MUST-HAVES
CARRIE HAS BEEN ON A FASHION ADVENTURE FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS WORKING IN THE IN DUSTRY AS A BUYER, STYLIST AND CONSULTANT IN VARIOUS CORNERS OF THE WORLD (NEW YORK, SINGAPORE, EUROPE AND CALIFORNIA). CARRIE SAYS HER TRUE PASSION IS WORKING WITH PEOPLE TO HELP BRING THEIR FASHION PERSONALITY TO LIFE, AND THAT FINE-TUNING A CLIENT’S STYLE IS WHAT BRINGS HER JOY.
Sorting through the latest fashions, season-in-and-season-out, can be daunting and a bit overwhelming. To help us navigate the seasonal what’s-hot-and-what’s-not and discover our true personal style (which, in our opinion, never goes out of fashion) is personal style expert, Carrie Harkin.
To help us improve our mood this season Carrie is sharing with us some simple strategies for spicing up our fall wardrobes.
Whether you’re in full swing at work or home running around with the kids, these are approachable and versatile options to keep you current for the season while not feeling like you fell victim to the trend trap.
1 FLARED JEANS: A boot cut or slim flared jean hemmed just at the right length is one of the most flattering jean shapes for a woman. It gives a slimming effect while elongating your legs, giving off the illusion of “legs for days.” This is the “it” jean shape for the season, but we all know this is not a new shape. I believe it will undoubtedly stand the test of time and trends. I love these for a date night or girls night out as the effect is best achieved with a heeled shoe. If there is one piece to pick out of these 5 Must Haves, this is it!
4 A NOVELTY KNIT: When I think of fall I think cozy...and what's cozier than a sweater? Hopefully you already have your basic sweaters that you reach for day in and day out come the cooler months, but be sure to have at least one knitwear piece that is more novel for when you need to dress up a little and feel stylish. A nov elty knit could be as straightforward as in a color that compliments your skin tone and makes you glow. Or it can be more fun, such as a pattern, stripe, intarsia or textured (like a cable knit or fringe). I love a tasteful fringed sweater in a neutral color it never goes out of style. Pair your novelty knit with your flared jeans or faux leather pants and you’ve got yourself a go-to outfit.
2
FAUX LEATHER: In line with the sustainability movement, real leather is taking a backseat to faux. There are a plethora of options of how to incorporate faux leather into your wardrobe from a jacket to a dress to pants a jacket being the most approachable. For a sophisticated and slimming look, try a mid-thigh car coat or a blazer. For more edge, opt for a moto jacket. If you’re feeling bold, faux leath er pants or a dress are my favorite stylish options. There are a variety of shapes and colors to choose from, so no matter your body shape or style there is something for everyone, and the best part...faux sits at a much sharper price point than real leather. I promise, you’ll be reaching for your faux leather piece come every fall season.
5 COLOR: BROWN Brown can be a sophisticated and chic neutral for everyone; however, there are mixed emotions about the color brown. I get it, you have to be careful to find the right shade to compliment your skin tone, otherwise it can leave you looking washed out. Here's the trick : If you have warm or more yellow un dertones, opt for a brown with a golden or red tone. If you have cool or blue undertones, go for a brown with more grey or blue tones. One of my favorite ways to incorporate brown into a client's ward robe is with knitwear or leather. If you can find “your” brown in a faux leather piece, you’ve just killed two birds with one stone!
3
THE CHELSEA BOOT: It’s not fall without a good boot and the Chelsea boot is no stranger to the fall roundup; however, for a more updated feel go for a pointed toe option. The pointed toe gives a slimming effect as opposed to a round toe which is more bulky. Or if you have the Chelsea boot covered, you can go Americana with a stylish cowboy boot they work great under a dress, skirt or wider leg pant.

THINGS TO AMP UP10 your personal happiness
If you want to be happier, there’s good news. You don’t have to do anything dramatic or overly challenging to regularly put a big smile on your face. Only a few simple things are needed to experience greater levels of happiness. It’s much easier than you think.
