Summer is the perfect time to enhance your home's curb appeal and increase its value. Here are some practical tips to make your property stand out in the Escondido market.

Lush Landscaping

Maintaining a beautiful lawn and garden can significantly boost your home's first impression. Keep your lawn green and trimmed, add colorful flowers and plants, and prune bushes and trees for a tidy look. A wellkept garden not only enhances curb appeal but also creates a welcoming atmosphere for potential buyers.

Exterior Maintenance

Summer is ideal for tackling exterior maintenance tasks. Power wash your home's exterior and driveway to remove dirt and grime. Consider painting or touching up any faded or peeling areas to give your home a fresh look. Additionally, clean and repair gutters and downspouts to ensure they are in good working order.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Creating inviting outdoor living spaces can make your home more attractive. Set up a cozy patio or deck area with comfortable seating, and add outdoor lighting for evening ambiance. Highlighting features like fire pits or garden beds can also enhance the overall appeal of your property.

Eco-Friendly Upgrades

Consider making eco-friendly upgrades to your home. Installing energy-efficient windows and doors can save on energy costs and appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. Using drought-resistant plants in your landscaping can help conserve water, while solar panels can offer long-term savings and add value to your home.

Staging for Summer

Staging your home for the summer season can make a big difference. Use light, airy decor inside your home to create a fresh, inviting atmosphere. Keep windows clean to let in natural light, and add summery touches like fresh flowers and fruit bowls to brighten up your space.

Mom HOW MADE IT

Nothing screams summer louder and tastier than ice cream. A local family is turning their love of ice cream into a thriving business. As the Wynn family is preparing to open the third location of Wynston’s Ice Cream, we had a chance to catch up with the very busy owner, Sarah Wynn. We started our conversation by asking Sarah how her family started this very sweet journey.

MOMSTOWN

Please give us a quick introduction; tell us a little about yourself and how Wynston’s Ice Cream got its start?

SARAH

We are a family who loves to talk about food and travel and find joy in sitting around the table sharing that with friends and family.

I grew up in the jungles of Brazil as a missionary kid and met Chris as a teenager when I moved back to Michigan, where both our families still reside. Having moved a lot for Chris’ career in the video game industry, we were anxious

to settle down. Almost nine years ago, we finally landed in San Elijo Hills.

Over the years, Chris developed a passion for crafting ice cream flavors for dinner parties with friends and neighbors. And that quickly developed into making pints in the garage for neighbors and then into churning in a coffee shop kitchen. While Chris perfected his ice cream techniques and recipes, I was so excited to help create an

development in San Marcos. Before we knew it, we had loyal regulars, new friends, and a buzzing supportive community. We were ready to expand! That early success led us to where we are today.

MOMSTOWN

What newsworthy events have recently taken place?

SARAH

We are a family-friendly, community-focused small business and our biggest accomplishments really fall into two categories:

1) Success and recognition for the quality of our ice cream.

2) Giving back to our community.

ice cream experience that felt creative and joyful.

We first opened a small scoop shop in a small 120 sq. ft. space in Union CoWork in the North City

We are so proud of the achievements we’ve had when we put our ice cream to the test. For the last two years, we have competed in the National Ice Cream Convention and walked away with several awards (including a Blue Ribbon for our FTW Chocolate and a Red Ribbon for our Old Reliable Vanilla) and our favorite “Flavor of the Year” for our Parmesan Apricot. We will be heading off with new flavors to submit again this November, so please send all the good vibes with us.

And in giving back to our community, we’ve been able to have an impact and pour back love into our local schools and other great causes. This includes our annual participation in the

Scoop San Diego Ice Cream Festival scoopsandiego.org, where proceeds benefit The Berry Good Foundation. Last year the ice cream festival was able to raise $40,000 for the San Diego Food Bank.

We also love to partner with incredible local collaborators like: Courage Whiskey, Newtopia Cyder, Obrigaderia, as well as participate in fun local events like a recent Movie Night! For all of our events and fun collaborations, please go to our new page at wynstons.com/scoop-shop-events

MOMSTOWN

Starting a new business can be difficult. What has been the greatest struggle in getting your business started and/or growing the business?

SARAH

The challenge at the beginning was a lot of logistical and physical hard work. While we had long dreamed of entrepreneurship, the reality of owning a small business is harder than it looks.

We opened our business in 2019 and had the same struggles as many of our restaurant industry colleagues in surviving the pandemic and now the lingering effects of enduring incredibly high increases in our costs of labor and goods. While the whole industry is suffering, I can’t help but feel we are disappointing customers when we must raise prices to accommodate.

