Can you share your story of how you came to settle in Jamul? What were the key factors or events that led you to this community?
In 2003, Steve and I were looking for an area in San Diego where we could afford to purchase our first home. I asked some co-workers if there were any hidden spots that might be gems that not everyone knows about, that was affordable (given San Diego standards), and was conveniently located to commute downtown and to the East County mountains, since I was working in Descanso at the time. I was told to check out Rancho San Diego. We found a small home for sale and attended the Open House. We loved the area and made an offer right away. Nine years later in 2012, we were ready for a bigger property that had space, privacy, and tranquility – we found all of this just a couple miles away in beautiful Jamul. We live in a wonderful equestrian neighborhood where each home sits on an acre of land.
What are some of the most significant changes you have witnessed in the community since you’ve been in Jamul?
Over the past ten years, I have seen Developers attempt to build large housing and industrial projects that are inappropriate for Jamul and the community’s charming, rustic character. Two large projects led me to organize community members to challenge these applications to the County. It has taken many years, but the StopCottonwoodSandMine.org
civic, non-profit organization I began in 2017, has been successful in keeping a proposed industrial sand mine at Cottonwood Golf Club from happening so far! Jamul citizens are committed to protecting the health and well-being of their community. They are invested in their environment, schools, recreational and agricultural open-space, Wildlife Nature Preserve, Water Conservation Garden, Sweetwater River, and so many other treasures this community has to offer.
If someone was visiting the area for the first time, what’s one place you would recommend they visit? We have, over the years, had many friends and family visit this area for the first time. I often take them to two of our local wineries, Granite Lion Cellars and Rustic Ridge. Our visitors are so impressed with the mountain views, surrounding nature, inviting hosts, and, of course, also the wine. They usually can’t believe we drove only a few miles for such a fun, casual experience.
What aspects of the community do you value the most, and how have they impacted your life?
Nature surrounds us in Jamul and it’s fascinating! In one morning, you might see Coyotes, a Bobcat, Red Tail Hawks, Barn Owls, and Hummingbirds in your backyard. It makes me stop and truly appreciate wildlife. I am equally grateful for the people in our community, who support one another and are always willing to lend a helping
hand. We have gone through more than one wildfire emergency in the time we’ve been in Rancho San Diego/ Jamul, and it has been heartening to see that the community always comes together to assist anyone who needs it.
If you were to describe the spirit or character of Jamul to someone who has never visited, how would you describe it?
Jamul is a beautiful rural community surrounded by mountain vistas that is only a mere 20 miles from downtown San Diego and the ocean. It exudes rustic charm, yet it is conveniently close to everything you need. After living in the area for over 20 years, I can say Jamul is a treasured oasis.

In a heartening win for environmental preservation, the San Diego environmental community is abuzz with excitement over a landmark land purchase that will safeguard a significant stretch of undeveloped land. Nestled between Proctor Valley in Jamul and Chula Vista, this acquisition encompasses nearly 1,300 acres of the pristine coastal sage scrub habitat, earmarked for permanent preservation.
This conservation success story unfolds with the signing of a sale agreement aimed at preventing the transformation of this tract into a sprawling urban development, which would have further extended Chula Vista’s footprint. The transaction, valued at an impressive $60 million, is a strategic move to protect a vital piece of Southern California’s natural heritage. The funds for this purchase are pooled from several key contributors: the California Wildlife Conservation Board with a $30 million investment, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security contributing $25 million, and both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Nature Conservancy adding $2.5 million each.