Use these ideas to enjoy greater happiness in your day-to-day life:
1 EXPERIENCE GRATITUDE Gratitude puts your mind in a positive state. Imagine the difference between feeling gratitude a few times each day versus focusing on your challenges several times each day. Gratitude reminds you that things aren’t as bad as they seem. This can be enough to keep you going.
2 EXERCISE
It’s good for your body and mind. It reduces stress and has so many other benefits. If you don’t have a physically demanding job, exercise is necessary for maximum happiness.
6
DEAL WITH THE THINGS THAT SAP YOUR HAPPINESS —
Being happy isn’t only about positive things. It’s also about removing the neg ative. What are the biggest hassles and annoyances in your life right now? Take steps to minimize or eliminate them.
7 HELP SOMEONE ELSE It’s not all about you. There’s a part of you that instinctively knows this. If everything in your life is about you, you’ll never be as happy as you could be. Regularly spend some time doing some thing for someone else. You’ll be happier with yourself.
3
LOOK FORWARD TO SOMETHING — It could be a weekend getaway, buying a new book after work on Friday, or see ing an old friend next month. Big or small, give yourself something you can look forward to.
4 LIVE IN THE PRESENT Avoid spending too much time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Life can only happen right now. If your mind is somewhere else, you’re not really living.
5 GET AN EARLY START TO YOUR DAY — A good morning leads to a good day. A good day leads to a good week, and so on. One of the best ways to have a good day is to have a good morning. Give yourself enough time to have a great morning on a consistent basis.
8
TAKE ACTION TOWARD A GOAL When you pursue a goal, you’re taking control of your life. This is very different from just responding to life’s curveballs. Set a goal and begin working toward achieving it.
9
We don’t like to forgive others. We feel they don’t deserve it. Unfortunately, most of the people who have wronged you aren’t especially bothered by your opinions of them. You’re only hurting yourself by holding a grudge.
FORGIVE QUICKLY
10 LEARN SOMETHING NEW
It should be unthinkable to live an entire year and not learn something useful or interesting. Each year should bring some personal growth. Get started. What do you want to learn?
Spend some time implementing these ideas and ask yourself what you need to be happier. Set a goal to increase the happiness in your life. You’ll be happy you did!
Thanksgiving every day
HOW GRATITUDE ATTRACTS MORE BLESSINGS
WHY WAIT UNTIL THANKSGIVING TO EXPRESS YOUR GRATITUDE?
You have the luxury of living your joyous life every single day of the year. Make it a point to recognize your blessings and remind yourself that showing gratitude for all you already have attracts further blessings into your life.
FIVE WAYS THAT SHOWING GRATITUDE ATTRACTS MORE ABUNDANCE INTO YOUR LIFE:
1 YOU'LL BE THANKFUL FOR THE LITTLE THINGS When you're in a positive mindset, you'll learn to appreciate the little things. The sweetest blessings come in the smallest forms. Once you learn to love, recognize, and be thankful for the little things in life, your quality of life will increase because you'll be aware of how fortunate you really are.
2 YOU'LL DEVELOP IMPECCABLE RADAR
If you often reflect on the fortunate events in your life, you'll be able to spot a good oppor tunity a mile away. For example, you'll be able to smell a promotion in the works or an opportunity to bring your family closer. Actively seeking new opportunities to increase your personal quality of life and that of the ones nearest and dearest to your heart will fill your heart with accomplishment.
3 MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH LITTLE CHATS During pickup or drop-Woff, try to leave time for a brief conversation. This could be a quick chat about something fun your child did over the weekend or why he or she might be having a tough day.
4
YOU'LL REACH HIGHER Your grateful ways are a blessing. You appreciate life more intensely when you're grateful. You also see each day as another chance to bring more joy to your reality, lifestyle and future.
5
TAKING OTHERS INTO CONSIDERATION When you're satisfied with your life and feel genuinely happy, you tend to treat others with more kindness. Your own happiness is magnified when you help bring joy to others.
Your life begins to take a turn for the better when you keep in mind how fortunate you really are. The smallest details can boost your spirits.
Starting today, take your positive mindset to new heights and make every day a personal day of thanksgiving!

