President 2017-18 | Jean-Francois Destexhe Dear Fellow Rotarians and Distinguished Guests, It is my great honor to preside over the Rotary Club this year 2017-2018. Rotary International has been an incredible organization for the last 112 years enabling people to meet from all countries, horizons, ages, professions and ethnicities, for one common goal: Service to the Community. Rotary has helped me being more open, meet great people and be a better person altogether, using some of my time, energy and skill in raising funds for the needy in Hong Kong and abroad. It has opened my eyes and in that sense, Rotary gives more than it takes. Our Rotary Club Kowloon Golden Mile is unique by its size, its diversity and its energy when it comes to raising funds and serve others. Our Annual Charity Ball is our biggest fund raiser of the year, I wish to thank you for joining us tonight and show so much generosity. I also wish to thank our President Elect Maki Wan and her Committee for putting together such a great Ball! Enough said, let us enjoy the night, the great food and drinks, the friendship and the amazing entertainment. Don’t forget to buy your raffles tickets! Yours in Rotary,

Jean-Francois Destexhe President Rotary Club Kowloon Golden Mile

President Elect 2017-18 | Maki Wan Distinguished Guests, Fellow Rotarians and Friends: Ten years ago, I was invited to the Rotary Club Kowloon Golden Mile for the first time. I have become a part of this wonderful Club since, with so many life-long friends here. Today, I am proud and honored to Chair the 31st Annual Charity Ball. First of all, on behalf of the Ball Committee, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for gracing our Ball tonight. I sincerely thank you for your support to this important fund raising event of the year. In Rotary, we are all volunteers with the same mission that we need to do our part to make a difference in our community. We focus on the needs of the underprivileged people, we provide free medical check for elderly, we care about the street sleepers, we also extend our hands to people living indeveloping countries. Last year, we hadestablished our own community center in Cambodia. We are so proud of our dear fellow Rotarians, Tina and Lorenzo, who have since relocated to Cambodia, for taking care of the project. We are looking forward to see this Center, where we can serve thousands of the underprivileged local residents. It will become the sign of the vibrancy of the community. Being the largest Rotary Clubin Hong Kong, KGM is truly blessed for being surrounded by so many amazing people. There are no words that suffice to effectively thankour title sponsor of the ball, the late Mr. Rusy M Shroff, and Mrs. Purviz R Shroff, for their generous endeavor and continuous support to our Club. Your support will ensure the continued success of our international and community services, as the need for those cherished programs grow stronger. We do believe when courage and generosity hold hands, all things are possible. Last but not least, please allow me to acknowledge and thank a number of committee members for their hard work for this event, they include: our Honorary Supervisor, PDG David Harilela, PP Elissa Cohen, PP Rajkumar Daswani, IPP Dave Andrews, Rotarian Brian Hodgson, PP Neerja Sujanani, Rotarian Rani Lakhani, PP Vincent Lam, PP M. V. Ramadasan, Rotarian Gautam Daswani, PP Cassidy Lam, Rotarian Romu Bellani, Rotarian Sonia Samtani and also our President Jean-Francois Destexhe. Thank you again for being with us today, and I wish you a great and enjoyable evening! Yours in Rotary Dr. Maki Wan President Elect & Fundraising Chair (2018-19)

District Governor 2017-18 | Hing Wang Fung Dear President Jean-Francois, Ball Chair/PE Maki and Members of Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile, It is my great pleasure to send this congratulatory message to you on the auspicious occasion of your esteemed club’s Annual Ball scheduled to take place on 3rd Mar 2018. Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is not only the club with the largest membership in Rotary District 3450, but also a strong and active club as demonstrated by the many humanitarian service projects conducted by you in Hong Kong and other places, and your active participation in District and Rotary International meetings and activities. Your club is also a good source of rotary leaders providing strong support to the District. Your members have been serving the District in different positions such as District Governor, Assistant Governor and Deputy Assistant Governor and as Chair and members of various district committees. By initiating and leading international rotary projects such as THE ONE and the Rotary Global Reward program, your club has made significant contribution to raising the public image of both Rotary International and Rotary District 3450. Your capability, dedication and commitment and the good you have done to the community are well appreciated both within and outside Rotary. This has been and will continue to be marked by the great support given to your club’s activities by other rotary clubs as well as other organizations and individuals in the community. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your contribution to Rotary and the community and wish you and your families every success and happiness in the coming years. Yours in Rotary Hing Wang Fung District Governor 2017-18

