As we head to IFSEC this month to meet up with the great and good of the security industry and to peruse the latest launches onto the market, it is interesting to ponder on why the security sector is not moving as fast as vendors would like into new areas of technology – or indeed whether it needs to. ew technologies constantly hit the market with some crossing over to our industry from others. The Cloud has been around for a number of years and is now shifting into the security sector – according to experts. They believe that the growth in the number of IT integrators moving into the security sector will drive the uptake of virtualised video storage. Forget using the limited capacity of disks, now you can, bandwidth permitting, save to the Cloud and be safe in the knowledge that the information is secure and can be accessed at any time by an authorised person with a smartphone or tablet. What does appear to be in question is the level to which the Cloud will potentially be utilised in the sector. So far it seems that the platform will not be replacing the established methods of storage, rather it will be used as a form of widely accessible data back-up. Also, access to the Cloud can help installers with locating and configuring cameras on a network and give endusers remote access to video . But can it really take off any further than this in an industry that is traditionally a little sceptical of change? The security industry is still operating in an analogue world. Despite all of the predictions we’ve had that any day now the IP market will conquer all, the vast majority of applications are still analogue and this shows little sign of changing as quickly as some hope. So, in light of this, how will the average security installer be feeling about the Cloud? Of course the installer is not necessarily the driver in this scenario. The use of a Cloud will probably be moved onwards by the companies, your customers, who might have information policies regarding the storage of its data and will most certainly have IT departments already using the virtual space. That said, if an installer has not yet adopted IP then the chance of the Cloud entering his/her portfolio is slim. The security industry is at an interesting junction with its increasingly IT-savvy customers and the presence in the market of IT integrators who know all about networks and the Cloud, but not so much about the nuances of fitting CCTV etc to get the best results. Maybe it’s a generation thing and the IT experience and knowledge of the new security installers entering the industry will help to eventually shift the market into new territories. But for the moment traditional methods are still strong. Of course there is much to be said for whether or not the adoption of certain new technologies are truly needed anyway and this is why I would expect that a development like the Cloud will not be replacing the DVR for quite some time. The thing is, there is nothing inherently wrong with using a DVR so is the Cloud a development looking for a new home? What works in one market doesn’t always work in another. 3D CCTV anyone?

Homes with Pets The Premier Compact PW provides pet immunity for pets up to 35Kg ensuring your home is always protected and false alarms avoided.

Suggested Products: XT, QD, PW

Warm Climates Premier Compact XT, QD, & PW are designed to adjust sensitivity levels when the room temperature rises above 25°C to maximise catch performance.

Suggested Products: XT, QD, PW

Cold Climates During freezing temperatures some detectors are prone to false alarming due to other types of heat sources being mistaken for a genuine intrusion. This can be avoided with digital temperature compensation as it continually alters the detectors sensitivity level to match the environment.

INDUSTRY NEWS

INDUSTRY NEWS CCTV experts offer chance of ‘normal life’ 2020 Vision has developed an integrated monitoring system for a severely disabled boy which the company believes could change lives for those who have to care for severely disabled relatives. The team at 2020 were approached by the parents of ten-year-old Lewis Merrigan, who care full-time for their son. They wanted to create an integrated visual and audio monitoring system that would allow them to see or watch their son regardless of where they were located in their house. 2020 Vision devised a system consisting of eight internal high definition axis cameras, all with incorporated audio capability. Audio and visual feeds from the cameras, which auto-

track each movement and sound from Lewis, is then fed to a range of fixed monitors, portable screens and a range of speakers located around the house. The two cameras in Lewis’s bedroom have infra-red capabilities, which monitor him in his bed throughout the night. Footage and sound is recorded and stored in real time with Command Centre and Axis Companion software and edge storage facility. 2020 has been able to extend live footage to be relayed live to Jason and Liz Merrigan’s tablet and smartphone devices. Managing director of 2020 Vision, Peter Houlis, added: “Without doubt, this is one of the most rewarding projects we’ve worked on here in 21 years of this company. We’ve been able to adapt what is essentially security technology to provide minute-by-minute situational awareness to aid someone to make instant and fully informed decisions. We’re very proud to have been able to help Jason, Liz and Lewis.”

Restructuring for perimeter security business Perimeter security company Jacksons is restructuring to facilitate the expansion and diversification of the company. Richard Jackson, CEO and son of Ian Jackson the original founder of the business, will retain overall responsibility for the company and all of its Head Office functions. However both the Retail and Security divisions will now each operate under a General Manager. Andy Tune, formerly Operations Director at Jacksons assumes the role of Retail General Manager, while the position of Security General Manager has been filled by the

appointment of Ayrton Hossin. Commenting on the re-structure, CEO Richard Jackson says: “We have just enjoyed our 65th anniversary and the company that is in operation today has evolved dramatically since its inception back in 1947. In order to maintain the growth and development of Jacksons, I believe we need to focus on the specific needs of the two very distinct areas of the business – retail and security. I am excited by the potential opportunities this brings and am looking forward to working with the company’s loyal staff and management team to maintain and extend Jacksons’ reputation.”

Nowadays it’s important to be able to view security recordings from anywhere – across countries and even across the globe. But reviewing highquality scenes can be very time consuming – especially when this is carried out remotely via an internet connection. With limited-bandwidth connections, HD-quality material is invariably buffered, which takes time. As a result, until today remote viewing was mostly limited to SD images. Now, with the addition of Dynamic Transcoding Technology to the whole of its IP and HD range, Bosch offers the possibility for limited bandwidth remote monitoring. This new technology enables HD security images to be viewed from anywhere! www.boschsecurity.com/HDsecurity

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Peter Davies, Employer Account Manager at the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS). Peter was part of the round table meeting between the Security Industry and Government Skills Minister Matthew Hancock at the BIS Offices in Westminster.

Security apprentices leave for Denmark

Two groups of apprentices from various UK electronic security systems companies will be leaving the UK in April on a EU fully funded work experience programme to Denmark, the first such programme funded through the Leonardo Mobility Programme for Skills for Security. This has been in collaboration with the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology, Bravida, the leading systems installation company in Scandinavia, and the Leonardo da Vinci National Agency. The 14-day programme in Copenhagen will give participants the opportunity to experience operational practices overseas and participate in activities to enhance and develop their skills in the installation of security systems. They will stay in the city youth hostel, with an accompanying adult, and will be working alongside Bravida’s engineers in the Copenhagen area. The participants attended a pre departure briefing held by Skills for Security in Worcester prior to their departure where the aims of the Leonardo Mobility programme; to improve and update skills, share knowledge and experience, create contacts, promote continuous training, and diffuse knowledge were explained to the participants. The participants in these visits are: Aaron Noble of King Security Systems, Jake Stevenson from PWP Fire & Security, Joshua Reynolds of Mitie Fire & Security Systems, Nicholas Facer of Kings Security Systems, Quincy Poyser from Protec Fire Detection, Stuart Bates of Protec Fire Detection, Thomas Laycock of Kings Security Systems, Thomas Parker from VSG, Ben Ashley from Solutions SK, Kyle Hesketh of EFT Systems , Luke Fox of CTM Fire & Security, Luke Preston of CIA Fire & Security, Matthew Palmer from 1st Class Fire Protection, Ross Leader of Allgood Trio, Cedric Laubscher of Griffin Fire, Kieron Lees of CIA Fire & Security, James Raynor of EFT Systems and Stuart Mackenzie from EFT Systems. A further group of nine apprentices will be departing in June.

In brief Sony has announced that it has expanded its UK distribution channel through a new agreement with CCTV Center. The partnership with Sony will see CCTV Center distribute Sony’s portfolio of video security solutions and provide end user, consultant and installer customers with product insight and on-theground support.

Norbain has announced that it will be offering its customers CCTV products by UK manufacturer Silent Sentinel. The range includes rugged domes, long-range 360 degree continuous rotation PTZ positioning systems, fixed and functional thermal imaging cameras and bespoke builds.

