Letter I was brunching outdoors over the weekend just before we went to press. Absolutely amazing weather!!! In wake of the pre-summer showers, Bahrain has officially welcomed the next season – cool breeze and mild sunshine – let’s hope it remains that way. Like the weather, we’ve turned over an autumn leaf too and bring you the best of what’s in store, this Spring-Summer. Our Fashion pages (pg 48 to 55) bring you the latest trends in clothes and accessories – floral prints and peppy colours are back to wow you! Sheer luxury for the month showcases (Pg 38) timeless timepieces. Go on, strap that watch on your wrist and welcome good times. The new season calls for a home makeover (pg 56). Why don’t you take a look at our favourite picks? There is something for every household. The much-awaited Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix is round the corner and we’ve listed the detailed calendar for the high-octane weekend (pg 16) – so

don’t forget to save the date! Bahrain’s buzzing with a host of other exciting events and we bring you an inclusive list in our Not to be Missed pages (Pg 10). While you’re at it, take a look at the most happening F1 parties (Pg 121) set to take the island by storm – international stars will grace the Kingdom at some of your favourite clubs and spaces. In other news, we’ve got on board yet another talented contributor, Craig Heslop, Founder of and Coach at Tribal Fitness. This month, he talks about the changing dynamics of manliness. Get your daily dose of tech updates – what’s new in the world of gadgets, gizmos and gaming on pg 86. Yours truly took the Porsche Macan for a spin – read the review on Pg 114. A very happy Easter to those who are celebrating! And even if you aren’t, there is a list of sumptuous brunches and dinners hosted at Bahrain’s best restaurants (Pg 118). Until we meet again, stay beautiful!

We are always trying to highlight Bahrain in every way. Our ‘Putting You In The Spotlight’ project hopes to offer locals and expats on the island a platform to express who they are. with Sean Paul Love for Dancehall music: In high school we used to drum on our desks and make riddims (read rhythms) and make up lyrics. I was also inspired by artists such as Stitchie and Shabba Ranks. Inspiration for new songs: Everywhere! Anything can inspire me, from seeing a beautiful woman to checking out a new dance move or even nature, like a captivating sunset. Creativity: Creativity is super important to me because it’s what makes me an artist. I write songs, I perform, that’s all creativity. When I dance it’s creativity. Everything I do is born out of creativity. My mother is an artist too, a visual artist. She is a painter and I respect that kind of art as well. Debut performance in Bahrain: I’m very excited! I love travelling to new places and spreading my music to countries I’ve never visited before. Looking forward to: I really want to try out the food in Bahrain, meet the people and of course perform for my Bahrain fans. Watch out for: I just did a song with J Balvin (from Colombia) and one with Farukko (from Puerto Rico) which is doing really good. I’m excited about a few other collaborations I’m currently working – you’ll have to watch out for those!

EMOTIONAL NUDITY When stripped of trust that was displaced, By those who’d earned our friendships grace, The sorrow that then feels betrayed, Serves as reward for all we trade.

David Hollywood

Share your feedback with David via email: thewineappreciationsociety@gmail.com or call, Tel. +973 3920 7624

This month, our poet David presents some lines upon the feelings and experience of being betrayed by those we trusted. 30

Fidelity embalmed, encased, Allegiance to a faith misplaced, Unveiled by what deceit unsealed.... ....of secrets that ideals concealed. Does honesty protect distrust, By saving us from zeal and thrust, And damage to our hearts, disguised, By guilt revealed now in your eyes. We tried to let ourselves appeal, To passions in convictions real,

Perceived by wisdom’s depths that feel, What subtle complications seal. But feelings dressed to greet the world Which stares cannot discover, Unwrapped our secret clothes, unfurled.... ....exposed by what they cover. Dis-appointment ends defeat, When all emotions stripped complete, And what should not be felt or viewed, Is now on show, exposed and nude. When raw is sore then scrutinize, The ones who say they’ll sympathise.

THE WORLD’S ICONIC HAIRSTYLES

BAHRAIN’S EXCLUSIVE STORY 32

art space Bahrain Confidential April 2015

Catwalking at 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and on the Hudson River, Jessica Minh Anh is certainly a significant part of the new wave of sensational!

Jessica Minh Anh produces the world’s most unconventional catwalks. The iconic model is known for showcasing some of the most unique runway hairstyles including the famous Burj Al Arab, Eiffel Tower, and One World Trade Center hair structures. This time, Jessica’s favourite New York hairstylist, Nunzio Saviano took on the challenge and amazed the world with these creations! She has also introduced a brand new fashion experience to the Big Apple by transforming the Hudson River’s giant glass boat into a 100-metre floating runway.

The J Spring Fashion Show 2015 presented a combination of haute couture, high end ready-towear, and luxury accessory collections from four continents. The exclusively selected designers embraced tradition, yet experimented innovative techniques of modern designs. What’s more? New York’s famous skyline and its architectural masterpieces such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and One World Trade Center, offered an iconic backdrop for the sensational catwalk.

J Spring Fashion Show 2015 marked Jessica Minh Anh’s ninth history making catwalk around the world, following her recent sky-high successes on the Eiffel Tower, One World Trade Center, and most impressively, the Grand Canyon Skywalk. The shows will every year continue to redefine modern standards and celebrate the rise of creativity.

Bahrain’s Art Attack By Nadine Compton

If you're reading this article because you thought the beloved 90s kid's show somehow had a reprisal in Bahrain, then you're sorely mistaken and I apologise for luring you in. If you're here because you read and enjoyed my previous article on the Bahrain National Museum, then great and thanks for being a faithful reader!

