It’s nice that you did an article on Montessori Education, last month. I’ve always felt very strongly about allowing children to learn at their own pace. As a child, I was mocked at for being a slow learner and it affected me right through adolescence and early adulthood. We need to spread awareness that no two fingers of a palm are alike.

CONFIDENTIAL Online! It’s surprising how social media has caught up in Bahrain especially with the youth; bloggers have become the next big thing; print media still has a strong presence but most publications prefer having websites too. In addition, new gadgets keep flooding the market so often which makes using online media so much more convenient. I’m really excited to know how this is going to evolve in Bahrain. Lara O’Neil

Ladies First

At the end of last year, Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King, and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), opened the Bahrain Women’s Competence Development Centre (Riyadat Mall), located in A’ali.

T

he aim behind it is to support women in the field of entrepreneurship and provide economic security for the Bahraini women through cooperation between the public and private sectors. The BD3 million-centre includes over 50 units related to clothes, accessories, gifts etc, as well as a number of service facilities such as restaurants, cafes, mobile companies and design companies. Although the centre is in its infancy and a number of units are waiting to be filled, it’s still worth popping in now, just because there’s some little gems tucked away.

BASTA 23

According to many of the health experts – we’re supposed to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a pauper. So what better place to feel like a king at Basta 23, located at Riyadat Mall, A’Ali. This eatery is so funky that it completely took me by surprise when I discovered it. It’s decorated incorporating the traditional Arabic theme with a modern arty twist. Arabic TV plays in the back ground just as it would in any true little Arabic coffee shop. BASTA 23 is the sort of place that you take visitors who want to visit the ‘old Bahrain’. It serves true traditional Bahraini food including the delicious breakfast of Balaleet, chickpeas, black beans with tomatoes egg, which is kind of like a cross between scrambled eggs and an omelette. It really is a great place to start your day. For home deliveries and more information Tel. +973 7757 5757.

The White Box

The White box is an interactive art installation and a charity project where making a mess is a must! One creative and imaginative photographer, Khaled Almoayed wanted to shed light on food being over consumed during Ramadan. What started out as a small initiative is now a growing collective. For this project, subjects were asked to bring leftovers to take part in a photo shoot. Images of the people were then captured with their dish being catapulted at them! It’s that simple!

22 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

art space

The project is set up as a three-step experience.

First,

The audience enter a secluded musical white box and watches the process through a stop-motion animation app.

Second,

They exit the box and are then faced with the best moments blown-up on canvases.

Third,

They learn about the project and its tie to charity. Khaled came up with one rule, to participate, one would have to donate! Participants must contribute a sum of their choice to make up for their dish, audience could also donate (if they wished to) at the exhibitions. At the Anamil Exhibition, working with AlReem Charity to handle food packages and donations, The White Box raised over BD1,000. It’s called The White Box because people expect something clean and minimalistic, only to reveal a dirty truth: All the food seen were actually scraps to be thrown away. Upon understanding this, each individual is given the opportunity to help provide for others who are more in need.

“We hope to grow this collection and have it exhibited all over the world.”

If you would like to create your own White Box experience or have the project at a gallery, email: info@thewhitebox.com or visit: www.the-white-box.com to learn more. Find this project on social media by searching for thewhiteboxbh.

The Talented Khaled Almoayed Realising your passion for photography:

Growing up, my grandfather used to bring me magazines and comics from Al Hilal Bookshop. I always admired the pictures of celebrities, movie posters and superheroes hoping that one day I could create something just as cool. In high school, I was known as the guy who documented everything but in university, my passion really developed. I joined the university photo society and started teaching myself with books until I felt ready to experiment in a studio. I organised a group to model and had experts teach me about the equipments while shooting. From then on, I’ve been continuously evolving. I’m not the most technical photographer, nor can I say that I know everything.

I’m a resourceful producer with an imagination; if you want it – I’ll find a way to produce it. Your inspiration:

Pop culture, film and television; also by technology and how our world is changing every day. Honestly, a lot of ideas can come to you when you least expect them. That’s why I keep an idea notebook with me and write (or sketch) the maddest things in it. Half of it will not see the light of day, but sometimes you may look at an idea differently and the execution becomes possible. I’m not on a mission to just do ‘crazy’ things; I’m just doing my best to express myself at that moment.

A day in the life of Khaled Almoayed:

Brace yourselves! (Don’t). Typically, my day starts with me hitting the snooze button a few times in the morning before I give in and start getting ready. I’m self-employed, so I usually start working on marketing, social media, or video/photo editing for different projects. In between tasks, you’d catch me watching cat videos and taking quizzes on BuzzFeed (as you do). I usually end my night with some shows. When it comes to TV/Pop Culture I like to stay very current as it influences my life a lot. Another thing, I think when people say “too much TV is bad for you”, I disagree because it’s provided me with a wealth of knowledge, which gives me a slight edge.

Your dream project:

I have a dream to have my own creative establishment where people would come to me for something a little out of the ordinary.

