Editor’s
Letter Last month, the team was having a ‘get together’ with our neighbours who have recently moved to Bahrain. They looked at all of us and announced that they were bored and ‘missed their social life back home’. They felt they had exhausted all their options and now there was nothing to do on this small, cozy island. We all just looked at them stunned and then burst out laughing. We then told them that we look forward to a night off when we can chill at home without missing out! It’s too easy to complain about the lack of things to do in Bahrain and then compare it to ‘your’ country of origin. More than often the memories are so much better than the reality. As we know for a fact – life in Europe particularly the UK is dictated by weather – is it raining or not? Long gone are the days when there was nothing to do here! The island is bustling with activities especially during this time of the year - the pre festive period. In fact we call it the party season as everyone wakes up from the very, long, hot summer. People just have to be prepared to go all out. The weather is gorgeous and we know this month there will be endless cocktail parties, barbeques through to comedy nights. To find out more check our calendar (Pg 10) and gastro section (Pg 114) as well as our Facebook – as that will include regular updates.
As not to stand out for all the wrong reasons this month, our fashion and beauty section (Pg 42) updates you on how to look trendy, this season, what fragrances and make-up to wear and how to glam-up your look with some timeless pieces by some of the best brands in Sheer Luxury (Pg 36). Don’t forget New in Town (Pg 22) as it covers all the latest and interesting places in Bahrain that we discovered on our exploring escapades. Plus it will give you even more proof that your grumbles of ‘nothing to do’ are unfounded. There are some really good dining promotions, cookery classes (Pg 117) and competitions that you can’t not say no to especially if you love food – like Julia Child put it, ‘People who love to eat are always the best people’. Our motoring section brings you the best of burn (Pg 104), reviews and more. Plus don’t miss the action at Bahrain International Circuit for the 6 Hours of Bahrain. On another note, can you believe we’ve hit the end of the year already?! We can’t wait to put our festive issue together. But before that, we hope you enjoy this one. Have fun, you guys and don’t forget to start saving for our Xmas pressies!

“YOU” A poem by Tony the Dogfather These words illustrate actual cases, and all too common scenarios. Please help Tony to continue his mission to rescue, heal, rehabilitate, and where possible re- home these innocent creatures; while promoting awareness in the community. You haunt me, every moment of every day; and at night, during a fitful sleep, I know you are out there, somewhere... fearful, abused, starving, injured, dying, or cast out, abandoned and alone, a testament to cruelty, and the ignorance of man. Why? You became an adult! Your owners left? You were no longer fashionable; You had bodily functions! or simply, you were not wanted, after all, you are only a creature; Oh, but what of the highest teachings? Increasingly, I’ve seen your bloodied face, disfigured by your own kind, in a desperate fight to the death, precluded by beating, and deprivation, a macabre “gainful” orchestration of man; Oh, but what of the highest teachings? Then, I’ve seen you offered as bait, a small ragged dog, with pleading eyes; your sad face peering from behind rusted bars. “Where is my family? Why am I here?” Man’s best friend betrayed by greed, stolen for sale, Oh, but what of the highest teachings? You are a feline, fastidiously house proud, Once loved? Carefully groomed, then the kittens came; many generations, easily sold, but you? You remain in a market cage, in your own effluent, too weak to protest, comatosed eyes, accepting your fate. Oh, but what of the highest teachings? You lie beside the highway, injured, whimpering. Sometimes you remain there for days, until you become just another animal corpse. Other times death is instantaneous, and may even be inflicted to whoops of joy. Oh, but what of the highest teachings? You suffer abuse at the hands of “humans”. Tortured, beaten, left dangling from a tree, jaws secured to muffle your screams;

or doused in petrol, and set on fire; brained with a missile at a wild life park. Oh, but what of the highest teachings? You’ve come to me in many guises. and as the moon begins its nightly journey,

I remember each and everyone of you, and the kindness of people, diverse in beliefs and culture, who make it possible for me to care for you, because of their conscience, inherent goodness and values, and, because of the highest teachings…