Many Security Companies find it difficult to employ school leavers because of the Health & Safety site restrictions, have you encountered this? There is no universal Health & Safety law preventing young people working on site but age is certainly an issue within some Apprenticeship roles in the sector. There are jobs that for legal or technical reasons may suit an older apprentice but also there are roles that school leavers are particularly adept at. The majority of the funding provided for Apprentice Training is for the school leaver age range, what funding is available for older apprentices? In the current system the employers pay the apprentice a salary like a regular employee. The cost of the training is then funded through the Skills Funding Agency to the college or training provider that delivers on behalf of the employer. All of the costs of the training are covered if the apprentice is under 19 years of age. The funding of the 19-24 years demographic is part-funded and therefore the college or trainer will seek a financial contribution from the apprentice. How does the new system that is due to arrive later this year differ? The only difference from the current system is that as of the 1st August 2013, fees for Individuals aged 24+ on an Advanced apprenticeship will be funded via a learning loan, a bit like the Student Loan scheme for University but not nearly as costly. Employers will of course have the option of contributing to these fees with many employers opting to cover all apprentice fees – regardless of their age. Apprenticeships are attracting more media attention; do you think young people view them as an alternative to University? Attitudes are changing with regard to Apprenticeships in general and the comparison between Higher Apprenticeships and Degrees is a key issue. Recent research, commissioned by the National Apprenticeship Service, found that employers rate qualified apprentices as 15 per cent more employable than those with other qualifications. Anyone wanting to explore the idea of applying for an Apprenticeship should visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk and use the online search tool to find and apply for a vacancy. Candidates can get a head start and could progress all the way to a Masters Degree. One of the major objections in the Security Industry is the lack of local colleges offering a relevant course. What could be done to overcome this? Distance and E- learning could be part of the solution. If NAS and the security sector can work together to stimulate demand from Employers, I am sure local colleges will respond. Employers might also consider accessing the Employer Ownership Programme.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

HD cameras designed for easy installation Geutebruck’s new G-Cam/E range of HD cameras includes box, bullet, fixed dome and PTZ dome models for all types of professional monitoring applications, for indoors or out, with or without one-click AF. All have 1/2.7” CMOS image sensors, support H.264 and MJPEG, offer HD1080P resolution and day/night operation with removable cut filters for optimum light sensitivity and colour reproduction. After drilling holes and mounting a G-Cam/E series camera, installers plug a pocket-sized service screen into its analogue output and set the viewing angle. Then they can close the housing and adjourn to the workstation or control room to assign the IP address, take advantage of the remote-controlled motorised lens to adjust the image quality, and run the Geutebruck video system’s CamCheck feature to create a reference image from each camera. www.geutebruck.com

Widescreen LED monitors for flexibility Vigilant Vision has launched a range of HD-SDI 16:9 widescreen LED monitors that are designed to meet the needs of organisations requiring critical image evaluation. The new monitors are available in a range of sizes from 18.5” through to 42” with metal bezels and glass fronts. They feature dynamic contrast ratio of 1000:1 for more realistic pictures and true native pixel-to-pixel 1080p image displays with a response rate of less than 4ms which assists, for example, with smoother PTZ control in most environments. The built-in digital HD-SDI interface delivers uncompressed digital video over conventional coaxial cabling and a variety of inputs such as SDI, HDMI, VGA and standard BNC are included. www.vigilantvision.com

Compact cube cameras launched Vivotek has announced the launch of two compact size cube cameras - IP8130 and IP8131. Both cameras, with their small appearance, design and price, are reportedly ideal for end-user surveillance applications such as homes, offices and shops. IP8131, the enhanced version of IP8130, is suited to low-light situations with a removable IR-cut filter for day and night functionality and built-in IR Illuminators, effective up to 6 meters, securing excellent video quality under completely dark environments. IP8130 and IP8131, both equipped with 1-Megapixel CMOS sensors, are able to capture 1280 x 800 resolution video at 30 fps and have a built-in microphone able to record sounds within a five metre radius. With the bundled ST7501 multi-lingual 32-channel recording software, users can set up an IP surveillance system with IP8130 and IP8131 easily. Vivotek also provides a smartphone application, iViewer, for both iPhone and Android platforms, enabling users to monitor live video off-site in real time. www.vivotek.com

Wire-free video transmission system ESP has launched the EZ-WF Wirefree Video Signal Link, which is designed to provide a stable digital wire-free solution for the transmission of a video signal, where a cable run would be expensive or troublesome. Ideal for domestic or commercial applications, installation of the WZ-WF is easy. The transmitter and receiver come as factory ‘paired’, which means there is no setting up required. As the housings are IP66 rated they are suitable for exterior usage - advantageous for obtaining maximum transmission distances. The wireless transmitter accepts a signal from the camera whilst also providing a wired output for a local monitor or test monitor. The wireless receiver, with an operational range of up to 150m, provides two separate video outputs both with audio if required. The EZ-WF comes packaged as a kit and includes power supplies. www.espuk.com

New version software allows self-registration Gallagher Security has announced the launch of v7.10 of its Command Centre integrated security solution. The system, which resides on an organisation’s IT network, integrates electronic access control, intruder alarms management, perimeter security and compliance management in a single scalable platform, providing situational awareness together with command and control. Flexibility is the keynote of v7.10 with new features including cardholder and activity reporting. Re-usable reports can be created in minutes using filters that are reportedly simple to configure, ensuring that the right people receive the right information at the right time. Also new is the touch-screen Visitor Management Kiosk, which allows visitors to undertake self-registration, eliminating the need for front-line staff. The Kiosk is integrated with Command Centre and can be configured to accommodate a wide variety of requirements ensuring control over the site. The system includes the facility for visitors to access and update their visit details and issue their own visitor badge. On completion of sign-in the visitor’s host can automatically be notified of a guest’s arrival via email or SMS. www.security.gallagher.co

New chipset and camera range Samsung Techwin has announced the availability of its new 2MP Full HD (1080P) network camera range. Eight new camera models incorporate the new WiseNetIII DSP chipset. The new Full HD camera range, which can capture images when the lighting level is as low as 0.01 lux, has a frame rate of 60fps at 1080p which results in latency free clear images. This can be particularly beneficial in a scene with moving subjects by ensuring image edges are kept sharp and clear. The enhanced Wide Dynamic Range built into the WiseNetIII DSP chipset, when working with performance greater than 100dB, can produce images in scenes that simultaneously contain very bright and very dark areas, whilst correct colour is maintained by adopting Regional Adaptive Tone Mapping, and motion blur is reduced by using Samsung’s Motion Artefact Reduction technology. P-iris technology optimises the iris when multiple lighting conditions exist within a single field of view to create images with clarity and depth of field. A Defog feature can be used to help improve the clarity of images captured in poor weather conditions such as rain or fog, whilst Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS), previously only seen in analogue chipsets, negates the effects of a camera shaking due to high winds or building vibration. www.samsungsecurity.com

How have the last twelve months been for you and for Samsung? The market itself is very much in a state of flux. The economic conditions we have at the moment have led people to evaluate where they are in their analogue to IP migration strategy. We know that a lot of the new greenfield applications have been IP for some time, but the economic situation has forced people to evaluate where they are with their systems, how they manage existing analogue assets, how quickly they will improve their security systems and how they can reduce the total cost of ownership. We have seen the continuation of tough economic conditions across Europe throughout the second half

security industry forward into new territory and while there are a lot of people with plenty of expertise around delivering security solutions, we all know one of the key movements in IP is making the systems more proactive rather than reactive. This requires a different implementation and delivery of the solution to make proactive based decisions on what video information is giving you, not just in terms of specifying the product, but in how it works and how it interacts with other devices. We have seen things like CCTV and access control systems co-existing and even though this is a low level of integration, it does give an indication that there is an education required. If the installer is trained and technically competent to deliver new solutions such as IP, Cloud etc, then the customer will feel that they are going to get a project delivered properly, on time and fulfilling

see. So if you are viewing a scene of which 80% is not important, why would you want to trigger a motion alarm that pulls the whole picture back? By utilising multi-cropping, which is a feature incorporated in the new range, you can take the important 20% of the scene and stream it back at a higher frame rate and higher quality. The development of multi-cropping is a real, valid application of technology. By coupling this with facial detection, another feature incorporated in the new range, and our other features that genuinely improve surveillance, companies and operators can control what they see. We are meeting a real need rather than just developing something that is not required or even relevant.

What do you think of the news that IFSEC is moving to London in 2014? We think the move to London represents great opportunities. It creates an extra buzz around the show and in ExCeL you have a facility that is designed for these types of exhibitions. The move gives us the chance to break the mould of what we have done at previous events and if you consider the additional cache of being in London rather than Birmingham (no disrespect to the NEC) it potentially positions the event in such a way that you can see that IFSEC is taking a step forward and is continuing to grow. In the tough economic climate, companies are watching marketing costs, but this relocation is sending out a strong message that IFSEC is still the event that the industry should support.

Do you have any predictions for the security market? One of the things I believe we are going to continue to see will be the evolution of the way that we use security systems and the information that is gathered by them. When you consider the world of Big Data, the increased use of metadata and the development of better software solutions all of these are a driver towards giving us better forensic capabilities of video information. This does not mean just making better security management decisions but also allowing you to see additional benefits in terms of business efficiencies and business intelligence. All of which can make security systems work as part of the total solution. We will continue to focus on ensuring our solutions deliver the video quality to support the proactive and effective usage of surveillance solutions irrespective of where you are on the migration curve. The better quality images we can provide allows the customers to better utilise their systems, take preventative measures and operate into the future.

