PROJECTS WITH BENEFITS

New business is always welcomed especially if it can become a long-term deal with additional revenue coming in on a regular basis

I’m sitting writing this piece whilst waiting for my car to be serviced. The work is being carried out as part of a plan that came with the purchase of the vehicle and not only do I get the cost of two MOTs and two services included but also as much coffee as I like from the machine. The hope for the dealership is that I will have experienced such a hassle-free time I’ll set up a new package once this one is completed. You probably run similar schemes for system management and maintenance – the customer pays a bit each month and when it comes to invoicing time, it’s already paid for. What’s not to like?

Thanks to the development of technology such as apps and the Cloud, there is now another route to regular income beyond the standard maintenance package, recurring revenues.

Video doorbells are a classic example of this; the customer pays for the installation of a new device that will allow them to see on their smartphone who has come calling, but in order to view and store that data they will need to pay an annual/monthly fee. The app they are using can often be branded to promote the installer and the monthly fee is low enough to warrant a shrug when offered in the first place – “for just a few pounds each month you can have this…” makes a much softer landing than “it’s £60 a year”. This is likely something that your clients first came across with Ring or another such DIY unit, yet now that manufacturers of professional systems, such as Paxton, have developed an app (see the Product Test later in this edition) that does the same thing but on a much higher standard of kit, it should make proposing the service an easy sell especially to those upgrading from the DIY model. In fact, it’s probably a feature of access control that will be expected going forward in the same way that new cars opening with a remote key is seen as a given. “And how do I see who is at the door and let them in using my phone?” will be considered a basic service question in the future.

In a world where washing machines now have apps and the next generation of youngsters carry out a multitude of tasks via Wi-Fi or data on their smartphones we can only expect an increasing number of security and fire technologies to adopt the app route – all leading to recurring revenues opportunities in the years to come.

CCTV is no stranger to recurring revenue with licenses for analytics software and connectivity with ARCs. The Software-as-a Service (SaaS) model is also an established method of continuous revenue streams with annual renewals bringing in the money.

If you are keen to find out more about recurring revenue, check out this month’s Panel feature for a host of tips from industry experts about boosting income. At a time when smartphone apps appear to be required for everything from online shopping, booking holidays or viewing security videos now is the time to take advantage of their popularity.

PRODUCT TEST

The SAA5015 is promoted as a standalone alarming device for sheds, garages, caravans and similar buildings. It is battery powered although can be permanently powered and emits a highvolume alarm signal when triggered. It uses a simple PIN code to disarm and is set using a single button press. With dimensions of 3.8 x 6.6 x 16cm and a weight of 212g including batteries it is easy to install in any location requiring intrusion detection. Detection range is given as 12 metres.

GETTING STARTED

The device is supplied without batteries so four “AA” batteries must be inserted before use. The rear panel is held in place by a single screw that is removed for

Yale – SAA5015

access to the battery holder. Care must be taken as this is not a captive screw so can be easily misplaced. Once fitted the unit is programmed for its PIN code as below.

An upper keyhole slot and lower hole on the rear of the case are used to mount the unit onto a suitable surface, although it can be left free-standing if preferred. It should be mounted close to the point of entry but not obviously in view so that it will be less likely to be seen and destroyed by an opportunist burglar. As with any PIR detection device it should be positioned so that it can be triggered by movement as soon as possible on building entry, but of course must be positioned to avoid direct sunlight from windows or heat sources that could cause nuisance triggering.

Although not covered in the instruction sheet, the device has a pair of sockets at the top of the main body but covered by

the rear panel. The first is identified as an AC adaptor socket to provide 4.5v if mains power is available in the building. The second is an external siren socket that can be used to feed an external siren though no specification information is given. Access holes must be drilled in the rear panel if these sockets are used.

PROGRAMMING

The unit must be programmed each time the batteries are removed or changed. This

A SIMPLE TO INSTALL, FLEXIBLE AND VERY COST-EFFECTIVE INTRUDER DETERRENT DEVICE FOR OUTBUILDINGS, THAT MAY HAVE POTENTIAL FOR VEHICLE USE WHERE CONTENT THEFTS ARE INCREASINGLY COMMON

is a simple operation involving entering the required PIN code once the batteries are inserted. While there are only four numbered buttons on the front panel, this still allows for 256 different PIN codes as repeat button presses are allowed. With a PIN code programmed, the unit is armed by simply pressing the “4” button. The unit emits a short beep and flashes the LED to indicate that the exit timer has started. After thirty seconds the unit is then in armed mode indicated by a short beep

and flash of the LED. On re-entry the unit is then disarmed by entering the PIN code within the 10-second entry time.

PERFORMANCE

The SAA5015 works well in practice with simple setting and ease of PIN entry to disable on re-entry. Once set the device gives an exit delay of 30 seconds before it is armed, and on detection of entry gives a 10 second delay for the PIN to be entered before the alarm sounds.

The initial button press to arm the unit emits a loud beep of approximately 66dB at 1 metre. A slightly higher tone is heard following correct PIN code entry. On alarm the unit was recorded as emitting an alarm sound of 102.7dB at 1 metre, so achieving the stated 100dB. This is piercingly loud and should deter an opportunist thief. With doors closed it was loud enough to be heard in an adjacent building on a quiet evening, but results will depend on local conditions.

Once the alarm is activated, it sounds for 30 seconds, after which it will return to its active detection mode. If further motion is detected, the alarm will sound again for another 30 seconds and keep repeating until motion ceases or the unit is disarmed.