Mohamed’s passion for painting began as a ten year old back in third grade. His teachers and classmates had grown to be proud of his efforts. It was the constant encouragment that he received from his family and friends that helped him further develop his skills and produce art galleries and exhibitions in Bahrain. Mohamed began creating impressive canvas paintings for events, special holidays, and eventually opened his own gallery, where he sold a great amount of his paintings. His work was recognised and soon, galleries from across the world began giving him the opportunity to display his work. "At the end of the day, you need to love what you create." By being in good contact with fellow artists, Mohamed has managed to experience creativity that both young and older generations have come to offer. Appreciation for the entire art community is vital, it is also one of the main factors to help you grow and enhance your talent. Inspiration comes from many things, and there lies teh theme of his paintings. Being open to a wide range of ideas and concepts is both a fun and engaging way to learn new things and improve upon what you already have. Mohamed enjoys painting the surrounding nature, abstract portraits, buildings, anything that sparks inspiration is worth creating. Like he so rightly said, "It is important to not limit yourself to creativity and ideas." Art isn’t just a hobby for him; it is something that reflects his personality, brightens his mood, makes his day all the better. He will always be grateful to the people who buy his paintings. Mohamed strives for perfection, and in doing so, always wants to be assured that his customers are fully satisfied with what he does and how he does it; any amends required are altered before the official shipment.

Depending on the size of the painting, his medium consists of a wide variety; from the thickness and build of the canvas and papers, to different types of paints. Mohamed uses acrylic paint, chalk, contÊ, graphite, marker, pastel, ink, and water colour. The most common boards that he creates on are: canvas, fabric, glass, paper, and wood, and of course quality of the material used is also critical. Considering of opening his own art resort in Bahrain, he will be showcasing his newest and best artworks for sale. The Lewis Hamilton And The Nico Roseberg Editions Together with the brand ambassadors, better known as the famous FORMULA ONE drivers, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen have developed two special edition watches.
Ingenieur Chronograph Edition ‘Lewis Hamilton’
Featuring a lot of technology, the Lewis Hamilton timepiece comes with a carbon dial, push buttons, crown, crown protection and zirconium oxide screw heads. Ingenieur Chronograph Edition ‘Nico Roseburg’
Incorporating passion and emotion in his watch, Nico Roseburg brought in elements that would create his perfect watch. Combining titanium with a black and a bright dial did the trick. The silver plated dial has a titanium case with a crown, crown protection and screw heads made of zirconium oxide to give it that sporty look. The watch features a yellow seconds hand depicting the neon yellow helmet, which was his trademark for seven years, a rubber strap with embossed calfskin inlay and a grey quilted stitching.

Introducing The Timeless Collection, Tiffany T Tiffany T is the first new collection created by Francesca Amfitheatrof, Tiffany’s design director.
Tiffany T is a great collection that honors the company’s visionary past while still leading it into the future.

sheer luxury Bahrain Confidential November 2014
The Collection
The collection comes in 18-karat gold- rose, yellow and whit, alongwith a cool sterling silver, which adds a great crisp feeling to it. There are minimal bracelets and monumental hinged cuffs, some accented with diamonds, others metal. Some pieces even have a beautiful white ceramic that is warm and lovely to touch and surely adds that unexpected element.
Francesca Amfitheatrof
Her sketch of minimal bracelets show that there is a great power in refining a design until, she says, "it is just exactly what it needs to be, nothing more, nothing less".
TIFFANY T SKETCH BY DESIGN DIRECTOR FRANCESCA AMFITHEATROF
With the introduction of Tiffany T, Francesca Amfitheatrof takes the clean lines of the letter T and transforms them into a collection that leads Tiffany’s visionary past straight into the future. Her sketches of minimal bracelets that stack and layer, along with monumental cuffs show that there is great power in refining a design until, she says, “it is just exactly what it needs to be, nothing more, nothing less.” @Tiffanyandco #TiffanyT

Francesca Amfitheatrof deconstructed the letter T and extended it into jewellery that has an extraordinarily beautiful clarity. TIFFANY T SKETCH
“Tiffany has always been a company of great innovators, great dreamers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in design. ‘T’ felt like a natural jumping off point for my work here, a very exciting beginning. First, it pays homage to the Tiffany name, but there’s also a verticality and intensity to the letter itself that I associate with the energy of New York City. This is a place of courage and reinvention that constantly sparks creativity. Honestly, I can’t think of a more exciting place I could possibly be”- Francesca Amfitheatrof
BY DESIGN DIRECTOR FRANCESCA AMFITHEATROF The Tiffany T collection is available exclusively at Tiffany & Co., MODA Mall.
Amfitheatrof ’s sketchbook reveals the evolution of Tiffany T. A trained jeweler and silversmith, she explored a bold simplicity as rhythmic and effortless on paper as it would be in precious metal. Her elegant strokes underline the verticality and intensity of the letter itself. “I took the letter T, which is strong and graphic,” she says, “and I deconstructed