Invest In Friends - You’re Caught When Bought! David Hollywood wonders, “Isn’t it outrageous how many friends we have who think we are clever and interesting because we have so much money, and when we don’t have money how those same friends don’t think about us anymore?”

David Hollywood

Commercial enclaves forge their thoughts, When feelings my transactions bought, Directs the lust their greed has sought, In fear! In case my monies nought. These friends surround my needs when taught, My company has always brought, To them a profit formed and wrought, By me who feels their bonds support. Their loyal selfishness has fought, To purchase what my riches ought, From pacts that make my monies taut, And fear my exploits earn them naught. So when they find themselves distraught, It is because I made them fraught. With friendship that my treasures caught.

All That Glitters… Keep it plain, simple and minimalistic says Robert Tateossian, ace jewellery designer. Banker to jewellery designer! How did that happen?

I think it was a matter of circumstances. I was 27, didn’t have a family or mortgage and wanted a sense of adventure. As a banker, I was stuck in a rut and wanted a change. Also, I wanted to be in the world of fashion and an entrepreneur.

Did you always know you’d be a jewellery designer?

It was a nagging feeling at the back of my mind but I didn’t know. I was back from a trip to Asia and felt depressed to get back to work. When you’re forced to do something that you don’t like, every day you question yourself, why am I doing this? That’s when I decided to make the shift.

What are the trends this summer?

This summer, it’s bracelets! It’s all about experimenting with bright, fun colours like baby blues and flouro colours like bright blues and oranges.

A piece of jewellery close to your heart?

I would say it’s the watch cufflink we introduced about 20 years ago. This innovative piece placed us on the map.

What was the most exciting part about working on your latest collection? Every season, I make it a point to come up with something different. When I was in Tuscon, Arizona I came across a whole bunch of really unusual ammonites, fossils and trilobites. We have used it in one of our cufflink designs, set in silver. Sourcing these pieces and figuring out the logistics of wrapping silver or gold around them was thrilling because these pieces are fragile and not meant to be worn as cufflinks.

Your signature style? Quirky!

Being quirky VS minimalistic?

It’s very difficult to put one first. Many years ago I was participating in a trade show, at Paris. A buyer from an American department store came up to me and I asked her if she liked the collection. She said, “Ermm, sorry but your style is too simple and plain.” I replied, “But that’s my signature; you hit the nail on the head.”

Do you think it’s okay for women to follow a minimalistic style?

It depends on the fashion cycle you’re looking at. Right now, jewellery for women is completely over the top and it’s not my style! I do believe in fashion but won’t let it dictate me.

Do you believe this trend will change? Yes.

Robert Tateossian’s collection is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bahrain City Centre.

Two Brothers, One Dream Let’s mix art, fashion and creativity and combine them all in the form of furniture. Intrigued? Jenny Thomas interviews the creative duo and owners of the latest furniture design / lifestyle concept store in town, Innovation Themes.

52 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

people Tell me a bit about yourselves

Innovation Themes is a themed lifestyle store started by two brothers, Ahmed and Fahad Abdul Aziz Hussain. Ahmed A Aziz Hussain (AH): I come from quite an artistic background. I’m a musician and I hold a degree of Accounting and Finance. See how unrelated the two things are! I used to work as an auditor, but deep down, I knew I had a passion for art and lifestyle. I just needed the push. The artist in me decided to take the bold step when Fahad pitched the idea of “Innovation” to me. Fahad A Aziz Hussain (FH): I hold a degree of Political Science and Economics. Right after I graduated, I wanted to start something of my own. I didn’t want to waste any time working jobs that did not interest me as much. I have to admit; I took the risk and made the bold move of becoming an entrepreneur. I remember sitting with Ahmed and telling him, “We have studied so much. Why don’t we combine the knowledge we have and do something we love?” That is how Innovation was born in 2010.

Tell us about Innovation Themes

Innovation Themes is a sub-brand of Innovation. Located in Saar Mall, we cater to the elite crowd. We are extremely happy to have Creative Co-Op Home, one of the leading companies for furniture in the US and worldwide, as our new business partner! The people who visit us are impressed with the design of the store and what we offer. We have seven themes under one roof, hence the name ‘Innovation Themes’. We have The Seaside, The Kitchen, The Cottage, The Soho, The Bohemian, The Wine Bar and The Love and Heart. Each theme has its own character. Innovation Themes is raw and fresh. We have mixed the country style along with an industrial look. Every person in Innovation Themes is like a family. We help each other out and work well together. It’s the teamwork that we admire and are proud of.

people Fahad and Ahmed Abdul Aziz Hussain

“We love each piece in our store. But, we love them more if we see them all sold!” Your main objective

Our main objective is to improve the quality of living. We intend to improve a person’s home not only by bringing in good looking items, but by providing pieces that are creative and unique at a comfortable and affordable price.

What was your biggest challenge?

Starting a furniture store is not easy in Bahrain. There are a lot of companies who have already built the reputation. We were entering a market that we did not have experience in. But, that was our trigger to be one of the best. Being innovative and unique is necessary to survive. This is what we are proud of - We deliver according to our name “Innovation”.