Nadine Compton

If you’ve had your fill of history and are hankering for some modern art in Kingdom, I suggest you check out Al Riwaq Art Space. The art space is a non-profit organisation that aims to develop the local art scene through exhibitions, residency and training programmes. It also focuses on cultivating connections, whether it's through community engagement or by allowing Bahraini and International artists to interact. Al Riwaq claims to be the first Bahraini institution to exhibit video art and conceptual photography, engage with emerging and established artists and designers in Bahrain, and use public spaces to address newer art forms and engage the general public. The art space organised the first public/street art project in Bahrain in 2009 and it entered into its first international collaboration a year later. The first time I went to the gallery, there was no one there so I couldn't really get a feel for how people use the art space. It’s website also needed to be updated, as I had no idea what the upcoming workshops were and what artists were being featured for that month. But since then, I have attended Market 338, an annual platform for designers and entrepreneurs, and have seen how they brought people together to create a real community atmosphere. The art space most recently featured Shamal, an art and digital film performance by the visual artist Rachel Gadsden and filmmaker Abigail Norris and Forms in Suspension by artist Lobna Al Ameen. Even though Al Riwaq has since updated its website, it doesn’t tell you which countries these artists are from. While I can make an educated guess that both Gadsden and Norris are from the UK and that Al Ameen is from this region, providing this kind of information would have been keeping line with their mission to support both international and local artists. But maybe I’m just being nitpicky. You can find Al Riwaq Art Space on 3 Osama bin Said Avenue in Adliya. They are open from 10:00 in the morning until 10:00 in the evening. While you won’t be able to easily find a parking space if you go on the weekends, the walk from wherever you park your car to Al Riwaq is pleasant enough, as the street it’s on is pedestrian only. You can also find a gift shop and café inside, with seating available upstairs and outside. If you’re hungry for more filling food, Al Riwaq is in a great location. It’s surrounded by many different kinds of restaurants. There really is nothing like this art space in the country, so it would be a miss if you didn’t go!

OMEGA ENCHANTS For The Men: OMEGA SEAMASTER AQUA TERRA 150M A new introduction to the OMEGA Seamaster family is the limited edition model purely inspired by James Bond, OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M. The colour of the dial matches that of the watch James Bond wore in his last film, Skyfall. The other striking element of this limited timepiece is the oscillating weight of the movement visible through the sapphire crystal case back. This has been cut and shaped to resemble a gun barrel, a design that is associated with James Bond’s adventurous spirit. The limited edition number is engraved on the case back and is powered by the new OMEGA Master Co-Axial calibre 8507. This model is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,007 gauss – associating it with Bond's famous "license to kill" number. The OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M is produced in an edition limited to 15,007 pieces.

For The Ladies: OMEGA CONSTELLATION PLUMA Admired for the longest time ever for their elegant design is the ‘Constellation family’. The newly introduced to the OMEGA collection is the Constellation Pluma. One of the most striking design elements of the Pluma is the mother-of-pearl dial that is available in natural white or blue. A soft, wavy pattern from the iconic claws on the bezel is engraved on the dial and recalls the gentle lines of a feather. Complementing the alluring dial are eleven diamond indexes set in 18K gold holders. The luxurious timepiece is complete with central hour, minute and seconds hands, which are crafted from 18K gold and coated with Super-LumiNova. Available at Omega Boutiques

MILVIN GEORGE

OFFICINE PANERAI’S REGIONAL MANAGING DIRECTOR

Tell us about your journey with Panerai.

Panerai has been my home since 2007. It truly is an honour working for Officine Panerai, a unique brand of watches. Panerai is a brand of high quality timepieces. Through every piece of ours, one can see our roots and our true identity.

Describe to us Panerai’s brand legacy and its strong presence in the Middle East. Panerai is a pure Italian brand with Swiss technology, founded by the Panerai family in Florence back in 1860. The founder of Panerai, Giovanni Panerai owned a small watch repair workshop in Florence. During those years, Panerai collaborated with the Italian navy to provide for them professional instruments like wrist compasses, torpedo watches and many under water instruments. In 1936, the Italian navy requested for a watch and that’s when the prototype of Radiomir was made. The first Radiomir watch was produced

42

for the navy back in 1938. It was a 47mm luminous dial, which was easy to read underwater and in the dark. It was hand wound and supplied by Rolex. During this period of time, our watches were being sold exclusively to the navy and were limited to as few as 300 watches. Over the years, Panerai have begun projects in the Middle East, India and Turkey. The first store in the Middle East was opened in Dubai in 2008, followed by stores in Doha, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Mumbai and Bahrain.

As you sometimes have limited edition especially for the Gulf. What are some of the prominent editions made especially for Bahrain? Yes, Panerai did make a special edition for Bahrain. It was engraved with the World Trade Centre Towers. It was our way of showing appreciation and it is a one

shot of limited number of pieces with Luminor- 50 pieces and Radiomir-10 pieces.

Tell us about your latest projectthe boutique in MODA Mall. What are your expectations? The new Panerai boutique, in partnership with Asia Jewellers, opened its doors in MODA Mall. The boutique is designed with a sophisticated rich interior that includes beautiful Venetian walls, Italian furniture and a gold Calacatta marble stone floor. The décor features a back-lit watch mechanism, the only other one is in Dubai. Everything about the boutique has been inspired from the sea. The interior shows the customer the link between Panerai and the sea through the use of teak wood, brushed steel, portholeshaped windows, and wavy walls, all of which recall the shape of elegant yachts. By opening the new boutique, we hope to strengthen our bonds with the potential and existing customers in the Kingdom.

Faye Weaver In The Spotlight Supporting the ‘Generation Of Tomorrow’, we proudly present to you, Faye Weaver. Myself:

I am in my 1st year of GCSEs, Year 10, at St Christopher's Senior School. Choosing what I love to do was very important to me, which is why I chose drama and art for my GCSEs. Being passionate about art in its various forms has helped me understand that my future career must involve creativity. When I graduate senior school, I hope to be in Parson's College in New York. It is one of the best and famous design schools in the world! I like fashion a lot and enjoy designing and sketching during my free time. And also, listening to music. It plays a huge part in my life. I listen to music all the time, play the guitar and enjoy singing.

