden Hour”. It is the most coveted time of the day for portraits and why we insist on starting sessions as the evening approaches. Planning a photoshoot for sunset will flood your photo with warm, natural light, whether it be a landscape, a close-up, or a family shot. For portraits, Golden Hour magically erases blemishes. The soft, diffused light blurs imperfections and can even add the perfect touch of a glow ing tan. Used as dreamy backlight, Golden Hour sun can evoke nostalgia, happiness, and a sense of youth. Golden Hour light is a powerful way to tap into emotion. The warmth of the sun trans lates to the emotional warmth of a moment.

Time after time during my consultations, my clients are shocked to learn that their session will be much later in the day than they expected. Often, I have been asked “why”. The short answer is for “Golden Hour”. So, what is Golden Hour and why are photographers so adamant about it?

Wherever you store your Halloween candy, it is best that it is out of reach of dogs, but if they do get into it in an amount that can cause serious prob lems, calling poison control or your vet is recommended. With proper dosing and guidance from a profes sional, hydrogen peroxide can be used to induce vomiting, and if you don't have that on hand a vet visit is always a good precaution when your pet's safety is concerned.

It is the theobromine in chocolate that is dangerous and possibly lethal to dogs. The darker the chocolate the higher the concentration. There is some debate over whether or not white chocolate is safe for dogs, as it includes little to no theobromine, but it is best to avoid it out of caution but who gives out white chocolate for

HALLOWEEN CANDY

Most of the chocolate in Halloween candy is going to be milk choco late. There is a sliding scale, based on weight, as to how dangerous it is to dogs. We will just say that if a 100-pound Lab happens to get one small, bite-sized Snickers™ bar it is not good, but not worth a trip to the vet and inducing vomiting, for this could cause more harm than the chocolate. It is best to let the liver and kidneys take care of it in the case of the 100-pound Lab. On the other hand, if a 10-pound Yorkie were to ingest the same amount of chocolate, you're going to want to get them to the vet. For a more in-depth discus sion of this, please sign up for one of our Pet CPR and First Aid Classes. With all of this in mind, the best place to store your Halloween candy is in

With the trunk or treats and the main event trick or treating approaching, it will soon be time for the diges tion of the candy. Whether you are taste-testing your kid's candy or will have some left over from your own handing out, it is important to keep chocolate and other candy ingredi ents out of the reach of dogs.

Your pup may want to join in on the Halloween fun, but chocolate and pups don't mix

Local Artists & Businesses GIVE BACK THROUGH 10-DAY MURAL FESTIVAL

The ViBe District of Virginia Beach, known for its quaint shops, beachy atmosphere and pedestrian-friendly streets, enjoyed some colorful art additions this August. Ten different artists, each work ing with locally owned businesses, were commissioned to paint murals within ten days. Using only their equipment and artistic vision, each painter contributed a unique piece of public art to our community. Walls that were previously plain and commonplace have come alive with color and creativity that property owners have promised will be preserved for at least two years, according to the ViBe Creative District’s website.

Tessa Duquette is a Virginia Beach artist who painted her first mural in the festival. The shells she painted on a wall near 17th Street Marketplace on Virginia Beach Boulevard were ones she collected on the shore of Croatan Beach with her young sons. While painting, Tessa was offered three additional mural commissions.

Thruogh interviewing some of the artists, we were able to learn how meaningful each artwork was to the artists and the businesses they partnered with.

She noted that “esoteric” refers to the idea that only a few have knowledge, which is connected to the upscale restaurant’s goal to be an unusual and delicious indestinationthearea. who painted at Ambassador Inn & Suites, in partner ship with Virginia African American Cultural Center, painted three African-American women standing confidently, framed against a deep blue sky full of spar kling stars. Each woman is holding an item of signif icance, including a lamp, architect tools and books. Some of her favorite local shops include Three Ships Coffee and The Pink Dingy.

Featured teen artist Leani Thurton painted her first wall mural at Organic Beginnings Montessori School where Summer Paradiso, a former Virginia Beach City Public Schools art teacher, painted on the opposite side of the building. Both women painted murals inspired by the environment. Leani’s depicted larger-than-life flowers and Summer’s mural was in partnership with the Lynnhaven River, featuring animals found in our local eco system.