A NEW VENUE FOR 2013! This year the PSI Golf Day and Premier Awards are moving to a new venue, Brocket Hall near Welwyn Garden City. Why not come and join us for the day on 23rd July? 013 will see a new venue for our Golf Day and the Premier Awards, Brocket Hall, one of the most intriguing of any of the great houses of Britain. With a rich and varied history, the scent of scandal can be found in the fabric of the building back to its roots in the 13th Century right up to the present day. Brocket Hall, as it is known today, was built by renowned architect James Paine for the owner Sir Mathew Lamb in 1760. However, the Hall stands on the site of two predecessors, the original of which was built in 1239. One thing that hasn’t changed over the centuries is the warm welcome that Brocket Hall has always extended to its visitors. In the 18th Century, the concept of hotels didn’t really exist and large houses were built not only for the family to live in, but also to give them give them facilities for meeting and entertaining. It is fitting that Brocket Hall today should once again be used for this original purpose, and a pleasure for us to offer such a remarkable venue to our friends and guests for the day. The Premier Awards Dinner will take place during the evening of 23rd July, when we will announce who the winners are of the industry’s only Awards campaign based on the votes of

security technology installers. Following the meal and presentations there will be after-dinner entertainment and the chance to unwind in the luxurious surroundings of Brocket Hall. During the day, the annual PSI Golf Day will pit the skills of the industry’s golfers against each other. With two pristine championship golf courses, the renowned practice facilities of the Palmerston Golf Academy and a charmingly positioned luxury Clubhouse on the banks of the Broadwater Lake, Brocket Hall Golf Club is one of the UK’s most exclusive golf venues and a fantastic venue for our Golf Day. For those looking to stay overnight the Regency stately home boasts 30 luxurious double bedrooms, all of which are named after individuals who have either lived in or been closely associated with Brocket Hall. Its suites are decorated with period antiques, oil paintings and beautiful wallpaper. Providing breath-taking views across the country estate, the luxury accommodation retains a quintessentially British look and feel, while reaching modern standards, befitting Brocket Hall’s international reputation.

We hope you will be able to join us at Brocket Hall this year for a round of golf, awards dinner or both! For more details on taking part contact David Lewis on 0208 295 8309

YEARNING TO KEEP EARNING? Steve Riley – Risco Group When installers are looking for recurring revenue, the traditional method is to offer an annual service/maintenance contract, with the option for additional signalling of high priority alarms to an ARC. With the technological advancement of ‘cloud’ based services which have become commonplace to end users, such as email services like Gmail, telephone banking, or storage solution of which Dropbox is one example, we are now in a position that the security industry must adopt these solutions to continue to meet customers’ expectations. With different notification methods such as the ‘App’ and ‘SMS/email’, the installer can ensure the system still has high security and priority, and by utilising the more modern methods the alarm system can offer other benefits to the end user. The installer could offer home care solutions for the elderly, with notifications if there has not been any movement within the property for a designated length of time. Another is audio capability within the control panel that could enable a two-way conversation with ARC or keyholder. Delivering non-urgent notifications such as mains failure, or system set/unset wouldn’t require a telephone call after each of these activities is carried out, and the end-user would prefer confirmation by email or text. Most people today are using cloud technology in their daily lives, with these technologies increasing daily, and many may not even be aware they are using it. We believe that the industry will need to adapt to this technological development.

Simon Banks – CSL Communications Group Increasing efficiency and performance is key to increasing recurring revenue. It is essential to strengthen and protect your current services before accepting new ventures or stretching too far. Adding value to your product is also important when trying to increase revenue and retain the customers you already have. The quality of your team should be a key focus as they are the face of your company. You could consider hiring graduates and/or apprentices; they can demonstrate that you are a progressive company that’s supporting fresh talent with energy and innovation, something that will bode well with your customers. Don’t underestimate the importance of marketing

www.psimagazine.co.uk

and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The more a potential customer sees your company name, the more likely they are to consider you when making a purchase. In terms of the types of technology that can secure a contract and result in increased income it would be beneficial to look at the types of products you regularly install. If possible, increase your product range to include some vertical market business streams, such as fire systems or physical security. Research has proven that companies with a high proportion of premium or dual signalling increases the company’s value and therefore it’s ‘exit multiple’ should the company consider a change of ownership or invite outside investment. Lastly, if you can cater to all of your customers’ security needs they will be less likely to divide their business and allegiance between your company and your competitors.

It’s good to get new contracts but how can you raise your levels of recurring revenue? The PSI Panel provides some tips…

Gary Frith – RSI Video Technologies The advent of Smartphones and Apps has provided end users with a greater ability to interact with their security systems and this presents a massive new opportunity for the industry to market new services to end users that provide genuine added value. Small business owners can now, for example, be provided with an App to view CCTV footage of their business at any time, and new video alarm systems with look in capability can allow home owners to take a video or snapshot and check in on their house when on holiday. Apps provide the installer with the opportunity to charge for the service itself as well as potentially make a mark up on the SIM card (if GPRS is used). There is also the opportunity to wrap up a maintenance fee within a monthly service fee to ensure that the customer signs up for ongoing maintenance. The “bells only” residential market represents a particular area of opportunity, with the option of offering a self-monitoring App , possibly backed up to a monitoring station in the event that the homeowner doesn’t respond to an alarm activation notification within a specified period of time. A final piece of advice is to be different to other local installers in some way, try and find at least one

“door opener” product or service, and, in light of the new App trends, get into the habit of selling customers what they want rather than just what they need.

Stefan Hay – Fire & Security Association New technology provides us with a host of opportunities to increase recurring revenue. One of the most important consumer trends of the last five years has been the exponential growth of smartphone use, which has put impressive computing power into the hands of everyone. The potential is enormous. After all, clients are used to the idea to be able to control their TV or their oven from their phone at home. Therefore on a business level, they also are likely to be interested in being able to view CCTV coverage, interact with their alarm system and control their lighting from the same device. The last couple of years have seen smart devices become the norm rather than the exception, and we need to keep up with these expectations. Therefore, installers looking to capitalise on this potential revenue stream need to ensure they fully understand the technology. It’s about changing a mindset; from simply cabling, to networking. Beyond providing more flexible ways to monitor security, there’s the opportunity to provide an integrated service which will deliver a more comprehensive security package – something that is bound to act as a market differentiator. For instance, by using a variety of ‘smart’ IP components, lighting and locks can be connected to smoke detectors or cameras. This could be then used to intelligently manage escape routes or to isolate critical areas in an emergency. In addition to increased safety and security, these systems could reduce power consumption costs through lighting management, for example. In short, a security installer could deliver a client not only a more effective, flexible and safer system – but one that will also save the client money in the long run. Obviously, not all clients will want a system this complex or advanced, but it would certainly make sense to ensure that the option is available to them. Because inevitably, there will be a client out there for whom that flexibility and saving could be the dealbreaker.

Julie Kenny – Pyronix Wireless technology is the progressive way forward to secure more business, reduce costs and improve income 32

Recurring revenue is a great way to achieve a sustainable long term business and most business advisors will tell you that increasing revenue per head from existing customers is by far the most cost effective way to grow and sustain a thriving business. With this in mind, here are a few tips that could help installers increase their levels of recurring revenue. Generally it is much more attractive for customers

to pay monthly than annually. Costs appear smaller and are much easier to budget. Setting up an automated monthly fee is more likely to appeal to most customers, rather than the shock of receiving a sizeable invoice once a year. The latter just serves to remind you to look elsewhere. Finding and offering ‘value added’ services that easily integrate with your core offering, for example remote servicing, remote data requests, SMS service and providing battery replacements are all ways to increase revenue without a significant increase in costs. Monthly charging supports the promotion of additional services by cushioning the customer from the significant impact of any increase in costs. Since the customer interface for most installers are their engineers, it is important that installers understand the vital role that engineers play in promoting additional business and value added services. As long as the balance is right, offering incentives to engineers to sell upgrades, promote new offerings and ‘value added’ services may be an excellent, cost effective marketing tool. Of course this can be supported by mail and electronic marketing to customers. A further idea that combines the relationship with existing customer’s and growing the customer base involves offering ‘recommend to a friend’ bonuses to existing customers. Wireless technology is the progressive way forward to secure more business, reduce costs and improve income. It offers real benefits to both the end user and installer alike. When the alarm is installed, an end user wants the process to run smoothly with as little disruption as possible. The fact that there is no need to remove carpets, lift floor boards or channel cables and that installs take around half the time of wired systems, means both customers and installers can share the benefits over conventional wired systems.

Ian Tredinnick – Chiron The lion’s share of revenue in the security industry is taken by the alarm monitoring sector – and crucially it is recurring revenue. For installers the best opportunities lie in winning more of this income by providing efficient maintenance and service contracts. It’s often described, somewhat gloomily, as a competitive market with lots of businesses competing over the same ‘stagnant pool of customers’ – but don’t let others put you off. There are now very good opportunities for installers who get ahead of the UK market with systems such as direct-polled AoIP solutions, just as they are doing in other, similar markets. With old-style fixed-line alarm monitoring it is obviously quite difficult to generate good income with these contracts because dealing with system problems

EDIT panel may13_PSI_may13 25/04/2013 12:19 Page 3

SMOKE DETECTION

often requires site visits and guesswork – which is resource intensive – and the line charges are quite high. But installers can use IP alarm monitoring technology to increase profitability. With faster remote upload/download speeds AoIP has proven itself, and has stripped a lot of the costs out of maintenance, increasing margins for installers. Our experience shows how well this works for installers in European markets –here the adoption of IP alarms is well ahead, and maintenance contracts are profitable and so well worth providing. How does that help UK installers increase recurring revenue? Well there’s nothing intrinsically different about installing and maintaining systems in Europe – it’s only a few miles away – and installers in the UK can use exactly the same technology. They can win maintenance and service business by giving customers better deals than they get with fixed line solutions – ie. better monitoring control, more management information, faster trouble-shooting, more regular software updates – and lower prices. The UK market for AoIP maybe well behind some others – but in that lag there lies a huge opportunity. Installers who get a head start now and grow in this business first will do well.

