Hong Kong Resource Guide 2012’s Charity Partner - Rotary Club Kowloon Golden Mile The liveliest & friendliest Rotary Club in Hong Kong What Is Rotary? Rotary is a global network of community volunteers. Rotary club members are business, professional, and community leaders in your locality who meet regularly to plan and implement community service activities and network with other professionals. For those interested, members can also choose to become involved in international humanitarian service efforts. More than 1.2 million men and women in over 200 countries and geographical areas belong to over 33,000 Rotary clubs. Rotary builds international understanding through scholarships, exchange programs, and humanitarian grants. Throughout the world, Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of educational, intercultural, and humanitarian activities designed to improve the lives of others.

Benefits of Membership Belonging to a Rotary club provides members with an opportunity to make a contribution to their own communities and to communities around the world. Members may join Rotary for many reasons, including community involvement, personal development, professional networking, and camaraderie with fellow members. But perhaps the most important benefit is the satisfaction gained from making a real difference in the world.

Service above Self From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor. The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: Of the things we think, say or do: • Is it the truth? • Is it fair to all concerned? • Will it build goodwill & better friendship? • Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Business cards... A snapshot of your brand Business cards are a tiny piece of your personality, something you get only one chance of making an impact with and leaving behind! Business cards tell a story, and can transmit the essence of your brand. A business card is a sales piece, a sort of mini ad for you and everything you stand for. Many will argue the importance of investing in a great business card. A memorable card creates a memorable brand. If you create an informative, well designed and beautiful artifact that is kept rather than thrown away, it will live on. In many cases, people will save a great card even after copying the info — they may even give the card to a friend just to experience it. The perfect business card is intended to be an experience as much as a source of information. Creating the perfect business card is just a matter of finding the right balance between the two. Here are successful tips for creating the perfect business card for your brand... Make it clean - It’s essential to create a clean design with readable text and less clutter. A card that looks too busy will hide the message your business is trying to convey, and it will become lost on potential customers. Use your company’s logo as the basis for the design, making it the biggest element on the card. If making it the biggest isn’t the way you decide to go, you may still want to consider making it the most noticeable. Make it memorable - When it comes to a memorable design, keep in mind that your card will reach a wider audience if it becomes one that people want to share. This brings us back to the card as an experience. People will share your card if they enjoy the experience of it. When people remember your business card, they’ll remember your business — and that goes for memorability in design as well as delivery. Make it unique - A poor quality card can undermine even the best rapport or the most persuasive conversation so invest in it. A unique business card will make you, and your business, stand out. Emboss it, embellish it, or try a different shape or other effects. Don’t be afraid to be a bit ‘out there’, but remember that an out-there design isn’t for everyone. While a more traditional business card would work, it’s often a missed opportunity to create something memorable. From impactful name cards to stationary and marketing materials to websites Print Plus International is your designing and printing partner. You will enjoy the experience as much as the final product! www.PrintPlus.com.hk | Tel:(852) 2333 4421

Design, Create & Share Designs have been evolving through generations. The greatest ones have always created chaos! When creating or observing a design – consider the eternal value to it. What is the impact the design is trying to create? Personally design to me represents: 1.

A Solution to the seen or unseen problems.

2.

A Freedom to explore, create and share your ideas.

3.

An endless opportunity of Choices.

4.

An Expression for Passion.

In order to have en effectual design – Planning and research is key. Ideas should be evolved through inspirations and your own observations. Record all your information and development because these are the small improvements that will make your design more worthy. Always remember that everything around you is a form of inspiration. If an experience or someone has made a difference to your life, this is always a great form of motivation too! The most memorable designs are also the most personal, as there is an urge to create a mark. This passion is also contagious, hence the more you appreciate your own work, people will respect it equally too! Your audience will only see what you show them so be confident about what you create and believe. Don’t be scared to experiment when it comes to design, the more trials, the closer you are to your creation. However, make sure you don’t get carried away to the extent for you to not release when its finally right. Which is why it is always a good idea to start by having an aim for the big and small picture. This way you have something to work towards in the short and long run! ‘Design’ has no RIGHT or WRONG. It is a statement that one makes through their own opinions. A good design/ designer has made it through generations when it foresees the success through any failure and judgments.

