MAR/APR 2023 | VOL IIII Mom HOW MADE IT! MAKING WINE W h W h l s r W h l s !W h s CHEESY WHO' S THAT TAX TIPS with TASCA 12 pg Mom 14 pg 4 5 pg
In this edition of MomsTown, we are marching into spring with a bounty of inspiration. We understand the balancing act that all moms face on a daily basis. Whether it’s your mom life, personal life or professional life ~ quality of life is always important. This month we feature an array of moms, following their passions and using their education and talents to create the lives they crave.
To get started, our cover story, featuring winemaker, Olivia Bue, is a mom working every day to create something amazing, and she’s doing it with taste. Olivia grew up in Encinitas and went to La Costa Canyon High School where, as a senior, she discovered a professional path that would take her around the world. Olivia’s story is on pages 12 and 13.
Following Olivia’s story, we figured you can’t have wine without cheese. That leads us to That Cheesy Mom. Patrice Thompson, with her culinary creativity, has curated a profitable side-hustle by making boards and grazers. To learn more about Patrice, dig right in, her story is on page 14.
We have more tasty stories and some of the best advice for every mom pursuing her dream. Chef Adriana, The Paella Lady, shares her story of how she became a chef. What we love about Adriana’s story is the surprise ingredient; it’s the ingredient we all need to live a full life. Discover the ingredient on page 16.
No menu (or table of contents) is complete without something sweet. Dipped Confections owner, Julie Iversen, started a home-based cookie business and, as we learn, she’s having a “pinch me moment.” Find out what the sugar rush is all about on page 17.
We are also inspired by a mom who is following her passion with numbers. Tasca Russo is a local mom and CPA. Her story on page four shows us that finance is fun, teachers have the power to influence us in positive ways, and as a bonus, Tasca shares with us a few tax tips to get us through this season.
Speaking of teachers, local mom, Kristen Donegan, tells us why she decided to step out of the classroom to support teachers in classrooms around the world. Kristen has tips for both teachers and parents on page eight. And that’s not all! This edition of MomsTown has style tips for your closet and your home. Travel tips for 2023 and how to avoid travel scams (especially important as we head into the busy travel months of spring and summer).
Finally, we want to thank our sponsors! Thank you to Ilana Huff and The Huff Team for their generous support over the past several editions. It’s the support of our sponsors that makes it possible to share local stories and curate the content that informs and inspires us all. We also would like to thank KOTA Energy for their continued support, and helping to power MomsTown

TAX TIPS w/Tasca
Spring is in the air and we all know what that means: W2s, W4s, 1020s, 1098s, 1099s and 1095s! Welcome to tax season! To help us out with a few tax tips and strategies we turned to local mom, Tasca Russo, CPA.
TASCA MOVED FROM ATLANTA, GA TO SAN ELIJO HILLS 11 YEARS AGO AFTER HER HUSBAND ACCEPTED A JOB OFFER. SHE LANDED A POSITION AS A GLOBAL TAX DIRECTOR AT A LOCAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY. WHEN MERCK BOUGHT THAT COMPANY SHE DECIDED, BACK IN 2014, THAT IT WAS THE PERFECT TIME TO START HER OWN TAX PRACTICE.
We had an opportunity to ask Tasca a few questions about her background and what tips she has for the current tax season.
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started in the accounting field?
TASCA: Interesting story. I was actually going to an Engineering School (Georgia Tech), but part of my core classes required me to take an entry level accounting class. My accounting professor pulled me aside and told me she thought that, with my understanding of accounting and strength in math, I would be a great CPA. I took a tax class and was hooked! To round out my education, I went on to Grad school for a Masters in Taxation. I’ve now been practicing for 27 years and love what I do.
MOMSTOWN: What is it about being a CPA that brings you the greatest joy?
TASCA: At my core, I have found that I get enjoyment out of teaching people financial and tax principles and seeing them implemented. There is an intrinsic reward seeing clients feel empowered and in control of their financial situation. Saving clients money is also a bonus!
MOMSTOWN: What is the most difficult part of your work?
TASCA: The way our tax deadlines are structured is challenging. Historically, the IRS is late to enact legislation and, post COVID, they are way understaffed and terrible about giving clear guidelines. The other challenge is combating some bad “TikTok tax advice” or “I
heard on the internet that you can deduct...” We all know that not everything we read online is correct.
MOMSTOWN: What tips do you have for us this tax season?
1. ROTH IRAs: if you’re eligible, take advantage of contributing to these now and enjoy tax-free growth and tax-free distribution in retirement. Your future self will thank you. It’s never too early to start. Consult your financial planner if you have one.
2. STORM RELIEF: Due to the CA storms, the IRS and CA have special relief that has extended the tax deadlines to May 15, 2023 for some CA taxpayers for 2022: irs.gov/ newsroom/irs-california-storm-victims-qualifyfor-tax-relief-april-18-deadline-other-datesextended-to-may-15
3. ELECTRIC VEHICLE CREDIT: If you are considering purchasing an EV this year, be very careful to read the rules. There are income limitations as well as Vehicle Price limitations that may preclude you from being eligible. In addition, the EV must meet critical material and battery components manufacturing requirements meaning a % of production must be performed in the US. Here is a handy website to look up to confirm if your EV will pass the assembly test: afdc. energy.gov/laws/inflation-reduction-act
4. REAL ESTATE: Given the recent increase in real estate values, many people have decided to sell their house, but taxes are usually one of the later things that come to mind. You should consult a tax advisor to calculate if you could have a taxable gain from the house sale.
5. FILING EXTENSIONS: Just to clear the myth there is no increased audit risk solely because of filing an extension. The extension allows more time to file, but not to pay, so make sure you send in payments if you think you’ll owe when you file.
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help us with our finances in 2023?
TASCA: If you end up owing when you file your 2022 tax return, consider increasing your withholding by filing a new W-4 with your employer. If you aren’t maxing out your regular 401k contributions, every dollar that you contribute reduces your taxable income and saves on taxes.