The internal electronics are based on two printed circuit boards. The main PIR module board and a sub-board to hold the

key switches and LED. The build quality is of a high standard with surface mounted triangle tactile metal dome switches giving a positive feel to the front panel buttons. The PIR module is controlled by a 16-pin processor, but the ident has been removed. Typical battery life is not stated but quiescent operating demand appears very low. The first beep at power on draws around 10mA momentarily, but then drops to a negligeable value until activated. On alarm the unit draws 270mA for the 30 second period of the alarm, so battery life will be dependent on alarm activity. The LED lights continuously to indicate low battery voltage.

If using an external power supply, there does appear to be some feed to the battery terminals so it would be advisable to remove the internal batteries if permanently powered.

While the siren output socket does not appear to be supported by any Yale product, it was found to have an output of 3.2v on alarm that could be used as a trigger signal.

CONCLUSION

A simple to install, flexible and very costeffective intruder deterrent device for outbuildings, that may have potential for vehicle use where content thefts are increasingly common.

Paxton – Paxton Entry app & myPaxton

With the newly launched Paxton Entry video door entry mobile app, users can now answer video calls from their external panel via their smartphone or tablet. The customer can see and speak to visitors, and grant or deny access from anywhere via an internet connection.

Management of the Paxton Entry app sites and users is carried out via the new myPaxton portal, a cloud-based platform. Of particular interest is that a monthly user licence fee offers Paxton installers the opportunity to generate regular recurring revenue from any new and existing Paxton door entry installations.

The newly launched mobile app is compatible with existing Paxton Entry sites with no additional installation or disruption. Users can utilise Paxton’s Entry monitors and the app together or choose to use the Paxton Entry app without a monitor.

Gareth O’Hara, Paxton’s Chief Sales Officer, said: “The Paxton Entry app is a new, exciting addition to our Paxton product range. The app is designed with simplicity in mind, offering an easy-toinstall and simple-to-use door entry mobile app alongside our existing Entry range.”

SO HOW EASY-TO-INSTALL AND

SIMPLE-TO-USE

IS THE APP?

Management of sites is carried out using the myPaxton portal, so the first step in the process involves getting registered

SETTING UP

If already a registered Paxton Installer, your existing login credentials grant you access to the cloud platform. One account is used to administer all sites managed by a single company.

Anyone not already registered will need to sign up on the myPaxton online portal and then supply the required information. Registration is confirmed via email meaning you will have access to myPaxton and be able to manage sites, users and your account.

information such as its name and address to be designated. If the Entry hardware is already installed, entering the serial number of the unit and the engineer code will identify the relevant Entry system. If the panel is connected to the internet, it will be added to the Sites list. If the hardware is not connected to the internet or not yet installed, it can be added using the Hardware tab at a later date.

When first accessing the myPaxton portal, there is a short video outlining the steps described here.

To manage sites in the portal, each needs to be added on the platform. This is quick to complete because it only requires the Sites tab to be activated and

To need is quic requir

Customers wanting to use the Paxton Entry video door entry mobile app will need to be added to the relevant site. This is achieved by selecting the site and clicking on ‘Add A New User’. You fill in the user’s information and subsequently the email address entered will be used to sign them up to the Paxton Entry app. The monitor ID and group will be used to determine how they are called from an

Entry panel. When set to ‘Active’, the app user can pair themselves to the site to receive calls and they will start incurring costs as an active user (ensure their ‘Licence’ field is marked ‘Active’).

All devices with the same ID number will receive calls simultaneously when

that ID is called from the panel. Once one device answers the call, the other devices will stop ringing. This means, multiple app users and Entry monitors can be assigned to the same residence, office, or other shared space.

Once a mobile app user has been added to a site, they will need to pair their device to that site.

When pairing a user device for the first time, the mobile user will need the ‘Paxton Entry – New user registration’ email which they will automatically receive. The email will contain the email address and the temporary password required to setup the app.

USING THE APP

The customer will need to download and install the Paxton Entry app on their smartphone or tablet from the App Store or Google Play, and then they can log in. After setting a new password, the client is connected to the device and ready to answer video calls and manage access to the premises.

When a visitor initiates a call on the registered Entry panel, the call is put through to the designated user(s). The customer will be presented with a video image of the caller along with two-way audio and three icons ‘Mute’, ‘Hang Up’ and ‘Unlock’. Using the desired icon, the user can ultimately choose to allow or deny access.

CONCLUSION

Remote access via smart devices is not a new concept by any means, but what is different here is that it is linked to a professional system which, by design, means there are extra benefits and applications for installers and customers beyond the basics. For example, there is no need to have only one person responsible for enabling access because a number of users can be added. There is no requirement for a receptionist to be sat at a desk terminal to allow entry for visitors.

Calls from multiple Entry systems can be answered from a single device, making it easy to control access across more than one building without a common network. The Paxton Entry app also offers the option to have an entirely monitor-free door entry system; if internal monitors are not desired or required, the client can use a smartphone or tablet instead.

The main benefit for installers will be the recurring revenue opportunities and the fact that these are not limited to just new installs but any existing Paxton Entry systems (a firmware upgrade may be required). An extra bonus for installers is the ability to remotely manage sites and users using the cloud portal, meaning there is no need to delay making any necessary changes.

Easy-to-install and simple-to-use are indeed suitable descriptions of the new developments, but don’t tell the full story on their own.

INCREASE YOUR RECURRING REVENUE

Looking for tips on how you can improve your opportunities for recurring revenue streams?

The PSi Panel of experts offers advice for installers on boosting regular income and growth

Ric Martin – Pinnacle Systems

To improve and increase recurring revenues, installers should focus on offering value-added services and utilising the latest technology solutions to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.

