It’s October and once again it’s time for us to come together in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Think Pink Bahrain has been working really hard and has lined up many interactive events for the sole purpose of educating people about Breast Cancer. We urge you to actively take part and spread awareness for a cause which impacts millions of women and men around the world. October is also when we start feeling the first bites of the chilly weather which will soon envelop our beautiful island and we say ‘bring it on’ after the long humid, hot summer many of us had to endure this year. For all of you who so love fashion, the month also sets the tone for the new Fall Winter Collection! Don’t miss our fashion special, as you will learn how to look sexy without showing a sliver of skin! Luxurious layering! We say! From bold splash of colours to sophisticated silhouettes, the new season promises to be super chic and stylish so it’s time to upgrade that wardrobe. Look at our picks and then Ready! Steady! Shop! There is something for everyone – so guys you’ve got no excuse to say ‘I’ve got nothing to wear!’ For all you car fanatics we’ve included a brief history on the BMW – who would’ve thought that the car has been around for over thirty five years now? It certainly has improved with time. All you boys who love their toys check out the accessories on the new Bentley. They sound so cool one wonders if it wouldn’t just be easier to move in and sell the house – well it’s worth a thought. Give it another season and we’re sure a swimming pool would’ve been added in the boot. For our closet chef’s, check out the Gastro section as it includes some really tasty recipes provided by some of the best chefs on the island. To those readers who would rather sit back and enjoy a tasty beverage as someone else cooks - as usual we have included all the best food promotions and all that’s hip and happening in Bahrain this month! Finally, MEN TAKE NOTE! All the girls in the office have been encouraging their other halves to set aside a huge chunk of their wages each month so they can buy some exotic jewellery for them – hey stop grumbling, “We’re worth it!” So we suggest to all our male readers that you do the same pronto as Jewellery Arabia is back and it’s a great way to keep your gal smiling! The glitter of the finest gems and the tick of luxury time pieces- Ah! If there was ever a lovelier sound – unless of course it’s the click, click, clicking of a pair of Jimmy Choo heels! As usual the issue is packed with enough to keep everyone entertained and informed, so there is really no need to stay at home, unless it’s to read Bahrain Confidential of course! Happy Reading!

Inside: The Latest Hair Loss Procedure Six Hours Of Pride

Many thanks to all of you who wrote in last month and apologies if your letter isn’t printed but we get so many. Keep us informed and keep us in check by sending comments to info@ArabianMagazines.com

Hello, my name is Sergio. I want to say that I like your magazine I always read it and enjoy looking for my friends in the social reviews. But I would like to say that I was really disappointed this month with the picture you used on the cover. I loved the Autumn idea of seeing the photo-shoot of the backstage Fashion campaign. But felt the quality of the image used Special wasn’t appropriate for a magazine cover. Anyway besides that, keep it up, each issue gets better!

C’est

Hi Sergio Many thanks and to be honest there’s not too much I can say back. Some people loved it, others like you didn’t. But I’ll let you into a secret – I took the pic and it was my first ever cover – so don’t pour water on my fire works! But point taken, we hope you approve of this issue?

I really like your home décor section and every time I read it, I want to redecorate my house. So why don’t you come to my home and give it a complete make-over like you do with the readers? I’m open for new ideas and happy to have all my furniture replaced including the kitchen? Shamilia

Hi Shamilia Jeee that’s really awfully decent of you. How can we refuse? So we hope you have somewhere else to stay for a few months. We’ve never done a home improvement makeover before so we may have a bit of an issue using the hammer and drill. Derrrrr if anyone’s house was going to be done – it would be mine first as I’ve always wanted to live in Barbie’s paradise! I’m really not impressed – I read your magazine every month and I submit my photo for the makeover every month too. Yet all I ever receive is a standard email thanking me but I’m stuck in a queue. Well HELLO unless that particular section has been removed from my copy for the last two issues – where are all these people who are ahead of me in the queue as you seem to have quit doing it? Have you run out of people because what about ME????

18 | Bahrain Confidential | October 2012

C’est

Dalia Hi Dalia I’m sure you had a great summer holiday? Well we’re kinda of doing the same! The makeover’s take up so much time and involve so much work that we thought we’d have a bit of a break. We will be re-introducing it shortly so a lucky reader will be looking ‘HOT’ for the party season in December. So send your details in and who knows you may get lucky or yet again maybe not. Hahahaha! Thank You Confidential – I laughed out loud last month when I saw Rebecca’s account on the ‘Ultimate Workout’. Did you see the expression of pain on her face yet she was barely lifting what looked like no more than 5kg? If she wants a proper workout – she should join me for a session at my gym … but not in that gym wear. Did she forget to remove her pajama’s? But credit to her at least she’s trying … Dan Mmmm Dan – why don’t you come and do a session with me first at Exfit and then we’ll see who has the last laugh.

We Love Winners!

Congratulations! The readers below have won last month’s competition in celebration of MINI’s 53rd Birthday. The prizes include a really cool branded duffle bag, a cooler and a fabulous Mini beach towel. Francis Cailles, Khulood Alsadah Basil Mohammad Yasin

Rihanna and Chris Brown Kiss Not Going Over Too Well with His Girlfriend

Rihanna and Chris Brown shocked quite a few people when they shared a brief kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards, but nobody was more surprised than Karruehce Tran, Brown’s girlfriend! The 23-year-old aspiring model was “totally pissed” when Chris Brown showed his appreciation for Rihanna winning “Video of the Year” with a kiss. “She felt the kiss was a public slap in the face,” a source told US Weekly.

John Mayer has been dragged into a lawsuit over a USD100 million Ponzi scheme -- and according to the docs, the singer might be in possession of as much as USD465,000 in dirty money. Here’s some background, a massive Ponzi scheme in Seattle came crumbling down earlier this year when its mastermind, a crook named Darren Berg, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for bilking investors out of more than USD100 million through his investment company. Now, the trustees charged with recovering the lost money are trying to track down where those millions went -- and are suing everyone they can along the way in order to recover it. According to new legal documents, one of the people who received dirty funds from Berg’s Ponzi scheme is John Mayer -- when a booking agency was allegedly paid by Berg’s company. It’s unclear why or what the connection is between the booking agency and Berg’s investment company!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Might Marry in the UK

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have hinted that they very well may get married in the UK. The pair have been notoriously secretive about their wedding plans – but Brad has revealed that Blightly could be a possible location for their nuptials. The couple and their brood have been staying in the UK for months, whilst Jolie has been filming her latest blockbuster, Maleficent. They’ve been residing in Richmond upon Thames during their time here and it seems that they may have fallen in love with the leafy trees and green pastures. When asked at the screening of his new film, Killing Them Softly, the 48-year-old hinted that the UK is a possibility on their list of locations.“We could do. It has been such an amazing summer here, with all your events – the Jubilee and the Olympics. I’ve watched everything”

Simon Cowell had to withdraw from filming auditions for the US X Factor when his lifestyle saw him change into a “weird vampire”. Stricken Simon had to be put on a strict detox regime to give him the strength to battle his “demons”. His doctor told him to remove all supplements and health aids from his life and quit smoking. Cowell, 52, was bedridden for a week, cutting himself off from friends, colleagues and even the demands of top TV executives. He is said to have confided in X Factor pal Louis Walsh: “I don’t want any more tablets and pills. I’m cutting out the lot, including cigarettes. “I desperately need peace. I’m craving normality.’’