TIPS to help both Teachers & Parents
Kids, parents and teachers all need two things: love and support! Truth is, we all want what’s best for our children and that means coming together as a team to show them the adults in their lives are behind them, cheering them on and wanting them to flourish.
Former classroom teacher and local mom, Kristen Donegan, has made it her life’s work to support teachers, therein, supporting students. She started a company called Easy Teaching Tools to help teachers in the classroom.
We recently asked Kristen what she wants both teachers and parents to know:
MOMSTOWN: Share with us a bit about you.
KRISTEN: Hey there! I’m Kristen Donegan, former K-2 teacher of 13 years and busy mom to Liv (4 years old) and Kai (16 months). I grew up and taught in Orange County and was lucky enough to spend my last few years in the classroom teaching in San Elijo Hills. I took a break from the classroom to be a mom and running my company Easy Teaching Tools, full-time.
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started with Easy Teaching Tools?
KRISTEN: While I was going to school for my Masters, I was also teaching classes to other teachers in my district and wanted to find a way to monetize the resources and thesis I was creating. It started as a hobby on my tiny little netbook that has evolved into a real company supporting teachers all over the world with time-saving organization resources and professional development to save them time.
MOMSTOWN: What is it about supporting teachers that brings you the most joy?
KRISTEN: My team and I love being able to help teachers solve everyday problems. So many teachers are exhausted, underappreciated, and undervalued. They are given so much to do that it’s nearly impossible to get everything done without it impacting their time with their families. I feel so inspired when I hear teachers say that our online program, Easy Organization Tools, has saved their marriage, given them more time to be present with their own kids, and has allowed them to have hobbies again. I love being able to show teachers that it’s entirely possible to be a great teacher without continuing to sacrifice all of their time.
MOMSTOWN: What has been the greatest struggle you’ve seen in the past year or so that teachers are having to cope with?
KRISTEN: Sadly, so many amazing teachers are leaving the profession because the ever-changing demands are unrealistic and hard to keep up with. I know that teachers' ways of relating to work have changed after the pandemic. So many teachers feel disillusioned, taken advantage of, and easily replaced. From the comments on social media and outright lies from politicians, teachers have simply had enough, and I don't blame them. They love teaching but also want it to be sustainable so they can do the best for their students AND their own families
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have for parents? What do parents need to know about the lives of teachers?
KRISTEN:Teachers really need you and want to work with you to support your child. My best advice for parents is to remember that teachers aren’t superheroes, they’re human. They’ve been given an impossible task with limited resources and funding. They have feelings and families, too. Since teachers have such big hearts, they’re often working well past contract hours at nights, on weekends, and during unpaid breaks. Sending a friendly note or email goes a long way!
MOMSTOWN: How can parents support their child’s education at home/after school?
KRISTEN: Support what’s going on in the classroom by reading your child’s teacher newsletter so you know about important learning taking place, encourage your child to read every day, and do what you can to ensure that your child is respectful at school. So many of our students have really big feelings so modeling coping strategies at home is the biggest thing you can do to support education from home. While it is often an expected behavior to know how to handle big emotions, it is not a skill we are born with. This is why coping strategies need to be explicitly taught and practiced on a regular basis at home. Kids can be successful at school and at home when they have strong coping strategies in place.

