MEDITATE: A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts

7ELIMINATE CHEMICALS: Good rule of thumb, if you can't eat your skincare and cleaning products, don't use them.

9 BUILD YOUR MICROBIOME: Probiotics and prebiotics help to populate the gut with healthy bacteria. Some probiotic foods are sauerkraut, kombucha, yogurt, and kimchi. Prebiotic foods are garlic, onions, leeks, oats, and apple

10 VITAMIN D: Spend time in the sun. At least 15 minutes a day, or take a quality vita min D supplement. ACTIVATE Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing some thing nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead.

You see, you can have all the life plans you want; however, if you aren't feeling your best, it's tough to accomplish your goals and have the energy to inspire and impact others in your circle of influence. I wish I had enough time to sit down and share everything with you in this article, but I don't, so I've picked 10 things you can do today to start reclaiming your health and wellness and living with pas sion and purpose.

4 MOMSTOWN • SEP/OCT 2022

1 SLEEP & EXERCISE: Get adequate rest. 7-8 hours of sleep a night is required. Your cells rejuvenate at night, and your digestive system gets to calm down.

3 STAY HYDRATED: Drink at least eight 8 oz glasses of water a day. An added benefit, drinking warm lemon water in the morning.

4 BONE BROTH: This hot beverage helps heal the gut from past injury from stress, bad diet, and other illnesses.

5

STRETCH: While the most health-conscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds.

OIL PULLING: First thing in the morning, take 1 tsp full of organic coconut oil under the tongue and swish.

Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for busy families. Instead of waking with dread to face another hec tic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals.

6 TONGUE SCRAPING: Scrape your tongue twice a day after brushing with a stainless steel scraper.

MELINDA: Personally, I’m a mom of three and my husband and I have lived in San Marcos for 16 years. Professionally, I’ve been in marketing and public relations for over 20 years, the ma jority of that spent working with financial firms. Over the past several years, I have been able to begin to work on other pas sion projects, where I could combine my marketing experience and skills with my love for our community, networking and female business owners. This shift has al lowed me to help other women & moms achieve their entrepreneurial dreams and make a direct impact in our amazing community. Outside of that, I love work ing out, hiking, reading, dining all over North County and traveling.

MAGGIE SLATER & MELINDAFAMILY & FAMILY

STAAB

MAGGIE: I am a mom with six amazing andchildrenhave been blessed to live in, and start our parent company Aliferous Technology, in San Marcos. I believe that great ideas are born while living life's greatest moments. During my professional career, after years of seeing others encounter and also personally ex periencing roadblocks in the way of finance, social status and overall support, I knew it was time to break away from the norm and start a company in which new opportunities could be created for those who needed them most. I love music, theater, anything involving the ocean, travel, reading and more than anything, spending time with my huge nuclear and extended MOMSTOWN:family! How did you come up with the idea to start San Marcos VIP?

MAGGIE: San Marcos VIP was born out of a desire to support our community, especially local small businesses.

MOMSTOWN: We understand San Marcos VIP is new what kind of impact is it already having in the community? And, how do you see it impacting the community in the coming months?

It was, and still is, truly the most rewarding thing that either of us has ever done in our careers. And we still have so much more to do!

MELINDA: I think this is the best part for us! We launched our first VIP community smack in the middle of a global pandemic which, if anything, gave us that much more motivation to do what we could to help support local small businesses. From social me dia and marketing help, to grass roots campaigns, events (when we could), creating effective deals just for our communities and using the VIP app to showcase small busi nesses and the amazing owners behind them, we did it all! In a time when many small business owners weren’t sure if they’d be in business in 10 weeks, let alone 10 years, we were able to help dozens of local small businesses reach thousands of community members who were literally asking daily “where can I go locally to get ? I want to help support local!”

When COVID struck, we saw the need to support them more than ever! After witnessing the kindness of so many San Marcos residents’ hearts to shop local, we launched the tech as a vehicle to keep dollars in our community.

MOMSTOWN: What has been the greatest joy in creating this community tech and community outreach?

