EDITORIAL
The launch pad It’s always interesting at this time of year to see the information coming in regarding the new launches that are in the pipeline for IFSEC and Firex. This year it looks like there’s a bit of ‘me too’ and some ‘me first’ going on… ver the last year or so, the security industry has really taken on the possibilities that working over a network can bring to the table. Not only do we have IP CCTV but many aspects of access control, visitor management, intruder alarms, fire protection and other disciplines embracing the features and benefits of a network. This is why for the previous few IFSEC events we have seen a rise in the development and launch of new IP-based systems all seemingly following the same path and leading the industry into networking. This year, we again expected that there would be a host of new IP products on show (and there certainly will be judging by the pre-event promo material) with analogue taking a seat in the background. There will be new analogue products at the show, but the marketing material from the manufacturers will lean heavily towards their IP offerings. When asked recently what I thought would be the main thrust of the event I predicted that the adoption of tablets and smartphones would see vendors going big on remote maintenance, set-up and monitoring at IFSEC. And I still believe this will be the case (at the time of writing it is currently three weeks until the show opens) as for many companies the combination of a smartphone and the IP-enabled security system cannot be ignored as a potential source of revenue. In fact take a look at one system reviewed later in this edition (page 57) in which our independent reviewers find the array of possible features and uses extremely impressive. Much like last year with the ‘apps’ being launched by just about everyone, this year those yet to add remote functionality to their technology will do so. However this may well not turn out to be the story of the event as it appears that HD is just not good enough for some people. The security industry is becoming increasingly a part of the consumer market. As discussed, smartphones and tablets are now commonplace in the field and the image resolution of CCTV is following in the footsteps of our domestic technology. Therefore it is really no surprise that in an industry still yet to fully grasp the qualities of HD CCTV, there will be some 4K cameras launched at IFSEC in 2014. Some might say that this is one step too far/too soon and vendors should let the market try and catch up with technology before speeding ahead with new launches, but staying on top and being a pioneer are powerful images for a brand. Whether installers and their customers feel the same way about their security technology remains to be seen, but each new development brings new benefits and that is what security installers can sell. If 4K CCTV generates enough interest over the coming months, then this time next year you know what the ‘me too’ products will be at the event in 2015.

Fire expert saves the day When Lee Knight saw a lorry on fire as he drove down the motorway he knew he could help – because he is a Fire Extinguisher Manager and had a van full of equipment. Lee, who works for Wessex Fire & Security, spotted the flames coming out of a skip on the back of the lorry on the M3 near Fleet in Hampshire. Another motorist flagged down the lorry and Lee pulled in afterwards. The lorry driver had no extinguisher and was desperately trying to move the skip off his vehicle before the blaze got out of hand and spread. Luckily for him Lee knew exactly what to do and he quickly grabbed three extinguishers from his van and leapt into action. Together with the driver he was able to use the foam extinguishers to completely extinguish the blaze. Indeed, there was no need for the fire brigade to attend and a certain disaster was averted. Incredibly it is the fourth time that Lee has come to the rescue on the roads to put out fires in vehicles.
Lee said: “I was coming south along the M3 just before the Fleet turn off when I saw a skip lorry in front of me. One of the skips was on fire and smoke was pouring from it, but the driver hadn’t noticed. A car drove past and signalled to him and I think the driver just thought that some debris had fallen off. When he pulled over and saw the flames he got into a bit of a panic and started trying to get the skip off the back of the lorry. I had about a dozen full extinguishers in the back of the van, but we only needed three to put out the fire. I don’t know how the fire started but it might have been that someone had thrown a cigarette into it and it gradually ignited the material in the skip. It just shows the benefit of having an extinguisher handy!”

First Annual Report for Euralarm Euralarm has released its first Annual Report. The report covers the activities of Euralarm during the last year and gives an outlook on the future activities. All articles revolve around the slogan: ‘Key to a safe and secure future’. During the past two years, Euralarm has extended its purely regulatory activities, to lobbying and communication in Europe and worldwide. The outlook and priorities for the future are discussed by Marc Chabaud, president of the organisation. In addition to the strategic remarks of the president, every section and technical committee summarises their activities in the previous year and provides their forecasts and plans for the upcoming years. There is a focus on integration within the security industry, the need for domestic fire safety and the effort to raise awareness of necessary skills. Furthermore, there is an in-depth description of the PEARS project, which is currently one of the major projects of Euralarm. The report is completed with an introduction of the Board members, the General Management as well as a list of the members. The Annual Report 2013/2014 was presented during the General Assembly of Euralarm in Juan les Pins (France).
ComNet expands in the UK ComNet Europe, a division of ComNet Communication Networks, has expanded operations in the UK, doubling office and warehouse space in order to meet product demand. Due to the surge in demand for fibre optic, copper and wireless transmission products throughout EMEA, Asia-Pacific and South America, the Leeds-based company has expanded by taking on an additional 3050 square feet to support its efforts. The additional space will be used for warehousing products, tech support and administration. ComNet recently added new warehouse and administration employees to support the additional product volume the company expects to move through the facility. “When we started ComNet in 2009, we were aggressive in planning our facility needs. We thought the office and warehouse space we secured would last us for a long time,” stated Steve Clarke, ComNet Europe Managing Director. “The demand for transmission products led us to a very high level of growth and the facility became too small, quickly. As a result, when the additional 3050 square feet became available, we took it. The additional space will be used to warehouse more product to speed up delivery times.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Colin Langdown, Managing Director of Christie Intruder Alarms. The family-run business is one of the largest independent security systems installers in the UK. As strong advocates for apprentices, what advice would you offer to companies sceptical of this approach? Think about where your business might be if you hadn’t invested in your future. Taking on apprentices is the same investment but with even greater returns. By carefully selecting, training and moulding young stars of the future, you can steer them away from the bad habits and working practices that might get picked-up in other organisations. It is how we have maintained CIA’s culture of service excellence over all these years. You have your own research department, how do your customers benefit from that investment? We offer our customers the very best in security products and services and that means keeping up-to-date. But there is a difference between innovation and being on the ‘bleeding edge’ of technology. Too many companies start using the latest gadget only to discover problems after they have fitted the first fifty. However, if you find the right product and become one of the pioneers, you will set yourself up to be a leader and expert in a very competitive market. After all Simon it was you and I that fitted the very first DualCom back in 1996! As one of the UK’s largest regional installers, what has kept you at the top for almost four decades? There are three groups of people that we never take for granted, our employees, our suppliers and our customers. Our greatest asset is the team we have at CIA and I am so proud to work with each and every one. Building long term relationships with suppliers, paying them on time and collaborating on new ideas means they will always look after us when we need their support. Finally, never underestimate the importance of excellent customer service. We always go that extra mile! Does your choice of products help to sustain the profit margin within your business? A product that repeatedly fails will mean you either lose your profit or lose your customer! Selecting the right product will give you the chance to be more profitable on the installation but also gain valuable recurring revenue streams and repeat business. Most importantly it’s not just about the product itself, but the company behind it. What do you predict will be the next ‘big thing’ in security and why? We are in the security industry so the last thing I want is for someone to steal our ideas! It’s not about what we install but the skill set of the person installing it. Therefore I do have a word of caution. With the proliferation of IP within the industry, do IT Professionals really have the skills and experience to secure a building? Secondly, do Security Professionals have the skills to install IP ready equipment?