Karla is coiffing and creating it all at KASA!
KARLA VAZQUEZ
Karla Vazquez is the owner of not one, but two, local salons. We recently caught up with this busy mom and second-generation stylist to learn more about her success and what she recommends for a good hair day.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Karla Vazquez!
KARLA: Hi, my name is Karla and three years ago I moved back to California and called San Elijo Hills my new home after living overseas.
After having to start all over again, I am so thankful for the support and trust of my past clients as well as the new clients and friends I have made while opening my first salon, KASA here in the Town Square in 2020. I recently opened my second salon ARTEZA in the village of Rancho Santa Fe and I’m excited to see what the new year brings!
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started in the beauty industry?
KARLA: I started working at a hair salon when I was 15 years old because my mom was a hairdresser. It just came naturally to me and I would practice on all of my girlfriends hair. I started beauty school two days after graduating high school and the rest is history!
MOMSTOWN: What is it about your work that brings you the greatest joy?
KARLA: One of my greatest joys is making people feel good. I also love that I get to go through life events with my clients from the bad to the good, it really helps create a special bond. The more you get to know someone, the better you can create the hair style that fits them best.
MOMSTOWN: What is the most difficult part of your business?
KARLA: Aside from the balancing act of running two salons, being a mom to a threeyear-old, and taking time for myself, I think the hardest part is having to separate the creative and business side. Sometimes, I have to make decisions based on what would be best for business and less on my passions.
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help others follow their passions and dreams?
KARLA: In order to do what you love I’ve realized that you’re going to have to master a lot of things that you do not like. For me, it’s math, I’ve always hated it. But in order to be successful I had to step outside of my comfort zone to learn how to run the financial side of my businesses.
MOMSTOWN: What are the best tips to look our best this Spring and Summer?
1. GET CLEAR. Keep a clarifier in the shower. Use a clarifying shampoo for your hair weekly to remove any kind of chemical/environmental build up (especially to help against chlorine damage during the summer)
2. DON'T GO TO SLEEP WITH WET HAIR! Some people do not realize this but hair is at its most fragile state when it is wet.
3. MAKE THE SWITCH. Switch from elastic hair ties to satin or silk scrunchies to avoid breakage.
4. BE BOLD. Don’t be afraid of using hair product, the right product can make all the difference. For example, heat protectant spray and a leave-in conditioner could really help save your hair.
5. CURL UP WITH A GOOD GEL. If your hair won’t hold a curl, use a good amount of gel prior to blow drying and it will have your curls lasting all day even in the heat.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about your studio. How would you like readers to contact you? Plus, any other information you’d like to add, please let us know.
KARLA: My hair studio Kasa in San Elijo Hills is located inside of the same building as The Lost Abbey and I think it is such a fun and unique place to be in the heart of the community. Feel free to stop by to say hello, buy your favorite salon product, or ask any questions.
Alternatively, text at 760-825-1860 or follow the studio Instagram at @Kasa.HairStudio

5 outdated fashion rules
The other day I walked by a woman talking with her husband saying very matter-of-factly, “You don’t wear navy & black together, ever, it’s a no-no!” I, so desperately, wanted to interrupt and say, “Yes, yes you can!”
When working with my clients, questions about certain fashion “rules” always come up. Each time I eagerly explain that all of those old archaic rules about matching, not wearing specific colors together or during a certain time of year, etc. are all out the door. I’m not saying you can’t follow them anymore, I'm saying you don’t have to.
This article is for that woman and anyone who thinks fashion has hard & fast rules. We’re living in a time where personal style and expression is the rule. Have fun with your clothes, if you love what you’re wearing and feel confident, go for it!

CARRIE HAS BEEN ON A FASHION ADVENTURE FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY AS A BUYER, STYLIST AND CONSULTANT IN VARIOUS CORNERS OF THE WORLD (NEW YORK, SINGAPORE, EUROPE AND CALIFORNIA). CARRIE SAYS HER TRUE PASSION IS WORKING WITH PEOPLE TO HELP BRING THEIR FASHION PERSONALITY TO LIFE, AND THAT FINE-TUNING A CLIENT’S STYLE IS WHAT BRINGS HER JOY.
1 DON'T WEAR NAVY & BLACK TOGETHER This is one of my favorite color combinations! It is so chic.
2 AVOID WEARING WHITE IN WINTER That Memorial Day/ Labor Day rule is out the window. Summer White to Winter White; white is beautiful all year round.
3 ALWAYS MATCH YOUR SHOES TO YOUR BAG Matching your shoes and bag isn’t a bad thing and will always look good, however, you don’t have to. Feel free to mix and match.
4 DON'T MIX PRINTS I love mixing prints, it’s a fun way to add your personality to an outfit. Just be sure both prints are in the same tonal range so your outfit still looks cohesive.
5 DON'T WEAR DENIM ON DENIM Yes, it’s the Canadian tuxedo and it looks great! Don’t be afraid to go full denim. Wear it with confidence and you’ll look so stylish.
popular franchises
Have you thought about franchising? It's not as expensive as you think.
THERE ARE THREE STRUCTURES TO CONSIDER:
PASSIVE INCOME
Absentee Investor
Franchisee acts as an “investor.” Corporate will set up and manage the business for the Franchisee. This is a hands-off approach that allows you to have freedom.
SEMI-OWNER
Part-time
Franchisees keep their full-time job and hire a manager to oversee the dayto-day tasks of the franchise. Your job is to manage the manager and the finances of the business.
OWNER/OPERATOR
Full-time
Franchisees focus on hiring and managing the staff. You will need to market locally to attract clients, manage the staff, and the finances of the business and day-to-day operations.
TWO EXAMPLES of popular franchises for moms:
FETCH
• Dog sitters
• Dog walkers
• Reliable care for your pet
S.T.E.M.
• After school coding and Robotic skills
• Future-ready S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics)

