Letter “Show Me Your Way Of Life” Now, let us be honest with each other – sometimes, we just need to love ourselves a little more. We look at our reflection in the mirror everyday, and think of ways to change how we look on the outside. But what if this month, we make a pact to change the way we look and feel on the inside? Doing this helps make you feel a lot more energetic, full of life and just happier, thus changing the way you feel both physically and emotionally. This issue is packed with everything that is going to help you feel that way. The team decided to focus on health, beauty and wellbeing, date time and more. We have for your spas, fitness, recreation, fun times for the family, travel, and fine dining to give you that much needed push to happiness. We kickstart this month by helping you rediscover your inner-beauty with finding your favourite beauty products, matching fragrances to your personal style, and taking some time off for ‘you-time’, or couple time (from PG 69). When we said relaxation and therapy, don’t forget that retail therapy is a very good way to de-stress,

especially with the launch of Spring-Summer fashion. (from PG 56) Even our contributors, this month must have read our minds because they have based their articles on self- motivation, coaching, self- development and anti- bullying. That being said, we would like to introduce our new contributor to you all. She is the beautiful Nadine Compton- a blogger and a passionate writer. One of our favourites is the 2nd part of our travel story. Looking at all those places, just tempts you into packing your bags and catching the next flight out! (See for yourself, PG 86). You should also make use of Bahrain’s wonderful weather. The island has packed itself with lots of things to do. (events calendar PG 8, nightlife PG 120) All this said and done, we do love eating out. Food is definitely a man’s true love. So, dine away and if you’re looking for a place to eat at, our Gastro section (PG 116) is there to help you make the best choice. OH! It’s COMPETITION time. Win concert tickets, flight tickets, spa time and much more. Check out PG 12, PG 14 and PG 16 for more details.

y fiancé and I were in Bahrain to attend a friend’s wedding. I happened to spot your magazine in our hotel. I found the events calendar, new in Bahrain, the directory and things like that very helpful. We were new to the island and knew nothing so it was almost like a tour guide. Helen, Paris Dear Helen, we’re so glad we could help! Hope you enjoyed your stay in Bahrain. Do visit again.

I

’ve seen you guys cover local artists and musicians since forever. Loved the articles in last month’s issue featuring Bahrain’s fashion and music talents! So many youth in Bahrain are coming out in the open, showcasing their work which is really putting Bahrain in the spotlight! When publications help to spread the word, it gives them that much needed push to keep going, further promoting the island. Good job! Rob Morgan, Bahrain Dear Rob, we’re ever so happy to promote local talent and you’re right that there is so much of it! In fact, to take our efforts a notch further, our February issue invites readers to get in touch with us about their talents. We will be featuring one every month! Do you love Bahrain Confidential? “My Love For Expressive Design Has Spanned For Years”

The term ‘beauty’ is interpreted as an amalgamation of notable elements in popular culture that are associated with it such as the Mona Lisa, The Three Graces and a Victorian-era corset. Beauty has been typified as an emotive issue that subjectively transcends mere physical appearances.

Paper Cafe is a branding system that is based on showcasing the core values of a self- expression stationery store through artistic statement, imaginative exploration and personal inspiration.

Beauty The Imbecility of Noise

Whatever They Become

-By Yojna Shetty

Being a designer is a risk of a profession in itself, you aren’t credited on annual reports or your managerial qualities. You are evaluated on how powerful your ideas are.

This poster constitutes the element of noise as a graphical component that is conceptualised with line, colour and shape through common elements of noise, such as pitch, volume and intensity.

The importance of psychological influences and personal development in children has been portrayed through the use of minimal form and contrasting imagery. Social issues like media, welfare and violence are represented through filled silhouettes against delineated figures that signify the vulnerability of children’s temperaments to these issues.

The project was created as part of a workshop to illustrate a series of Future Of The Left concert posters based on visual attributes and the content of their music. The multiplicity of human expressions has been explored in this artwork to convey the most prominent visual object in our social environment. This was based on the incorporation of typography and graphical composition of a legendary singer-songwriter, as integrated into pictorial form through an idiosyncratic placement of lettering and supporting graphic elements.

This is based on various aspects of habitual practices of impoverished beggars in India such as contrasting colours and other visual features that are inferred from their working environment.

My Design Life In A Nutshell It is truly difficult to place a lifetime’s worth of work in the field of design into a couple of paragraphs. When I was 7, I came home upset from school. I told my father that I didn’t want to take part in art class. My art teacher yelled at me in front everyone because I painted the sky green and the grass blue. My father took my crude painting, hung it up on his wall and told me that sometimes, it was important to paint outside the lines. I soon began experimenting with artistic expressions of design by myself. I was beginning to realise that I was creatively empathetic to all design forms. I learned the basic principles of design like typography, shape and color and began consuming as much as I could on designers and artists like Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Paul Rand and David Carson, and their principles of design theory. The time I freshly graduated out of high school, my parents wished the best for me and believed that pursuing an Accounting or Management degree would give me the financial stability required for a well-functioning adult. It took me a day to realise that I wouldn’t be able to work a job I didn’t enjoy doing for the rest of my life; design was no longer just a hobby. I knew I wanted to pursue it as more than just an expressive art form for a living. After acquiring a portfolio of extensive work from Mumbai in an undergraduate design program, I headed to New York to study at Pratt Institute. I learned to be unceasingly inspired by new challenges, and pushed beyond the boundaries of standard ways of thinking and doing things. From the stroke of a paintbrush to the pixelated form in digital media, I soon acquired an avid appreciation for creative expression. Design taught me to open myself up to look at every object in life uniquely. Being a designer is a risk of a profession in itself, you aren’t credited on annual reports or your managerial qualities. You are evaluated on how powerful your ideas are. You take up many different professions on being a designer; you have to be a thinker, a strategist, a communicator and an artist. Sometimes you hit a creative block, but you move on by being inspired by your environment, your professors and your friends. I find myself continuously quenching my thirst for thoughtful inspiration, and to converse with other creatively curious individuals who are responsible for communicating ideas to the world. Design means having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. And I’m just getting started.

ORESTE TRAETTO

General Manager of IBIS Seef Manama A little about yourself and IBIS, the brand you represent.

