You also need to be mindful of how the backpack is packed, and how your child wears it. Both shoulder straps should be worn, and the backpack should be snug against your child's back so there is minimal movement and impact on the lower back while walking. The backpack shouldn't go much lower than your child's

Your child has been begging for the cool est new backpack, but what looks trendy today can lead to back issues later. Look for a backpack with ergonomic straps that are wide and padded. Be sure it is made of durable material, and try to find one with additional padding on the lower back area.

Be sure the straps are adjusted properly so weight is evenly distributed. Lastly, the weight of the backpack should not exceed 10 to 15% of your child's body weight. Backpacks that exceed this weight can cause your child to be pulled backwards and compensate by bending at the waist and/or shrugging the shoulders.

Back to school also means a lot of time back in a seat. Some teachers are opposed to children leaving their seats, so some seated stretches are great tools to teach your child. Teach them about proper posture while seated, which means books/tablets held at eye level, feet flat on the floor, and their back up against the back of their seat. With proper posture, your child will greatly reduce their chance of suffering from back, neck and shoulder pain.

DOESN'T HAVE TO BE

Stretching is always important for your spine's health, but especially so if the summer vacation was a little less active than usual. Although kids are generally more flexible than adults, be sure your child does some stretches. Before engaging in any strenuous activity, your child should warm up and stretch 10 to 15 minutes and include a cool down after a workout. This will help prevent injury to muscles that might not have been used in some time.

It is best to let the liver and kidneys take care of it in the case of the 100-pound Lab. On the other hand, if a 10-pound Yorkie were to ingest the same amount of chocolate, you're going to want to get them to the vet. There are dangers other than choc olates, and we go over all ingested poisons in our Pet CPR and First Aid classes, but most of the Halloween candy, or at least the good kinds, have chocolate.

With proper dosing and guidance from a profes sional, hydrogen peroxide can be used to induce vomiting, and if you don't have that on hand a vet visit is always a good precaution when your pet's safety is concerned.

This has the highest concentration and is typically 95% dark. From there, the next most lethal is baker's choc olate or the semi-dark. Though it is unlikely that anyone would give those out on Halloween, if you have them in your home keep them on a top shelf in the pantry.

Local Artists & Businesses GIVE BACK THROUGH 10-DAY MURAL FESTIVAL

who partnered with Esoteric, painted an abstract piece of soft colors that arch toward the sky.

The ViBe District of Virginia Beach, known for its quaint shops, beachy atmosphere and pedestrian-friendly streets, enjoyed some colorful art additions this August. Ten different artists, each work ing with locally owned businesses, were commissioned to paint murals within ten days. Using only their equipment and artistic vision, each painter contributed a unique piece of public art to our community. Walls that were previously plain and commonplace have come alive with color and creativity that property owners have promised will be preserved for at least two years, according to the ViBe Creative District’s website.

Thruogh interviewing some of the artists, we were able to learn how meaningful each artwork was to the artists and the businesses they partnered with.

She noted that “esoteric” refers to the idea that only a few have knowledge, which is connected to the upscale restaurant’s goal to be an unusual and delicious indestinationthearea. who painted at Ambassador Inn & Suites, in partner ship with Virginia African American Cultural Center, painted three African-American women standing confidently, framed against a deep blue sky full of spar kling stars. Each woman is holding an item of signif icance, including a lamp, architect tools and books. Some of her favorite local shops include Three Ships Coffee and The Pink Dingy.

Kate Pittman is a nonprofit arts executive with over 16 years experience working in Hampton Roads. In her role as director for the first arts district in Virginia Beach, she works with a nonprofit board of community leaders, city officials, a business association of approximately 100 small local businesses and over 200 artists to champion local culture. Pittman partners with artists and entrepreneurs to collaborate in the unique and engaging destination called ViBe. The ViBe District has rapidly grown since its 2015 adoption by city council with the addition of over 50 new small businesses and over 350 works of art. The ViBe Creative District has raised over $1 Million dollars to support local artists and small businesses and has received 750 positive press articles including Jeopardy, Rolling Stone Magazine and Southern Living. Pittman lives with her husband and sons in Virginia Beach.

We spoke with Rite Aid’s CEO Heyward Donigan, a Virginia Beach resident, who explained how this is a way for her compa ny to give back. “Community means a lot to us, and we want to be a vibrant part of a vibrant community.”