HOW MOM MADE IT! making wine
IN THIS MONTH’S FEATURE OF HOW MOM MADE IT! WE’RE TAKING YOU ON A WINE TOUR TO TEMECULA VALLEY. SAN ELIJO HILLS RESIDENT, OLIVIA BUE, IS THE WINEMAKER AT ROBERT RENZONI VINEYARDS. SHE STARTED HER CAREER AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS, SPENT YEARS MAKING WINES AROUND THE WORLD, AND NOW THIS BUSY WIFE AND MOM OF TWO IS BOTTLING SOME OF THE BEST WINES IN THE WORLD. WE HAD A CHANCE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW OLIVIA IS BLENDING FAMILY LIFE WITH HER PROFESSIONAL LIFE.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Olivia Bue!
OLIVIA: I was born and raised in the same Olivenhain home my parents still live in almost 34 years later. Growing up on an acre+ of land, my childhood consisted of being outside and getting my hands dirty. Whether I was collecting the chicken eggs from the barn or digging up a mud bath for our family pig, Freddy, it’s easy to say I was drawn to nature and the outdoors at an early age.
My amazing husband, Tyler, and I now reside in San Elijo Hills with our son, Remington (4), and daughter, Dakota (2). As both Encinitas natives it wasn’t a surprise when I decided to head back to Southern California in search of a winemaking position in Temecula Valley.
I was hired by Robert as Assistant Winemaker for Robert Renzoni in 2014, obviously with the goal of becoming the head Winemaker. After two and a half years of devoting myself to the wines and the success of the winery, the promotion to Winemaker came, as promised. Being part of the famiglia here at Robert Renzoni Vineyards for the past 9+ years has been incredible. I’ve been able to grow with the company and become hands on in every angle of the expanding business.
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started in the wine business?
OLIVIA: Believe it or not, as a senior at La Costa Canyon HS, I decided to pursue a career in winemaking thanks to a family friend who opened my eyes to the wine industry as they were beginning a winery in Paso Robles called Field Recordings. The stars aligned and I was accepted into UC Davis months later. After graduating in 2011 with a Viticulture and Enology science degree, I began broadening my knowledge by interning at several wineries around the world. I was learning to make wine next to the kangaroos in Australia at Mollydooker Winery for a southern hemisphere harvest followed by a harvest in Napa Valley at Cakebread Cellars. Both were fantastic opportunities and made me realize how important it was to me to be working at a high quality and focused family-operated winery.
MOMSTOWN: What is it about being a winemaker that brings you the greatest joy?
OLIVIA: Devoting my energy and passion into the wines here at Robert Renzoni Vineyards for the past 9+ years and sharing the fruits of my labor with family and friends is extraordinary. Wine brings people together and, to me, symbolizes meaningful conversations, love, monumental moments, friendship.
The process of making wine is magical. The patience and devotion that goes into cultivating grapes in a vineyard then transforming each of these varietals into its own unique wine is a beautiful thing to witness.
MOMSTOWN: What is the most difficult part of working in the wine business?
OLIVIA: Beginning work before daybreak 6-7 days a week for about 3 months a year is what winemaking entails during harvest time. Balancing my two passions is the most difficult part of being a winemaker. My priorities in life are being a devoted mother to my family and also continuing to grow and transpire as a winemaker. Balancing these two can be challenging and exhausting but it’s important to
me for my kids to see what hard work and ambition looks like. I’m so enthusiastic and passionate about making wine, it brings joy to my life which ultimately makes me a better mom. Early morning pumpovers will be part of the harvest norm for them. Can’t wait to put them to work in a few years!
MOMSTOWN: What does it mean to you to be a mom and working in a typically male-dominated industry?
OLIVIA: I’m certainly proud of being a woman in a male dominated
12 MOMSTOWN • MAR/APR 2023
OLIVIA & FAMILY
OLIVIA BUE
industry and I’m especially proud of being the only head winemaker in Temecula Valley. I began this path of winemaking in my early 20s when my eyes were big and bright and I was ready to take on the world so truthfully, I never focused on the gender discrimination in the wine industry nor has being a woman held me back in any way. At Robert Renzoni Vineyards, the team has always advocated for me being a woman winemaker. Surrounding yourself by people who uplift and support you is key!
I grew up surrounded by incredibly strong women. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and a Parkinson’s patient and truly the most inspiring woman. Her positive attitude toward life and not allowing anything to get in the way of achieving your dreams was engrained in me at an early age. I never felt inferior as a woman.
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help others follow their passions and dreams?
OLIVIA: The best advice I was given was to find a place that you can grow with and commit to. The grass isn’t always greener. Learn to appreciate what’s right in front of you. There is always going to be an obstacle, instead of quickly closing a door, figure out what you can do to make it greater and brighter and devote yourself to that one thing. For all you know you could be sitting in a gold mine. Keep digging!
MOMSTOWN: AND Finally, TIPS! Your best tips for choosing the best bottles of wines?
OLIVIA: For white wines, shop by vintage! For a dry, crisp, clean white wine buy a 2022. Most, dry whites start oxidizing after a few years. *Note: vintage = the year the grapes were harvested from the vineyards. Most whites are bottled a few months after being picked so shop for a white within 1 vintage of the current year.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Robert Renzoni Vineyards. How do we find your vineyard and when is the best time to visit? Are there any special events this spring/summer that we should know about? Plus, any other information you’d like to add, please let us know.
OLIVIA: Robert’s great grandfather, Federico, began making wine in Fano, Italy (3 hours south of Venice along the Adriatic coast) in 1886. Robert followed his grandparents footsteps and began Robert Renzoni Vineyards back in 2008 after purchasing a beautiful property on De Portola Road in Temecula Valley.
Here we focus predominately on Italian varietals along with a few Bordeaux and Spanish wines as well. Our on-site restaurant, Mama Rosa’s Trattoria, makes delicious homemade pizzas in our brick oven along with other fresh Italian comfort food favorites. We have been awarded over 20 90+ scores from Wine Enthusiast. Including our latest 94 pts from our 2019 Meritage.
We are open 7 days a week, 11am –6pm. Trattoria is open everyday 12pm - 5pm so come hungry! Live music on the weekends.