Home Renovation Ideas and Tips Your home is a reflection of who you are as a person and any guests that come over will be able to see that as well. We over at The Makeover Company want to help you have a beautiful home that reflects your personality and helps to you relax so we are going to give you a few easy to follow tips to improve your home. Tips for the Bathroom Bathroom is one of the most intimate places in the home. To make your bathroom more colourful buy a few plants and put them around the sink and bath tub. The plants will add a lovely prefume in addition to colour. To add more privacy in your bath, go out and buy a can of glass frosting for the shower door. You can frost the whole thing or use a stencil to make a pattern on your shower door.

Tips for the Kitchen Your kitchen is a important place in the home. In Hong Kong most apartments are very tight and you can use all the storage space you can get. Use a wall-mount steel rack above the sink to arrange cooking utensils and equipment such as paper towels. If you have dirty stainless steel fixtures, use toothpaste to quickly and easily clean those dirty, stuck on stains. Here is what one of our clients said about the work we’ve done: “The Makeover Company did a wonderful job on my flat! Our place was old, cramped, and felt like a dungeon. We needed a change and called up the Makeover Company. All my dreams of having a large, bright space that is great for entertaining have come true thanks to the Makeover Company. I recommend that if you are redoing your flat you contact them immediately.”

FENG SHUI for CHILDREN BEATING the BEDTIME BLUES! Does your child have PROBLEMS SLEEPING or PAYING ATTENTION? Does your BABY have DISRUPTIVE SLEEP PATTERNS? Our children are the most precious gifts – from the day they are born we aim to offer them the very best of everything. Babies and children are sensitive to their environment, so aim to provide them with a sense of well being and provide them with the appropriate energy to enhance their development, temperament and health from an early age. Help reduce tension for the whole family in a way that does not involve endless time consuming therapies that may prove costly and counter productive to a child’s delicate self esteem When considering decorating a child’s room using FENG SHUI principles it is important to determine the child’s personal element which can have a great impact on what choice of colours and murals to use. Some children may require and benefit from an ocean themed room (water element) for her son only to find he wouldn’t sleep well and was constantly disturbed. After engaging in a FENG SHUI consultation she gradually changed the room to be more of a jungle effect (wood element) which was much more conducive for the child and he now sleeps well and enjoys spending more time with his friends in his room rather than turning the lounge into the playroom! When aligning a babes crib or child’s bed the most important factor is to align the head towards their most supportive direction which is determined by the gender and birth year offering in some cases immediate success in offering new parents or parents of an anxious child who doesn’t sleep through the night using their special FENG SHUI birth formula. A child who is experiencing restless sleep patterns it is important to observe what shadows are formed within the room as Winnie the Pooh looks cute and cuddly during the day he can turn into a scary monster in the night time shadows! YOUR CHILD DESERVES the BEST! GOLDEN ELEMENTS HK offers Parents a UNIQUE CONCEPT of not having to engage in a full consultation of the home – FENG SHUI CHILD / BABY focuses purely on YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN’S ROOM(S), keeping costs to a minimum and benefits to a maximum! Classically trained master graduate in the art of space alignment and Chinese metaphysics JILL LANDER inspires her clients to maximise their true potential using authentic yet practical FENG SHUI.

