Hong Kong Reflections and more... This past year has not been easy - businesses affected, the travel scene completely changing, not being able to be with loved ones and an umpteen number of changes to basic lifestyle. This is a whole new phase which will go down in history! However, the pandemic has provided many with the chance for ref l e c t i on . In the hustle and bustle of life, we go by this concrete jungle with so much to do. Hong Kong has infrastructure which allows us to accomplish so much in a day! This place screams efficiency at its peak, but wears us out simultaneously. From a coffee meet to work, a client lunch, a school appointment, an evening workout, dinner with friends and finally - a little bit of Netflix before we hit the sack, society has gotten so used to the flow of their lifestyle… and the pandemic has broken that flow. As a result, here are some of our Reflections with this “pause’... - A lot is not in our control: This is a lesson for control freaks like me who never believed in ‘going with the flow’. I am now officially alive and flowing and it feels kind of liberating. Not being invested in heaps of planning and accepting whatever comes keeps my stress levels in check as long as I try my best. - We have everything we need: We always tend to feel like we can’t live without many of our possessions when really we need very little to survive. I write this whilst in quarantine, and am living off a tiny bit compared to of what I have accumulated at home and it’s a true eye opener! - We MUST be grateful: A lot of us have started counting our blessings, things that truly matter: optimum health, family, friends, work - we have so much to be thankful for! - Health is the biggest wealth: Having had time and space out has given us the ability to think individualistically, resulting in a lot of us having healthier regimes, enjoying it thoroughly in the process. Keeping healthy is crucial to fight this pandemic together! - Pick up a new hobby: I am thrilled to see many pick up new activities which they never had time for before: Hiking, mahjong, dancing, kayaking are just a few I have seen amongst family and friends and I see so much more joy in their faces! - Community Spirit: Watching people come together to help the needy and help each other has been heartwarming. Despite the devastation and negativity revolving around this pandemic, it has provided us with the opportunity for change. Humans propose and God disposes so what we can do during this time is keep positive, make the most out of it, reflect and soon this will all be over! Social Media:

10 Clever Tips To Skyrocket Your Traffic In 2021 More than half of the world uses social media daily and on average, users spend 2 hours 25 minutes on numerous platforms. Consumer behavior has changed significantly in 2020 and we’re here to help you keep up! Are you approaching your social media strategy like you always have? Level up with a no-nonsense list of actionable social media tips from experts: Pick your platforms - Don’t set up on every platform under the sun. Instead, prioritise posting ‘quality content’ on one platform. After all, you can always expand to other platforms when you’re more established. Interact with your audience - Have your audience do the heavy lifting by creating contests with prizes for completing tasks such as “Share on Facebook”, “Pin on Pinterest”. It’s genius - your contest will run itself! Lights, Camera, Caption! - Did you know that 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound? Captions make videos accessible at any place or time. Not captioning means less viewers watching through to the end. Test, test, test! - Every audience reacts differently. Find out what works best by tracking which content generates the most engagement. Tell YOUR Story - People love people. Entertain followers by showing your human side. People don’t buy into brands – they buy into the story behind brands. Use your story to reinforce your brand’s message and the things that you stand for. Don’t over-promote - You don’t want to blatantly promote yourself in EVERY post. Make content that folks will actually enjoy and need to ascertain. Go Live! - Did you know that Facebook users watch live videos 3 times longer than pre-uploaded ones? Answer questions on the spot and notify followers when ‘live’ so they can tune in. Forget your follower count - It means nothing if your followers are not engaging with your content and reacting to your posts - prioritise engagement and more followers will come naturally! Build credibility - Just given a customer great service? Ask them to ‘check in’ or tag you in their photos. Proving your reliability goes a long way towards consumer confidence. 70/30 golden rule - Share others’ content 70% of the time, but share your own branded or promotional content 30% of the time. Too much to do and digest? To build your social media / online / website presence Reach out to your expert partner Plus Group Int’l Ltd. You will enjoy the experience as much as the final product! sales@printplus.com.hk | www.printplus.com.hk | Tel: (852) 2333 4421 | FB, IG, LI, YT