One effective strategy is adopting a subscription-based model, which allows clients to shift from capital expenditure (CapEx) to operational expenditure (OpEx).

This model provides clients with a predictable, manageable cost structure and removes the need for large upfront investments. Instead, they pay a regular fee for system usage and ongoing support, creating a steady stream of recurring revenues for the installer while delivering continuous value to the customer.

The added advantage includes consistent technical and sales support to ensure seamless systems operations, enhancing customer service excellence.

Technology plays a critical role in maximising business opportunities.

Systems that offer real-time health monitoring can significantly enhance maintenance services by enabling proactive management.

With real-time insights, installers can quickly identify and address potential issues before they develop into major problems. This approach not only minimises costly emergency repairs but also improves system reliability, leading to higher levels of customer satisfaction. Proactive maintenance keeps systems running efficiently and strengthens long-term relationships with clients, reducing churn and stabilising revenue.

Installers can further increase their revenue streams by expanding their service offerings across multiple disciplines, such as security, HVAC, and fire protection systems. A platform that centralises and integrates multiple systems into a single interface can streamline operations for clients, simplifying management and improving service efficiency.

This multi-disciplinary approach opens up

opportunities for upselling additional services and enhances customer loyalty by providing a comprehensive solution for their various needs.

By offering better system management, proactive maintenance, and superior customer service through real-time monitoring, installers can significantly improve customer retention. Satisfied clients are more likely to continue long-term contracts and explore additional services, resulting in increased recurring revenues and sustainable business growth.

Put simply, recurring revenue through subscription models is an opportunity for installers to generate steady long-term income streams. An added benefit is enhancing longstanding relationship with customers. This is because the service continues well after installation.

People are already familiar with using their mobile devices for many daily activities. There are reportedly 111.8 million mobile subscriptions in the UK across 87 million active mobile devices. These stats show that mobile app service subscriptions are now a publicly accepted market.

In the security industry this is starting to become an important means of functionality and income for installers, and although Software as a Service (SaaS) is still emerging in the UK, service

Focusing on technology and expanding service offerings beyond traditional on-site support is essential. Cloud-based solutions across all disciplines, such as intruder alarms, access control systems, and video surveillance (VSS), are key components.

By integrating cloud technology, installers can offer remote monitoring, maintenance, and system upgrades without the need for physical site visits. This not only adds convenience for time and resource-stretched customers but also opens the door to long-term service contracts.

Customers benefit from continuous system performance, while installers gain predictable income through ongoing monitoring and management services. And this is all going to evolve at a much faster rate with the rapid integration of AI and machine learning systems.

Rather than focusing solely on installations, installers should offer services like remote diagnostics, health checks, software updates, and proactive maintenance plans. These offerings give customers peace of mind and provide

contracts are certainly not. Many installers will have already been operating long-term service and maintenance contracts with customers, so the concept is far from alien. Additionally, what is driving change and growth towards SaaS is the steady and continued adoption of cloud-based services that enable installers to promote solutions that are no longer solely ‘onpremises’. The growth of mobile networks across the country also makes accessing cloud solutions simpler and more reliable, making this market increasingly attractive. All this means that security installers looking to develop SaaS business models should concentrate on the sale of products that come with a continued service through a remote or mobile application.

opportunities to secure regular income. Incorporating advanced options, such as video analytics as a service (VAaaS) or access control as a service (ACaaS), can further drive long-term agreements.

By presenting comprehensive packages that combine installation with ongoing support, customers are more likely to commit to long-term maintenance and monitoring services, ensuring a continuous revenue stream.

To support this model effectively, it is essential to establish robust management and create dedicated teams focused solely on maintenance and service, separate from the installation teams. This structure ensures customers receive fast and efficient support, fostering satisfaction and encouraging long-term relationships.

By blending the latest security and fire safety technology with varied service offerings and a dedicated support structure, from design and specification through to maintenance and monitoring, installers can offer comprehensive, end-toend solutions. This approach not only secures ongoing revenue streams but also positions your business as a proactive and trusted partner.

To increase recurring revenue, installers can leverage apps, cloud configuration technology, and advanced maintenance services to create consistent income while enhancing customer satisfaction. The goal should be to add value that customers can feel in their day-to-day lives, rather than simply offering one-off solutions.

First, offering end-user apps that provide functionality beyond the initial installation is a direct way to keep customers engaged and returning. For example, apps that give real-time security notifications, system health checks, or automation controls help users see the continuous value of their system. Subscribing customers to these services not only provides them with convenience but also locks in long-term relationships through recurring payments.

Second, cloud-based technology is key for remote management and diagnostics. By proactively monitoring systems, you can offer predictive maintenance—alerting customers to potential issues before they become expensive failures. This kind of service, where installers fix problems before they occur, makes your business indispensable and turns a one-off job into an ongoing partnership.

Finally, peace of mind is something that never goes out of style. Offering a service plan that includes 24/7 remote monitoring or annual maintenance packages reassures customers that they’re protected in the long term. Not only does this secure recurring revenue, but it also sets your business apart as a proactive, customer-first service provider.

These solutions are practical, scalable, and they cement your role in the customer’s long-term security strategy. The key is to think beyond installation and look at how you can add continuous value, offering services that not only solve problems but prevent them.

Oliver: Maximising revenue is challenging when clients are looking for the most cost-effective solutions at present. Simultaneously, the need for data to enhance business operations and decision-making is becoming crucial. Clients are increasingly interested in using AI for decisions beyond security, extending to broader business insights. These wider data insights and analysis can drive efficiency within our End User’s business operation as well as innovation and improvement.