Modeling:

I am very keen on pursuing modeling as a possible career or something on the side. It’s a great way to travel, see the world and experience the modeling life. I have in the past done shoots for Batelco, Viva as well as other clients. Being in front of the camera is something that I have always enjoyed, since I was a little girl. I am interested in photography and fashion, which adds to why I enjoy it so much.

Real Life Mentor:

I wouldn't say that I really have a mentor, but I think that my dad's photography has influenced my passion for modeling. The access to a studio and the availability of clients (through my dad) has helped me grow closer to my passion.

What Inspires Me:

I see inspiration in all of the things I love. There are many fashion designers and illustrators that I look up to like Coco Chanel and Hayden Williams in fashion, Franz Ferdinand in music. Models such as Kate Moss, Gemma Ward and even Twiggy are also a few of my biggest inspirations.

If I Could Be Like Someone, I Would Be Like:

Alexa Chung. Her modeling career is a great inspiration to me. She has also recently published a book, "It", and is a co-editor at British Vogue.

beauty Bahrain Confidential April 2015

Good-bye Ombré! Get familiar with these latest, low-maintenance styles before your date with your stylist.

Balayage

Balayage, taken from the French word meaning ‘to sweep’, is a freehand technique in which swatches of hair are sectioned and hand painted against a backing board with a lightening agent. After painting, each swatch is covered in cellophane. As balayage highlights are less systematically placed, you end up with fatter, less symmetrical, more random highlights, resulting in a more casual, beachy finish. It’s a great option for those who like the look of chunkier highlights with more contrast and less blonde.

Sombré

While ombré featured quite a stark dark-to-light fade, sombré – subtle ombré – is a much more nuanced take on the dip-dye trend. The lighter sections start up a bit higher and the lower lengths have ribbons of dark colour for a more gradual transition. If you are looking for a bolder look you should definitely go for this dark blonde combined with a lighter blonde deal. It’s just the perfect way to update those golden tresses.

Splashlights

Kim Kardashian flaunts her caramel balayage tresses

Add some sunshine to your hair with splashlights which are basically sharp flashes of laser-like blonde on dark tresses. This new style of highlighting looks like the sun has left a sheen on your hair and hey, horizontal highlighting can never go wrong on long hair.

Babylights

If you’re looking to go slow on the hightlights, this one’s for you. Babylights separates your hair into itsy-bitsy sections where each group of strands is then coloured. Though time-consuming, you’re left with a more multidimensional, radiant, natural-looking dye job. Unfortunately, the technique only really works on blondes.

“While ombré featured quite a stark dark-to-light fade, sombré – subtle ombré – is a much more nuanced take on the dip-dye trend.” Have you tried Lakme’s Chroma?

Lakme inspired hair care is what most hair-stylists are swearing by, this season. If you’re looking for long-lasting, ammoniafree hair colour, then this is your unique formula. Chroma is not only chemical (PPD) and fragrance-free but also boosts colour by 13 per cent and is twice as resistant to washing. It’s a great product for sensitive scalps and offers deep conditioning to the roots. Chroma’s wide colour palette promises something for all hair types and skin tones. Now, flaunting voluminous, healthy, and good-looking hair is so easy!

Art Of Makeup City Centre Bahrain is out to save all the to-be’s. You don’t have to go all crazy trying to plan your wedding. One of the workshops that they conducted was the beauty and makeup workshop. After all, us ladies want to look nothing but perfect on our wedding day. Professional makeup artist, Mai Al Moayyed was our saving grace. She conducted exclusive workshops over three days for all the ladies preparing for a special occasion (by special, we mean weddings *wink*) or who wanted to look fancy this season. A variety of exclusive workshops was conducted over three days at the Westin Hotel, City Centre Bahrain. The final extensive workshop covered A-Z professional techniques that featured products from favourite brands like Make Up For Ever and Lancome. Over 180 women had the opportunity to attend these exclusive workshops. Now, we know how fortunate we are to have attended the workshop. Mai Al Moayyed is a renowned makeup guru on the island. While we cannot mention too much that happened at the workshop, we can however give you a tiny (yet so, so important) routine that she walked us through.

MAKEUP ROUTINE 1. Cleanse/Remove makeup 2. Moisturise/Prime 3. Correctors 4. Foundation 5. Concealer 6. Powder (loose/ compact)

So, here you go, A-Z – The Professional Technique, courtesy THE MAKEUP MAUAL.

7. Contour and highlight (matte) 8. Blush 9. Highlight shimmer 10. Eyebrows 11. Eyes 12. Lips 13. Fixant Spray

When it comes to make up, it’s all in the details, the little things. Here are a few tips that Mai had shared with us.

Beauty Blender

The ‘Nude’ Eyeliner

The CHANEL Le Crayon Kohl ‘Clair’ is synonymous to magic when it comes to the eyes. This pencil has the ability to brighten the eyes, remove any redness and widen the eyes naturally of course. Available at Sephora or Saks Fifth Avenue

66

Contouring

It may sound intimidating, but contouring is now becoming every girl’s daily routine. The main purpose of contouring is to give shape to the area of the face and enhance the face structure through makeup. Mai recommends Bobbi Brown’s stick foundation. All the dark and light shades work perfectly together to give yourself the perfect artistic illusion. Available at Bobbi Brown in City Centre Bahrain

It’s never too late to invest in a beauty blender. This totally changes the way you apply makeup. The beauty blender ensures impeccable and streak-free application of makeup with minimum waste. When the blender is wet, it doubles in size and becomes even softer, allowing you to use less of the product every time.

Available at Sephora

The No Smear - No Smudge Makeup - Jenny Thomas

Bahrain Confidential’s Exclusive Beauty Story Don’t you love the confidence when you have all your makeup just the way you want, and not to forget, you are looking gorgeous! I wish everyday could be like that. If there were a way to have all the makeup on, without wasting my time and effort, I’d be all in. (A solution that doesn’t involve fake products or needles please). That is when the lovely owner of Bliss Spa, Muna Akhtarzadeh introduced me to the well-known permanent makeup and tattoo artist, Abeer Hourani.