What has been your inspiration for the different concepts?

We have been doing our research for the past five years. Themes is a result of our outlet, ‘Innovation’. We tested a lot of our ideas there. When we travel, we allow ourselves to be inspired by each country’s lifestyle and art. We meet a lot of people who have the passion for art along the

54 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

way both local and international. It’s also a proud addition to be able to portray Bahraini Art in a big way at our store.

What role does fun play in every process of work?

What we do on a day-to-day basis is fun. We do not want to be a normal store at a mall. To come up with ideas that the customers will love takes creativity. When creativity comes into play, it’s a fun filled day at work. We like waking up in the morning looking forward to work!

Describe your work in three words AH: Fun, creative and music FH: Business, fun and passion.

What trend do you think is picking up fast in the interior design industry? That will definitely be the use of recycled material. There is so much scrap around that can make gorgeous and stunning looking pieces. You know what they say, “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure”. Innovation Themes is located in Saar Mall.

The Makeover The story so far and the final episode.

Jennifer Heaton decided to ‘look after

herself a little more’ and that’s when she clicked the mouse to send us an email. Bahrain Confidential picked her as the makeover winner and got her connected with the best dermatologists, stylists and beauty experts on the island.

The Cosmetic Treatments with Dr Dean involved injecting fillers in the cheeks, under the eyes and under the mouth. Jennifer looked visibly younger and fresher after the session. The Botox helped reduce the lines on her giving her a younger look. For your own new look, call Dr Dean at the Royal Bahrain Hospital on Tel. +973 1724 6857.

Jennifer Heaton before the makeover

The Wardrobe Styling with Vusala Hinnant was fun and enlightening! Our team, led by in house stylist Vusala decided to storm Jennifer’s wardrobe and after a quick SWOT analysis we came up with three looks, glamourous for the evening or a special event; smart casual or occasional and casual daily. Jennifer learned how to mix and match her clothes, how to wisely choose prints according to her body type and how to play around with accessories. To get a lesson or two on how to dress up, email: Vusala Hinnant on vusala@style-vh.com Wardrobe Styling with Vusala Hinnant

Hair & Make-up at Felda Cut & Style

The Hair & Make-up session at Felda Cut & Style took two days. On Day 1, in house beautician Felda spruced up Jennifer’s locks with a smart hair cut and some colour and highlights. Day 2 was reserved for some dramatic makeup keeping in mind Jennifer’s skin tone and the looks for the final photoshoot.

“I would like to thank Bahrain Confidential for this amazing experience. It has been so interesting and I have walked away with so much information. Dr Dean was really patient and understanding; the transformation was immediate and people actually came up to me and told me I looked different and refreshed. Vusala shared great tips on what to wear; what colours and patterns work for me; and how to mix and match. Felda was amazing; I hardly recognised myself after the cut and colour. I am definitely inspired to keep my new look up and to follow through with all I have learned.” – Jennifer Heaton

“I shortlisted three looks for Jennifer, glamourous for the evening or a special event; smart casual or occasional and casual daily according to her body type and skin tone. The first look is a black evening gown which brings out Jennifer’s natural beauty. The second look has soft pastels which accentuate her fair skin tone. In the third look, the vertical striped blouse lengthens her body and is paired with black trousers.” – Vusala Hinnant “A bob-cut compliments the shape of Jennifer’s face. As for the colour I’ve changed it from copper brown to dark iridescent golden blonde, which is the base colour. I’ve added additional highlights enhancing the dark base colour and lowlights to achieve a reflection against the highlights. I stuck to a formal day-make-up for Jennifer as she is beautiful and already has a fair skin tone.” – Felda

Cancer: A Growing Concern In Bahrain

Dr Jalal Al Maskati, Consultant Internist and Cancer Specialist at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital talks about the disease, its causes, treatments and misconceptions surrounding it.

What are the common types of cancer in Bahrain?

Lung cancer is widespread among men and breast cancer among women.

toxins and carcinogens. Also, obesity is the main cause of colon and breast cancer in women. Genetic causes are also responsible; 10-15 per cent of women are predisposed genetically.

What are the major causes? The main causes of cancer in Bahrain are smoking and obesity. Not many know that even bladder cancer is caused by smoking. Viral infections usually cause cervical cancer and Hepatitis C. The HIV (AIDS) virus also lowers immunity making the body more vulnerable to tumors. Causes for other cancers differ; for instance smoking causes lung cancer as the lung tissues are agitated due to long exposure to

Are there new treatments available for cancer? Immunotherapy and targeted therapy as well as therapies that close the blood vessels feeding cancer cells are lately developed treatments. These

methods are different in that they target only the tumor location. Chemotherapy on the other hand effects the entire body and most significantly the tissue. The new techniques stop the tumor from growing and spreading, and finally kill the cancer cells.

Can benign tumours turn malignant?

This is a common question; yes, it’s possible. For instance, cervical cancer in women usually starts out as an infection due to certain viruses; thereafter in some cases benign tumors begin to appear which are followed by malignant tumors.

