This month we want to relate to you a situation very close to our hearts. Animal lovers will know of the incredible work that Tony ‘The Dogfather’ does here in Bahrain. For 13 years he has devoted his life, even giving up his business to rescue, lovingly care for and re-home abused and abandoned animals. Unfortunately the recent political situation has hit him hard, he has lost a lot of support and many of the volunteers that had been helping him have left the country. It is heartbreaking that he can no longer take in all the animals that need his care and attention as covering the mounting costs of food, rent and everyday expenses becomes more and more difficult. Currently full to bursting, he has had to implement a one-out-one-in policy, at a time when there are an ever increasing number of unwanted animals as people up and leave Bahrain. What Tony needs is both regular financial aid in the form of sponsorship and volunteers who can give up a few hours on a regular basis to help with running the shops, administering the sponsorship scheme and helping with fundraising efforts. This is an urgent appeal, and if you think you can help, by even giving just a couple of hours a month, contact him on +973 3962 9889 … Now back to the magazine - this month sees the return of the Grand Prix to Bahrain - Yipee! and BC has provided you with a detailed event list during this time. Read about the family entertainment on offer at the F1 itself and the parties and events happening around the Island to celebrate this weekend when Bahrain will be the focus of the sporting world! We get an exclusive interview with auction house Christie’s Middle East Director, Isabelle de La Bruyère, as she talks about the burgeoning arts scene in the region. Spring of Culture also features this month as we have an exclusive chat with Afro-Peruvian artist Susana Baca, Peru’s one-time appointed Culture Minister, as she performs in Bahrain for the first time. Of course we bring you all our regular features, as well as a stuffed shopping section introducing you to the Spring and Summer trends for 2012. With features from Massimo Dutti, TOD’S, Dune, Aldo and Saks Fifth Avenue there are plenty of zesty colours, summer brights and luxury items for you to peruse. Check out our Gastro Section to see the latest promotions and to plan your Easter festivities and delight the kids. Our New in Town section provides a comprehensive review of the latest things to arrive on the Island. Here we recommend the newly released book ‘My Beautiful Bahrain’ to all those interested in this wonderful country and take you through an account of extreme drag racing. We Shout About! the new film ‘Emra’a’ which is set to showcase Bahrain on the international film scene. Directed by Joseph Tito, the BD2.3 million film tells the story of three generations of Bahraini women, showing their true nature, strength, intelligence and power in contrast to the negative stereotype sometimes portrayed in the West. As always, we wish all our readers a great month …

I was so happy about the news that the Formula 1 is back this year, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one! It’s great that public events and competitions are being held to get people involved in the whole vibe leading up to the race too. It seems people have ‘gone all out’ organising the activities held over the three days, especially the Extreme Area for people to test their limits … I have no idea what this is but it sounds incredibly fun! I bought my ticket as soon as they were released and I am beyond excited for the event itself later this month, and of course all of the F1 parties that come with it! Shauna Graham

Gearing Up For F1
Everyone is talking about it and you can really feel the excitement mounting across the Island at the moment. It’s not just about the race itself, but the positive message it will give out internationally. Check out our party pages for all of the upcoming events surrounding the F1 this year. We can hardly contain ourselves!

The Matter of Makeovers
Your makeover last month was brilliant, as usual! I love seeing the whole process and the outfits were superb, especially the shoes and I went and bought myself a pair the very next day. It is interesting to add new things to the makeover and the pre-natal yoga was very interesting to read about, plus the fact that there were two of them was even better! Shoe-Fanatic If you enjoyed this one, be sure to check out part one of our amaaaazing makeover this month with two lovely ladies from the Royal Golf Club, you are in for a real treat!
Adopt An Animal!
It was inspirational to see your Pet Arabia shoot and I would definitely advise people to rescue abandoned pets before thinking about buying their next puppy or kitten. There are so many abandoned animals roaming the streets
of Bahrain and it is very upsetting to see that so many people get ‘bored’ of them and just dump them at an animal sanctuary or even worse, in the middle of the road. The comment by one of the ladies featured really stood out to me: “I wholeheartedly advocate adopting animals over purchasing them like designer accessories. There is a much more profound bond on both sides with an animal you have rescued.” Great job BC! Louise Here at BC we highly recommend pet adoption. Make sure to check out our pet section with animals ready for adoption from Tony the Dogfather and the BSPCA.
Fashion Guru
I love the recent addition of Juni’s column to the magazine, I read it religiously every month! His drawings are beautiful and show off his talent and the fashion content is really interesting to read about which you don’t find in a lot of other glossy mags. Last month really was special as I too am looking for the perfect wedding dress so his article helped me a lot. Thanks Juni! Farishta Ah yes, the wonderful Juni can assist in all of your fashion dilemmas and knows exactly how to dress women to suit their shapes. Just check out his amazing work for all of the amazing makeovers each month!
Animal Business
Your write-up on the Mara’ee Animal Production Show was really eye-catching last month and I especially loved the beautiful picture of the Andalusian horse. It tempted me to go as I was unable to go to the first show in Bahrain and it was a great way to educate people and to help businesses through trade exhibitions. Lulwa No wonder thousands of visitors have been to the show, it really is a spectacle! We are already looking forward to the next one …

Ashton Kutcher’s New Girlfriend?
Jermaine Jackson and Whitney Houston
Jermaine Jackson’s ‘Affair’ with Whitney Houston
It has been claimed that Jermaine Jackson had a year-long affair with Whitney Houston. He is said to have inspired the video for late singer Whitney’s 1985 single ‘Saving All My Love For You’, which tells the story of a woman’s romance with a married man. It is alleged that the affair between Whitney and Jermaine ended when he refused to leave
Ashton Kutcher has been spotted with rumoured new girlfriend Lorene Scafaria. The 34-year-old actor, whose six-year marriage to Demi Moore collapsed last November, was recently photographed with Lorene in Los Angeles. Ashton insists his relationship with the screenwriter is purely platonic, although according to a website they attended Madonna’s post-Oscars party together. A source claims the duo seemed to be romantically involved at a recent charity function saying, “They were Ashton Kutcher Lorene Scafaria affectionate. When they thought no one was watching, they held hands, and she rubbed his back and his neck.” Meanwhile, Demi Moore has returned home from a Caribbean break following her stint in rehab - where she reportedly received treatment for addiction and an eating disorder. his wife at the time, Hazel Gordy. Jermaine wrote about Whitney, saying that he struggled with his feelings for her. “As much as I wanted to lose myself in all these feelings, I told her to wait. Ultimately, we had to go our separate ways and it killed us both,” he said.