From Phrases To Sentences

Two Simple Ways To Get Your Child Talking Children move from using only single words and then begin to put two words together. They may say, “Doggy run”, “Mummy bread” or “me eat”. From here we want their sentences to grow. Expansion and extension are two ways for you to help your child develop their expressive language. Language expansion ‘expands’ the utterances of your child by you ‘repeating’ back what your child has said but using proper grammar. You expand the phrases, acknowledge your child, maintain the meaning and keep the words that your child has already used. Child: Doggy run. (when they see a dog running in the park or in a book or cartoon) Adult: Yes! The dog is running. Child: Big dog. Adult: Yes. The dog is big! Apart from making the phrases into complete sentences, adding new information to the existing phrases helps elaborate and enrich what your child has said. Language extension ‘extends’ the utterances of your child by using proper grammar and also introduces new vocabulary. Child: Baby cry. Adult: Yes. The baby’s crying. He is thirsty. Child: Baby juice. Adult: Yes. The baby is drinking juice. It’s orange juice. Try incorporating these strategies throughout the day, e.g. bath time, snack time, in the playground. Keep it natural and use engaging intonation to stress the key words that you want your child to ‘learn’. Don’t make your child repeat you – it is enough for them to hear what you say. Have fun together and make the interactions enjoyable and meaningful!

The Child Development Centre is a not-for-profit organisation officially constituted in 1978. We provide various support in English and Chinese, through assessments; speech and occupational therapies; sensory integration, social skills and school readiness programmes amongst others, to a wide spectrum of young children with additional developmental or educational needs.

The Humble Kati Roll In 1932, a small eatery called Nizam’s, located in Calcutta, India, created a dish that they simply named ‘The Roll’; chargrilled juicy meats and vegetables wrapped in a flaky paratha flatbread, drizzled with tangy chutney and topped with crunchy fresh salad. As word of this tasty creation spread through Bengal and beyond, the roll quickly became a national hit. The popular dish was dubbed the ‘Kati Roll’, named for the wooden skewers that the meats and vegetables were cooked on. Typically found in and around busy Markets, Offices, School and Business districts the true test of any good Indian kati stall is often the queue of people jockeying for position at break time. Once a “hot kati and a cold drink” are in hand the street side Indian style “working lunch” commences, a common site across the land finds businessmen finishing discussions, students sharing notes or exhausted shoppers refueling and strategising their next moves. Clattering trams, wandering city dwelling livestock, piercingly loud car horns and hawkers yelling rock bottom prices adding invaluable character to complete what can best be described as a “typical Indian street style experience”. Although the true origins of this ubiquitous street food is undoubtedly Calcutta, the bustling streets of India from North to South, East and West are dotted with countless holein-the-wall eateries, each offering their own trademark Kati Rolls and an unflinching claim to the ownership of the ‘original’ recipe citing distant aunts and uncles as the true founders.

Advanced School Research for Smart Parents We often do say that choosing a school is an emotional decision. Within reason. Yet, before we get into lengthy debates on the choice of curriculum, it’s important that the schools on our shortlist are robust and are not about to go bust! This is especially important nowadays where new private schools are opening all the time. So, before you entrust your little ones to apparently trustworthy and qualified educators, do some digging. What Is Due Diligence? In the financial world, due diligence involves a comprehensive examination of a company before making a decision - usually a financial one. Many parents pore over annual reports to decide which stocks, shares, and funds to invest in, yet - surprisingly - do not spend a lot of time researching the organisation that operates a school they are considering for their child. Lots of information is readily available and some require a little more time/expense. To embark on a canny school investigation (CSI), consider the following areas: LICENSING Check that the school is licensed - and for the correct age of children. Then, we check the licence covers each of the premises on which the school operates, with individuals’ names and company names on invoices matching the licence holder. If there is no match, find out why. ENROLMENT You’ll want to know that enrollment is healthy; that a new school is growing and an established school is not shrinking. A school may not be completely forthcoming with this information but there are ways to find out. STAFF QUALITY Spot check members of staff - check out their LinkedIn profiles and check their credentials. Search for previous and current vacancies advertised on job boards to understand what sort of qualifications and experience the school requires. At Top Schools, we will conduct a thorough search including all these areas. When you trust us to place your child in a top school, you can be sure that we, in turn, trust any school we are recommending. www.topschools.asia