That Cheesy Mom on her ARTISANAL PATH to SUCCESS
Let’s just all agree: That Cheesy Mom is one of the best titles for a business we’ve heard in a very long time!
Owner of That Cheesy Mom, Patrice Thompson, is the purveyor of all things fromage. She is a charcuterie board connoisseur and stylist, and her gorgeous boards and grazers are appetizingly gorgeous! We had a chance to ask this stylish foodie how she got started in her delicious venture.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Patrice, That Cheesy Mom!
PATRICE: For starters, I am a momma of two! Micah (12) and Harper (5). They really are the driving force behind everything I do. I’m originally from the East Bay Area in Northern California but have called Southern California home for over a decade now. I actually never attended culinary school but have always had a love for cooking. Not only am I the Founder and creator of That Cheesy Mom but, I am also a beauty rep and mentor for a premium anti-aging haircare line. Two very different positions but they seem to have collided perfectly!
I love to travel but it’s usually revolved around food, shocker, I know! Surprise, surprise, my favorite place is in the kitchen. It’s my love language & anything I do in the kitchen is truly filled with love.
MOMSTOWN: What is That Cheesy Mom? How did you come up with the idea of starting the business?
PATRICE: That Cheesy Mom is a charcuterie company I started four years ago. It actually started out as That Meal Prep Chick, which was a meal prep service I founded and owned for over six years with a location based here and the East Bay Area. Once my daughter was born, I decided to close up shop and, around that same time, had been asked to cater a few events. Being that I could still create but not be as tied to the kitchen I said, “Why not?” Cue the love for charcuterie far and wide and, well with lots of practice, here we are today!
MOMSTOWN: What is it about creating boards that give you the greatest joy?
PATRICE: Honestly it’s like art to me. I’m a creative at heart and if you’re a client you know not one board is the same. I don’t mass produce and truly love to watch and know someone is enjoying something I created for them personally.
MOMSTOWN: What is the difference between a board and a grazer?
PATRICE: A board is much smaller and great for small gatherings or gifts. A grazer is much larger! It typically comes with different levels, decor, and is more so used at weddings, large corporate events, etc.
MOMSTOWN: Do you have some simple tips for creating a quick charcuterie board at home?
PATRICE: Find a one-stop shop. Trader Joe’s is amazing. You can grab everything there and it’s very cost efficient. Not just that, but the cheese and meat are of pretty incredible quality. Also, don’t complicate it, get creative! I like to always start with a focal point in the center of the board.
MOMSTOWN: When is it time to call in That Cheesy Mom? Do you provide boards for small get-togethers and what is the largest crowd you serve?
PATRICE: All the time! I provide orders for individual charcuterie cones, brie boxes for
gifts, larger boards for events and large, 200+ grazers for weddings. I’m also not limited to charcuterie, I have a handful of clients I've done brunch set-ups for, craft sandwiches, salads and so much more. I’ve been a personal chef so I try not to limit just to meat and, although it is my specialty.
MOMSTOWN: What's the best way to reach you?

Art of the DYI
Art brings people together in all kinds of ways. We gather to appreciate art at festivals, galleries and museums. However, to experience art, to craft with your own two hands, is a truly meaningful way to understand art and community.
PAM ZEMAN
Blending art and community with that handson experience is artist, creative and DIYer, Pam Zeman. Pam is the owner of the local art studio, AR Workshop. Pam shares with us how she started the studio and what it means to her and our local community.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Pam Zeman!
PAM: I grew up on the East Coast and moved to North County in 2005. I spent my first 28 years of life in rural town in Maine and was so excited to move to California. I am married to a very kind and supportive husband, and we have two children. We have lived in San Marcos for 13 years and still cannot imagine living anywhere else.
MOMSTOWN: Owning your own business has always been one of your dreams; please tell us about your business and how you decided to take the leap and start it?
PAM: I own AR Workshop San Marcos which is a boutique DIY studio that offers hands-on classes for creating custom and charming home décor from raw materials. In our workshop, you can choose to make one of our many wood or canvas projects, you can also knit Chunky Knit Blankets and pour your own candles. I have always been a DIYer and have remodeled all of the houses I have owned. As my children grew older, I felt like I needed something that fulfilled my dreams of owning my own business. AR Workshop puts my love of DIY, crafting and owning my own giftshop into one.
MOMSTOWN: What is it about your business that brings you the greatest joy?
PAM: My greatest joy is when a customer looks at their completed project with admiration and then comes back to make more. The excitement in their face is priceless. A lot of people don’t realize that we have a gift shop and I love when people come in and enjoy shopping in our retail section.
MOMSTOWN: What has been the hardest part about starting a new venture?
PAM: The hardest part is finding the right work/life balance. I love my business, but I also love spending time with my family. It’s sometimes hard to find the right balance between the two.
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help others follow their passions and dreams?
PAM: My advice would be to always follow your dreams and do what makes you the happiest. If you are passionate about something, then go for it!
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about AR Workshop and what would you like readers to do? Any other information you’d like to add?
PAM: AR Workshop is an experience. Sure, you will take home something that you have made, but most of all, we want you to have a great time. I don’t think people know we offer classes for young and old. At our workshop you can have a birthday party, team building
event, baby or bridal shower, or just have a group of friends and family you want to spend some time together. Our kids summer art camps are also very popular!
If I had one thing that I could tell customers, it would be to not be intimidated to come make one of our projects. We will help you; you will take home a beautiful piece of home décor and you will have fun making it.