Mike:

In today’s ever-evolving physical security

landscape, installers are presented with unique opportunities to enhance and increase their recurring revenues. As traditional preventive maintenance visits, such as cleaning cameras, checking connections and system functionality, have declined, the rising importance of cybersecurity offers a new avenue for sustained income.

As cyber threats become more prevalent, focusing on the cybersecurity of security systems can create substantial recurring revenue opportunities. Regular maintenance visits should now include assessing and updating measures. This could

The digital revolution has profoundly reshaped the way we live and work, and the security industry is no exception. So, for installers looking to improve and prosper in the future, staying ahead of the ‘digital’ curve, so to speak is really important. One area that has seen profound changes is service contracts. Traditionally, security service maintenance contracts were primarily focused on on-site visits, routine inspections, and reactive repairs. However, with the advent of digital technologies, it has become increasingly feasible to monitor and manage security systems remotely. This has led to a reduction in the need for frequent onsite visits, saving both time and money for both service providers and clients. Moreover, the proliferation of associated program apps has empowered clients to take a more active role in managing their security systems. These apps allow clients to monitor system performance, receive alerts for potential issues, and even initiate certain maintenance tasks remotely. While this trend has increased the level of client autonomy, it has also created new challenges for installers and service providers who

must adapt to a more technologydriven environment.

To meet these evolving needs, there is a growing end-user demand for virtual building management systems (VBMS) to manage these disparate systems and programs. VBMS provide a centralised platform that integrates the management of multiple security systems, allowing for a “single pane of glass” view of the entire infrastructure. This can significantly simplify maintenance and operations, improve response times, and

protects the integrity of the system but also enhances trust with clients.

Updating firmware: Keeping hardware firmware updated is crucial. Many security devices have critical vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs) that can be mitigated through timely firmware updates. For instance, ensuring that video management systems and access control units have the latest patches helps prevent unauthorised access and data breaches.

Conducting vulnerability assessments: Offering periodic cybersecurity assessments can identify potential weaknesses in the system. This service can include penetration testing or compliance checks against industry standards like NIST or ISO 27001.

Regular security training: Providing training sessions for clients on best practices in cybersecurity can help them understand the importance of maintaining their security systems, further solidifying your role as a trusted advisor.

enhance overall system efficiency. Installers who stay abreast of developments in VBMS and other emerging technologies, can position themselves as valuable partners to clients who are seeking to modernise their security infrastructure. By offering innovative solutions and leveraging the latest technologies, installers can differentiate themselves from competitors and secure long-term success in the fast-evolving security market.

Alex Page & Chris Newey – Resideo

Alex: Ultimately, increasing recurring revenues and offering tech options comes down the same fundamental sales principles as anything else - you need to stay connected your customers’ changing needs and make sure

that what you are offering is adding meaningful value.

Chris: When installers are considering how to maximise recurring revenue and investigating the latest tech options it’s important to remember that you

THE KEY TO SECURITY

What are the options and considerations for businesses when choosing a keyholding method for physical security, staff access, and facility management? Do you know which is best to recommend?

When it comes to access control, a great deal of conversations in the security product industry and the media focus on digital solutions that incorporate mobile credentials, biometrics, and other modern technologies. Such systems are excellent for controlling worker and guest access; nevertheless, it is often overlooked that buildings must be locked and unlocked with physical keys on a daily basis, and this arrangement is unlikely to change overnight.

One of the reasons why physical keys have not been completely replaced yet is the high cost of deploying a new digital access control system, particularly when there is no pressing need to move away from the old method that have served society for centuries. Second, while technology is rapidly evolving, there may still be resistance to change due to end-user’s scepticism about replacing a working (and, in general, physically secure) method with a new system that can still be compromised but in a different, digital way or, worse, run out

of battery unexpectedly leaving no other way of entry.

Consequently, it will take time for keys to be completely eradicated, but they must be managed now to maintain both seamless business operations and the security of premises and assets. In real life scenarios, there are various approaches to keyholding, so what are some of the most popular ones?

We asked Keynetics to explain the differences:

KEYS MANAGED BY STAFF

A range of organisations, ranging from SMEs to multi-site retailers opt for an easy solution of staff handling keys. In retail, for example, this means that

store managers are responsible for locking and unlocking the premises, as well as responding to alarms, and even arriving on-site in the event of emergency maintenance. While this might seem like a low-cost, convenient option for businesses, it has its drawbacks.

First, there is the human factor and a high reliance on staff to arrive on time. Business operations might be disrupted by mitigating circumstances like illness or heavy traffic. And there is more! What happens if a staff member in charge of keyholding decides to quit quite abruptly and walks away with keys in their pocket? Such a scenario would entail the replacement of keys and locks, which would be costly if occurred regularly.

IT WILL TAKE TIME FOR KEYS TO BE COMPLETELY ERADICATED, BUT THEY MUST BE MANAGED NOW TO MAINTAIN BOTH SEAMLESS BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND THE SECURITY OF PREMISES AND ASSETS

Second, when employees are forced to respond to alarms during unsociable hours, not only is their work-life balance affected (which can lead to poor staff retention), but also their personal safety may be jeopardised. Should a lone female worker arrive on the premises when intruders could have the ability to harm not only corporate assets but also her? The answer is obvious, and the consequences could be quite dramatic.