MOMSTOWN: We get that! Creative minds keep creating. So many moms struggle with too many great ideas and not enough time, support or resources to bring them all to frui tion. With that said, what tips would you offer to other moms who are thinking about turning their ideas into businesses?

MOMSTOWN: What would you like readers to do? Visit your website? Contact you? Just let us know.

MAGGIE: I would definitely recommend creating a solid vi sion and business plan/model. Solid structure with room for agility is my favorite way to suggest moving forward. More than anything, realize that there will be challenges, but the ability to tuck your efforts under your hat means that you don’t have to worry about succeeding or failing. One of my favorite quotes. “I win or I learn, but I never lose.”

SAN MARCOS VIP: To become a VIP San Marcos member, you can visit www.VIPShopLocal.com. You can also email either Maggie@VIPShopLocal.com or Melinda@VIPShop Local.com for information on current or future VIP communi ties, or to inquire about how VIP can help you to market and grow your own small business! "“Sometimes we can only find our true direc tion when we let the wind of change carry us."

MELINDA: Don’t overthink it. Don’t listen to the naysayers, even if sometimes that’s you. Go with your gut and just DO IT! Whether you fail or succeed, at least you were in the are na and choosing courage over comfort. Dare Greatly. (Thank you Brené Brown).

MAGGIE: Every day, we are meeting with folks who have true passion and great origin stories behind their brands. It’s a gift to be able to meet with them, learn about their needs, partner with them on their business goals and strat egies, and then share their stories with local consumers, helping them to build a strong, loyal customer base.

WhatMOMSTOWN:hasbeen the hardest part about building your MELINDA:business?

Every small business and/or startup will come with its own set of unique challenges. Time, budget, staff ing, procedural...we’ve had them all. But I’d say our main challenge is narrowing our focus down to just a handful of ideas. We both have creative brains and every conver sation about one item seems to end with half-a-dozen more ideas! Staying focused and following through with one item before we launch into the next is something that we’ve had to train our brains to do! Work in progress.

The world's oldest form of play: in a group, sit facing each other and begin telling a story one-word-at-a-time. Using the fairytale framework, the first person begins with the word “once”, and the next person says one word that builds on the first - in this way, each player contributes only one word, listen ing to the previous player, and together you build a cohesive story that is often surprising and hilarious. As you go around a couple of times, adding your cre ative brilliance, the story will find its natural end. This is a great way to practice listening to each other, creating something new as a team, and having fun with your word choices. The story you end up with will be nothing you could have Researchersimagined. and therapists have demonstrated that play increases certain “feel good” neurochemicals by adjusting brain chemistry. So, if you find yourself in a work funk, instead of reaching for that glass of wine, or coffee, reach into your toolbox and pull out one of the 4 types of play and have fun. For just two minutes a day, I am 100% confident you will up level your energy and be able to approach the challenges inevitable in any business with more resilience, less stress, and a whole lot more fun. For more information on applied improvisation techniques that boost creativity, communication and overall joy, contact Vanessa Elle Wilde.

03 Object Pick up any object, like a pen, off your desk and in 30 seconds come up with as many uses as you can. Don’t stop until the timer goes off. When you need a perspective shift, or find a solution to a long-standing problem, this is a great way to tap into your convergent thinking abilities.

02 Movement

Engage in interactive games like cards or charades You can also build something together. This can include cooking or gardening, horseback riding, surfing or hiking together. All things you can do with friends, family and colleagues.

10 MOMSTOWN • SEP/OCT 2022 I often joke that I have a high play-drive - meaning, for me to feel fulfilled in life and work, elements of play are necessary. Now, this doesn’t mean I’m be ing silly or frivolous all day, but certainly there is room for light heartedness, creativity, and thinking outside the norm. I’ve even turned down contracts that I know will stifle my playfulness and creativity. World class business schools around the country, such as Duke, MIT, UCLA, and Stanford require at least one applied improvisation course. They under stand the business isn’t linear. It’s filled with the unexpected and it requires us to shift our perspective and actions, sometimes on a dime. Equally, they understand the value of play and the benefits of tapping into the imagination to help solve problems, come up with fresh new ideas, and build stronger, more cohesive teams. To build your tolerance for the unexpected and handle challenges while maintaining your sanity, play is a powerful tool. Here are four types of play you can use anytime, anywhere to boost your creativity, energy and productivity: Play your wayto success PLAY ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS. IN FACT, IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS, PLAY IS A VITAL TOOL FOR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY, TEAMBUILDING, BOOSTING CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE IDEAS, AND STRESS REDUCTION.