Perrelet’s New Diamond Flower Collection - A Revolution In Ladies’ Watches

Perrelet as the inventor of the automatic movement* in 1777 is best known to watch connoisseurs the world over by its “mechanical prowess”. Perrelet has now created what can justly be called a new category of ladies’ watches by bringing together two previously distinct watch universes, i.e. that of Jewellery and that of Mechanical watchmaking. The raison d’être of jewellery has always been purely aesthetical. Perrelet’s new Diamond Flower Collection qualifies as first of its kind for this new category. The Diamond Flower shaped piece of jewellery set on the dial is not only an eye catcher but rotates with the motion of its wearer. This beautiful union is only made possible by using Perrelet’s exclusive Double Rotor calibre. Both perfectly synchronized rotors (one on the back and one the dial) provide ample power to store the motions of its wearer in the mainspring. The Diamond Flower Collection consists of a bouquet of 27 prêt-à-porter models with a choice, of steel, steel and rose gold (two-tone) and rose gold. Moreover, various diamond setting choices are perfectly combined with dial colours

ranging from “snow white” to pure anthracite, thereby passing by a rich dark chocolate and a very trendy blue. The Diamond Flower rotor is studded with diamonds and is, according to the models, accompanied by sparkling rubies or sapphires. True to its philosophy to make readable dials, Perrelet has positioned petals on the dial so as to serve as perfect indices. The Diamond Flower timepieces are available either with natural rubber or alligator leather straps which provide the perfect frame for the case measuring 38mm in diameter. For distinct female collectors and those who demand the pinnacle in exclusivity, seven unique pieces will be offered in the Rare Prestige Edition. These exceptional

models haute couture have additional, extravagant settings with the rarest and most precious emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. Extravagant items for the discerned few ... Diamond Flower The Diamond Flower Collection is new to the market and will be launched in Bahrain during Jewellery Arabia 2012.

Available from Asia Jewellers located in the Moda Mall and Al Ahli Mall. Price on request. 34 | Bahrain Confidential | October 2012

Letter From Bahrain

Identity Questions

“What is my identity? Where do I belong?” John Ridley asks some pertinent questions ... Where are you from?” It’s a question I’ve been asked countless times; a question used to break the ice in elevators, meeting rooms and social gatherings. The question is an occupational hazard, an invitation to enter conversation with a stranger as the elevator traverses the floors. Is the questioner really asking what country I am a citizen of, or is he asking “who are you?” For every one of us the question has no simple answer, our identities are determined by a complex array of cultural identifiers and lifelong influences. I was born and raised in a small sea side town in England, it seemed that there was nothing beyond the signs marking the edge of the town; as was normal during the sixties and seventies our family rarely left the town. School study of English history and geography was nationalistic, an English account of empire, war and industrial achievements. Beyond the borders of Great Britain (never the United Kingdom) “it” was foreign, “foreign” was where water was unsafe to drink and “they” flavoured their food with garlic. Rest assured, I was told. “Being British is better than being anything else, I should hold my nationality with pride.” At the time of the nationalist struggles of the Irish, Welsh and Scottish against the English I would have trouble identifying any common bonds between the nations that made up the United Kingdom or Britain, we were fighting each other over language, culture, ethnicity, descent and history. Those days may be behind us, but I’m still not sure

what “Britishness” is. As with most other nations, the myth of the “true-born Briton” lies at the core of our national identity, yet there was never any such thing. Wave after wave of people came to the land; the British (or almost any other nation) are not a race, but a hybrid, a melting pot of diverse races, creeds, colours and ethnicities. New arrivals have often been met by xenophobia, discrimination and sometimes violence through fear that some pure stock of white British blood was being diluted. Britain is not unique, almost every nation on earth has been through similar waves of immigration over time. Arabia has been the centre of international commerce and

John R Ridley

Today, those of us lucky enough not to be among the 15 million stateless people in the world, nationality and a sense of place are perhaps less important as people increasingly travel and migrate for political and economic reasons. Earlier this year, running counter to the suggestions that ethnic groups are unwilling or unable to integrate, the Institute for Social and Economic Research revealed that ethnic minorities living in Britain identify more strongly with “Britishness” than do their white counterparts, and Muslims are the most likely of the various groups to consider themselves British. The report also said that minority groups also associated quite strongly with their ethnicity— suggesting that people can manage dual identities. We see the same thing in Bahrain, one of the most culturally diverse nations on earth, where so many cultures can, and do, live side by side in peace; tolerant of each other. Expatriate residents of the country generally have a greater pride in their association with Bahrain than with their home nation. It is either naive or arrogant to constrain and exclude the enriching influences of immigrants who have become a part of an evolving national identity through economic activity, music, art, cuisine and thought. Bahrain’s identity is living and evolving; only by understanding our history can we even begin to contemplate our future as a nation; to deny this would be our own greatest loss, and an insult to the people who have contributed so much in so many ways to the country and become integral to it

“Many associate identity with nationality or citizenship, but personal and national identities are very different, a nation’s identity is dynamic and ever changing.” seafaring since the earliest days of trade, the Arab people have a proud heritage and culture; diversity and the welcoming of others has been part of Arab history and the way of life for thousands of years. Many associate identity with nationality or citizenship, but personal and national identities are very different, a nation’s identity is dynamic and ever changing. Personal identity is not the citizenship associated with a passport, for individuals identity is precious and rather fragile; there is a great desire among us all to understand our family and ancestry.

Nesfe- BrleadtBuefore Your Dead Wherein my art do hearts perceive, Of fear for what’s conceived? Concealed! Behind a veil where phantoms lurk, And apparitions dream. To seize! The thoughts which tangle as they irk, And visions of what feels deceived, Are images in eerie need, Of words of trust - Relieved! What grieves, For graven shades of pale? In bodies now anemic, frail, Their shadows grasp for what they know, Are lives of those who cannot glow, From inside tombs of darkness …… caught! By crypts of dreams and nightmares fraught, And nothings real cept sinews taut, In depths of earth where all is nought ……… and -Slow …… And vaults are now the shell you’ve found, As trapped you are beneath the ground, Reflecting all of what he’d tell, In shrouds of tales that cast their spell, On those who live despondence, once …. Through veins destined to drain, to ache, When dried to brittle sense of break. Until no longer mortal bait, Their emptied by his needy wait. And then he’ll sense depleted hate, Until consumes another’s fate, Someone’s life who’ll linger, sate His craving yearns for thirsts abate. And so in fleeting sights his greed, And need for blood ……. ……. To gush …….., Shall glimpse your life because you stood, Before his specter, you’ll be led, Attracted by his grace and dread, Toward a lifeless grave you’ll rush, And scream eternal fear unsaid, Within his spell, now cast undead, To dark and sculptured forms you’ve fled, Whose arms caress with charm, the harm, Ensures your bled, before your dead. Portal: Full Screen Browser

Portal bills itself as the ultimate full-screen browser, but you get other useful features such as MIME file downloading, a research mode and multiple user profiles, too. The latter would be better suited to the iPad than the iPhone. Usage is not the most comfortable as selecting options requires one to slide their thumb over a radial of icons-only the slim-fingered will be able to see what’s going on underneath. Each page navigation shows a full-screen ‘Connecting to …’ page before loading begins. Once pages have loaded, it’s indistinguishable from Safari, iOS’s native web browser. But the lack of a universal address bar, the niggly control interface and page loading screens make it seem slower. Is it value for money? Some features, such as file downloading and the research feature, which corrals pages on a prechosen subject, are useful. However, at around twice the price of Perfect Browser, you’ll need to be sure of the value of Portal’s extra features before buying!