Does early detection help?

Truthfully, early detection does not prevent the appearance of tumors, but it does prevent the development and spreading of the disease. Hence, the earlier it is found the easier it is to treat. Malignant tumors are very difficult to remove once spread. Also, avoiding chemotherapy and hormonal therapy makes it easier as these methods are very difficult to undergo due to the side-effects.

Your message to our readers?

“Of course, reducing obesity and smoking will help the Bahraini society maintain its overall health and wellbeing.

Boxing: The New Cardio?

You can burn up to 1,000 calories with one boxing class! It also boosts your self confidence more than you can imagine. Anoeska Drent discovers more about the sport with Jassim Darwish, popular boxing coach in Bahrain.

Anoeska Drent

Jassim Darwish is a trainer at Reza’s Martial Art Center, Bahrain.

So you’ve been a boxer for … … for almost eight years now, that’s since 2006.

Why coaching? Why are you not a boxing professional?

I was underage at the time so my parents did not let me.

Where did your start your boxing career?

I started off in the Philippines and after that I trained for Qatar’s national boxing team.

Why did you come to Bahrain? Boxing is an amazing sport and I really hope to make it popular on the island. I want to share all the knowledge I have about boxing.

What drives you to boxing?

I like to fight! Boxing has been a passion

64 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

ever since I was a kid. I feel free when I am training and when I fight.

Floyd Mayweather; his accuration rate is 90 percent.

don’t use my hands, I just keep my hands up and move around. After that, I do 10-minutes of shadow boxing, using my hands as well. Then I hit the punching bag for 4 rounds of 3 minutes each followed by a 30-second break. You can do as many rounds as you like. Boxing is a total bodywork out because the power comes from your feet.

What warm-up tips do you follow before you start boxing?

How do you strengthen your core?

Who in your opinion is the best boxer in the world?

I start with rotating my neck and wrists, to prevent injuries. Then I do 3 minutes of rope jumping followed by 30 seconds rest; I do this 5 times (that’s 135 calories in just 10 minutes!). After that I use the step and switch my legs after 3 minutes followed by a 30-second break. Depending on how I feel on the day, I do 10-minutes of footwork.

What is footwork?

I pretend I am fighting with an opponent but I

I plank and do jumping jacks on the floor. Bodyweight exercises are also important.

Tell us more about your diet.

I make fresh food every day. I don`t eat white rice, but brown and buckwheat. I also eat a lot of fish. No dairy!

A Beautiful Smile Means A Beautiful You Dr Amina Mustafa, CEO of Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital let’s us in on an amazing little secret that can transform your entire appearance pain free: Lumineers.

EDITORIAL?

“Lumineers are designed to deliver a beautiful result with a simple and painless process”, explains Dr Amina. “They are digitally designed to be ultrathin (about as thin as a contact lens), so they can be applied seamlessly over your teeth to deliver a natural looking smile.” The Lumineers technique eliminates the need for shots or temporary acrylic placement. While you wait for your custom-made Lumineers, you are guaranteed to look and feel great. Here’s the icing on the cake; there is no need for dreaded drills or shots. It’s a simple twostep process.

“It normally takes two visits to your dentist to bring out your beautiful smile. After your initial consultation, your Certified Lumineers Dentist will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth, and send the mold to an authorised Lumineers laboratory in the United States. On your next visit, which is usually a couple of weeks later, your dentist will place your Lumineers. Before the Luminners are bonded in place, it is important to try them on to ensure it is a good fit. The teeth are moderately etched to prepare for placement and then bonded one by

one. Your dentist will need to check your bite to make sure your contacts are in balance to avoid chipping your Lumineers through the course of any daily function”. Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital has more than one Doctor certified in Lumineers to help you get the most beautiful smile with almost no hassle and absolutely no pain. Health Updates Top 5 Worst Celebrity Diets to Avoid The British Dietetic Association (BDA) revealed its annual list of Top Celebrity Diets to Avoid. For the previous three years, the Dukan Diet has come out as Number One. But this year, making a brand new entry to the top spot is the Breatharian Diet. With so many diet books, weight loss ‘experts’ and celebrity-endorsed fitness DVDs in the market, who’s cashing in on your dreams? Here are some of the worst celebrity-linked diets that the BDA had identified and spoken out against:

#2

Biotyping (New!)

Celebrity: Boy George What’s it all about? The BioSignature system relates to six different hormone types and fat accumulation in different body sites and aims for ‘site’-specific body fat reduction. By choosing only certain foods, thus cutting out others, adding a training programme and taking supplements, the promise is it will ‘spot reduce’ fat. BDA Verdict: BIO-NONSENSE! This diet relies too heavily on supplements and pseudo-science with only a selective grain of robust science. It does not even mention internal fatty tissue. Many people will lose weight on this type of approach only because it restricts certain foods, restricts calorie intake and it involves physical activity.

