Artificial Intelligence: How Does it Add Value?

I

t is virtually impossible to go anywhere in the smart technology market, including the security and safety sectors, without coming across some reference to artificial intelligence (AI). Indeed, there are some systems which proclaim they are AI-enabled without going into any detail about how the benefits can be realised. It’s as if the goal is to flag the system as AI-enabled rather than solve problems. The first point to consider when assessing the likely benefits from AI is that finding an agreed definition of what constitutes artificial intelligence is a bit like trying to knit fog! Although AI is a generic ‘catch-all’ description which intimates a level of performance rather than specifying definable and quantifiable capabilities, it has been embraced by many as the leading bullet point to describe their latest device or system. When AI first surfaced in the 1950s, it was considered the stuff of science fiction. However, as people came to understand how technology was achieving its goals, they

The word ‘Intelligent’ is increasingly being applied to all manner of systems and devices, and whilst there are a growing number of technological developments which add value, there is some debate as to how ‘intelligent’ these options really are. The introduction of the various sub-sets of artificial intelligence technology seems to promise value for end users, but what is AI and machine learning, and can it help create smarter systems? dismissed the thought that machines could show intelligence! Big Blue is a great example. The chess playing computer was developed by IBM, and went on to become the first computer to defeat a reigning world chess champion in a chess game using standard timings. Hailed as the pinnacle of artificial intelligence, IBM was

A Smarter Interface for Access Control?

I

n today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, flexibility and ease of use are key features for any solution. Users have become accustomed to intuitive interfaces, and a growing number of smart devices are shipped without any manuals or support documentation because of this. Phones and tablets have created expectations when it comes to user interfaces, and people know how to navigate around their devices with ease. One interface that highlights flexibility, and which can also be used with both standard PCs and devices with touch screens, is the internet browser. Due to the everyday use of internet services, plus the proliferation of browserenabled devices, the knowledge-level amongst end users is very high when it comes to the humble browser. Additionally, every PC ships with pre-loaded browser software, and hardware often includes a number of choices. Additionally, browsers are free of charge. The browser is effectively a basic form of

On-going developments in the wider technological world have enabled smart solutions to increasingly leverage advances from a number of other industries and sectors. Even technological progress in the consumer market can be quickly realised in modern commercial systems. One such advance is the use of browsers as graphical user interfaces. This approach delivers a number of benefits for integrators and end users. Benchmark considers the use of browsers in access control systems. display software. It simply interprets mark-up code and presents the various elements of a web page as specified. It is the elements displayed within the browser that the user interacts with, and because those elements are presented in the same way, regardless of

Mobotix donates thermal imager

n recent months, the Ministry of Health has intervened with recommendations to prevent possible interruption or decrease in blood donations within the region. The aim was to improve processes at the donation centres in order to aid management and raise awareness of transfusion needs. To ensure donors’ safety and to avoid crowding in the waiting rooms, regulating access and managing the flow became an important concern. AVIS Milano received a donation from MOBOTIX of a Thermal TR imaging camera, which has been installed in the room where donors are processed. This reduces risks and helps manage day-to-day operations. The camerah is equipped with a radiometric thermal sensor, and can detect variations in temperature. Integrated into AVIS Milano’s existing system, it is programmed to detect

VIDEO MANAGEMENT

Smart Search enhanced in XProtect 2020 R2

With the latest update of Milestone XProtect VMS 2020 R2, Milestone Systems offers three new search categories and improved geographical awareness. Searching for evidence is one of the core missions of video management operations but it can sometimes become a timeconsuming task. With XProtect the ambition is to enable users to work smarter by allowing them to spend less time searching and more time finding.

M

ilestone introduced a new centralised Search framework in the 2019 R3 software update which enabled users to search for motion, alarms, events, bookmarks and other types of data, in one single place making it quicker, easier, and more efficient to find specific video sequences. With the 2020 R1 update, the centralised search framework was expanded

to include license plate recognition searches. In the 2020 R2 update, the framework is extended once again, to include three new categories allowing users to search through ONVIF compliant metadata. This means users can now also target their searches by searching for people/humans, vehicles and location. This provides more filtering options to work smarter and find reelvant footage.

VIDEO ANALYTICS

Video Analytics Options

Benchmark looks at 12 products and systems of interest for integrators and end users who are looking to implement smart solutions which make use of intelligent video analytics.

M

odern smart solutions are effective and robust data collection and management systems, which can automate actions and status changes in response to exceptions or incidents of various types. These vary from an intruder being detected in a secure area, through a range of business scenarios such as deliveries arriving or health and safety violations, to customer-facing tasks such as welcoming visitors or broadcasting marketing messages. Often such solutions use triggers, and video analytics is a flexible and cost-effective way of creating actionable notifications.

Bosch: Video Analytics Bosch offers EVA (Essential Video Analytics) and IVA (Intelligent Video Analytics) as a

standard licence-free feature of its cameras and codecs. EVA includes tamper detection; intrusion detection; indoor people counting; asset protection; objects in, entering or leaving a single or multiple areas, line crossing, route following, loitering, left or removed objects, behavioural change, and object counting. IVA includes more robust detection, managing changes in lighting or harsh environmental conditions. Analytics rules include all those supplied with EVA, along with tracking of ships, object counting using a virtual line or within an area, occupancy levels, motion and speed in crowds, wrongway flow, and facial detection. With both EVA and IVA, the analytics engines record the metadata, and as a result the data can be used to create advanced