Chris Brown
I hope my new album shows growth and positivity to all my fans and will inspire them to live life to the fullest!
14 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2012
A track on Madonna’s new album is said to contain lyrics aimed at her exhusband, film director Guy Ritchie. There is reportedly an album track titled, ‘I Don’t Give A’, containing very obvious references to a failed marriage. “I tried to be a good girl/ I tried to be your wife/ Diminished myself/ And I swallowed my light,” Madonna is said to sing on the track. “I tried to become all/ That you expect of me/ And if it was a failure/ I don’t give a [bleep].” Madge’s rep coyly
stated that her client “has not explained the lyrics and if they are about someone specifically ... [but] I appreciate that people will speculate.”
Kim Kardashian ‘Very Good Friends’ with Kanye West
They are said to be ‘just good friends,’ despite romantic rumours to the contrary. But Kim Kardashian and Kanye West certainly made for a very cosy couple as they posed together after his Paris fashion show. By her own admission he is just ‘a dear friend’ but by many others, including his ex-partner Amber Rose, she is a longterm love interest. In a recent interview Amber, 28, said Kim was one of the main reasons she and Kanye, 34, broke up. She said, ”She’s a homewrecker! They were both cheating. They were both cheating on me and Kim’s boyfriend, with each other.” She said she also emailed the socialite asking her for an explanation but was disappointed not to get a reply. As Formula One fever hits the Island this month, experience one of the most exhilarating rides you’ll ever have in your life! Bahrain Confidential’s Editor-in-Chief takes us through the experience … 0-264kph in 8.24 seconds! On a chilly evening at the BIC track, with a host of other dragster enthusiasts, I found myself not knowing what to expect – and wishing I had at least brought some ear plugs! Then I heard it … and discovered it’s the fastest car in drag racing. The three-seat Dragster can reach a top speed of 260kph in its run, which can be over in as quick as eight seconds. It can go from zero to 100kph in just one second and each has an engine that can generate up to 1,000hp. As I was being fitted with my safety clothes everyone tried to explain to me what I was about to experience. Sheikh Salman, CEO of the BIC was chuckling away telling me I was about to have the ride/fright of my life. It was only when my arms were being strapped down that I started to realise they might be telling the truth. Just watching the digital numbers on the electronic dial count down in front of me with my safety helmet strapped on was thrilling enough. So I find it hard to describe the feeling of the initial impact after acceleration; and trust me I’ve done some stupid things in life. I was actually petrified. My stomach went in one direction and as my mouth fell open – for once, no sound came out. It felt like the longest 8.24 seconds of my life. I’m not exaggerating when I say my body felt like it had turned to jelly. Yet what an experience – I may not be in a hurry to do it again, but I’m certainly glad I’ve ticked it off my list of things to do (not that it was actually there in the first place). It was incredible and I couldn’t stop laughing when I got out and realised I was still alive! Those brave enough to buckle up in one of BIC’s special three-seat Dragsters will experience up to 2Gs as they come charging off the line. The cost for the Dragster Xperience is BD40 per person. Christie’s Champions Mid-East Art Isabelle de La Bruyère, Director of Christie’s Middle East, talks to Bahrain Confidential about the ever-increasing interest in Middle Eastern art; new sales coming up featuring Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art and another one that will benefit the United Nations World Food Programme.
I
sabelle joined Christie’s in 1998 as a picture Specialist in the 19th Century, Impressionist and Modern department, and in 2003 concentrated her skills on the Client Advisory side of the business. Now based in Dubai, she travels frequently to New York, London and Paris, following Christie’s most important sales and advising private clients through their sales and purchases at Christie’s. Christie’s has achieved record-breaking auction prices for both Modern and Contemporary Arab art since the inaugural sale in May 2006.
Bahrain is currently host to the ‘Arab Capital of Culture’, what’s your take on the art scene in the country? Do you see Christie’s playing a role in it? I go to Bahrain a few times a year to visit collectors, artists, or give lectures and love the country. Bahrain has a strong cultural program and has recently hosted some fantastic concerts, which were applauded by all. There is also a museum, important art patrons and collectors and, of course, talented young artists in the Kingdom. However, I would love to see more galleries enter the scene to support and further develop the local art market.
The Middle East is growing in significance in the art consumer’s world, where do you see this trend going? Certainly the appetite for art in the Middle East continues to increase and with each season that passes, we see even more international art collectors showing an interest in art from the region and I can only see this continuing. There is a real sense of momentum and energy behind the art fairs, auctions, gallery openings, new museum projects ... it is a collective effort.
Is there a particular area of art where you’d like to focus on bringing here as far as the Middle Eastern market is concerned? We like to re-invigorate and introduce new artists to the sales regularly. A few years ago we introduced Turkish art to the Dubai sales and this has now become a significant section within the catalogues. This year, in addition to running the second of our Part II sales, we are including a section devoted to works on paper and photography. Isabelle de La Bruyère

Is the current financial downturn in the US and Europe affecting buyers’ behaviour towards purchase of Middle Eastern art? The art market oversees the exchange of unique works of art, each of which has a real intrinsic value which can stand the test of time. Works of art are not bought purely for financial gain - passion, desire and opportunity all trigger momentum in the market. In recent months, the art market has demonstrated that it is both stable and resilient to the wider economic environment. Whilst many other markets have frozen, we continue to see strong prices in the saleroom with significant liquidity and participation at every level of the art market, across all geographies. Art is a tangible asset and to some extent the art market has benefited from the uncertainty in other markets.
“Works of art are not bought purely for financial gain - passion, desire and opportunity all trigger momentum in the market.”
Do you tend to see that people are ‘nationalistic’ when it comes to buying art or are they getting more adventurous and are ‘cross-buying’? The market has matured over the last six years and we have seen a change in collectors’ appreciation for art from other countries. Initially collectors mainly bought art from their own country but, through our auctions in Dubai, we started to see the market for modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art become first more regionalised and subsequently internationalised. We now see buyers from across the Middle East buying art from neighbouring countries, for example Lebanese buying Syrian art, Iranians buying Egyptian art, Emiratis buying Iranian art, etc. But we also now see increasing international participation in our sales in Dubai - on average, more than 30 per cent of the works sold now go to collectors globally. The market for modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art has become more internationalised with a far deeper base of buyers, which is important for the long term sustainability of the market. However, you must always look to the future and our new Part II sale is a way to introduce new collectors to buying at auction with great works by emerging artists with estimates from around USD1,500. An impressive 83 per cent of the works sold and what was really encouraging was that 39 of the artists represented in the sale were aged under 35 with most of these works bought by collectors of a similar age.

Mahmoud Saïd, Ahmed Alsoudani, Ayman Baalbaki, Jewad Selim, Louay Kayyali, Mohammad Ehsai, Parviz Tanavoli and Nasrollah Afjehei and the Turkish artists Burhan Cahit Do ançay and Azade Köker. We launched a new Part II sale to our regular auctions last season and this April will be our second to follow this format. It brings Dubai in-line with our other international sale locations so it’s a great indication of the maturity of this market. Do you have any piece of art that’s a favourite and one that you would want Christie’s to be involved with? The best thing about my job is that I am surrounded by beautiful things all the time. It would be unfair to talk about a single piece. However, I do have one artwork that I am particularly attached to, and that is the first one that I have ever bought. It is a beautiful work by Sherin Neshat, which I purchased back in 1998 and one that I will always keep.

What fuels your passion for art? What motivates you to do what you do each day? Since I moved to Dubai in 2009, I have been able to really immerse myself in the art of the region and am so lucky to be able to visit galleries, meet the artists and spend time with so many passionate collectors ….. As a specialist you never stop learning and that is probably the best thing about each day. What are your plans in the future for Christie’s Middle East? We will continue to do what we have been doing from the start – providing an international platform for the artists of the region and playing our part in creating an environment where art can flourish
Christie’s is doing a sale of art works by artists, the proceeds from which will be given to the World Food Programme. Tell us more about this collaboration ... Last year we sold works to benefit an educational programme in Saudi Arabia for the Edge of Arabia group and in October included works by Iraqi artists to benefit a new initiative there. This April we are fortunate to be supporting the sale of a group of works to benefit the United Nations World Food Programme - the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. They asked us to help and we were happy to.