I am an Italian who started my career in hospitality in 1999. I joined Accor Group in 2000. Ibis is part of Accor Group. Ibis as most people around the world already know, it is an economic hotel. Ibis Seef Manama is an amazing economic and environment friendly project that consists of 304 rooms, 4 meeting rooms, a pool and a coffee shop. We have a strong concept with our customers. It’s called the ‘15 minutes guarantee’. It works like this. Say you have a concern/need/requirement (reservations, parking, rooms, breakfast, check in- check out) regarding the hotel, which you address to the staff. The hotel ensures that what your requirements will be met within 15 minutes. If the hotel cannot in the said time, that service will be given to you for free. Also worth mentioning is the unique breakfast timings that we have. It is from 4am to 12pm, fit for the early riser, the regular buffet and the late riser. This ensures that regardless of what time you wake up in the morning, breakfast will be served.

Qualities a commendable General Manager should possess. Well according to me, to be a respected General Manager, one must: • Expertise in the job you handle, • Passionate towards work, • Must be flexible and open- minded, • Must have the patience to listen to employee’s concerns.

Favourite spot in IBIS

I have to tell you, the rooms are quite comfortable. One of the roles I play is to test and make sure everything in the rooms is comfortable. I tested them couple of times just because the rooms made me feel secure and cozy.

What makes Bahrain a fantastic tourist destination?

44

Hospitable Bahrain

Bahrain has a culture, which allows visitors to explore Bahrain’s rich heritage. Also, foreigners like Bahrain so much, as compared to other GCC countries, is the friendliness of the locals. People here are very welcoming and friendly making you feel at right at home.

Kelly Armatage - Bahrain based Therapist talks about her groundbreaking self help invention.

A.S.K. A Serenity Kit ‘A sound mind in a sound body’ is the English translation of a famous quotation by the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, Thales, demonstrating the close links between physical exercise, mental equilibrium and the ability to enjoy life. Though stress and negative habits are a global issue, more and more people around the world are working on themselves to improve their emotional and psychological wellbeing.

How did you come up with A.S.K.? And does self-help really work or being guided by a therapist is necessary?

Tell us more about the launch in Bahrain?

Over the last 8 years of coaching people, I discovered a therapy method that re-wires the subconscious and can change any issue. It was initially 25 steps, but I brainstormed it down to 3 simple steps, so people can use it on themselves, without the need for a therapist. It is along the lines of other self help methods like CBT, NLP, EFT and TFT. This project has taken 14 months to complete.

How does it work?

The KIT includes a video tutorial, book, audio book and A.S.K. worksheets. It is quick and easy and can be used over and over again on all areas of your life. In addition, we have the free A.S.K. forum online, the worksheet which is free, plus people can access videos of clients doing the technique with a variety of

You could check more videos on our website. A.S.K. can be used for a number of issues including emotional problems, financial stress, weight issues, anxiety, relationship difficulties, parenting tension, sickness, career stagnation, phobias, addictions, trauma, and abuse.

Any successful A.S.K. cases you’d like to share with our readers?

We are launching A.S.K. initially in book stores in Bahrain, with a global launch planned after. As well as the KITS, we have plans to have 50 Therapists worldwide train as A.S.K. Facilitators online. It will also be registered with a university, so therapists can study for the A.S.K. diploma and use it within their clinics. We have plans to hold regular A.S.K. Seminars in countries all over the world. I see it becoming a new movement within the self-help sector and due to its fantastic results, it will go on to help many people. Letter From Bahrain

By John Ridley

”Imagine a kind world with no bullying.”

John R Ridley

A

couple of years ago, I was asked by a major radio network, to research and present a series of radio programmes on workplace bullying; it seemed an odd assignment for me, I knew nothing about the subject but that was the whole point of the series. Discovering what can happen in the workplace, and the effects of bullying upon victims and their families were shocking and distressing; I had no idea that people would take their own lives because of intimidation in their work. Criminalising cyber-bullying is a welcome step, but it remains the tip of the iceberg; little progress is being made on the prevention of violence in a person’s place of employment. Soon after the programmes aired, I was asked to do some work for a large multinational corporation, it seemed an interesting assignment - for a company that claimed to pride itself on it’s ethical business practices. Little did I realise that I too was to become a victim of workplace intimidation; after all, I’m 6ft tall and well built, such things never happen to me - or so I thought. A small percentage of employees see opportunities, and in order to seize the chance, are willing to harm others, or at least try - if they can get away with it. They are people who need to attack others to survive in the workplace; they accuse, threaten, annoy, pester, shame, raise their voices, or shake their fists to intimidate; yet their behaviour is irrational - as my tormentor found to his cost, his actions led to the cancellation of the whole project. An individual can’t stop the destructive acts aimed at them until they recognise what has happened, and that the acts are neither acceptable nor deserved. At first, the victim won’t understand the tormenters actions are arbitrary and capricious,

48

working a personal agenda to undermine the victim and the employer. Bullies continue with impunity, convinced they can get away with it forever, and they will continue until halted; whilst workplace bullying rarely involves physical violence, the ensuing mental anguish is as debilitating; the longer it takes to stop the greater the toll upon personal health. Responsibility for both the cause and cure of workplace bullying lie squarely on the shoulders of senior management and company executives, only

they can alter the work culture and environment and decide how bullying is treated when exposed. Just as company executives put people in harm’s way, they can provide a safe working environment and encourage a fertile and positive work culture. But, if executives instruct others to bully, targeted employees will never be safe. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster; he can be contacted at john@johnridley.media

young talent Bahrain Confidential March 2015

Felix Weaver In The Spotlight This year, we decided to take huge step in supporting young talent. After all, they are going to be ‘The Generation Of Tomorrow’. So we took to the streets to go hunting for those who had that X-Factor, the determination to be in the spotlight. Introducing to you, Felix Weaver. Myself: I am 12 years old, from England, but have lived in Bahrain all my life. I am home schooled so that I can concentrate on my music, which is my passion. I cannot stand England, its too grey and cold! So, every year we go to Spain. They really do have great skate parks and good weather is a definite plus.