Does living in the Middle East cause hair loss?
H
ow many times have you heard people complaining about experiencing a sudden increase in hair loss since moving to the region? It is definitely a common complaint and one that appears to affect a great deal of women despite all the potions and lotions available at pharmacies and hair salons. Age doesn’t appear to be a factor either as there are a huge amount of young women under twenty one who are afflicted by this problem too. So what’s going on? As it turns out, not all hair loss is the same. There are four distinct categories but Before
Physiological Hair Loss is becoming far more common: This can be caused by stress factors, malnutrition, anaemia, scalp disorders, bad water quality, hair product chemicals, hair strengtheners, hair extensions, hair pulling and more. But your hair can recover if precautions are taken. Obviously hair loss cannot just be blamed on living in the Gulf. It’s an issue that affects millions of people worldwide. But there are certain factors that you can attribute to living in this region. Desalinated water has to be the number one villain for damaging hair especially blonde, chemically treated hair. After
Try rinsing your hair out with sweet water. But also it’s important to look at your diet and stress level. If you tend to dine out on fast/ convenience food most days, you will certainly be lacking in essential vitamins and minerals.
The Diet & Hair Loss Connection
Our hair is a bi-product of our bodies and is mostly made up of protein and long chains of amino acids and peptide bonds. To properly feed these structures, a healthy, well-rounded diet is required.
Stop Stressing
Easier said than done but ironically, the feeling of stress from hair loss aggravates it further. Prolonged periods of stress trigger the body to go into survival mode. The good news is, it appears, that after the body heals from stress, stress related hair loss tends to reverse itself after a few months, though this is not always the case.
Limit Chemical Treatments
Excessive bleaching, chemical straightening and perms can lead to damaged hair and breakage. Constantly using flat-irons, curling irons and tightly pulling your hair back can lead to the same fate. If the hair is starting to become brittle from chemical treatments or excessive styling, try weekly protein treatments or products.
Give Your Hair a Break from Extensions
It seems for many women, hair extensions are an essential part of their beauty regime. But depending on the type you use, they can also contribute towards hair loss. Anything that has to be physically attached to the hair will eventually damage it, causing thinning through pulling on your own hair. Therefore if you rely on weaves or any other type of semi permeant extension, it’s essential to give your own hair a break to allow it to recover. Effortless Hair Extentions are so discreet that you can't see the wire

That doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your long,

thick flowing locks as there is an alternative to semi permeant extensions. Effortless Hair Extensions instantly gives you thickness and length without damaging your own hair. It can’t disguise thinning hair at the front of the scalp, but it can give the rest of your hair instant volume therefore helping to distract from the problem. It’s a weft of hair held together by a fine piece of wire that slips over your head like a hairband. Then you simply blend some of your own hair over it. It’s suitable for most hair styles that are shoulder length or longer. It’s that easy and despite being new to the market has already won numerous amounts of beauty awards. Effortless Hair Extensions are made from the very latest in synthetic hair technology, ‘FEELsoREAL’ which looks and feels as good as real hair but doesn’t shed or tangle and lasts longer than real hair. It can be washed, blow dried, hot ironed and curled as you would your own hair. There are over 21 colours, 7 styles and 2 lengths – 16 & 24 inch – to choose from. Yaki hair is also available. It is so discreet that no-one needs to know you’re wearing anything and it allows you to have instantly thicker, longer hair while your own hair takes a break from extensions.