USING AFFIRMATIONS TO INCREASE HAPPINESS
Life coaches believe that using affirmations can help us change how we view ourselves. Affirmations are positive statements that are written in the present, or mov ing toward the goal. For example: I love and accept myself exactly as I am. Or, my body is becoming stronger and healthier every day.
THINK OF AFFIRMATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING AND WRITE THEM BELOW:
My body is
My mind is
My work is
My relationships are
My health is
My home is
My friends are
My family is
My social life is
My finances are
My sex life is
My spiritual life is

LOCAL MOM creating unique connections
HORSES AND HUMANS HAVE A SPECIAL CONNECTION. IT’S A CONNECTION THAT LOCAL MOM ALESSANDRA DEERNICK HAS FELT THROUGHOUT HER LIFE. BORN AND RAISED IN MILAN, ITALY, ALESSANDRA NOW LIVES IN SAN MARCOS WITH HER HUSBAND AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN.
Alessandra has ridden, competed and trained horses in various equestrian disciplines such as jumping, dressage, endurance and competed as a jockey for 10 years in Italy. The focus of her ac tivity has always been to improve the connection between humans and horses. Alessandra has a degree as a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and works as a horse trainer and instructor at Hu man Horse Sensing (hhsensing.com). She’s also written a book on the topic titled, “Human Horse Sensing Horsemanship.”
We recently asked Alessandra about her lifelong passion.
MOMSTOWN: When did you fall in love with horses and when did you know they would be a part of your professional life?
ALESSANDRA: I was not “born with horses” in Milano, Italy. I pulled them into my life because I always felt drawn to them like a magnet is drawn to metal. I wanted to ride, since I was two, but my dad asked me to wait until I was eleven. A few years later he also asked me to stop because he was concerned about the dangers of riding, but I could not obey him. Riding is my passion and has become my job. At the age of sixteen, in order to keep riding, I went to work at the racetrack, exercising horses before I went to school every morning. I value the time I spent at the racetrack and I am thankful to my parents for insisting that I graduate from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milano.
MOMSTOWN: What do horses mean to you?
ALESSANDRA: Being with horses allowed me to give form to every feeling, expression to every thought and reality to every dream. I have ridden in many different disciplines, trained many horses, and now, aside from being the mother of three children, and having broken my back three times, I am very thankful to God because I still compete in any venue that is suitable for the horses I train. The thrill of an endurance race is for me as excit
ing as teaching my horse to keep eyes and ears on me or to walk truly straight on a loose rein or to teach my skills to others. Since 2009, I have worked as a horsemanship clinician and horse trainer, between the U.S. and Italy, my country of origin. I created HH Sensing to be able to teach it online, and in traditional settings. Being with horses made the dream of my life come true.
MOMSTOWN: What has been the greatest joy in creating your business?
ALESSANDRA: The greatest joy in creating my business is seeing how I can teach others how to properly interact with horses in a cooperative and safe way and help them achieve what they want.
MOMSTOWN: What has been the hardest part about building your business?
ALESSANDRA: The most difficult part in build ing my business has been to keep up with it and at the same time to be a good mother and wife, which I feel are very important parts of a wom an’s life.
MOMSTOWN: What tips would you offer to other moms who are thinking about turning their passion(s) into a business?
ALESSANDRA: When you learn something new about a subject that is your passion, you need study it in depth to be able to express it in real terms and teach it to others so they can enjoy it, too.
MOMSTOWN: What would you like readers to do? Visit your website? Contact you?
ALESSANDRA: If anyone is interested in what I do they can visit my website: hhsensing.com
They can also learn more by reading my book Human Horse Sensing Horsemanship that is published in English on Amazon. They can also contact me by email at hhsensing@icloud.com

ALESSANDRA & FAMILY
The myth about behavior becoming automatic in 21 days started when journalists misinterpreted a popular self-help book on Psycho Cybernetics back in the 1960’s. After all, you can probably eat more vegetables starting today, but com plex tasks like playing the violin are going to take more than a month to gel.
On the other hand, now is an ideal time to begin forming constructive habits that will enhance your happiness and wellbeing. Take a look at these strategies for learning new behaviors.