Fruits of the Passion
Our resident poet indulges us some more of his masterfully written prose.
Suffered the fault, Of the lives that he bought, By his prayers to stay sane, Through redemption his thought, Fertile the marks, Adorn bristles his frown, Garland laurels for scars, Of the thorns for a crown,
Let the new days dawning, seed, The harvest of the lives we need, But not the tree to wood that cross, Be ever grown again by us,
And splintered back, subjected, torn, With vinegar on lip to quell, His persecution, we’re reborn, The thirst, for crying “save us”, hell, And by the watered crop, his tears, Reign down upon us, grain, Until we bud from weeping fears, The yield he wished, regain, Our souls he reaped, When after all his harm, What’s sown, has stopped, His life, was cropped. What heights within my mind descend? To fall on peaks where faith shall end, As summits fail to comprehend, That lands beneath cannot ascend, The pinnacles my thoughts transcend. As inspirations aimed to call, Upon our heavened dreams enthralled. And knock upon its door for all, The altitudes no longer small, Are vast in revelations hall. But grandeurs on a higher scale, Exhibit faith in answers frail. The temples which my mind inflate, Are caverns where I hibernate, For purgatory’s nauseous wait.
And life in spirits glance perchance, Inspires a mortal souls entrance, With thoughts inclined to twist and wish, Ambitions that my wisdom missed, In ideals that in faith persist. And judgments search for afterlife, Revealed just ghosts undying strife, Pursuing where the veil shall lift, Above salvations timeless gift, Amongst the lofty depths ... ... that tumbled into bliss.

lifelong lover of music, Baca crafts an innovative and organic take on the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition, in the process catapulting herself to the forefront of an AfroPeruvian revival. Susana was encouraged by her parents to explore music at an early age and she has been singing for most of her life. But it wasn’t until 1995, when her interpretation of ‘Maria Lando’ was featured on the David Byrne-produced ‘The Soul of Black Peru’ compilation, that she found international fame. With the compilation’s release, she began to record in earnest, releasing an eponymous debut, as well as several other albums which feature traditional Afro-Peruvian accompaniment. Susana gives voice and form to a rich, once-marginalised musical tradition. Peru’s formerly appointed Minister of Culture gives Bahrain Confidential an exclusive interview:
“I’m really very happy for expanding my music and culture. I’m trying a new audience, which is a challenge for me to move them with my music and overcome the borders of language.” We ask Susana what it is about Afro-Peruvian music that has made her dedicate her life its preservation and enrichment: “When I lived through racism and discrimination at school and I realised
We have achieved a Latin-American AfroPeruvian consciousness.” Susana has spoken before about the fact that women singers were frowned upon in the past in Peru. Has this significantly changed? “Yes, it has. Now there are more young people engaged to sing the music of the marginalised such as blacks and Indians, making mixes with the aboriginal music of rock and pop. María Landó (her breakthrough song in North America), is a poem with music and Afro beats. It made me step on the most remote corners of the world and get on the important stages all around the world and expose my Afro-Peruvian music and poetry to the world public.”
“Susana gives voice and form to a rich, once-marginalised musical tradition.”

that I belong to a nameless, invisible culture. I understood that in order to survive I had to sustain in spite of forgetting everything that distinguishes us as heirs of Afro-Peruvians. I learned the songs of my grandparents, cooking, dance, tales, etc. You ask me for its importance. It is very sad when they ignore you. So my fight is for my identity and so many Afro-Peruvian men and women are now appointed [in government positions] ....

iTechbahrain.com’s Faisal Ebrahim gives us a preview of the latest gadgets to hit the market …
iPad 3
Almost identical in looks to its predecessor, the main upgrades come in the form of a slight spec boost to an A5X CPU and a much higher resolution screen (Retina Display). The screen provides crisper and sharper images making browsing an altogether more pleasurable experience. The iPad 3 also has a new level of connectivity to bring faster on-the-go speeds than ever before. The camera has been improved from a 1MP sensor to a 5MP sensor, though it still lacks a flash. Apple doesn’t state how much RAM is included, but it is thought that it has doubled from 512MB to 1GB, which would explain its nimbleness.
Starting from BD239
BD1,510 BD340 Nikon D800
Nikon’s newest offering, the Nikon D800 is made up of magnesium alloy and it weighs 895 grams with card slots for CF and SD. Native ISO sensitivity is at 100-6,400 while its boost low and high ISO sensitivity is at 50 and 12,80025,600. Shutter cycle is about 200,000 while camera lag is a mere 0.012 seconds. It has a 3.2-inch LCD and HD recording capabilities at 30 frames per second.

‘A Matter Of Taste’
What are the essentials for a successful business? Critical business acumen of course, but also the presentation of your company and employees to your discerning clients …
Corporate Dressing
B
eing able to create a professional and unique company identity instantly places you in the ranks of international business standards. It also projects a positive image that resonates in the psychological perception of
your customers. Whether it’s for the service industry, entertainment, corporate or a small franchise, dressing your employees in the way you want to be perceived opens doors to opportunities and business accolades. Professional dressing is a dress code built of rules or signals that indicate the message being given both by a person’s clothing and by how it is worn. Clothes convey social messages. They can state or claim a personal or cultural identity; they can establish, maintain, or defy group norms. For example, wearing expensive clothes can communicate wealth, the image of wealth, or cheaper access to quality clothing. In every culture, current fashion governs the manner of consciously constructing,

assembling and wearing clothing to convey a social message. In business, especially the corporate world, we would want our appearance to say ’I’m competent, I’m professional, and you can trust me’. Psychologists call this control of image we present to others as ’impression management’. As corporate professionals in the modern age, the aim is not at outlandish or fashionable clothing, but at clothes which speak with authority, dignity and good taste. It is good to invest in quality not quantity especially if money is a great concern. Dressing appropriately is essential for developing poise, self-confidence and selfesteem. The moment someone looks at you, he or she begins to make value judgments as to your economic and educational level, trustworthiness, social position, sophistication and moral character. Whether we like it or not, it is a reality that we have to face. In determining your effect on people, the way you dress is every bit as important as the way you act and speak. Not only can proper dressing help uplift your credibility, it may even determine how far you go in life
Take a look at some of the designs I have created for the local industry and see if I can help you create the corporate image you are aiming for. For more information email me at junicaps@gmail.com

Health and Wellbeing
The
Ultimate Relaxation by Rebecca Cooksey
The Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa is the first hotel within GCC to offer Thalassa sea product treatments. The spa complex covers 2,000 square metres and is designed with the utmost care to ensure privacy and tranquility for every guest. The complex features fourteen treatment rooms combining seawater hydrotherapy, massages and wellness programs.
I
was lucky enough to be invited along for an afternoon of pampering and to discover firsthand what sets this spa apart from the rest. But first let me explain a little about the treatments themselves. Thalassotherapy (from the Greek word thalassa, meaning ‘sea’) is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy. It is based on the systematic use of seawater, sea products and shore climate. It is believed that the properties of seawater have beneficial medical effects upon the body because trace elements of magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium and iodide which are found in seawater can be absorbed through the skin therefore making a powerful antiageing treatment, along with maintaining a healthy circulation in the body. The spa itself is beautifully designed and all of the treatment rooms are stylishly decorated. They also offer couples’ pampering rooms. The spa
offers a range of treatments that are not available anywhere else in Bahrain including treatments especially designed for muscular and spinal problems, and the staff are highly qualified and the supervisor is a doctor. My first treatment was a mud wrap but what
I’ve ever had in the past was able to relax me to the extent that these two treatments combined together had. I was then led into another room for my mini facial. As a self-confessed beauty junkie, I love my facials and thought I’d tried out the best in the past but this facial was utterly unique. My therapist used techniques on my face that I had never experienced before and the products used just felt so right as my skin felt as if it couldn’t get enough of them and was drinking it all in. But I was absolutely flabbergasted when I looked at the end results – when I say my skin was glowing – I’m not giving it justice – it looked flawless. I really couldn’t believe that a facial that had taken around half an hour would give such amazing results that I can’t wait to try out the full facial. After my final treatment I was led back to the lounge area to relax and sip tea. It was at this point that my body did not stop sweating from my mud wrap. It was just pouring out and was quite hysterical as I must have looked quite a sight slumped in a chair unable to move. I didn’t even want to get dressed as I was too relaxed and anyone who knows me will tell you that is the complete opposite from who I am as I’m forever being told to slow down. So finally I had come across a range of treatments that actually did slow me down!