John Fisk – IDIS

Health check monitoring is becoming more and more important as end users want to avoid any down time of a system, device or component across their security operation and reduce the costs associated with maintenance. Installers should check that any systems they install come with a control management system (CMS) to enable them to use remote diagnostics to proactively provide maintenance and identify faults before the end user. This not only helps provide a preventative maintenance service but also helps installers reduce their operating costs across existing and new maintenance contracts. Whereas before they reacted to every fault driving to customer sites, they can prevent faults before they happen by identifying components that need replacing during routine maintenance visits. In addition, many CMS packages allow diagnostics across mobile devices enabling an engineer to simply diagnose and often fix a problem from a smartphone. All of this will make installers more competitive and help win and secure lucrative maintenance contracts. Many in the industry may not realise that the data collected through various electronic security systems such as CCTV and access provides powerful and intelligent business insight. Take for example retail, CCTV data across days, weeks or even months can provide marketing insights such as whether a new promotion is working by increasing footfall and whether customers linger longer to consider a purchase. Linked to point of sale (POS) data this provides a very tangible and valuable source of

www.psimagazine.co.uk

intelligent business information. With the right analytics and data mining packages, a security installer has a very different customer – the marketing department of a retail store. Similarly, if we look at shopping centres an installer can help security departments understand where and when manned guarding is required. By analysing footfall combined with events such as promotions or popular gift buying seasons end users can ensure they only increase shifts or hire in more guards precisely when and where they are needed. This type of activity and service, which helps customers reduce cost and streamline operations, is the difference between being an installer and becoming an end user’s long-term security partner.

Todd Rockoff – HDcctv Alliance There are two ways to create recurring revenue: Deliver recurring value, and deliver complex systems that require recurring attention. The best examples of recurring value are monitoring and alarm verification capabilities; end customers love to be able to keep an eye on the premises remotely, and it’s very reasonable to charge a monthly fee to ensure that the remote access continues to work correctly. The other method is used all too frequently in our industry. Many installers have been successful, at least once, convincing a customer to adopt IP cameras. Ethernet transport of video within the customer’s premises often requires more attention than set-it-andforget-it CCTV and HDcctv transport. The installer might be able to demand recurring revenues to address on-going I.T. issues. However, in the cases where that Ethernet video is less fit for purpose than the alternatives, the installer is asking the end customer to pay more to get less. That’s a situation that may increase recurring revenues for a short period of time, but it’s unsustainable, because in an efficient market, the customer will eventually find an alternative installer who can give better value for money.

An installer’s ability to provide a range of solutions is an important differentiator and diversifying into new areas will ultimately make them more robust

Daniel Wan – Honeywell Security The tough economy and shrinking investment in large-scale security projects means increasingly eroding margins for installers. Installers can no longer rely on just one piece of the technology mix – access control, CCTV, or intruder alarms – they need to diversify in order to survive and thrive. An installer’s ability to provide a range of solutions is an important differentiator and diversifying into new areas will ultimately make them more robust. Installers who change their business model and adapt to new ways of selling systems, can offer customers attractive (continued on page 36)

THE HD BREAKTHROUGH The Bosch stand at IFSEC this year will be 100% CCTV dedicated and predominantly HD focused. Here we find out what visitors can see at Hall 4 stand E75 from Paul Wong, Managing Director, of Bosch Security UK

So the big product news from Bosch is the Starlight range. Tell us what is so special about it? The Starlight range of products provide high quality HD images in tough lighting conditions tough meaning, where you have bright and dark scenes in the same field of view or in low light conditions. Our Dinion wide dynamic range of cameras is considered by many in the industry as the go to range of products if you want to achieve high quality images in an external environment. Our new Starlight HD range of cameras now outperform our Dinion cameras, which many industry commentators did not think would be achievable with today’s chip technology. The reason being that a HD chip requires many more pixels on the chip surface than an SD chip. To fit more pixels onto a chip then obviously the pixels need to be physically smaller. And smaller pixels have a smaller surface area to capture the light, therefore HD/Megapixel performance in low light has until now been an inferior option than SD technology... until now that is. In addition to the above the second challenge presented to installers/end users whom have wanted to leverage the benefit of HD cameras is the cost of the infrastructure/storage to support the high data demand that a HD quality imaging device requires. The Starlight’s second key benefit is that it can provide you with HD quality at relatively low bit rates, thus significant savings can be achieved on infrastructure and even more so on storage requirements. We have demonstrated that our HD Starlight cameras require less bandwidth than our old MPEG4 Dinion IP SD range. So our customers gain the benefit of HD quality without the additional costs of supporting HD cameras. Apparently they use up to 30% less bandwidth than other systems, how is this achieved and what are the benefits of this breakthrough? This is one of our key USPs; we achieve this through a technology that our R&D engineers have developed called CBIT (Content Based Imaging Technology). CBIT uses our own VCA (video content analysis) engine which dynamically changes the settings of the camera 34

such that the optimum image is achieved no matter what the conditions at the time. Our on board analytics acts like a resident on-site engineer constantly optimising the camera settings. Optimisation in terms of image quality achieved and reduction of the bit rate output. We remove noise from the image which is especially valuable in low light conditions, and content that is of no value to the user. If this unnecessary content is removed at source (i.e. in the camera) then you don’t need the enhanced infrastructure you may require to transmit it or the additional storage hardware to record it. Thus, saving the customer money. So it is CBIT which enables the customer to enjoy the benefits of HD without the cost.

Another big development is in the form of the transcoding technology you’ve developed which promises useable video and Full HD static images. What are the benefits of this? Transcoding is not new technology but it is new to our industry, and especially in a hardware format. The benefit is that we can transmit HD quality images over a poor link such as PSTN or 3G or just generally a low bandwidth network. Transcoding dynamically monitors the link and provides the best useable image possible for the amount of connectivity available. This is of great value if the existing connection is limited or if you’re in a wireless/mobile environment. An example of the benefit is where you’re trying to remotely track a moving object such as a car or a person and your available connectivity is limited. Transcoding will dynamically adjust the image quality down so that you’re still able to track the object effectively, upon pausing the image a full quality image will be presented to the user. Meanwhile, the images have been recording at high quality locally. As mentioned earlier are solution is a hardware solution meaning that the customer does not have to invest in expensive PC hardware & software to achieve the benefits of transcoding Openness is key for optimum integration so how is Bosch partnering with other companies to achieve this goal? What is the IPP all about? IPP is our ‘Integration Partner Programme’. We have invested heavily in resource to achieve the aims of the programme, which is to be integrated into other manufacturers’ products. The whole aim of this is to ensure that our customers have minimal fuss when looking to integrate products; additionally we believe that end users should have choice. This openness provides peace of mind to end users when investing in Bosch products. We will carry this philosophy forward ensuring that we are integrated further with key partner manufacturers. We currently have partners such as Genetec & Milestone to name but a few and you will hear more of in the near future.

BOSCH

INTRODUCING... Starlight cameras ith the development of its next generation of mega pixel cameras, DINION starlight HD 720p and FLEXIDOME starlight HD 720p RD, Bosch Security Systems can now introduce cameras that are specifically designed for high performance in extreme low-light conditions. The new cameras represent a breakthrough in light sensitivity in cameras; showing colour images where others can show only black and white and showing black and white where others show no image at all.

W

HD security breakthrough With their high sensitivity in both colour (0.017 lux) and monochrome modes (0.0057 lux), the HD cameras work with minimal ambient light, delivering clear images in a multitude of applications, even where poor lighting is the principle challenge. The 60 fps frame rate helps capture fast-moving objects in applications such as traffic and casinos.

Breakthrough imaging The Starlight cameras come with Content Based Imaging Technology (CBIT). This Bosch innovation intelligently combines information from the sensor, image pipe, encoder and intelligent video analysis (IVA) to dynamically optimise the image for every scene. Bosch CBIT-enabled cameras feature two special modes: Intelligent Auto Exposure (iAE), which ensures the optimal image of important objects and iDNR provides the most usable image possible by cleverly optimising the detail-to-bandwidth ratio. By using this intelligent noise reduction technology (iDNR), the image clarity is improved, and the storage requirements are reduced significantly. The 720p starlight HD camera requires up to 30% less bandwidth than other 720p and SD cameras.