Felix Weaver

Music: Music to me is something that can hypnotise people to feel at peace and truly happy. I have been playing since I was 3 years old, starting with drums, but now I concentrate on electric guitar and have 7 in my collection. I compose my own music and am currently working on my first album. I have had the opportunity to play solo performances at various clubs. Also, I have a band called “Bio Shock”, and we hope to play some gigs in Bahrain in the near future. Dreams and Aspirations: I would love to end up doing something in music, preferably heavy metal. To be honest, I just want to enjoy my music and see where it takes me. I hope that’s a professional musician in a band, touring and maybe even world famous one day, but as long as it makes me happy I don’t mind. It is important for me to be free and not be consumed with money and commercial things. Things I Love: Apart from music, love extreme sports, including wakeboarding, skateboarding, and snowboarding, scooting, body boarding and surfing. I love anything to do with nature, even travelling to new places. The more you travel, the more opportunities you find. Inspirations: People who can express themselves and not be afraid doing it are the ones that inspire me. For starters, my dad, he works, but being free is also very important to him. One day, I dream and hope to be able to play in a band like Metallica”

Amanda Navai

The Design Talk By Jenny Thomas

“While she was talking about inspiration, entrepreneurship and being pioneers in your chosen field, I knew that I would be inspired.” Amada Navai is an Iranian- Swedish handbag designer, more popularly known for her stylish and eloquently designed clutches and reversible handbags. How did the journey of designing handbags begin?

From the very start, I’ve wanted to do something of my own, start something, be an entrepreneur. It’s just that I did not know what at the time. When I switched jobs during the crisis, I became unhappy and desperate for a change. That’s when I attended a conference by Sahar Hashemi. She said this line, “You do not have to re-invent something; you just have to improve it”. That’s what inspired me and prompted me to create unique reversible python handbags at a comparatively affordable price.

Amada Navai and Rosemin Manji

What type of woman would you like your bags to attract? Actually not one type in particular. Because of the beauty of the bags and work that goes into each piece, these bags are ones that can be passed through generations. It suits any and all personalities.

The bestseller and trendiest bag.

3 words that describe your collection. Classic, smart, versatile.

Celebrities using your line. Sienna Miller and Kim Kardashian.

What plans for 2015?

I want to enter the US market. It’s a market that I haven’t entered yet. It’s going to be an eventful one, I’m sure.

I have to say, the reversible python handbag, definitely.

Does your background influence your designs?

Yes, a lot of my styles are inspired by who I am. Like say, the Iranian in me influences the vibrant colors like fuchsia, pink, yellow and orange, while my Swedish

interview Bahrain Confidential March 2015

Was a career in fashion something you wanted to do since you were a child? It was in a way. I did not realise it at the time. As a child, I always fancied drawing, Over the years, i drew less and less. When I went to law school, I ended up taking subjects like art history, painting and sculpting. It had nothing to do with my major. But I loved every moment of it. That's when I knew that this is what I wanted to become. Not too many years down the line, and here I am.

You launched your own line of handbags in 2009. Where does the inspiration for the designs come from?

As many people know, the specialty about my collection is that my bags are named after friends who stuck by me through the years. With my bag, I want people to see a confident woman. That is what inspires each and every design. To describe the bag, i would have to say that they are very meticulous; every bag has all the pockets you need to organise your life.

What kind of material do you use for the bags?

My bags are made to accommodate all necessary items, while at the same time, look beautiful. I use the finest Italian leather with exotic skins like cowhide, stingray, python and crocodile.

It’s Now The Hollywood Style Jenny Thomas sits down with the gorgeous creator of luxury handbags that finishes off with Italian leathers and exotic skins. It’s Meet and Greet Time with Khirma Eliazov. Bahrain Confidential’s

Winning over Hollywood style icons isn’t an easy task, especially when it is names like Sienna Miller and Blake Lively for starters. Khirma Eliazove is a former brand consultant and fashion editor, now a well known ‘Accessories Designer’. 54

What according to you is the trendiest bag now? Do you change your designs as the trends change?

To begin with, my collection doesn’t completely follow fashion trends. It is a combination of elegance and functionality. But if you ask me, women are starting to move from the phase where big bags were HUGE. It’s now more about clutches, cross body, satchels and smaller bags. Trends keep coming back. it's like a circle. Sometime soon, people will love big bags again.

What sort of bags do you prefer?

I prefer bags that help organise my crazy busy life; ones that are structured on the outside and smooth and soft on the inside.

Colours of 2015.

I love working with colours like deep wine, metallic and rich emerald. Khirma Eliazov’s collection is available at Saks Fifth Avenue

Who You Are

You can’t start a new chapter if you’re not prepared to turn the page, says Dilara Nagib. Dilara Nagib

“Find what you’re good at. Do what makes you happy. Chances are, one day you’ll come across something that’s both.”

“So, just a casual conversation – what do you plan to do with the rest of your life? No pressure or anything, but it might totally affect your future.” Finding who you are isn’t easy. Trust me. Just a year ago, I had people constantly telling me to “chill out” and “live my life” because “YOLO” they said. But you can’t start a new chapter in your life if you’re not prepared to turn the page. So, whoosh! New chapter. New page. New book. You’ve got all this ridiculous weight on your shoulders,

68

because you feel like you have to take everybody’s opinion aboard. Friends, family, teachers, your goldfish. But there’s a downer to trying hard to please everybody every waking second of every single day. It’s just not possible. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; but put all those “helpful” remarks together and you’ve just got a mess and anxiety’s mating call. Make sure the criticism you’re receiving is constructive, and not just bullying. Whether you’ve got a dad encouraging you to play sports until you’re beat because he wants to raise the

next David Beckam, or you’ve got a mum insisting you help out in the kitchen because she wants to be the proud mother of the next Martha Stewart, you just need to find your own thing. It’s unavoidable and you’ll have people persistently giving their thoughts on your life, but whatever you do, you’ll need to love it. What you do must be a passion from the core of your heart. Not just because someone told you you’ll end up homeless if you don’t sit behind a desk all day. Listen to Bon Jovi, because it’s your life. So – surprise, surprise – you get to decide what to do with it. You suck at football – big deal. You can’t cook for toffee – don’t worry; it’s not the end of the world. We still have room for the next Pablo Picasso, or Angelina Jolie, or Denzel Washington, or Stephenie Meyer, or Claude Monet, or Simon Cowell, or John Green, or Selena Gomez, or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Harry Styles, or Lionel Messi, or Jacqueline Wilson, or Cheryl Cole, or Kylie Jenner, or Will Smith, or Louis Armstrong, or Ludwig van Beethoven, or Britney Spears, or whoever you want to be. We’ll always have room for potential and effort. Wondering about talent? Nah. That part just shows up naturally if it’s mind over matter, if you really want it and you really work hard for it. Find what you’re good at. Do what makes you happy. Chances are, one day you’ll come across something that’s both. Don’t stick to something just because your best friend’s a pro at it. You are not your best friend. You’re you and you’re lovely. It takes time, but everybody’s trying to find their way. Even the person writing this. Dilara Nagib is 14 years old and currently studies at St Christopher’s School. She enjoys reading and writing in her spare time, and aspires to one day become a professional columnist for a reputed magazine in California.