66 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

#1

Breatharian Diet Celebrity: Michelle Pfeiffer What’s it all about? Individuals who follow the Breatharian Diet believe that they do not need to eat food or drink any liquids because they can achieve sustenance from air and/or sunlight alone. BDA Verdict: You seriously cannot live on fresh air alone! We cannot stress enough that people should NOT even consider following this diet. It doesn’t matter what anybody tries to tell us, the basic fact is that we all need food and liquid in our diet to live. You can be sure of weight loss if anyone attempted to ‘exist’ on this diet, but this would also be accompanied by dehydration, malnutrition and risk of death!

Celebrity: Gwyneth Paltrow What’s it all about? Cutting off gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley rye, oats and various foods containing it, is considered a healthier option for all and can lead to weight loss. BDA Verdict: Whilst important for those with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, there is no credible published research showing that a gluten-free diet per se leads to weight loss in those without. Many foods that contain gluten like breaded products, pastries, cakes and biscuits, are high in calories. So by avoiding them, many lose weight. Many believe, wrongly, they can eat as much as they like of gluten-free substitutes like biscuits, sausages and beer. Remember: Gluten-free does not mean calorie free.

health

Celebrity: Top models and other celebrities What’s it all about? It’s when people eat very few calories during the day/week and ‘bank’ these ‘saved’ calories (kcals) in order to binge-drink alcohol over the weekend. BDA Verdict: Do not fall off the wagon! Following a Very Low Calorie (VLC) diet alone is madness in itself. You will not be getting the calories, vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to survive and function. Not only that, by the end of the week when you are also tired and weak, you then subject your body to an onslaught of alcohol intake after intake after intake. Alcohol has little nutrition other than calories. This is a worrying ‘diet’ that could end up causing immense damage to the body.

#5

Dukan Diet (number 1 in 2010, 2011 and 2012)

#4

Alcorexia / Drunkorexia Diet (Non-mover – #4 since last year)

Celebrity: Carole Middleton, and Jennifer Lopez What’s it all about? This is a complicated high protein, no/low carb, four-phase diet that promotes rapid weight loss. BDA Verdict: Dukan does so much better! The rigid Dukan Diet works by restricting food, so restricting calories. Initial weight loss will be fluid. Even the creator of the diet, Pierre Dukan, has warned of associated issues with the diet such as lack of energy, constipation, the need for a vitamin and mineral supplement and bad breath.

“The bottom line is, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Also, if you have to pay for a DVD or special book or things that will unlock the secrets of losing weight, this can also be a good indicator that the only pounds you will be losing will be moneyout of your wallet. The simple fact is, there is no ‘wonder diet’ just as there are no ‘super foods’. “Maybe it’s not as exciting but the truth is, if you do want to lose some weight do it by eating a healthy balanced diet, watch your portion sizes and be physically active. Think of it as a marathon approach to achieving your goals, as opposed to a sprint approach.”

Letter

From Bahrain John Ridley de clutters!

John R Ridley

“I suggested my son should tidy his bedroom; his response was inevitable - he had no where to put everything.”

W

ith hind-site I made an error of judgement, returning home from an assignment in Dubai, I suggested my son should tidy his bedroom; his response was inevitable - he had no where to put everything. He was right; there was an old games machine, school books and unidentified devices that may once have performed essential roles. The following day, new wardrobes were ordered and a man who knows one end of a screwdriver from the other had been lined up to help fit them. But before they arrived, we needed to de-clutter and dispose off the

68 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

many long forgotten things, kept in case any became useful at some future date. When the wardrobes arrived it was clear that they would only be moved again with some difficulty - we had to take the opportunity to decorate. Naturally, I also painted the carpet, which then had to be replaced. Finally, preparations completed, the wardrobes were fitted and everything surviving the de-cluttering was given a new home. At this point the magnitude of my initial error of judgement became clear; the rest of the house seemed to be in need of refreshing too. With the clock ticking until my return to Bahrain, paint, brushes and other decorating implements, took up temporary residence in a corner of the house. Window frames were steam cleaned removing the build-up of

salt from the storms that battered the town earlier in the year. Room by room, we de-cluttered and painted; every bag of surplus goods either sent to the dump or was destined to reappear in charity shop windows. With the hard work finished, the house is clear and freshly painted, and pictures and wall hangings have been swapped; we can enjoy the fruits of our collective achievement. Around the town, it seems everyone is taking advantage of the good weather and doing the same; the old fishermen’s cottages, making up most of the town, are all being painted in bright colours, and the fishing boats have been lifted from their moorings in the small 700-year old harbour for their annual coat of paint. Soon, the whole town will be readied for the tourist season - when visitors double the small population. The season begins with the annual fossil festival, a gathering of enthusiasts who scour the beaches for fossils from the Jurassic period; the land slides of winter should reveal plenty of new finds. After a couple of very busy weeks at home, we have a freshly decorated house, the clutter from the past year - the article within a magazine I promised to read one year ago, and the bargain I found in a shop - has gone. With a clear home and a clear mind, it’s time to return to work in Bahrain. OUR PERFECT GETAWAY

Hani Royal Spa

Melissa Nazareth rejuvenates the Royal way.