MOMSTOWN

What story(ies) can you share that give you the confidence to know you’ve made the right decision in going for your dreams?

SARAH

Every time I see a group or family come into the shop to gather, meet old friends, spend time, and celebrate or encourage each other after a hard day, there is something in my soul that literally lights up. It is the dream that we hoped for beyond making really good ice cream. It was the dream to create a space that brings joy and happiness that cements in the hearts of our customers as part of their lives. I want our customers to have memories they look back on and can say, Remember that time at Wynston’s? Or Mom, I’m back in town from college, we HAVE to go to Wynston’s! — where one scoop can transport you back to someplace special in your mind and bring a smile to your face.

MOMSTOWN

SARAH

We also just signed a lease for a 3rd location in Torrey Pines Highlands off of the merge 56 area, coming late 2024.

MOMSTOWN

What are the future plans for the business?

SARAH

We are planning to open a location in Torrey Pines Highlands later this year.

We are always working on improving the Wynston’s customer experience, as that is the part I am most passionate about! Customers should always feel valued and enjoy their time with us, and the ice cream should always exceed expectations!

MOMSTOWN

It’s clear that you are fulfilling a dream. What advice would you share with others about the importance of pursuing their passions/dreams in life?

SARAH

What I can tell you clearly is this...you won’t regret trying.

Learning to take even that first step is courageous and can be challenging. I believe that if you can learn to take those steps for something you believe you are passionate about, dream about and imagine success in, then you will find the fortitude when you need to take the steps towards your dreams even when it’s scary.

MOMSTOWN

Finally, what are your best-selling flavors? And, what’s your favorite?

SARAH

Our current best-selling flavors are Midnight Munchies and Cookies In Cream. Our classics (ALWAYS menu), are top sellers and we churn those flavors daily. The Midnight Munchies is having a rare appearance and is selling out quickly every time it’s made. Check out all of our inspiration stories and flavor descriptions at our website wynstons.com

RESIDENTIAL REFRESH

Your home is an expression of you, your personality and your lifestyle. When it comes to personalizing your home’s aesthetic, try leaning into your senses to inspire change within your space.

Inspiration can be found everywhere around you from taking cues from Mother Nature to “shopping” your own house or, with a little help from Air Wick, finding and incorporating your home’s signature scent.

GIVE YOURSELF A RESIDENTIAL REFRESH WITH THESE TIPS:

Rearrange Living Spaces

Breathing fresh air into a room doesn’t always require a complete overhaul, or even any construction or DIY projects. Sometimes all you need is a little rearranging. Shifting furniture to better suit your needs or let more natural light in can significantly improve the space’s aesthetic.

Additionally, the items you currently own are most reflective of your style; try “shopping” your own house by repurposing items from other areas or rooms to give them a fresh feel. When decor pieces are overused in one spot, they may feel brand new in a different space. These are practical and cost-effective tactics to create a new and inviting space for both you and any guests entering your home.

Introduce Plants & Greenery

PERSONALIZED TOUCHES FOR YOUR HOME

Update Colors

Introducing color to a room can transform its look, and the scale of change is up to you. You might repaint the entire space, simply paint an accent wall or even just spruce up a corner with a pop of color. Incorporating accessories or decorative elements with new colors can also create some variety, such as including pops of season-inspired colors in artwork and textiles.

Switch Out Light Fixtures

A room’s lighting is an important detail for personalizing the type of mood and ambiance you are trying to achieve. Swapping out light fixtures for dimmers, for example, can create a brand new atmosphere, allowing you to adjust the light to the time of day and for your intended experience. Consider updating old lighting fixtures with new ones to enhance the presence of natural light or changing the bulb wattage to further impact the mood.

When sourcing your design inspiration from nature, adding greenery is an inherent way to bring in the beauty and freshness of the great outdoors. To personalize your home with plants, visit a nursery or local flower shop and choose ones that are appealing to you based on their shape, color or size. Live plants offer multiple benefits, like naturally purifying the air, and studies have shown numerous therapeutic benefits of spending time with nature. Designing with natural elements, like house plants or flowers, can bring a sense of serenity into your home.

Find Your “Scentscape"

A home upgrade rooted in nature includes more than just what you can see and feel, it also includes engaging the sense of smell. One of the latest home decor trends, “scentscaping,” is growing in popularity as a way for individuals to enhance the ambiance of their homes through tailored scent.