S

o, permanent makeup and tattoo is something you need to think about before you get into it. You need to do your research on who is reputable and who is good. We have seen many permanent makeups go horribly wrong. Which is why, this article is one to be taken seriously, if you are opting for permanent make up.

Abeer Hourani

Her treatment involves, a detailed discussion of what will happen. The colour and the shape of the new eyebrows and lips contour will be carefully selected during consultation. It is best that is it’s your first time, opt for a light and natural micro- pigmentation, which you can later intensify after 30 days if you wish to be daring. Any colour selected can be changed at any point of time.

Bliss Spa, the cozy spa in Adliya, which specialises in state-of-the-art treatments for face and body introduced me to Middle East’s most well-known and dependable makeup artist, Abeer Hourani.

Depending on your lifestyle, the colour will remain for at least 12-24 months after which it will begin to fade naturally.

Chatting with her has helped me understand the concept as a whole and cleared all the doubts that were running through my mind.

So, if this is something that has been on your mind, head down to Bliss Spa and let Muna and Abeer introduce you to the world of permanent makeup.

Micro pigmentation, or more commonly known as permanent cosmetics is technically the process of inserting coloured pigments right underneath the skin’s surface. Contrary to what some may think, the process of micro pigmentation does drastically change the look of a person. It focuses on balancing any unevenness of a face. We all have issues with our face, (some of us may not say it out loud, but yes, we do). Our problems can vary from uneven eyebrows, unequally sized lips or even lips with a frayed contour. This is where micro pigmentation comes in. This process is guaranteed to offer the most natural solution with stunning results. I saw live examples and I was super impressed. Suffice to say, that it is still your choice what kind of makeup you want to put for the day, this system simply builds the foundation for looking perfect and not, well fake! Oh wait, did we tell you that this is PAIN-FREE! Abeer has been in the field of long lasting make up for so long and we would vouch for her any day. She has taken the time and effort to analyse and construct new mechanisms and techniques. All the products and colours used by her are organic, that means no allergies ladies!

68

Let’s take this fact in, shall we. Abeer Hourani is ‘The Only Make Up Artist in the whole of the Middle East who does tattoo correction”. Yes, you don’t have to cry over eyebrows gone wrong anymore. There’s hope!

Abeer Hourani’s services are exclusively available at Bliss Spa. Book an appointment with Bliss Spa on Tel. +973 1774 2222 @blissspabh

Steps to Improve the Condition of Your Hair Simple changes to how you treat your hair can create dramatic results.

Are YOU washing your hair wrong?

It’s easy to assume that by washing our hair every day, that we are actually going to improve the condition – WRONG! Especially, as the water in Bahrain is desalinated, this can be very de-hydrating for our hair and skin.

over it. Although they cannot hide thinning hair at the top of the scalp, Effortless Hair Extensions instantly gives your hair length and volume. Suitable for hair lengths that are just above the shoulder or longer. Available in 2 lengths 16 inch and 24 inch and made

from the most advanced synthetic hair technology – FEELsoREAL. It can be washed, hot ironed, curled and blow dried and is available 21 colours, 3 European styles and 5 Asian/ Afro styles and causes NO DAMAGE to your own hair!

There is, in fact, a wrong way to wash your hair, and getting it wrong can take your hair from silky and shiny to totally lackluster and damaged. Follow these simple steps to get great hair. • Never wash your hair in hot water – washing your hair in tepid water is better for the follicles. • When shampooing, work your shampoo into the top section of your hair only and then rinse it out. It automatically cleanses the ends and stops damage occurring in the length. • Scrubbing hard when washing your hair could put too much pressure on your scalp resulting in greasier hair, as it will encourage oil secretion from the sebaceous glands. • It's imperative to rinse your hair for twice the amount of time as lathering on product. • Use a clarifying shampoo, once a week to remove impurities and product build-up. • It's also important to avoid combing your hair after you've showered and instead take a wide-toothed comb through hair whilst you’re waiting for your conditioner to work its magic in the shower. • When drying, avoid rubbing with towels, this creates friction and can damage the cuticle leaving hair dull and lifeless, blot dry instead, to prevent damage. • It's essential to work scalp care treatments into your regime. This helps to support healthy hair-growth. If you’re tired of waiting for your hair to grow or want thicker hair now, there is an instant solution – Effortless Hair Extensions. Effortless Hair Extensions requires no glue, clips or tape etc. which can damage your own hair. It’s a thick weft of hair which is attached to your scalp by a very fine piece of wire which you do not feel. It slips onto your head like a hairband. Then you simply blend some of your own hair

Letter From Bahrain

John Ridley talks about restoring the balance in our lives.

L

ast month, Patrick (my son) and I met in a coffee shop, decorated in the style of an old rustic barn - in the arrivals hall of the newly rebuilt Terminal 2 at Heathrow airport - he’s taking a short break from diving in the Caribbean. It’s always a pleasure spending time together as a family, something that happens all too infrequently as the three of us spend much of our time on different continents. Patrick and I spent a few days on our own, looking after Poppy, our ageing dog, who despite her years, still demands two walks every day in the fields and woods she so loves. This past week, my wife, who jointly runs a small charity, has been attending a series of meetings with her fellow trustees. They could have chosen to meet in a faceless office anywhere in the country, but opted to rent a cottage in a tranquil location, far from the disturbances and distractions of modern life. Their meetings were interspersed with walks in the surrounding fields, and the occasional half an hour in an arm chair by the fire. There is, of course, a connection between the cottage and the coffee shop; many of us feel our lives

72

“But have these technologies really given us more time to enjoy life, or have we used this time to become even more busy, stressed and rushing towards the next task.” are overly hectic and out of kilter, we seek ways to restore the balance. We’ve become used to labour saving devices in the home; few would give up their vacuum cleaner, microwave oven, or car, but have these technologies really given us more time to enjoy life, or have we used this time to become even more busy, stressed