International Services This year Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile has reached out to key areas where it can really make a difference. We have given funds to Children in Gambia for their education and to Congo to support the rape victims who are as young as 5 years old. We have also reached into India, Nepal, Philippines and last but not least to Cambodia where our Rotarians Lorenzo and Tina have moved to make a new Community centre which will help thousands of people in the surrounding villages, providing them training, education, medical support together with our local NGO and Government support. We will be spending for these projects in total USD50,000 which is not enough as these projects take time which means we need your support to make them sustainable . Every dollar you give today will have a impact. Please support! Thank you from bottom of my heart! PP Sunny Dass International Services Director

Preserve Planet Earth Initiatives RCKGM has been active in environmental issues since 2007, when during the year of PP Carola Chard, we sponsored .the first composting toilet to Ark Eden on Lantau. This project enabled the Eco-education camp to expand and have more kids and students attend the camp. In June 2017 we arranged a KGM family visit to Ark Eden, we found the eco toilet in good working order and planted a tree in the garden which makes good progress, though it has regular trims when visited by a hungry cow. In 2016/17 we held several eco talks on how we can make a difference in our homes and workplace to reduce waste, and also organised to participate in an introduction to Hong Kongs’s native snakes hosted. by snake specialist William Sargent. We visited Kadoorie Farm with a group of enthusiastic KGM’ers during a T3 warning in severe weather to explore our local flora and Fauna. Photo proof is KGM is unstoppable when it comes to the environmental protection. On August 20 2017 a few brave KGM’ers and their family joined the first District Tree planting Day at Ark Eden together with DG WH Fung and our President JF in soaring summer heat. This was the opening event of the tree-planting intiative of the District PPE Committee, and 270 trees were planted that day.

Preserve Planet Earth ..contd In November 2017 PP Carola Chard chaired The second District 3450 Preserve Planet Earth Forum with the theme of Creating Green Urban Spaces for Education & Sustainable Living The event venue was generously co-sponsored by the Australian International School in Kowloon Tong, which was made possible with the kind help of Rotarienne Lorraine Kennedy. We had a good turnout of participants, some all the way from Macau. District Governor WH Fung, shared with us the plan for every Rotarian to plant a tree, which we are already actively doing since August. He emphasized the importance towork together to meet the climate and environmental challenges in the community. He cited the success of the polio eradication as an example of how much great work can be achieved when Rotarians take the lead. The Guest speaker Deborah Kuh, Head of Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the HKSAR Government gave a dynamic presentation sharing her ideas how we can make the Hong Kong urban areas more holistic, inclusive and sustainable in landscape design, and she invites the community to bring ideas to and suggestions and support these initiatives for long term benefit. Matthew Pryor, Head of the Division of Landscape Architecture of The University of Hong Kong spoke about the environmental and emotional benefits of operating a small patch of rooftop farm. His research shows farms springing up independently and we have so much suitable farmable roof space available in Hong Kong that we could completely change the rooftop cityscape, improve air quality dramatically, and create what he described as the happiness factor of urban farming – the joy of harvesting your own piece of fruit or vegetable, no matter how small. The Australian School students gave us a wonderful presentation why they love their school’s roof garden, and how being up there for recreation, and lying on the grass and looking at the sky is revitalizing them between classes. They gave us a tour of the roof garden during our break, and inspite of the rain, spirits were high and the participants enjoyed the students’ enthusiastically explaining all the features and plants. KGM’s PP CK Tsang JP School Supervisor of Ying Wa Primary School / Board Member Ying Wa College spoke about the early stages and the challenges to obtain all the permits and government finance to create what is today a fully operational rooftop farm at Ying Wa Primary School. He attributes the success to the close collaboration between the school principal, teachers, parents and students, creating a fun and creative learning experience to grow and harvest their own crops. Pui Kwan Chu, Founder of The Organic Farm / Past Chair of SEED / Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation /The Hong Kong Organic Farming Association shared how we can make little changes and take small steps to grow our own food, one little pot at a time, so we can appreciate our food and become more selfreliant.

Sponsor the GIFT OF SIGHT for an eye surgery in India to restore them to sight, gifting them with a new life and reason for living. From 2011 to 2016, we have examined 4437 patients providing them with basic eye care and we have sponsored 1129 operations. Bhopal is the region in India where many years ago there was a Union Carbide gas leak – this left a lot of patients affected with a variety of problems – primarily their eye sight was affected. These poor people that we aim to help are either blind or almost blind and many are possible bread winners for their families. By restoring sight we are able to give them another chance in life to live and to contribute for their own and their community’s development.