Dedicated to provide only the best to their customers, Bliss spa offers only the best treatments that will leave you feeling like a million years. Owned by the wonderful Muna Akhtarzadeh, Bliss Spa has varieties of facials that answer your skin problems.

Treatment room

One of our favourite facials is the Crystal Clear Facial. This is their signature facial that provides fascinating instant results. We know because we tried it! They use oxygenated, sterilised crystals to remove the dead skin cells and regenerate fresh new ones leaving your skin silky soft after just one treatment. This facial specifically treats acne scars, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Also, on the top of our list is Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument (CACI). This treatment uses micro-currents of electricity to stimulate facial or other muscles in the body. The muscles are gently exercised, leading to an increase in the production of protein. This tightens and firms up the muscles and reduces slackness and restores a firmer shape and tone to the face or body. Let’s not forget the packages they have for the body. They have massages that target your problem areas, body scrubs and more. One definitely worth mentioning is the Body Slimming and Contouring using LPG. We have tried it and we LOVE IT.

VIP Room

It is an all-natural, non-invasive alternative to surgery, with proven results. Yes, it’s true. They use Endermologie, which is a science of mechano stimulation that acts on skin aging and breaks fat, or the word we fear, cellulite; it breaks cellulite in a natural, physiological manner. One of the reasons why we love this spa is because they were first in the Kingdom to start the treatments we mentioned above and they just know how to do it the best! That being said, these were just some of our favourites. If we could choose them all, we would, that’s how result-oriented and relaxing this spa is. Located in Adliya *Ladies only

Massage: Getting In Touch With Its Many Benefits Massages are commonly known to help you relax and unwind from the pressures and stress of your everyday life. But massage therapy is more than that. It helps you relax muscle tissues, improves circulation, and enhances delivery of oxygen and nutrients and so much more. Massage therapists from Back On The Move helps us understand a little more about the various massages that are available and how they benefit our body in the long run.

Sports massage:

This combines Swedish- Shiatsu and other techniques, which helps prepare athletes for pain performance, prevent injury as well as treats injury. The focus of a sports massage is not on relaxation but preventing, treating injury and enhancing athletic performances.

Pregnancy Massage (Or Prenatal Massage):

Tracey Morgan – Therapeutic/ remedial massage specialising in lymphatic drainage, sport (pre/post) myofasial release work.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Highly recommended for athletes as it aids in the breakdown process of scan tissue. This type of massage is best suited for stiff and painful trouble spots like the neck and shoulder. It targets the deeper layers of muscular and connective tissue.

Trigger Point Massage:

The massage therapists are trained to know the proper way to position and support a woman’s body during massage and how and when to modify technique. The pregnancy massage is known to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pain, reduce anxiety and depression.

Myofascial Release:

All muscles are covered by a thin layer of tissue called “fascia”, which helps maintain good body posture, provide support and strength to the muscles. Very often, fascia can tighten or tend to get stuck (adhesion) in places that prevent relaxation. A Myofascial massage helps stretch fascia to elongate, which in turn results in postural improvement and noticeable relaxation of cramped groups.

Tanita Still – specialising in Therapeutic massage, Sports massage (pre/post event), Pregnancy Massage, Myofacial Release and Basic Reflexology. She will soon be qualified to do Pediatric Massage

This type of massage helps alleviate the source of pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. If you opt for t his massage on a regular basis, it can naturally help manage pain and stress from chronic injuries.

Neuromuscular Therapy:

Neuromuscular therapy treats the underlying causes of chronic pain, which involve the muscular, and nervous system.

Amelia Ferrer and Jeffrey Ginete – massage therapist, remedial/ deep tissue sport massage

Shiatsu:

Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”. The basic idea for this type of massage is to fix and balance the flow of energy in the body. It improves the circulation, relieves stiff muscles and alleviates stress that contributes to lack of energy. Shiatsu is a rejuvenating massage.

APPLE CIDER VINEGARGENIUS INVENTION

What we are about to tell you isn’t a magical shortcut… oh wait it sort of is! We are talking about Apple Cider Vinegar. This is probably one of those items sitting in your kitchen, that doesn’t cost a lot of money and it can be benefit you, your home, your lifestyle, and more. We are about to tell just how.

76

Home & Lifestyle

Beauty & Grooming

1. Non-toxic, all-purpose cleaner. Say bye to harsh chemicals, all for a clean home. Apple cider vinegar can be used in the kitchen and leave your floors looking sparkly. All you have to do is mix couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water, mix it into a spray bottle, and get to work.

1. Away with dandruff. Mix a tablespoon or two in a glass of water and rinse your hair. This helps reduce dandruff. Now, if you want to get to the ROOT of the problem, combine ¼ cup apple cider vinegar with ¼ cup water, pour it into a spray bottle, apply it to your scalp and let it sit for at least an hour before rinsing.

health updates Bahrain Confidential March 2015

2. No more stinky room. To rid your room of any bad odour, pour apple cider vinegar into a shallow bowl and put it where you think it smells the most. Leave it out for as long as it takes for the smell to disappear. 3. Grow your garden without weeds. Apple cider vinegar can be used as a fertiliser especially if you are trying to grow, let’s say blueberries for instance. It can also be used to kill weed. Pour it directly on the areas infested with weed for them to stop growing. 4. Keep pets flea-free. Dilute apple cider vinegar with water and rub the mixture into their fur to get rid of fleas. *It is safe to check with your vet before you do this.