All About the ENLIVEN Project
AIESEC-Saving a Life AIESEC Members
A
IESEC is a friendly, independent organisation run by recent graduates and students willing to make a change in our modern society. The members work together with a spirit to fight discrimination of nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and race. The community offers a warm environment to new members as well. The approach is to alter or improve the staged worldview. Volunteers interact with members through music, various arts, sporting activities, and the broad network of languages. Like-minded members are all inhabited in a safe and secure milieu – their talents and weaknesses alike are brought to focus and worked on, slowly but surely. This allows the stretch of both communal and distinctive qualities to be recognised throughout the community, developing the minds of both the members and volunteers themselves. AIESEC focuses on leadership, the demonstration of sincerity and honest participation, and excellence.
60
By reviewing these factors, AIESEC is a step closer into justifying the right and wrong in our global society, and how exactly we can all help to make this world a much better place for the present as well as future. AIESEC is also in high support of the ENLIVEN project; a key point within the LEAP programme. The LEAP programme is a cultural exchange program that continues for the length of six full weeks. It is a wonderful experience that enables the youth to dive into a professional outlook of what new skills may be developed abroad. With LEAP, students can progress better, absorb more knowledge outside the classroom and think big with bolder ideas. The LEAP programme also highlights the importance of impacting the audience around you. Showing your true nature; hidden gifts, new skills, fantastic talents, people all around will be globally connected as everyone shares the love for
educational adventure outdoors and away. There are three main categories within the LEAP programme: LEAP TO TEACH – Volunteering to improve and change underprivileged societies in numerous countries. Meeting new people, gaining teaching experience; allowing the people that you come across to overcome the obstacle of illiteracy. LEAP TO EXPLORE – By working on a cultural development, volunteers will learn new languages and improve social skills; they will progress further as they explore and travel to different regions and places. This will surely impact a change they will hold all throughout their lives. LEAP TO CHANGE – Change the outlook on awareness, and bring it to the limelight; help the disabled, put global issues onto the table. Work with various organisations to put change into action and understand the community that will display the level of health, knowledge, and of course, lifestyle.