“The Fusion massage is a detoxifying massage, re-energising the body using a combination of classic Swedish circulatory strokes.”

S

ummer is here and what better time than now to pamper yourself with a relaxing spa treatment! Hani Royal Spa invited me to treat myself with their Hani Royal package. We took a quick tour around the spa and after a refreshing dose of warm ginger and clove tea, the treatment began. First, it was the Moroccan Bath which includes soothing sauna sessions spaced between vigorous body scrubs. The steam opens your pores while refreshing your body and the ginger and salt exfoliation leaves your skin glowing and replenished. Just before the

70 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

final shower a mint pack was applied, which is to soften your skin. After this we moved on to the Fusion massage which is a part of the package too. Just before the massage, my masseuse took me through a foot cleansing process. I was asked to dip my feet in a bowl of warm water with cleansing salts. The Fusion massage is a detoxifying massage, re-energising the body using a unique combination of classic Swedish circulatory strokes. It uses just the right amount of pressure and is more suited for relaxing. If you’re the type who likes your massages strong, the Deep Relief and Traditional Deep Flow massages (not part of the Hani Royal package) are great too. The back massage came first followed by the limbs and head while soothing music played, adding to the tranquil experience. Before I knew it, my spa treatment had ended and boy did I feel great!

Full manicure, pedicure and facial treatments are also available at Hani Royal Spa, which also has a gym offering members customised training. Their spa treatments are customised too; for instance, guests are free to reduce the time of a onehour massage and fit another treatment of their choice in that time frame. Another instance of Hani Royal’s impeccable service is recommending the right treatmentto their guests. Susie Uba, the spa manager told me how sometimes guests want a certain treatment that may not be good for them and that’s when they are advised a more suitable option. The duration of the Hani Royal package is 90 minutes and the price is BD50. Try this one and you won’t regret it! Hani Royal Spa is located in Seef district. Offering Compliments Across Cultures It’s a valuable art, says Katarzyna Richter, Cross Cultural Psychologist.

W

e all love compliments, don’t we? Though offering one can get tricky especially when you’re staying in a place like the Middle East, a melting pot of cultures. What works in one culture may not in another! In the Arab world compliments are a long observed tradition as well as a communication tool for everyday interaction. They are usually lenghty and poetic. For instance, “the world enlightens your face“ and “may Allah make all your days beautiful“. It’s also important to compliment often. In other cultures this may be regarded as dishonest or manipulative. But for people who were brought up expressing kindness frequently, the expression of warm words is a sign of the respect.

Another aspect is complimenting objects like clothes, accessories and home décor. In most Arab countries as well as Russia, Ghana, Greece, Turkey and Romania such a compliment may oblige the person to give the item to you. There is a Persian cultural practice, shekasteh-nafsi or modesty under which one is expected to downplay one’s own talents or achievements while praising similar traits in others. The person who is complimented must devalue the flattery and offer one back; or reassign the value of the praise back; or compliment a family member or God. Many Asian countries like China, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, India and Japan pay a compliment by describing the qualities. For instance, in Korea the compliments most frequently used are “chakhada” (good natured), “bujireundhada” (diligent) and “yeeuibareuda” (polite). Asian cultures also do not begin the compliment

Katarzyna Richter

with “I“. For instance, “I like your dress” or “I think your hair looks lovely”, since doing so focuses attention on the interlocutor. Performance or personality is praised more often than appearance. In Japan and Korea, compliments are readily deprecated. For instance, the most common Japanese response to a compliment would be “Le, Le” (no, no) or “Sonna koto nai” (That’s not true). This is because modesty and shyness are expected social norms. This is different from individualistic Western cultures like America and Europe where being genuine and honest is most valued, even if someone’s feelings can be hurt. In such settings, compliments are usually given before or just after criticism in an effort to balance the impact on the listener. Freely given compliments, without criticism can be immediately accepted without a compliment in return.

Reaction to the Same Compliment, Across 3 Cultures Mrs Lee: “Ah, your daughter so beautiful! Make you so proud!” Mrs Wang: “Oh no! Not really. She actually very ugly – just using some good make-up – ha! ha! You are the one proud – your daughter so clever! Top of the class!” Mrs. Lee: “Aya, no! Not at all! She quite stupid but she has good teacher.” ========================= Mrs Lee: “Ah, your daughter so beautiful! Make you proud!” Mrs Jackson: “Oh thanks – yeah, she’s pretty awesome, isn’t she? And she’s top of the class too! I’m so proud of my baby girl. She’s just the best daughter any mother can have. Well, see you next week …” (Walks away) Mrs Lee (to herself): “What a conceited, boastful woman with no social sensitivity!” ============================ Mrs Lee: “Ah, your daughter so beautiful! Make you so proud!” Mr Ahmed: “Yes, thanks to God. May she be blessed with good life, God willing and protected from evil eye.”