INTERVIEW
ACHIEVING AN ROI WITH IP This month we talk to Gary Harmer of Mayflex about growing the security side of the business and how installers can introduce customers to networking their technology ary Harmer is the Director of Sales for Electronic Security at Mayflex. He has many years’ experience in the security industry having spent over 20 years at another security distributor prior to joining Mayflex in January 2011. Gary is also a Liveryman in The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals.
G
How have the last twelve months been for you? We’ve had a strong performance over the last year for all of the areas of our business; cabling, networking and security. In the security sector we have grown our year-on-year turnover significantly, largely due to a combination of factors such as continued investment and bringing on-board new brands -we have now had a full year of working with Avigilon and last summer we launched a new brand called Razberi. Having said that about new brands we’re continuing our development with existing vendor partners such as Axis, Milestone, Mobotix etc and this shows the market that we are not pushing one brand over another, which I also think helps improve the business performance. Another important factor is the fact that we do not have any own-brand technology which is an attraction to installers because they know they will get an unbiased opinion from us as we don’t have a product to push at them that we can get a higher margin from. This also makes us an attractive option for brands that want to reach the security market via a distributor. How has the growing move into IP affected your business? We still have two customer bases, but they are gradually converging into a single set. In the structured cabling and networking side we have the IT-ready communications companies that understand IP, networking, addressing, configuration etc and are moving
www.psimagazine.co.uk
into the security sector whereas traditionally they stayed away from the market as it was entirely analogue 1volt peak-to-peak on coax. Today much of the security equipment is network-based and they understand that concept, although they do need some help sometimes with system design and product selection. Our history in structured cabling provides the perfect foundation for an IP based security solution. The other half of the customer base is the traditional security installers who are migrating from analogue into IP, making that transition and looking for a partner to help them. Our biggest challenge, as an industry, is the education of installers and end-users on the benefits of IP and how to make a cost-efficient transition. There are some who think that IP is too expensive, but if you look at it closely, you can put together a return on investment package, which we have done on a number of occasions. For example, by taking large analogue-based perimeter protection designs and re-engineering them to an IP solution, it can save the installer money on the project. How long has the company been operating in the security market? We have had a security offering for the last eight years, borne on the back of Mobotix appointing us as their distributor for the UK. The market grew for us, with the additions of Panasonic, Bosch and Sanyo, so we recognised that for us to take the next step and develop our service it needed security industry people to come on board. Around four years ago the decision was made to invest in the sector and bring in the kinds of people with the experience that was required. I do feel that because we have a background in networking that it helps us deal with those installers who are looking to move into the security sector. One of the most common pieces of feedback we get from customers is that they chose us because of the associated products we have as well as our in-house expertise. We have a well-established network support team which is a bonus for those installers who are not experienced with IP technology. To further aid the transition we will continue to lay on free-toattend seminars and training such as our “IP

INTERVIEW
CCTV made easy” programmes all of which are possible because we have that background in networked technology. Are there any common areas of confusion for installers? There are two points that are raised quite regularly. First is how to get a return on investment with IP. There is a traditional feeling that IP is more expensive than analogue because on a camera-for-camera basis it generally is, but it is not until you start to consider what else you can do with a network camera that IP really shows its value. The use of video analytics for example will provide much more information to a business than security and more installers are using this angle to engage with their clients, often seeing budgets being brought in from marketing and branding departments for the project as the benefits go beyond security purposes. The other main area that we see trending among installers is the need for upskilling their workforce. This comes down to us helping them train their staff with vendor-sponsored programmes and generic training. Installers need to invest in their business and so improved knowledge opens up new areas of opportunity for them in the market. For example, a real concern for people making the transition into IP is the awareness surrounding licensing. One half of our customer base, which is the IT/comms people, expects any software product they use to be licensed and expect an annual maintenance/support package to be applied, but in the world of analogue CCTV this thinking does not exist. The traditional security installer needs to understand the licensed model and the accreditation programmes that manufacturers put in place to ensure that properly qualified people are installing their brand.
“I don’t see a lot of money going into the research and development of analogue equipment” 14
Where are the growth opportunities for security installers? There are a number of areas for growth. Firstly the licensed model gives the installer the opportunity for recurring revenue which, in today’s climate, has to be an attractive proposition. Some end-users recognise the value of this service; being kept up-to-date with software and features/benefits etc. For the installer to go back to the client with a renewable service that offers the latest deployment is an added-value benefit for
customers. If you gradually build up your customer base and have recurring revenue coming in over a period of time you have a guaranteed income before going out on any new work. Another area of growth comes in the form of additional services on top of video, such as analytics which provides powerful information to businesses that they can use. One example is retailers being able to use footfall analysis to sell shelf space in busy locations. What will the security market look like in the future? I think analogue technology will be around for a number of years yet. However, most of the manufacturers are no longer developing new product lines in analogue, maybe just tweaking the cameras and systems they have, but I don’t see a lot of money going into the research and development of analogue equipment. The money is all being spent on IP system development, making the technology easier to use and deploy and also more cost-effective. In five years’ time I think we will still have analogue CCTV systems out there, but looking at the phenomenal pace of change of the last three/four years there is no doubt that we have reached a tipping point. Most manufacturers in the market say that they are selling more IP than analogue and we are seeing the same rate of growth in the number of new sign-ups we are getting. People are moving towards networked systems in various ways. The encoder market is huge and we sell a lot of those into the market each month and part of the education process is that you don’t have to rip out all of the existing system to enable it for IP; you can use the current assets and get a decent return on that investment. The classic example is when a DVR fails, rather than replacing it with a DVR, replace it with an NVR and use some encoders to bring the analogue cameras into a network platform and this makes the system future-ready for IP. We find that the smarter installers that are following this route will also install a few 2MP or 1080P cameras and the end-user then finds some extra money to upgrade the system because they see the difference in picture quality. You don’t have to go in ‘all guns blazing’ to introduce customers to IP security.

EDITOR’S CHOICE
EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
Shock detection for perimeter protection ShockTec from Risco is a digital shock detector for 24-hour perimeter protection. A break-in is detected as soon as the intruder attempts to force, smash, drill or even saw through the protected window, door, wall or roof due to a digital microprocessor which analyses the vibration signal received from the piezo electric sensor. A feature of ShockTec 600S is its digital sampling of the signal simultaneously in two separate channels, each channel amplified at a different gain. This provides a wide dynamic range of the sampled signal, enabling precise measurement and analysis of the shock signal. For increased accuracy, digital signal processing differentiates between naturally caused vibrations and cuts out frequencies that cannot be caused by an illegal entry attempt. www.riscogroup.com

Honeywell has added hybrid network video recorders (NVRs) to its MAXPRO portfolio of high-definition IP video technology, and has also introduced HVE video/audio encoders that reportedly allow installers to easily transition their customers’ analogue cameras to IP. The hybrid NVRs convert analogue feeds to IP without replacing analogue cameras, which is ideal for smaller installations that want to keep their existing analogue cameras while adding HD IP video to their systems. When installed with an existing NVR, the HVE encoders transition the NVR to a hybrid model that supports a mix of analogue and HD IP video. MAXPRO NVR Hybrid supports simultaneous recording and live monitoring for up to 32 cameras and is compliant with the ONVIF Profile S protocol that enables system customisation. Additionally, 360-degree camera support increases situational awareness and improves coverage, and a video surround feature lets users track subjects as they move between areas covered by adjacent cameras. Customers can access the system remotely using Honeywell’s web client and MAXPRO Mobile application. The web client is supported from any standard Mac or PC browser and requires no additional install, provides the value of reduced setup, maintenance and improved compatibility. www.honeywell.com/security/uk