set it apart from any wrap I had experienced before was the bed that I was lying on. As the product was being absorbed into my skin I was left to completely unwind on a heated mattress which felt as if I was literally floating on water – it was incredibly relaxing. The bed itself has been designed to contain water and when you lie on it you are gently lowered into the bed so you are actually surrounded by the water yet you don’t get wet because of the protective mattress but it gives the impression that waves are gently rocking you to sleep. Just when I thought I couldn’t get any more relaxed - halfway through my treatment my therapist came back to give me a scalp massage – I was completely in heaven. My next treatment was a seawater bath with a special mix of salts added which was a little like a jacuzzi but the jets were designed to massage every part of your body and by the end of it – I wasn’t sure how I was going to get out as my body felt like jelly. The Fire And Water Body Balancing Ritual
“The pressure was absolutely perfect and my therapist performed some new techniques on me which were really effective when kneading the knots around my shoulder area.”
Earlier this year the Kempinski Grand and Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre swung open its doors to its long awaited luxury spa which offers contemporary treatments using fresh natural ingredients created with herbs, flowers and aromatic oils to rejuvenate and replenish the whole body. Rebecca Cooksey was invited to go along and indulge in this truly magical experience.
T
he hotel’s pure spa features ten elegantly stylish treatment rooms with designated male and female zones plus a lavish private couple’s spa suite. Additional relaxation facilities include sauna, steam and jacuzzi and a terraced infinity pool, plus a stylish state-of-the-art gym offering a selection of yoga, flexibility and strengthtraining for a complete package of wellness and recreation. I was fortunate enough to try the ‘Fire and Water Body Balancing Ritual’ which was a luxurious sea salt exfoliation infused with tropical fruits and concluded with a harmonising Elemental Herbology Facial. The moment you enter the spacious and modern looking reception area you already start to

unwind as the low lighting and beautiful smells have a very calming effect. The overall spa is wonderfully designed and uses a lot of wooden wall panelling giving the impression that you are entering a tranquil retreat. The Fire and Water Balancing Ritual helps to shed dead skin cells and promote new cell renewal which was exactly what I needed after being wrapped up in my wooly clothes all winter. My therapist who had the most amazing touch expertly scrubbed my body with sea salts infused with a harmonising blend of essential oils. After the oils had absorbed into my skin I was led to the shower within the room to wash it off. Already at this stage my skin felt incredibly soft but more was to come as the body scrub Kempinski Pure Spa was followed by a
massage that combines soft and deep tissue movements with acupressure to rebalance body and mind. The pressure was absolutely perfect and my therapist performed some new techniques on me which were really effective when kneading the knots around my shoulder area. I felt myself floating especially as the ritual concludes with a harmonising Elemental Herbology facial, which left my skin feeling invigorated and very hydrated. The whole experience was completely blissful and definitely worth a second visit. The spa menu offers a wide range of treatments for the whole body from the Jasmin Infused Ritual to their Relaxing Bio Harmonising massage. Their highly trained therapists will discuss your needs then recommend the right treatment for you. It certainly is a fabulous way to unwind after a day of shopping in the mall. Duration of the treatments range from 30 minutes through to two hours and prices range from BD18 to BD95 For more information and bookings please call +973 1717 1122. Visit www.kempinski.com/Bahrain

Sublative Skin Rejuvenation is the
‘all-natural’ approach to enhancing youthfulness and as Dr Pierre explains, combining this with Stem-Cell-PRP creates the ‘dream team’.
I
magine a treatment that can treat fine lines and wrinkles and improve textural irregularities all in one sitting, requiring little to no downtime that is clinically proven for all skin types. Introduced in 2009, Sublative Rejuvenation using eMatrix is breaking new grounds in the field of cosmetics by offering a new treatment light years ahead of current skin rejuvenation options.
Dr Pierre Clero
Why Sublative Rejuvenation?
For decades, laser and light based procedures have been the recommended solution in correcting all kinds of skin imperfections such as wrinkles, discolouration, sun damage, etc. Cosmetic treatments became more socially accepted when skin rejuvenation, a low-level light therapy to non-aggressive skin conditions, was introduced in 2001. In 2004, the plastic surgery movement began and people began to demand faster and more comprehensive results, like the kind you get with face lifts. At this point, fractionated laser therapies were introduced, and although considered non-surgical, these were aggressive treatments that still required weeks of downtime. Today to fill the void between non-aggressive and aggressive while providing a safe and effective treatment, a new treatment called Sublative Rejuvenation was introduced three years ago.
What is Sublative Rejuvenation?
FDA-cleared Sublative Rejuvenation using eMatrix is a unique procedure because it’s the first to combine the results you can get with aggressive treatments, with no downtime. The secret to Sublative Rejuvenation is the energy used and how the energy is delivered through the skin.
How does Sublative Rejuvenation work?
The energy, whether laser or light, must be delivered below the skin without overheating
76 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2012
Demi Moore the top layer of the skin. This has been the challenge with other more aggressive treatments because they work by overheating the top layer to the point of complete ablation, forcing new skin to develop. Sublative Rejuvenation uses fractionated bi-polar radio frequency to penetrate the skin, sending more energy beneath the surface to maximise collagen production, while keeping the top layer of the skin intact.
Benefits
Sublative Rejuvenation is clinically proven to treat fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and textural irregularities caused by excessive sun exposure. Patients can return to regular activities following treatment and unlike other non-aggressive cosmetic treatments such as Botox, fillers, or chemical peels, Sublative Rejuvenation works from the inside out by stimulating cell regrowth. Being the pioneer of Stem-Cell-PRP rejuvenation for more than ten years, Dr Pierre says it could be highly beneficial to associate the two techniques. The Sublative Matrix creates the conditions for our skin to synthesise new collagen and the StemCell-PRP naturally synthesises collagen under our skin. This association creates an effective synergy allowing impressive results without downtime

Dr Dean Cunha Gomes of the Royal Bahrain hospital answers your skincare questions and provides advice for dealing with wrinkles, scars and excess skin.
Dr Dean Cunha Gomes
Ask Dr Dean I have a scar on my nose which hasn’t gone away over time. What would you recommend to reduce it, can I use creams or would it require surgery? The options are a surgical revision for thick, raised scars or those that are wide or depressed or even those that cause a distortion of the nose. Other modalities of treatment include the use of steroid injections for patients with a keloidal tendency, the use of scar creams which are silicone based and most definitely the use of sun screen.
cause a reduction of lines and wrinkles caused by excessive animation. It takes four to five days to show its effects and lasts for around four months, though in some may last up to six months. Botox can also be used to alleviate headaches and migraines, and to reduce excessive underarm sweating.
improvement of the waist and flanks by doing simultaneous lipo-sculpture and refashioning the belly button. It would require ten days downtime and one should refrain from active exercise for a month after surgery. Preoperative tests are essential to reduce complications of anaesthesia and surgery. Please research any doctor and facility before undertaking a major surgery like this.
“A tummy tuck requires ten days downtime and one should refrain from active exercise for a month after surgery.”
I am in my 20’s but am concerned about developing wrinkles. Is it too early to start using anti-wrinkle creams? In your age group wrinkles caused by muscular contraction are common, particularly between the eyebrows, on the forehead and ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes. Anti-wrinkle creams work on fine superficial lines which develop over time due to sun damage, the process of ageing and dehydrated skin. If wrinkles caused by expression are deep and causing you concern, I would suggest Botox in addition to a good moisturiser and sun protection on a daily basis. How long does Botox last and does it have any other uses apart from tightening the face? Botox is used to relax the face and thereby
I have jowls, what can I do to reduce these or get rid of them completely? As a non invasive procedure ‘Thermage - CPT’, which uses radio energy, tightens the collagen of the face efficiently. This along with the use of filler in the pre-jowl depression and on the sides of the mouth help to rejuvenate the perioral region. The face lift is a surgical procedure which definitely has a more profound effect but has a significant downtime in comparison. For those who do not want surgery and cannot afford the downtime, Thermage and fillers are a good alternative. How dangerous is a tummy tuck and what does it involve? The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a common but major procedure. It involves removal of loose skin of the lower abdomen, reconstructing the abdominal muscles,
I lost weight rapidly a few years ago and have since been cursed with ugly stretch marks over my lower abdomen and loose skin in the flank region and lower abdomen. What can I do? When stretch marks are immature and reddish in colour, they may be improved with laser and creams. Once they become white, unfortunately there is nothing much that can be done to improve them. For a small amount of excess loose skin, a non-invasive procedure like Thermage may help. More likely however, the loose skin would need to be excised by a surgical procedure