“My theme is open mindedness. My work portrays how people who claim that they are open-minded are not. For instance, in this painting, the lady’s glasses are fogged-up which is symbolic of her not being open-minded.”

Ibrahim, Grade 12 Student Artist

“My theme is the human mind. It revolves around psychology and thoughts of human beings.”

Alan Gray, Art Teacher

“It’s nice our students realise that their paintings are not locked away but benefit a bigger purpose, in this case charity; that their art is being appreciated outside of the classroom. We try to give our students exposure to multiple art media.”

Technology at F1 Underpinning the Bahrain Motorsports Marshall Club this racing season.

About Me Social Media Executive @ VIVA Bahrain Mohammed Zainal

F1 2013 at the Bahrain International Circuit

Bahrain’s biggest sporting event, the 2014 Formula One Race will take the Kingdom by storm this month. While all eyes will be on the track, the Bahrain Motorsports Marshall Club (MMC) will be the ‘unsung heroes’ of the grand prix weekend as they battle to ensure the race runs smoothly and efficiently. Race Control lies at the very heart of Formula One and the team are responsible for monitoring and supervising all stages of the racing sessions. Track Marshalls, stationed at key points around the track, are the ‘eyes and ears’ of Race Control out on the track while also communicating important safety messages to the drivers. The Track Marshalls are also responsible

get stay social informed

for providing Race Control with a detailed report of any incident within seconds of it happening so further investigation can be carried out, and drivers penalised as appropriate. The MMC wanted to find a way to better manage the transfer of information between Marshalls and Race Control, which is when a talented young Bahraini programmer created an application specifically for the job. The real-time app is the firstof-its-kind to be used by any Formula One circuit in the world and is a perfect example of how technology underpins an event of this calibre, helping it run more smoothly.

So, how does it work? 30

Marshalls from Bahrain will be using

this unique application at the Bahrain International Circuit on mini iPads powered by VIVA. This empowers them to keep everyone at race control updated, and problems can be dealt with there and then. The app was tested at last year’s event but will be fully implemented for the 2014 edition of the race. Last year’s test was so successful that the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – the governing of motorsport worldwide – has recommended the app is used for all races all round the world. share their views on safe driving.

Anita Das, Racing Enthusiast

Knowing all the laws, how many of us actually follow it? From my personal experience, I feel it would be better if those with new licenses take a tip or two from an experienced driver before they set out on their own. All said and done, driving is an enjoyable experience if it is viewed as a skill rather than just a means to commute.

Tamim Anwar, Professional Kart Racer

Driving is unavoidable and has become part of our daily lives. A few pointers to keep in mind: make sure your seat belt is fastened at all times; never drive when drowsy; don’t follow the car in front of you too closely and apply the 3-second rule; be aware of vehicles and people around you; use all mirrors possible; avoid blind spots especially around trucks; never drink and drive. If it takes you 20 minutes to get to your destination, give yourself 25 minutes and drive carefully. Enjoy driving!

Tutiana Jusat, Fast & Fabulous 2013 Winner

Bahrain has a well planned and organised road system with smooth traffic flows but road users are often impatient and ignore traffic rules. My daily drive to work is usually fun except for the tailgaters on the main highway. At times, traffic jams are created when drivers don’t observe traffic light signals and the yellow box junction rules. Apart from cyclists and pedestrians crossing highways, rain is also a safety hazard on the roads, so drivers must adapt their driving styles to weather conditions and be aware of the surrounding traffic. Avoid mobile phones while driving. I would leave the speeding at the race track and the racing in track competitions. April 2014 | Bahrain Confidential | 109

Taste Life! Animal fats are back says John Ridley.

John R Ridley

“Those who consume animal fats have far healthier hearts and a lower incidence of diabetes, osteoporosis, skin conditions, gallstones, and kidney problems than those who avoid saturated fats in their diet.

E

ach month, I discuss ideas for my Bahrain Confidential articles over a coffee with two friends; recently our conversation turned into one of the most fiercely fought debates in nutrition - the role of

animal fats in our diet. Across the world, we are suffering from obesity and diabetes epidemics, and are being encouraged to limit our consumption of animal fats to the smallest amounts; consuming them, we’ve been told, will increase cholesterol in the blood stream, and bring about our early demise. Animal fats, like olive oil, contain 50 per cent mono-unsaturated fat, and remain stable at high temperature; we have thrived upon them for thousands of years. In contrast, vegetable oils are damaged by chemical processing and are further harmed by the heat from cooking. Current advice is to avoid saturated fats;