First aid alarm point module announced Bull Products has now introduced a combined first aid alert and call point alarm module for the Cygnus wireless fire alarm system. The first aid alert and call point alarm uses a single battery pack to work across the Cygnus wireless system with a category 1 radio frequency ensuring maximum range. The system has the capability of linking together 480 units in 15 different zones around a site with each then having the capacity to accommodate 32 units. When a first aid alert is raised, each first aid device will beep intermittently every 8 seconds, and a message is sent to the control panel to alert the first aider and can also trigger a paging system if required. The paging system is wired to the control panel which has a designated output and transmits alert messages to handheld devices carried by first aiders. Similarly, the call point function which is used to raise an alarm, activates all other devices around the entire site, these devices normally situated in prominent places such as main escape routes and fire points. It also has a sounder with an output of 120db and a beacon is incorporated on the face of the alarm for visual alert in excessively noisy areas where ear defenders are worn. www.bullproducts.co.uk

A DAY TO REMEMBER! This year the PSI Golf Day and Premier Awards is returning to Brocket Hall near Welwyn Garden City. Why not come and join us for the day on 17th July?
his year the PSI Golf Day and the Premier Awards return to Brocket Hall, one of the most intriguing of any of the great houses of Britain. With a rich and varied history, the scent of scandal can be found in the fabric of the building back to its roots in the 13th Century right up to the present day. Brocket Hall, as it is known today, was built by renowned architect James Paine for the owner Sir Mathew Lamb in 1760. However, the Hall stands on the site of two predecessors, the original of which was built in 1239. One thing that hasn’t changed over the centuries is the warm welcome that Brocket Hall has always extended to its visitors. In the 18th Century, the concept of hotels didn’t really exist and large houses were built not only for the family to live in, but also to give them give them facilities for meeting and entertaining. It is fitting that Brocket Hall today should once again be used for this original purpose, and a pleasure for us to offer such a remarkable venue to our friends and guests for the day. The Premier Awards Dinner will take place during the evening of 17th July, when we will announce who the winners are of the industry’s only Awards campaign based on the votes of security technology installers. Following the meal and presentations there will be after-dinner

entertainment and the chance to unwind in the luxurious surroundings of Brocket Hall. During the day, the annual PSI Golf Day will pit the skills of the industry’s golfers against each other. With two pristine championship golf courses, the renowned practice facilities of the Palmerston Golf Academy and a charmingly positioned luxury Clubhouse on the banks of the Broadwater Lake, Brocket Hall Golf Club is one of the UK’s most exclusive golf venues and a fantastic venue for our Golf Day. For those looking to stay overnight the Regency stately home boasts 30 luxurious double bedrooms, all of which are named after individuals who have either lived in or been closely associated with Brocket Hall. Its suites are decorated with period antiques, oil paintings and beautiful wallpaper. Providing breath-taking views across the country estate, the luxury accommodation retains a quintessentially British look and feel, while reaching modern standards, befitting Brocket Hall’s international reputation.
We hope you will be able to join us at Brocket Hall this year for a round of golf, awards dinner or both! For more details on taking part contact David Lewis on 0208 295 8309.

PANEL
SI is the magazine for security systems installers and it seems only fair that we offer you the chance to give your opinions to the market. As a result we have put together the Installer Panel, your platform for telling manufacturers, distributors and the wider industry what you think about certain subjects. This month the Panel looks at the question: What do you think will be the growth area for security installations over the next twelve months and how could manufacturers and distributors help you succeed in this field? Do you agree with your fellow installers? Let us know.
P
AREAS OF POTENTIAL
Gary Trotter – Hadrian Technology In the next twelve months, I think the growth areas within CCTV will be the integration of video analytics within IP CCTV. How CCTV footage can be analysed is becoming more and more important. News stories about the hours the police and authorities spend trawling through footage to find evidence crop up in the press again and again. The significance with IP video analytics is the ability for the end user to intelligently search recordings. For instance, once the end users understand the full benefit of video analytics, and how much time and cost can be saved through using such a tool, this may open the door to more people seeing this as a realistic option. Security managers, store managers, and loss prevention managers are just some of the people who are asked to trawl through CCTV footage on a regular basis. We need to teach these individuals and their employers about IP systems and video analytics. Work smart, not hard, applies to CCTV and these clever tools mean if you use CCTV correctly, it doesn’t have to be difficult. Another area of concern, I believe, needs to be addressed is the lack of SDK compliance between different manufacturers. I believe ONVIF compliance is still at a basic level. Too many times I have had manufacturers in my office to demonstrate kit, and too many times that kit has not been compatible with other manufacturer’s equipment. I would welcome the new standard of IP CCTV integration to be at an SDK level and this would allow installers to have the confidence to design and install systems without the fear of equipment not being compatible. Once installers have this confidence I believe IP CCTV and video analytics will

become more mainstream and allow prices to come down and become a realistic solution for end users with smaller budgets.
Matthew Harrison – CIA Fire and Security Wireless intruder alarms are without a doubt the greatest opportunity for growth in the sector over the coming months. Wireless technology in the intruder alarm sector is advancing at a considerable pace particularly now that so many legacy reliability issues have been or are in the process of being resolved. Above all else, manufacturers and suppliers can assist by pushing training across the board from sales to engineers. It will support the whole supply chain and be of huge benefit to the clients. Also, rather than the obvious suggestion to

offer at least graphical representations of the zoning of the system, double up as a CCTV monitor to show who is calling at the door and provide some user interface to operate a choice of toggled outputs. Styling is also going to become an issue. We recently installed a system in a luxury property and to say the white plastic keypad stood out as disappointing was an understatement. Secondly systems should start to inform the alarm installer of potential service related issues even prior to the customer becoming aware. This will allow the installers to become proactive in their response. Surprising and delighting the customer that we are looking out for their interests. These can include critical battery levels of all devices, especially wireless detectors, communication issues, set fails and similar. We are now in a consumer driven world whereby the pioneering, leading edge, cutting technology that we, the security industry, introduced nearly two decades ago such as upload/download is now the norm and nothing new. We are actually falling behind, unless we know the problem and come up with a solution before the customer is even aware of we are somehow fallen behind the rest of the world. Personally I see the introduction of several user interface choices becoming ever more popular. Firstly the choice of keypad style is key. Consumers are becoming ever more tablet driven and expect their tablets to do everything. If not, then a tablet style device should offer a number of solutions. The tablet keypad should

The market is looking much brighter and the demand for IP CCTV seems to be greater than it has been for some time. We see this area as a genuine opportunity for customers to either upgrade their existing analogue solution, or to adopt a CCTV system for the first time. IP CCTV is producing images of great quality, in a convenient and energy efficient manner – it is also is great value for money. The UK’s appetite for CCTV seems to know no bounds and we find that customers are delighted with the image quality they are getting, plus the remote access capability is making it easier to access their live and recorded images are bringing CCTV up to date. In terms of what manufacturers and distributors can do to help the industry, very simply, when they produce a camera, they need to not only provide a pdf of what the camera looks like, they should produce some footage of what the camera performs like in a variety of lighting conditions. This way, customers can see exactly the image quality they are getting for their money and can make an informed choice about which type of image quality is suitable for their needs. Other than this, we are finding that distributors are generally very efficient, hungry for the business and keen to support us.