Think Pink

Birds Of A Feather

Limited edition Pink Box for Think Pink Bahrain

– Annada In Support Of Think Pink Bahrain

Bahrain Confidential gets an exclusive interview with two remarkable women who have created a beautiful limited edition scarf in conjunction with Think Pink Bahrain for breast cancer awareness month. This month, Annada proudly launched its inaugural “Birds of a Feather, Flock Together” scarf in support of Think Pink Bahrain. Designed by Abbas Al Mousawi, the painting is from his private collection. Tell me about this scarf and its relevance to Think Pink? This scarf worked really well with Think Pink’s values. If you look out to the sky and a flock of birds flying together, you see that they are heading in one direction and they are unified and strong. It is the same for us women. We are strong and unified in the good times, in the unfortunate times and the amazing times. Nada and Noor Alawi

The scarf tells a story through its colours and brush strokes, the green signifies peace and serenity and the pink is to celebrate this amazing cause. You see the brush strokes and how they look like feathers, they are intertwined and just like these feathers form the wings for birds and allow the birds to soar, so can we as women show strength through numbers and show our support for this cause. For this limited edition scarf, you changed the scarf into a long one, why did you decide on that? With these scarves, we want to give the woman more options. Each scarf comes with a pack which shows the different ways in which to wear it. Because this is a long scarf, it can be worn as Hijab or whichever way the woman wants to wear it - based on what makes her happy. How do you make your scarves different from other brands? We love fashion, and we love art and with these scarves, we found a way to mould the two together, making wearable art. We only print a few of each scarf, so just like art, there is an exclusivity to the product. You

50 | Bahrain Confidential | October 2012

can be assured that what you are wearing is special. Also, we have incorporated scarf accessories to the line, which are detachable and this enables the woman to decide for herself when and how she wants to wear her scarf on a particular day. The accessories are made from semi-precious stones and are gold plated, which elevates the scarf to a new level of luxuriousness. What message would you give our readers for breast cancer awareness month? Breast cancer is not an easy thing to go through and in this difficult time, you should look for something that makes you happy, even if it is just a scarf that will make you feel beautiful. Just by wearing the scarf, you will spread awareness and show that you support other women and this great cause 25 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of this scarf will go towards Think Pink Bahrain’s education fund. Scarves are BD60 and are available through the order hotline. Free delivery in Bahrain. For more information visit www.annadaonline.com, Tel. +973 3337 4004 or email: info@annada.com

Effortless Hair Extensions

Effortless Hair Extensions provides a quick and easy way to inject body and fullness into your hair. They require no glue, clips, grips or a weave which will or could damage your hair. It’s so easy that suppliers are confident that any woman who purchases these extensions will be walking out the house within minutes of opening the box – with thicker, healthier longer looking hair. Yet they are so natural looking no-one needs to know that it’s not your own hair. They come in five different styles, 21 colours and two lengths – 16 and 24 inch. The all new fragrance by Victoria’s Secret is now available in stores! Slip into something iconic. The Body by Victoria fragrance was created with one thing in mind: amazing skin. Body by Victoria is inspired by the rush of femininity. Bursting with lush florals and earthy musk, Body by Victoria radiates with warmth and confidence.

If pores and fine lines are an issue, look no further than Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer, a revolutionary face primer that softens skin and diffuses light to help minimize imperfections. The Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener reduces the appearances of lines and creases on lids and under eyes while brightening the entire eye area – a beauty must.

 Prep your eyes with concealer. Apply three dots of concealer under each eye to cover dark circles. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat, never rub.  Apply eye base to your lid. Eye base keeps your shadow in place for hours. Without it, your eyeshadow will likely end up a greasy line.  Follow with Queen Attitude Kohl Kajal. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger. You don’t want a prominent line. For a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eyeshadow along the upper lid and below the lid. You don’t want a stark line, instead you want to blend it so it’s “smudge-y.”  Apply eyeshadow. Use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well. Brighten your eyes with a highlighter. Putting a bit of your lightest eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly and make it “pop”.  Apply Queen Attitude Mascara. Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps. Apply to bottom lashes as well. Available from Faces.

Pamper Your Senses At

Hani Royal Spa Hani Royal Spa in Seef is the perfect destination for indulgence! Our team member Pooja Rajpal Kasala provides an account of her recent visit to the spa.

N

estled in the peaceful environment and exquisite surroundings of Hani suites, is the Hani Royal Spa, a unique Moroccan inspired calming haven and oasis of relaxation. Once inside, I was enveloped by a serene environment that was beautifully scented with fragrances of jasmine and orange blossoms hinting at what’s to come. The staff, at the glorious indigo-blue colored reception desk were friendly and offered a complimentary fresh fruit juice while I browsed through the elaborate menu. I was introduced to the spa guide who answered all my queries. I was then taken towards the spa. The pathway to the spa was lit with candles and had little streams of water filled

with pebbles and floating lilies. There were a myriad luxurious and time tested treatments and rituals that I could choose from! There was the Turkish bath, the authentic Moroccan bath or the Hammam with delicious scented scrubs, the mineral rich ghassonel or cryotherapy. There were also a variety of therapeutic massages such as the Thai, Shiatsu, Tonic or the Shirogriva massage. I opted for a relaxing jaccuzi and decided to follow it up with the Moroccan bath and a Thai massage. What followed was two hours of complete bliss! The private Jacuzzi, keeping in line with the blue theme was done in blue tiles. I was thrilled to know

Hani Royal Spa reception area

Those fortunate few (now I can add my name to that list!) received delicate skin treatments, exotic body wraps often based on ancient family recipes, passed on from one generation to another! After the Hammam and one more session in the jacuzzi and sauna, I was prepped for the final rejuvenation, the body massage. The half hour session by the therapist took away all the remaining knots in my body and I was absolutely refreshed. I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of a spa as relaxed as I was after the two-hour treatment. I felt noticeably lighter, my skin was tingling and my mind was clearer. Bliss! If there is one gift we can give ourselves it is the gift of relaxation and total indulgence and there is no better place than the luxurious Hani Royal Spa for it! The package which included Jacuzzi, Moroccan bath with scrub and half hour massage costs BD30

Bahrain Confidential chats with Dr Pierre R Clero, French plastic surgeon as he talks about his new wellness book and specialty.