“Scent is an often-overlooked aspect of design,” says Egypt Sherrod, HGTV personality who is both an interior designer and real estate broker, and Air Wick partner. “People tour homes and experience spaces with all their senses. It adds a new layer to home personalization, as an authentic fragrance experience often heightens the aura of your space beyond its physical layout. Scentscaping is the perfect way to add a bespoke vibe for your home that reflects your personal style, in turn creating a welcoming atmosphere.”

With innovative devices designed to deliver carefully blended scents like Air Wick’s Advanced Plug-in Scented Oil, you can enjoy long-lasting pulses of scents inspired by nature in the comfort of your home for up to 60 days on low setting. With anti-fading technology, an on-demand boost button and adjustable intensity settings, you’ll notice the fragrances from the first drop to the last.

Embrace the Scent of the Season

If you tend to make frequent edits to your home’s design, you may also find the idea of experimenting with different fragrances appealing. A short-term scent can be ideal for seasonal swaps, like trading fresh spring blooms for sweet summer citrus, for example. Lasting for up to 45 days on low setting, Air Wick’s Essential Mist Diffuser fills the room with a gentle, fragrant mist with natural essential oils so you can set it and forget it. Adjustable settings are included on the device, and the cordless and portable design allow it to blend seamlessly into any home decor.

BONUS: Scentscaping

to give your home a personalized style

Achieving your perfect scentscape begins with nature-inspired fragrances, including classics like White Sage + Mahogany, Lavender + Waterlily and Eucalyptus + Wild Berry. If sweeter scents are your preference, consider enticing blends like Pink Watermelon + Mimosa, Lush Honeysuckle + Raspberry or Hawaiian Guava + Tropical Flowers.

To establish a one-of-a-kind scentscape for your home, start with these tips from Sherrod:

1. Identify your scent preferences, whether leaning toward citrus, spicy, fruity, floral or woody notes.

2. Consider the scent’s intensity and the scent level you and your guests find pleasing.

3. If you plan on creating room-specific scents, or want to use different fragrances in each room, consider how these scents interact with one another to harmonize the scents with contrasts that add dimension.

4. Consider rotating your seasonal scents to freshen up your home and bring new energy to your space at different times of the year.

5. Maintain a scent balance so different scents do not overpower each other. Rather, create a soft and pleasing aroma that establishes inviting spaces throughout your home.

TIPS for KEEPING KIDS

SAFE AROUND WATER THIS SUMMER

Summer is here! Therefore, it’s imperative we be reminded of how to keep our children safe while enjoying our time in the water. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death for children 1 to 4 years old. Learning to swim can reduce a child’s risk of drowning by 88%. With these eight tips you and your family can enjoy your pool time safely.

1. Install gate/wireless alarm

A safety gate, electric pool cover or a wireless alarm in the pool is a must for pool owners. Lifesaver Pool Fence is a great option for most backyards. An automatic pool cover or an alarm that detects movement in the water, like the Mylo Virtual Lifeguard System are other options if your yard can’t accommodate a pool safety fence. Companies like Poolsafe.com offer various options in securing your pool. Always double check all doors are locked and secured when leaving the pool area.

2. Swim Lessons

Enroll your child in swim lessons. Look for swim lessons that teach respect of the water and at a minimum how get to the side. The best and most effective lessons are ones that teach your child to swim with their face in the water and how to roll onto their back and float.

3. Become Infant/

Toddler CPR Certified

Rescue breathing and compressions are very different when dealing with small children. Learn the proper technique, infant vs. child vs. adult. redcross. com/takeacourse/cpr has online options as well as in-person classes available in the San Marcos area.

4. Life Jackets

is recommended, and for children 30 to 50lbs Hyperlite HO Child Pursuit Vest allows children to safely swim in a streamline position with their face in the water.

5. Teach Your Child to Respect Water

Teach your child to ask permission before entering the water. If they are jumping to you require them to say “Mommy, are you ready? Can I swim to you?” Respond with eye contact, “Yes.” If they jump in without permission pull them out of the pool and say “No, you need to wait until I say it’s okay to come into the pool.” It’s important to establish these rules right from the start. Teach your child to respect the water and your rules.

When on a boat or near moving water children should wear US Coastguard Life Jackets. There are several life jackets on the market. Hyperlite jackets tend to fit children better than most. For toddlers (under 30lbs), Hyperlite Toddler Indy CGA Life Jacket

6. Bathing Suit/ Rashguard Colors Matter

Avoid white or pastel colored bathing suits. They blend in too well with churned up water and lighter pool bottoms. Think bright and contrasting colors when picking out pool clothing/swimsuits.

7. Put Away ALL Toys/Floats

Remove all toys from the pool and deck area after you’re done swimming and put them away. Leaving them out in sight only entices children to go toward the water.