TRAINING
Plug the knowledge gap Is it time you brushed up on your knowledge? In an increasingly competitive environment, it is vital for installers to make sure they are able to work with networks and other developments that are the future of security systems ver the last few years we have discussed on numerous occasions how the UK installer knowledge base in regard to IP is one of the driving factors in the take up of networked technology, and is one of the reasons behind the rate of migration. But this slower than predicted take-up does not mean that the future of security is not network based, which could leave those who are IP-phobic behind. While younger generations of people coming into security installation are IT savvy and IT integrators are also looking at signing up security contracts, the outlook for the traditionallyminded, analogue-focused installer could be viewed as shaky so training to a good standard is the way forward. These days it is known as ‘upskilling your workforce’ rather than training, possibly due to the fact that many do believe that the threat from the IT integrator side of the market is putting installers in a situation where they have to do something about the education of their operatives or face an uncertain future. In a security world where the installer is constantly playing catch-up with the developments hitting the market from manufacturers, upskilling is vital. For example if you have not yet got to grips with IP, then you cannot offer your customers the benefits of networked technology such as higher definitions (although there are HD alternatives using analogue) and analytics (again, although there are alternatives) but you can bet that you won’t be future-proofing your installations. How many manufacturers will be making a 4K analogue camera? How many installations will specify analogue ten years from now? In the world of CCTV it is time to make sure that you and your team know how to fit IP. Fortunately IP CCTV is not as tricky to install as it has been in the past, with true plug-and-play systems now on the market you don’t always need to be sorting out IP addresses, but a good understanding of the licensing side of things is required as well as bandwidths and networks. In other sectors of the security market the technology developments have not slowed down either, and in the majority of these developments a network is also involved. Remote access has
O

become a common factor of alarm systems and equipment offering remote maintenance and setup are not unique. Talking to PSI a while back Dennis Smith, Video Training Manager for Pelco by Schneider Electric told us that learning is vital for business development: “Up-skilling a company’s workforce is vital for business growth, as well as professional development of the employees,” he says. “By offering them training, it is possible to increase their productivity, maximise efficiency, as well as grow their confidence. Through good training and a solid understanding of how IP integrates with security, they will also be able to specify more accurately, thus optimising equipment. “We believe that IP training is becoming crucial across all industries and installers will be expected to have at least a basic understanding of how video is integrated into a network, while being able to accurately install and maintain it. We hope that by gaining a basic understanding of IP networks, installers will be encouraged to seek further information, continually improving their knowledge of this complex subject.” In terms of where the future lies, Dennis believes that traditional integrators have three options; they can train themselves or their workforce and accept that this will take time away from their usual day to day activity, but they will then have the skills needed to meet the growing demands of IP. Alternatively a company can hire a dedicated IP technician, but they are likely to command a higher rate of salary, or they could partner with an IT company. “Whichever option they choose there is no denying that installers will need to be trained in IP in order to meet the growing demand and

also future-proof their business,” he says. IFSEC events for the last few years have shown that manufacturers are increasingly pushing IP, even if the core market for many of them is still analogue technology, but analogue is not where the R&D budget is going. The relationship between IT and the security sector is a gap that is closing and all the while this is going on technologies linked to IP and others are fast moving with new systems constantly hitting the market. But it is worth noting that while IP knowledge is widely reported as lacking in some quarters, there are other subjects that need addressing too. The largest knowledge gaps remain in IP video surveillance. Many manufacturers are expending a large amount of effort to convince the industry that IP video surveillance can be as easy as analogue – and it can, providing the basic elements of IP are clearly understood. Too many installers are fitting IP cameras and network video recorders or server based recording platforms without any comprehension of bandwidth limitations, VLAN separation, port allocation or PoE restrictions. Without doubt progress has been made, but there is still some way to go. Other knowledge gaps that really stand out to concern smartcards and the emerging NFC (Near Field Communication) technologies. Smartcards have already been widely adopted within the
Manufacturers recognise the need for having an installer base that knows how to fit the systems that are being introduced at a continuous rate; if you can’t fit it, you won’t specify it! 40
education and public sectors, but a lot of the time they’re not used for access control and while NFC is still a very new technology to access control, people might still be working out how they can promote it. Getting to grips with smartcards and NFC can open up new opportunities for the installer and offer a wealth of benefits to the end-user. The possibility of new business should be a great motivator for training, especially as endusers look to the installer for advice on what they need to solve a particular security problem and take great comfort when the installer can demonstrate their knowledge of the industry and propose a system to suit the exact requirements of the application. The benefits for installers that take the time to learn about new technologies and to training their staff on various systems can have not only a positive effect on day-to-day performance, but also on future business and the ability to compete in areas that had previously been out of the remit – such as IP, NFC, 4K etc. Fortunately, manufacturers recognise the need for having an installer base that knows how to fit the systems that are being introduced at a continuous rate; if you can’t fit it, you won’t specify it! Therefore your distributor or your manufacturer/vendor will run training programmes that will give you the background on how to work with various technologies. What’s more, a lot of these training sessions are offered free of charge so keep an eye out for any programmes in your local area. If you want to compete, your knowledge must compare.