Tessa Duquette is a Virginia Beach artist who painted her first mural in the festival. The shells she painted on a wall near 17th Street Marketplace on Virginia Beach Boulevard were ones she collected on the shore of Croatan Beach with her young sons. While painting, Tessa was offered three additional mural commissions.

is a Philadelphia based artist. Santoleri brought sketches created all around the world from prior US Embassy spon sored cultural exchange projects for his mural on the back of North End Bag Co. that includes many painted abstract drawings and a detailed dragonfly.

who created a piece for Rite Aid, painted a wide flowing piece with colors of blue, green and yellow framing a peaceful woman’s face. He was honored and pleased to be chosen for this mural, meant to celebrate self-care and re flect Rite Aid’s stated goal to make women feel comfortable in their own skin. Asked where art ists find inspiration for their creativity, Sam said everyone loves to create when they’re young and that there is an artist in all of us.

Featured teen artist Leani Thurton painted her first wall mural at Organic Beginnings Montessori School where Summer Paradiso, a former Virginia Beach City Public Schools art teacher, painted on the opposite side of the building. Both women painted murals inspired by the environment. Leani’s depicted larger-than-life flowers and Summer’s mural was in partnership with the Lynnhaven River, featuring animals found in our local eco system.

painted a double stack of shipping containers situated on the future home Atlantic Park surf park on the corner of 19th Street and Arctic Avenue. Hanna’s artwork featured boldly colored people enjoying a Virginia Beach scene with the words, “Together we will do so much.”

BOARDWALK ART SHOW 2022

Now in its 66th year, the Virginia MOCA Boardwalk Art Show is one of the only outdoor art shows produced by an accredited museum and strives to have the highest caliber fine art in the relaxing setting of the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Ranked as a top 15 Fine Art Show of the Decade by Sunshine Artist maga zine, this three-day festival welcomes nearly 200 artists from around the country, featuring fine art across several mediums.

DONNA DONLIN works in oils; enjoys creating figures, beach scenes, animals and still life.

CAROL JOANNETTE loves telling a story through art. Her Sparrow Series does so in acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, pen & ink versions.

BETH ANN SCOTT works mainly in acrylic and paint pen using bright colors, sharp lines and patterns to create images that pop from the canvas.

SANDI SNIDER is an art photographer who loves capturing the perfect “moment in time."

JEAN HEARST is a New Orleans native who loves capturing the light with plein air paintings in soft pastels or oil, as well as drawing the face and figure in expressive ways.

SHIRLEY LU finds inspiration in water. Droplets, ripples & waves that dance, glisten & mesmerize, rendered in oil, pastel & other media.

SHIRLEY HURD ANDERSON is an artist adept in watercolor, acrylics and oils, ranging from still life to abstract subject matter.

VINNIE BUMATAY is an acrylic painter. See his art featured on page 13.

PAIL FRANCOIS His "industrial surrealism" is exe cuted in acrylics, pen & pencil, and sometimes printed photographs.

MAGGIE KERRIGAN is a book artist. See her art featured on page 14.

ELIZABETH WAITEKUS paints in oils, as well as acrylics, and is best known for her paintings of angels and symbolic realms of the spiritual.

PAM GRAY is a ceramicist whose cups and plates often feature elements of animal imagery.

JANET OGREN has pursued a passion to record the beauty of nature and wild animals to far corners of the world.

MIKE DENNIS is a wood turner who transforms old, diseased or insect-riddled wood into beautiful vases or bowls.

DEBORAH ORRICK is a bead weaver, creating beautifully-crafted jewelry out of glass beads and Swarovski crystals.

NANCY BAZIN is the author of “Why I Love to Paint Birds." Her whimsical art also includes abstract patterns in bright colors.

SUSAN CHECK creates oil paintings centered on river scenes, after an award-winning career as a watercolorist.

DON MALPASS paints cosmic images. He also builds models, some used in the movie Star Trek: Renegades.

CAROLYN MAIN finds her psychiatric background useful as she paints watercolors, ranging from people and places to the abstract.

RICH GRAY is a paper artist who was inspired by origami and his time stationed in Japan.

CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS creates wonderfully textured watercolor and multi-media paintings that border on abstraction, but always include recognizable subject matter.

MICHELE BARNES is fascinated by botany and the art of encaustics is a large part of her artmaking, as well as printmaking and calligraphy.

RICK RICKETTS combines photography and painting on his digital canvas. His art of local icons, imaginary ocean scenes and sea life is ever-evolving. His mantra is “Everything is art.”

DICK RAWLS paints prolifically in oils, with subjects drawn from natural scenes, jazz musicians, travel and the old masters. From cars to cornfields, he’ll paint it.

AMY RATLIFF is a watercolorist who paints in both oils and acrylics, finding inspiration in the local environ ment, her travels and the human figure.

LYNNE SWARD is a celebrated fiber artist whose highly patterned and brightly colored creations always include joy as a main ingredient.