This month MomsTown is raising a glass to the founders of Dancing Daughters Whiskey. Two brilliant local Southern California women, Kelly Nolan (a San Elijo Hills mom) and her cousin, Jessica Steelberg wanted to create a unique new whiskey that evokes the 1920s glamour, sophistication, and just a little 1920s speakeasy spirit. We wanted to know more about their journey and get their advice for anyone dreaming of starting something new, so we spoke with Kelly.

Considering I recently launched a liquor company, I would probably choose Bethenny Frankel. She was the first female entrepreneur that I witnessed having huge success launching her own liquor brand. She was so smart to use the reality show to create her own empire.

I would tell my 18 year old self that every setback can actually be a setup for success. I was devastated not to get into my first college choice and looking back now, I see that I ended up exactly where I was meant to be (UCSB grad...Go Gauchos!)

When I was little I thought I wanted to be a lawyer, but as I got older I wanted to work in the entertainment industry. I thought I would end up in production or costume design because I was fascinated by how movies and TV shows were made. I love walking and hiking the trails around San Elijo. There is a 2.5 mile loop near my house that I do all the time. My brain is always going a million miles a minute, so it’s the perfect way to pause my crazy routine and just breathe!

My dad gave me a copy of “Manifest Your Destiny” by Wayne Dyer when I was in my 20’s and there is a quote from that book that has always stayed with me: “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.” It’s helped me choose a gratitude mindset whenever I am going through a difficult time.

As a teenager, I was interest ed in everything from fashion to design, from architecture to photography. In Brazil, I ma jored in advertising and marketing and I also have a Master's degree. I worked in the communications field before moving to the US. I painted only as a hobby and used to go to classes with my mom. It wasn't until I moved here that I started selling my art and only about two years ago that I quit my part-time job and became a full-time artist. For all these years, I have been taking several classes, here and in Brazil. I still love to learn new processes and techniques! But I’m also in spired by travel, music, and my lovely son. I love painting because it keeps me aware of the moment and it brings me joy and peace. Acrylic is my medium of choice and I love nothing more than turning the music on and “dancing” around my canvas. Seeing the work come alive is a feeling I can’t put into words. Think back throughout your career. Who has impacted your career journey? Now, let’s turn the question toward you. What have you learned that’ll positively influence your next workplace? A few examples I’ve seen in my clients: a teacher in product communications carried a wealth of learning and development acumen that fellow teammates didn’t know, building a well-rounded peo ple-serving department. Another, a project manager turned change management consul tant, contributed deep organizational strategy to her new role allowing broad change ini tiatives to run smoother than ever. An added confidence booster is linking your experience with a need within your next role. What does the team/company need? How can you lever age your knowledge and expertise to deliver? Be Adaptable

Your One-of-a-kind Value My response is directly from a conversation with a head recruiter at a reputable global communications company on the Great Places to Work lists. He said the company LOVES hiring candidates with diverse professional backgrounds because their ideas bring unique perspec tives that improve operations. Time and time again, I have heard and witnessed widespread experiences and skills that can positively influ ence your next role. Have you embraced change throughout your career? You’re trending right now. A survey by Prudential found that 20% of people have changed careers since the pandemic’s start. The stigma of past generations to begin and end your career with the same company all in the name of loyalty is gone. We know now that there’s little growth in professional stagnation. An added benefit to an eclectic career is you’ve likely had many people witness and absorb the benefits of your work. Use this to your advan tage. Strive to Positively Impact Others

Starting with today, regardless of anything in your past, take the time to brain dump your personal values and how you want to be perceived. Then summarize those thoughts into 1-2 sentences to shape your per sonal mission statement that aligns with your personal brand and goals.