The Magic of Impressive first Impressions Tips and tricks to make impressive and lasting impressions Umm, I’d love to know that person ..... Do you realise you need to attract people to like you, hire you, retain you and promote you? Be aware that people notice one another and create instant impressions and judgements, good or bad, in minutes. It is said, ‘you don’t get a second chance to make a great first impression’! But in reality, you always have chances to make great impressions any time. Here are some valuable tips to attract people to you! First, project the right outer image, well termed as Image Management! Just like attractive ads, brochures, foods and packaging, everyone can make themselves attractive and also use impressive body language. Great grooming is a must (as not everyone is born beautiful). We are always covered in clothes, but skin and hair is always exposed and gets messy. In the urban dictionary ‘rat’s nest’ refers to messy hair and ‘autrine’ is beautiful skin and hair. Dress to Impress! It’s actually your ‘attire’- everything from tip to toe. Never expose bad body proportions. Correct these with fabrics and colours: wear darker colours on heavy areas (that’s why belts are worn mostly in darker colours); use lighter shades to add bulk. For a slim look, wear vertical designs, V necks, buttons etc.; learn fitting tricks; add accessories - jewellery, scarves and ties add glamour and elongate the body. Display self confidence - practice meeting, greeting and introducing yourself and others clearly, with a sincere smile. Smiles do hide nervousness and embarrassments. Rising, is a sign of respect – do rise for older people, important people and to receive guests. When in doubt, rise. Meeting and greeting people - be friendly or you may be considered snooty, proud, haughty, reserved, an introvert, shy or dumb. Notice newcomers, introduce yourself and others; Use people’s names, it gives attention and helps to remember names. People will surely appreciate and admire you. Use graceful body movements - pretend someone is watching or filming you! Keep body postures slim and tall. Never point; do use your hands with small gestures. Voice, Tone and Speech should be audible, not louder! Everything can be said nicely! Your tone of voice is much more important than your words. Also, speak interestingly by stressing important words. Converse with positive remarks and sincere compliments. Nothing nice to say? Don’t say it. To continue conversations, reply with longer answers. Offer help - don’t wait to be asked. Holding or opening doors is required by whoever reaches the door first, to avoid the door banging and to help the next person, especially if they are older or carrying bulky packages. Listening skills are equally important - everyone needs attention and loves to be heard. Have something to say, including ‘Oh’, ‘really’ ‘then....’, ‘that’s interesting’ etc. People appreciate a good listener. Ultimately gain popularity, respect and rewards!!! It’s the difference between you being ordinary or ‘extra’ ordinary! Enjoy life both ways- from your side and others’ side too! Shots are the New Black! Shots aren’t what they used to be. The days of knocking back a mouthful of straight tequila are over. Recently, bartenders and mixologists alike have ‘upped’ the shot game worldwide. Signature shots or elaborate cocktails to accompany your meal is nothing out of the ordinary in the modern drinking scene in Hong Kong. Shots are now for everyone and there is a shot for all. Even up until recently, drinkers have often been bound by the constraints of needing a bar to enjoy their innovative shots, perhaps due to convenience and lack of skill, but also that the mere thought of creating a bar worthy drink inside one’s home to serve guests was somewhat daunting. Thankfully now we are seeing new ways to enjoy drinks which fall outside of the realm of bars and restaurants. ZAVVA Shots is one of them. “Small, compact and bursting with energy – ZAVVA Shots embody what we feel Hong Kong is all about”, says Gabriella Zavatti, the Hong Kong-bred and based co-founder of the new ready-todrink shots, which have taken Hong Kong by storm. ZAVVA launched its first line of Asian-themed liqueur shots in December 2011 in response to high demand for a top quality, innovative and easy-to-manage party drink. Zavatti says, “Having been raised in Hong Kong, I saw a gap in the beverage market here that I wanted to fill with a real home-bred brand, a brand that understands the consumer and what they need in the fast paced Hong Kong lifestyle” So what are ZAVVA Shots exactly? ZAVVA Shots are 30ml alcoholic, ready-to-drink (RTD) shots that contain two separate, but equally complementary, flavoured liqueurs to deliver a delicious Asian-themed taste sensation. ‘We wanted to emulate that bar experience yet in a convenient and easily accessible form” says Zavatti. ZAVVA does just that. The innovative, twisted shot glass allows for two separate flavours in one shot, and its compact size provides consumers with a quick drink that can be enjoyed with friends at home, in the street, or at parties. Branded in Hong Kong, but made in Australia, Zavatti adds, “using only the highest quality ingredients is of the upmost importance to us.” Given the enthusiastic reception that ZAVVA Shots has received since its official launch, it seems that Hong Kongers are taking the plunge and taking their fair share of shots. ZAVVA Shots are conveniently available across Hong Kong in select 7-Eleven outlets, and supermarkets including Three-Sixty, Marketplace by Jason, Oliver’s Delicatessen and Wellcome, making them ideal for every occasion. It appears these shots are helping people have more exciting nights at home and on-the-go. Gambe! For more information, please visit: www.zavvashots.com and www.facebook.com/zavvazavva