8. Always have Extra Eyes on the Pool/Water

When having a party designate a “water watcher” or hire a lifeguard to help you keep an eye on the water/swimmers.

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ?

A couple of years ago, we featured a couple of local moms who started a retail shop out of a North County garage. The company is called Bette, and it features swimsuit coverups, beach bags and coastal-inspired jewelry.

Fast forward to today, and the brand has a new owner.

We asked Bette’s new owner, Laurie, to send us an update on what inspired the transition and we just had to know, “What’s going on with Bette?”

Laurie:

What happens when you’re in your early 50’s, your kids start to fly the coop, and you’re bored with your career?

You buy a company, of course!

In all seriousness, I had a great 25-ish year run as a marketer, but realized I wasn’t actually doing something that I truly loved anymore. I knew it was time for a change. And I knew I wanted to do something with women, for women. Something to help uplift women and make them feel great about themselves.

Fast forward to a serendipitous phone call one morning with

local stores like

and Swirl’s three boutiques. I also sell quite a bit to boutiques around the U.S. The demand is there and the quality is on point. Building on that, expect to see Bette in more shops around San Diego and Orange County this summer as I continue to bring the brand into more physical stores. I’m also scheduled to do a pop-up at Macy’s to build brand awareness and see if their clientele is a good fit for Bette.

I’ve learned quickly that selling clothes online as a small brand isn’t quite as easy as it is to sell in stores. So my 18-year-old daughter (who has taken multiple fashion design classes) is helping me improve the online merchandising this summer. And my 16-yearold son (who sews his own designs without patterns) is helping me with new prototypes. They’re both extremely talented. I’m very lucky to be able to bring them into this exciting adventure with me.

the then-owner of Bette. (Bette is a small coastal lifestyle brand that carries fun and flirty beach cover ups, caftans, bags and accessories.) We quickly clicked and our goals aligned. A few months later in March of 2024, I was the new, proud owner of Bette!

I’m new to the retail space, so this first summer I’m sticking to just restocking best-sellers. As I settle in and learn the space, what customers want, and what I can do with my designs to make women feel fabulous, I’ll add new styles and product lines. Next up will likely be hats, beach blankets, and, of course, new cover ups.

As for other online opportunities, I was recently approved to be Walmart.com’s first higher-end (what they deemed as “fashion-forward”) beach cover up brand. Their online clientele are looking for higher quality brands and are ready to pay a higher price point for it. I am honored to be their first and look forward to the test this year.

My goal is to uplift women and make them feel fabulous. I want them to love wearing

Bette beachwear because they feel seen and celebrated, not because it covers up something they don’t like. I want my future designs to inspire confidence and boldness in beach style. I hope to transform how women experience beach life through stylish and versatile pieces that flatter all shapes and sizes.

My father-in-law told me that he recently got a call and was told, in an urgent tone, that his grandson (which is our son) was in jail and needed bail. Upon hearing that, he responded calmly, “Oh, is that so? How many years will he be incarcerated for?” And the scammer hung up without another word. We all had a laugh but we also know many stories where the calls were much more convincing and people, especially older adults, often fall for such scams and sometimes lose thousands of dollars.

According to Federal Trade Commission, 2023 saw the highest ever loss to scams1 reaching a whopping $10 billion dollars of reported losses.

So, how better to protect all of us, especially our elders, from becoming the next victim of these scams? It could be especially detrimental for them to lose their lifelong savings, when they have little to no capacity or time to earn it back. Here are some tips:

1. Do not answer/respond to calls, texts or emails from strangers, even if they claim to be from an organization or person you know.

Some scammers use technology to change the phone number or caller ID, so what you see might not be real. Even if you really think they are legit, don’t share any personal information (such as birthday, social security number, bank account or credit card info, etc.). If you really feel the need to talk with them, find the agency’s official website, and call the number listed on their website. Don’t click on any link or download an attachment, in an email or text, if it’s from someone you are not expecting to send you such info.

2. Don't be tricked by "big news" from a call.

They may claim to be from the government (like Medicare, Social Security office, IRS, a bank, the police, a utility company or a tech company), they may say you owe them money, or you won a prize, or that someone is suing you, or you would be arrested for something you have no idea about, unless you pay them right away. Hang up the phone! You can call such entities with their contact number on their official website if you are truly concerned. Chances are, they are scams.

3. Romance scams.

Romance scams. Many seniors feel lonely and want to have someone to talk to. And when they get an unsolicited email/text that often sounds warm and flattering, chances are it could be the start of a romance scam. They aim to gain your trust and then use some emergency or excuse to ask money. Don’t fall for such scams!