Use everywhere, view from anywhere The unique FLEXIDOME RD is designed for demanding, outdoor applications. The rugged cast-aluminium dome housing can withstand the equivalent of 55 kg (120 lbs) of force and the extended operating temperature range of the camera makes it ideal for any application extreme temperatures and vandal-prone areas are only two examples. A choice of installation options includes flush, wall, and pipe mounting. The extensive range of factory-installed Super Resolution HD lenses covers a focal length range from 1.8mm ultra wide angle to a 40mm telephoto. By applying the Bosch Dynamic Transcoding Technology, HD quality images can be viewed from any location that has access to the internet, even if the available bandwidth is only 128kBit/s. The video streams can be viewed from your iPad or browser, the free Bosch Viewing Client, or the Bosch Video Management System.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Easy migration to High Definition (HD) Because they can deliver consistently reliable images in all lighting conditions, the 720p HD cameras are expected to replace SD cameras and as such, can be considered the new standard for professional video surveillance systems. “The introduction of these high-performance HD cameras at a similar price level as SD cameras underlines our commitment to constantly improve our range of security cameras, and accelerates the transition from analogue to IP,” says Constant Rutten, Product Manager at Bosch Security Systems.

Certified interoperability All DINION starlight and FLEXIDOME starlight cameras conform to the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF), which guarantees interoperability between network video products regardless of the manufacturer.

Bosch delivers plug-and-play HD video management The DIVAR IP series of all-in-one video management systems combine a network recorder, storage array, client workstation and integrated software for simple and affordable HD video management. This “system-in-a-box” design delivers true plug-and-play operation, reducing installation time by as much as 50 percent.

Advanced video management The appliances provide recording, viewing and export for high definition, megapixel and standard definition resolutions. The powerful and intuitive user interface displays streams in the 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios simultaneously, and offers interactive site maps, sophisticated playback controls and powerful search utilities. Advanced alarm processing ensures the most critical events are identified and managed, and extensive integration capabilities include support for ONVIF conformant devices, ATM/POS data and Bosch’s Intelligent Video Analysis for automated detection of security risks.

Scalable systems The DIVAR IP 3000 supports up to 32 channels with up to 8 TB of front-swappable storage. It is ideal for smaller installations, such as retail, education, banking and similar applications. The DIVAR IP 7000 also comes pre-licensed for 32 channels and can be easily expanded for growing systems. Internal hot-swappable storage supports up to 16 TB of recorded video. Customers can also add the new DIVAR IP 2000 and 6000 storage devices to all models in the series when greater capacity is required.

Break through the bandwidth barrier Customers can use the integrated operating client, remote operating client, or built-in web application to view video and manage digital recordings from any location via LAN, WAN or the Internet. The new Video Security App from Bosch also enables viewing HD video remotely with an iPad. The app combines with Bosch’s Dynamic Transcoding Technology to deliver high resolution video playback within limited bandwidth connections. Dynamic Transcoding synchronises the available bandwidth and image quality to enable customers to view Bosch HD video immediately, from anywhere.

packages to pay for their system for example over its lifetime. This provides installers with the opportunity to add to the contracts, value-added services such as remote video monitoring or enhanced reporting, that generate recurring revenue. Investing in technology that enables remote maintenance and Remote Routine Inspection services is a quick win. For an installer who is used to charging for call-outs, the idea of billing a client for a service that is essentially performed with the click of a few buttons is hard to envisage. However some installers are already adding an on-going maintenance charge that they bill to customers on a monthly or quarterly basis. Within this, charges for remote maintenance can be incorporated. While maintenance contracts are a vital source of recurring revenue for installers, installers should also be considering new offerings in order secure contracts and help increase their revenue streams. With the advent of mobile apps more people are now looking to cloud services, such as Software as a Service (SaaS) and Video Surveillance as a Service (VsaaS). In 2013, hosted VsaaS solutions are expected to be one of the fastest growing sources of revenue for the industry, providing a recurring profit-generating monthly revenue source for installers. The growth of apps will also demand a revolution in the user interfaces currently used in security systems. As technology develops at an ever-increasing rate, keypads will be replaced by touchscreen controls, and access cards will make way for smartphones. This evolution in the user experience will present opportunities for progressive, tech-savvy installers to upgrade existing systems and drive further revenue. Another potential source of revenue comes from the ability to create custom solutions. Flexible Software Development Kits (SDKs) will allow integrators to create custom made solutions that meet the unique challenges of end-users. Developing codes and applications to sell on to third parties represents another area that installers can focus on in order to grow their business.

Bill MacGregor – Corps Security I know of one installation company that had £3.5m worth of installation contracts and £1.2m in recurring maintenance and monitoring-based work in 2010 36

The current economic climate is forcing security installers to look beyond their traditional revenue streams. While businesses that concentrate on installations are seeing ever decreasing margins, those that are prepared to diversify and embrace new technology are reaping the rewards. Any installers that are not yet involved with Internet protocol (IP) based systems need to do so before they get left behind. However, those that have but are still not exploiting the use of UDL upload download software to remotely monitor, maintain and configure their clients’ security systems are missing a trick. Let me explain why. Most CCTV and intruder alarm

installations are sold with maintenance contracts that include additional charges for any call outs. While these contracts used to last for anything up to seven years, nowadays a two-year duration is the norm, meaning that their long-term revenue generating potential has declined dramatically. What’s more, customers are increasingly reluctant to pay call out fees. UDL upload download software facilitates off-site programming by displaying full diagnostics and event logs, and remotely arming/disarming the system. This negates the need for a physical response to alarm activation as installers can interrogate the control panel remotely and carry out any necessary remedial work. As a result, a UDL based service means that an installer does not have to charge a call out fee and, in turn, an end user is more likely to agree to a longer contract as they view it as hassle free. For some companies, this has transformed the nature of their businesses. I know of one installation company that had £3.5m worth of installation contracts and £1.2m in recurring maintenance and monitoring-based work in 2010. In 2012 its installation revenue had reduced by over 50 per cent due to tough trading conditions, yet its recurring business increased by £400,000 thanks in large part to the use of UDL technology. There are currently around 3,500 accredited security system installers in the UK and as few as 250 are currently offering UDL. My advice is to seriously consider this as a way to alleviate the pressure of low margins by focusing more on monitoring and maintenance and less on the installation itself.

Chris Carter Brennan – WebWayOne It’s very difficult to increase annual fees for intruder monitoring with end users, but installers can make sure that every minute and every penny spent on the service has benefit for them. Looking at the supply chain installers should ensure that they are in control of when they buy equipment, how easy the system is to administer and commission and when signalling systems monitoring is charged. Nobody should pay for any signalling until as close to the installation date as possible, not before. Technology can solve the thorny problem of excessive dial up costs for digital communicators. Reducing the cost of a digi by stopping signalling test calls and open/close only has one end result – the ultimate disconnection of the signalling. GSM/GPRS or IP only signalling solutions can be very low cost to run, but include all the polling, alarm transmission and management needed to solve the issue. PSTN (telephone line) and ADSL (broadband) services will compete for some time for the share of installers favour, ultimately “packet” or internet based

networks such as broadband, GPRS and 3G will always be cheaper to run than analogue lines – and have the capability to transmit more information. Selling dual path signalling installers should look for products which have low ongoing fees, but where every penny works for them as well as the end user. Signalling products need to monitor networks, signal alarms and provide a secure UDL solution without modems or call charges. Installers should look for value added services from ATS providers such as browser based management information or downloadable software – designed to reduce key holder and field engineer visits. However, the management data presented should be useful and concise, providing a solution to diagnose issues or advise end users of a root cause. Systems and software should not be technology for technology’s sake. New services such as event verification with images can add security and differentiate a sale. If the specification requires verification, either installer image verification immediately or inform the end user that the product can support low cost verification in the event of a lost URN or incident. To improve operational costs for installers and reduce unnecessary visits and interruption for end users installer should look for systems which use secure, efficient, fast and low cost networks to deliver data which will improve the information delivered to enable the reduction in costs.

Dave Profit – SSAIB These are tough trading conditions for installers, so keeping up with market trends and legislation changes will help identify fresh revenue opportunities. For instance, changes in the fire sector mean a ‘responsible person’ or ‘duty holder’ for a building must now ensure that a fire risk assessment is completed. Meanwhile, in the security market, protecting potentially vulnerable sites including construction sites and vacant premises using temporary alarm systems is another growth area. Installers could also examine telecare (social alarms), since government strategy is focused on helping the elderly and disabled to remain in their own homes. Telecare will therefore become an increasingly important part of social and healthcare services, offering significant diversification opportunities. Customer service improvements are also an important, but sometimes overlooked, contribution towards increasing recurring revenue. For instance, marketing benefits through pass on, or word of mouth, recommendation by satisfied customers offer solid trading advantages that shouldn’t be ignored.

Simplifying the process of installation to reduce labour time for installation companies allows extra revenue to drop to the bottom line 38

These difficult economic times mean it’s important to make doubly sure that all of the service bases are covered, for instance by responding to enquiries promptly and providing clear written quotations that contain all of the relevant information a client may need. It may seem obvious, but sometimes it’s worth re-examining the way things have been done in the past to plug any gaps and make a tangible difference in future. Equally, ensuring that the services you provide are of the highest possible quality, comply with relevant standards and are promoted to clients, will make a sizeable contribution towards gaining business. If any customer is dissatisfied with your service, then having clear mechanisms and defined procedures to deal with complaints quickly, thoroughly and fairly will help to resolve the problem, defuse negative client feeling and retain their recurring custom.