2. Bye warts and bruises. Though we wish they were exclusive to wicked witches, warts can happen to anyone. When they rear their ugly heads, try using apple cider vinegar to eliminate warts. Dip cotton in the vinegar and secure it to the affected area and leave it for the entire night. Now for bruises, follow the same method, minus the overnight bit. 3. Whiten your teeth and say no to bad breath In the unlikely case where you teeth need whitening, depend on apple cider vinegar. Rub it into your teeth for that white smile. And if you are a person who has bad breath and is shy to admit it, just use apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash and feel confident again. 4. Deodorise your feet. So when were talking of odour, let’s say we meant odour of any kind. That applies to stinky feet too. Splash some apple cider vinegar on a tissue wipe your feet clean of the smell.

Food & Drink 1. Make a nice sauce or marinade. This is how we all know apple cider vinegar- in the form of a condiment. That is because it adds life to your sauces and marinades. Just so you know it goes extremely well with kale chips and apricots 2. Make your own tasty juice. They say a spoonful of apple cider vinegar is good for your health. But why go through all of that when you pour it in with different kinds of juice. 3. Flavour your soup. Apple cider vinegar can also add just the right punch of flavor to soups. It gives it just the right amount of OMPH to it!

Health & Wellness

4. Get ahead with your baking. When we said baking, we meant baking bread and the other shindigs. Apple cider vinegar helps give your batter that rise that you wanted. And the best part is that because the flavour is so mild, you will barely even notice its there.

1. No more bad stomach. When you are rolling in bed because you have a bad tummy after last night, just think of one thing- Apple cider vinegar. Yes we know we probably are going overboard with it, but it deserves the attention. So, if you drink apple cider vinegar along with water, it helps get your tummy in order. That is because it contains anti-bacterial and antiviral properties. 2. Stop the itch, stat. Your body is itching, and your going mad, apple cider vinegar will give you the relief you need. Apply the solution directly to your itchy area, and enjoy the moment of relief. 3. Sore throat and sinus healer It’s that kind of weather now. Your voice doesn’t sound the same; your sinus is killing you. Mixing a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar with warm water and gargling this mixture chases those germs away. This creates an acidic environment that stops the icky cold-causing germs from living in your throat. Also, try vinegar, honey, warm water and cayenne pepper and sip helps you feel better from nose to chest. 4. Feel energised. If you feel low on energy, boost your energy with this drink. Mix apple cider vinegar with water and add a little bit of honey for that sweetness.

Giving Coaching A Fresh Prespective Coaching is a skill that has one of the highest returns on investment one study reported 800%! It is not surprising that once your managers start coaching, you can expect breakthrough results for your entire organisation.

F

or over two decades, people have known the power of coaching rather than “telling”. Yet the default technique for managers still remains the “telling” approach. I admit, in a bid to reach goals, it is tempting to direct – but when we ‘tell’ people what to do, we only get limited results. “Telling” does little to help them, or the team further down the line. On the other hand, coaching people to work things out for themselves and find their own solutions has a huge impact on performance, and ultimately frees up a manager’s precious time. Neuroscience research reveals that learning new things and changing unhelpful behaviours can only be done by creating and practicing new habits – which “wire” new “maps” into the brain. No two people can possibly have the same brain. As we go through life having experiences, our brains are continually making new neuronal connections. The more these connections are used, the more they become “hard-wired”, creating a unique “landscape”. As an analogy, think how a stream carves its way through the land, eventually becoming the Grand Canyon. Because of this uniqueness, we all experience reality, learn, and make sense of the world in very different ways. This is why the “telling” approach is ineffective. If we tell someone how to do something, we are operating from our own brain’s “map of the world”, not his or hers. What makes sense to us doesn’t necessarily make sense to someone else. The two key tools of coaching, generous listening and asking questions work so well because they stimulate people to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Every “aha” moment is a new circuit being “wired” into the brain.

78

Coaching doesn’t generally over-analyse unhelpful thoughts and behaviours as this can embed them even more. Instead, the coach will help the coachee focus on the all-important, acquisition of new, more meaningful maps (new perspectives). Once these new maps have been created, practice is essential to embed the new thinking, and a coaching manager must support an employee in using these new paths, especially in the early stages when the temptation to revert is strong.

Remember! An old path never disappears. This explains why we sometimes have set backs – particularly if we are stressed, and we revert back to old habits. But as we use the new path more and more, the old one starts to get over-grown and less attractive to use. To give an example, I once had a sales person in my team who was convinced she was lousy at her job. My “telling” her she was good simply fell on deaf ears because my map did not correlate with her deeply embedded neuronal map. Things only changed when I stopped asking ‘Why?’ questions, and instead asked her to give me a daily example of her good work. Over time this helped her to create a new “map” and repetition strengthened this neuronal pathway. Coaching-management styles can double the productivity (and engagement) of employees. So what is the lesson for a manager who wants to improve staff performance? That’s right – resist the temptation of "telling" instead listen, and ask questions until they come up with the answers for themselves. That, in a nutshell is coaching! Carpe Diem: Seize the day Go with the flow and enjoy the journey, says Maria Sorger.

Maria Sorger

“Why not take the plunge and head in the direction you have set for yourself? When conditions change, pause, reflect and then re-focus on the path you want to follow.”

T The coffee shop was crowded with women. Cheerful, energetic, happy women. They had dropped their kids off at school. Their husbands were at work. And they were ready for some serious ‘ME’ time - those precious moments when they connect with girlfriends and feel part of a community that understands them totally and unconditionally. As I sat across the table from my friend she informed me that her husband had just extended his contract and they would be staying on for another year. Whilst she loved being an expat in the gulf with all the little luxuries it offers, her biggest regret was that she had not started her business when