D

r Pierre R Clero is a French plastic surgeon of more than thirty years. He is also the CEO of Seagull Wellness International and President of The International Board of Regenerative Medicine and Bio-cosmetic Surgery, as well as author of the best seller “Stop the Clock” a “winning strategy to a longer life and healthier body”. Dr Pierre can you tell our readers about your book and why you wrote it? I’ve been a plastic surgeon for more than thirty years practicing all over the world, and I enjoy it very much. It is always a new pleasure to achieve artistic natural results of a procedure and to see a patient’s happiness after; to witness their new self confidence. Our practice teaches us that the quality of our skin and the way we look is a reflection of how healthy or unfortunately how sick we are, and how detrimental our lifestyle is. I truly believe that beauty is the result of a great “plastic” associated with a healthy body, it is perfectly defined in one word, ‘wellness’. I will make a very simple mechanical

“… the quality of our skin and the way we look is a reflection of how healthy or unfortunately how sick we are, and how detrimental our lifestyle is …” comparison – for example, what is the point to have a beautiful shiny Ferrari if the engine inside doesn’t work properly nor delivers the expected power? It is great to have a beautiful, vintage Ferrari 250 GTO, roaring and fiercely firing all 12 cylinders. That is what my book and my practice are about, making my patients look their best as well as firing all cylinders – Stay Younger Longer. Dr Pierre how do you apply your “magic”? Actually, I do not like the word “magic” because all our treatments and programs are scientific and evidence based. There is no esotericism or magic there, it is only breakthrough science. We are lucky enough to live at a time when new technologies and medical science allows us to provide our patients with new treatments that rejuvenate their body. Here I think about one of my preferred techniques, the Stem-cell PRP, a procedure that rejuvenates the face by harnessing the power of our own stem-cell. It rejuvenates the face without the need for invasive procedure. Hollywood movie stars are using

the procedure on a regular basis to maintain a young and healthy look. Do not ask for names, as I’ve made it a rule for myself and the staff to respect the confidentiality of our patients 100 per cent. A few years ago, I cornered the term “BioCosmetic Surgery” to illustrate the fantastic progress that scientific knowledge of stem cell brings to our specialty. Now, we not only make you ‘look younger’ but really become ‘physically younger’ too; we can rejuvenate your tissues, your skin and the function of your organs at a deep, cellular level. We know how the skin works and are able to make the best of it for our patients’ benefits. What procedures do you perform? Being a plastic surgeon for more than thirty years means I have huge experience and thousands of procedures carried out globally, from the West to Far East and now the Middle East. I perform all sorts of procedures within the field of cosmetic surgery; Botox, Fraxel, lifting, liposuction, breast implants, breast reduction, and hair grafting Bestseller ‘Stop the Clock with Clero Clinic Plan’ is available for purchase at Dr Pierre Clero’s clinic located in Bahrain Specialist Hospital. Bright Light Therapy Improves Cognitive Performance and Mood for Healthy People

We already know that bright light therapy can be an effective cure for seasonal depression, but a new study from Finnish University students has revealed that it also benefits those not struggling from seasonal depression at all. When the therapy is administered through the ear canal directly to the photosensitive brain tissue, it not only improves the cognitive performance and mood of those with the depression, but those without it as well. According to the study, which was published at the Scandinavian Physiological Society’s science conference in Helsinki, bright light administered through the ear canal improved the cognitive speed of students. The study was conducted with 41 students (average age of 24) at the Technology School of the Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. Half of the students received a daily twelve minute bright light treatment through the ear canal for three weeks. Experts observed how long it took participants to correctly recognise quickly flashing computergenerated random characters on a computer screen. The subjects that received transcranial bright light treatment improved their reaction time by 25-30 per cent, compared to performance before the treatment and compared to a control group.

Health Coconut Oil may Prevent Tooth Decay

Chocolate may Lower Men’s Stroke Risk

Men may be able to reduce their risk of having a stroke by about one-sixth, simply by eating one chocolate bar per week. That’s the appetizing conclusion of a large new study from Sweden, the first in a long line of recent studies on the potential heart and vascular benefits of chocolate, specifically on men. Researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute followed more than 37,000 men between the ages of 45 and 79 for ten years. Compared to those who ate little or no chocolate, men who ate the most (about 2.2 ounces per week) had a 17 per cent lower risk of having a stroke during that time span. To bolster these findings, the researchers pooled their data with that from four previous studies, including a near-identical 2011 study they conducted in women. A re-analysis of the combined data produced similar results: Men and women who ate the most chocolate had a 19 per cent lower risk of stroke, compared to those who ate the least.

Electronic Cigarettes Harm the Lungs

Electronic cigarettes, seen by many as a healthy alternative to tobacco smoking, do cause damage to the lungs, scientists from the University of Athens, Greece, explain. Professor Christina Gratziou and her team set out to determine what the shortterm effects of smoking with e-cigarettes might be on different individuals, including those with no known health problems, as well as existing smokers with and without lung conditions. They experimented on 32 volunteers; of whom eight were lifetime non-smokers and 24 were current regular smokers. Some of them had healthy lungs, while others lived with asthma or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). They were asked to use an electronic cigarette for ten minutes, inhaling the vapours into their

Coconut oil, a natural antibiotic when digested, destroys the bacteria that cause tooth decay, say researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland. Although natural, undigested coconut oil appeared to have no impact, the scientists found that the digested oil stopped most Streptococcus bacteria from multiplying. Of particular interest was Streptococcus mutans, a type of bacterium which produces teethdecaying acids. The scientists are working on finding out whether digested coconut oil might combat other pathogens too, including some types of bacteria and yeasts. They believe that enzyme-modified coconut oil, i.e. in its semi-digested state, may have commercially viable antimicrobial qualities for the oral healthcare industry.

Elmo, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob and Other Cartoons Help Sell Snacks, Healthy or Unhealthy! For youngsters who turn up their noses at fruits and vegetables, slapping a cartoon face on a healthy snack could make those choices more appealing, a new study suggests. Researchers found that when elementary school students were offered apples and cookies with lunch, kids were more likely to opt for an apple when it was branded with an Elmo sticker. Parents and school administrators could take a lesson from food companies marketing cookies and candies through this format and introduce nutritious and healthier food using kid friendly characters!

lungs. A spirometry test, as well as some others diagnostic procedures were used to measure their airway resistance. They found that using an e-cigarette caused an instant increase in airway resistance that lasted for ten minutes in the majority of the participants. The study indicated that, non-smokers - even among lifetimes non-smokers, using an e-cigarette for ten minutes raised their airway resistance to 206 per cent from 182 per cent (mean average). Among the current regular smokers and the existing regular smokers, the spirometry tests revealed a significant rise in airway resistance to 220 per cent from 176 per cent after using one e-cigarette for ten minutes. Though, COPD and Asthma patients experienced no significant increase in airway resistance from using one e-cigarette for ten minutes.