Kim Loy – Xtralis Remote Monitoring Simplifying the process of installation to reduce labour time for installation companies allows extra revenue to drop to the bottom line. The simplification of the installation partnered with technologies that can be deployed and used remotely lower the costs of installation and increases the services that can be charged for and create additional recurring revenue streams. Good examples of additional services that can be sold and will help ensure a contract are the applications currently developed and continuing to be developed for iOS, Android and Windows to be used on SmartPhones. There are more and more applications being introduced that allow for remote viewing of cameras, delivery of alarm information, audio to the site via the installed equipment that provide reassurances and proactive monitoring directly by the property manager/owner of their facilities in addition of being monitored by their contracted central monitoring station. There are also applications being developed that allow for more efficient installation and commission of systems. The ability for one technician to calibrate and set-up a video analytics system is a big advance and saves considerable amount of time. In addition, there are applications that have been designed for the set-up and commissioning of PIR systems. These types of applications allow for the technician to adjust the PIR without having to repeatedly climb the pole and adjust the PIR manually. It can all be done from the application. Again, this not only reduces the amount of labour required for the initial installation; it also provides easier ways of providing maintenance on equipment. In both cases, the installer’s cost goes down which results in higher profits on a monthly basis.

PTZ CAMERAS

PTZ – THE ULTIMATE VIEW? There are those who will tell you that a single PTZ can be used to replace a number of static cameras, however it is a combination of the two that often gives best surveillance results

he PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera has established itself as the ideal solution for the remote tracking of individuals and vehicles. For those operating in public areas such as high streets the ability of the PTZ to be able to rotate and turn in order to follow the movement of a person under suspicion makes it more useful than a static camera would be. Obviously, the static camera also has its role to play in the operation, it is often the statics that are focused on a single scene that pick up the initial incident for the monitoring centre to then use the PTZ to track any further movement. PTZ cameras come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and can be used internally and externally. For outdoor use there are vandal-proof domes and ruggedized cameras made of stainless steel featuring wiper blades to keep the screen clear. We heard last year of one unit that has been installed for use in the protection of a lighthouse and had been tested as saltwater-proof. The internal units are commonplace in retail premises and the British public has become familiar with the domes inside shops, pubs and trains and so they also add a visible deterrent to crime. The growth in IP dome sales has accelerated at a faster rate over the last few years as a result of increases in image resolution and latency reductions. HD PTZ domes give the added advantage of digitally zooming in to the image with much less deterioration on the image quality. However the PTZ does come with its own inherent expense; it needs a human at the end of it – obviously not permanently viewing images 24/7 but on-hand in case tracking is needed. This has led to some sectors, in the light of budget cuts, not specifying, requesting or commissioning PTZs as Ian Galloway of JVC explained to us last year:

T

“I’ve found there’s generally a decline in PTZ growth in the industry, since companies can’t afford the security guards to monitor and control them. Many schools used to use PTZs but most have changed to static cameras as they cover most areas without needing handson management.” The development of video analytics has led many companies to opt for having static cameras fitted so that they can benefit from features such as motion detection, proximity etc. The PTZ is, by its nature, designed to move around which could prevent them from making use of certain video analytics functions depending on the application. Furthermore the camera tour, in which the operator views a series of images to cover an area, is not traditionally the realm of the PTZ. Experts believe that an area tour is better done by using a number of static cameras that all look continuously at a scene rather than a single camera that moves from one scene to the next. The most ideal surveillance applications are those therefore that combine the use of static and PTZ cameras. This is commonly where the operator will pick up movement in one of the static cameras and then uses the PTZs to get a

clearer picture of the potential threat such as sites that cover large areas, used in conjunction with external alarms to drive the PTZ to a pre-set location that cover the area triggered by the alarm. Other areas in which the PTZ cameras offer benefits include sites where the installation of cabling is tricky, such as on major roads, town centres where the operator can cover large areas and also retail outlets that link the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) system to the PTZ dome alarm inputs. As for price concerns, a PTZ dome is more expensive per unit than a static camera and you need to factor in the human element of the package as well however, insiders believe that one installed PTZ dome will have a lower cost than that of four installed static cameras especially if you consider the cost of re-installing a site when it does not meet the expectations of the end-user. Therefore if the price of a PTZ is the governing factor in their use then it could be said that the requirements of the site and customers

The features of PTZ As discussed, the PTZ could be the ultimate add-on for an existing CCTV installation. To get the best out of a unit it needs to be operator driven, where the operator can track objects in a scene and react to an incident to gain improved clarity of the situation. To help the operator the PTZ domes have a number of features including; Presets and tours: where the operator does not have to remember where critical locations are. At the press of a button the PTZ will return to the same position. Alarm inputs: where an alarm will automatically sent to a pre-determined location at the same time as the alarm is initiated. Schedule: where the dome will move to outof –hours positions automatically without the

42

have not been fully understood. As we mentioned the four static cameras can give you a more efficient tour and, with the use of analytics, can also trigger the operator into using the PTZ to take the surveillance procedure onto the next step. As the price of both analogue and IP static cameras is low (there are now IP cameras on the market for less than £100) it makes sense to use these in combination with the more expensive PTZ to create a surveillance and tracking system making best use of all features (see boxout). The next time you are asked to improve the surveillance at a site, do not think of replacing a number of static cameras with a single PTZ, but think whether or not adding a PTZ to the arrangement might be the answer - especially if the application would benefit from remote tracking. Of course, today we have 360° cameras that can give you an overview of a huge area allowing users to digitally zoom into the area for more information, so compared to the static cameras that give you a 90° view this is another option that could be installed alongside existing units to improve the performance of the whole system. For example fitting a 360° dome camera to the central area of a site would give an overall image of what happens while the static cameras target individual areas/blind spots while the PTZ does the tracking in the event of an alarm. intervention of the operator. Privacy zones: as PTZ domes can view many locations, some of these may include areas of sensitivity. The PTZ domes privacy masking feature will obscure these. Auto Tracking: The PTZ will automatically pick up movement in specific locations and automatically track the intruder without the intervention of the operator. Built-in LED illumination: illuminate with IR light only the areas of interest and not the whole site. Intelligent Video Analytics: Not only will the dome pick up movement but it will also react to quite specific actions, such as entering and exiting an area, crossing a virtual line, objects that suddenly appear or disappear in a location and scene change.

PRODUCT TEST Samsung SRD-1673DP 16 Channel Video Recorder he Samsung SRD-1673DP is the latest addition to the SRD DVR product line and offers a maximum resolution of 960 X 480 with a real time recording rate in a continuous or event based schedule. The 16 recording channels each have their own audio and alarm input as well as 4 alarm outputs supplied via dry relay contacts. Images can be viewed on the DVR’s Full HD 1080p HDMI output or using the more traditional VGA or 2 composite spot monitors. The unit can also be supplied as a 4 or 8 channel recorder with the option of an SVS-5R which is an additional storage unit for up to 4TB in a RAID1 or RAID 5 configuration. Network bandwidth has been reporting increased in this latest unit to allow for better remote viewing. According to Peter Ainsworth, Senior Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe : “There are countless existing CCTV systems which include cameras that are able to capture high quality colour images at 650TV lines, but the images are being recorded on DVRs which are only capable of playing back the recorded images at 480TV lines. By simply swapping these DVRs with models equipped with 960H technology, users can now achieve an immediate improvement in the resolution of the live or recorded images that can be displayed on a high definition monitor. We believe this method of upgrading an existing analogue system will prove to be popular among customers who do not yet have sufficient reason to change to a Video over IP system, or where investment in the latest generation of high definition cameras can be justified.”

Once logged in we were presented with a clean and easy to follow configuration screen where the system was quickly setup 44

The test Out of the box the Samsung DVR is supplied with a ‘Quick Manual’ that shows in multiple languages how to set up the unit with its

peripheral and some of the software functions including how to access via your PC, via a browser. A full manual is also supplied on CD and this details everything the installation engineer needs to know from the installation of additional hard drives up to how to troubleshoot the unit. Upon powering the unit, which took just over a minute, we access the main menu where we were presented with a logon screen where the paper ‘Quick Manual’ did not reveal the password. This was quickly guessed without needing to use the full manual as found on the CD. Once logged in we were presented with a clean and easy to follow configuration screen where the system was quickly setup with no searching the manual for answers for any ‘too hard to understand’ questions the DVR might throw our way. Our main observation was with the ‘copy to all channels’ feature that was available when setting the recording schedule but was not available when setting the resolution and quality of each camera. Within the configuration of the system lay some very nice options including the ability to set the auto delete storage time of the recording images, DDNS support by some of the free providers (Dynamic Domain Name System allows you to access the DVR from the internet while it is on your private network), SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol is an IP network management protocol for the status of the hardware), video lost and tampering detection alarms for the camera inputs as well as an overview of the hard drive status. Once configured and running the inbuilt DVR software offers all of the functions you would expect in the way of tile layouts, live and playback screens. Switching between live and recorded images was quick and did not display any notable delays to the operator. The search feature returned the list of alarm footage quickly as well as displaying the images associated with the alarms. Playback speed is incremental up to a X64 speed. We did find using the time bar hard to fine select a time to view once playing; when the operator is defining the time to play they can

Switching between live and recorded images was quick and did not display any notable delays to the operator The DVR is also supplied with Samsung’s Smart Viewer software which allows the DVR’s images to be accessed via a PC. Again configuration was simple with the Smart Viewer software scanning the network to locate all available DVR’s and allowing the commissioning engineer a fast and simple way to add the DVR to the software. Once running a simple graphic interface allowed us to perform the all the functions as expected of a CCTV system. One other feature worth mentioning of the DVR is smartphone support giving the user the ability to access the live images, control the PTZ cameras and view recorded images. We hope to bring you a report on this feature in the future.