4. Have you ever seen bold flashes on your computer screen saying your computer is infected with a virus (and prompting you to call a number on the screen right away?

That’s typically the start of a tech-scam! Close your internet browser right away, turn off your computer. Wait for a few minutes before turning it on again. If you worry about a virus infecting your device, take it to a local computer repair to have it looked at. Don’t call those numbers on the flashing screen!

5. Have you received messages about great opportunities? You've won something? Or you receive an unexpected check in the mail?

If such “great news” comes from a stranger, it’s likely the start of a scam. Don’t try to deposit/cash a check nor should you send a stranger a check just because they say they’ve given you more because those are not real. Don’t fall for it!

6. Did you get a call from a loved one about a dire situation, from a number you don't recognize?

The caller may be claiming your loved one was kidnapped, or injured, and needs money from you right away. Hang up the phone! Call your loved one directly, or someone who lives with them to verify first. Chances are, they are going about their normal daily activity just fine. If all fails, call the police but don’t send money under such pressure.

The bottom line? Stop! Talk to someone you trust. Before you do anything else, tell someone a friend, a family member, a neighbor, about what happened. Talking about it could help you to realize it’s a scam.

The latest economic reports bring a mix of stability and optimism for the U.S. economy and housing market. Let’s explore how these developments create exciting opportunities for homebuyers and sellers.

ECONOMIC GROWTH REMAINS POSITIVE

The Bureau of Economic Analysis recently adjusted its estimate for Q1 2024 GDP growth to a solid 1.3%, down slightly from 1.6%. Despite this adjustment, the economy continues to grow steadily, providing a stable foundation. While consumer spending has moderated to 2%, this still represents healthy activity, reflecting a cautious yet resilient economic environment.

Opinion: For homebuyers and sellers, this steady economic growth suggests a stable market. Buyers can take comfort in the consistent economic environment, while sellers can remain confident in the underlying strength of the market

STRONG JOB MARKET

May saw a robust addition of 272,000 jobs, well above expectations. The slight increase in the unemployment rate to 4% is a minor adjustment in an otherwise strong labor market. This long-standing period of low unemployment underlines the economy's resilience and the abundance of opportunities for job seekers.

HOUSING MARKET OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES: positive insights for Buyers & Sellers

Insight: A strong job market translates into confidence for homebuyers. Stable employment prospects mean buyers are more likely to secure financing, and sellers can feel assured that demand remains robust.

INFLATION AND CONSUMER PRICES SHOW PROGRESS

The core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, a key measure of inflation, rose by only 0.3% month-over-month in April. This modest increase signals progress toward stabilizing prices. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) also rose by 0.3%, reflecting a balance between costs and consumer spending power.

Opinion: Steady inflation progress is good news for everyone. Buyers can anticipate more predictable expenses, and sellers can benefit from sustained purchasing power in the market.

HOUSING MARKET ADJUSTMENTS CREATE OPPORTUNITIES

April brought a slight dip in home sales, but this creates opportunities for both buyers and sellers. The 16% increase in existing home inventory year-over-year provides more options for buyers, while sellers can leverage the growing market to attract interested parties. The rise in new home inventory, the highest since January 2008, indicates a healthy expansion of housing options.

Insight: For buyers, an increase in inventory means more choices and potential for finding the perfect home. Sellers can take advantage of the competitive market to showcase their properties effectively.

MORTGAGE RATES AND DELINQUENCY REMAIN MANAGEABLE

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 7.06% in May. While this is higher than historical lows, it remains manageable and reflects a stable lending environment. Delinquency rates, though slightly up, are still below pre-pandemic levels, indicating robust mortgage performance.

Opinion: Buyers can navigate current mortgage rates with confidence, exploring various financing options. Sellers can trust in the stability of the lending market to support continued home buying activity.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

The U.S. economy continues to show resilience and growth, providing a stable backdrop for the housing market. Inflation is gradually stabilizing, and the job market remains strong, presenting ample opportunities for both buyers and sellers.

FINAL THOUGHTS: For homebuyers, the current marke offers a ariety of options and the chance to make informed, confident decisions. Sellers can feel optimistic about the ongoing demand and the potential to achieve their property goals. Embracing these positive trends and staying adaptable will ensure success in this dynamic market.

A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match.

Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chef-worthy steak:

PREPARE YOUR CUT

Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill. Placing a refrigerator-cool slab on hot grates works against you in two ways: first, the cold meat instantly chills your previously warm grill, and second, the inner portion of the steak will take longer to grill.