Are ‘healthy’ foods really healthy? Have you seen these healthy phrases on ads or in restaurants and supermarkets? • Fat Free • Reduced Fat • Low Fat • Sugar Free • No Added Sugar • Diet We are supposed to believe that each of these categories makes a food healthier. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Here is what those “healthy food” phrases actually translate to: • Fat free, but full of sugar and chemicals. • Reduced fat, but increased carbohydrates. • Low fat, but high glycemic index. • Sugar free, but artificial everything else. • No added sugar… because the all natural version has almost enough sugar to give you type II diabetes anyway. • “Diet” food, but it has nothing worth eating in it anyway. The experts are concerned. A study at John Hopkins University recently determined a link between high blood sugar and heart disease. This means candy and other sugar-containing products are inherently unhealthy. Further studies have shown that ‘diet’ plans can be depleted in many vital nutrients. No wonder dieters get tired - they are eating so few calories and getting so little goodness that they can’t function! So what should we eat to be healthy? Fruits and vegetables and fresh fish or meat simply prepared are all good choices. One phrase to consider is this: “If your granny wouldn’t recognise it you shouldn’t eat it!” When we feed our bodies good and nutritious food it shows. Not only do we feel good but we look good as well. Drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep, and make sure you get adequate nutrition. FAITH Seva Group A group that has come about to fulfill their motive to help MANKIND There is always a reason why people cross paths. And the reason could be nothing better if it’s for the benefit of humanity. Two individuals, who had gone through their respective share of worldly experiences in life, came to sharing their stories realizing they both had a common underlying motive - TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO MANKIND! Both merged out positively from their challenges to lead life that could not be any better than it is now. And that’s how the Faith Seva Group came about 3 years ago when Sheela Samtani and Reshma Gopwani met. Being the back bone of the group, they strongly believe it would collapse without the tremendous support they have been receiving from their families and volunteers who time and again join them in making the events they organize every month a success. The group goes once a month to different homes namely the elderly homes, poor and caged homes, homes for handicapped, mentally challenged and blind. They also organize a Thanksgiving lunch once a year for domestic helpers in Hong Kong. Having praised the efforts of the group, nothing is possible without the grace of the Lord. And when the intention is right and a single step is taken towards accomplishing this goal, the Lord has taken hundred steps towards fulfilling the same. And this way, the faith of the group has grown stronger with every passing month. Most of the donation comes from the volunteers or other people who contribute food, provisions or monetarily with an open heart. Faith Seva Group’s ultimate goal is to help anyone in distress, suffering from poverty or lacking personal attention. The best of all that the group wishes to give to the underprivileged in society is time and love.

Searching for a school Finding the right school for your child and having that school choose your child is not easy! Here, we answer three of the questions we are asked most often. When should we start thinking about schools? When your pregnancy is confirmed! Some schools such as German Swiss International School, Harrow and Kellett School accept applications from birth. Many schools have preschool sections and, if they don’t, you’ll be looking for a kindergarten and a playgroup that will prepare your child for entry into your preferred primary school(s). Should I choose a ‘local’ or an international school? It depends. Also, the landscape of schools in Hong Kong is complicated and a division between ‘local’ and ‘international’ is too simplistic. For these two reasons, I suggest not to be limited to any particular type of school. Instead, clearly define your requirements and see which schools match. Is it difficult to get into a good school in Hong Kong? Yes. Ask any school how many applications they receive and they’ll tell you, “Too many!” However, the number of applications a school receives is not completely relevant since wise parents apply to six or more schools. With the right information, guidance and early planning you should be able to find a good school that fits your requirements.