The Rut Of Rationalisation
Kelly Armatage our resident Counsellor, Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist talks about how to lead a purposeful, fulfilling and happy life.
O
ne of the biggest ways to stay stuck and unhappy in areas of your life is through the process of rationalisation. Rationalisation in psychology, is a defense mechanism whereby yours or somebody else’s feelings and actions are logically justified. Rationalisation is just another word for making excuses. Too often, people stay in unhealthy relationships, unhappy jobs and maintain a dissatisfied weight, because of the following example thoughts: ‘He would not treat me that way, if he was not so overloaded with work.’ ‘I hate my job, but I stay because I will be unable to get that money elsewhere.’ ‘It’s only a vanilla muffin, it will not affect my overall calorie intake for the day.’ Excuses that keep people in denial, excuses that keep people feeling deeply frustrated and excuses that keep people
“Blaming other people or the world in general for any type of lack in life keeps people powerless.” stuck in ruts for months or years on end. Maybe the wife had thought about leaving her abusive husband, but once the analysis of life alone had hit her as being too difficult, she reverts back to what she knows best; acceptance of mistreatment and the forming of excuses to back it up. Maybe the man, who is highly creative tried to set up his own business, but returned back to his well paid position and rationalising it, as the process of ‘going it alone’ seemed too scary. Perhaps the overweight, young woman misses out on a slim, fit and vibrant body and justifies
calorie-loaded cakes, as she has attempted to lose weight before and ‘failed’. The largest lesson I feel is fundamental to a happy experience, is acceptance of responsibility. If there is dissatisfaction in
Nick Vujicic
areas of people’s lives, this is not due to another person, an event or an outcome. Blaming other people or the world in general for any type of lack in life keeps people powerless. Acceptance of responsibility is knowing deeply and truly that only oneself is accountable for one’s own happiness. By forming this belief creates strength, it creates determination and it creates options and freedom. Let’s take an example of the famous Nick Vujicic (a young man who was born with no arms and no legs). After feeling like a victim, hating life in general and blaming the universe for his misfortune, he tried to commit suicide and drown himself in the bath as a young
Kelly Armatage
boy. It was only after the thought of what pain that would give to his devoted, loving parents, that he stopped his attempt. He then completely turned his life around and accepted complete responsibility for what he does and does not have, then made a plan to work with it. This inspirational young man made a pact to have an amazing, happy, but most of all FULL life. He plays golf, he swims, he travels the world and tells thousands his amazing story of what he did in the face of adversity. He is an internationally recognised Speaker, Author and Entrepreneur. This guy took his life from no limbs to no limits. By accepting responsibility for an unbalanced area in our life as being our issue, we take one step out of our swamp and towards change. By knowing that there are differing ways of thinking and thus differing ways of reacting, ensures we become powerful. By overcoming those first, initial obstacles when attempting change and the knowledge of the fact that there are always so many techniques, hundreds of options and definitely a way out, we change the rut of rationalisation into a healthier rut of responsibility. It is your choice to decide which rut you wish to belong to ….

Health Updates Migraine Increases Risk of Depression
Women with a history of migraine are at a higher risk of depression, according to new research. A study of 36,000 women found those who had either suffered from different types of migraine in the past, or continued to experience episodes, were at a 36 per cent higher risk of developing depression over 14 years. All those who enrolled in the study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), had never being diagnosed with depression. Over the 14 years they were followed on average, almost 4,000 developed the mental illness. The researchers found the 6,500 women with current or past migraine were at a higher risk. Those with a condition called migraine with aura appeared to be at a higher risk still (43 per cent) than those who had migraine without aura (29 per cent), although the difference was not statistically significant. Dr Tobias Kurth, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, said, “We hope our findings will encourage doctors to speak to their migraine patients about the risk of depression and potential ways to prevent depression.”

Fasting Once a Week Could Help You Live Longer
Not eating at all for one or two days a week may protect against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other degenerative brain conditions, a team from the National Institute on Ageing in Baltimore, America found. Prof Mark Mattson, head of the institute’s laboratory of neurosciences, said: Reducing your calorie intake could help your brain, but doing so by cutting your intake of food is not likely to be the best method of triggering this protection. “It is likely to be better to go on intermittent bouts of fasting, in which you eat hardly anything at all, and then have periods when you eat as much as you want.” The findings were presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver.
Health Brushing Teeth Could Prevent Meningitis: Research
Brushing one’s teeth and flossing regularly could help prevent meningitis, a study that identifies a link between a common type of mouth bacteria and the disease suggests. Researchers in Zurich found the newly-identified bacterium Streptococcus tigurinus in the blood of patients with meningitis. They also found it in those with spondylodiscitis, or inflammation of the spine, and a type of heart disease called endocarditis. Dr Andrea Zbinden, who led the study, said the bacterium “seems to have a natural potential to cause severe disease”. It could get into the bloodstream through bleeding gums, she added, although she noted its “specific risk” had yet to be determined. The study was recently published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. Meningitis, the swelling of the tissue around the brain, can be caused by bacteria, viruses or other micro-organisms. It can be fatal. Over the last few years scientists have found that certain oral bacteria can cause heart attacks and strokes by breaking out into the bloodstream and causing blood clots.
Women More Likely to Have Deadly ‘Silent’ Heart Attacks
Middle-aged women who suffer heart attacks are 60 per cent more likely to die from them than male victims, the largest study of its kind shows. They tend to have more deadly ‘silent’ heart attacks and consequently fail to call a doctor in time, according to US research that says men under 65 are almost three times more likely to have a heart attack than women of the same age. Among more than 400,000 such middle-aged heart attack patients that researchers looked at, 4.2 per cent of 292,000 men died in hospital, and 6.8 per cent of 108,000 women. In relative terms, that meant female heart attack patients under 65 were about 60 per cent more likely to die. Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the academics noted: “Younger women presenting without chest pain had greater hospital mortality than younger men without chest pain.”
Smear Tests Raise Chances of Beating Cervical Cancer To Nine In Ten
Regularly undergoing smear tests dramatically increases a woman’s chance of beating cervical cancer, a study shows. Those who were diagnosed with the cancer via screening had a 92 per cent chance of complete recovery, found Swedish researchers, while only 66 per cent those diagnosed after going to the doctor with symptoms did so. The smear test does not diagnose cervical cancer; it checks for changes in cells that might indicate the disease. However, those identified with cancer thanks to the test tend to be diagnosed at an earlier stage, when it has not spread. The researchers studied 1,230 women with cervical cancer in Sweden between 1999 and 2001, looking at how they were diagnosed. The Swedish screening programme is much like that in England, where women aged 25 to 49 are offered a test every three years, and those aged 50 to 64 one every five years. Not all go regularly. Many are put off by its invasive nature. The academics, from the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University, wanted to see if the programme actually resulted in better outcomes, or simply led to earlier diagnosis without postponing the time of death. They concluded that screening did result in a “very favourable prognosis compared to cases detected by symptoms”. Some 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in Britain every year, while almost 1,000 die. About two-thirds now live at least five years after diagnosis. Cancer Research UK estimates the screening programme saves about 5,000 lives a year nationwide.