the
Paella Lady OWNER
of Driana Foods
Paella. It’s one of those dishes that somehow seems to have a showstopping quality and, at the same time, be comforting. We would say paella creates community, but it’s really the person that is creating the paella that brings us, and the dish, together. Chef Adriana is the owner of Driana Foods. She has appeared on the national stage and we’re lucky she’s right here, catering in North County.
She’s known as The Paella Lady, but there’s so much more to the story and what she creates. We had a chance to ask Chef Adriana about her catering company and the power of food to bring people together.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Chef Adriana!
CHEF ADRIANA: I came to this country in my late teens, I grew up surrounded by amazing cooks in my family that showed their love through food. My family is from Spain and who crafted the famous Serrano and Iberico Hams for over 40 years. They taught me the art of cooking and eating well. “Cooking, eating and sharing these bonding moments is what we live for.” Inspired by my family’s recipes I created Driana Foods, a catering company and also a food product manufacturing company located in San Marcos where we have been operating from a commercial kitchen since 20016.
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started as a chef? And, why did you decide to specialize in paellas and Spanish cuisine?
CHEF ADRIANA: I decided to become a chef almost 14 years ago. I went to school for speech pathology and worked in that field for a few years and soon realized it was not my passion. I had no idea what my passion was, but I knew that every time I cooked I was at ease and I had a sense of peace. I decided to go to culinary school in Boulder, Colorado where I was living at the time. After I graduated, I proposed to my school a Paella Pilot class, very shortly we had a waiting list, and the rest was history.
MOMSTOWN: What is it about cooking that brings you the greatest joy?
CHEF ADRIANA: When you cook from the heart, you give people a piece of your soul, and that imprint stays with them, sometimes for a lifetime. The possibility of becoming part of someone’s fondest food memory is a beautiful and humbling privilege
MOMSTOWN: What is the most difficult part of working in the food industry?
CHEF ADRIANA: The food industry is intense and it demands a lot of you. The physical and emotional labor can push you to the point that it breaks you. You will not survive it if you are not all in and willing to do it with total surrender.
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help others follow their passions and dreams?
CHEF ADRIANA: Be sincere and congruent with yourself, make sure your mind, heart and soul is in the same place before you pursue your dreams. Trust the universe and the rest will take care of itself. And, love is the most delicious ingredient.
MOMSTOWN: Finally, share with us your favorite things to cook?
CHEF ADRIANA: I love cooking Paella, every time I make it, it feels exhilarating. I also love making stews of any kind. I love the alchemy that happens when ingredients cook low and slow and are transformed into a delicious, aromatic delicacy. It is fascinating to me.
MOMSTOWN: What else would you like to share and how readers can find you?
CHEF ADRIANA: I am known as the Paella Queen or Paella Lady, I have been on the Food Network show Cooks vs Cons and have cooked in many news shows like Fox 5, Kusi News and Despierta America.

local mom turns DOUGH into CASH
JULIE IVERSEN
If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a homebased food business, you’re in luck! Cottage Food businesses are taking off and it’s becoming easier than ever to start food businesses from your home kitchen.
This month, we caught up with a local cottage food operator. Her name is Julie Iversen and she’s the owner of Dipped Confections. Julie is turning her creativity, talent and passion for baking into a profitable side hustle.
MOMSTOWN: Tell us about Julie Iversen and how you started your cookie company!
JULIE: I grew up baking with my Grandma who was my favorite person ever! She taught me some of her favorite “tips & tricks” that I still continue to use in my baking daily. I am originally from Central California and have lived in beautiful North County San Diego for 11 years. I am married to my wonderful husband Bradley, I’m a Mom to two beautiful daughters Jessica & Mariah and a Grandma (Gaga) to two precious grandchildren, Bentley & Kensingtin.
MOMSTOWN: How did you get started in the baking business? How do you find the inspiration for such creativity?! Seriously, your cookies are gorgeous!
JULIE: Thank you so much! My husband and I enjoy entertaining and I have always loved to bake fun themed treats for our parties. We host a Christmas party every year and I decorate a Christmas tree with a different theme and bake coordinating sweet treats for every room. We open our home to family and friends to enjoy the decor & treats, and it has become one of our favorite annual traditions.

