The US and us... This month PSI took a trip to Vegas to see what is happening in the US security market and find out how it differs from the UK market in terms of trends and technology. had not been to Las Vegas before and was not sure what to expect from the Strip or ISC West, the American security systems event, when we ventured over there in mid-April, however I did find some similarities between us and the US - although it was mainly small differences. For example, we all know America tends to do things on a grand scale while the English among us prefer to be a bit more reserved and stand in line; so while we have Blackpool they have Vegas. The tattoos, poverty-gap and seedy side of both are clear but the size of the US version is much more apparent and the locals more plush, as was the carpet in the Sands Expo- much softer than the rough stuff we get in UK exhibition halls. That aside there are some important differences worth noting between the security markets and the drivers behind them. It was quite clear that the buzz around the show was about business intelligence. Now that we have cameras that give us 7K video (as launched by Avigilon this month) and a host of manufacturers bringing out 4K units the quality of CCTV footage is starting to get to the stage that anything less than 720p is considered poor. With this raising of the resolution, the data being collected by cameras provides customers with far more information than the systems of previous times. And the use of this data leads to a difference in the markets. To clarify, video analytics is nothing new. We have had the software/algorithms for some time but it is only now that the raw data itself is so good that they are taking a bigger hold and the creative types are constantly coming up with clever things you can do with the information. In the UK we see analytics as having two purposes - security and business intelligence while in the US, chatting to various people at the show, the security side is by far the major thrust of analytics use, with tools such as PoS being the next main use. It appears that the US considers the technology having a much bigger role to play in homeland security than we do in the UK where we’re seeing the dual role of security and business/marketing for analytics these days. Perhaps it is because we have lived with home-grown attacks and unruly neighbours for much longer than the States and are possibly ahead of the surveillance game in that respect. Certainly many people felt that the UK market is far more mature and widely established and could be a template for US CCTV in the future. One thing that the US has that is more mature than in the UK is casinos and the number of cameras in those establishments paints a rosy picture for installers that get contracts in the new builds popping up all over the country. It was an interesting event to attend and showed that we may be far apart in miles, but we’re not miles apart in everything.

Security now included in new build regulations The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has welcomed the publication of the new Building Regulations which – for the first time in England – require new homes to incorporate provisions to resist unauthorised access. The new requirement, and the accompanying Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations covering door and window security, takes effect in October this year and will apply to all dwellings in England. The new requirement covers main entrance doors, windows and interlinked doors to integral garages in houses. The requirement also covers external entrance doors to apartment blocks and to individual apartment doors that open into common areas. The new Approved Document states that doors and windows will meet the new security requirements if they can resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar. To do this they must be both robust and be fitted with appropriate hardware. DHF general manager

Power shift at Dycon Following the recent acquisition of Dycon by CSL DualCom and the subsequent division of Dycon’s existing product lines into two separate businesses, secure communications and power supplies, CSL DualCom’s Board has agreed to divest the power supply business. A new business, known as Dycon Power Solutions has relocated the manufacturing, sales and support functions of the existing Dycon range of switched-mode power supplies to a new facility in South Wales. The company also has development plans for new power products to be launched during 2015. Dycon Power Solutions Managing Director Tony Allen (pictured), supported by Commercial Director, Tony Makosinski, brings a wealth of security industry knowledge to the new company with the aim of making Dycon Power Solutions the industry’s foremost supplier of advanced power products. and secretary Michael Skelding said: “We’ve campaigned alongside Secured by Design for a long time to have security incorporated into the Building Regulations. So we are particularly pleased that, at last, builders of new homes will have to ensure they provide enhanced levels of security for occupants. The Housing Standards Review is streamlining the regulatory process to increase the number of new homes being built. Achieving increased security of homes was a key aim within the review. Properties built after October this year will feature levels of security that will provide real defence against break-in attempts.”

Videcon has also announced the appointment of Mike Reddington, former European General Manager of ADI, as the new Managing Director for the company. About the new appointment, Andy Croston, Owner/Director of Videcon, said: “Mike has over 25 years’ experience in the security industry and held a number of senior positions throughout his career. He is a key player in the security industry and a staunch professional with an outstanding reputation. “Mike is a key appointment for the business that strengthens the existing senior management team and will be instrumental in taking the business through its next growth cycle.” Mike Reddington commented: “I am delighted to be joining Videcon, who are committed to the continued investment in its product ranges, employees and resources so it can deliver exceptional portfolio of CCTV products and services. This is an exciting time for Videcon and its customers and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