Earth Day 2012 - Mobilise The Earth
Eng. Rehan Ahmed
Earth Day is celebrated on 22nd April to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet and to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution. This year the theme is ‘Mobilise the Earth.’
T
he message of the first Earth Day in 1970 was so strong that it led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the enactment of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. In 1990 Earth Day went global, mobilising 200 million people in 141 countries and putting environmental issues onto the world stage. This helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
• Annually approximately four billion tonnes of carbon accumulates in the air, about 30 per cent of this comes directly from continued burning of rainforests. • Every day around 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitat and human influences destroy them. • Deserts are advancing, in Mali alone, the
“Every day 100 species of plants and animals become extinct.”
Why is Earth Day important? The Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years. Scaling this down to 46 years means that we have been around for four hours and our Industrial Revolution began just one minute ago. Unfortunately, during this short period we have greatly ransacked the planet, unsustainably utilising resources, fuels and raw materials for consumer products and to financially gain from the planet’s bounty. Consider this: • Two thirds of the Earth is made up of water, but only one hundredth of a per cent of this is freshwater. The average person uses 45,420 litres of water every year including 15,000 litres just to flush the toilet. • There are more than 500 million vehicles, each one using an average of 7.5 litres of fuel a day, releasing 18kg of carbon dioxide into the air. • Approximately five million tonnes of oil end up in the ocean every year. • 80 per cent of the world’s forests are gone. Around 50 per cent of all tropical forests have been destroyed and another acre is lost each second. 63,000 square miles of rainforests are being destroyed each year.
82 | Bahrain Confidential | April 2012
desert has taken over 220 miles in only 20 years. • The world’s per capita grain production has been decreasing since 1985 despite the use of fertilisers and pesticides. Despite the extent of the damage we have caused, there are measures we can take to mitigate our impact. We can restore habitats and return species to them, clean rivers, renovate buildings, replenish topsoil, replant forests, have better agricultural
practices and land management and many more. More importantly, we can move away from treating the symptoms of environmental damage and address the cause. By being aware and united and by implementing actions rather than words we can live more sustainably and reduce our negative impact on the earth. This is what Earth Day is working towards. The Earth Day 2012 campaign is designed to provide people with the opportunity to unite their voices in a call for a sustainable future and direct them toward quantifiable outcomes, using vehicles such as petitions, outdoor activities and events. Individuals, organisations and governments are called to act. Acts of service to the earth can start with as little as picking up rubbish, recycling or planting trees. This year’s campaign will be a launch pad for growing the environmental movement and will put forth a bold declaration demanding immediate action to secure ‘Renewable Energy for All’ and a ‘sustainable future’ for our planet. It will also build support for comprehensive action at the UN Rio+20 Conference held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. The movement will be comprised of individuals of every age from all corners of the Earth, and will call upon local, national, and international leaders to put an end to fossil fuel subsidies, embrace renewable energy technology, improve energy efficiency, and make energy universally accessible. The message of the Earth Day is to ‘Be part of the solution!’ Help protect our planet by participating in environmental friendly activities

elcome the new Nissan Patrol and its world-first technologies. The Hydraulic Body Motion Control System (HBMC) keeps the car flatter with less body roll during lane-changing and cornering, while delivering superb stability on rugged and sandy tracks. The Patrol employs an ALL MODE 4x4 system which allows the driver to quickly switch between four drive modes: sand, on-road, snow and rock, with the flick of a switch. The new Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control functions also can be selected easily with the touch of a button for braking purposes on slope road surfaces. Nissan has a world-renowned Safety Shield which includes Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, which assists the driver to avoid unintended lane departure, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) to reduce the driver’s burden and keep the speed or
distance constant, Distance Control Assist (DCA), which helps to keep a distance to the vehicle in the front. A Forward Collision Warning system senses if there is a risk of a collision ahead and warns the driver with an alarm and an indicator to brake. The Vehicle Dynamic Control automatically prevents the Patrol from sliding sideways on slippery road surfaces when changing lanes or negotiating a curve. The Intelligent Brake Assist sensor measures
the distance from a preceding vehicle and gives a warning with an alarm and an indicator on display. Motoring
The Harley Effect
Rebecca Cooksey
Learning to ride a motorbike particularly a Harley-Davidson has never been easier since Harley-Davidson Bahrain introduced the launch of the first ever Middle Eastern ‘Academy for Motorcycling’ at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). For somebody who believed that they would never be able to ride a motorbike Rebecca Cooksey was invited to do the course and was effectively proven wrong.
I
have NEVER been able to grasp the concept of riding a motorbike and believe me I have tried. From the age of seven when my father tried to teach me how to ride dirt bikes in the Australian bush through to my wilderness years travelling as a backpacker in Asia - I just couldn’t grasp it … or let me rephrase that - I grasped a little too hard as I would always apply too much pressure on the accelerator and inevitably do a wheelie and fall off. So I learnt to be a very good pillion rider instead. So when Ian Jennings told me he could have me riding a bike in less than twenty minutes and no less a Harley, I had to take him up on it - just to say ‘I don’t think so mate!’ The course is four hours long and the first hour is an introductory about Safety and the importance of wearing the right clothing
– which isn’t a problem when it comes to Harley Davidson as their fashion line is so trendy and sexy (but I digress) as they didn’t quite mean that. The whole focus was actually on the basics of rider safety skills and protective clothing. Then the fun began as we were led through to one of the garages and introduced to a simulator bike
by the end of the day whizzing around cones and speeding (probably 20 mph knowing me) around the mock up F1 track and thoroughly enjoying myself. The conclusion is, in all honesty if I can be taught to ride a bike especially during that time - then anyone can. So if you have ever dreamt of learning to ride a bike particularly a Harley - then go for it as it’s right on our doorstep and who knows you could be doing Route 66 this time next year (whatever that actually is). The academy at BIC offers three different training courses - The HarleyDavidson Experience which is a four-hour course to allow non-riders the experience of how to handle and ride a motorcycle safely; Development Courses which are one-day development programmes split into two to three-hour sessions involving both off road and on road skills development; and Advanced Courses which will be offered as the skill levels of riders develop following their training on the variety of Development Courses. When you finish the course, you’ll get an MSF Basic Rider Course SM Completion Card. Depending on your individual state this card may exempt you from having to take the riding portion of your motorcycle license test. The card may also score you a discount on motorcycle insurance. Ask your H-D® dealer and insurance provider for details
Simulator
“In all honesty, if I can be taught to ride a bike especially during that time - then anyone can.” to teach us how to actually switch the bike on without stalling and change gears before we actually went solo. As a complete beginner it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Once they were confident that we had ‘grasped’ that then we were taken to the outdoor track and introduced to our very own personal low rider for the duration of the course. I couldn’t believe that they would be mad enough to think that someone who has never even ridden a Vespa such as me could handle such a stunning looking beast – but they did. Sure enough within twenty minutes of getting on that bike – I could not believe it myself as I was actually confidently riding around the course and changing gears. Occasionally I would suddenly panic when I got a little overconfident because I’d accelerated a little too quickly. But over all I was stopping, (although still over-accelerating at times), starting and

T
he new Porsche Boxster made its world debut in front of the international public at the Porsche press conference at the Geneva Motor Show, which was also
broadcast live. The technical highlight of the new Boxster generation is the considerably lower weight thanks to the lightweight design body and the completely revamped chassis. The mid-engine roadster has also changed in appearance. The wheelbase has increased, the track is wider and the wheels are now larger. In the process, Porsche has not just significantly enhanced the driving dynamics, but the new Boxsters are 15 per cent more fuel-efficient and depending on the model, their fuel consumption is significantly less than

eight litres per 100 kilometres. Thanks to a style makeover, the Porsche now features shorter body overhangs, a significantly forward-shifted windscreen, flatter silhouette and expressive edges, making the roadster’s road posture more muscular and striking. The new interior of the Boxter offers more space and the interior concept reflects the new Porsche outline with the raked centre console.
During the two European premieres, Porsche also showcased the 911 Carrera Cabriolet and Panamera GTS. The manufacturer unveiled the 911 Cabriolet in time for the open air season and it features a lightweight design with magnesium in the hood, ensuring less weight and a more sporty feel, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. Moreover, thanks to the innovative roof concept, the typical 911 roof line is retained in its entirety for the very first time. The second European premiere showcased the Panamera GTS, the fourdoor car for the racing circuit. This sportiest model in the Panamera range has a top speed of 288 km/h, accomplishing the sprint to 100 km/h in a mere 4.5 seconds. Its race track credentials are above all down to its chassis with more power, upgraded brakes, a body lowered by ten millimetres and the especially sportily tuned chassis with air suspension Tel. +973 1745 9911 or visit the Behbehani Brothers Showroom in Sitra.