POWER
The real cost of efficiency odern organisations have many considerations and responsibilities to their customers, government and law but in recent times the implementation of ‘green’ policies has taken a new turn. In the past, companies were not restricted by environmental issues, nor were they compulsory requirements and, as a result, some organisations used being environmentally-friendly as a marketing message. Today however, with the widespread concerns regarding climate change, governments around the world have deemed it necessary to include regulations and legislation as to the performance of business in terms of their environmental impact, which is now often referred to as the carbon footprint. Since the first G8 Climate Change Roundtable in 2005 when former PM Tony Blair led a discussion regarding a global plan of action the group has grown to include companies such as Ford, British Airways, HSBC, EDF and BP. Now, the Roundtable has a membership of 150 businesses spread across the globe which, according to Reuters, Friends of the Earth feels represents a major shift by the business community towards efforts to mitigate climate change. So with the seeming keenness of the business community to do something about its carbon footprint and the promises made by governments to reduce carbon emissions ( the UK government introduced carbon budgets as part of the Climate Change Act 2008 to help the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050) legislation has become necessary. The UK carbon budget places a restriction on the total amount of greenhouse gases the UK can emit over a five-year period. Under a system of carbon budgets, every tonne of greenhouse gases emitted between now and 2050 will count. Where emissions rise in one sector, the UK will have to achieve corresponding falls in another. The CRC affects large public and private sector organisations across the UK, together responsible for around 10% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Participants include supermarkets, water companies, banks, local authorities and all central government departments. The scheme is designed to target emissions not already covered by Climate Change Agreements (CCAs) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and features a range of drivers to encourage organisations to develop energy management strategies that promote a better understanding of energy usage. Organisations that meet the qualification criteria are required to participate, and must buy allowances for every tonne of carbon they emit. Qualification for the scheme is based on
M
www.psimagazine.co.uk
electricity usage. For Phase 2, organisations will qualify if, during the qualification year, they consumed over 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of qualifying electricity through settled half-hourly meters. Organisations that meet the qualification threshold must register using the CRC Registry, which is administered by the Environment Agency. Qualifying organisations have to comply legally with the scheme or face financial and other penalties. Organisations which participate within the CRC are required to monitor their energy use, and report their energy supplies annually. The Environment Agency’s reporting system applies emissions factors to calculate participants’ carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on the basis of this information. Participants must purchase and surrender allowances to offset their emissions. Allowances can either be bought at annual fixedprice sales, or traded on the secondary market. One allowance must be surrendered for each tonne of CO2 emitted. The allowance price in Phase 1 has been set at £12 per tonne of CO2. Fines for failing to report on annual emissions could increase. Currently organisations are fined a one-off payment of £5,000; paying a further £500 for each subsequent day reports are delayed, up to a maximum of 40 working days - or £20,000 so there is quite a financial motive for compliance as well as the environmental factor.
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (or CRC Scheme) could result in fines for your customers that don’t change their ways
What can your customers do? So your customer has a constant flow of people entering and leaving the site and a host of potential risks to deal with. How can they possibly begin to consider their carbon footprint? And how much will it cost them to follow the legislation? A report by CMR Consultants states: “Despite its simplification, the CRC can impose a significant cost and resource burden on an organisation. In addition, the scheme is being amended on a regular basis by the Government and there appears to be no sign of this changing.” It also recommends developing a carbon management strategy, budget for the energy consumption allowances fees, and investigate the most effective ways of introducing energy-saving measures. There are energy-saving measures for 24/7 fire and security systems you could specify that will help your customers avoid CRC fines. In such cases it would certainly prove prudent to look at alternative forms of power supply such as switched mode technology, already providing savings for various sectors of the market.
Organisations which participate within the CRC are required to monitor their energy use, and report their energy supplies annually 43

Visitors to WAGNER’s stand at this year’s Firex International will be able to experience at first hand fire protection products and solutions designed for the most demanding applications. Protecting high-value assets, ensuring business continuity and enabling zero-downtime are key features of WAGNER’s solutions - OxyReduct fire prevention and the Titanus family of air sampling smoke detection systems. OxyReduct creates an environment where fires cannot start, by continuously reducing the oxygen level in a closed room through adding nitrogen to the air. The oxygen is reduced to a level in which most combustibles do not inflame and an open fire is impossible. Importantly, people can enter and work in the protected area at any time. Unlike traditional fire protection technologies, OxyReduct ensures that valuable assets or equipment will not be damaged by smoke or water/gas from extinguishing systems. Providing very early warning of smoke provides a critical advantage for building users, enabling them to react decisively before a fire takes hold and causes significant damage. The TITANUS range of air sampling smoke detection systems offers features that ensure early detection for the whole spectrum of possible fires. Firex Stand P400
Traka Traka will be offering visitors an opportunity to preview the Traka21 plug and play unit, which will be ready for serial delivery starting in the fourth quarter this year. Traka21 is a key management solution in a plug and play unit, designed for the needs of small to medium sized businesses. The system allows stand-alone operation, so there is no need to connect to a PC. However, users can still access basic reports on the screen and can set up PIN codes to allow access to designated keys. Jointly available with the release of the Traka21 will be a new single use security seal developed by Traka to be employed without the need for a specialised tool. The unit also enables users to import user access rights and export audit data via USB thumb drive connectivity. Tanveer Choudhry, Global Marketing Manager for Traka, said, “As security solutions grow in sophistication, physical keys are becoming the weak link when it comes to traceability and accountability. Not all businesses will have a need to install one of the larger Traka systems, but they will still require a robust key management solution to ensure that the weak link does not jeopardise the overall security of the operation.” IFSEC Stand D1700

he Vicon HDExpress4 is a four channel high definition network video recorder. It is available with/without hard drives fitted and can support up to 2 x 4TB onboard. This is the smallest unit in the HD Express range which also includes 8 and 16 channel versions. HD Express has been designed to provide a plug and play solution for Vicon’s V960 and V992 high definition IP camera range and has an onboard PoE switch for direct connection of each camera. With the exception of 2 USB sockets on the front of the unit all connections are located at the rear of the NVR. These include 12VDC switched power input, 48VDC PoE power input, HDMI monitor output, RJ45 sockets for each camera and LAN connections, audio in/out connections, 2 onboard alarm inputs, 1 relay output, an RS232 port for ATM/POS applications, an RS485 port and an eSATA socket for additional external storage if required. The HDExpress4 shares the same small form factor as the 8 channel version. It comes well packed with both a quick start and full installation manual. Our test unit arrived with a single hard drive already installed but fitting an additional drive is a simple process. The drives are installed from the underside of the unit. Two sections of the base of the unit are removable and form the mounting brackets for the hard drives. All fixings are provided with the unit. Two block power supplies are provided with the NVR, a 12VDC unit for powering the NVR itself and a 48VDC for supplying the PoE to the onboard switch. Two clips are provided for securing the cables of the PSU’s to the rear of NVR thus preventing

accidental disconnection. The PoE supply output varies depending on the model, with the 4 channel version providing 40W (maximum of 15W on an individual port). The PoE supports direct connection of cameras up to 100m away. Beyond this, a network repeater/hub would be required and a dedicated power supply or PoE injector local to the camera. On power up the NVR boots to a login screen (unit supports 1080p 60Hz monitors with HDMI connection) and entry of the default username and password is required to take you to the live screen. The live screen comprises of 3 main components: the video window, a status bar across the bottom and a timeline zone to the far right. The status bar and timeline zone are displayed when you move the cursor to the bottom or right hand side of the screen respectively. Operation of the NVR may be achieved via the mouse or via the remote control. (The latter may apparently be used to control multiple NVR’s providing its ID has been programmed into them). The HD Express range has been designed to provide true plug and play operation when used with Vicon’s V992 and V960 range of IP cameras. We tested the NVR with 4 such cameras (a separate review of the cameras will follow next month) which by default come set for DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). each camera was discovered, configured and came up in the live screen without any intervention from ourselves. Any required changes to camera configurations may then be completed directly from the NVR. The menu button on the left of the Status Bar provides access to system and recording set-up. Navigation of the set up menus is straight forward, reasonably intuitive and covered within the installation manual. Recording may be auto-configured (optimised settings for each mode) or set up manually. Recording modes include continuous, motion, alarm, scheduled and panic. All channels may be recorded at 25-30 images/sec at full HD resolution. Searching of recorded footage is by time, thumbnail or event. Footage may be bookmarked during playback and reserved for archiving via the USB port. The unit has a dedicated network port for remote access via a Web Viewer providing comprehensive operation and configuration features. Android and iPad/iPhone apps are also available. Use of the NVR with third party products is one area that is questionable. There are suggestions within the product’s marketing documentation that it may be used with third party ONVIF compliant cameras but we saw no detail information within the installation manual to confirm this. The HD Express NVR is well suited to smaller entry level applications providing an effective solution for 1080p recording and playback. Its simplicity of operation and installation when used with Vicon’s own V992/V960 IP camera range is difficult to ignore and if there are any installers out there still harbouring a fear of IP, this product provides a good platform to begin experiencing network video with.