John R Ridley

and rushing towards the next task - thinking “Stop the world, I want to get off”? In times past, our lives were connected, now all too often, we fail to make and maintain meaningful connections within our life - taking the time to linger over food, or enjoy time with friends and family. Our fast paced life has weakened our sense of belonging; advances in technology mean that for most of us, our work and lifestyles are different from the past - modern life frequently leaves us isolated, yearning for connections to family, community, friends, food, and our homes - connections to a meaningful life. We rush our food, our family time, and even our holidays and recreation - both the coffee shop and the cottage provided an opportunity to escape the bustle of the world around us, and to reconnect, albeit, briefly. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster; he can be contacted at john@johnridley.media

Should I Or Should I Not Rest? Ever felt guilty skipping your workout? Have people told you that if you skip workouts, everything would have been for nothing? Don’t fear. Everyone has skipped a workout at some point of time. It’s important to cut yourself some slack and rest a day or two. But if your rest exceeds more than three days, then sir, we have a problem. After a while, you will be sitting on your recliner holding that bag of chips and thinking, ‘the gym feels like a distant memory’. So the big question is: ‘How long does it take to lose my fitness?’ 74

health updates Bahrain Confidential April 2015

even after a month of inactivity. But here’s the tricky part: While general strength doesn’t change much during that time, sport-specific muscle fibers will begin to change in as little as two weeks without a workout. It’s simple. The body likes to hold onto strength for as long as it can, but skills that are very specific to certain sports will decline faster.

A study showed that six months after quitting a 4-month strength-training programme, up to 50 per cent of the original strength gain was maintained. It’s also worth noting that among newbies, eccentric strength (strength used when lengthening a muscle or lowering a weight) may be harder to lose than concentric strength (which is when the muscle is contracted).

Cardio Loss

If You Exercise Regularly It’s way easier to bounce back from rest time if you exercise five or six times a week, or if you’ve been exercising for a while.

Strength Loss

For most, strength loss occurs after about two and a half to three weeks of inactivity. But again, it depends on why you took the long break. If you are sick, your body is overstressed, then you will start to lose strength after two to three weeks. If you’re not sick, and are able to get in some movement and light exercise, you can probably take three, four, even five weeks off without significant strength loss. Even science agrees. For runners and athletes, muscular strength fibers do not appear to change,

So what about the cardio lovers who are more concerned with the strength of their heart and lungs? Sadly, we lose this kind of conditioning a little more quickly than we lose strength. But don’t lose hope. While your cardio conditioning falls faster than your strength, it is easier to regain. So get back on that horse, you stud!

If You Have Just Gotten Into An Exercise Regime Glad you started. Exercise is important, regardless of how healthy you live your life. If you’ve hit pause on your trips to the gym, please don’t take too long to hit play again. Consistency is key for building new habits. If your body hasn’t been enjoying exercise for long, it can be easier to lose the progress that you have already made.

Strength Loss

As far as strength goes, it’s best not to be too concerned about losing your headway. Those famous “newbie gains” make it sort of easier to retain strength.

Cardio Loss

Cardio is a little more sensitive to time off. It will probably take four weeks of inactivity to lose two months of cardio.

Other Factors

While your fitness level is key to how quickly you get back to your fitness baseline, there are a few other variables that also play a huge role. 1. Age plays a role in your bounce-back time. Older people (60 and older) lose strength almost twice as fast as the younger trainees (20 to 30 years) in a six-month training course. 2. The reason for the break is also a factor. Illness, stress or trauma has caused a 28 per cent decrease in strength in less than a month. That is higher than the average rate of loss of strength.

Manliness. A Lost Art By Craig Heslop

Craig Heslop

78

Manliness in today’s world is almost taboo to talk about. ‘Manning-up’ can be seen as a sexist or chauvinistic statement. I coach almost a hundred boys per week, so I’ve learnt a thing or two from them. If you have a son or are interested in the changing dynamics of manliness, please continue reading. Before I start (and probably upset some mothers), I will state that it is very challenging for boys today to know their role in society and what expectations they should place on themselves.

contributor Bahrain Confidential April 2015

T

he modern-day boy will experience something very different to the world his grandfather lived in. Should a boy hold a door open for a girl? Should he punch the bully back or tell the teacher? Is it okay to wear pink? Grandpa would have taken pride in holding the door for a young lady and he certainly would have decked the local bully. He most definitely would not have been seen dead in pink! Things aren’t so black and white today and that is causing some confusion amongst boys. There are a few components that have contributed to these changes, which include: the media, technology and modern-day fathers. Despite the fact that serious crime, murder and war continue to diminish year-on-year across the globe (a true fact), there is a perception that things are getting much worse. Just reading a newspaper or clicking on CNN can make one fall into a state of depression. It’s a wonder that boys are kept on a short leash today. There are limited opportunities to be a boy. I was lucky enough to grow up beside a huge park and a nature sanctuary. For a few years now, I have been running desert survival programmes for juniors. Even the most timid, Xbox-loving, iPhone-hugging lad eventually falls in love with getting dirty, climbing trees and making fires. It’s in our DNA. The truth is that twisted news stories create false fear. This rubbish is sold to us when we hit the radio or look at Facebook. It keeps our boys behind bars and on PlayStation. They will be safe here. Talking about Playstation, technology is another red flag we all know about but do little about. Playing a few video games doesn’t hurt anyone but the issue arises when the boy spends every spare, waking hour playing ‘Call of Duty’ and in doing so, erodes his long-range vision, loses the ability to communicate with a fellow human and suffers the death of his gluteal muscles. Son, you’ve been well behaved for the last ten years whilst on the computer, but you are now testosterone-free, physically weak and have less vitamin D than a vampire. Our final target on the hit-list is the modern-day father. Being a rookie dad, I am no expert on the subject. I appreciate the difficulty in managing a career and family. It has taken me two years to acknowledge that my habits must change, and to ride two horses at once. Coaching kids for almost 10 years has given some insight into their changing world. Here are five big issues that I see with boys today:

