Project
Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah is a major road in Kuala Lumpur. Our site is situated right in front of a busy road from Kepong to KL. Despite the busy traffic right in front of our site, there is very few passerby that would come along our site. However the community in Sentul range from the young to the retired. With its strong and historical background, there are more retired than the younger in this community. Our studio project is to build a community library to rejuvenate the city as well and reconnect the diverse community with live.

ROOF SYSTEM
Boatbuilding workshop / Brown+ Brown
Aberdeen-based Brown + Brown designed the facility for Portsoy, a village on Scotland's north coast. It occupies the only two blocks in the historic harbour that aren't heritage-listed, both of which were formerly derelict and in dire need of renovation. The brief was for a community boatbuilding centre to be run by the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival, a local charity. The requirements were for it to be robust and hardwearing, but also to fit in with its setting and offer enough space for its purpose.
TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
MATERIAL USED
The modern interior is the double-glazed curtain wall, which spans the empty space.
ADVANTAGES
It comprises both glue-laminated beams and plywood panels – materials that the workers were already familiar with using.
Double glazed glass Aluminum frame
Plywood panels
Metal plate
SITE INSTALLATION & DETAILING
1.Natural Sunlight The skylight on top allows natural sun lighting penetrates into the space. 2.Contemporary Design The mixed used of timber and metal in the interior creates fresh look inside which is undetectable by the exterior which is made of stonework. 3.Low Cost Material used are easily found and it’s familiar construction method for the people there
DISADVANTAGES 1.Corrosion The used of metal may cause corrosion.
REASON OF CHOICE It brings natural sunlight into the building and brings live into the library.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
L- House / Architects Collective
Living surrounded by the brilliance of natural light. The new home for a young family is located on the outskirts of a small settlement in the South of Austria’s Burgenland region and is harmoniously placed into the hilly landscape. The client wished for a contemporary living experience that is blended into the surrounding landscape. The result is a surprising habitat that reflects the way the family lives incorporating design quality, sustainability and functionality in everyday life.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
MATERIAL USED
Steel structure with Timber Finishes The lightweight house is particularly suited to creating cost effective, flexible design solutions to the challenges of steep sites and reactive soils. Appropriate design strategies that include alternative sources of thermal mass can also deliver best practice, passive design outcomes — often with lower embodied energy than traditional high mass systems. This can result in lower life cycle energy. Timber from sustainable sources provides a renewable building material that takes in carbon from the atmosphere while growing and stores it for the life of the building. Timber Decking Decking planks • Various local and imported timbers available. • Planks generally 20mm in thickness from 65mm to 145mm in width.

Joists Joists are 114mm x 38mm C.C.A treated V.5 Structural pine, layed out with centres of 400mm on top of bearers. As the 114mm x 38mm will only span a distance of 1,700 Different size joists are used for a greater span (See Sundecks) Joists are toe nailed to the bearers using 4' galvanised nails.

DISADVANTAGES 1.Corrosion The used of metal may cause corrosion.
REASON OF CHOICE Timber is used widely in the library because it can absorb the sound, making the library a quieter environment
FACADE SYSTEM
Mercedes Benz Museum / UN Studio
The new Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart is a distinctive city landmark that impressively highlights the innovative power of one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers. Large glass facades in the storeys dedicated to cars and trucks permit a maximum level of transparency and offer optimal views of the surrounding landscape. The contrast between the open and closed spaces can thus also be read from the building’s facade

DISADVANTAGES
TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM
Glass Facade
Curtain Wall System with spider glass construction The most popular glass system for application in structural glass facades is the bolted version. The glass panel requires perforations to accommodate specialized bolting hardware. Specially designed off-the-shelf hardware systems are readily available, or custom components can be designed. Cast stainless steel spider fittings are most commonly used to tie the glass to the supporting structure, although custom fittings are often developed for larger facade projects. The glass must be designed to accommodate bending loads and deflections resulting from the fixing method. For overhead applications, insulated-laminated glass panels require the fabrication of 12 holes per panel, which can represent a cost constraint on some projects. VENEER truss system Adjustable aluminium sub-construction with modular click rail This option uses commercially available systems without additional modifications. The advantage is economical and simple installation (alignment takes place in two steps) The structurally non-effective modular click rail must be fixed to the vertical L-section and at every panel support.. Metal Cladding
VENEER truss system Truss systems employ a planar truss design, often in a hierarchical system that combines element types and tension components. Truss designs vary widely, with an emphasis on fine detailing and craftsmanship. They often involve complex steel fabrications, frequently manufactured to Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) standards. Rod or cable elements may be incorporated into the truss design, and lateral tensile systems are often used to stabilize the facade structure. Simple truss elements can be located at every vertical joint in the glass grid, but are often interspersed with one or two cable trusses in a repeating pattern as a means to lighten the structural profile of the facade. Adjustable aluminium sub-construction with modular click
1. Maintenance Hard to maintain and clean
REASON OF CHOICE The biggest threat to have a library in front of a busy road is the noise, to choose a material that is able to reflect the sound is essential.

10 Hills Place / Amanda Levete Architects
Many narrow streets and alleyways off Oxford Street, London are currently misused and underdeveloped. These under regarded areas are ideal not only for improvement, but also for relatively unconventional design opportunities. Their proposal acknowledges this by providing an architectural intervention that subtly draws attention to the building through the intrigue of a sculptural faรงade. Inspired by the art work of Lucio Fontana large glazed areas orientated towards the sky are slashed into the faรงade, maximising the

SITE INSTALLATION & DETAILING
ADVANTAGES 1.Visibility and Light Transmission It consists of four glazed slashes in the aluminium surface orientated towards the sky, funnelling light down into the offices while creating a shading for the level below 2.Durability The glass blocks are scratch resistance and requires low maintenance 3.Low Maintenance required Self cleaning glass and hidden gutters within the eyelids ensure the facade remains low maintenance
MATERIAL USED
DISADVANTAGES 1.No Natural Ventilation The faรงade and sealed, glass blocks could not be open for natural ventilation. This might lead to sick building syndrome

TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM This sculptural form is achieved using a system of aluminium profiles used in the production of high quality, ship hulls. The facade is fabricated using curved 140mm wide aluminium profiles that are connected together on-site, using a tongue-and-groove system ensuring watertightness and construction efficiency. The metallic silver finish is a high performance durable paint typically used on super yachts. The use of self cleaning glass and an ingenious detail of hidden gutters within the eyelids ensures the facade remains low maintenance.
REASON OF CHOICE Despite of the sealed facade which allows o ventilation, it is not an issue as the library designed requires a confined space so that noise from outside could not enter in. Minimal maintenance is required . Sound from outside could be reflected as the material used is aluminum.