ADD

SOME SALT

Feel free to add any spices you prefer, but a good steak typically doesn’t require fancy seasoning a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor.

AIM

FOR HIGH HEAT

Grilling a steak correctly actually isn’t just about maintaining a sweltering flame. A two-zone fire is usually the way to go one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through without burning over indirect heat.

SEAR AND SLIDE

Speaking of searing, cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch.

Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare, 140-145 F is medium, 150-155 F is medium-well and 160-175 Fis well done.

LET REST

Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting the steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat.

IN 5 EASY STEPS

A well-rounded meal calls for sides and veggies.

Before you plan your next backyard barbecue, incorporate tasty vegetables peppers, asparagus, onions, tomatoes, zucchini and more for an all-out blitz of fresh-grilled flavor. Consider these simple steps to properly grill your crispy veggies:

LIGHT THE GRILL

Step one, of course, is to prep a hot grill. For the best cooking experience, you’ll want medium-high heat or even high heat for quick, direct grilling. By lighting the grill ahead of veggie prep, you’ll allow plenty of heating time to complete your other tasks.

PREPARE VEGGIES

Cut off stems, blemishes or remove pits and seeds. You may want to chop, dice or slice based on your recipe.

COAT VEGGIES WITH OLIVE OIL

Drizzling just a small amount of olive oil over your vegetables and tossing to coat adds a couple of benefits. First, it helps the outer layer crisp rather than dry out, plus aids with seasonings like salt and pepper sticking to the vegetable instead of falling off while on the grill or in a pan.

CONSIDER USING FOIL PACKETS OR SKEWERS

If char marks aren’t your thing, tossing chopped or diced veggies into a foil packet before hitting the grill steams them for a bit of a softer texture. Alternately, wooden skewers soaked in water (to prevent burning) can help keep smaller chunks of veggies from slipping through the grill grates while still achieving a crispy exterior.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE GRILL AT ALL TIMES

Different types of vegetables and preparation methods call for different cook times, but 5-10 minutes over direct heat generally gets the job done. The smaller you chunk, chop, slice or dice, the less time it will take to cook your veggies...

Bright sunshine, warm patios and fresh foods go hand in hand. As warm weather and sunny days call you outdoors, bring the whole family along with favorite meals that blend perfectly with a soft breeze and the subtle sounds of nature.

Al fresco dining doesn’t have to be difficult. Just gather a few supplies, whip up a favorite recipe or two and ask for a hand in heading outside. Take these tips into account to help ensure your backyard dining goes off without a hitch.

Create a Cozy Spot

Dinner in the backyard means convenience and the comfort of your own patio furniture, but you can always enhance the experience with an umbrella to add a touch of shade or a small fan on those still, steamy evenings. If a busy day means a later dinner, hanging strings of soft lighting can help illuminate the table.

And this salad does not disappoint!

1/2 head romaine lettuce

1 pint cherry tomatoes

2 small avocados

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 pound ground beef (80/20 ground chuck)

2 teaspoons Newman’s Own Mild Taco Seasoning

1/4 cup water

1 can (15 1/2 ounces) black beans

1 1/2 cups canned corn

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, plus additional for serving (optional), divided

1 cup Newman’s Own Southwest Ranch Dressing

6 ounces tortilla chips

Coarsely chop lettuce, halve cherry tomatoes and pit, peel and slice avocados. Set aside.

Total time: 25 minutes

In large frying pan over medium-high heat, heat olive oil. Brown ground beef, stirring occasionally, 4-5 minutes. Add taco seasoning and water; cook according to package directions, 5-8 minutes, or until meat is thoroughly cooked.

Drain and rinse black beans. Set aside.

Divide lettuce among serving bowls or plates. Top with ground beef, tomatoes, avocados, black beans, corn, cheese and 2 tablespoons cilantro. Tuck in tortilla chips.

Drizzle with southwest ranch dressing, sprinkle with additional cilantro.

Serve a Perfect Salad Partner

While a hearty salad alone is enough for a filling al fresco meal, you can take your backyard dining to the next level with the perfect partner for satisfying salads: crudites. Arranged neatly on a platter or board, a seasonal variety of sliced or whole raw vegetables such as snap peas, celery, carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, mini bell peppers, broccoli and more can make for a perfect accompaniment to nearly any outdoor meal. Serve with a dip or two, such as Newman’s Own’s Southwest Ranch Dressing, to complete your al fresco appetizer.

Summer is the time to get outside and remember the importance of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed as a family. Encouraging children at an early age to participate in outdoor exploration can help foster lifelong skills.