Summary expand the time bar to get an accurate time and it would be nice to carry on this functionality once in playback mode. Video export of a single camera for a 5 minute slot was produced and burned onto a CD in less than 3 minutes. The burned CD contains a nice webpage front end that allows the user to see the footage start and stop date time as well as the file size. When selecting the file to play it is important to make sure the internet browser software that is being used plays the footage and does not download it to the local machine otherwise an error is seen as the CD contains some software that is needed to make the footage play.

In summary the Samsung SRD-1673DP DVR offers an installer with an easy to install digital recorder which is rich in features that the modern systems require to operate in clients premises. With the addition of the Smart Viewer software a complete system can easily be created and managed.

NATIONAL LIBRARY UPGRADES SECURITY MANAGEMENT G4S Technology has installed the Symmetry Version 7 Security Management System at The National Library of Scotland. he Library is Scotland’s largest, housing around 15 million printed items, including approximately two million maps, across two sites – Causewayside and their George IV Bridge Building, in Edinburgh. The Library contacted G4S Technology because they were looking to re-assess and install additional access control across these two locations. A bespoke solution was developed to meet the Library’s current needs whilst also being flexible enough to adapt to changing requirements. The major extension to their access control took place last year and this year the Library was one of the first sites in the UK to be upgraded to Symmetry Version 7. The new software expands the management system into a complete security platform capable of managing all site security functions via a single interface. CCTV cameras chosen for TV documentary Custom studio production services provider Roll to Record has updated its portfolio with 64 Panasonic AWHE50 HD integrated pan-tilt remote cameras The cameras will be used to shoot the follow-up series of Twofour’s ‘Educating Essex’; an observational documentary that follows a group of GCSE students and their teachers. It is imperative for Roll to Record to select unobtrusive, reliable and highly capable equipment to meet the demands of reality television. One reason why the Panasonic AW-HE50 was chosen was its small form factor, integrating camera, lens, and pan-tilt functionality into a compact and lightweight body for quiet and concealed

operability; a fundamental element in the production of observational documentaries. Along with well-concealed operation, the AW-HE50’s 1/3 type full-HD MOS sensor and digital signal processor (DSP) along with Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) and Hybrid (2D/3D) Digital Noise Reduction (Hybrid DNR), enables Roll to Record to deliver clear and realistic HD video even in low lighting conditions. Smoke detectors for Dubai Airport

Biometric system for office access control

The recently opened new Concourse A of Dubai International Airport has had 265 Fireray end-toend infrared beam smoke detectors installed as part of its fire protection system. There are now a total of 860 Fireray products installed throughout the airport’s four terminals. The new concourse is the first in the world built to accommodate the giant Airbus A380, resulting in a public space of 528,000 sq m spread across eleven floors, and the capacity to handle 15 million passengers a year. The lounges span the entire length of the concourse, making them the largest in the world, and feature high ceilings throughout. The first Fireray products were installed in the airport 15 years ago and the latest installation of 265 Fireray end-to-end units was supplied by Jamal al Majid, local Dubai agent for Edwards. www.ffeuk.com

The £4.5m Allam Marine offices building within East Yorkshire has chosen biometric fingerprint readers to control the buildings access. Allam Marine needed a particular finish for the door access system together with a specific set of access requirements. The ievo install involved a boon edam circlelock entrance, which allowed for standard access along with secondary opening actions from dedicated readers elsewhere in the building. One of the main benefits of the system is the ability to “latch” open the circle lock in the event of corporate open days, together with full biometric accountability. Martin Conley, IT Manager Allam Marine said: “The bespoke circle lock access system at our Melton site was the first one of its kind in the UK using ievo biometric access solutions. Since the installation with Cobus we have been extremely satisfied with the installation which has met our demands and it is outperforming all of our initial expectations.” The access control system works by members registering their print upon joining the business. This print now acts as the identification method, replacing the traditional identification card. When the member arrives at the offices they simply press their finger onto the reader and this opens the first door of the Circlelock. The Circlelock consists of two sliding doors, which will open one after the other, creating an interlocking security booth. The access-control system is a bidirectional security door allowing entry and exit in turn. www.ievoreader.com

IFSEC 2013

IFSEC 2013 IS HERE! This month the security industry heads to the Birmingham NEC for its annual installer event, IFSEC, featuring co-located show Firex running alongside. Here is an overview of what visitors can look forward to seeing

Raytec

NVT

Raytec will be launching their new range of VARIO IP Network Illuminators at IFSEC 2013. VARIO IP is available in both Infra-Red and White-Light and provides dedicated IP lighting allowing for remote set up, commissioning, operation and maintenance of your lighting scheme, via an integrated web interface or VMS. Raytec will provide live demonstrations on their stand showing how VARIO IP can be accessed and controlled at anytime from anywhere on the network. Visitors will be able to see VARIO IP as a dynamic group of lights and as part of an integrated system with a variety of other security technologies. Hall 4 Stand H15

Network Video Technologies (NVT) has released the TBus UTP/Ethernet-over-Coax Transmission product series (TBus is short for “Transmission Bus”). It is the backbone communications architecture for NVT’s range of IP transmission devices. TBus supports all forms of UTP and coax cable, as well as 18/2, 2-wire (un-twisted wire), and STP (shielded twisted-pair), and in any combination of star, peerto-peer, or daisy-chain cabling topology. In addition, TBus delivers 56VDC power for remote transceivers as well as their remote PoE devices (IP cameras, etc.). Loads of up to 1 amp are possible, supporting high power PoE+ devices up to 50 watts. TBus supports advanced 128-bit AES encrypted network speeds of up to 200Mbps. Data distances of 8,000ft are possible on RG59/U. Hall 5 Stand B55

Redvision

Tavcom

Redvision is using IFSEC 2013 to showcase its XSERIES Dual Light rugged dome/ball PTZ camera. LEDs with an illumination range of 100m are used in the Dual Light’s IR and white light modules and the Dual Light toggles automatically, or manually, between IR and white light modes to suit ambient lighting conditions. Pre-defined lighting profiles can be assigned to each of the Dual Light’s 100 preset positions, adjusting lighting strength and type to produce optimal images in each of its night-time, day-time or weekend modes. The LED lighting modules draw 48W altogether, similar to a small light bulb and around 5% of the energy consumption of a flood light or a white light PTZ solution. Hall 5 Stand D115

Tavcom will be officially launching its web based Academy, and a new Technical Services division at IFSEC this year. Visitors to the show will be among the first to see what the Tavcom Academy has to offer sales and technical professionals who are looking progress their career within the electronic security industry. Although known for its BTEC certificated training courses, Tavcom is now also able to offer tuition for anyone with a connection to the Internet following the recent development of a range of interactive ‘longdistance’ e-learning courses. IFSEC 2013

Optex

Samsung

Optex will be previewing a number of new products for launch in Europe on its stand at IFSEC 2013, including the Fiber SenSys FD508 alarm processing unit (APU), a new firmware version of its Redscan laser detector. The APU is an 8-zone unit with a rack-mounted design for fibre-optic fence detection systems that are aimed at highsecurity and commercial premises. Features include a single-strand sensing design (that does not require a loop back) and up to 800 metres of sensing cable per zone. The cable is insulated and resistant to EMI, RFI, lightning and corrosion. Optex will also be previewing the new firmware version of the Redscan SH. Hall 5 Stand B20

Samsung has redesigned the stand it had at last year at IFSEC with the objective of making it easier for visitors to learn which of the company’s range of IP network access control and video surveillance products are the ideal match for specific applications and environments. Samsung has also announced that it will be launching a range of Full HD (1080P) network cameras and domes which incorporate the WiseNetIII DSP chipset. The new models have been developed as a result of a market research programme which identified what users and installers felt were the key ‘must haves’ in order for high definition IP network cameras to automatically become the preferred choice when a new video surveillance system was being specified, or an existing system was being upgraded. IDIS IDIS has revealed that its stand at this year’s IFSEC will be dedicated to demonstrating its plug-and-play, HD DirectIP video solutions for small to large businesses. Comprising a range of cameras and network video recorders (NVR), DirectIP delivers plugand-play simplicity, combined with performance and compatibility. Presented across three, dynamic “experience zones,” IDIS will demonstrate exactly how DirectIP will improve security operations for enterprises of all sizes. Brian Song, Managing Director, IDIS said: “Video systems should be easy to install, configure and operate. We looked at how the industry installs and operates analogue systems and realised that networked HD video surveillance had become far too complicated and expensive.” Hall 5 Stand D30

We’re Open to Unlimited Possibilities Expanding integration possibilities with new camera solutions Honeywell’s IP camera range is already one of the broadest and most complete in the industry, and now with even more integration possibilities, it just got better.