TRADITIONAL KEYHOLDING

For purposes of this article, “Traditional Keyholding” refers to a scenario in which a security or facilities management services provider holds a set of keys for alarm response, lock and unlock services, and other operations that require access to property. Such keyholding method is most certainly secure, and the costs are proportional to the service. It provides peace of mind because clients can be confident that if the alarms go off or keys are required for any other reason, they will be brought over. However, a common disadvantage of this method is the speed of response (especially in critical situations), with an average waiting time of roughly two hours. Aside from the cost and slower response time speed, there is another factor to consider. While keys are stored at a secure location offsite, audited regularly and transported in key lockers during security patrols, they can still be lost and misplaced, resulting once again in costly key and lock replacements.

MECHANICAL KEY SAFES

Storing keys at the point of entry in a key safe is an ultimate way of ensuring that keys are always available when needed. Mechanical key safes may be a cheap and quick solution, but there are several crucial considerations, especially when deployed at commercial sites.

First, think about security of such devices. Most over-the-counter key safes are not very secure, and only a few such products have received loss prevention certification to prove their resistance to intrusion.

Second, mechanical or push-button key safe codes are the same for every person using them. What if the code is shared with someone who should not have access? Or what if an employee leaves business on less than favourable terms? Mechanical key safe codes must be manually changed, and there is no record of who has accessed the keys and when.

DIGITAL KEY SAFES

Just like with mechanical key safes, digital key safes store keys at point of entry, which benefits all involved parties. However, the security and digital capabilities of digital key safes, such as tracking, key detection, and access granting, differ greatly between brands.

As a result, the selection process of the most suitable solution will depend on user’s requirements.

A major consideration, like with any access control solution, is physical security of a key safe, and whether it has been attack-tested and certified by a reputable certifying authority. The next consideration is its digital capabilities. Can access be granted and revoked quickly and remotely? What are the reporting capabilities? Are they automatic, or does the data have to be uploaded from each key safe manually? What’s the scope of digital management? Is there a limit on the number of key safes that can managed through the same account?

DECISION MAKING

In summary, whichever key management method is deployed by any organisation, the following must be considered: security of both keys and personnel, speed of access for alarms and emergencies, as well as the initial or service cost plus subsequent expenses. Businesses must also assess the level of access tracking and reporting capabilities provided by each method to ensure that keyholding arrangements do not compromise security.

WHILE KEYS ARE STORED AT A SECURE LOCATION OFFSITE, AUDITED REGULARLY AND TRANSPORTED IN KEY LOCKERS DURING SECURITY PATROLS, THEY CAN STILL BE LOST AND MISPLACED

Security life with Chris Jepson of Ocular Integration

WHAT ARE YOUR COMPANY’S MAIN BUSINESS ACTIVITIES?

Ocular is an independent security systems integrator, specialising in delivering solutions for high-security, public space, transport, and infrastructure projects throughout the UK and Ireland.

That’s really the ‘brochure’ answer to the question, I guess. In more simple terms, we are problem solvers. Ones with a deep understanding of the sectors we serve - from the operational requirements customers have, to specific regulatory demands they must comply with. Leveraging over four decades of experience, close partnerships with a vast range of technology providers, and an amazing team of engineers, we deliver integrated security solutions tailored to each customer’s specific needs. Helping them keep people and assets safe.

Servicing these solutions, ensuring customers have 24/7 support, 365 days of the year is also a huge part of what we do. In fact, I’d say our commitment to this is one of the main reasons for our longevity in the industry, and why we continue to flourish. Our main business activity, in this respect, is building trust. Making sure customers know they will always have exactly what they need, when they need it.

WHAT EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY, AND HOW IS YOUR COMPANY ADAPTING TO STAY AHEAD?

Technology is evolving at a ferocious pace. What’s particularly interesting, however, is that that some of the most impactful developments in our sector are not fundamentally security focussed.

For example, while there have been clear advances in security specific AI applications – especially in relation to biometric-based access control and video analytics, it’s cloud technology in general that is enabling easier and more widespread adoption of these kinds of solutions. It’s also what’s unlocking new ways of working. The ability for multiple organisations to share security system capabilities, footage, and evidence, for instance.

The way we stay ahead of the curve with these emerging technologies is to work incredibly closely with technology providers at every stage in the product development life cycle. We meet with our partners to understand their product pipelines and to feed into the process by passing on details of the key challenges and pain points our customers need technology to address.

Another way we have adapted is to ensure our recruitment process matches the direction of travel for technology. We have built a team, and will continue to do so, with the skillset necessary to advise on and implement cutting-edge equipment and systems.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES NSI CERTIFICATION DIFFERENTIATE YOUR COMPANY FROM COMPETITORS AND ENHANCE YOUR CREDIBILITY WITHIN THE INDUSTRY?

One thing I’m particularly proud of is the fact that we have held NSI Gold certification for such a long time. Many, many years. I think it shows this is not a ‘tick box’ exercise for us but rather an engrained commitment to consistent quality. The systems we have in place are continually audited to ensure every aspect of the service we provide meets incredibly high standards.

This constant review also means we don’t become complacent – we keep looking at ways we can improve. I think that’s important. You can’t stand still in this industry.

HOW HAS THE RISE OF SMART/ HOME AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY INFLUENCED YOUR BUSINESS AND THE SERVICES YOU OFFER?

We don’t serve the residential market. But what I would say is that the sheer scale of this market has massively accelerated the development of IoT solutions that now have distinct applications in a whole

host of settings. Many of the cloud-based surveillance and security solutions that we now regularly deploy use IoT protocols that can be traced back to ‘smart home’ origins.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION OR MYTH ABOUT THE SECURITY INDUSTRY?

When people ask me what I do, by far the most common response is “ah, so you install CCTV”. I completely understand the assumption, and it doesn’t bother me at all, but I’m sure many in our industry will agree that this is just such an oversimplification.