Living The Healthy Lifestyle A new diet concept takes the hassle out of deciding what food to eat and when; what if we tell you that you can now have carefully constructed healthy meals delivered to your door?!
A
re you the type that races against the clock to complete a meal, or lives on take-out and microwave dinners? It will not come as a surprise if you are one because that is the modern-day
urban life. But now, you no longer need to be concerned of your nutrients intake. Presenting to you Diet Mealz, an organisation that ensures that you eat healthy throughout the day. Diet Mealz located in Adliya, delivers healthy and nutritious meals daily, which are designed to maintain optimum energy levels while reducing the saturated fats and preservatives from your meals.
62
This is not just a diet plan my friends, this is a service that takes care of your dietary needs with a daily supply of nourishing meals for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Each diet is customised and assessed by the centre’s qualified professionals. The process takes into account a number of factors such as body water and muscle to fat ratios; based on this a low fat, low sodium and low sugar diet is prepared.
Being The Talk Of The Town
Nearly a year in the diet industry, the centre has gotten quite popular with their weight management programme. For every specification, menus can be
adjusted i.e if you are a vegetarian/lactose intolerant or you just prefer a gluten free diet. It is always important to implement an exercise regime to complement the diet plan. This will lead to better and faster results. If you are the type that needs a little push, visit Diet Mealz and they will show you a number of success stories they have had with their clients! So, look at it this way. It’s not ‘Diet Boot Camp’. It’s just a fun and challenging approach where everything delicious like sweet and savory snacks is very limited. We did say challenging! For more information, visit www.dietmealz.com or call Tel. +973 1722 7700
Dental Implants For Missing Teeth “Missing teeth can affect a person’s overall health,” explains Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital’s Periodontist & Implantologist, Dr Fady Abillama. Historically, dentures or bridge restorations were used as replacements for one’s lost teeth, but with limited results. “Dental implants, however, are natural-looking replacements for missing teeth that provide the same function as your natural toothroot,” Dr Fady explains. They have also been used to anchor various other types of restorations for greater success and patient satisfaction. The effects of missing teeth are detrimental to one’s long-term oral and medical health because teeth provide more functions than just the ability to chew. They are necessary for the health of the gum
as well as for the jaw tissues. A prolonged absence of a tooth will severely limit the possibilities for restorations. Missing teeth severely affects an individual’s confidence; well being and can make one look older than they actually are. A tooth should be replaced as soon as it is lost, this will retain one’s oral health by preventing bone loss, reducing movement of surrounding teeth and avoiding excess decay. It can also improve your smile and the shape of your face. Dental Implants are permanent and quite an appealing solution to replace missing or extracted
teeth. This is because of their proven success! “They are not susceptible to cavities. They are better than other alternatives like bridges because no additional teeth need to be altered to place the new tooth. They are designed to mirror the size, shape and function of a patient’s natural tooth root, and finally when doing an implant, there is no need to grind down healthy adjacent teeth. The implant provides support for the crown.” “The process is not as complicated as one may think. The first step is to install the implant itself, and then two to three months later, once the implant is healed, we restore it with an abutment and crown. A permanent crown is placed to restore the implant to the tooth’s natural appearance and function”. Wondering whether you are a good candidate for a dental implant? “All patients older than 18 years are candidates for implant surgery,” confirms Dr Fady. What You Need To Know About Osteopathy Most of us are slightly apprehensive when it comes to medical treatments. It may be because of the amount of money we spend, or because we have this nudging doubt if this treatment will work. Osteopathy on the other hand is, let’s say a type, rather one of the best types of manual medicine you can hope for.
A
t some point in your life, you must have faced trauma/accident/physical stress/emotional trauma. At the time, your body was able to absorb the effects. But over time, the strain remains and gradually leaves you with a physical strain. This is where Osteopathy comes into play. Osteopathy offers a method of physical medicine that effectively resolves physical strains that over time accumulates in your body. It’s basic knowledge- the maintenance of a good mechanical function is essential to good health. Let’s look at some Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is the way of detecting and treating the strained areas of the body like the muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. People who often have symptoms like long term back pain, migraines, trauma, chronic illness, immune problems, sporting injuries, bad posture, concerns with digestion, mostly get referred to an osteopath. To make understanding osteopathy simpler, let’s look at it this way. If a part of the body is restricted, then the other parts of the body must adapt to the situation and compensate for this, eventually leading to inflammation, stiffness and other health conditions. When the body is free of this restriction, Osteopathic treatments help the body with reduced pain, reduced stress and more flexibility and mobility, thus giving an opportunity for the body to heal itself.
64
How many treatments will I need?
Each individual’s treatment varies. After your first consultation, your osteopath will give you an estimate of how many treatments you will require. Let us introduce you to one of our favourite osteopaths – “Back On The Move”.
Back On The Move is the first
osteopathy practice to be licensed in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Treating and bringing relief to many conditions, Back On The Move has already become the buzz of the town. Together We Ride, Together We Make History Shaikh Abdulla Ahmed Ebrahim Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Director 2014, H.O.G. Bahrain Chapter talks about the Kingdom’s first H.O.G. rally and his love for Harley Davidson bikes and riding. Our main goal behind this initiative was to put Bahrain out there! Given the rise of Harley owners in the region, this was our chance to show the world that we not only have the best F1 and Air Show but the best H.O.G. Rally as well. We faced quite a few challenges the major one being limited time. We were racing against time but thanks to a fantastic team – the organising committee, Harley-Davidson dealer in Bahrain, Modern Age Events, Ministry of Tourism, the Municipality of Manama and the Ministry of interior we had a successful event. Kudos & Accolades poured in from Willie G Davidson, Former Senior Vice President & Chief Styling Officer of Harley-Davidson Motor Company, his son Bill Davidson, Vice President of Core Customer Marketing and his great-grandson William A Davidson, Company Co-founder who has been named Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum and Factory Tours. I’m proud to tell you that this rally attracted people not just from all over the GCC, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon but also all the way from Greece, South Africa, Perugia Chapter, Italy and Geneva Chapter West Switzerland. The Director of H.O.G. MENA, Ahmed Farahat called this is a great start to a great future. We’re planning for the next H.O.G. Rally well in advance. We learned a lot from the first and intend to create a good media plan covering TV, radio, news papers, magazines and social media. We also intend to attend different rallies throughout the year in the Middle East and Europe to promote the Bahrain rally and our culture. Shaikh Abdulla Ahmed Ebrahim Abdulrahman Al Khalifa
T 66
he H.O.G. Bahrain Chapter happened since we always wanted to do something in Bahrain, for Bahrain. This event put us on the map of rallies around the world. Though the previous committee
conceived the idea in 2013 we didn’t have the budget and man power then, as you know we’re a nonprofit organisation. So, we decided to give it one more year and in February 2014 approached the H.O.G. MENA office with the idea.
I got my first Harley thanks to the traffic on Budaiya road. I stopped by the showroom to look around and wait for the traffic to clear out and ended up with a bike, a dream came true! interview Bahrain Confidential November 2014
After numerous interviews about his work as a music artist, Bahrain’s beloved, Mo Zowayed gets upclose and personal in an EXCLUSIVE for Bahrain Confidential. Melissa Nazareth talks to
THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSICIAN
Mo Zowayed shares a light moment with his pet, Odus
W
hen I found out that we were not doing yet another run-of-the-mill interview with Mo Zowayed, I was ecstatic. I’ve always wanted to discover the person behind the fame because more often than not they are ordinary people like you and me. We found out that Mo is one such ordinary person but with an extra ordinary personality. “Hi, I’m Mo,” he said with a smile as he opened the door to welcome us into his home.
68
We had the interview in Mo’s room which is also his private studio. It’s a spacious room, uncluttered with minimalistic furnishing. As you enter you can see a set of speakers connected to a desk top; an acoustic guitar hangs on the shelf to the left which I later found out is what helped Mo rediscover himself! The head of Buddha on the desk particularly caught my eye. Mo picked it up on his trip to Nepal. There are other memorabilia too from places that he’s visited.
Travel Tales
Mo travelled to Nepal, a trip that also inspired him to write many songs. “I woke up each day, sipped on organically brewed coffee and wrote," he said. "I came back with a full note book most of which was gibberish but then if I can get even 20 per cent out of it, I’m good!” “I rented a scooter while I was there and rode on it throughout the day during which I saw the real