Seamless Integration Our newly expanded line of ONVIF-compliant IP cameras gives you increased flexibility and the freedom to choose what’s right for your installation. Designed with open IP standards, including ONVIF Profile S, the new additions to our equIP® and performance camera ranges offer exceptional image quality and seamless integration to our portfolio of MAXPRO® NVRs. Most importantly, these new introductions allow expanded possibilities with full integration to third party manufacturer devices—ensuring full interoperability and flexibility.

Increased Flexibility The true day/night cameras are available in both 1080p and 720p wide dynamic – offering an indoor only minidome, a vandal resistant minidome and a box camera in each range. The cameras use progressive scan video to improve detail on moving objects, and Digital Noise Reduction provides significant storage savings without sacrificing image quality in variable and low light conditions. Setup is quick and easy and can be customized through a web client or from an NVR, providing optimum performance for indoor, as well as outdoor applications when using an environmental housing. In addition, our HDZ PTZ dome camera range, also fully ONVIF compliant, is equipped with a 360 degree rotation function and a zoom lens and is capable of delivering exceptional image quality. It is ideally suited to environments that require detailed surveillance, including cities, roads, airports, government facilities, schools, campuses and industrial sites.

Plustek

RIVA will be presenting its Full HD IP camera and encoder series at the event. All RIVA cameras are delivered with onboard video analytics (powered by VCA Technology) as a standard, at no extra cost. Thereby, video images are already analysed and evaluated before either being saved in the camera or transmitted for storage. Thus, the transmission of large data volume is avoided. Additionally, false alarms are reduced. The standard version of this VCA technology is upgradable with additional filters for individual requirements and all kinds of applications. RIVA will also introduce its latest Full HD IP cameras: the new Full HD 1080p ultra compact dome RC302HD for indoor applications, the indoor mini dome RC3202HD with WDR and the new mini bullet camera RC6802HD including built-in IR illuminator with Smart IR for outdoor applications. Hall 4 Stand F65

The Plustek NVR SlimD880 is a compact all-IP surveillance recorder that can support multiple megapixel video streaming, equipped with dual Gigabit Ethernet ports that enable greater channel surveillance and higher recording and remote live view access capabilities. Its fanless design and small footprint makes it fit in the tightest corners, running silently and using less energy than DVRs and traditional PC-based NVRs. Plustek will also be demonstrating the nDVR 580, an 8-channel networkable digital video recorder surveillance system designed for use with existing CCTV cameras, including PTZ cameras with intuitive browser based operation and configuration. Hall 4 Stand B105

Winsted Winsted Europe & Middle East will be back at IFSEC in May 2013 exhibiting its new EnVision and E-SOC ranges. EnVision is built for today’s control room technology with a modular design blending form and function in an ergonomically optimised single, double or triple tier configuration. Whatever the format, operator sight lines and viewing angles are maximised, while staff remain comfortable and productive. Winsted will also be debuting its E-SOC control station which combines the operational features of a workstation and console to offer advantages including flexibility and ergonomic design, helping to improve the performance of control room operators monitoring complex systems. UTC Climate, Controls & Security Product launches in intruder, CCTV, integration and fire will be unveiled by UTC Climate, Controls & Security at IFSEC this year. The new products will include a combined camera-PIR unit with features that will reportedly make visual verification intruder systems easier to design and install. For critical risk applications such as data-centres and storage facilities, a new line of aspirated air detection devices will provide the earliest possible warning of potential fires and a suite of perimeter detection products is also being showcased, ranging from acoustic cable technology to active IR beam devices. In the CCTV arena an upgraded video management system is being released, further enhancing the capability of the TruVision recorder range. Hall 4 Stand C90

Sony Sony is unveiling a series of developments at the show. The G6 range will figure strongly in Sony’s event announcements; cameras with the ability to work under difficult conditions with improved sensitivity and wide dynamic range. A new warranty represents an increase from one to three years, and will be supported with an advance replacement service. Where an issue cannot be resolved by the PrimeSupport Helpdesk, Sony will arrange for a replacement unit to be shipped to an agreed address. Sony is offering this replacement policy to all resellers as part of the Video Security Partner Programme. Hall 4 Stand J10

Connexion2 In addition to showcasing its range of lone worker products and solutions, Connexion2 will be exhibiting the functionality of both the Identicom 877c, the dedicated lone worker device that features a camera function, and an improved Identicom mobile smart-phone application. Both allow communities of lone workers to share information to assist ancillary activities when working remotely. Whether it is uploading a picture of a point of interest to the community’s platform, tagging a specific risk or location, or visually reporting on the progress of current operation, mobile users can now add supporting information to improve the flow of operations across any business. Excellent visibility in fast moving environments

Clear capture of fast moving objects is quickly becoming an essential requirement across many IP surveillance installations. With a frame rate of up to 60fps, Sony’s cameras capture images in exceptional detail, and deliver them in HD and Full HD resolution. Perfect for traffic surveillance, license plate and container recognition, as well as other high motion environments such as casinos.

The new-generation security cameras from Sony are powered by the revolutionary ‘IPELA Engine’. This means excellent low light sensitivity, XDNR noise reduction, a frame rate of up to 60fps, and enhanced visibility of high-contrast areas with View DR. Hello again, We all know that ACPO have an issue with non compliant ARC/RVRC's passing alarm activation's including CCTV images via the 999 service because the installation has not got a URN. But do the NSI & SSAIB compliant ARC/RVRC's help support compliance by also passing CCTV alarms via 999 from systems installed by non inspected installers who can’t get a URN? - I don’t think so! As a compliant ARC/RVRC abiding to the Standards and the spirit in which they are written we are being repeatedly challenged as to why certain NSI or SSAIB ARC/RVRC's will pass alarms to the police via 999 when we insist there must be a URN to get police response. Come on ACPO; jump on the NSI & SSAIB ARC/RVRC'S for non compliance to ACPO policy and get of the fence. Stop taking 999 calls from non certificated ARC/RVRC'S as we're getting a little fed up with the lack of consistency in our industry! It always seems law caters for those who comply and put themselves in a regulated environment, it’s much easier to deal with those who want to comply, than those who blatantly don't or won't. My point is that having done so and being subject to 3rd Party inspection for compliance to Standards (including the ACPO policy), why aren't certificated ARC/RVRC's being picked up for using the 999 service to pass alarm activation's without URN's to the Police service? The non accredited ARC/RVRC's is another issue altogether, one that needs addressing, otherwise why insist on Standards at all?

Video stills from Dual Light RVX18-IRWL X-Series camera. ‘White Light zoom’ provides facial recognition at 30 metres.

Facial recognition at zero Lux.

Connections

We can see that there is a huge growth in BS8243 visually confirmed alarms using the existing IP signalling for the intruder/fire system which use the installations' URN. However many visually confirmed systems such as RSI Videofied or Visonic Real panels are Grade 2 compliant but not necessarily installed by NSI or SSAIB installers, or monitored by a Certificated ARC/RVRC. In my view its these types of systems and the way the alarm signals are passed to the police via the 999 service that is causing the inconsistency for the regulated marketplace We have a problem Houston and it ain’t gonna get any better! Bye for now

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA A help yourself robbery Two thieves entered a KFC in The Bronx in April with armed robbery in mind, however if they were expecting any resistance, it only came from the till. On entering the takeaway outlet they patiently waited to be served to no avail so helped themselves to the cash register. Doesn’t look like it should be too tricky to find them, just follow the receipt.

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world…

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQEk0kUFfGg

Driver needs Autoglass and a doctor This amazing footage shows the moment when a collapsed lamppost smashes through a bus windscreen in China. Fortunately the driver manages to safely stop the vehicle carrying 26 passengers at the roadside despite suffering a ruptured spleen in the accident. Make sure your car insurance covers you for lamppost attacks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oItWScoSEFg

Find a better disguise… This month, Police in Northern California released a video of a botched burglary featuring a suspect who cased the joint with his black stocking disguise on his head. After eventually covering his face with tights too dark to see through he manages to aim something at the window, cracking it and setting off an alarm. The man then flees, but can’t see where he’s going tripping twice on the way. Not a criminal mastermind this one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bBLZy7sXFk

Escape with a clear exit This CCTV footage shows a thief in Australia running through a glass door as he attempts to escape a shopping centre after an attempted bag snatch. Not realising that the sliding door was actually on the right hand side, he ran head-first into the window. Good job it wasn’t in the UK, as he’d probably put in a health and safety claim. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zful2jqXv1M

Divine intervention? Does this CCTV footage show a superhuman person or even an alien saving a man on a motorbike from certain death by teleporting him a few meters away at a road junction? This clip from China has now gone viral and has sparked debate as to its authenticity as well as the existence of angels amongst us. Nice work, whichever version of events is true. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbphbNP25i8