Better You Communication, Better the Quality of your Life! A big part of communications is when we have differing or opposing views... these are communicated via arguments and /or discussions. Most importantly how do we handle them and then move onto resolving them in an aimicable manner. What’s the difference between arguments and discussions? The difference in these words lies in the usage and the connotation, or shade of meaning, behind each word. Surely, all our life, many difficulties, irritations, frustrations, criticisms and complaints have come up and have been solved; but many disagreeable problems are often still unresolved. Notice which style has been used by the situations around you? And which is the most valuable style to use… Is it by arguments or discussions? Discussions must make each one express their opinion. Never attack any person by name; just attack the problem towards the best solutions. If many are shy to reply in the open its best to express themselves on paper, without signing their name. Some people say they are honest to share their thoughts and feelings - That’s fine, as long as their volume does not go high, and no one’s tone gets rude. Arguments are often angry disputes or disagreements. Choose your arguments wisely. Some arguments arouse resentment that last for many hours or days as they feel disrespected. Allow others to win too... make sure you see both points of view. Aristocratic people speak with a high degree of calm - So be calm; Respect people’s opinions. They have a right to express themselves too. So, stick to discussion mode. Remind each other, ‘we can we discuss this calmly, or on another day, when we are both calmer’. Act calm, be calm; Destress each other by valuable discussions in a calm way to get the best options for long lasting relationships and mutual successes. And lastly, when discussions and arguments go the wrong way - change the topic to… now what’s next - let’s do something else - how about tea or coffee?! Zoom and Doom “You are on mute” “Can you turn on your mute” “Can’t see you” We have all experienced the Zoom call which is rather less than perfect. and I’m sure gentle reader you are not guilty of any of the above, just like me. But ……… occasionally we do forget, and our zoom call is doomed to failure. The good news is that we can use Zoom. Meet or the like to our advantage. This leads me to a Top 10 Tips on Virtual meetings: 1. Get dressed - Yes, we can only see your top half, but the time you stand up to get your cup of tea is the time your colleagues get a real eyeful - soon to be viral. 2. Mute your audio and turn of camera by default. 3. Beware backgrounds - although you may have a wonderful wardrobe, I don’t want to peer into it. Choose a suitable, unique, or plain background – please no more Golden Gate bridge. 4. Set a profile pic. 5. Set a full profile name. 6. Record with permission – just in case you need a record. 7. Look at the camera. One of the hardest things to do since you may be tempted to look at the gallery. But you look awfully shifty with no direct eye contact. 8. Have your cheat “post it” notes around screens- answers to questions, agenda etc. 9. Learn the keyboard shortcuts, the list is long, like space bar for un/mute. 10. Place all in the same virtual background with immersive view.

Virtual meetings will be with us long after Covid 19 has left. We may as well get used to them, practice and become proficient. “Can you hear me now? “

Coping with Grief and Loss The COVID-19 epidemic has left many causalities to grief! The world is grieving the loss of loved ones, the inability to be with family and friends, and perhaps the loss of security. We all experience grief and loss at some point in life because to live is to suffer on the one hand and, on the other hand, experience immense joy. A loss will likely be one of the most stressful and overwhelming challenges we face in life. Each of us grieve and experience loss differently. It can be gradual or sudden and intense, even driving us to the edge with a constellation of emotions of fear, anger, remorse, and sorrow. In time, most of the grief and sadness subsides. For some, there can be complicated and unremitting grief. Seeking therapy is an avenue that must be considered to move on. Processing Grief in Therapy Loss can hit us like a curveball - our strength and resilience are tested beyond our perceived limits, as we may not be prepared for the magnitude of our grief. This can be intense and unbearable, leading us to a place of despair and a deep void. EMDR Therapy in Overcoming Grief In looking for a way to move beyond grief, you may want to consider eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). EMDR’s ability to create improvement in a short amount of time rests in its focus on treating unprocessed memories, causing stress and anxiety. Our brain stores memories in neural networks in a group of interconnected brain cells that fire together. EMDR harnesses the brain’s neuroplasticity to create new neural pathways to reinterpret how the brain processes anxious experiences, thoughts, and emotional disturbances. EMDR is an empirically validated and clinically researched treatment that uses eye movements that mimic those made during the REM sleep phase to desensitize and reduce the emotional charge relating to disturbing memories, allowing the client to move beyond the traumatic event. It is a highly effective form of therapy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma, anxiety, depression, and phobias. “Life is a balance between holding on and letting go.” - Rumi Nivedita Ramanujam founder of Inner Compass Psychotherapy, is a certified psychotherapist, psycho-traumatologist, hypnotherapist, mindfulness & meditation facilitator and registered clinical supervisor. # ItsOkay! “It’s Okay not to be Okay!”