80

they arrived two years ago, thinking it not worth the investment or effort. “Our plan was to be here for 2 years only.” How many times have you heard people say that? Most probably all of us have said it again and again, but what we all seem to forget is that circumstances change, things do not always proceed according to a well laid out plan, at least not for expats, and before we know it we stay on longer than expected. And we reproach our self for not starting something back then when we first arrived. Seize the day. It is such a powerful and profound statement yet very simple. Three words that describe the way you should live your life. Do not wait for

tomorrow. Do not dwell on the past. Live for the moment. ‘If only’ must not exist in your vocabulary. You have a dream, an idea, you want to start something new – go ahead. By putting limits and boundaries, you are in fact creating excuses for not taking that first step into the unknown. What would have happened if my friend had started her business and then had to move? Best case scenario she would have sold the business – worst case she would have closed it. But think of the experience she would have gathered along the way, how much richer and more fulfilled she would have been. Carpe Diem. It is meant to give you the impulse to act. Don’t wait until you are ready. Don’t wait until the time is right. The right time is NOW. Each one of us has dreams and aspirations but very often we hold back, hanging on to the biggest excuse ‘I am here temporarily’. Why not take the plunge and head in the direction you have set for yourself? When conditions change, pause, reflect and then re-focus on the path you want to follow. Until then, go with the flow and enjoy the journey. As the famous British comedian Hugh Laurie said, “It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.” Maria Sorger is a marketing professional and MBA graduate. To share your feedback email: maria.sorger@redlemonsconsulting.com

#selfdevelopmentsaturday Nadine Compton talks about a way to sightsee if you’re a history buff residing in Bahrain.

T

here’s this new hashtag trend that I’ve been noticing. I’ve seen it placed at the end of posts on my Instagram and Facebook feeds. It’s called #selfdevelopmentsaturday and it encourages users to better themselves during that day of the week. While I had no intention to “humblebrag” about my weekend plans to my virtual friends, I thought it would be a good idea nonetheless to educate myself, one Saturday and I chose the Bahrain National Museum to do so. It being a weekend, there was a crowd, but nothing too big to deter an avid history buff or a bored family looking to educate their young children. Right from the get-go, the museum is impressive. Beside the entrance is a wide space with statues. Many of them, I was surprised to see, represented the female figure. The layout of the building allows visitors to walk through the history of the island and its people, from ancient to modern. What I found most interesting was one of the first exhibits, which held recreations of the famous burial mounds where locals buried their dead along with jewellery and pottery. This is a unique and important aspect of Bahraini history as the mounds

and their artifacts tells us about prehistoric societies, ones that are widely considered unimportant amongst many religious hardliners as they predate Islam. The burial sites are very rare, (at their peak they numbered 76,00) and at present they are under threat from the expanding developments across the country. There was also a hall devoted to Islamic texts, that held copies of the Quran with gorgeous covers and decorations on the inside pages. A separate hall displayed coins from the ancient society of Dilmun, considered holy land by the Sumerians. Many people know the Epic of Gilgamesh, but they don't know that Dilmun was included in this story and was described as ‘Paradise Garden’. The depictions of animals, people, and scenes from everyday life are also very telling for historians, as they now know what these people considered important. As the halls move forward in history, you can find life-size recreations of traditional Bahraini life. All the exhibits are labelled in both Arabic and English. For visitors interested in art, there is also a gallery inside the museum featuring international pieces of modern artwork. A coffee shop is located

Nadine Compton

near the exit, but it never seems to be open. You’ll need to get your caffeine fix somewhere else! All in all, I’d say that the Bahrain National Museum makes for a good “me” day. If you want to bring your noisy kids, that’s entirely up to you. Opening hours are from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Parking is free while the entry fee is BD1 per adult and free for children under 12, so you really don’t have an excuse not to go!

Weekends are not just about partying and nightouts. Especially if you’ve got kids, fun takes a whole new meaning. We hit Bahrain’s roads to discover some really awesome places where you can enjoy as a family.

#1 Amwaj is a great place to escape over the weekend. You could enjoy a lazy brunch with your loved ones at one of the many restaurants in Lagoon Park. Our exploring team has confirmed that a couple of new ones have been added to the list. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, the Amwaj Marina offers boating lessons through their Sail Laser Academy, and water sports including windsurfing, jet skiing and more! There are various areas where it’s possible to reach the sea to swim or just sit on the shore and watch the kite surfers. Though not strictly a public beach, this place attracts quite a lot of people who can’t all live there. For more info visit amwajmarina.bh

Jazayir Beach, more popular with locals and expats in the Kingdom as Zallaq beach is one of Bahrain’s few truly public beaches.

Bahrain Fort or Qal’at al-Bahrain is tucked into a corner of Manama. Being on the outskirts of the city, it offers breathtaking views of the sea and highrise buildings of the Bahraini capital. Dozens of tourists flock this place to tour the historical heritage and visit the small museum on site (you need to buy a ticket). You’d find an array of items here including pottery and stamp-seals, more like a less extensive National Museum of Bahrain. The complex has a pretty good museum café too. Just sit on the terrace, enjoying the breeze as you sip a coffee and overlook the fortress and harbour.

It’s right down past the Bahrain International Circuit. Just pack a picnic basket, drop in that beach ball (don’t forget the sun screen) and drive off – if that does make you the best parents in the world, we don’t know what will! The sandy-ish beach has several kids’ play equipment too. A heads-up, Jazayir turns into a ‘bachelor’ hub over weekends, sometimes though a mid-week afternoon visit is a great time for families. And yes, avoid revealing swimwear and ‘drinks’ while you’re here as a way of appreciating local customs.

Al Dar is an ideal place if you’re looking at a beachy weekend with barbeques, water sports and sun tans. You will have to pay a nominal entry fee – BD5 for adults and BD3 for kids from 1 to 15 years – and don’t forget your CPR or passport. You board a boat from Sitra Fisherman’s Port and the Coast Guard there will ask for it. It’s a small island, perfect for say around 150 guests at a time so you might want to go early if you’re not a crowd lover. This beach spot is a little private so you can go all out with your swimwear but you might want to dress modestly for the boat ride. Al Dar’s opening hours are 9am to 5pm.

Lost Paradise of Dilmun (LPOD) is Bahrain’s first and biggest water theme park and yes, manmade beach. A really popular family destination, this place is worth your time and not less than a whole day! And now’s the best time because the weather is great. We loved the wave machine there on our recent trip, it’s common with water theme parks, nonetheless fun! If you want to relax, just lie down under the sun or if you’re looking at something more exciting then there are a whole bunch of water-based rides too. The entry is BD15 for adults and BD7 for kids under 1.2m tall.