The truth is, every one of us has a personal brand–whether we are CEOs, employees, stay-at-home moms or students. If we want to influ ence how others think about our products, services, community role or the value that we can provide to them, we must first make sure that our words, actions, social media and in-person social interactions align with how we want to be perceived. We cannot control the opinions or perceptions of others, but we can control the messages that we put out into the Universe that will inev itably shape those opinions and perceptions–and build our personal brand over time.

Nothing speaks more to your integrity, authenticity and reputation than the impact that you have on those around you. Come from a place of good intent. “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”

Make sure that the brand that you want to create for yourself is reflect ed in everything that you share on social. Unlike traditional branding, our personal brand is not something that we craft, perfect and push out to the masses. Your brand is a majority perception that others have of you based on your words, actions, expe rience and the overall messaging and “vibe” that you project.

Seek input from someone in your field or community you admire, is successful and has experience. Ask them to give their perspective on your brand, your approach, your messaging, etc. The relationship can range from a simple one-off conversation to weekly/monthly account ability and networking meetings. 1 BE INTENTIONAL Ruby Villarreal, a preschool teacher of nearly 30 years, suggests meeting with your child’s teacher before the first day of school to introduce your child and your family. Share your child’s previous school experience, likes and dislikes as well as any home issues that may impact your child’s mood or behavior, such as a new sibling, recent move or divorce. Raise any con cerns you may have – no matter how big or small. Your child is the teach er’s priority too, and he or she might have some tips and tricks to help you help your child.

3 PLAY A 'WHAT IF' GAME Cooking provides a variety of opportunities to work on math skills. For Help school-age children build a growth mindset by problem-solving responses to common friendship issues. Ask your child “What would you do if…?” and help him or her practice responses. Thinking of responses ahead of time gives your child a rehearsed playbook to choose from in the moment. The more he or she practices these responses, the less you will see unwanted behaviors such as yelling or hitting. By giving children the autonomy to choose their own responses, you demonstrate your trust in them, which can give children a powerful sense of their own abilities to act maturely.

1 TURN TRANSITIONS INTO GAMES

THESE THREE SKILLS FAMILIES CAN TEACH THEIR CHILDREN BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS TO HELP BUILD FRIENDSHIPS

SUCCESS friendship skillshow

Making a game out of stressful transitions can help both you and your child reframe your mindsets and reduce stress. Asking your child “Can you hop like a bunny while you get your school things together?” or playing a listen ing game like “Simon Says” can help your child develop executive function skills such as impulse control. You could also give him or her choices. For example, tell your child “You can put your shoes on yourself or I can help you,” which lets him or her feel a sense of autonomy and control when choosing the desired solution.

Drop off and pick up times can sometimes be too busy for more than a “hi” or “bye.” Ask your child’s teacher how he or she likes to communicate, and share your preference, too.

3 MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH LITTLE CHATS

During pick up or drop off, try to leave time for a brief conversation. This could be a quick chat about something fun your child did over the week end or why he or she might be having a tough day.

“Learning is a partnership between families and school,” said Quiana Smith, a 15-year prekindergarten teacher. “Your child will be excited about school and learning when he or she knows you’re excited about it, too.”

“The need to practice impulse control and self-regulation skills will remain a challenge throughout childhood as executive function skills continue to de velop into a person’s mid-20s,” Peters said. “It’s not that children don’t ‘know better,’ it’s more their brains are still learning these vital social and emotional Buildingskills.” these social skills now can help your children start the school year ready to learn and grow.

“Socialseen.and emotional skills are crucial to a child’s academic success, but they aren’t inherent,” said Carter Peters from KinderCare’s inclusion services team. “Teachers tell us again and again that starting the school year with a grasp on social emotional learning is just as important as knowing academic concepts. Children who are struggling to manage their emotions and transition into the classroom may not be able to focus on CONSIDERacademics.”