he RISCO LightSYS 2 is a hybrid security system offering up to 32 circuits in any combination of conventionally wired, wireless or RISCO Bus wiring methods. The product is designed to comply with EN50131-1, EN50131-3 Grade 2 and is aimed at the smaller commercial and larger residential markets. The main panel is available in a polycarbonate housing with a 1.5A PSU or in a metal enclosure with 1.5A or 4A PSU. The panel comes with 8 onboard detection circuits that may be wired using a variety of methods but 2K2 resistors are supplied for double EOL wiring if required. Wired (8 circuit) and wireless (32 circuit) expansion units are available. Other accessories include a variety of compatible keypads, plug in IP and GPRS/GSM modules, an X10 transmitter module, interactive voice module and auxiliary power supplies. The unit provided for evaluation was the polycarbonate version, which has a drop down hinged lid (can be completely removed if necessary). The main PCB sits above the 1.5A block power supply across the top of the enclosure and there are mounting clips to the left hand side for 2 accessory/expansion modules which are mounted vertically (side edge to the front). Our unit came with an interactive voice module and wireless expansion module in these locations. The IP and GPRS/GSM plugin modules mount directly onto the main PCB with the GPRS antenna located vertically on the right hand side of the panel. A back tamper switch may be mounted centrally below the main PCB (not supplied with our unit) and below this is the battery space. Hardwired circuits may use a variety of resistor values and these can be programmed circuit by circuit if required. Alternatively RISCO Bus detectors may be installed directly on the same 4 wire communication line as the keypads and system modules. Bus detectors include a range of motion detectors and a seismic detector. The Communication Bus is limited to 300m but this should be plenty for the target market and can be extended if required using Bus Zone Expander modules. A further option is to install a wireless receiver module (2 may be connected in total) to the communication line, thus enabling the use of RISCO’s extensive wireless detector range.

There is a choice of 3 hardwired and a wireless keypad, though only the hardwired versions may be used for system programming. All of them have a proximity option. As outlined above the LightSYS has several communication options; onboard PSTN, GPRS/GSM and IP in any combination. The optional voice module provides pre-recorded events announcements, system status information, two way audible communications and any DTMF telephone can become a keypad for the system. Assuming either GPRS or IP modules are installed, there is a further option to register the system with RISCO Cloud* enabling communication and monitoring via smartphone/tablet and web application. So to the system configuration and operation; how easy is the system to configure and use? Engineer programming may be achieved by any of the following methods. - Via RISCO’s configuration software (either locally or remotely). - Upload a previously saved configuration from a Program Transfer Module (PTM). - Via an LCD system keypad Configuration software is available to download from the RISCO website but is restricted to registered installers and this can take a day or so to come through. Flexible system design (wired/wireless/RISCO Bus) Flexible communication paths Smartphone app available for remote monitoring and operation configuration, we ‘opted’ to use the traditional method! The problem with engineer programming menus is that we get used to using a particular product and it’s very easy to dismiss new products because they don’t conform. In most cases they are not worse, just different! The LightSYS is no exception; our initial review of the programming instructions in the manual made for a pretty daunting looking task. The reality however is not so bad. Entering the engineering menu
is easy enough and once you begin to get the menu structure in your head, navigation through the programming is easy enough. An Auto –Settings process scans the communication bus, identifies all the device modules connected and displays them one by one on the keypad to be accepted and parameters configured. Once programmed, the functions available to the user are considerable. Basic operation however, in terms of setting/unsetting, managing user codes etc. is pretty straightforward. There is little doubt that LightSYS2 is a truly versatile security control system providing flexibility of installation and an extensive list of features. It should certainly fulfil the needs of the target market of small commercial / large residential providing of course that grade 2 is acceptable. It has so many features that we found ourselves wondering how many installations could actually exploit the product to anything like its full potential! *RISCO Cloud is a proprietary application server enabling RISCO Group users and partners to access advanced features offered with several of the Group products

Long-range PIR offers 220m curtain The ADPRO PRO E-400H, the new long-range PIR, extends the PRO E portfolio for applications with hundreds of metres of perimeter such as solar parks, gas pipelines, and airports where traditional PIRs with a smaller curtain would be costly from both a hardware and installation perspective. The PRO E-400H SLR reduces the number of poles required for installation, the number of detectors, and cabling resulting in reduced installation time and 65% cost savings. The SLR was designed to deliver accurate zones (up to seven) for visual verification, and when installed pointing at each other offers doubleknock protection for 220m. The ADPRO PRO E-PIR series provides maximum tamper protection with 360PROtect to eliminate the creep zone entirely. 360PROtect provides detection for attempted surface mount removal and anti-masking and delivers separate alarms to the Central Monitoring Station so operators can respond quickly and accurately. xtralis.com

STANDARDS
Environmental legislation... ... and what you need to know by Adrian Mealing - Chairman BSIA Security Equipment Manufacturers Section s our world continues to evolve, and the digital age expands, legislation across the EU and in other parts of the world is in a constant state of change. Issues around global warming, the expansion of wireless technology and the everincreasing awareness of the need to be green and "do your bit" have an impact on everything we do and the products we buy. The intruder alarm industry is not immune to this, and manufacturers, suppliers and installers all have a role to play in ensuring compliance and good environmental practices are adhered too. Changes made to two standards in 2011 which affect intruder alarm systems come into force on 13th June this year. EN50130-4 Alarm systems. Electromagnetic compatibility. Product family standard. Immunity requirements for components of fire, intruder, hold up, CCTV, access control and social alarm systems and EN50130-5 Alarm systems. Environmental test methods. Both of these standards are used by test labs and are a requirement for CE marking. Responsible manufactures, and those governed by the BSIA's code of conduct, will already be ahead of the game, ensuring their products meet the requirements, and keeping you legal and above board. One of the main changes is an increase in radiated electromagnetic field immunity requirements, which now sit at 2.7GHz. It's not always about how your product may influence others, the reverse is also true, and making sure the equipment you use meets the applicable standards reduces the possibility of false activations and spurious alarms. We have all been to sites where spurious or unexplained alarms occur, and 99% of the time the equipment is replaced to pacify the client, even when the cause is unknown. In many cases, the alarm could have been caused by environmental issues and this is probably more the case with wireless devices. The proliferation of other high-powered devices being deployed in homes and businesses either in the same frequency band or in adjacent bands, mean that proper testing of equipment placed on the market is an absolute requirement. BSIA manufacturers take their role very seriously, and are committed to providing reliable equipment both now and in the future. There are of course many other environmental regulations and directives, which affect manufacturers, installers and end users alike. The WEEE Directive, the ROHS2 Directive, REACH and a whole list of other work is being carried out across the EU. Fortunately the BSIA and its manufacturers are fully engaged in the processes, and will be compliant when Directives and legislation change. So with all of this "stuff" going on, why would you not make sure you buy your equipment from a BSIA manufacturer, after all they are doing lots of the hard work for you behind the scenes, to help you be compliant, and make sure the product you install is legal and fit for purpose? You could import product yourself, but if it does not come from the EU, how will you guarantee you are not opening up your business to easily avoided risks? Next month: Alarm cable - it's just a bit of wire isn't it?