Research published in the “International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health” found associations between nature exposure and improved cognitive function, brain activity, blood pressure, mental health, physical activity and sleep. What’s more, kids who play and take part in outdoor adventures learn skills like problem solving, according to the American Academy of Pediatricians.

“A healthy curiosity and freedom to explore are essential ingredients for successful adventures, but fueling all of that fun is equally important,” says Sarah Smith-Simpson, PhD, principal food scientist at Gerber. “Kids need well-balanced nutrition from a variety of sources to fuel their summertime play."

TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH HEALTH CONDITIONS

3 TIPS FOR FUELING SUMMER ADVENTURES

Ensure your family is ready to make memories and enjoy the exciting adventures ahead with these tips from Smith-Simpson:

Get Colorful with Fruits &Veggies

Serving a rainbow of colors with an assortment of fruits and veggies means nutrient-rich snacks that are equal parts flavorful and fun. One of the best parts about fruits is they’re easily transportable to bring along for warm days exploring a nearby park. They’re perfect for a quick snack on the go – just cut them according to your child’s age and developmental stage to avoid hazards like choking then pack them in a small cooler to keep from spoiling!

Pack Plenty &Variety of Snacks

A key part of inspiring exploration in young children begins with nutrient-rich snacks that help fuel their adventures. Introducing diverse foods can help expand palates and provides a wide range of nutrients to support the entire family.

When introducing foods into a child’s diet, consistency is key. Experts say babies may need to try a new food up to 10 times before they like it.

Hydrate on the Go

Avoid dehydration by ensuring you’re bringing enough water for the entire family on all your summertime trips, whether they’re around the block or across the country. Use refillable bottles for mom and dad, and for little ones, be sure to pack non-spill sippy cups for toddlers that help avoid messes. Fill a larger container with clean water from home you can use to refill everyone’s cups, bottles and canteens to stay hydrated throughout the day.

From staycations and road trips to Caribbean getaways and coastal cruises, summertime offers the chance to escape and unwind with a much needed (and deserved) vacation. For people living with health conditions like heart disease or stroke, leaving home can pose special challenges.

As travel season takes shape, the experts at the American Heart Association celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all recommends a few important tips to ease on-the-go woes.

“As we look forward to summer, many people will be traveling to spend treasured time with family and friends, or maybe just to enjoy some relaxation on the beach,” says Gladys Velarde, M.D., FAHA, professor of medicine and national volunteer with the American Heart Association. “It’s not always that simple for people who have chronic health conditions that require multiple medications or special medical equipment. There are also considerations for how to maintain your health and not put yourself at increased risk.”

Velarde said that doesn’t mean travel is off limits if you have a chronic health condition. A little planning and preparation can reduce stress and prepare you for your next big adventure.

Check in with your health care provider

Speak with your primary care physician or specialist about your travel plans and any special considerations related to your health. He or she can offer guidance on any restrictions or precautions you should keep in mind. Carry a list of all medications, including dosages and pharmacy information. Also consider carrying a copy of key medical records and a list of phone numbers, including your doctors and emergency contacts.

Manage your medications

Ensure medications are clearly labeled and that you’ve packed enough to last the entire trip. If you’re traveling across time zones, enlist your health care provider to help adjust medication schedules. Some medications require refrigeration; research how to pack them appropriately for airport security and make sure you’ll have a refrigerator in your lodging.

Plan for transportation

Whether you’re traveling by plane, bus, train, cruise ship or other means, it’s paramount to plan ahead for special medical equipment. For example, if you use a wheelchair, walker or other assistance for getting around, you may need to check in with the travel company to find out how to properly transport your devices.

Master the airport

During this especially busy travel season, planning ahead can make the airport experience easier. If you have a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, you may need to go through a special security screening. Walking through a crowded terminal can take its toll, so consider requesting a wheelchair or courtesy cart to get to your gate when booking your ticket.

Long flights may increase your risk for blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Consider wearing compression socks and walk around the cabin while it’s safe and allowed to help improve your circulation.

Know the signs

While it’s always important to know the signs of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest, it’s particularly critical while away from home. If you or someone you’re with experience symptoms, call 911. Many airports even offer kiosks where you can learn Hands-Only CPR while waiting for your flight.

“Every individual’s condition is unique, and you’ll want to tailor your travel plans to your specific needs,” Velarde says. “By taking a little time now to plan and prepare, your vacation can be just what the doctor ordered to help you unwind and recharge.”

Summer Health Concerns: It may be an exciting time of year for humans with all the extra activities, seasonal celebrations and travel, but those summer pastimes can add up to a whole lot of stress for pets. In addition, environmental factors like allergens and heat can affect them more than you realize.