Noise from Earphones can Damage Ears

Athough many people like to turn their headphones up as loud as they can after having a bad day or to get their mind off things bothering them, experts from the University of Leicester have shown evidence for the first time that turning the volume on your headphones up too high can damage the coating of nerve cells, eventually causing temporary deafness. According to the researchers, the noise levels similar to those of jet levels can be heard on earphones or headphones on personal music players if they are turned up loud enough. Scientists have known that temporary deafness and tinnitus (a condition that presents itself as a noise such as ringing or buzzing in the ears) can be caused by noises louder than 110 decibels. This study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to examine how those noises cause underlying cell damage. The myelin sheath is a coating found on nerve cells that carry electrical signals from the ears to the brain, which helps the electrical signals travel along the cell. The cells become stripped of this coating with exposure to loud noises (noise over 100 decibels), which stops the electrical signals and no longer allows information to be successfully transmitted from the ears to the brain. Fortunately, full hearing can return when the coating surrounding the nerve cells reform and allows the cells to function normally again. This means that hearing loss is sometimes only temporary.

Sweet Surrender

Kelly Armatage

This month Kelly Armatage, our resident Counsellor, Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist explains how surrendering negative thoughts allows situations to turnaround ...

I

s there a situation in your life that drives you crazy? Maybe this ‘negative’ condition has been in your life for months, or even years on end! Does the situation cause you stress, unhappiness and resentment? Did you know that the way you are thinking about this state of affairs is actually creating the results in your reality? Let’s consider a situation in your life that is causing you the distress. Have you analysed the thoughts towards the issue? The first question to ask yourself is; “are my thoughts about this subject positive or negative?” If the answer is that the thoughts surrounding the situation are fearful or resentful or negative, then this is where the problem lies. Not in the situation itself, but in the thoughts you are holding towards it. We know scientifically that there is no effect without a cause, therefore we can say that there is no outcome without a preceeding thought to that result. If our thoughts towards a situation are negative, then we are causing the undesired to manifest and to actually continue or worsen in a harmful fashion. The best way of actually achieving that which you desire is in surrendering the situation completely. Many will say; “well that is just giving up and losing out on what is important”. Yet is that true? Are we surrendering the desired result; no! We are surrendering the undesired result that is creating the current circumstances. To surrender and to let go is to give up

88 | Bahrain Confidential | October 2012

the struggle. To surrender and to let go is to face the fear surrounding the situation. By letting go of our need/want of something to be a certain way, we acquire happiness. Happiness is not from situations, people or events being a particular way. Happiness comes from being at peace with everything

“Happiness comes not from the acquisition of something or someone. It comes from being in acceptance and gratitude for the current moment.”

externally, i.e. happiness comes internally. There are several mantras or affirmations one can state, in order to help them surrender negative situations. These are:  I let go of my need for things to be my way and choose peace  I expect the very best out of my life and choose happiness en route  What I desire is on its way, yet I feel contentment anyway  I surrender the fears surrounding this situation and go free to be harmonious

As per these positive expressions, one might notice that happiness comes not from the acquisition of something or someone. It comes from being in acceptance and gratitude for the current moment, with the knowledge that only good is coming along. Our desires can be achieved, yet it is through the letting go of any negative thoughts and fears surrounding them. Our desires can be achieved by getting happy in this moment right now without the addition of something/ someone to make us feel complete. Our desires can be achieved by knowing that they are on the way, through harnessing faith and not fear. The key is that prior to the obtainment of that which is desired, there will definitely be feelings of harmony, contentment and relief. Through letting go of the negative, through casting away the fear, through releasing the burden; we allow ourselves to feel a freedom and peace like no other. For the achievement of serenity, just what in your life is in need of a sweet surrender? Kelly Armatage Inc - Offering Counselling, Life Coaching and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Sessions. Impact Of Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic has its advantages but it poses a dangerous threat to our environment. This month Rehan Ahmed talks about how plastics create pollution, harm our ecosystems and produce tonnes of carbon dioxide.

P

lastic is no doubt one of the most wonderful inventions of modern times and is integrated into every aspect of our daily lives. It has many advantages but also has many environmental impacts. Plastic water bottles are a common feature in our urban daily life. Bottled water is considered to be convenient and safer than tap water. However, bottled water can cost up to 10,000 times more per gallon than tap water. A person on average drinks around two litres of water a day and hence may use between four to six plastic bottles per day. We need to understand that plastic is made from petroleum, in fact, 24 million gallons of oil is needed to produce a billion

plastic bottles. Plastic takes around 700 years to be degraded and 80 per cent of plastic bottles are not recycled, so 38 million plastic bottles go to landfill sites per year in USA alone. Recycling one tonne of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space. The incineration of plastic on the other hand generates hazardous gases and toxic byproducts, such as chlorine gas and ash containing heavy metals, which are released into the atmosphere and affect public health. Plastic bottles are among the most prevalent source of pollution found on our beaches. Ten per cent of the plastic produced every year worldwide ends up in the ocean out of which 70 per cent finds its way to the ocean floor, where it will likely never degrade. A recent UN study estimated that every square mile of the ocean has around 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it.

“Ten per cent of the plastic produced every year worldwide ends up in the ocean out of which 70 per cent finds its way to the ocean floor where it will likely never degrade. 90 | Bahrain Confidential | October 2012

Eng. Rehan Ahmed

Manufacturing, transportation, distribution, collection and disposal of water bottles creates enormous pollution in terms of trash generation, global warming and releases tonnes of carbon dioxide. Plastic bottles pose a health risk as plastic trash absorbs organic pollutants like Bisphenol A (BPA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Studies have shown that chemicals called phthalates, which are known to disrupt hormones can leach into bottled water over time. This can cause health problems such as reproductive issues and cancer. The solution to the issue of plastic bottles lies in embracing a cultural shift away from the use-and-toss mentality. Recycling of plastic is required as the amount of energy that is saved when producing new plastic products from recycled materials instead of raw (virgin) materials is around 67 per cent. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Recycled plastic can be used in the production of products such as fleece clothing, carpeting, decking, playground equipment and new containers and bottles. The energy conserved from recycling a single plastic bottle can light a 60-watt light bulb for six hours. The solution to the overuse of plastic bottles lies in minimum use and safe disposal. A good alternative to disposable plastic bottles is the use of a flask, thermos or reusable bottle which can be refilled as required

It represents thorough attention to design and includes many features that increase the joy of playing a piano. RGE defines the expressive capability of Clavinova. Troon Continues to Make its Mark in the Middle East with the Signing of Royal Golf Club, Bahrain

Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management and development has underlined its growing impact on golf in the Middle East after being selected as the management team at the Royal Golf Club, Bahrain’s first and only golf destination. Although originally opened in 1999, the course was expertly re-designed by golf legend and 8-time European Tour Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie, in association with European Golf Design. The par-72 championship course and its extensive clubhouse facilities were then re-opened in 2009 to rich acclaim from both the world’s media and its leading players. Its rapid development was immediately recognised by the European Tour just one year later when the venue was selected as host course of the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions tournament won by England’s Paul Casey.

Pets

Home!

If only animals could talk, you’d be hearing their sad, pitiful stories. But since they can’t, we are giving these adorable creatures a voice. One way or another, they have been hurt and abused in ways you would not imagine a human doing to another creature, and yet the fact remains that these animals end up abandoned and left for dead all over the Kingdom. If you’re thinking of buying a pet, please don’t - instead, adopt one today.