For more info, call Tel. +973 1770 4600

For more info, call Tel. +973 1784 5100

#5 Bahrain Sailing Club is right next to Jazayir Beach. It has its own private beach area and there’s a snack bar and pools plus boat rental and a small number of chalets. Sporting events take place here, during the winter and so if you’re lucky, you could catch one while you’re at the club. The sailing club has a membership but in case you don’t want one or are here as a tourist, you could just pay BD3 for the day. If you want some privacy with your family, we recommend you book a chalet for BD40, for a family of four – two adults and two kids. It’s pretty safe as well because the security doesn’t allow groups of men to enter, just ladies and couples. For more info, call Tel. +973 1783 6078

#7 Wahooo!, at City Centre Bahrain is another water theme park that you can go to with your family. It’s on the same floor as the mall’s food court. Though a much smaller water park, this indoor-outdoor water park is packed with fun for the full family. There are a range of attractions to look forward to including Master Blaster, Sidewinder, Matt Racer, a Multi Level Rain Fortress, Wave pool, Toddler pool and Lazy River. Wahooo! also has packages for birthday parties if you want to surprise your little one this year! Swimming and surfing instructors are available too so if you’re not really the adventurous one, you can learn to have some fun! For more info, visit theplaymania.com

#8 Ramli Mall, has been gaining popularity as a family mall over the past 5 years or so. There are events happening every other day like coffee mornings, fun for kids, radio road shows and others. The play area is on the same floor as the food court so you don’t have to worry about the kids. Just let them have the time of their life while you relax and have a cup of coffee or shop till you drop! The mall’s got all your favourite brands and even a mother-daughter play parlour on the play area floor! Ramli Mall is located right next to the coffee round about at A’ali (near the driving school).

#9 Bahrain Farmers’ Market Stocking-up on locally grown produce just got more exciting. Bahrain’s favourite Famers’ Market in Budaiya garden is the ideal place to spending the weekend with your kids. Teaching them to eat healthy will go a long way and hey, you get to have fun too. Grab a bag full of juicy tomatoes for your daily salad or even a bottle of sweet, home produced honey for your green tea. There’s something for every kitchen. These markets are open every Saturday until 25th April from 8am to 12pm.

Taste Life!

All about fraudulent food

“Next weekend, should you find me selling fresh locally grown pineapples, you may think something to be amiss - especially during the winter.”Says John Ridley

A

s long as profit can be made, there’s always someone prepared to masquerade a product as something better; since the earliest of times, an unscrupulous few have deliberately mis-sold or adulterated food - it’s the world’s second oldest profession. In ancient Rome, winemakers sweetened wine with lead; in the middle Ages, despite the harsh penalties for selling adulterated food, unscrupulous bakers regularly added potash, tree bark, or twigs to their bread. As industrialisation and urbanisation spread, an increasingly complex food supply chain developed, leaving consumers knowing less and less about the origins and ingredients of their food. Seizing the opportunity to boost profits, during the nineteenth century, many dairy farmers in New York fed their cows with cheap waste from distilleries. Milk from the

malnourished cows was watery and blue-tinted. To improve the appearance, farmers added starch, plaster, chalk and eggs, then diluted it with water, before selling to the poverty-stricken residents of the city. The consequences of the adulterated milk were incalculable - many children died; the backlash prompted landmark food safety legislation. Today, food fraud and adulteration continues, the proportion is probably no greater than in ancient Roman times; but, for every incident, far greater numbers of people become victims. In 1985 a small number of Austrian wineries added antifreeze to their wines, making them seem sweeter and fuller-bodied; many involved in the

John R Ridley

scandal served prison sentences or faced heavy fines. In the UK, during February of this year, peanuts and almonds were discovered being used as a replacement for cumin in prepared meals; the undeclared substitution of the spice with nuts was potentially life threatening to sufferers of nut allergies. We’ve embraced access to low cost food, valuing price above quality; this has created a complex food chain spanning the globe, and as a consequence, we’ve become disconnected from agriculture and the production of our food; with vast profits to be made, nothing is sacred. Today’s complex global food chain is notoriously difficult to police and regulate as food manufacturers source ingredients from China and dozens of others countries. Recently in the US, wheat gluten from China, used in “all natural” pet food, was adulterated with melamine; it killed thousands of cats and dogs. China has suffered many domestic food scandals too, including tofu fermented with sewer water, gutter oil re-sold as vegetable oil, arsenic in soy sauce, bleach in mushrooms and metal cadmium in rice. The US and EU frequently attempt to block hazardous products entering the food chain, but with their huge profits at risk the unscrupulous will find other routes into a lucrative market. When the US imposed a hefty tariff on Chinese honey found to contain antibiotics (used to keep industrially reared bees healthy), the manufacturers rerouted their produce to other countries before hitting the American supermarkets - labeled as Indian or Argentinian. Regulation is essential, but can only provide limited protection against fraud and adulteration; alongside regulation, we all need to build and develop our own relationships with good local farmers and producers. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster; he can be contacted at john@johnridley.media

recipe Bahrain Confidential March 2015

Delicious Home Cooking Zucchini is the new pasta. Well that is what the internet says. And we aren’t going to try denying that because we sort to believe it ourselves. If you’re a health freak (you would like to be one/ think of yourself as one), then this recipe is definitely one you need to try. This is a flavourful dish and mixing them up just reminds you of the nice windy weather with that little bit of sunshine that we can enjoy only for a limited time now. ZUCCHINI NOODLES WITH FIG, ARUGULA AND TURKEY (GLUTEN-FREE) - serves 4-6 ◆ 1 cup turkey slices, chopped ◆ 2 shallots, minced ◆ 1 garlic clove, minced ◆ 3-4 medium zucchini ◆ 1/2 cup Romano cheese, freshly grated ◆ 12 fresh figs, quartered ◆ 3 cups wild arugula ◆ 1/3 cup torn basil leaves ◆ Extra virgin olive oil Let’s get cooking, shall we! ◆ Sauté turkey slices, shallots, and garlic in a large skillet over medium heat for 6 to 7 minutes or until the turkey is golden and shallots are tender. ◆ Remove from the pan and set aside. ◆ Cut zucchini into thin spaghettishaped noodles. ◆ Add the zucchini noodles to the same pan used for the turkey and sauté for 1 – 2 minutes over medium heat, until just tender. ◆ Season the zucchini noodles with salt and pepper. ◆ Transfer the noodles to a serving dish or bowl, leaving behind any liquid. Add the cooked pancetta and the Romano cheese. ◆ Toss with arugula, sprinkle with the figs and basil and a drizzle of olive oil. ◆ Add additional salt and pepper, to taste. ◆ Serve immediately.