DIPPED CONFECTIONS
This month, we caught up with a local cottage food operator. Her name is Julie Iversen and she’s the owner of Dipped Confections. Julie is turning her creativity, talent and passion for baking into a profitable side hustle.
My very first order was for a girlfriend who attended one of our parties. She asked if I would be willing to bake for her daughter’s wedding of 200 guests. I was definitely a bit hesitant as baking was “just a hobby” for me at that time, but I was also excited and I did it! That order quickly turned into more orders & Dipped Confections was established.
MOMSTOWN: Is Dipped Confections a cottage food business or do you operate out of a commercial kitchen?
JULIE: Yes, Dipped Confections is a licensed Cottage Food Home Baking Business
MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have to help others follow their passions and dreams?
JULIE: My advice would be to find your passion and follow it where it leads you. I honestly never really thought much about my passion for baking turning into an actual business, I just knew that it was my happy place. It wasn’t until friends started asking me to bake for them and one referral led to another that I realized this could be more than just a hobby. I recently completed my largest order to date of one thousand Cake Pops! It was both challenging and exciting and most definitely a “pinch me moment.” I’m excited to continue following my passion and look forward to seeing where it leads me in 2023!
MOMSTOWN: Finally, tempt our sweet tooth! How do we order? Do you have upcoming seasonal promotions? Custom orders?
JULIE: Dipped Confections offers a variety of custom created sweets for all occasions:
● Custom/Logo Sugar Cookies
● Cake Pops
● Cupcakes
● Cocoa Bombs
● Chocolate Dipped Oreos & Pretzels
Custom orders are welcomed year-round, and we offer holidaythemed specialty treats.
Spring is a busy season, with Easter, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Graduations.

the importance of hands-on CPR
MORE THAN 350,000 SUDDEN CARDIAC ARRESTS OCCUR ANNUALLY OUTSIDE HOSPITAL SETTINGS; HOWEVER, A HANDSON EMERGENCY INTERVENTION LIKE CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR), ESPECIALLY IF PERFORMED IMMEDIATELY, CAN DOUBLE OR TRIPLE A CARDIAC ARREST VICTIM’S CHANCE OF SURVIVAL.
According to the American Heart Association, 70% of cardiac arrests electrical malfunctions in the heart that cause an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupt the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs – occur at home, but often family and friends who witness a child, spouse, parent or friend going into cardiac arrest hesitate to perform potentially lifesaving CPR for fear of making the situation worse.
“By equipping people with Hands-Only CPR training, we are empowering them to spring into action if a loved one needs help, as the majority of cardiac arrests occur at home,” said Dr. Anezi Uzendu, M.D., interventional cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer.
As part of its Hands-Only CPR campaign, nationally supported by the Elevance Health Foundation, the American Heart Association aims to increase awareness about the importance of bystander CPR and offers these two simple steps:
1 CALL 911
2 5
STEPS TO SAVE A LIFE SLEEP
Using the beat of a familiar song with 100-120 beats per minute, such as “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, can help you stay on pace with the necessary compressions.
“Being able to efficiently perform Hands-Only CPR in the moment can mean the difference between life and death, and by following these two simple steps we can increase someone’s chance of survival from cardiac arrest,” said Shantanu Agrawal, M.D., board certified emergency medicine doctor and chief health officer at Elevance Health. “As a longstanding supporter of the American Heart Association, we remain focused on working together to improve health inequities in our communities by expanding access to training and increasing the number of people who learn and feel confident performing Hands-Only CPR to save lives.”
2 PUSH HARD & FAST in the center of the chest of the individual experiencing the cardiac arrest.
HABITS
essential for heart health
IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING A TIME CHANGE DUE TO DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME, RESEARCH SHOWS A MARKED INCREASE IN HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES. HOWEVER, LOSING SLEEP ANYTIME CAN BE A MAJOR RISK FACTOR FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
“Getting a good night’s sleep every night is vital to cardiovascular health,” said Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and chair of the department of preventive medicine, the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research and professor of preventive medicine, medicine and pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “Adults should aim for an average of 7-9 hours and babies and kids need more depending on their age. Unfortunately, we know as many as 1 in 3 people do not get their recommended amount of sleep each night.”
In addition to increasing risk for cardiovascular conditions like heart attack and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of things like depression, cognitive decline and obesity.
Consider these small changes in daily habits that can make a big difference in sleep quality:
1. MAKE HEALTHY LIVING A HABIT: Eat a balanced diet, get regular physical activity and manage stress to support a healthier night’s sleep.
To find more information, watch a livestream video demonstration of Hands-Only CPR or download a first aid smartphone app visit: heart.org/CPRhttps://cpr.heart.org
2. SET THE ALARM FOR MORNING AND NIGHT: Stick to specific times to go to bed and wake up each day and commit to a consistent sleep schedule as much as possible. Along with a wake-up alarm, try a bedtime alarm to indicate it’s time to start winding down.
3. ESTABLISH BEDTIME HABITS: Once your bedtime alarm goes off, move into a familiar ritual, like brushing your teeth, washing your face or taking a warm bath.
4. RELAX AND UNWIND: Take a few minutes to destress. Consider reading, journaling, meditating or listening to music to ease into a good night’s rest.
5. TAKE A TECHNOLOGY BREAK: A bedroom free of light and technology equates to better sleep, so keep your phone and other devices away from the bed. Try logging off your electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime.