BMW 335
Sports Sedan
Arabian Magazines’ very own petrol heads, Basel Qabouq and Jehan Mohammed went for a test drive of the latest BMW 335 Sports Sedan. The new stunner on the road is not only extremely elegant - it’s also smart. A keyless entry, smooth steering and breathtaking acceleration are just a few of the details that make this car an absolute winner on all fronts.
What HE Loved About it: • The 3.0-liter engine developing 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. • The ability to switch between comfort, sports and sports+ with no traction control modes. • The beautiful sound of the engine which makes you want to turn off all music. • The breathtaking acceleration on step down. • The comfortable electronically adjustable seats. • The exterior - which makes you stand out from the crowd around you. • The most unique gear I have ever used. • The top handling abilities of any car in the same range. • The smoothness of the steering that leaves you in control.
What SHE Loved About it • The smoothest drive I’ve ever experienced. • The red interior that gives elegance and a feeling that you never want to leave the car. • The amazing sound system with easy to use menu control. • The car made me feel that girls can go as fast as crazy guys do. • The mirrors that slide down to your eye level when you put reverse on. • The on screen audio guided navigation. • No need to search for the keys in your purse, just press start engine! • The huge space for me and all of my girls to sit in a relaxed enough space for me as we go on a wild shopping spree.

Dining Out Chef, Patrick Minj shares with us his secret recipe and why ingredients do matter when cooking. Originally from India, Chef Patrick trained at the renowned National council Institute of Hotel Management in India. With twelve years of experience, he has worked at The Oberoi Hotel, Radisson Hotels Group and Claridges in New Delhi. He joined Nino’s Restaurant (a Kharafi Global subsidiary) at its Kuwait branch in 2007 before moving to Bahrain in 2008. Chef Patrick’s personal favourites are Linguini Pasta with chicken and vegetables in pesto sauce and Risotto with fresh spring vegetables, “that bring out the flavour of life.” His cooking tip for readers: “Use the best ingredients - know its origin and producer. The characteristics of each ingredient will definitely change the taste, affect the flavour and ultimately change the behaviour of the food.” To call Nino’s Restaurant Tel. +973 1756 6555. Located in Seef. Open daily from 11am to 12midnight.

Risotto Primavera Serves 4 Ingredients:
1 onion finely chopped 4 young carrots finely diced 2 celery stalks finely diced 50 gms podded fresh peas 50 gms green beans, cut into pieces 50 gms broccoli 30 gms yellow pepper, diced 30 gms red bell pepper, diced 30 gms green bell pepper, diced 50 gms egg plant diced 2 artichoke hearts, finely diced 12 asparagus tips 2 litres boiling chicken or vegetable stock 100 gms butter 400 gms risotto rice 60 gms parmesan cheese, finely grated Salt and pepper
Method:
Nino’s Star Chef
1. Have all the vegetables ready. Bring the stock to a boil in a pan and keep it at a low simmer. Melt 50 grams of butter in a large pan and fry the onions until soft. Add the carrots and celery and cook for 5 minutes, then add the peas, green beans and artichokes. 2. Stir over the heat briefly then add the ice and stir to coat with the butter. 3. Ladle by ladle add the boiling stock, allowing each addition to be absorbed before you add the next. 4. After 12 minutes add the red, yellow and green bell peppers; eggplant, asparagus and broccoli. Carry on adding stock and stirring until the rice is al dente. 5. About 20 minutes when the rice is cooked, everything else will be too. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Add the rest of the butter and the parmesan, stir briskly and serve warm.

The Battle of the Bands in South Africa is an annual competition that they hold in a Jazz club in Cape Town called ‘Valeries’. Bands would compete every week for four weeks in front of a panel of judges consisting of radio DJs and club owners. Along with the crowd support and the judges’ favour - we placed first every week and won the competition. We won R12,000 cash, studio time and comprehensive media coverage in Cape Town.

Things to know Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.
Avoiding Offence
Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.

News Bites Goats ‘Can Develop Their Own Accents’
Goats can develop their own unique accents from their surroundings, a study has suggested. Researchers found the animals develop their own speaking voice when they move away from their siblings and mingle with others. They found that a goat’s ’accent’ changed as they grew older and moved in different groups, disproving claims that their voices were entirely genetic. The team said their findings are the first to suggest that most mammals can develop an accent from their surroundings.
Woman Eats 4,000 Washing-Up Sponges
Bizarre
News
A woman has told how a rare disorder has led her to eat thousands of washing up sponges. Kerry Trebilcock, 21, suffers from a condition called ‘pica’, which causes victims to crave non-edible objects. The disorder has also caused her to eat more than 100 bars of soap. Miss Trebilcock, a dental nurse from the UK said, “I have been very particular about the type of sponges and soaps I’d eat and how I’d prepare them. If I went out for the day I’d carry a small plastic bag of cut-up pieces of sponge with some tomato and BBQ sauce in Tupperware. I was never without a ‘snack’.” Other sufferers are known to eat metal, coal, sand, chalk and sometimes even light bulbs and furniture.
Some weird and interesting news bites from around the world. Teenager Wins GBP53,000 On Lottery After Mother Forces Him to Clean Bedroom
Ryan Kitching, 19, reluctantly cleaned his bedroom after being nagged by mum Susan, when he unearthed twelve old tickets in his drawer he thought he had checked. He was about to bin them but decided to take them to the supermarket to double-check. One ticket contained five numbers and the bonus ball netting him a cool GBP52,981(BD31,580) on the National Lottery. Delighted part-time Tesco worker Ryan said, “I am totally speechless - it was the happiest day of my life easily.” Ryan said he had not worked out what he will use the money for yet but said his happy parents have suggested putting a deposit down on a house. He said, “It would take me four or five years to earn this amount of money and now I’ve got it all at once.”