BASIC STRATEGIES FOR HABIT FORMATION
TRY THESE TIPS FOR EASING INTO YOUR NEW ROU TINES AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE:
1. PLAN AHEAD Eliminate excuses by plotting out your course in advance. If you want to wake up an hour earlier, go to bed on time, and dream about the invigorating yoga class and delicious breakfast that await you in the morning.
2. BE CONSISTENT Regularity reinforces itself. Pretty soon it will be easier to go to the gym after work rather than changing your mind, even if it’s raining or your colleagues are heading out for beer and pizza.
3. SPOT TRIGGERS Kicking a habit requires you to notice what happens right before you bite your nails or buy another pair of shoes. Are you bored at work or arguing with your spouse?
4. DEVELOP SUBSTITUTIONS Once you know your cues, you can choose a different response. Take a walk or invite a friend out for coffee.
5. REVIEW YOUR REASONS Go over the reasons why you want to adopt your new behavior. Remind yourself about how drinking water instead of soda will help you slim down, strengthen your bones, and save money.
6. PERSONALIZE YOUR GOALS While you’re contem plating your reasons, visualize your future self. Focus on what you have to gain instead of just pleasing others.
a surprising fact
ABOUT HOW TO FORM NEW HEALTH HABITS
How many times have you heard that it takes just a few weeks to develop a new habit? The truth is a bit more complicated than that, but there are scientific ways to help you lock in the changes you want to make.
ADVANCED STRATEGIES FOR HABIT FORMATION
What if you’re tackling something as ambitious as managing diabetes or transforming your dead-end dating history?
THESE IDEAS WILL GIVE YOU AN EXTRA BOOST:
1. PRACTICE COMPASSION You’re bound to slip up occa sionally. Forgive yourself, and move forward.
2. TEAM UP Enlist a friend so you can exchange support and encouragement. Eat lunch with a colleague who is trying to lose weight too.
3. WRITE IT DOWN Raise your awareness by keeping a journal about your campaign to stop swearing or start floss ing. Note what happens on the days you stick to your program compared to the days when you drift back into old patterns.
4. REMOVE TEMPTATIONS Eliminate the triggers that dis tract you from your objectives. Clear the junk food out of your kitchen or the cigarettes out of your car.
5. DESIGN OBSTACLES Make it difficult to give in to your old tendencies. Leave your credit cards at home to prevent impulsive shopping sprees.
6. GO ON VACATION Leave home for a while. Vacations are an ideal time to forge new habits because you can make a fresh start in different surroundings. Sit down to meditate each morning instead of becoming caught up in searching for lost socks or checking your email.
Make daily exercise and parallel parking so easy you won’t even have to think about them. Positive habits make advanta geous choices automatic so you’ll stick with them. You’ll also have more energy to devote to other challenges.

HOW MOM MADE IT! from scratch
In less than eight years, Maya Madsen, the owner of Maya’s Cookies, has gone from baking cookies in her kitchen to running “America’s #1 black-owned gourmet vegan cookie company.”
MOMSTOWN:
Tell us about Maya Madsen. Please share with us what you’d like readers to know about your background?
MAYA:
Before Maya’s Cookies came to be, I spent 20 years in the fitness industry teaching every possible fitness class you can think of, rang ing from spin to boot camp to body pump. You name it, I taught it. I’ve been vegan for a long time and while I love eating plant-based, I could never find a vegan version of that per fect, Mrs. Field's style cookie warm and gooey on the inside with a nice, crispy edge. Although Maya’s Cookies did not exist until 2015, as a mom I always enjoyed baking and cooking for my sons, crafting new recipes that would accommodate growing (and sometimes picky) appetites.
MOMSTOWN:
How did you start Maya’s Cookies? Where did you get the idea/inspiration to start a cookie company?
MAYA:
It wasn’t until my three sons got a little older that I even considered turning my sweet tooth into a business. A college education was a non-negotiable for me so the looming pressure of three college tuitions pushed me to pursue my side hobby of baking and turn it into some thing I could share with others. I started small, selling batches of cookies to friends and family (I even entered my cookies into contests at the Del Mar Fair) and then slowly branched out into the local farmer’s market circuit. Gaining some traction with local communities allowed me to get creative and test new recipes, al ways asking my market regulars for their feedback.