itsokay

The message is simple, yet powerful. We are fundamentally encouraging you to say okay to your feelings without judgement, allow yourselves to be vulnerable, and get that it’s normal. It’s okay to move away from the illusion that it’s possible to be happy all the time, or the need to be perfect. There is so much value in allowing ourselves to just ‘feel’, and complete the experience of emotions rather than judging them. By the time you have felt something, it’s also too late to say to yourselves (or anyone else) “don’t feel sad”.

All species naturally feel angry, sad, and scared (babies and animals feel it too). It’s not ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’ to experience these emotions. It’s only our judgment that has deemed it bad or wrong. If we can take emotions as a natural part of life and allow ourselves to fully feel, then each emotion will have a start and an end point, and we can move on. We have primary emotions that are actually here to help us survive. We don’t judge happiness or excitement, but we have judged fear, anger and sadness. - Fear helps to protect us from dangerous situations. - Anger helps us place boundaries for self-preservation. - Sadness helps us release and cleanse our system. So, instead of placing more rules on how we ‘should’ be, let’s say ‘okay’ to the way we feel and acknowledge these emotions when we experience them. You can do this by simply scanning yourself, acknowledging how you feel, and allowing yourself to complete the experience of that emotion through deep breathing until the emotional charge has gone.

A simple video to help reiterate the message It’s OKAY!

Learn the most powerful relaxation technique – The Shavasana Pose In a time-crunch in this active, overstimulated world, you don’t get the chance to be present in the moment. This relaxation technique brings about a complete resignation of the body to the laws of gravity, the mind to nature and your energy is transferred to deep dynamic breathing. Your voluntary muscles relax and transfer energy to involuntary parts. This transfer of energy by voluntary action causing the involuntary reaction produces the necessary equilibrium for renewal of strength. Recommended to be done 1 to 5 minutes daily. What is it? • In Sanskrit, ‘sava’ means corpse & ‘asana’ means posture. • Shavasana might look like a nap - But it’s actually a fully conscious pose aimed at being awake, yet completely relaxed. Assimilate the Benefits? • Improves focus WHEN DISTRACTED. • Lowers blood pressure WHEN ANGRY. • Reduces anxiety WHEN STRESSED. • Prevents fearing the unknown WHEN UNCERTAIN. • Rejuvenates your body WHEN TIRED. • Good for insomnia WHEN DIFFICULTY SLEEPING. Perform the Corpse pose? 1. Lie down facing the ceiling. 2. Keep the arms and legs “starfish like”. 3. Close the eyes. 4. Avoid any body movement. 5. Let the breath follow its natural cycle. 6. Consciously withdraw attention, by stages and relax the 16 vital zones of the body as these are easily prone to stress: (1) Tips of your toes, (2) ankles, (3) knees, (4) thighs & arms, (5) anus, (6) reproductive organs, (7) navel, (8) stomach, (9) heart, (10) neck, (11) lips, (12) tip of your nose, (13) eyes, (14) space between your eyebrows, (15) forehead and (16) brain. 7. Rest for as long as you like. 8. Done? Breathe deeply, wiggle the fingers/toes; move the wrists/ankles; stretch! 9. Bend the knees and turn onto the right side. 10. Keep the eyes closed and use the arms to sit upright. Notice a sense of calmness and stillness within. Whatever happens around you, know that this sense of calmness is always available to you! Buying Home Appliances? Make Sure you Read This!