Daredevil to Walk Niagara Falls on Tightrope
An acrobat said he was “thrilled to death” after being granted rare permission to walk a tightrope over Niagara Falls. Nik Wallenda, who comes from a family of circus performers, plans to carry out the stunt this summer. If successful, he will become the first to achieve the feat in 100 years and will not wear a safety harness for the 1,800-feet-long walk, which is expected to take around 40 minutes. The 33-year-old, a member of the Flying Wallendas circus clan, said he had wanted to walk across the falls since he was young and that his mother had made him special suede soled shoes for the occasion. “My dream is to walk into the mist, disappear, and walk out the other end,” he said. “Contrary to popular belief, it’s very peaceful when I’m on the wire. It’s just me and the wire. It’s relaxing.”
Lifestyle
Horoscopes “Love all. Trust a few. Do wrong to none.” - Shakespeare Aries 21 March - 19 April
Thanks to a powerful aspects that favour your sign between Mars, Mercury and Jupiter you will see some positive tangible results for all of your hard work during the first quarter of the year. If you have started your own freelance business or company it is sure to show signs that it will exceed your wildest expectations. April might be very difficult for your personal relationships and some professional relationships as well. It may be necessary for you to sever a relationship for now so that you can focus on what is important.
Taurus 20 April - 20 May
This month may find you interested in a career that you never thought of cultivating before. You are a sign that loves beauty and order so many of you will be exploring such a subject areas as landscape architecture, astronomy, history and alchemy. Your life has been quite tense and some of you may feel strung-out, nervous and strained thanks to ordeals caused by last month’s eclipse. Make sure to exercise, meditate and get plenty of rest.
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
This is the month where many of the great projects you started last fall are really going to start taking off and you may be enjoying some success that you have not seen in a few years. This is thanks to wealth planet Jupiter in your sign, which is going to allow you to have much more than you have in a while quite easily. This is a cycle of prosperity that lasts a full two years so be sure to make the best of it by dressing your best, making smart moves and staying away from toxic people that can bring you down.
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
This month a series of events will force you to become more efficient, more organised and pragmatic. At work you could be assigned more responsibility, which could steal time away from family and friends. It is crucial that you take care of what happens as work as the planets indicate lay-offs and shortages. Your stress level will be much higher than it has been in previous months and it will be absolutely crucial that you do not let your boss, clients or customers run you ragged.
Leo 23 July - 21 August
This month is much more positive than the last one and in many different ways. If you have been despondent about relationships then encouraging news comes your way with regards to a loved one you have been very worried about. Inside you will make the decision that you will not let the behaviour of others get you down. On the 23rd money your focus turns to money. You may be considering investing a bit of a windfall into a new business or into buying a property. If back pain is a problem then it might be time to do Yoga or visit a chiropractor.
Virgo 22 August -
21 September
This month you will have less leisure time. The work will be piled up on your desk and the only way to solve the problem is to plow straight through it all. You might be staying late at work or working weekends to meet deadlines. Unfortunately there will not be a lot of bonuses or raises for all of the extra work but you might retain job security and also the favour of your bosses for being such a good sport and hanging in there. Your selfless, diligent and organised attitude towards is going to pay off later in the year as a promotion or a wonderful new job.
Libra 22 September - 22 October
This month you may feel a deep sense of nostalgia for when times were better. You may find yourself calling up old friends and putting together scrapbooks and looking at photos. You may also spending some time decorating your home so that it is more reminiscent of your childhoods or of a time when you felt more secure. Some of you may decide to get away from your employment or work problems for a while and take a trip away to visit people who remind you of a time that was more innocent.
Scorpio 23 October
- 22 November
In April you will be feeling a lot more serious about life in general. Money will interest you more than it has in a while. Instead of feeling social or romantic, you will be feeling ruthless and ambitious. You are craving the respect that people who have a lot of money and power seem to enjoy. This can be yours if you learn how to direct your charms and talents the right way.
Sagittarius 23 November 21 December
This month is not as easy for you as some of the previous months have been. Things will be a bit rocky in all areas and it is not due to anything you have done wrong. It is simply a case of “what goes up, must come down.” If you have not been disciplined about maintaining your business or about keeping up with your responsibilities at work then it could catch up with you this month. A higher up or an agency could be demanding an inventory of your profits or work. You may be spending a great deal of time restructuring a system or reworking a budget so that your financial matters work better.
Capricorn 22 December - 19 January
This month finds you feeling better and burning with ambition. April will be about strategising making millions and living up to the best of your potential. This month you will be able to show off your ability to organise and make things happen. You will be given a very important project to bring into fruition. You will be the boss and others will be counting on you to make them look good. Doing a good job with regards to this creative project could bring you public recognition or a big financial reward in the near future.
Aquarius 20 January - 18 February
This month could be quite rocky when it comes to your personal life. A lover or member of your family could start acting out in a way that is very self-destructive and it will be your business to try and get this person help. Part of the drama for you will be the way this individual constantly criticises and undermines your selfesteem with negative comments. The planets say that this could be the result of an addiction or a mental illness or even a real illness. This is a lot for you to take on considering how much you are taking on at work in the first place. Still you may have no escape from the reality that you have to do something about it.
Pisces 19 February - 20 March
You have always been a dreamer and a visionary and in April your mind and ambition wants to soar to heights that are beyond the achievable grasp of most people. You are going to feel like a misunderstood genius this month as not too many really can follow what you are talking about. However all you have to do is be patient and you soon will have many followers as others realise how smart you really are.

I
want to begin by defining a rather technical term. I am not trying to be facetious, rather, I have something in mind which should be clear as you read on. Beating about the bush? Perhaps, but we live in times that require discretion if not outright silence. But then how does a writer who is not interested in whether Michael Jackson died by his own hand or by the aid of his doctor, construct an article that is both informative and has a touch of logic in it? Beat about the bush, I suppose. The term henotheistic means that a certain person or people are devoted to one god but believe in the existence of many gods. God, in this article, does not mean the God you worship by necessity. It is more in tune with Lord, as in landlord, or leader, or anyone who has authority over you real or imagined. For the sake of intellectual honesty, the term was and still is applied in theological studies to the early Israelites who were devoted to Yahweh but believed that other gods existed, much to the chagrin of Moses as the Old Testament keeps telling us. With the plethora of evangelical madness these days in all three religions, you’d think we would soon have a Moses warning of fire and brimstone. Until further notice, we are to listen and decide to live our lives as is. On the more mundane level of existence in the here and now, we are thoroughly henotheistic in our behaviour. We are devoted to our parents, spouses,
Who, What Has Power Over You? Who, or what, most affects your everyday life? Like it or not, reality dictates that we succumb to something or someone that has power over us whether recognised or otherwise. Mohammad Al Rasheed gives some logic to the matter ... children, and even to some of our friends, but we know full well that there exists something or someone who is far more powerful and far more sinister. Your boss at work is one. Your local politician is another. We will not forget your local rice merchant who can starve you to death by hoarding and storing this essential commodity and making you eat the proverbial cake. Then there is the madman (or woman) who laces him or herself with bombs and decides to take a final walk down the souk. Don’t forget the taxi driver who takes you from the airport after a ten-hour flight and drives faster than the plane that you just landed in simply to get you ‘home’. Those who have power over you
this ancient and glorious nation behind his limp dwarfish heel into uncharted territory. What of the Armenian genocide? It happened more than a century ago and, dreadful as it was, it cannot compare with what France as a nation did over its long history. Deplore it? Of course, but enacting laws today that dig the grave of History serves little or no purpose. Why not try and reconcile Turk and Armenian? Let History be a lesson and not a punishment. If you chose to make History a punishment, we all suffer since none of us is totally innocent as nations go. Take a page from the Bible, since you profess to read and believe it, and do not cast the first stone. That was the example of an ‘elected’ official. If you want examples of what un-elected officials do, just watch your television screens. These are powers that cannot be denied and have to be believed in, whether we like it or not. The most immediate power, however, that you meet every day, is your immediate superior, be they a teacher at school, a boss at work, or even a step-mother at home. How on earth are you going to deny them in favour of being labelled a ‘monotheist?’ So next time you enter your local Synagogue, Church, or Mosque, and declare that you are a monotheist, be intellectually honest and whisper the term: henotheist. It is closer to the truth and rather smug in the face of adversity. Here ends the sermon for the month of April. Happy Easter

cannot be denied or neglected. Their actions speak for themselves and they often are rude, vulgar and more often than not, quite mad. Though you are monotheistically devoted to your aforementioned favourite groups, you are henotheistically attached to all those who exercise power over you. Duality (as in Good and Evil)? Polytheism? Of course. Humanity knows what it empirically touches. And there is no more potent empiricism than that of our politicians. They simply rule our lives, whether we elect them or they elect themselves. Take for example one such ‘elected’ official. Take President Sarkozy of France as your guiding rod. This man is dragging