Sounder for hazardous areas Hochiki Europe has announced the latest addition to its range of intrinsically safe compatible devices – the CHQ-ISM sounder module. The intrinsically safe devices are incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to cause the ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignitable concentration. This is achieved by limiting the amount of power available to the electrical equipment in the hazardous area to a level below that where ignition is possible. The low power levels also mean that there is no shock hazard due to excess thermal energy and arcing. With a similar look and feel as the standard modules in the range, the CHQ-ISM is designed for use in the ‘safe’ area of a hazardous area fire detection system and, therefore, does not require specialised certification. It allows any third party sounders and beacons installed in the ‘hazardous’ area to be controlled and monitored by an analogue addressable control panel that is configured around Hochiki Europe’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP). The unit is wired either directly to the panel via the conventional sounder circuits – receiving its 24V power supply from the panel – or via a CHQ-DSC sounder controller module connected to the loop, where it requires a separate 24V power supply. www.hochikieurope.com
New licensing concept announced Milestone Systems has announced a new licensing concept for analogue cameras used with the forthcoming XProtect 2014 family of VMS products. In the new licensing concept, only one hardware device license is needed per analogueto-IP encoder unit, regardless of the number of analogue cameras connected to the encoder unit. This new licensing concept facilitates a smooth migration to digital video for customers using analogue cameras. They can get all the benefits of using IP video management software at a cost-effective price, even when using analogue cameras. Furthermore, the transition from analogue to IP can be done with the most convenient timing for the customer. The analogue infrastructure can run parallel to new IP technology, making the transition in a gradual approach. Analogue cameras can be swapped for digital cameras as needed. www.milestonesys.com

FIRE APPLICATION
Quick install for pharma client Following the installation of a Baldwin Boxall BVR20 networked system in early 2000s, a pharmaceutical research customer decided to carry out a complete fire detection upgrade to the site, which included a new fire alarm system, detectors, voice alarm, fibre network and loudspeakers. It is estimated that over 50 control panels, around 9,000 fire alarm devices and about the same number of loudspeakers will be replaced, checked and tested across the site during the 24 month project. At a site that employs around 2,000 staff, it was imperative that any disruption during the replacement of loudspeakers, or any part of the system, was kept to the minimum. Baldwin Boxall was handed the order to provide a replacement VA system in Autumn 2013 – comprising of 14 EVAS digitally networked racks, touchscreen control, fire and control microphones. In December 2013 the systems were delivered to site and installed adjacent to the existing BVR20 racks. During this period a new multimode fibre backbone was installed throughout the complex and the new racks were then connected to the network and soak tested over the Christmas break, thus ensuring there were no faults on the fibre network. The existing BVR20 system remained operational during this period. In January 2014, with the co-operation of Baldwin Boxall’s project management team, Tri Management planned the best way to swap over the BVR20 VA system to the new EVAS system, with the minimum downtime as possible. A programme of works was carried out – starting with the fitting of new fire detection panels, detection loops/devices, and connecting these panels the BVR20 rack system. Tri Management checked all loudspeaker circuits, prior to the migration; clearing any faults found ensured that the new system would be fault free at the time of changeover. New voice alarm termination boxes were installed in each rack room and, initially, connected to the BVR20 system. Loudspeaker lines were fed through the new EVAS racks and re-terminated back onto the old, in preparation for the changeover. One by one, each circuit was disconnected to the correct circuit within minutes. This method, along with taking full advantage of the fact that the system is wired on a dual circuit basis, ensured that there was no system downtime throughout this complex site. Prior to the final swap over, each building was tested with a local alert and evacuate message. At this point it was necessary to amend the messages as the client wished to have the existing old VA messages and not new versions. So, Baldwin Boxall’s engineer simply downloaded the existing messages from the old system then uploaded to the new. Then each local fire microphone was tested. This ensured a smooth transition when the final swap over took place. Effective planning and efficient methods meant that the transition from old to new was carried out in 2.5 days.

Connections Hello again, I was asked once if this column was written by a “ghost” writer and if not, do I ever have difficulty thinking of a subject matter after 20 plus years of the connections column? Well, firstly I am afraid that all that is printed here can only be attributed directly to me and secondly, there have always been things to talk about in our industry, even if on occasion the column has been used to take a bit of a swipe at the establishment. It is fair to say that at on many occasions the content has focused on particular issues and those it affected were concentrating more on what was being said, rather than getting on resolving the issues and running their own business. That’s the beauty of an advertorial column in a trade magazine, it enables one to vent one’s spleen or to promote our own Company and the services it provides. This month is a reflection on our longevity in the monitoring business and the continued commitment to providing unrivalled levels of customer service to the Fire & Security industry. After 31 years of trading, we have seen competition & recessions come and go, we’ve seen the constant cycle of acquisition and new growth. We’ve seen numerous ACPO policies and inspectorate bodies as well as huge changes to Standards and it’s fair to say we have been in the thick of it, representing our industry in all sectors and 31 years on, we continue to do so. However, back in December 1983 when we opened our doors (figuratively speaking!), I would never have dreamt that in 2014 we would be the size we are with two centres, certificated by NSI for Fire, Intruder, CCTV and High Integrity monitoring. With new customers joining SMS & NMS on a daily basis, we are still enjoying significant growth and I cannot recall such an increase in sales activity from the Fire & Security channel, well not since the last national renumbering exercise in 1994. Additionally, we are constantly being challenged on the primary core services we deliver by companies who are outside of the Fire & Security marketplace, who in turn want to avail themselves of our 365 24/7 facilities both in Manchester and Portsmouth. So we find ourselves exploring other opportunities that have taken us into other areas of monitoring, brand reputation and phone answering services. FIRE APPLICATION
Glass atrium provides install challenges 5 Merchant Square is an office building arranged over 15 floors in Paddington’s waterside setting, with a full height glass atrium. The shape of the atrium creates a flood of natural light throughout the building but this presented challenges when it came to fitting fire detection equipment, as Chris Onions, Project Manager at Leader Systems explains: “We were tasked to fit out the shell and core of the 15 floor building to give fire detection across the whole site. There were a number of features in the building that meant a complete fire detection system was absolutely vital. The first challenge was the atrium. As a full glass structure, with no access, it was impossible to fit any smoke or multi-sensor detectors at the top. However, because it was 100% glass, the only place a fire could start would be on the ground and so we chose to fit eight fire beam detectors.” The open protocol, reflective smoke beam detectors incorporate a motorised head able to align itself during commissioning to continually correct against building movement and ensure maximum protection at all times. “The next challenge came in the loading bay areas. As with any environment like this, the high ceilings allowing for lorry movement meant traditional detectors wouldn’t give the level of protection required, so we used Apollo’s Flame Detector,” Chris said. Flame Detector is designed to protect enclosed indoor areas where open fires may occur and has a fast acting response to flames up to 25m away. Critically, it is able to discriminate between flames and other, non-threatening sources of radiation. Leader Systems finished the initial installation and then revisited to install detectors for a retailer’s head offices which occupied the first seven floors of the building. In total, Leader Systems installed more than 4,500 devices and expanded on the fire alarm panels installed during the shell and core fit out. Chris explains: “We were already familiar with the site and its challenges so this installation was more straightforward. We used Discovery devices again and fitted optical devices in the voids above all ceilings.”