TO AVOID TRAVEL SCAMS
Next time you search the web to book that long-awaited vacation, consider these tips from the experts at Expedia to spot, avoid and report scams.
► SEARCH ENGINE & GIFT CARD SCAMS
Fraudsters will buy fake ads with illegitimate contact information for well-known companies to pose as agents and ensnare people searching for online support numbers. These imposters often request gift cards in exchange for services such as a trip refund or flight change, wire transfers or sensitive personal information. They may even use personal data obtained from unaware customers to use an itinerary look-up tool and view real trip details in order to gain additional trust.
► PHONE CALL SCAMS
Scammers will sometimes use “spoofing” technology to make telephone numbers appear legitimate then claim a customer won a prize such as cash, a trip or credit for future travel from a trusted travel company. In exchange, these convincing scammers may ask for personal information including a name, address, payment information and social security number.
► EMAIL SCAMS
Phishing is a scam criminals use to ask for personal information via email by tricking recipients into clicking a link, opening an attachment or directly providing the information. When they appear to come from established businesses or organizations, the emails can be quite convincing, as they sometimes even link to legitimatelooking websites.
THE INTERNET BRINGS VACATIONS AND GETAWAYS TO TRAVELERS’ FINGERTIPS, BUT INSTANT ACCESS ALSO MEANS VULNERABILITY TO FRAUDSTERS LOOKING TO STEAL DATA. SCAMS SUCH AS FAKE PHONE NUMBERS ON POPULAR SEARCH ENGINE RESULTS CAN LEAD TO STOLEN MONEY OR SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION LIKE CREDIT CARD DETAILS.

Immediately following the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States, outdoor and drivable destinations were in big demand for domestic travelers. Americans are now embracing the idea of traveling much as they did prior to the pandemic; however, travel trends IN 2023 suggest there is no normal when it comes to travel planning. Individual interests are driving decisions about where to go/what to do.
“We see a detailed and robust picture of travel into 2023,” Expedia Brands President Jon Gieselman said. “We’re seeing a surge in trips to culture capitals, a new wave of interest in wellness retreats and a spike in demand for outdoor destinations beyond just beaches and mountains. It’s not a new normal so much as people branching out to unexpected trends in what we’re calling the ‘no normal.’”
A close look at these trends suggests there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to travel in 2023. Insights from the company’s first-party data, and from custom research of thousands of travelers and industry professionals across 17 countries, show personal interests and pop culture are heavily influencing travel choices.
CONSIDER THESE CONCLUSIONS FROM EXPERTS AT EXPEDIA:
JET-SETTERS
Booking a trip after bingeing a popular series will become serious business in 2023. Research confirms streamed movies and TV shows are now the top sources of travel inspiration (40%), outpacing the influence of social media (31%). Furthermore, the small screen is now considered on par with recommendations from friends and family when it comes to travel inspiration.
WHEN IN DOUBT, END THE CONVERSATION
If you think you’ve received a fraudulent phone call or are in contact with an imposter, hang up or end the conversation immediately.
Do not click any suspicious links or engage further. Double check the sender’s address and delete any suspicious emails. Take note of how you came into contact, such as the phone number you dialed, the contact information displayed and any other identifying information provided by the scammer.
Contact representatives of the company the scammer claimed to represent along with the Federal Trade Commission and state attorney general.
TRUST THE EXPERTS With a trusted travel group like Expedia, your experience and safety are the top priorities, meaning representatives won’t request a gift card in exchange for services, call or send an email asking for account passwords, request personal information unrelated to a previous service issue or request wire transfers or payment information through text messages.
If you need help with your trip, visit Expedia.com or use the mobile app for self-service tools like a 24/7 virtual agent so you can easily change or cancel trips, redeem credits and check on the status of a refund, all without having to call in to speak with an agent.
explore trendingwhat's in travel
Travel trends on the horizon for 2023 suggest there is no normal when it comes to travel planning. Instead, individual interests are driving decisions about where to go and what to do.
In the U.S., more than two-thirds (68%) of travelers considered visiting a destination after seeing it in a show or movie on a streaming platform, and a whopping 61% went ahead and booked a trip. Top set-jetter destinations include New Zealand, with its landscapes featured in one of this year’s most epic series, followed by the United Kingdom, Paris, New York and the beach resorts of Hawaii.
CULTURE CAPITALS
National parks and rural retreats had big moments the past couple of years. Now, cities are seeing a comeback. Based on traveler demand, most of the destinations seeing the largest increases are culture-rich cities where art and culture festivities are back in full swing. Examples include the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, WorldPride in Sydney and the cherry blossoms in Tokyo. Culture capitals that are calling loudest include:
• Edinburgh, Scotland
• Lisbon, Portugal
• Tokyo
• Dublin
• New York
• Sydney
• Dubai, United Arab Emirates
• Montreal
• Munich
• Bangkok

P ro Tips
PICK A THEME
such as luxury comfort.
DEFINE YOUR LARGEST PIECES
We call them the basics. A neutral sofa is a safe investment as it will hold its color and style for years to come.
GROUND YOUR SPACE
Consider an area rug larger than the sofa. Ensure you leave at least 6-12” from the wall to identify your living area.
ADD IN FUNCTION
This is typically lighting, side tables, a coffee table, or console.
This is a great way to play with pattern and texture. Think pillows, blankets, accessories and the like. This creates interest, and texture to the room and makes it easy to swap out seasonal accessories.
THINK VERTICAL
Color up the walls with an inviting paint color. Better yet, add wallpaper for depth and visual interest.
CHERRY ON TOP IS ART
Place a collage, large impactful wall piece or something that provides daily inspiration. Feeling creative? Paint your mantra on canvas. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should bring you joy.