Yes, surveillance sits at the heart of what we do. But so does network design. Software development. Enterprise scale project management. When you are integrating a solution, for example, that spans entire cities - allowing council teams, police, and other third-party stakeholders to access and operate shared resourcesthat’s an incredibly complex process.

“OUR MAIN BUSINESS ACTIVITY IS BUILDING TRUST. MAKING SURE CUSTOMERS KNOW THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED, WHEN THEY NEED IT”

Meet the NSI installer

What’s more, I’d suggest that the security industry employs some of the most advanced tech out there. Certainly when it comes to AI. I think we are incredibly lucky in this respect, as we really do get to be at the forefront of some cutting-edge developments.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT WORKING IN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY?

This is going to sound rather corny. Sorry! But I’d say it’s the fact that we are ultimately making a real difference to society. The systems we integrate keep people safe. In some cases, they save lives. Sometimes it’s important to take a step back and think about that for a moment. It’s very motivating.

I will sometimes see a Premier League football game on TV and think, people in that stadium are safer because of work we’ve done. Or I might be down in London for a meeting, and walk through the streets thinking about the security solutions I know are working behind the scenes to protect everyone around me –from commuters riding the bus to work, to tourists taking in the sights.

When you’re in the middle of a complex project – whether it’s a stadium, local

authority, transport operator, nuclear power plant, or any other organisation critical to national infrastructure – it’s easy to forget the bigger picture. But it really is pretty special what we get a chance to do. When you think about it.

HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY APPROACH THE INTEGRATION OF SECURITY SYSTEMS WITH OTHER BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS IOT AND CLOUD-BASED PLATFORMS?

Our approach here is pretty much the same as our approach to effective systems integration in general - make it about the customer. How? By understanding the specific objectives in play, the systems and devices already in place, and by working with a board range of technology partners so that we can advise on the best solution to match these circumstances. One-sizefits-all has never been a principle we agree with, and it certainly isn’t one that suits projects involving IoT and cloud platform integration.

I also think that with cloud-based platforms in particular, there is an important role we can play in helping customers understand the opportunities that exist and the kind of ROI they can

“I WILL SOMETIMES SEE A PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL GAME ON TV AND THINK, PEOPLE IN THAT STADIUM ARE SAFER BECAUSE OF WORK WE’VE DONE”

expect. For example, the time saved by using secure instant video evidence access, or the potential operational efficiencies unlocked by enabling multiple organisations to share systems and intelligence.

HOW IS YOUR COMPANY PROACTIVELY PREPARING ITS CUSTOMERS FOR THE UPCOMING PSTN SWITCHOVER TO ALL-IP, AND WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING TO ENSURE A SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR THEM?

I’m very pleased to be able to say that we’ve transitioned all our customers already. We’re all set!

IN LIGHT OF THE CHALLENGE THE INDUSTRY IS FACING IN ATTRACTING SKILLED ENGINEERS, WHAT STRATEGIES OR INITIATIVES DO YOU BELIEVE ARE MOST EFFECTIVE IN ADDRESSING THIS SHORTAGE?

The skillsets that security system engineers need has definitely evolved. It’s now much more IT focussed. This naturally leads to a smaller pool of candidates with the right qualifications who are all in very high demand.

Our approach has therefore been to demonstrate to potential (and existing!) employees that we are a perfect home for engineers with these skills. Both in terms of the types of projects we work on, and in relation to how we treat our team.

Chris with Louise Wilks - HR Business Partner, Colin Butlin - Operations Director, Mark Pennington - Commercial and Technical Director and Nicola Kolasa - Finance Director

We regularly benchmark salaries and benefit packages to stay competitive – we have a benefits portal where our teams can enjoy exclusive savings and even source an electric vehicle at extremely competitive rates, for instance. As a business that provides 24/7 support all year round, we also make sure call-out expectations are fair to safeguard work/life balance for our engineers. None of this is rocket science of course, but it all adds up to building an environment that appeals.

CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE SUCCESS STORY OR CLIENT TESTIMONIAL THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPACT OF YOUR COMPANY’S SERVICES ON ENHANCING SAFETY AND SECURITY?

This is a really tough question as the range of sectors we serve means projects are often memorable for different reasons. Success can come in the form of ensuring a national museum is chosen for a high profile touring exhibit due to the security systems in place, or helping a bus operator cut their ‘false claim’ insurance payouts by thousands of pounds.

But the one success story that really sticks in my mind is a missing persons case that happened a few years back – that of a young girl. Sadly, the case in question ended up being a murder investigation. A particularly challenging one due to the fact a body was never found. We worked closely

“HAVING JUST REBRANDED FROM BEING SYNECTICS SECURITY, AND WITH SOME REALLY INTERESTING PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE, THIS IS SUCH AS EXCITING TIME TO BE IN THE BUSINESS”

with police to help them piece together footage from a range of vehicle and public space cameras, to gain a complete picture of the suspect’s movements. The timeline established was in direct conflict with the accused’s version of events, and as such was key to securing a conviction.

The best security technology in the world will never put a stop to all crime. I wish it could. But knowing that it can make sure justice is done. As it was in this case. That’s a satisfying thought.

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BEST BUSINESS DECISIONS YOU HAVE EVER MADE?

My answer has to be deciding to accept the role of MD at Ocular. Having just rebranded from being Synectics Security, and with some really interesting projects in the pipeline, this is such as exciting time to be in the business, let alone to be leading it forward!