Kia Launches All - New Quoris Flagship Sedan As a large vehicle, Quoris boasts a long wheelbase, the engine sits further back, the A-pillar is also pushed back to create a longer hood and an impressive short front overhang. Consequently, the distance between the center of the front wheel and the A-pillar, the so called ‘prestige distance’, is increased. With a 5,090 mm overall length and 3,045 mm wheelbase, Quoris offers generous interior space. Overall width and height are 1,900 mm and 1,490 mm, respectively, which creates a spacious cabin environment, while efficient aerodynamics and close attention to exterior detailing result in a highly competitive drag coefficient of Cd 0.27. The normally aspirated twin DOHC 3.8-liter engine is equipped with dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and a variable intake system

(VIS). Quoris is fitted with Kia’s first radar-based Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC). This system continuously monitors traffic conditions and speed in order to maintain a pre-determined safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Detecting the risk of a collision, AVSM warns the driver via a loud audible alarm, and a visual warning on both the Head Up Display (HUD) and TFT LCD cluster. If a collision is imminent, the AVSM automatically applies the brakes to reduce the impact speed and retracts the seatbelts and hold occupants closer to their seats, ensuring maximum occupant protection. Infiniti FX Vettel Edition The World’s Most Exclusive Crossover

Infiniti and Sebastian Vettel have together created the most unique and focused performance car on the market.

T

he Infiniti FX Vettel Edition is a one-of-akind – a project which is unlikely to be repeated. It has been borne from a close collaboration between the reigning Formula One champion and one of the world’s finest car designers, Infiniti’s Shiro Nakamura, and goes on sale a little over a year since the concept was conceived. It’s another inspired performance by Sebastian Vettel and Infiniti, and provides customers with the opportunity to directly benefit from Infiniti’s association with Formula One. Just 50 units of the world’s most exclusive crossover, will be made available across the region. Featuring a 420bhp V8-engine, dry carbon-fibre aerodynamic package, unique 21” BBS alloy wheels and a bespoke interior to Vettel’s own specification-competition to be one of the select few owners of the one-of-a-kind FX Vettel Edition is tough. The FX Vettel Edition will be one of 2013’s most focused performance cars, with the production cars being virtually identical to the concept version. Featuring

an aerodynamics package developed in collaboration with Red Bull Racing, the FX Vettel Edition can claim both sleeker aerodynamics (drag is reduced by 5 per cent) and, thanks to the rear spoiler, an additional 30 per cent downforce. Other numbers confirmed by Infiniti include an upgrade of the 5.0-litre V8 to 420HP with torque of 53 kg-m (520 Nm), making it the most powerful Infiniti ever sold in the Middle East. It will sound as good as it goes thanks to a special exhaust system. Carbon-fibre parts enhance the package further, while the increased downforce and lowered, stiffer suspension ensure handling and stability are exactly what the World Champion ordered. The FX Vettel Edition has a manufacturer suggested retail price of USD136,000 in GCC countries, with first deliveries across the Middle East to begin in early 2013

“This is the first road car I have helped develop. Usually I have hundreds of engineers building one car just for me. So it is fantastic for me to contribute to the design of a car.” Sebastian Vettel

A Brief History Of The

BMW 3

The BMW 3 Series blends BMW’s style, invention, and exceptional talent and marks its signature as one of the world’s best selling premium car.

BMW engine

D

uring the course of more than three and a half decades, the BMW 3 Series, has consistently evolved. Designers have always managed to incorporate dynamics, innovation and aesthetics into a harmonious, modern and futuristic concept, while preserving traditional values. As a result, each BMW 3 Series has retained its unmistakable brand identity and can be identified as a BMW at first glance. However, the roots of the BMW 3 Series go back as far as the 1960s. With the arrival of the BMW 1600 in 1966, the 2-door 02 Series, which produced such famous models as the 1600ti or the 2002ti, was launched on to the automotive market and eventually replaced by the BMW 3 Series. 1975–1983. The design of the first BMW 3 Series is characterised by large windows, a distinctive wedge shape and, of course, BMW’s brand-typical face, the front end being dominated by the kidney grille vividly protruding from the radiator cover to continue up slightly, scoop-shaped, along the bonnet to the windscreen. Cars

BMW 1600-1636

1982–1993. The now low-slung front end boasting the flat BMW kidney grille elongates the entire front end of the vehicle, particularly as the double headlights now featured on all 3 Series models are located far on the outside. The smooth transition into all adjoining body surfaces not only determines the characteristic shape, but also ensures a good air flow around the vehicle. 1990–1997. The time had apparently come to replace the original BMW 3 Series with an exceedingly elegant successor model. It is an entirely newly conceived sports sedan, the dimensions of which have increased all round. Besides the slim silhouette, the smooth front end of the new model is immediately evident, as the double headlights are now conjointly mounted behind a glass cover. In addition to dynamic lines and a distinctive wedge shape, a significantly lower bonnet and a raised rear end, technical refinements such as windows installed flush with the car body and targeted diffuser cooling air circulation inside the engine compartment also contribute towards the outstanding drag coefficient of 0.29 (316i). This BMW has therefore virtually nothing in common with its predecessor, but the family resemblance still remains recognisable.

2005–2011. With the launch of the fifth generation in the year 2005, the BMW 3 Series is strong in character and exudes significantly more presence and power than its predecessor. The new styling strategy and the progressive design vocabulary gain the highest level of recognition, resulting in the BMW 3 Series being presented with the “World Car of the Year” award in New York. With the double kidney grille and dual headlights curved at the top, it exhibits the typical front end of a modern BMW – a focused facial expression. 2012. The 6th generation BMW 3 Series interprets the classic design features of the BMW 3 Series model of the 1960s with a new lease on life. The new powerful design elements include a new BMW face, with flat headlights reaching along as far as the BMW kidney grille. This emphasises the elegantly dynamic design of the new BMW

3 Series, which has increased in length (+93mm), width (front +37mm, rear +47mm) and wheelbase (+50mm) compared to the predecessor model, giving the car an elegant and athletic silhouette. A choice of three powerful engines are available: the 335i 6-cylinder, the 328i and the 320i 4-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This model is the first BMW to be available with three different line options: Modern, Sport and Luxury – three distinctive design personalities for the exterior and interior, enabling customers to choose among a number of exclusive finishes and equipment variants to suit their taste. Although more than 37 years lie between the first generation of 1975 and the current BMW 3 Series, both front ends attest to an unmistakable brand identity and in spite of the great difference in age, are both immediately recognisable as members of the same family

BMW 3 1985

1998–2005. When the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series is launched in May 1998, the compact sports sedan is some 40 mm wider and even the track width increased by 60 mm compared with its predecessor. The double kidney grille is integrated into the bonnet and, together with the dual round headlights located behind clear glass covers, again shapes the powerful character of the new BMW 3 Series’ face. Gastro ini Head ra h a B w e n e th Chef Jaffar, Chef at Waves Restaurant, Crowne Plaza talks to Bahrain Confidential about his interest in food, gives us cooking tips and shares his speciality recipe, Laksa!

Seafood Galore At Waves!