Picking out a new appliance can be intimidating… be a smart consumer! With ever evolving products, technology trends there is certainly a lot more factors to consider. Buying guide: • Ensure you are buying a Grade 1 model of any appliance as approved by EMSD of the Hong Kong government. • Measure twice, buy once – ensuring an appliance fits your space is critical. Go the extra mile… example: in which direction does the fridge door open up (you can request a change so some models) and how far it goes will ensure you have a safe buy. Air conditioners: Ask professional advice to calculate how many horsepower your aircon should have to cool your required space. When you consider the cost, it’s not only the cost of the actual air conditioner that needs to be considered, but also the cost of delivery, installation and often scaffolding is needed. Get a professional to do a site visit if this facility is available to you. Refrigerator: Don’t look at the capacity alone – check out the sales label to see how much space is allocated to the fridge and how much to the freezer, then determine if this combination works best for your family depending on your current usage. Remember, a big and tall fridge doesn’t mean it has the best capacity available! Various models differ by 10 to 15% in capacity so ensure you check out as many models as you can. Look at new tech – the latest have ‘Inverter Technology’ which gives a long-term saving in your electricity bill. Washing Machines: Check for the energy & water saving label and go for Grade 1. For larger families go for the largest capacity you can afford. Always use trusted brands of detergents and follow instructions; ‘more powder’ doesn’t always mean ‘cleaner’… you will end up with residue all over the machine and your clothes too! Remember - overloading the machine and leaving coins in clothing spoils the machine which results in costly repairs. Top tips: • Use a reliable sales agent who will arrange to take away your old appliance. • Recycling and collection can also be arranged by www.weee.com.hk

Top tip: Start with a minimum of 3 days of exercise. 2. Nutrition - Nutrition is fuel. It’s not just about what you eat but also about being realistic too. Eating nutritious food that will fuel you 80% of the time whilst still enjoying the foods you love the other 20%. Cutting out certain food groups is just not sustainable long term. It’s important to note too that your appetite might also increase at certain times during your menstrual cycle. Top tip: Eat protein at every meal. 3. Sleep - The health repercussions of a lack of sleep over a long period of time are staggering. It can be the catalyst for eventually why we give up on our goals. Aiming to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep is a good start. Top tip: Set a reminder an hour before bedtime to start winding down. 4. Movement – Movement is key, even in its simplest form of walking and will account for the majority of your daily energy expenditure. Schedule that walk in your diary. Take a break, pop on your headphones and get those steps in to help you improve not just your physical health but also your mental health too. Top tip: Get your steps done early before other things get in the way. 5. Water - So simple but so important. Can improve alertness, energy, help gauge your appetite and much more. Aiming for 2-3 litres a day is a good starting point. Top tip: Drink from a bottle rather than a glass so you can keep track easier. It’s time for every woman to start living their best life!

Eating Right the Vedic Way In today’s world where you find a new study every second day refuting the previous one, it sometimes is difficult to decide what to believe. Ancient Indian science of Ayurvedic nutrition has stood the test of time and has shown great results in disease prevention and management. It is a personalized rather than the general approach of modern nutrition. Broadly speaking, there are three main body types as described in Ayurveda... Vata Body: If you are slender, with a delicate bone structure and dry hair and skin and irregular eating habits, and gain and lose weight easily, you are a Vata body type. Avoid: Foods that are too bitter in taste or raw food like cold salads, large quantities of fatty foods, honey and dry food. Go for: Regular warm cooked meals, natural sweets like dates, and nourishing meals. Oats rice and wheat will balance the Vata Dosha.

vata pitta kapha

Pitta Body People of this type are generally of medium built, with a reddish tinge to skin. They have a penetrating voice and are ambitious people but can be short tempered. Avoid: Aubergines, garlic, radishes, almond oil, buckwheat and corn. Sour foods should also be avoided. Go for: Cooling drinks and food, green leafy vegetables, pears , plums, cherries and barley in grains. Kapha Body These people are often overweight, have a smooth skin, and strong joints and muscles. They are calm content people. Avoid: sweet and oily food, starchy vegetables like potatoes, butter oil and sugar of all types. Go For: Dry, light and warming foods. Salads and green leafy vegetables, grains like quinoa buckwheat and couscous.

The application of Ayurvedic nutrition is precise and well proven and highly beneficial.

