DECEMBER MESSAGE RON D. BURTON Rotary International President PRESIDENT 2013-14

One winter day, Rotary founder Paul Harris took a walk down a well-kept street just outside Chicago. Watching children sledding down a hillside, he recalled his own boyhood in New England. At that moment, he decided that if he ever were to own a home, it would be on top of that hill on Longwood Drive. In 1912, Harris and his wife, Jean, made that dream a reality. They named their new home Comely Bank, after the street where Jean grew up in Scotland. Over the years, the Harrises

hosted Rotary meetings and entertained visiting dignitaries, surrounded by objects they had collected on their travels throughout the world. The trees they planted in their friendship garden still grace the yard. In 1947, Harris died there; Jean sold the home not long after- terity, as a place for Rotarians to gather in the spirit of friendship and service. ward and returned to Scotland. The property changed hands twice more before the Paul and Jean Harris Home Foundation purchased it in 2005. Through the efforts of that group, and with the help of the Rotary clubs of Chicago and Naperville, the Harris home has been saved from demolition. Now, it is up to us to protect the home for pos-

Christmas Message

G

reetings! Yuletide season is here. Brrr month is felt and everyone is in a festive mood to celebrate. December is Rotary Family Month and this is an opportune time to spend the holidays with our loved ones and also a time to share our blessings to others. However, because of the recent typhoon that hit Visayas, many clubs opted to celebrate Christmas with simple gatherings and come up with gift giving activities for the less fortunate in various schools and barangays. The pictures depicted in this issue showcase the joyful activities of the Clubs in different areas. Rotarians have a heart of gold and hands that offer untiring help. Rotarians found time to share their blessings and with every members’ big heart, a lot of children and underprivileged folks were treated to fun-filled celebrations of games, gift giving, food and drinks and programs where children in various communities participated in by showcasing their talents in singing and dancing. Rotarians and their families together with Partners in Service enjoyed the time they spent with the children and the communities they visited. The smiles on their faces compensated for all the hard work and efforts put in by all Rotarians, “Service above self ” exemplified during the holiday seasons.

Dear fellow Rotarians, Friends of Rotary, Rotaractors, Interactors and Rotary Spouses of District 3790, Jennifer and I wish you all the very best this Holiday Season and hope that you are able to spend time with your family and friends, and reflect on all great things we have accomplished in the first semester of RY 20132014. This Rotary Year focused on our Theme “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”, and surely we all did ! Some of you may be going out of the country, others may travel to the provinces, a few may find time to visit resorts, many may find time to visit friends and relatives, but most of you may just be staying home to relax after a very busy year. Keep safe, stay happy, and enjoy the holidays. Thank you to all of you for what you have done for Rotary in our first semester of this Rotary year. We wish you a smooth shift to 2014 and thank you for your friendship and support this year. Our success is attributed to all wonderful Rotarians who are committed and dedicated to the objectives of Rotary. Let us continue to show our good Rotary Image and we look forward to a more fruitful and successful second half of our Rotary term as we continue to work towards achieving our District Goals for this RY 2013-2014. God Bless to all.

M

erry Christmas to all fellow Rotarians, Rotary families and our Partners in Service! Celebrations for Christmas although simply revelled by most clubs gave the members and their families an enjoyable time to fellowship with each other. Exchange gifts were exciting, games were hilarious, singing and dancing were entertaining. Even DG Linda Winter found time to fellowship with her Assistant Governors in Poracay. Rotarians know how to have fun but they never forget to fulfil their Rotary work despite the holidays. We have seen how unwavering the spirit of giving, sharing and engaging Rotarians are to make people happy especially the underprivileged whom they shared their time with, to let them feel that Rotarians truly care and made them realize their Christmas wishes. Isn’t it amazing how a simple act of goodness may mean the world to the people whose lives were gratified? Helping is not seasonal for Rotarians; it is a way of life.

Sincerely, Linda and Jennifer Winter

L

et us look forward to a Prosperous New Year and may our Rotary work continue to flourish as we realize our District goals and thrusts for RY 2013-2014. Keep us posted with all your heart-warming projects. Let GML capture your good deeds… Share Your Rotary moments.
