MOTIVATION:
is the driving force by which we achieve our goals. Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic.
PRINT wasn’t made from a time line, it was made out of ideas, creative ideas, that aren’t found in a certain time frame. As you know, time doesn’t stand still, and neither will PRINT when it comes to putting the dopest, coolest, free, ideas on our pages. Motivation is something we all need to work on. Print is no angel. In this issue, these are things that motivated us to press on in times of trouble. We want them to motivate you, as it has us. We want you to know that since we started in OCT ‘10, we’ve looked back once. It was a time when we stopped believing in ourself, and start doubting our abilities. That is always going to happen, but next time we’ll be stronger. We’re PRINT Mag. Welcome to the 5th issue! grafitti scene, and he’s not scared to tell us or anyone. Talking on the
phone with him about ready to put up some work on walls and in galleries, made
us realize this dude isn’t just about taggin’, art is who he is.
KNEE “HOW”
So I’m not going to say your real name, but I know your art name is KNEE. Where did that come from? It’s actually one of my big brothers from the Death Force Crew, he actually hooked me up with the name Knee. What’s up with the Death Force Crew? I also show you rep a Brass Knuckle Crew? Are you in real gangs? (lol) It’s actually a bunch of art crews. Some of them are graffiti bombing crews, crews that go out into the city and tag up the city. Others are trading crews, like trading stickers and other supplies people have.
So tell me more about you work? How did you start graffiti art?
Where would you like to see your art work go?
I actually started drawing back in 2006 in high school. I picked up a drawing book and I started drawing and I fell in love with it.I started doing some crazy typography with some realistic characters with it to compliment the name and to make it stand out.

Are you a natural? Actually I’m a natural born artist Anyone in your family an artist? My mom actually studied art and became a interior designer. Tell me what you put your art on? Walls? Stickers…? I use stickers, black books, canvases. I haven’t gotten into the wall aspect yet, but I’m going to be starting soon so… What materials do you for your art? I’m using spray cans, paint markers, graphic markers. Tell me your inspirations? My biggest inspirations are Jackson Pollack, he’s one of those crazy artist back in the day. He was known into a mad man. He’d come up with some amazing pieces. One of his pieces, the one I usually inspired by, is named Autumn Rhythm. Another one is Robert Williams, the artist not the comedian; he mainly does some crazy things.

Now, what is a sticker show? It’s actually something new to me . One of the people in my crew mentioned to me about a huge art show going down in NYC. He asked me to send over some of my work , so I’m doing a whole bunch of different designs so I can send over to him. So your making your stickers yourself? Yeah, I actually make everyone on my own. I don’t have the kind of money to give to printing companies, so I just do it myself. Your art is so cool. I’m surprised you haven’t gotten picked up yet. Back in the day, in high school, I was hesitant at showing my art. Until recently I was like let’s just post up my stuff on Facebook and let’s see what I get! What would you like to say to the people looking at your art and the PRINT readers? When they can’t read the art, or they can’t understand it, I guess that gives me a better advantage for them to actually study the piece I’ve work on, other then them going “Oh who is this guy?” “What does he do?” I like for people to figure out who I am other than “oh that’s knee’s pieces”. Also I go through different periods, like right now, I’m in a zombie, creature period, so I’m probably going to switch on that. Who knows.

I’m sorry...you said you don’t recycle? It’s okay, a lot of people don’t, but we GOT TO START NOW! Recyclying is beneficial for everyone and everything on the planet. It saves energy, decreases emissions of greenhouse gases, conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals, and helps sustain the environment for future generations. Everyone needs the earth, so why not help it anyway you can!

Welcome to Laundromat Productions

Hanging out at Laundromat Productions was the coolest thing I’ve done in a long time. It felt like I was sitting in musician’s room, right before the Record deal that makes them famous forever. Everyone there had been long time friends, so I was an outsider looking in on a world not many people get to see. Yet. Already winning their first award for producing reggae man Chris Puma’s “Blazin Hot Fyah”, last month at the Virginia Reggae Awards, they also deal in hip hop, rap, contempoary, solid beats and albums. Founded by Nick “Thiller” Millard, and his dad Don Millard in their laundry room, you can come, spit a beat, make a song, all on one load of clothes. But don’t worry, you’ll get a killer song because their motto is “We’re not happy, until your not happy” I sat down with Nick who gave me history on Laundromat Productions.
Print: What came first: Did you want to produce music or did you want to be in front of the mic?
Print: Tell me how you got into music?
Nick: Oh yes, Right now I’m in the studio working with my band A NEWBORN THRILLER so I got a lot of time work with some projects. But at the end of the day I wanna be on a list of venues and go to places I’ve seen or heard about before I leave.
Nick: Wow, well I was only about 4 or 5 and my dad gave me this no string guitar it was play country music professionally 7 nights a weekend. It was the first thing I’ve seen from there I stayed kind of always into music. Singing in the church choir and singing in school plays; I kind of stood out from friends with that one. My sister went off to college to teach music high school level, and that inspired me to advance in my own personal work. My family is all very musical, my mom growing up was in marching band in high school, my dad obviously was a tour musician of sorts and my sister was a vocal professional. So my family really supported me on my music.
Print: Sweet, So tell me how Laundromat started?
Nick: I actually really wanted to be on stage and just be around all the people and to do something crazy. It was very much about the live show for me I feed off it. Playing in front of 50 to 100 kids and playing what they’re interested to hear I think it’s amazing and very enjoyable. After touring and being in a few other bands you get to hear so many other types of music that branches out from indie rock to hip-hop. The more you hear them the more I would want to leave my stamp on the music world for people to be like he did it this way and we enjoyed it. Print: So do you still wanna be in the mic?
Nick: The drummer in my band I’ve known since the 7th grade had to leave due to differences. We lived in the same trailer park together and we used to make silly songs with my Casio keyboard and a radio shack mic. 10 years later we get 9 to 5 jobs and just started to dump all our money into equipment, just piece by piece building up. My parents had a spare room, the laundry room, to do their clothes in, we set up our stuff their so came up with the idea to call it the Laundromat or wash n flow is what we first called it back in the day.

Print: Ha Ha I actually like that; so what kind of music comes out of the Laundromat? Nick: All independent stuff. These are all artist that are very talented in what they do that can’t afford big production studios. So we do it for free. More the labor of love, very much a nonprofit organization. A lot of our stuff is free download pretty much everywhere, check us up online datpiff.com. We have our own website Laundromatva.com were you can download all our mix tapes that we put out for free. Print: So what artist have you worked with already? Nick: Tragic from dope dreamers, front side crew, Don Thomas. Got to work with the Double D’s crew; big ups to Richmond. We’ve worked with Chris Puma with his album blazin hot fire; we did all the tracks within the Laundromat. Print: I see that you won a reward tell me about that. Nick: We did not win we were nominated for an Virginia reggae award for the track blazin hot fire for producer of the year in which it was me and co producer Chris Puma backing by my father who helped finance the project. It was our first dive into the reggae scene. Just to be nominated with other great artistes like stable roots is just absolutely amazing. Print: Where do you see Laundromat going and how soon? Nick: In the next five years we like to be solidified in the VA area and would like to satellite Laundromats in other cities like Chicago and with people in these we’d like to form one company. That way we be able branch out to others people with different genres of music being able to help them out financially with music, and to give the artistes a chances to have fun and that’s what its mainly about the opportunity to be able to expand your music and to have fun