Mental Well-Being, Suicide Prevention September is Suicide Prevention month. Per the HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (HKU), 1019 individuals died by suicide in 2020, this number is an all-time high since 2003. 1. Over 53% of the suicide cases were from the 20 - 59 age group, the most common factors include lack of job security, uncertainty of the future, and the challenging pandemic lifestyle. 2. The COVID -19 pandemic has exacerbated suicidal tendencies. 3. It is reflected that men are more prone to dying from suicide than women. (Samaritans Befrienders, 2020)

What can you do to help someone who is suicidal? 1. If your friend or loved one has made a suicidal plan and has taken steps for suicide: Don’t leave the person alone. Try to keep the person as calm as possible and try to get immediate help. Call 999 or take the person to the emergency room immediately. 2. If the situation is not that immediate, but you suspect someone is suicidal: Talk to them about it. Mentioning suicide or discussing it, is not going to push anyone over the edge and make them take action. 3. People who receive support from caring friends and family and who have access to mental health services are less likely to act on their suicidal impulses then are those who are isolated from support. Self Care Menu Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness and improve energy. Do something you enjoy List three things you are proud of yourself for doing Carve out some time for relaxation Exercise Give yourself self-compassion when you are stressed or when facing a difficult situation “I believe in you.” “I love you.” “You can get through this.”

Savvy Sale Shopping High-end designer sales are happening daily in Hong Kong, these are advertised widely across a multitude of channels year-round. Here are some tips from Hong Kong’s shopping queen on how to score up to 90% off that fabulous timeless pair of Louboutin boots, Prada handbag or Burberry coat that you were coveting last season. 1. Be early! The early bird gets the worm; in this case the early bird gets the best deals! Most sales open at 8am. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early to avoid being stuck in line. 2. Take a list! Go through your wardrobe and make a list of the items you need for a targeted shopping experience. It is very easy to get side-tracked and end up with things that you will never wear. 3. Avoid trends! Go for classic and timeless styles unless the item fully reflects your personal style, no matter the season. 4. Know the brand! There is no shame in visiting the boutiques to try a few things on to familiarize yourself with their sizes and cuts so you can save precious time trying things on at the sale. 5. Bypass the fitting rooms! Wear comfortable clothing such as leggings or a tank top to avoid lining up unnecessarily. 6. Do your research! Sometimes the item you are considering is still cheaper elsewhere. • • • •

Do you want to avoid the crowds and stress of shopping? Are you a busy bee who has no time to line up for sales? Do you live too far away to justify the trip? Do you not want to be seen shopping for discounted items?

The Magic of Jal Neti Pots Tired? Sleepy? Suffering from insomnia, asthma, sinusitis, skin allergies or just simply want to slow down your aging process? Unbelievably, all that is needed are: a Neti Pot and a pinch of sea salt (equivalent salinity comparable to tears) inside a cup of lukewarm distilled or drinking water. Pour the water inside the pot and voila, you are ready for your refreshing Kriya Yoga. One just has to insert the nozzle to either side of the nostril and wait until the water flows out from the other side of the nasal passage. This is to be followed by Kapal Bhati (forceful exhale) breathwork and a very simple lymphatic massage. Jal Neti is a technique that was used by yogis to stay disease-free, and most importantly to use the breath well for their yogic practices without any blockages. Just how brushing the teeth is dental hygiene, the practice of Jal Neti is nasal hygiene. This technique uses water to purify and clean the nasal path, right from the nostrils to the throat. According to the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (Vol. 11), Neti helps in: 1. Preventing and managing upper respiratory tract diseases. 2. Less chance of needing to use antibodies. 3. Alleviating sinusitis and rhinosinusitis. 4. Less allergic conditions. 5. Cleaning the eye ducts and thus, may help improve vision. 6. Improving skin disorders. 7. Improving the presence of mind and intelligence. Additionally, research conducted in 2020 by the SMS Medical College in India claims that regular practice of Jal Neti may even help one to fight Covid-19. If the above benefits can be obtained with the use of a reasonably-priced pot, why isn’t it more widespread? The answer lies in one word: fear. The fear of not knowing how to use the pot and imagining getting choked by it prevents many from even venturing this amazing practice. Invest in your own Jal Neti Pot and experience a rewarding boost to your mental and physical health!

