SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the June issue of Benchmark Magazine

It seems that summer is finally arriving - after a colder-than-usual springtime. Last year was the UK’s warmest on record, and the heatwave disrupted transport, emergency services, power supplies and people’s health. The risk of hot summer in the UK is more than twice the average figure, according to a report in The Guardian newspaper.

Heat can have several effects on security systems, depending on the intensity and duration of exposure. Are you and your clients ready for it?

High temperatures can cause security cameras to overheat, especially if they are not designed to operate in extreme heat conditions. Overheating can lead to malfunctioning or even permanent damage to the camera’s internal components, such as the image sensor, lens, or circuitry.

Many security cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs for night vision. However, heat can affect the performance of these IR illuminators. High temperatures can reduce the range and effectiveness of the IR illumination, limiting the camera’s ability to capture clear images in low-light conditions.

June 2023

Heat can affect the image quality captured by security cameras. Excessive heat can cause the image sensor to produce noise, resulting in blurry or distorted images. Heat can also generate colour shifts, where the colours in the captured footage may appear inaccurate or washed out.

Issues with the mounting and housing of the cameras can also arise in extreme heat; metal components may expand, causing misalignment or even structural damage. Plastic housings may warp or become brittle, compromising the camera’s physical integrity and protection against environmental factors.

To mitigate the impact of heat on security cameras, it is crucial to choose cameras specifically designed to operate in hightemperature environments if heat exposure is expected. Additionally, proper camera placement, adequate ventilation, and protective housing or enclosures can help minimise the effects of heat on security camera systems. Regular maintenance and monitoring of temperature levels are also essential to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Hikvision unveils the eDVR Series.

Hikvision has launched a new eco-friendly digital video recorder, the eDVR Series. Designed to provide reliable and efficient video recording and management solutions for various security applications, it requires half the energy consumption compared to a conventional DVR, and it’s small enough to be held in the palm of the hand.

Hikvision’s eDVR Series offers highdefinition video recording capabilities, allowing users to capture clear, detailed footage. A solid-state drive in the system delivers high-performance storage for video monitoring applications. As a result, no HDD installation is required, and the DVR performs better with extended capacity – saving users money and time. This also means its physical structure is more stable and durable, even in extreme operating conditions. The eSSD’s robustness has been confirmed by JEDEC (Global Standards for the Microelectronics Industry) through stress testing equivalent to a minimum of 10 years of use.

Hikvision’s Scene-Adaptive Bitrate Control technology predicts the amount of storage an eDVR will consume. eDVRs accurately allocate a higher bitrate based on the complexity of a scene when they analyse a high-complexity scene. The bitrate will be much lower in a scene without moving objects or with few moving objects. This allows a 20% improvement in the

Security users turn their backs on unethical brands

According to research commissioned by Hanwha Vision, nearly three-quarters of (73%) European Security Managers believe it is important to source their cameras from manufacturers that uphold the responsible use of security technology, while more than 8 in 10 (81%) of UK security managers believe that surveillance technology, such as video cameras, should be used responsibly.

The survey of over 600 Security Managers from medium to large organisations in the UK, Netherlands, Italy, Germany and France was conducted by Research Without Barriers for South Korean video provider Hanwha Vision in December 2022.

“Just as we have seen in consumer technology markets, commercial video camera users are looking for more than low cost: they want to partner with brands that put responsible use, data security and ethical manufacture at their core,” says Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing of Hanwha Vision Europe.

UK authorities have warned of the risks associated with using certain manufacturers’

Facit Data helps King’s College Hospital to comply with DSAR

King’s College Hospital recently decided to use FacitData’s Identity Cloak redaction software to assist in managing the video data subject access requests (DSARs) received from patients. The healthcare sector has seen a steady increase in DSARs.

King’s College Hospital is one of London’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals. With its progressive approach, the

hospital was keen on completing all DSARs and complying with the policies and procedures for protecting personal data without depleting valuable budgets or wasting expert resources on tedious administrative tasks to remain current. The hospital chose FacitData’s Identity Cloak as its redaction tool.

Ian Taylor, Head of Security, highlights the fact that “the application sits within our own network, which ensures that the Trust’s video never leaves our own secure environment, rather than having to place our video in the Cloud, which was an issue here at the Trust.”

He added: “The multi-mode options give us flexibility and enable us to ensure that we provide the correct video output for each

Smooth events at Stade des Alpes with Hanwha Vision

The Stade des Alpes team needed to update its existing system and bring it up to date with the requirements of the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel). In particular, there was a need to monitor sensitive areas with high footfall, namely entry and exit points, routes up to the stands, refreshment areas, and the stands themselves. The new video system needed to deliver clear and accurate images back to operators to help protect visitors, players, and officials during match days and other events.

The Stade des Alpes is a rugby and football stadium in Grenoble, France, with over 20,000 seats. It hosts two resident professional clubs, Grenoble Foot 38 and the FC Grenoble rugby club, and conventions, gala dinners, exhibitions, and concerts.
