EDITORIAL

Birthdays are a special time to celebrate not only once again living a year full of blessings and chances to improve one’s self, but also a time to look back and ask yourself, have I made a difference? We should all be thankful that for once a year, we take one day out of our lives and reflect on being not only older, but wiser. Wiser in the sense that we learn from our experiences, and apply them before our next birthday. Did you know that all around the world, people have different ways of celebrating their birthdays? Jewish boys become a bar mitzvah on their 13th birthday. Jewish girls become bat mitzvah on their 12th birthday, or sometimes on their 13th birthday in Reform and Conservative Judaism. This marks the transition where they become obligated in commandments of which they were previously exempted and are counted as part of the community. In Canada and the United States, families often mark a girl’s 16th birthday with a “sweet sixteen” celebration. In some Hispanic countries, as well as in Portuguese speaking Brazil, the quinceañera (Spanish) or festa de quinze anos (Portuguese) celebration traditionally marks a girl’s 15th birthday. In the Philippines, girls on their 18th birthday or boys on their 21st birthday celebrate a debut. There are

so many ways to celebrate a birthday, and so many combinations in how to do them. Some historians believe that birthdays began as a form of protection. It was a common belief that evil spirits were more dangerous to a person when he or she experience a change in their daily life, such as turning a year older. To protect them from harm, friends and family would gather around the birthday person and bring good cheers, thoughts and wishes. Giving gifts brought even more good cheer to ward off the evil spirits. Noisemakers are thought to be used at parties as a way of scaring away the evil spirits. The birthday history custom of lighting candles originated with people believing that the gods lived in the sky and by lighting candles and torches they were sending a signal or prayer to the gods so they could be answered. When you blow out the candles and make a wish this is another way of sending a signal and a message. As most of us are of a Christian Denomination, celebrating a birthday is also a time of reflecting on one’s accomplishments for the past year. Most people take the new year’s celebrations to reflect on their accomplishments, but we should also take time during our birthdays to do so. Have we

Last November 9th, the club, represented by yours truly in the company of several of our members attended the first district wise TRF Banquet. The occasion was put together to recognize TRF Donors within the district. Robert Kuan was the guest speaker and being the entrepreneurial maverick that he is noted for, shared his philosophy of drawing significant contributions for fellow Filipinos through business and enterprise. His success in merging the ideals of business with social conscience was eloquent in his talk. He shared a story on giving, and emphasized that the more one gives, the more God showers us with blessings. He said that the reason behind God’s continued grace and approval in his life is giving back and sharing the blessings he has received.

Many religions preach that what we give is returned seven or even tenfold… but I know that every one of us here needs no amount of lecture to bear out what we have experienced first hand in the years that we have spent with Rotary – the refinement of our persons is sufficient return that can substantiate those beliefs. We should not also lose sight of the fact that those who can attest to our giving can be reminded that we are all dependent on one another and that reminder can serve to embolden innumerable others to follow our benevolent paradigm. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his second inaugural address in 1937, “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” God did not bless us to be comfortable but He blessed us to be comforters to others.