MOMSTOWN:
Have you always been a baker? What does baking mean to you?
MAYA:
No, I have not always been a baker. I discov ered baking after becoming a mom, which I think might be relatable to some readers. School bake sales, birthday parties and other mom-related events regularly called for baked goods and, as a vegan, I always put my own spin on things. Now, I call baking my love language. For me, baking is all about express ing my love for others and I’m so happy I can share that with so many people.
MOMSTOWN:
What has been the greatest joy in creating
MAYA:
There are so many moments of joy that the last seven years. I think more than thing that offers other people opportunity, or developing new skills or even just special to me. I feel so much joy being personally and professionally.
MOMSTOWN:

MAYA:

AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE
YOUR DREAMS how to create come to life
WE ALL HAVE DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS.
TURNING ASPIRATIONS INTO REALITY, HOWEVER, TAKES MORE THAN DREAMING ABOUT THEM. PEOPLE WHO SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES AND AN ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS THEIR PLANS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ACHIEVE THEM.
WAYS TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOUR DREAMS COME TO LIFE:
01 BE AROUND PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT YOUR DREAMS. Find a community of like-minded individuals who will support and encour age you.
• Studies show that spending time with like-minded people increas es happiness, improves health, and lengthens life. When you feel happier and healthier, you’ll find it easier to create your best life.
• You’ll feel more confident knowing that there are people who be lieve in you, and you’ll be less likely to give up when things get tough.
• You’ll have someone to bounce ideas off of and who will give you feedback. You’ll find it easier to achieve your dreams with a support ive network.
• Create a space that supports your dreams. If your environment is cluttered and chaotic, it will be challenging to focus on your goals. Make sure your living space is clean and organized.
• Surround yourself with things that inspire you. When your envi ronment is positive, you’ll find it easier to achieve your dreams.
• Your space should reflect your goals. For example, if you’re los ing weight, get rid of the junk food in your pantry and stock up on healthy snacks. If you want to write a book, create a writing space where you can focus and be inspired.
• Your environment should make you feel good. When your environ ment aligns with your goals, staying motivated and achieving your goals is more manageable.
02 EMBRACE POSITIVE THINKING. One of the most important things you can do to achieve your dreams is to think positively. When you believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals, you’re much more likely to succeed. So surround yourself with posi tive affirmations and messages that inspire you.
• Use these ideas to boost your positive mindset. Start your day with a positive affirmation. Something as simple as “I can achieve anything I set my mind to” can make a big difference in your attitude.
• Write your goals and review them often. Seeing your goals in writ ing will help you stay focused and motivated.
• Create a vision board. A vision board is a collection of images, quotes, and other things that inspire you and remind you of your goals. Looking at your vision board will help to keep you on track.
• Positively talk to yourself. When you catch yourself thinking nega tive thoughts, reframe them in a positive light. For example, instead of thinking, “I’ll never be able to do this,” try telling yourself, “I can do this, and I will succeed.”
• Release past trauma. If you’ve experienced trauma in the past, it’s essential to deal with it healthily. Holding on to anger, resentment, and pain will only hold you back from achieving your dreams.
• Work with a therapist or counselor to help you process your emo tions and release the past. You’ll find it easier to achieve your goals when you let go of trauma.
03 TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. It’s essential to take care of your self physically, mentally, and emotionally if you want to achieve your dreams. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly.
• Take time for yourself to relax and de-stress. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’ll have the energy and focus to achieve your goals.
04 SET REALISTIC GOALS. It’s essential to set achievable goals. If your plans are too lofty, you’re setting yourself up for disappoint ment. Instead, break your big goals down into smaller, more man ageable pieces. Set a realistic timeline for your goals, and ensure that you’re taking the steps to achieve them.
05 CREATE A PLAN OF ACTION. Once you’ve set your goals, it’s crucial to create an action plan. Without a purpose, it will be chal lenging to achieve your goals. Decide what steps you need to take and put them into a timeline. Take action every day to move closer to your goals.