Allergies Pets can be affected by many of the same allergens as humans, including grass, pollen and other vegetation that is more prevalent during warmer months. Watch for signs of trouble (scratching, chewing, watery eyes and general discomfort). Veterinarians can offer advice on allergy support and supplements appropriate for your pet’s age, breed and size.

Fireworks Summer tends to bring more loud noise and commotion in general, but this is especially true around the Fourth of July when explosions become the norm. If pets are fearful, it’s especially important to ensure they stay in well-secured areas since fireworks are a common cause of pets running away. If possible, find a safe spot within your house where outside noises are muffled. Provide some comfort items and check on them regularly. If they seem extremely distressed, vet-recommended anxiety treatments and supplements can help promote relaxation and soothe their nerves.throughout the day.

Travel — If your pet suffers from separation anxiety, summer trips can be problematic. One solution is to take your pet with you, but that’s not always practical or even possible. When pets with separation anxiety stay behind, it’s a good idea to leave them with someone they know, and even better if that person can stay in your home so pets are in familiar surroundings. If that’s not an option, introducing pets to their caretaker or doing a trial run at the kennel can help ease their nerves. In extreme cases, you may need to consult with a vet about supplements that can help soothe pets in your absence.

SUPPORTING YOUR PET'S HEALTH DURING SUMMER

As a pet parent, you know your pet’s needs are continually evolving. That’s true during different stages of growth and even as the seasons change.

Part of supporting your pet throughout the year is understanding the specific risks that come with changing weather and special seasonal events. Supporting pets this summer can be easier with these tips:

Dehydration Just like humans, hotter temperatures make it easier to get dehydrated, which can lead to myriad health concerns. Ensure pets have access to fresh, clean and cool water at all times and be sure to alert your veterinarian if you notice any changes in their interest in drinking, as that can signal an issue. Also watch for signs of dehydration, such as weakness, less energy, changes in appetite and panting.

Managing Activity Levels: Monitoring your pet's activity level is important to ensure they don’t get overheated but you also want to ensure pets get adequate exercise to maintain a healthy weight and keep muscle tone strong. This may require getting creative about bringing playtime indoors or shifting your routine to accommodate walks early or late in the day when temperatures tend to be more forgiving.

Health Supplements: Supplements can help complement regular food to ensure pets are getting all of the nutrients and preventative support they need to thrive. One comprehensive option is NaturVet’s Breed Specific Soft Chews supplement line, which is made up of five products that provide proactive support for distinct dog breed categories, including toy/small, bully, sport/working, doodle and giant. The vet-formulated soft chew line was designed to offer a streamlined and personalized supplement approach for breeds with particular health needs. To support pets precisely as they are, each product offering is formulated for pure and mixed breed dogs alike, delivering tailored, wholesome ingredients to address joint, allergy, immune, heart, gut, anxiety and dental issues.

MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT BY PLANTING A TREE

There are countless ways you can make your environmental contributions felt. If you’d like to join millions of others in the fight for Mother Earth, consider one of the most popular gifts given back to the world each year: planting a tree.

Consider these tips to properly plant a tree in your own yard:

Choose the Right Tree and Location

Depending on where you live and your desired outcome, choosing the right tree and planting location are critical factors. Larger shade trees help cool homes in warmer climates, evergreens provide privacy and fruit trees offer a grocery store right in your backyard. Consider your available space along with conditions that will impact the tree itself, such as soil conditions, sun exposure, drainage and more.

Dig Safely

Before digging, remember that proper tree placement requires factoring in underground utility lines, overhead power lines and proximity to sidewalks, driveways and homes. Dial 811, the national call-before-you-dig number, to locate underground utilities and consider contacting an arborist or tree care professional to make sure you’ve weighed all the important factors.

Break Ground

Dig a hole that’s roughly 2-3 times wider than the root ball of your tree and equally as deep as the root ball. Be sure the trunk flare (where the trunk expands at the base of the tree) is partially visible when planted. Remove any wrapping or cover from the root ball and trunk. Lift from the root ball, not the trunk, to place in the hole then straighten vertically and firmly backfill soil around the root ball to stabilize.

Add Mulch Mulching helps maintain moisture and improve soil conditions while controlling weed growth. Place a 2-3-inch layer in a 3-foot radius around the base of the tree without touching the trunk itself.

Keep Soil Moist

Make sure your tree has enough water to grow strong by keeping the soil moist. Typically, this means watering just once per week, barring rain, but may require more frequency during especially hot weather.