Having been with the company for about 18 years now, it’s also really rewarding to look back and know that, yeah, we were right to trust our vision for the future. We saw where technology was

heading; and the kind of set-up we’d need to keep thriving. And now, that’s exactly what we are doing. I think the new name actually is pretty fitting in this respect, as we’ve always had this innate ability to focus on future needs to the benefit of our customers. I’m incredibly proud to be entrusted with seeing where our vision with take us next!

IF YOUR STAFF WERE ASKED WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY GREAT TO WORK FOR, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE MAJORITY WOULD SAY?

I think our team would say that their colleagues are what makes this place great. I’ve talked a lot about the weight we put in building lasting relationship with customers and with technology partners. But that wouldn’t be possible without putting equal emphasis on the internal relationships we forge too. Everyone who works here knows that they are part of a super talented team, and that they can rely on their colleagues to get the job done. When you’ve got that kind of trust in your corner, you really can take on anything.

PROTECTING YOUR LIVELIHOOD

Mark Gilbert of Alarminsure talks to PSi and reveals five ways security installers can combat tool theft

Recent news from Kent Police highlights the growing issue of tool theft in the UK. Back in 2022, the On the Tools website published a report shedding light on the grim reality of tool theft revealing:

• 78% of tradespeople had their tools stolen

• 94% of stolen tools are never fully recovered

• Most tradespeople lost between £1,000 and £5,000 in a single incident

• 68% worry about tool theft daily

• 81% of those who reported the crime to police were unsatisfied with the response

The recovery of over 3,500 tools worth more than £1 million serves as a stark reminder of the scale of this problem. For security installers, whose livelihoods depend on their equipment, this threat is particularly concerning.

WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR TOOLS

While this recovery is a win for law enforcement, it also underscores the need for tradespeople to take proactive measures to protect their assets. Here are five effective ways electrical and security installers can reduce the risk of tool theft: Invest in GPS tracking devices - The Kent Police discovery was made possible thanks to a victim who had attached trackers to their tools. This smart move not only led to the recovery of their

property but also uncovered a massive cache of stolen goods. Consider investing in small, discreet GPS trackers for your most valuable tools. These devices can be invaluable in recovering stolen equipment and potentially leading to larger recoveries.

Implement robust van security - With 37% of tool thefts occurring from vehicles, enhancing van security is crucial. Install high-quality locks, visible security systems, and consider adding CCTV to your van. These measures can deter opportunistic thieves and make your vehicle a less attractive target.

Asset management systems - This technology allows you to track your tools in real-time, making it easier to manage your inventory and quickly identify any missing items. Some systems even offer features to help locate lost or stolen equipment.

Mark and register tools - Permanently mark tools with your company name or a unique identifier. This makes them less attractive to thieves and easier to recover if stolen. Additionally, register your tools with schemes like Immobilise,

the UK’s national property register, which can help police return recovered items to their rightful owners. Recording the serial numbers, receipts or even colour of tools can help, not only if you need to make a claim but also if the tools are retrieved. Insure your tools - It’s important to make sure everything you have at your premises or on site is covered by your insurance, and that you pick a policy that will cover the full value of your equipment. For example, we recommend a policy which provides ‘new for old’ replacements for tools and goods that are damaged or stolen.

While the recent recovery in Kent is encouraging, it’s clear that tool theft remains a significant issue for tradespeople across the UK. By implementing these strategies, security installers can better protect their valuable assets and, by extension, their livelihoods

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY TOOLS WITH INSURANCE?

When you’re working on-site, tool insurance offers the protection with replacements or repairs to your equipment. If your tools are stolen it can be a major headache. We know that your tools are vital to your business, and it can be costly to replace. But without them,

your business can grind to a halt, leaving customers disappointed and damaging your reputation.

Make sure you are also aware what is not usually insured as part of your tools cover, to avoid any nasty surprises. Tool cover usually excludes phones, sat navs, personal belongings, wear and tear to tools and faulty tools otherwise covered by warranty or manufacturers guarantee.

KNOW THE VALUE OF TOOLS

If your tools are stolen and need to make a claim, you will need to know the value

MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE AT YOUR PREMISES OR ON SITE IS COVERED BY YOUR INSURANCE, AND THAT YOU PICK A POLICY THAT WILL COVER THE FULL VALUE OF YOUR EQUIPMENT

of the loss and provide details as part of your claim. While you might know what you paid for each it’s important to know their value at the time of theft, i.e. how much it would cost to replace the tools and equipment.

It is important for you to do regular

audits (stock take), whether you have hundreds of tools and equipment or just a few, by regularly auditing your tools and equipment, this will help you keep apace of how much they cost to replace and spot anything that might have gone missing.

This is why record keeping is also important, this can include serial numbers, a list of items and photos to build a record of what you’ve got, in case the worst happens, and you need to make a claim.

Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Stay vigilant, secure your tools, and report any suspicious activity to the police.

EASY WAYS TO UPSELL

Upselling can significantly increase the profits of a security installation business. Here, we list seven methods to achieve easy upselling, courtesy of Hanwha Vision

Long gone are the days of choosing a security installer for a single installation and then moving on. Today’s security leaders are choosing installers based on the long-term value and strategic partnership they can offer. The best installers remain on top of new trends and developments — and advise their customers accordingly. In doing so, they create many opportunities to upsell new solutions to improve their customer’s operations.

Upselling describes an approach in which a supplier makes their customer aware of a superior version of a product, while cross-selling is when a complementary product to those a customer has purchased is proposed.

Upselling and cross-selling can significantly increase a customer’s lifetime value - how much revenue they generate over their time with a supplier - by 20-40%, according to research. It helps customers find more value from your firm and, in turn, boosts your bottom line.