Nepal. I often met groups of people on my way. Once I came across a wedding procession, music blaring from these giant horns and girls dancing." "Though it was summer, the nights were cold and it would rain heavily sometimes. There were a couple of nights when I’d be riding in the rain, soaking it all in (literally) because I knew I was going to be back to Bahrain soon and wouldn’t get to enjoy such a great moment.” Mo has been to Thailand and Laos as well. “Laos is one country that’s untouched,” he said, “I took a 12-hour road trip with my friends, a continuous journey up a mountain. We were on such high altitude and the truck was a manual so we could actually hear the diesel engine gasp. There was a point when we wondered if we should stop for that day but eventually took it to the end.” I was happy to discover that Mo has been to my home country, India as well. “I love Indian food, especially butter chicken and garlic naan (Indian bread).” He also mentioned that during his visit to India he discovered that Indian music uses just one chord throughout a song which he finds fascinating.
Early Years The eldest of 4, Mo grew up in family with a musical history – his paternal grandfather was a renowned
Bahraini musician and his father is into the art as well. Did that make him feel too pressured? “Not at all! My grandfather had a different style of music. He passed away before I was born and I never met him. People ask me if I play Arabic music like him but I don’t. In the future, may be, but right now I don’t see myself pursuing that style. My mother’s family is not into music. I chose music because I like it. My siblings are not into music either though we’re hoping my sister will explore the art.” Mo is very close to his 9-year old sister. “We like doing things together and I love getting her things from my travels. I once got her this purse made of coconut shells from Thailand and she loved it.” Though a thorough optimist, Mo has had his set of low points too. “I lived in Canada for four years and had my band and everything there. In the fourth year, I came back to Bahrain thinking I’m going to be here just for the summer. When I re applied for my visa it got repeatedly rejected which was not a pretty thing because I had thousands of dollars worth of equipment and most importantly a life there. At first, I was not too happy. I had one travel acoustic guitar with me (the one hanging in his shelf) but I used to play the electric guitar. But looking back today I think it helped me rediscover myself because I now play the acoustic guitar too! I also found this amazing bunch
of creative people on the island. Mo is thankful to his support team for having contributed to his music career. Bader AlSaad, Mo's Manager and Jody Peck, his photographer are an integral part of this support team and joined us for the interview too. So, inspiration or work ethic? I asked Mo. “I am a songwriter and I do experience writers' block sometimes," he said, I have songs that are written through work ethic which take around a month and songs – the best ones – which take 10 minutes to write. Inspiration is not always easy to find but I know now that travel helps. I’m a nature lover; elevation and greenery stand out for me.” So what’s a typical day like for you? “I wake up, walk the dogs and have breakfast. I also teach music at a school. Then I work on my music, at least 2 hours a day. Mo finished recording an EP (Electronic Press) which is due to release early next year. “We (The Accidentals – Mo’s band) had stopped doing gigs for a short while but will now start again, say middle of November. We intend to add more depth to our gigs and plan on doing one every week.” Any message to aspirant musicians? “It’s important to play something you’ve created,” says Mo. "Even if it’s a couple of chords it’s your work! Express yourself!”