Accessibility Awareness for HK’s Aging Population The prevalence of disability, special needs and chronic illness is on the rise in Hong Kong, yet our city lacks facilities, services and qualified professionals to meet this growing demand. It’s predicted that over the next twenty years, 40% of our population will be senior citizens. People with disabilities and special needs (PWD/SEN) face a number of persistent challenges, including: • Higher incidence of trauma and negative life events; • Higher risk of poor mental health; • Increased feelings of isolation and loneliness from stigma and social exclusion; • Unmitigated stress and feelings of helplessness due to lack of wellbeing support services As members of Hong Kong community, what can the average citizen do to alleviate these issues? Accessibility awareness and sensitivity are key to break down attitudinal barriers. Here are some tips: Treat others as you wish to be treated — There is no need to fear PWD/SEN or regard them as being inferior. Each person is an intelligent being with something to contribute to our society, and just happen to be impaired in one of life’s major functions. Honour and recognise this. Use people first language — Say, “JJ has autism” or “CC uses a wheelchair.” Take away the labels. Disability may be a part of the person, but it’s not who the person is on the inside. There is a whole personality and soul there. Consider environmental needs for PWD/SEN when planning events — Most PWD/SEN are told to use a back entrance that is usually dingy and dirty. If you are hosting an event, pay attention to the environment and building accessibility. PWD/SEN do not want to be patronised or tokenised — Disability is simply something they have learned to live with, and one piece of the wider puzzle that is their life. If you want to offer assistance to a person with a disability, ask if they need it, but try not to get offended if they do not want help. Bottom line, there is nothing to fear about PWD/SEN. They operate differently to you and I, but they are incredible human beings who have so much to offer our world and our society. Every one of us can be certain that we will experience some form of disability in our lifetimes — whether through illness, injury or age. Think about it.

Create Balance with Feng Shui We all live fast lives in this world of instant gratification and satisfaction. We wonder why we get sick more often; we are not as successful as we would like to be, and mental health is at the forefront for so many, making day to day living more challenging than ever. Your Personal Living and working space have never been more important. As we continue to live with the effects of Covid Life still may appear out of sync, yet we have much to embrace moving forward towards 2024 when we will be witnessing a new Feng Shui Cycle. Every 20 years we experience a major shift of energy influenced by a particular element, therefore its time to accept change - be flexible and look at how to embrace the future with a renewed perspective. Feng Shui practice and principles recognize the importance of the harmony of yin and yang energies. We believe that all things in the universe are either female YIN or male YANG...the dark, quiet yin and the bright and boisterous yang knowing that one without the other cannot exist. We cannot have the warmth of summer without the coldness of winter...or the darkness of night without the bright morning light. But they must be in balance and that extends to us – our bodies both emotional and physical. When this balance is present everything works so it’s important to create such a balance in your home and in your personal life. Lighting is one of the most important factors of any space, when correctly used in accordance with your astrological sign it can affect our emotions and decision making. Correctly positioned plants help boost clarity and personal growth. 1. Always keep hallways well-lit for harmony 2. Lights directed upwards support decision making 3. Always change a blown light bulb immediately to prevent missed opportunities

Social Enterprises Can Make a Difference in Our Communities What is a Social Enterprise? A social enterprise (SE) is a business driven by specific social objectives serving as its primary purpose. Some social objectives could be: • Providing services to support the community (for instance, helping the elderly) or producing products needed by the community • Creating employment and training opportunities for the socially and economically disadvantaged • Protecting the environment with conscious production These businesses seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. Their profits are principally used to fund social programs. Social Enterprises in Hong Kong The roots of SE in Hong Kong can be found in the 1980s. Over time they have evolved from working to provide employment and solutions to meet social and environmental needs in the city. It is interesting to note that 49% of the local SEs have been operating for four years or less. This significant rise from 2013 onwards coincides with the establishment of the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund). While social enterprises which serve some of the most vulnerable populations have played a critically important role in responding to the pandemic, it has also led to new challenges for enterprises that have had to pivot their business models to stay in operation. Dr. Mask is one such local SE that was set up in 2020. Dr. Howard Ling, the CEO at Dr. Mask says, their business objective is making high quality face masks, while their social objective is the employment of ethnic minorities. Dr. Mask employees with the Zubin Cracker

The Zubin Crackers are being manufactured at Dr. Mask’s factory. All proceeds raised go to The Zubin Foundation’s work for HK’s marginalised ethnic minorities in mental health, support for women and girls and providing jobs & opportunities.