Tell us about yourself and Waves Restaurant. I am the Head Chef at Waves Restaurant, Crowne Plaza and handle the Arabic, South East Asian and Lebanese sea food cuisine. We have recently refreshed our menu with a lot more exotic recipes. Our style of serving and preparation is more modernistic and stylish now. For example we serve Amuse-bouche, which is a greeting from the Chef, to all our guests. Ours is a purely sea food restaurant. Our seafood is market fresh and is displayed for our guests who can then choose the fish they want to eat. We also make customized side dishes such as Seafood fried rice, Sayadyeh rice which is braised hammour with herbs served with cumin rice, fried onions and pine nuts or even Samkeh Harra, a fried hammour filet, served with chili tomato sauce. We have different types of sauces which are our in house secret! At Waves, we also provide an extensive A’la carte menu, which comprises of international salads, soups, main dishes and mouthwatering desserts like the Crème

Crowne Plaza Head Chef Jaffar

Brulee and Tiramisu. Apart from these we have “Quick lunch”, a three course menu targeted at working professionals. This specially designed menu is healthy, tasty and reasonably priced and served in within 45 minutes! Did you do any special course in food? Or is this a natural talent? From a very young age I enjoyed cooking along with my mom. I used to really like the way she cooked machbous fish! When I grew up, I realized I wanted to be a professional chef so I did hotel management in Bahrain, I also did many short cooking courses in Kuwait as well as at the Thai embassy. Crowne Plaza also helps us update our skills. Furthermore training under Chef Saravanan Gurusamy, our Executive Chef from Malaysia has helped me hone my skills in international cuisine. What sets Waves apart from other sea food restaurants? We serve star quality food and are famous for the freshness of the fish we serve. Apart from that, the chefs in our team meet all the customers and help them select the right food. We also keep introducing different themes like crab festival and will have a sizzling seafood theme this month. What is your favourite sea food dish at Waves? Ah! Its, Sayadyeh rice with grilled fish. I quite enjoy the Thai combo, which is a selection of fresh seafood, vegetables, and coriander in mild to spicy Thai green or red curry, served with steaming rice! What are some of the differences in cooking sea food in comparison to other meats? Do give us some tips. Seafood is all about the flavour of the fish, its freshness and the cooking technique, it’s an art form! For example you don’t serve brown sauce with white fish! A brown sauce or peanut sauce will ruin its flavor. Or let’s say, a red snapper which has an intense flavor and a deep colour is best for deep frying or wok frying and goes well with stronger flavor sauces such as sweet and sour or spicy sauces. What variety of fish is Bahrain most famous for? What kind of food do people in Bahrain prefer, in sea food? Bahrain is famous for Hammour, Sobaity, Faskar and Andak. People in Bahrain enjoy baby lobsters (cigale), they also like crabs and our local fish.

Give us a quick healthy recipe that we can make at home? Quick recipe - Take a pinch of white pepper and salt, olive oil and fresh lemon. Marinate the filet, grill it and you are ready to eat! Another tip for our readers? Aways use fresh ingredients be it ginger, cumin or coriander powder. It’s tastier and healthier

Chef Jaffar shares his signature recipe The Malaysian Laksa! Malaysian Laksa Laksa Paste

Ingredients: 400 g Red onion 100 g Red chili 100 g Dry chili 70 g Fresh ginger 100 g Fresh lemon grass 100 g Fresh galangal 100 g Peeled garlic 500 g Coconut milk powder 3 liter Water Salt to taste 200 g Dry shrimps Cooking oil Condiments: White thin noodles Bean sprouts Peeled shrimps Tofu Boiled egg Fresh coriander Fresh mint leaf Directions for making Laksa paste: 1. Using a food processor add all ingredients except dry shrimps and then blend until it is a smooth paste. Set aside. 2. Blend dry shrimps separately. Set aside. 3. To make the ‘Laksa Broth’ add cooking oil in the pot, the blended paste and sauté on a slow fire until cooked and make sure it does not burn to avoid bitterness. 4. Add blended dry shrimps. Simmer together. 5. Add water and coconut powder dissolved in water and chicken powder. Bring to boil. Condiments: Fill a medium pot half way with water and bring to boil, add laksa noodle or glass noodle for a few minutes until they become soft then remove in individual bowls. Add in rest of the condiments into individual bowls. Pour in scoop of laksa broth and serve. Top with garnish and enjoy!

Things to know Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Al Dana Nursery Tel. 1725 3541 Dana Pre-school, Riffa Tel. 1777 0180 Lilliput, Budaiya Tel. 1769 4947

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.

News Bites eBay Bans Spells and Potions

Budding warlocks and sorcerers will have to go elsewhere for their magical supplies. Ebay is banning the sale of “metaphysical goods” such as potions and spells. The Wall Street Journal reports the online shopping and auction giant will stop selling the items, which make up a good chunk of its inventory. The company has allowed the sales since 1995 and had tens of thousands of listings in the category. The company said the metaphysical goods category is more trouble than its worth. Shoppers complain to customer services after they buy spells that fail to bring them wealth, or potions that failed to transform them into magical creatures.

Missing Woman Unwittingly Joins Search Party for Herself

A group of tourists spent hours looking for a missing woman near Iceland’s Eldgja canyon, only to find her among the search party. The group was travelling through Iceland on a tour bus and stopped near the volcanic canyon in the southern highlands, reports the Icelandic news organization mbl.is. One of the women on the bus left to change her clothes and freshen up. When she came back, her bus mates didn’t recognize her. Soon, there was word of a missing passenger. The woman didn’t recognize the description of herself, and joined in the search. About 50 people searched the terrain by vehicles and on foot. The coast guard was even readying a helicopter to help. But the search was called off eventually, when it became clear the missing woman was, in fact, accounted for and searching for herself.

Man Fakes Death Before Proposing

A Russian man faked his own death before proposing to his girlfriend, who inexplicably said yes. Alexey Byko, 30, hired a full movie crew of stuntmen, makeup artists and actors to stage a horrific car crash. “We’d arranged to meet at a certain place but when I arrived there were mangled cars everywhere, ambulances, smoke and carnage,” Irena Kolokov told the UK Sun. “Then when I saw Alexey covered in blood lying in the road, a paramedic told me he was dead and I just broke down in tears. “Then, the blood-soaked prankster stood up and proposed. “I was so cross I almost killed him again, but for real this time,” she said. But rather than murder him, she said yes, and they married!

Artist to Bottle Sweat as Perfume An American artist working in Sweden plans on collecting the sweat of Swedish glass-blowers and selling it to tourists as perfume. Daniel Peltz, a conceptual artist from New York who is currently in residence at the Rejmyre Art LAB in eastern Sweden, hopes tourists who buy Swedish glass will also spend some of their money on his perfume. “The glass-blower’s sweat and work is something that tourists appreciate when they come here and look. So for me there isn’t such a huge difference in selling the glassblower’s sweat and the finished glass,” Peltz is working with glassblowers, who said they were happy to help out with the project.

A family owned pub in Scotland has come under fire for its famous deep-fried Mars bars, which the chocolate-covered nougat-maker says is “not in line” with the company’s policy of promoting a “healthy active lifestyle. “The deep-fried Mars bar is a menu staple at the Stonehaven fish and chip shop in Aberdeenshire, which claims to have invented the dish. The letter came after newspapers reported the Watsons were considering applying for secured status for their invention under the European Union’s Protected Food Name Scheme. They soon dismissed the idea because of all the complicated paperwork and legal processes involved.