Stories Of A Trailing Spouse Your home is where your memories are, says Maria Sorger
H
aving lived in 10 different cities for the past 25 years or so, I am not surprised when people ask me, “So, where is home for you?” Personally, I have always felt that home is where my life story is. I have packed up my house with all its belongings, unpacked and
70
rearranged the furniture and memorabilia I picked up along the way, not once complaining that it was too much hassle. Yes, it was stressful and exhausting but it was worth it - for me, home is where I can sit on my own sofa, read my favourite books, look at my paintings and cook with the same pots and pans I did when I was in China, Australia or Indonesia. Every item
Maria Sorger
at home has a story – where or how it was purchased and the fun I had haggling for it in the local market. Therefore it does not really matter in which city you live, your home is where your memories are, where your story comes to life. This is even more important when you have children. Expat kids – especially when they are very young – do not remember their house – the recollections that they have are those of a home and what is inside it. They see their furniture being put in their room and automatically know they are home. It brings back that familiarity that is so essential to them and their stability. It’s not just about being in a new country – even though this is a great plus as children grow up learning to be open and accepting of every culture, race and religion; it's about living in a different society, being a ‘third culture kid’ a ‘global nomad’. As a parent you may wonder, in which culture your children fit, where their roots are. If you grew up in one place you know exactly who you are and where you belong. But if you are an expat kid whose parents moved constantly then where is your home? It is therefore imperative to share with children the values by which you live, to impart these values onto them - as these make up the core of who they are; these, together with their ‘home’ are their roots and the codes which will govern their lives no matter where they find themselves to be in the world. Therefore having a sense of belonging to a ‘home’ rather than a house will hold memories for them; the battered sofa where they played and slept on will be reminiscent of their childhood, so will the chipped vase that fell while they were running around the apartment, and that painting that was bought in a market a decade ago but which still stands the test of time – all of these will become part of their own global culture. Would I do it differently today? Definitely not – there is a sense of excitement as you arrive in a new house and, by a stroke of magic proceed to transform it into ‘home sweet home’. Maria Sorger is a marketing professional and MBA graduate. To share your feedback email: maria.sorger@redlemonsconsulting.com

CAR NEWS Kia Motors’ Brand Value Rises 480 Percent Kia’s increase in brand value according to this year’s study is more than double that of the top 100 companies’ average brand value growth rate of 7 per cent.”
S
ince declaring design management as a core driver of the company’s future growth and the hiring of President & Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer in 2007, Kia Motors Corporation’s brand value has skyrocketed by 480 per cent according to Interbrand’s exclusive list of 100 ‘Best Global Brands 2014’. This rise in brand value far outpaces the average growth rate of all other 11 automakers on this year’s list, over the same period. Kia first entered Interbrand’s annual 100 ‘Best Global Brands’ rankings in 2012, coming in 87th place and subsequently rose four spots to 83rd position in the 2013 study following a 15 per cent increase in brand value. During the past year, Kia’s brand value increased by a further 15 per cent, elevating the Korean automaker nine places to 74th position. Kia’s increase in brand value according to this year’s study is more than double that of the top 100 companies’ average brand value growth rate of 7 per cent. The significant increase in Kia’s brand value over the past year can be attributed to factors such as the continued roll-out of

high profile marketing activities including this year’s sponsorship of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and Australian Open tennis championship, an ongoing new product offering featuring the launch of twelve next generation or significantly upgraded models in 2013 and 2014, and a four per cent rise in average selling price of exported vehicles during the first half of 2014 compared to the same period of the previous year. Moreover, Kia’s global brand campaign based on its new brand identity introduced in 2012 – A Different Beat – has provided the company with great internal clarity and strong core brand attributes of “Vibrant, Distinctive and Reliable.” As a part of its efforts to strengthen the brand’s ‘A Different Beat’ image and global customers’ emotional attachment to the brand, Kia has been executing various innovative marketing activities since 2012 including sensory marketing initiatives such as the ‘Red Cube’ visual identity for dealerships around the world as well as introduction of a brand signature sound that is being applied to Kia’s television commercial end frame jingle and other customer touch points.