Basics of Baking Lighter at Home Just for you, from Cakealicious, these are the big three rules when it comes to baking healthier at home. Reduce the amount of sugar used in your recipes. Unfortunately, that’s sometimes easier said than done. Some recipes depend on sugar for more than just taste in a recipe. You may have to experiment with different sugar substitutes when baking until you get it right. Reduce the amount of fat used in recipes, but keep in mind that some recipes need a minimum amount of fat in order to succeed at all. The biggest trick to learn in reducing the fat content is to substitute another moist ingredient for part of the butter, oil or shortening called for in the recipe. Popular choices include fat-free sour cream, light cream cheese, orange juice or applesauce. Make smaller servings more satisfying by adding fiber to recipes. Instead of chocolate, add fruit, or use whole wheat flour for part of the flour. When you increase the nutritional value of the dessert, it’s far easier to be satisfied with smaller portions - and fewer calories. There are lots of other little tricks to enhance flavor and make low sugar baking fun: u

Use flavor enhancers like lemon zest in fruity dishes. The tang brings out the fruit flavor and heightens the flavors of whatever ingredients you use. Vanilla, butter and nut flavorings can add the taste of butter and nuts without adding the extra fats. Cinnamon, cloves, allspice, ginger and nutmeg intensify flavors and enhance sweetness in a dish. Experiment with spice combinations to create a fresh, new flavor. Substitute strong, cold coffee for part of the liquid in chocolate recipes to bring out the chocolate flavor. Top cakes and cupcakes with fruit or fruit spread, or substitute pureed fruit for frosting between layers in a cake. Add a little extra vanilla when you reduce sugar in a recipe. It accentuates the sweetness. Use dried fruits in muffin and cake recipes to add a burst of sweetness in every bite.

Homeopathy - A healing science With more and more people turning towards alternative and non-invasive medicine, we now introduce you to Homeopathy. Homeopathy never goes against nature. it is a natural way of treatment by correlating modern human related science of immunology, embryology, physiology, genetics etc with the basic principle of homeopathy. Homeopathy does not treat disease but treat individual having disease. Body and mind are considered together while prescribing. Every individual is a different person. The way a person feels about disease, nature of pain is different from other person suffering from the same disease. Person’s disease is studied by taking into consideration his/her physical symptoms and likes, dislikes, way of life, etc. It does not suppress symptoms. It is not harsh, crude method of treatment. Homeopathic medicines are mild and gentle. The medicines are prepared from plants, minerals, moon light, magnet, animal extracts etc. They are potentised (diluted by a specific method) and these preparations are then dispensed in lactose powder or globules( prepared from goat milk) or water or medicinal alcohol. History of Homeopathy Homeopathy originated in Germany in 1794. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann found this faculty of medicine and is known as the father of Homeopathy. Over years, it has spread worldwide .It is widely practiced in European countries, India, Australia, NewZeland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Russia and many more. In today’s era, this is the best alternative for curing any disease. How Homeopathy works… The principle of homeopathy is similia similibus curantur. Likes are treated by likes. Homeopathic treatment is not a symptomatic relief. It works on the principle of increasing a person’s in-built power to resist diseases (Vital energy). It enhances body’s immune system to fight against diseases. Dr Rupal K Anandpara has been practicing Homeopathy in Hong Kong since 2001 and previously in Mumbai for 8 years. Internet Radio Internet radio is fast becoming one of the most powerful forces in entertainment. It’s the perfect mix of the old and new, technology breathing new life into a much-loved service. The spread of the internet into every aspect of peoples’ lives has created outcomes that nobody could ever have predicted, and as mobile devices make the internet more and more accessible, this can only continue. As with many new technologies, online radio is most popular among the younger crowd (18-25), but it is also becoming more and more popular among 36 – 50 year-olds³. As with more traditional radio, online radio is also the best way to discover new music, as well as providing a powerful tool for new musicians to have their work heard all around the world. What is, perhaps, more surprising is that those who listen to online radio are also less likely to engage in illegal downloading.* Online radio has also grown, by 16% over the last 12 months, while its more traditional rivals, such as terrestrial radio and CDs, have stayed more or less stable*. This has been helped significantly by the increased access to mobile internet through tablets, smartphones and other internetenabled devices, which are giving people more and more options when selecting their music*. Online users continue to prefer ad-supported online radio sources, such as HKGFM, over paid alternatives, with 42% of people online having listened to adsupported online radio whilst paid sources represent only 3%*. Online radio represents the most effective union of old methods with new technology, and as that technology changes, online radio will continue to develop and become more accessible to more people around the world.

THKGFM, the soul of Asia, and the very best online radio service on the planet. Music is what we do, and we do it with passion. Tune in at www.hkgfm.net.