112 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2014

consequently, availability of low fat products has increased to the point where it can be difficult to buy full fat produce. We use food to nourish our bodies; proteins to repair muscle, carbohydrates for energy, and fats to provide every cell in our body with structure, protect organs, and produce hormones. If our diet does not contain essential fats and other nutrients, or they have become damaged, these processes are disrupted. Studies increasingly show that those who consume animal fats have far healthier hearts and a lower incidence of diabetes, osteoporosis, skin conditions, gallstones, and kidney problems than those who avoid saturated fats in their diet. Following my discussion with friends, I was given the task of testing recipes for beef dripping; later in the week we spent a delightful afternoon tasting the prepared samples. Far removed from celebrity chefs and ornately fashioned bottles of olive oil, it may seem unthinkable that three men could

spend so long sampling and extolling the virtues of animal fat; but, the world over, they are and always have been a vital part of our diet and cuisine. British readers of my age will remember wintery Sunday evenings, toasting fresh bread on the embers of a coal fire, spreading the toast with fresh dripping left over from the Sunday roast; seasoned with salt and pepper, it was a perfect childhood Sunday tea. If, like so-many of us, you have become accustomed to cooking with oils instead of animal fats, I urge you to try; with a delightfully rich and powerful flavour, you will never exclude them from your cooking again. Should you wish to receive a copy of my recipe for beef dripping, send me an email at the address below. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, broadcaster, and writer, he is busy preparing his new web site www.taste-life.co.uk, and can be contacted at john@johnridley.nu

le chocolat

chef interview

After setting up 3 outlets in Bahrain, LE CHOCOLAT continues to make its way to the hearts (through the stomachs!) of gourmands. Corporate Executive Chef, Luke Bonnaz shares a byte. What is your favourite food memory?

The flavour and texture of freshly made vanilla ice cream at our pastry shop in France. My uncle introduced me to eating ice cream with fresh and crispy French baguette. I taught my daughter the same and she loves it!

What is your favourite dessert at Le Chocolat?

The Montana cake! The dark chocolate with the crunchiness of the nuts balances the sweetness really well.

What do you like to eat when you’re at home?

Anything simple, fresh and homemade. My small kitchen at home is quite well equipped and I spend a lot of time in it to come up with new creations.

What is the most challenging ingredient you’ve worked with?

I will say foie gras (duck/goose liver). It’s a tedious process to select fresh foie gras, clean it, soak it and then cook it. It can be easily over cooked so you need to be careful. Foie gras is a delicacy right from the Pharaoh’s era.

Your signature dish?

After almost 37 years in this business the list of signature dishes can be very long! Though if I had to pick one, it would be this fish delicacy influenced by French Polynesian flavours. It’s prepared using Salmon of God which is served with a vanilla Beurre Blanc sauce and tastes absolutely heavenly.

Your tips to aspirant chefs in Bahrain?

Whenever you cook, do so with love and passion; the results will always be amazing. Le Chocolat is located in Seef district, Enma Mall – Riffa and Diplomatic area

the k hotel

chef interview

Having successfully launched their new steak menu, THE K HOTEL is ready to usher in the summer with its team of enthusiastic chefs and their mouthwatering creations. Executive Chef, Sylvester Rosario gets candid. Your signature dish?

My key creation is honey glazed slow cooked beef ribs. I use a very special way of cooking; a combination of dry and moist heat methods and unique ingredients.

Your favourite dish at The K Hotel?

Of course the spare ribs served at the K lounge; this dish is really good value for money and will tickle your taste buds!

Your list of ingredients for the summer?

Summer food should be cooked with light ingredients, not too spicy and without nuts. I recommend any kind of seafood slightly sautĂŠed or grilled, served with fresh garden greens and accompanied by a vinaigrette.

As a child what did you hate eating?

Bitter Gourd! My parents always told me how healthy it is but it is too bitter.

Your dream restaurant?

A seafood restaurant with limited number of seats where the dishes will be prepared in an open kitchen; the guests will be able to directly interact with the chefs as they prepare food, discussing the cooking styles and ingredients used. Visit The K Hotel in Juffair.

Pick a citrus fruit or another one of your choice and put it on a chopping board with the top and bottom (the unsmooth ends) going horizontally (facing to the left and right as you look at it). Cut straight through with a knife, cutting closer to the middle for a larger wheel. Then make another incision to determine the thickness of the wheel. Finally, slice up one of the ‘spokes’ to the centre to create a space to hook the wheel over the glass.

Wedges

Cut the fruit lengthways from top to bottom into 2 halves. Take one of these halves and place the zest facing up. To put a wedge on the side of a glass you need to turn the wedge with the fruit part facing up and cut a slit in the middle allowing it to be pushed on to the glass.

Twists

To create a twist, you will need a zester/canale cutter or a vegetable peeler. Start just to the side of the

top of the fruit and once you have a good hold, gently pull the peeler and slowly turn the fruit.

Rimmed Glass

Fill a bowl or saucer with your desired garnish and then hold the glass upside down and dip the rim in. It will help dipping the rim in a bowl of water first so the garnish sticks to the rim.

Zest

Simply run the fruit up and down the grater, turning it once you have got all the zest from one area and working a different area.

Boats

Create an orange wheel and then skewer the fruit to hold it in place; probably with a cocktail stick or something a little fancier like a plastic sword or a swizzle stick. Then simply skewer through one side of the orange, then through the cherry and back through the orange on the other side, so that the orange wheel is wrapped around the cherry. Float it on top of the drink!

Things to know Taxis

Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware! Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