1. Most are socially incompetent. They do not say ‘hello’ to adults or look them in the eye. Their handshake is limp. 2. The enthusiasm has gone. The banter has been replaced with a mobile. 3. They squat like old western men. This is the result of glued hips from excessive sitting. 4. One in ten kids can climb a rope. 5. Milkybar kids are us. An indoor existence and fear of the sun has left many kids looking albino. Now mothers, I am not saying that every kid is like this. It is a trend that is affecting the majority. Dads, here are four points you can do to reverse the adjacent point above: 1. Show a boy some good old-fashioned manners. Lead by example. 2. Don’t take life so seriously and for crying out loud, put your phone away when you’re around your son. 3. Improve your own health and fitness. You kid thinks you are the norm. 4. Go outdoors and play with them. Invest as much time as you can with your son. Manliness is very difficult to define. It’s meaning is different to each individual. To me, it means that I acknowledge I am a man. I have several responsibilities, which I should meet. To become a man, a boy needs a range of mentors who lead by example. Ideally, one of these should be his dad but that isn’t always possible. A boy also needs time to be a boy, i.e. a childhood. This includes trying new hobbies, frequent immersion in nature and plenty of active pursuits. Please note that none of these include a father’s financial wealth or social power. In my experience, there is a diminishing return when it comes to a family’s income; quite often, the worst childhoods are amongst the richest and most powerful fathers. In a nutshell, for parents, it’s about living the life now that you hope your son will follow with his future family.

HE Vichai Varasirikul, Thai Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and Nizar El Lakkis, Operations Manager at Mรถvenpick Hotel Bahrain

Songkran in Bahrain Mรถvenpick Hotel Bahrain, in cooperation with the Royal Thai Embassy and Oman Air are hosting the Thai Festival, this month, to mark Songkran, the Thai New Year. HE Vichai Varasirikul, Thai Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and Nizar El Lakkis, Operations Manager at Mรถvenpick Hotel Bahrain talk about the highlights of this much awaited event, and future plans. 80

interview Bahrain Confidential April 2015

Songkran Attractions & Thai Festival Line-up HE Vichai Varasirikul (VV): Having fun is a big part of Thai culture, even if it’s in the scorching heat! Songkran which comes during the hottest month of the year in Thailand, April, sees the entire country go bananas in friendly water-fights and street-parties that last for nearly a week. We try to create the same atmosphere when we organise the Thai Festival with Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain. We’re bringing chefs from Mövenpick Phuket to showcase authentic Thai culinary extravaganza – themed lunches and dinners – during the festival. Guests can also enjoy traditional and contemporary Thai performances. Art and craft enthusiasts can try their hands at umbrella painting and fruit carving workshops. Nizar El Lakkis (NL): My favourite part about the Thai Festival is its positive, contagious atmosphere throughout. The four-day festival, which is from 22nd to 25th April is going to be highly interactive with authentic Thai dishes prepped by specialised chefs flying in from our sister hotels in Thailand, and of course the umbrella painter who will add a very unique touch.

In Store for 2015

Hopes for the Thai Festival

(VV): We're working on some new ideas; last month, we invited Bahraini businessmen in the jewellery sector to attend Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fairs in Thailand. Both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding for future cooperation, joint investment and knowledge sharing in the gem and jewellery sector. Of course, this month we have the Thai Festival at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain to showcase our finest cuisine and culture. We will also participate in the Food and Hospitality Expo, and Health and Wellness Expo. Additionally, we're working on a “Thai Village” project which will hopefully take place later this year or early next year. (NL): We’re hoping for a great year ahead and the Thai Festival is a fantastic start. So far, 2015 has been good: we've pulled off many successful themed events such as the Italian Brunch and Belgium Mussel Madness, and flown in chefs for these occasions. We're already preparing for the second American Festival and I am positive it will be another successful event to add to the list.

(VV): It’s a great opportunity for the Royal Thai Embassy to partner with Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, once again, for the Thai Festival. We hope to bring the best of Thailand for everyone in Bahrain to experience and enjoy. (NL): A lot of planning went into bringing this festival to life. Thankfully, we have fantastic partners, the Thai Ambassador and Oman Air. Our team is set to create a memorable festival. We are also cooperating with Mövenpick Hotel & Resorts to fly in chefs from Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket. This is extraordinary and provides an authentic flavour to the Thai Festival. We’re organising umbrella painting and fruit carving classes and workshops for our guests, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy. It’s a really wonderful experience that should not be missed and I’m sure will enhance the energy of the festival apart from being a great souvenir. We hope to host our guests well which will be truly rewarding. For more info on the Thai Festival at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, call Tel. +973 1746 0017, and visit our Gastro pages and events calendar.

This year is an upgrade to previous years - we're creating a complete Thai experience which will truly bring the festival to life. From elaborately designed cooking stations to seven eloquent dancers, guests will not only enjoy a delicious feast in the lush garden but will experience the spirit of Thailand in Bahrain.

Hightlights of 2014 (VV): Thanks to Thailand and Bahrain’s friendly and cordial relations, bilateral trade has more than doubled in the past two years. The highlight of last year is Jewellery Arabia; we had a Thai pavilion at the exhibition for the first time and over 30 Thai companies participated. We also brought six Thai supermodels to put up a special fashion show on the opening night. In hindsight, that might have not been the best idea because when I spoke to the audience afterwards, everyone could only remember the models and not the jewellery pieces they were wearing (smiles)! (NL): We inaugurated Rimal Spa, one of Bahrain’s most premium spas at our hotel, last year. We’ve had many promotions for our guests and have received great feedback about our services and offerings. We also won Best Sustainable Hotel Arabia 2014! Professional Thai dancers

Etihad Takes Flying to Another Level By Rebecca Smith

L

ast month, Etihad Airways launched its new global brand campaign which coincided with the introduction of their new flagship Airbus A380.