Here are seven easy ways to upsell and cross-sell to your customers:

EASY AI UPGRADES

AI is becoming a “must have” and customers are seeking easy ways

Investing in an intercom that integrates with a video management system and includes a camera, such as the TID-600R, means operators can benefit from an additional camera channel plus an access control and help point solution. The compact size of a combined intercom and camera system also suits a multitude of installations.

IMPROVE SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Sites often start with a simple security system that consists of a handful of cameras and a network video recorder. Over time they will invariably grow; at this point, there is an opportunity to upsell a video management system (VMS) such as Wisenet Wave, that consolidates data streams and system management in a single place. An open VMS also offers futureproofing and flexibility to add more devices as needs evolve.

Likewise, if a customer’s annual software licence costs are up for renewal, it is worth considering the benefits of using Wave as there are no yearly or intermittent upgrade costs.

LONG-TERM LOYALTY

The moment you complete an installation

is just the start of a customer journey with your organisation. Thanks to advances in video surveillance and connected devices, there are many opportunities to continue building a relationship with your customers and to uncover new installations and features that can help your customers reach their goals. From implementing AI for higher efficiency and reduced false alarms, to unifying surveillance systems and bolstering architecture, your customers will need your guidance to decide on the best security solution for them.

APPLICATIONS

ENHANCING SECURITY AND CONVENIENCE

BEAU VIE II is a student apartment block located at Banghoek Road, Cape Town. It opened in early 2024 and provides students with modern and convenient accommodation.

Patron Capital SA, responsible for the development of the student accommodation, worked with installer Remote Entry Systems, who specified Paxton’s product range to secure the facility. The requirements for the Beau Vie II building included biometric readers to increase building security through verifying users via fingerprint or facial recognition and also IP cameras to ensure real-time video access and footage capture, and an intercom system to allow ease of visitor access.

Morné Mellet, Technical Systems Specialist at Remote Entry Systems, presented five security installation designs to Patron, which included Paxton’s Net2 and Paxton10 systems. Patron chose Paxton10 due to its web-based software that allows for remote management and the ability for users to use their smart devices to gain access through doors.

ENHANCING CITY SAFETY AND TRAFFIC CONTROL

PROTECTING THE citizens and visitors of Ceské Budejovice, Czech Republic on the roads is important, both for strengthening the tourist attractiveness of the city and for ensuring smooth travel. The city was awarded a tender for the installation of a traffic system with more than 170 cameras to protect road users and pedestrians.

The suppliers of the contract were Swarco Traffic Cz and Telmo having proposed a solution in cooperation with distributor, Abbas. This solution included cameras from Hanwha Vision, combined with a video management system (VMS) by Genetec and an automatic incident detection and traffic collection system from the Italian technology company, Sprinx. The solution provides continuous recording and analysis of major roads in the city.

Morné said: “In addition to Paxton10’s features meeting the requirements per Beau Vie II, the cabling and labour costs required for installing and configuring Paxton products were lower than the other brands, helping to reduce the overall project costs for the client.”

An add-on benefit of choosing Paxton10 for this building is that it is fully compatible with the other product ranges that the manufacturer offers, including Paxton10 cameras, video intercom system, Entry, and smart door handle, PaxLock.

Paxton10 readers are installed on doors in the car park and communal areas in the building, and wireless door handles PaxLock are installed on each apartment unit door.

Mackenzie Johnson, Managing Director at Patron Capital SA, said: “Paxton 10 has significantly enhanced the security and convenience for residents at Beau Vie II. The system’s features provide comprehensive surveillance and streamlined access management, ensuring that the apartment complex remains secure and well-monitored. Additionally,

the intercom system at the apartment’s front doors has been very well received by the occupants, who appreciate the ease of use and added layer of security it provides.”

Camera models include the X series cameras - XNO-6080R, XNO-6120R, XNP-6400R and XNO-6123R, the PNBA9001LP 4K RoadAI camera, the multisensor camera PNM-9031RV, and the PNO-A9081R 4K AI bullet camera.

AI-powered features enable better situational awareness, supporting faster responses to emergencies such as accidents or stopped vehicles, evidence

for investigations, and detailed insights for future city planning. This includes vehicle counting and classification, which can be used to inform road management and parking. Meanwhile, the detection of stopped vehicles and congestion means that operators can take appropriate action when necessary, such as opening new routes and rerouting vehicles to keep traffic flowing in the city.

Raffaele Russo, Founder of Loc8me commented: “For a lot of students, moving into a student home is a huge step in their independence and we want to make sure we offer the best environment for them.

“Working with Charnwood Lock & Key enabled us to embrace Mul-T-Lock as a master key suite we could rely on. We have one set for each of our property developments and our associated landlords, ensuring we can maintain overall security, whilst balancing necessary access for our maintenance teams to ensure our homes are kept to a high standard.”

RETAIL GATES MANAGE FLOW AT UNIVERSITY OF KENT

GUNNEBO ENTRANCE Control has completed the installation of retail gates at the University of Kent, enhancing security and efficiently managing people flow in the university’s retail areas. The installation included one powered retail gate, one manual gate, and associated barrier work.

The process began with a site inspection and assessment to tailor the installation due to underfloor heating being present within the area. In line with health and safety requirements, the gates were then securely mounted on plinths, with barriers installed to guide foot traffic seamlessly.

One of the key challenges addressed during the installation was the integration of the automated gates with the fire alarm system, to ensure automatic opening in the event of emergencies, aligning with safety regulations.