Creating an environment that supports your dreams is essential to achieving them. Start by taking care of yourself and setting realistic goals. Then, create a positive space for yourself and take action towards your goals. You’ll be one step closer to making your dreams a reality when you do these things.

tips
TO FINALLY FIND YOUR PASSION
IT’S EASY TO BE TOLD TO “FOLLOW YOUR PASSION.” THAT’S GREAT ADVICE, IF YOU COULD FIGURE OUT WHERE YOUR PASSIONS LIE.
There are many ways to find your passion, but it’s not necessarily easy. We tend to shy away from the things that are most meaningful to us. It seems counterintuitive, but it’s a little scary to live with that much enthusiasm.
Having a lot means that you can potentially lose a lot. It’s natural to want to play it safe and keep your 9 to 5 and your three weeks of vacation; however, few of us grow up wanting to work in an office, pushing papers around.
If you’re stuck in a life that bores you, the resistance somehow won along the way.
Luckily, you can reinvent your life. You can dare to be bold and differ ent. And you’ll most likely find life to be much more enjoyable!
02 Know your values
Your passion has to be in line with your values, or it can’t truly be a passion. Make a list of your values. Take your time and do a good job. You have more values than you think.
• Now, make a list of your favorite activities. It might be play ing the piano, drinking vanilla lattes, writing, and teaching judo. Again, take time to ensure that you cover all the bases.
• Be clear on your values and what you most enjoy. These will provide clues to your passion.
03 Look to your past
What did you want to do when you were a child? Why didn’t you follow through? Make a list of the things you enjoyed as a child. What did you dream about? What did you want to become and experi ence? Your passion might not be dramatically different from your interests as a child.
04 Use the power of your mind & a pen
Find an hour you can spend alone and in peace.
01 Expect the process to be challenging
When you determine your passion, you’re likely to feel elated at first. That feeling, however, might reverse itself before long. There is some part of you that will rebel against your spectacular idea.
• Hidden fears will come to the surface. These can include fears of failure, vulnerability, rejection, inadequacy, and exposure.
• The burden is on you to fight this resistance. If you refuse to give up the fight, your feelings of resistance will eventually die down.
Write at the top of a piece of paper, “My passion.”
Now just write whatever comes mind. If you think to yourself, “This is silly,” then write “This is silly.” Just put every thought you have down on paper.
• It may take 20 minutes or so to get all the refuse out of your mind before you get to legitimate ideas. Just keep writing.
• You’ll know when you’ve hit paydirt. Many people report the experience of tears running down their cheek when they finally write down the right idea. If you’re not sure, keep going.
• Listen to your gut. Your passion won’t be the result of a logical decision. It’s the result of intuition. Trust yourself.
Are you ready to live a life filled with passion? Are you ready to risk your current level of mediocrity?
MAKE A COMMITMENT TO YOURSELF TO FIND YOUR PASSION AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE.
TIME IS TICKING AWAY. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.
THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR YOU TO BE MOTIVATED AND ENGAGED.

In the world of design, what’s old inevitably becomes new again, and a similar pattern is inspiring today’s on-trend color palettes for home decor. The latest styles reflect reviving and comforting colors influenced by heritage and romance, lending to a look that is familiar in an individualistic way.
Whether living through the romance of rural lifestyles, the comfort of home or the nostal gia from far-off times, some of today’s most beloved design aesthetics celebrate the past, present and future while bring ing balance, hope and comfort for you and your family to em brace.
TIMELESS COLOR
Using color to evoke feelings and emotions is hardly new, but combining a carefully curated color palette with other design elements can allow you to create a look that pays homage to the past while breathing new life into your living space.
Reimagining classic, familiar tones allows you to achieve a design motif that is equal parts reminiscent and refreshing.
The Vintage Homestead Color Collection offers an effortless look that reveals the importance of being hopeful to find stability and balance,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Our 2023 Color Collection of the Year revives elements from the past that are perfectly paired with vintage, comfortable and classic colors.”
BLENDING PAST & PRESENT
Striking a balance between old and new can take many forms, as these styles show:
HERITAGE REVIVAL:
An interest in reviving the past is evident in design trends like a remerging appreciation of antiques and vintage elements, such oversized furniture and
traditional shapes. To capture this style, your design should focus on contrasting old and new for a mix-and-match look.