“Nicole Kidman, as a globally respected artist, was the perfect voice and face for our story, and embodies worldly sophistication, intelligence, originality, and elegance - values which form the foundations of the Etihad brand.”

The star of the brand campaign is no other than one of Australia’s most famous exports, Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman who provides the face and narrative for the airline’s evocative, new ‘Flying Reimagined’ campaign.

Introducing the A380

Created by leading brand consultants, Landor Associates in partnership with Etihad Airways, the new livery is inspired by traditional Emirati design patterns, the landscapes of the desert and the geometric shapes found in the modern architecture of Abu Dhabi.

The official launch was held in Abu Dhabi on the 14th of March 2015 and attended by the international media. Nicole was on hand to answer their many questions such as why she chose this campaign over the hundreds of offers she must get in a year? From the onset she made it clear that she had to believe in the product before she put her name to it. She said: 'I spend so much time flying just because of my job, and also because I am a traveller and curious about the world. I have flown Etihad many times and it never ceases to impress me. I finished filming a movie yesterday and drove straight to the airport. After a very long flight, I strolled off as if I had just had a great night’s sleep in my own bed because I had slept the whole way in a proper bed. A luxury and not something that I can claim to be able to say about every airline.’

The design is really quite stunning and sets it apart from any other airline I have flown on. Unlike too many other carriers which primarily focus on the Business and First class passenger. Etihad has addressed all travellers' concerns, and many upgrades from design, space and amenities can be noticed in every class. Nicole Kidman experiences luxury, the Etihad way! The detailed, spacious washrooms

The TVC was shot onboard Etihad Airways’ new flagship Airbus A380 and in locations around the world, including various landmarks in Abu Dhabi.

The pristine business class on board Etihad Airways

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways Chief Commercial Officer said: “Etihad Airways is constantly pushing boundaries, taking inspiration from the world to provide a superlative in-flight experience for our guests. We are rewriting the rule book and reimagining flying by breaking away from convention and leading the way in innovation, design, style and hospitality. This new campaign has succeeded brilliantly in bringing our unique brand and service ethos to life on film, in print and on digital channels.

84

The Residence - combining comfort and luxury

The Etihad Airways A380 has transformed luxury air travel by introducing The Residence, which features a living room, separate double bedroom and ensuite shower room, making it the first three-room luxury suite in the history of commercial aviation. It costs $12,000 (approximately BD4,526) to fly from Abu Dhabi to London and is located on the forward upper deck of the A380 and can accommodate one or two guests (at the same rate) who will also have a personal Butler trained by the Savoy Butler Academy in London. Etihad Airways’ A380 also features new First Apartments, which are fully private suites with a separate reclining lounge seat and full-length bed; as well as the new Business Studio and Economy Smart Seat. Overall, it’s fair to say Etihad has just taken flying in comfort and style to another level.

Cheers!

The All-new Grand Carnival

B

in Hindi Motors, the exclusive distributor of KIA Motors in Bahrain has introduced the Grand Carnival 2015, full size multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), in Bahrain. As the final chapter in Kia’s design-led transformation story – which began in 2009 and has seen a comprehensive makeover of Kia’s entire model line under the direction of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer – the Grand Carnival’s CUV-like styling and proportions offer all of the functional convenience of the segment while defying its design limitations. In addition to innovative European-inspired design, it also delivers the exceptional interior volume buyers expect in the segment with ample passenger and cargo room, and a quiet and comfortable cabin.

Stylish & Spacious

The Grand Carnival’s wide stance exudes a modern appearance, and with a front fascia and cab-forward design, it projects confidence and strength. The MPV’s muscular face and clean, smooth look is highlighted by a fully integrated version of Kia’s signature grille and headlamps with LED positioning lights. The interior is spacious and well designed, and the generous use of soft-touch materials adds to the Carnival’s premium ambiance. The Carnival’s

“A new Lambda Gasoline Direct Injection 3.3-liter V6 engine replaces the 3.5-liter V6 found in the previous generation Carnival.” proportions provide flexible seating in eightpassenger and eleven passenger configurations and a multitude of storage options. It also offers more front shoulder room, greater leg room in the front, second and third rows, as well as a slightly higher hip-point, improving outward visibility for the driver. The Carnival is also the only vehicle in the segment outfitted with standard YES Essentials fabric technology to provide anti-microbial protection from spills, anti-static protection from irritating electrical shocks as well as stain-repelling and stain-releasing fabric characteristics appreciated by anyone who leads an active lifestyle.

Sturdy & Safe

The Carnival has been engineered with reinforced pillars that distribute impact loads with ultra-highstrength steel tubes that run inside the A-pillars and this offers enhanced roof strength. The Grand Carnival is targeted to earn the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 5-Star overall vehicle safety rating! A new Lambda Gasoline Direct Injection 3.3-liter V6 engine replaces the 3.5-liter V6 found in the previous generation Carnival. The 3.3-liter engine delivers more power than its predecessor, boasting 270 horsepower. The new 3.3-liter V6 engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission tuned for balanced control, power and efficiency. The Grand Carnival comes with a 5 year/unlimited mileage warranty from Bin Hindi Motors, which is the new name for AA Bin Hindi Group Automotive Franchises. car review Bahrain Confidential April 2015

Introducing the Porsche Macan 2015! Rebecca Smith takes this classy SUV for a spin on Bahrain's roads... and for an exciting off road adventure.