One thing younger children often struggle with is the concept of sharing. Adults can forget that to young children sharing implies giving something up, Peters said. If your child struggles to share, try introducing the concept of taking turns: “It’s Mariah’s turn for the slide. When she’s done then you can go,” for example. Help your child practice how to have conversations with playmates about taking turns.

2 COMMUNICATE ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS

A new school year can feel like uncharted territory for children, parents and teachers alike as they learn new things and meet unfa miliar faces. Building a relationship with your child’s teacher can help create a positive school experience for everyone involved. Plus, teachers who connect with their classroom families help families feel seen, heard and represented in the classroom.

CONSIDER THESE THREE TIPS TO HELP FAMILIES CREATE CONNECTIONS AND BUILD TRUST AND COLLABORATION WITH THEIR CHILD’S TEACHER

♦ POTS IN THE SAME COLOR hue help to create a consol idated look and allows the plants to take center stage.

TEXTURE AND CONTRAST: Plantings don’t always have to have flowers. You may want to consider plants that have varying leaf size, texture, and contrast like chartreuse, dark velvet purple, and variegated leaves. Consider layering plants. A good guide for potted plants is to identify a tall thriller, filler, and a spiller. This guarantees height, fills in blank areas, creates texture and extends the visual vignette with a spiller.

♦ KNOW YOUR ZONE. San Diego is zone 8, 9 & 10. Each of these zones are distinct for your plant’s success.

Fall-ing

♦ BE WATER WISE. If possi ble, consider drip irrigation to minimize water evaporation.

♦ MONARCH BUTTERFLIES need us. Consider a milkweed plant that will invite them to propagate, stay and play.

CONSIDER YOUR SUN, SOIL, AND WATERING NEEDS: There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a plant only to have it look like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree 30 days out. My fav go-to book is The New Sunset Garden Book; It will help define micro ecosystems in the yard and the nuances from the coast to the inland areas about your future plant’s Oncesuccess.you’ve defined your planting conditions, you can now identify what will grow in the space. Follow these basic prin ciples and you’ll have an area that will provide the impactful wow you might be seeking from that tad bit of planning.

A COLOR THEME: My go-to is red and I’m in love with double headed geraniums for their hardiness, ability to rebloom, and lasting color. They are ideal for every holiday and are especially beautiful when combined with the soft lacey leaves of a Dusty Miller. Red’s color complement is green, which makes this color an automatic stand out in the garden. Not a fan of red, consider white, a classy neutral that illuminates in the evening light.

LAUNDRY ROOM— Getting motivated to do chores like laundry is easy when you have a beautiful setting for getting to work. Introducing pops of color in nontraditional places, like the cabinetry, adds a high-end elegance. Water-inspired and earthy hues like Midtown Matte Tide water or Arcadia Chiffon Cypress are perfect for the laundry space. Both are options in Well born Cabinet, Inc.’s Aspire Series, which features concealed hinges with self-close functionality and matching interiors for a high-class look, even when the doors are open for business.

NOT ALL GREAT THINGS COME IN BIG PACKAGES, AND HOME UPGRADES ARE AN EXAMPLE OF THE TRUTH IN THIS WISDOM. UNEXPECTED, SMALLER SPACES MAY NOT GET THE SAME ATTENTION AS HIGH-TRAFFIC AREAS LIKE KITCHENS, BATHROOMS AND LIVING AREAS, BUT THEIR IMPACT CAN BE JUST AS POWERFUL. Get inspired to make improvements to the lesser-used areas of your home with these tips from the home decorating experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.:

ENTRYWAY It’s the impression that welcomes guests into your home, so even if the space is small, your entryway warrants some TLC. Focus on making it open and inviting by remov ing any unnecessary furnishings. Some functional storage, like a bench with integrated coat hooks, can serve a practical purpose, and if you have the space, some built-in cabinetry with an eye-catching countertop can incorporate stylish storage.