Horoscopes “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” - Aristotle Libra 22 September

- 22 October Libras are raring to go go go this October but be careful of burning out before the party gets going, going, gone. Friendships may be strained through the 4th when your party hearty proclivities upset pals’ plans. Before the 21st, you realise that the dreamboat who cruised into your port may be a destroyer.

Scorpio 23 October

- 22 November It’s difficult to climb the corporate ladder when you have family ties that tightly bind. The chains loosen after the 4th but then Scorps are faced with intimacy issues with retro Saturn. If it’s not one thing it’s another; Maybe all you need is a little quiet time away from all the stuffed turkeys and baked hams.

Sagittarius 23 November -

21 December Expect to deal with the ying yang of relationships throughout October, courtesy of retro Saturn. How much of yourself are you prepared to give up to form a partnership, Archer? Mergers and acquisitions take place towards the end of the month, possibly resulting in a change of personal taste.

Capricorn 22 December

- 19 January Feeling lost? Caps are forced to adjust their personal compasses this October when even minor tremors on the job reverberate on the Richter scale. Reestablish your personal magnetism as lucky Jupiter heightens your personal allure but be prepared to overturn some established life tenets as Uranus retrogrades. A new broom sweeps clean or at least pushes the dust around.

Aquarius 20 January

- 18 February Check out the progress of your career before the 23rd when the Sun sets in Scorpio. Are you headed in the right direction? If not, set a new course when Venus redirects on the 21st. Aquarians may experience an “expansion” this October thanks to retrograde Uranus. Volcanic changes occur especially in how you appear to others.

Pisces 19 February

- 20 March Pisces start September off with a Uranian bang and the month becomes almost uncontrollable from there. As much as you may try to rein events in, the planets prove to be surprising, devious and a bit mischievous. Why ask why, friend? Swim through the Neptunian funk and fog and apply all that mystique into creative enterprises. Body painting anyone?

Aries 21 March - 19 April

Everything you value will be held up for inspection this October thanks to retro Uranus. What you find is that what you value the most in your life doesn’t cost very much. Such revelations abound especially before the 23rd when the Sun sits in contemplative Scorpio. Remember, Pisces, you only have to live up to your own standards, not the entire world’s.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

The trade off between a happy relationship and a demanding, erratic career makes itself evident in October. Balance is everything Bull so juggle and smile. Your sex life may heat up around the 23rd when the Sun traverses Sagittarius. But life is more than a passing glance; Venus directs on the 21st and hones your style. Just in time!

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

Twins don’t usually shoot from the lip, but you can’t help it this October. Innocuous things that you let slip after the 4th reach global proportions and overturn the landscape. This may not be a bad thing; Sometimes you have to burn down the old shack to build a palace. Expect ups and downs at work through the 21st. You move from drone to drone on.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

How accurate is your intuition? Crabs may be tempted to go to the limit through most of October but will find static on the psychic line. No matter what happens inside your head, open up lines of communication with partners after the 23rd and make this Thanksgiving a very special occasion, thanks to Uranus.

Leo 23 July - 21 August

You are voted most likely to suceed at something this October with retro Uranus. But all that activity will prove to be more expensive than first thought both emotionally and fiscally. Retro Saturn requests that Lions reassess their social circle. Are you dancing with the leaders or the followers?

Virgo 22 August -

21 September Feed your inner soul this October, Virgo. Nirvana can be attained through a heaping bowl of ice cream ... or is it through frenetic exercise ... or is it through contemplative meditation? Crack the cosmic egg after the 4th when Uranus redirects. Well placed words pack a punch before the 23rd. Fire off a missive that catapults a good cause. Be heard.

Waning Wisdom And Time

by Mohammad T. Al Rasheed deusvolt@hotmail.com

This month, Mohammad Al Rasheed, shares his views on the relativity of time. Thou time stands still our reaction to it differs from situation to situation.

A

bored child, no more than five years old, was sitting uncomfortably on the long flight taking us to London. His mother was trying to engage him in conversation, prodding him to watch a movie and eat from a box of candy she had brought with her --all to no avail. He was simply bored. In answer to her many questions, he simply said, ‘this is like school.’ What he meant, of course, was that time in the plane, was like time at school. It never seemed to end. Instinctively, the child had tackled our age-old problem with time. The speed of time is constant. We are not. In the playground, this same child would complain about how fast time was moving. At school and in a plane, time is slower. We grow up and become adults, yet our perception of time is just as childlike. At the office (or at least our offices where we attend but hardly work) time is slower than a fat snail. On holidays, especially when we run away from our home to more hospitable locales, time seems to fly --literally. We never stop trying (at least in our defunct imagination) to regulate the pace of time. A futile endeavor? Of course, but who’s counting? We know very well that Time is infinite. We also know that ‘our’ time is very finite indeed. From the moment of birth, Time hounds and prods us towards death. Yet, more often than not, we want to speed it up. On the other hand, many a brilliant brain

in the history of humanity spent long hours and longer days trying for the Philosopher’s Stone or mixing recipes through Alchemy trying to find the fountain of youth and/or the conversion of base metals into gold. In other words, money and time to hoard enough of it. Of course, there hardly is enough of ‘it’ for human beings. And those who hoard it hardly enjoy it. No less a character and a brilliant brain than Sir Isaac Newton indulged in such endeavors. I suppose it is comfort that we seek. We want to bend things to accommodate

and food vents located next to each other in our mouths. The stopper that shuts one and opens the other is independent of our will. That is why we choke. A crocodile can shut and open his at will. Besides, crocodile survived the dinosaurs when we would have perished immediately.’ Back to the bored child in the airplane, he is the product of our waning wisdom. Six hours in the air is nothing compared to when, less than a century ago, such a trip would have kept him in some sort of ‘locked’ mode for far longer. Far more seriously, we have lost the ability to ‘entertain’ ourselves through times of waiting or travel. One of the most innovative (and rather impressive as far as I am concerned) modes of entertainment I have found in the pages of History comes from Ottoman Pashas travelling with the Hajj caravans from Istanbul to Mecca. These people used to sit in the Hodaj (a sort of curtained space on top of a camel’s back) and smoke sheesha. Yes, your good old fashioned sheesha. The contraption was tied to the side of the Hodaj and young boys would be running from one camel to another replacing and kindling the fire on top of the sheesha while the Pasha smoked his time away. Indolence? Well, of course, but innovative nonetheless. Now you can’t even smoke a cigarette on a plane, let alone a sheesha. But you can certainly read a book. Most people watch movies or listen to music, but this child has had enough of that probably. It makes you wonder whatever happened to crayons. Are they still in use? I would not know. My children have passed that age a long time ago

our whims regardless of natural laws, physics, chemistry, and even biology. A learned man once said to his students that our idiocy knows no bounds. When challenged by some, he simply said this: ‘Listen, I am not a misanthropist, though at times I would like to be one. But I look facts in the face and do not flinch. For example, we, as humans, assume that we are the height of evolutionary design. This is based on the simple fact that our brain is rather large compared to our body mass. Regardless of our brain size that put us on the moon, our bodies are far inferior to a crocodile’s! For example, we have our air