114

car review Bahrain Confidential April 2015

The stunning interior

Oh how I love my job! Last month, the nice people at Porsche lent me the Macan for the weekend. It’s meant to be the more economical version to the hugely successful Cayenne and according to some reviews the 2015 Porsche Macan ranks number 1 out of 16 Luxury Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on an analysis of published reviews and test drives of the car, as well as reliability and safety data. After spending three days driving it, I can honestly see why. It is a pleasure to drive. It feels and looks as chunky as an SUV. Yet, while driving, it suddenly feels like a small car as it’s extremely nippy (small) to drive - but with the power of a sports car. I can understand why the makers claim it will take you from the city through to rougher terrains because it handles so effortlessly in both environments. On a Thursday, you have to have your wits about you especially driving on roads such as the Sitra highway and Saudi causeway. But, the Macan gave me the confidence as it is sturdy enough to handle any crazy driver more than most cars. Even in heavy traffic, I felt like I was smoothly driving through the smallest of gaps. So, in my opinion, this is an ideal family car too. The interior of the Macan has received worldwide rave reviews because it’s stunning – something that all my friends remarked on. The one I drove had a red verging on brown interior (no one in the office could decide on the colour) and it was impressive, despite the dashboard looking like something from a spaceship; on closer inspections, it’s fairly intuitive. Although, I was left red faced in the Seef car park as I tried to remove the ignition key for over five minutes…

you don’t; everything is controlled by the key which the nice people at Porsche had strategically placed in the console beside me. I took it for a little off road spin close to the BIC and you could feel that its Active Suspension Management (PASM) is designed to leverage the power precisely according to the terrain’s needs. I was able to effortlessly, electronically control the shock absorbers for maximum effect and handling. I wasn’t being a baby and driving gently either! It was a smooth drive for most of it and so much fun. This car has been designed to target the sporty, trendy, twentysomething and that’s the impression I got as I drove it. There is loads of boot room too making it perfect for sports gear.

Would I get one? Yes, I was actually very sad to give it back!

Specs The Macan has five doors, five seats and boasts plenty of space – 500 litres which can be increased to 1,500 litres. The instrument cluster has a three-dial design and the rev counter is positioned in the centre. The newly developed multifunction sports steering wheel is inspired by the ultramodern concept and design of the 918 Spyder super sports cars. In the Macan, two manually operated and ergonomically positioned gearshift paddles enable fast and dynamic gear changes. The Macan S is the ‘base’ version of the Macan and is powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, producing 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. With Porsche’s excellent, paddle-shifted seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an active all-wheel-drive system with optional torque-

"There are fantastic seats, a center console covered in buttons, and a great new steering wheel derived from the one in the 918 Supercar. I'd look for this to become the standard across Porsche's lineup. So, outside it looks better than any other crossover in this class, and the interior is right on par." - Jalopnik vectoring, the Macan S is about as sporty as a crossover can get. The Macan Turbo is a quicker, even sportier version of Porsche’s all-new Macan crossover. It is powered by a 400-hp, twin-turbo V-6, mated to a seven-speed transmission, and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. opinion Bahrain Confidential April 2015

Taste Life! H There’s more to halal, says John Ridley. istorically, humans have been healthy, eating various diets, based upon local availability of foods. But by the 1970s, the supermarket increasingly became the only place that we could buy food; buying food from outside the global industrialised food system simply was not an option for most people. Despite the abundance of products in the supermarkets, real food was rapidly disappearing from the shelves; food was being replaced by highly processed food-like products. Eating produce grown or raised without synthetic chemicals, or pharmaceuticals was difficult, if not impossible. Cheap sugar and fat, and chemicals used to raise plants and animals in vast monocultures (with the resulting loss of bio-diversity), gave rise to the “western” diet of highly processed foods with which we are all familiar. The chronic diseases that now kill most of us can be traced directly to the industrialisation of our diet of highly processed foods. When we refer to “halal”, it’s usually in reference to meat prepared in accord with Islamic teaching; but halal actually means “permissible”, the antonym of haram - “forbidden”. Contamination of food is haram - forbidden in Islam.

116

The chronic diseases that now kill most of us can be traced directly to the industrialisation of our diet of highly processed foods.

In the West, some two-thirds of all adults are overweight or obese, and fifty per cent of those suffer from at least one preventable disease, including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, or cancer. With so many industrial food-like products in the “Western” diet containing fake sweeteners and flavourings, designed to deliberately deceive our senses, we can no longer rely on taste or smell to know what we were eating. Last month I wrote about food fraud in the ancient and modern worlds - little has changed.

John R Ridley

However, a revolution is taking place, more and more are realising the importance of often forgotten vibrant food traditions - real food eaten with others. With the resurgence of farmers’ markets, the rise of the organic movement, and the renaissance of local agriculture, we are entering a post-industrial era of food; for the first time in a generation, those who wish to return food to its proper context can do so. With a firmer grasp on our diet, we can rediscover traditional ways of thinking about food and our health. The more who vote with their forks for a return to real food, the more commonplace and accessible it will become. There’s rather more to halal!

Melissa Nazareth samples the new menu at

Primavera

The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa has always been one of my favourite fine dining places. There’s something about the restaurants’ ambiances that do it for me. Primavera, their Italian restaurant, and arguably Bahrain’s ‘little Italy’, launched their new menu and welcomed two Michelin starred, Chef Oliver Glowig on the team. I, along with other media members and guests, was invited for an intimate dinner. I loved the unpretentious plating style, in authentic Italian ceramics but at the same time maintaining the essence of modern dining. At Primavera, the chefs use fresh local produce, though cooked with Italian techniques. For

Vitello Tonnato at Primavera

instance, our main course was Bahrain’s favourite hammour dressed with a mondo Italiano cherry tomato sauce with capers and black olives. Before that, we were served Vitello Tonnato (read sliced veal dressed in creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce) which was oh so tender and rich – worked-up quite the appetite for our main course. This was followed by a tomato risotto – comfort food – with anchovy and burrata (read cheese). We washed these down with our choice of grape and mocktails. Not to forget, Chef Glowig served us his favourite Caprese cake (named so as it’s a specialty of Capri, an Italian village) with vanilla ice cream, the perfect, sweet and happy ending to a sumptuous meal.

The service at Primavera is impeccable and the whole dim-lit atmosphere with Italian touches – basil in pots on the table, the recreation of a famous Italian painting on the wall, the cutlery, the staff greeting to you with a warm ‘buona sera’ – offer the quintessential ‘Trattoria Moderna’ experience. Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