Crazy Crazy Good!

Everyone has probably heard of David’s Stir Fry. Now if you haven’t, then you are probably new to the island or you haven’t been introduced to our little world of fine dining. That’s all right. We will walk you through Bahrain Confidential’s personal favourite. personal touch. When you see him, ask him for his personal favourites. They are worth the try! All right, now as much an important role as the ambience plays, our rumbling tummies still need some deliciousness. The thing that attracts customers to gourmet dishes is the exquisite aroma. It gets your mouth watering and with a beautiful display on your plate, it truly is enticing.

When we think David’s Stir Fry, we think three things: • Crazy Good, with their wide variety of fresh and bold flavours. • Crazy Hot, from Singapore, Cambodia to Malaysia and Vietnam, their delicious menu geographically covers quite a distance. • Crazy Fresh, this just speaks for itself, doesn’t it! Everything they make is 100 percent made from scratch daily. When you walk into the restaurant, the décor makes you feel very comfortable with a pleasant atmosphere. Mr. David, the owner of David’s Stir Fry visits every table, giving you a

If you look at the menu, you will notice that they divide it into interesting sections like Delectable Plate Teasers (It definitely teases that tummy of yours), Exotica, Small Bites Big Flavours (This is true. They have some of the most interesting combination of flavours, where just a mouthful burst with different flavours so eloquently put together), The Earthy Kind (For the meat eater in you), Feathered Kind (Just love the sound of that) Noble Treasures From The Seas, Vegetables & Tofu, Rice & Noodles and of course desserts. Each of the categories has a generous amount of options, all reasonably prices, thus tempting you to try them all! If we could influence your culinary experience at David’s Stir Fry in anyway, we would like to try. That is why we are about to tell you our favourite dishes. Bon appetite!

Chinese Chive Dumplings Fresh-grounded shrimps enhanced with distinctive flavours of Chinese Chives and a hint of garlic and spices enclosed in noodles pastry. Steamed to perfection.

Yaki Gyoza Crescent shaped dumplings filled with seasoned chicken and shrimp. Pan-fried to perfection.

Beef Tenderloin & Shrimp with Pineapple Served on skewers, this blend of Beef tenderloin, shrimp, pineapple and the portion of salad is lovely mixture of flavours and it’s new on the menu.

Scorpion Prawns Take our word for it. You will order another plate. Fresh prawns marinated with spice and herbs, panko coated and deep-fried. Served with the signature sauce and crispy potato shreds.

Roast Peking Duck This is considered to be the pinnacle of Chinese cooking. Prepared with lots of care, effort and time, the Roast Peking Duck has a fragrant crispy skin and herby meat that can be rolled into pancakes along with the tasty plum sauce spread, scallions and cucumbers.

Crazy Frog Legs Platter Yes, it’s exactly what you read. Frog Legs. A divine delicacy, if you haven’t tried frog legs before, this is definitely worth a try. Two entirely different textures and flavours.

lifestyle Bahrain Confidential March 2015

Last Word Horoscopes I think 2015 will be the year of good movies. And when I say ‘Good Movies’. Movies with intense, worthwhile something that communicate with you, or even ones that you would watch over and over again. Ok maybe that was too deep. All I’m saying is it’s been a while since we are jumping up and down for months, excited for the release of a movie.

ARIES: 21 March - 19 April

It’s probably safe to assume that we are off to a good start, right?! Come on, The Imitation Game, Mortdecai, Selma, American Sniper. These movies have done extremely well in the box offices and they are still going strong.

TAURUS: 20 April - 20 May

How about if I say that “This is only the beginning, the best is yet to come!” If the release dates of the following movies stick to what they are, then my friends, we are looking at weekends booked for movies. Brace Yourself! The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (Release Date: 1st May, 2015) Star Wars- Episode VII (Release date- 18th December 2015) Jurassic World (Release Date- 12th June, 2015) Terminator: Genisys (Release Date- 1st July, 2015) Chappie (Release Date- 6th March, 2015) Pitch Perfect 2 (Release Date- 15th May, 2015) Furious 7 (Release Date- 3rd April, 2015) Cindrella (Release Date- 13th March, 2015) Minions (Release Date- 10th July, 2015) Ted 2 (Release Date- 26th June, 2015) The Fantastic Four (Release Date- 7th August, 2015) The Revenant (Release Date- 25th December, 2015) Frankenstein (Release Date- 2nd October, 2015) And I only scrapped the iceberg!

A temporary separation from a love partner might have you in a gloomy mood. Find something else to do until they call back.

LIBRA: 22 September - 22 October

Have you been over exercising? Time for less the stressful yoga and tai chi! Don’t push yourself too much.

SCORPIO: 23 October - 22 November

You may be frantic about a responsibility but prioritise carefully and things will surely work out for the better.

Something you’ve almost achieved may slip out of your hands but don’t fret. A few more tasks are left to do before you meet success.

GEMINI: 21 May - 21 June

SAGITTARIUS: 23 November 21 December

You avoid politics but this month you may not. Assess the situation carefully before getting too involved.

A business or romantic partner might be in a foul mood and not tell you why. But it’s got nothing to do with you, stay calm.

CANCER: 22 June - 22 July

CAPRICORN: 22 December - 19 January

You’re making changes but you need to plan for more time. Stay rational and find other alternatives.

LEO:

23 July - 21 August

Are you involved in a search? What you need won’t be found in places you frequent. Look somewhere new!

VIRGO: 22 August - 21 September

Given up on a lost cause? You’re in for a surprise! Get up and look for it or you may lose it forever.

You may meet a new person who you will connect to instantly. Romance is also very likely. Take it slowly.

AQUARIUS: 20 January - 18 February

Is there a secret you’re obsessed with unveiling? You can find few clues without being too pushy with questions.

PISCES: 19 February - 20 March

Your belief systems have been changing but you may not notice it. Don’t be uncomfortable about this shift, everything changes.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