A cohesive color scheme can allow the various elements to stand on their own while working in harmony for an inten tional design. For example, the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Collection of the Year includes a combi nation of familiar tones that have been thoughtfully curated by design experts who borrow color and design concepts from the past for a hopeful future and a sense of belonging. Hues like Poet ry Plum and Hot Cocoa evoke warmth and depth, while moderate shades like Restrained Gold and Glamour offer fresh ways to incorporate mid-range neutrals. Meanwhile, soft tones like Natural Linen and Cool Beige offer subtle color for light er, brighter spaces.
MIXING AND MATCHING OF ERAS:
A new take on retro design is emerging in which eras are blended and new and old furnishing work side by side. To get this look, you’ll craft a space that mar ries historical and contemporary design, celebrating both old and new. To design for longevity, incorporate pieces that are ambiguous in era and stand the test of time.
VINTAGE HOMESTEAD:
Reviving design elements from the past with mixed patterns, classic shapes and vintage decor adds up to comfortable and comforting design. With this trend, prints and patterns encompass a range of styles, reinforcing how interiors con nect to fashion. Mixing classic elegance with sleek vintage shapes is refining the concept of polished comfort. To achieve the look, curate pieces in heritage shapes and patterns, along with retro accents. Be sure to incorporate vintage lighting and glass, as well.
A versatile color choice like Darkroom, the 2023 Color of the Year from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, is an alluring shade that is classic enough for her itage interiors but also modernly retro for a throwback-inspired aesthetic. It’s a neutral perfect for creating an eclectic yet modern look inside and out.
Get inspired to combine the past with the present for a comforting design that’s all your own at:

ATHE ABSOLUTE GUEST LIST
FOR MOST, THE HOLIDAYS ARE ABOUT CELEBRATING WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE & SHOULD BE AS SIMPLE AS FOLLOWING THE ABCs OF ENTERTAINING
If your past guest list didn't serve you well, meaning your guests took more energy than they gave, consider redefining who you really want at your table this sea son. Happy hosts enjoy their guests, and your servitude will be reflected in the joy of entertaining.
What do you want your environment to say? Is it filled with soft flannel and big hugs or jazzy cocktails and poppy music? Your hospitality is a venue to create a connecting experience for you and your guests.
BBE INTENTIONAL
Decide on a theme that reflects your traditions, your zaniness, and the meaning you graciously want to convey. Initiate engaging conversation by providing blank cards and invite your guests to write their favorite memory or greatest gratitude to share over dessert.
CCRAFT A THOUGHTFUL CENTERPIECE
This key visual element will tie your table setting together. Simple black and white buffalo checks, mini logs, stacked old books, fresh greenery with cran berries floating in clear votives evoke a homey cabin theme.
White linens, blue china and small kumquat trees with bases wrapped in burlap and orange ribbon can pro vide a simple yet elegant setting.
Going buffet style? Create drama with a centerpiece that sits well above the height of the food for added in terest, color and texture. This type of placement creates more real estate by allowing your food options to be placed vertically and horizontally. Stacking trays, and sturdy boxes tucked under linens can support appetiz ers of varying heights and help to maximize your food presentation. Ensure your tablecloth reaches the floor in this type of layout to create visual balance and scale.
For a more intimate experience, consider dining at the table where eye- to-eye contact and personal inter action will be important. I recommend a low-height centerpiece that doesn’t exceed 6-8” from the tabletop. This allows everyone to see each other, eases trans ference of food and helps to navigate the table setting with ease.
If you need inspiration, Pinterest and Etsy have a pleth ora of visual delights to suit your personal taste and decor. In a pinch, shop local, at TaDah on Cedros or better yet you can purchase a tablescape kit from Table Terrain online. Just pick, click and ship.
If you’re needing a more bespoke look and detailed col laboration for your celebration, seek out your favorite interior designer to help create that wow factor. Some designers charge a flat fee, provide a labeled mood board and shopping list with links to make the entire planning process ultra-easy for your special day.
If you’re hosting, thank you. It’s people like you who keep friends and family knit together.