2015All-new Nissan X-Trail The Nissan X-TrailReview By Nick Cooksey
N
issan’s new X-Trail, with its much improved design over the previous model, is a not-socompact city-friendly SUV rivalling the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson. Slightly longer that its rivals, Nissan promotes the X-Trail as a seven-seater although a quick inspection of the third row of seats shows them to be pretty tight. It’s probably better to think of the X-Trail as a five-seater with an extra pair of seats if required. Driving position and space upfront, and generally all round, is perfectly fine. The modern dash layout is good and is made with lots of black and silver shiny materials. Creating new flavours is fun, writes Melissa Nazareth after an eventful evening at
Plums, The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa Burger at Plums
116
Though I love trying out new places, I’ve always believed that fine dining is not my cuppa; too sophisticated, I say thanks to detail like ‘where does the napkin go’, ‘which course follows which’, ‘does this knife go with dessert?’…you get the drift.
dish with a mango based dressing! Also, one of our desserts had pineapples poached with coriander! As a lay person I’d have never thought of these combinations but they worked so fantastically for these dishes.
My friend and colleague, Gregory Laguesse invited me to dine at Plums, one of Bahrain’s favourite steakhouses. I expected yet another fine dining evening but was pleasantly surprised by the experience! It was lovely meeting Yann Bernard Lejard, Chef de Cuisine and Ludovic Lantier, Executive Pastry Chef who gave me a sneak peek into their kitchen. I discovered that creating new flavours is so much fun! For instance, one of our appetisers was a scallop
We had burgers with black buns. Apparently the buns get their colour from a certain bamboo powder. It was also my first time tasting foie gras which tasted great with the burger patty and other condiments. Steaks at Plums are definitely one of the best I’ve tasted; succulent and tender. I picked a Japanese knife to work on mine; there are many including French and American. We discussed knife making as an art while
we enjoyed our steaks. Apparently the waves on the blade are unique to every knife. The evening ended with two beautiful desserts. My favourite was the one with coconut foam, pineapples and a cheese cake glazed with passion fruit, and crunchy crepe. We also tried another chocolate based dessert that’s a hit with guests. A meal for two at Plums would come up to BD52 inclusive of water and soft drinks. That combined with a low-lit ambiance and soothing music is just what fun, fine dining is made of! In The Spotlight
by Jenny Thomas
Emerging as one of the most talented and in demand producers in Electronic Dance Music today, Sean Tyas talks to Bahrain Confidential. From his love for trance, his favourite DJs, to the best party scenes, Tytanium 200 and his upcoming release, he says it all! You’ve tested a few new styles lately, and how has the shift been for you?
I think shift is the wrong word, but certainly expansion. What can I say, I’m always looking to expand my musical “ammo” so to speak, and I wasn’t 100 per cent satisfied with what I had in my “armoury” anymore. Ok these are stupid analogies, but you get the point. I wanted to learn some new techniques. Now, I can start integrating the new techniques back into my traditional sound. Let’s see how that turns out.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
I am definitely inspired by people like Paul van Dyk & Armin van Buuren, but not only keeping with trance. A ton of the Drum and Bass guys are locking it down pretty amazingly; Camo & Krooked and Drumsound & Bassline Smith are some of my favourite acts right now. It is just a whole new level of production.
120
Describe your favourite party/ performance.
I think my favourite party and event I’ve played was for EDC in Las Vegas a couple years ago. It’s such a massive “thing” these days, everyone in the world knows about it. Just the people in all their crazy outfits, the vibe you really truly feel there, is something no one really forgets.
Tell us about your DJ Mix album (Tytanium 200). How excited were you compiling it? It is always is nice to put together a physical release. It’s weird, only a few years back everything had a physical release. Now in the digital age, so few things are “tangible” products. So that’s always nice, at the end of all the preparations and making the mix etc,
you actually have a real product to be selling, not only an MP3.
Tell us about the shows you performed for during the tour of Tytanium 200.
Some of my highlights were of course the anchor show, NYC, which is always my “Home Base” show for the Tytanium events. Then to go over to the Zouk, Singapore, it’s easily one of the best clubs in the world. Other great spots were Holland at Fuel Beach Club, Prague, Israel, Ibiza, and Bangkok. Pretty much all over really!
Two DJs you want to share a stage with. I always love sharing a stage with Armin van Buuren, every ASOT is a huge experience every time. Definitely Paul van Dyk, I’ve played with him a couple of times already but would always gladly do it again. Like I said before, he’s definitely an idol to me.
Tell us about your releases - Lose My Logic & your remix of Alex Kunnari & Heikki L. featuring Joel Madden (of Good Charlotte) - City of Sin. Well, Lose My Logic was my collaboration that I have done with Noah Neiman in which we brought in Fisher to do some great vocals on the breakdown. here is out
music Bahrain Confidential November 2014
It’s a bit more of an upbeat and uplifting style than our Original Mix. The remix of City of Sin, when I first heard the original, I was really into the vocal that Joel Madden had done for it; I really wanted to give it a remix, with more of an edge. The guy’s got some voice that carries! This is also a bit different from my usual work but that’s what this year has been about for me: Exploration.
Where is home for you- New York, Germany or Switzerland?
Teufen, Switzerland. I love it here, totally quiet, and no close neighbours to complain about the noise. View Sean Tyas’s tour dates on: http://www.seantyasmusic.com/

If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