HOME UPGRADE IDEAS SURPRISING unexpected spaces

CLOSET— A cluttered closet may not be the first thing a guest notices, but it’s a space you visit daily. Improving the organizational features can streamline your morning routine and put you in a more positive frame of mind to start each day. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to closet design, but using cabinetry in place of open shelving and rods lends a more luxurious feel. Plan for adequate hanging and closed storage, and if space allows, be sure to plan for shoes and accessories since these items can easily contribute to a closet’s disarray.

18 MOMSTOWN • SEP/OCT 2022

GUEST BATHROOM— Swapping out a tired vanity and countertop is a relatively affordable upgrade that can completely change the style of a secondary bathroom. Be sure to also update the fixtures for a more contemporary look and, if budget allows, replace the flooring. Finish the project with a fresh coat of paint in a light, airy shade and add new textiles and a few decora tive touches to complete the job. Find more ideas for updating unexpected spaces in your home at Wellborn.com.

MINI BAR— If you fear you don’t have room for a mini bar, you may be surprised. Reimagining a larder cabinet, like the ones Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers in 30-, 33-, 36- and 42-inch widths, can create an instant bar out of just about any wall space where you can fit a cabinet. Install it as a coffee bar or traditional bar, or add the optional Appliance Pullout shelf for more versatility.

PAPER TOWEL PULLOUT Keep paper towels hidden but close by hiding them in a pullout cabinet such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s 12-inch-wide model, which features a built-in paper towel holder and bottom shelf ideal for organizing cleaning products. There’s also a space be hind the paper towels that’s perfect for storing sponges and other kitchen supplies.

DRAWER DIVIDERS While you can find many after-market options to organize the insides of your drawers and cabinets, choosing organizers designed to work seamlessly with your cabi netry creates a more polished look (and saves the headaches of measuring and guesstimating the fit). Tray dividers are useful for sorting cookie sheets and baking pans, while you can find dividers in a variety of heights to match drawers below the oven or where you store your cut lery. Another option that serves a similar purpose is pegs, which keep fragile items from shifting when drawers are opened or closed.

HIDEAWAY STORAGE SPACES— One feature that enhances virtually any space is more storage. Having convenient places to tuck away all your stuff makes rooms feel more open and inviting. Hidden storage solutions are often better because you can enjoy the functionality they add to the space without interrupting your design aesthetic.

Here are some clever ideas for keeping necessary items tucked out of sight but within easy BUILT-INreach:STEP STOOL If you love the look of tall cabinets but struggle to reach the top shelves, a practical addition is a hidden step ladder in a pullout caddy. Specially designed lad ders that fold down extra narrow and feature nonslip rubber treads make this a handy addition you’ll reach for again and again.

PANTRY— Guests may not find themselves in your pantry very often, but you likely use this space every day. Transform your pantry for heightened utility in simple ways like using clear plastic bins for small boxed foods or stylish wicker baskets to hide away snacks. For a more permanent solution, take advantage of unused space on the back of the pantry door with thin shelves for items like seasoning packets and smaller canned goods.

Preheat oven to 400 F. Coat large baking dish with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. In large bowl, mix quinoa, ground beef, egg, carrot, onion, ketchup, garlic, soy sauce, salt, pepper, oregano and thyme.

Form mixture into walnut-sized meatballs and arrange on prepared baking sheet. Bake approximately 20 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Use taco seasoning or chili powder in place of Cajun seasoning. Use arugula or baby spinach instead of kale. Prepare quinoa according to package directions.

Spoon marinara sauce over top then sprinkle with cheese; bake 5 minutes, or until sauce is hot and cheese is melted. Remove from oven and sprinkle with parsley.

TIP: Make sliders by slicing dinner rolls in half and placing meatballs on bottom halves. Cover with top halves of rolls and serve.

Consider making these ahead of time then reheating at mealtime. Now you're saving time AND money!

AVOID UNNECESSARY PURCHASES Similar to walking past the snack section, pay careful attention to how often you load your cart with items from spe cial stands and end-of-aisle displays. STORE FOOD PROPERLY While it may not directly pertain to shopping, learning how to store the foods you do purchase can help them stay fresh longer, which can help cut down on trips to buy more. Add some tortilla chips for a little extra crunch!
