Great things happened in October and these are evident in our October Issue primarily because of RYLA 2013. The Rotary Club of Baguio took the challenge to host this event and did wonders for the successful holding of RYLA 2013. Various Rotary Clubs of District 3790 gave their full support by sending big number of delegates. It was three days of fun, learnings on leadership and youth empowerment, getting to know Baguio, discovery of amazing talents, newfound friendships and display of resourcefulness and creativity during the Spook-takular Halloween Night ! This issue showcase all the enjoyable and essential activities from October 25 – 27, 2013. Positive feedback were obtained from the delegates with the most interesting remark heard that of a collective clamor to extend RYLA. This just goes to show how much our youth delegates had an awesome time during RYLA. Monthly club reports for October were my main source of articles for this issue. I cannot contain my happiness as I go through each and

every report posted online and be amazed at various projects which epitomize the true essence of Service Above Self The involvement of the Youth in Rotary work made it more special. The guidance of Rotarians in exposing the youth to assist in worthwhile projects is very noteworthy to inculcate in them the mind set for service and the opportunity to become future Rotarians. The typhoons brought together the spirit of love, care and cooperation amongst Rotarians as they gather relief goods and conduct relief operations to assuage the plight of our affected brothers and sisters in the affected areas. Governor Linda made it a point to give assistance to the relief operations and show her appreciation to all Rotarians who went beyond their comfort zone to allevi-

ate the situation. The show of support and continuing efforts of each club to accomplish more and actively implement life changing community service projects heightens Governor Linda’s desire to do more herself for the clubs and the district. Let us continue to engage the Youth in Rotary life. Let us continue to provide comfort to people in need. Let us actively participate in Rotary work and let us never get tired of doing good even in challenging times. Two more months and we are half way to our Rotary Year. Let GML showcase all the great things you have done for Rotary. Be continually inspired and be an inspiration to others. Keep us posted with what your Club is doing. While some Rotarians call this the “forgotten” area of service, I would disagree: In fact, vocational service is the avenue through which we serve so often, we don’t always recognize it as service.

That diversity is an advantage not only to our service but to our members: It gives us all a valuable way to find the connections and opportunities that help us in our

own careers. That aspect of membership is as old as Rotary. Paul Harris himself wrote often of the business advantages of Rotary membership, believing, as I do, that being a Rotarian means a person holds a certain set of values that will make him or her a good person to do business with. Today, with the world more connected than ever, Rotary membership is an honor that we should be proud to share.

By: Maria Monine Manalo The recently concluded Rotary Youth Leadership Awards held last October 25-27, 2013 at Crown Legacy Hotel, Kisad Road, Baguio City was attended by 570 delegates all over Luzon. With this jam-packed event, I am very much privileged to be given the opportunity to speak and share my hosting skills as I was tasked to be one of the main hosts of the conference. Let me give you my insights on the hosting stint that I have done from Day 1- Day 3.

For me, for the many hosting stints I have experienced, the first performance is really important for it will really leave the impression. It was also a chance for me to observe and assess my audience if they will find you interesting to listen to

Honestly, it was difficult to interact with the bunch of delegates because they are very young teenagers who may not even think that what we are saying are really significant. Unlike older audience who knows how to appreciate every word you utter, these group of people must be literally nurtured and given a good kind of entertainment for them to be

The first night was highlighted by the Talent Night where 23 entries presented, the hard part was trying to organize these entries because we were given late notice and everything was on the spot. Good thing, our co-facilitators from SLU School of Medicine, Gail Toledo, Kimberly Mendoza and Kristopher Quitiquit assisted us. Fortunately we were able to end the night smoothly and spontaneously.

The hosting stint during the morning was light, we just had to open the program and set everyone out to participate in the Amazing Race and Games. We had the chance to go back at our hotel room for 2 hours

and rest. We resumed in the afternoon, introduced the different guest speakers until 7 PM, the good part was engaging everyone to be participative on the different workshops, seeing everyone enjoy their towerbuilding activity and formulate their leadership speeches. The hard part came when there was extension of the schedule. There were lengthy talks which drain the audience as manifested by some who went missing. At the

end of the day, only few out of 570 delegates remained. It was difficult to encourage the audience to stay because the program set for Day 2 was indeed very busy. The delegates were so tired from the morning activity and there was no enough time for them to rest. With this scenario, it was hard for me to contain the group but we tried our best to entertain them by giving jokes, ice breakers and advertisement. After dinner, we had â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spook-Tacular Halloween

Night,â&#x20AC;? in which everyone gave their effort to dress up and be in their respective Halloween Characters. It was fun hosting because we had a simple party, choosing the Best Dressed, introducing them one by one and giving comments about their chosen persona. The party was just short-lived because right after the 1st part of the program and the awarding of major raffle prizes and awards, the audience drifted back to their hotel rooms to rest.