hen the SCCI Group decided to acquire a business to help expand it’s offering, it looked for a good small business with sound foundations operating in similar sectors. It didn’t have to look too hard to find Alphatrack Systems Ltd then run by the imposing figure of Doug Hursey a 6ft 9” former rugby player who ran a very tight ship and had personal involvement in virtually every decision the business made on a daily basis. The deal was done in December 2011 and by June 2012 both SCCI and Alphatrack were operating as one business (though in two distinct divisions; Media & Combined Services) out of new offices in Harlow, Essex and under the newly branded SCCI Alphatrack Ltd. Since then the Combined Services division who focus on providing Security & Fire system services to landlords across the UK has more than doubled in size and continues to enjoy organic growth through a combination of customer retention and new customer acquisition. With recently won maintenance contracts from the likes of Norwich City Council, Derby Homes, Thames Valley Housing Association, Poplar Harca, Red Kite Housing Association and most recently The Hyde Group, proving the underlying business base is strong and getting stronger. The division’s Managing Director Andy Kearns fully recognises the challenges that growth can bring and also the importance of the people within his business. “As a business we’ve more than doubled in size since 2012. This is really encouraging but it does bring its own challenges. The core foundations of people,

We have experienced a few internal growing pains over the last year or so but nothing that has derailed our business or stopped us from supporting the needs of our clients and their residents. However, we continue to set our sights firmly on taking this business from a good one to an excellent one and this is the primary focus for the next 12 months. We are now well on the way to that through a number of internal initiatives including our ‘Performance Through People’ programme which will lay the foundations for personal excellence across all levels of our business.”
New Contract, New Recruits SCCI Alphatrack was recently awarded a contract to provide maintenance services to Security, Fire, Emergency Lighting and Warden Call systems for Hyde Housing. This project sees them providing engineering services from the South Coast up to the East Midlands, covering a large tranche of central London along the way. In Social Housing terms this is a huge contract with a rapid mobilisation challenge which will see them recruiting circa 50 new engineers in a variety of roles and locations across the UK. They are looking for Security & Fire Engineers and Line Managers to support both Preventative and Reactive maintenance programmes being delivered as part of this new contract.

PROMOTION
Tavcom Training endorsed by SSAIB The 20th Anniversary as the leading provider of security systems training is perhaps justification enough for Tavcom to toast its success. News however that it has been chosen as the SSAIB’s preferred supplier of training, has given the Tavcom team even more reason to celebrate. s part of an agreement between SSAIB and Tavcom, the 1,500+ installation companies certificated by SSAIB will now have access via the organisation’s website to BTEC accredited Tavcom online courses covering a wide range of Access Control, Intruder Alarms, CCTV and IP network issues. The website also highlights an option available via Tavcom, to achieve the City & Guilds Security Systems NVQ and underpinning knowledge qualifications, whilst SSAIB members will also receive a 20% discount on all Tavcom classroom and workshop based training courses conducted at its Bishops Waltham, Hants training centre. SSAIB is the UK’s leading fire, security and telecare certification body, offering a wide range of schemes for providers of electronic security systems with the objective of promoting high standards and providing recognition for those companies which achieve them. “SSAIB passionately believes that it is imperative for all companies operating in the professional security arena to provide access to training for all staff and particularly for those responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of security and safety systems,” said Geoff Tate, Chief Executive of SSAIB. “Professionally developed and delivered training is essential to any business wishing to succeed in today’s world and SSAIB has no hesitation in fully supporting the professional training courses developed and delivered by Tavcom.” The Tavcom online ‘distance learning’ training courses approved by SSAIB offer a practical and cost effective alternative to traditional classroom style courses, allowing students to acquire new skill sets without having to come ‘off the road’ and at their own pace and in their own time.

“We are naturally delighted that, following an evaluation process, SSAIB has decided to approve our training programmes and provide an opportunity for us to promote them to SSAIB members. It is a very welcome vote of confidence in our ability to provide first class education for anyone involved in the electronic security industry,” said Paul Tennent, Managing Director of Tavcom. “The 20% discount in relation to our classroom courses is a significant incentive for SSAIB members, although we anticipate that the online distance learning courses will particularly attract their attention as they enable security professionals to acquire career enhancing bespoke qualifications without any disruption to their day-to-day working life.” For Tavcom, it is simply just about providing students with maximum choice. The Tavcom classroom type training courses continue to be extremely popular and may continue to be the first choice for many students. In fact, quite often one or more of the 70 courses on offer are overbooked. This is of course very good news for Tavcom but it is a company that has never allowed itself to become complacent, which is why it has upgraded its training facilities at our Bishops Waltham training centre. Students attending, for example, one of Tavcom’s wide range of BTEC certificated CCTV courses can take advantage of unrivalled ‘hands-on’ facilities that provide an immediate opportunity to put theory into practice with the help from equipment supplied by many well known brands, including AXIS, Dallmeier, IDIS, Panasonic, Pelco, Samsung Techwin and Vista. The Tavcom proposition, which has permeated throughout all its training activities over the last 20 years, is based on a passionately held belief that formal training programmes leading to accredited and recognised qualifications, as well as CPD structured points through vocational assessment and project work, is a winning formula to ensure that people of all skill levels can be effective and successful in their workplace and can make a massive difference to those who are looking to develop rewarding careers within the security industry. www.tavcom.com

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Pub grub on the lens? Every month we seem to be subjected to footage from pubs claiming to show ghosts, but just show insects. This month is no different with Liverpool pub staff apparently believing they have caught a ghostly vision on CCTV. The orb-like apparition was captured at Allerton Hall floating across the picture in footage which has left workers and regulars at the grade II listed building “baffled”. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnrKBtUWOxo
Cat is top dog This CCTV footage shows a toddler riding his bicycle in front of his Bakersfield, California, home when his neighbour’s dog sneaks around a parked car and grabs his leg. Within seconds, the boy’s pet cat comes to his aid, launching itself at the dog and chasing it off the property. The four-year-old was taken to hospital where he received ten stitches. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD4_7Bk19qI
Paranormal parking Only published in May this year, this footage is reported to show an incident in Kuala Lumpur in 2102 in which a car park camera caught a collision between a car and a ghost. In one of the better produced films of an apparition, the ghost can be seen stepping out in front of the car and the driver and passenger both stepping out to look for the vanished soul.
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Cheap flight to Hawai Surveillance video captured a teen stowaway dropping from a Hawaiian Airlines plane landing gear in Maui. The teen stowaway staggered out of plane after hiding in wheel well for the five-hour flight that reached 35,000ft. Apparently Yahya Abdi ran away from home, hopped over the fence at Mineta San Jose International Airport and climbed onto the closest plane. No charges were brought against the 15 yearold. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1vUaeB1mu4
Wind raises the roof! The UK experienced some wild weather in the first quarter of 2014. Prolonged heavy rains caused a lot of flooding and high winds added to the misery. In this footage an entire roof is blown off the roof of an office in Whitchurch, north Shropshire. The structure measuring about 30 metres by 6 metres and weighing an estimated three tonnes was dropped in the car park of NSM Nicholson House nearly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EArNiOf7eO8