The risks of not fit-for-purpose CCTV According to a new report, companies and consumers are putting assets at risk by choosing video surveillance solutions that are not fit for purpose. Aiming to simplify the options available and help companies make better decisions, the report highlights video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) which combines CCTV and cloud computing into one offering. The report, commissioned by Cloudview, Comparative Review of VSaaS and Local CCTV Recording and Management, details the history of video surveillance, outlines its many uses and explains how the technologies have evolved and differentiated. The purpose of the report is to demystify buying decisions for all security managers, from consumers to corporate compliance officers. Highlighting how indecision over security upgrades exposes organisations and individuals to an increased likelihood of crime, the report also indicates that hasty decisions can result in wasting fortunes on pointless and expensive rip and replace upgrades. The strengths and weaknesses of CCTV and IP cameras, and their compatibility, are not generally well understood, according to OpenSky, who conducted the study. “Closed circuit and video surveillance as a service don’t need to be mutually exclusive,” says report author Nigel Stanley, Practice Director for cyber security at OpenSky UK. “Few people understand that they could complement each other and create an omnipotent management system. Another common misconception is that closed circuit analogue and open digital IP systems are completely incompatible, when in reality, the cloud is a simple and inexpensive way to bring the two together and get the best of both worlds.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Dave Sanders, Managing Director of Justice Fire & Security, one of the UK’s leading NSI Gold Fire and Electronic Security System Installers. Justice offer customers over three decades of experience. How does this give you the edge over your competition? 30 years of experience has given Justice the opportunity to engage with new technology and build up a loyal workforce. Our large customer base includes large corporate organisations, SMEs and residential customers who all benefit from the same point of contact year on year. Staff retention and stability is the key to providing an excellent customer relationship and service. Your established customer base is accustomed to particular products, what prompted your decision to start using DualCom? We started using DualCom in the nineties when the only other signalling product of its type at the time would not work with what was then the new ISDN line technology. Over the years DualCom have continued to innovate and provide a technical and field support service that is second to none. We prefer to use well-established suppliers that have weathered tough economic times and still come out on top. What’s the strategy behind keeping the business regional despite your significant organic growth? Clients prefer to use a local company with local knowledge and of course a quick response. We have stayed away from acquisitions as our organic growth has been fuelled by the provision of an excellent installation and service facility of our own systems. Our local offices have built up a personal customer relationship from initial survey through to installation and ongoing service. You are one of only 8 companies to hold a BS8418 accreditation for CCTV installation. What are the main benefits of this? Surprisingly 90% of monitored CCTV systems do not meet BS8418 standards. At the outset these systems appear suitable for the end user but are often installed to a poor standard without any back-up facilities for the monitoring. The Insurance Industry quickly recognised the problem of non-BS8418 systems and the National Security Inspectorate launched a separate scope for BS8418 accreditation at the Insurers’ request. A BS8418 system provides assurances for fail-safe duplicate signalling systems, quality and backup. It would be monitored by a suitably accredited remote video response centre with trained operators and can obtain a Police URN enabling a quick police response. What do you predict will be the next ‘big thing’ in the industry? The continued roll out of reliable “always on” high speed fibre broadband will enable IP alarm signalling, off-site CCTV recording and other cloudbased security systems to be established. Analytical CCTV software will also progress further with software that can recognise a fire, a number plate and a face. Over time I think we will see the use of networks of IP cameras, controlled and recorded via the cloud, doing the job of a fire and/or an intruder alarm, as well as an access control system.

NEWS EXTRA

Installers got talent? he annual competition held during the IFSEC event (16th-18th June at Excel, London) will provide participants with a global stage to compete against their peers and represent their company in a series of tests. Competitors including installation apprentices and young engineers will undertake a 90-minute assessment, reviewing a previously installed intruder alarm system, identifying the faults, re-commissioning the system and finishing with any additional security and safety measures. Each entrant is marked by a panel of judges from the security inspectorates, training and commercial organisations, and points are allocated based on performance in the various disciplines. Engineers of Tomorrow (formerly called the IFSEC Apprentice Challenge) was created by Skills for Security under its previous name of SITO 17 years ago. The competition is promoted by UBM and is supported by CSL Dualcom, Skills for Security, NSI and SSAIB and the results will be featured in a future edition of PSI magazine. We spoke with competition organiser Mark Cunningham of Skills for Security about the tests and the changes he has seen over the years since the event began.

T

As we reported in last month’s edition, the Engineers of Tomorrow, the UK Apprentice and Young Engineers Competition 2015 will celebrate its 17th year at IFSEC International in June. Here we take a closer look at the contest

Who can enter the competition? Applications are invited from apprentices both on formal industry approved training schemes and equally to “in house apprentices” and young engineers. Applicants must be in full time employment in the security systems industry and have the written consent of their employer to participate Age Limit - The competition is open to any security systems Employer benefits apprentices or young engineers There are many benefits for employers in who will be 24 years of age or under putting forward their apprentices to take on the day they compete part in the competition including: To give everyone a fair chance, • Gaining free promotional exposure to competitors will be allocated to the the global security industry at the appropriate category and the event and also in show PR and marking for the different categories marketing will be handicapped/weighted • The competition helps with the accordingly. development of engineers offering them an opportunity to work in a competitive environment • Encouragement for young talent, with the opportunity for them to win up to £1000 in cash Not only will participation highlight the company's skilled workforce, but it will also give great exposure to the IFSEC International audience.

12

What specific tasks will entrants be asked to complete?

Competitors will work in pairs and have 90-minutes to review a previously installed intruder alarm system, identifying the faults, recommissioning the system and finishing with any additional security and safety measures.

Competitors will also complete a short ten question multiple choice test on current standards for intruder alarms.

Why do you think that people should enter? It gives our young engineers and apprentices the chance to meet and compete against their peers from different parts of the country with the chance to win prizes and recognition in the industry for themselves and their companies. There are prizes each day for each heat and if at the end of the week they are in the top three pairs of the competition overall, then they get to attend a prestigious black-tie dinner in London at the Security Excellence Awards to receive their prizes. Again that gives great publicity opportunities for their companies, so there’s something in it for the apprentices and the employers.

Have you seen the standard of entrant improve over the years? The standard has improved over the years. To some degree this is a natural progression as there is a much higher degree of IT literacy amongst the young people entering our industry today. The increase in university fees has also led to applications from youngsters who previously would maybe not have considered an apprenticeship but are now attracted by the opportunity to “earn while they learn”. This has led to a growing number of young people with higher grade GCSE’s entering the security industry straight from school and this could be a big attraction to employers.

How difficult is the judging for you? It’s easy for me; I have a team of inspectors from the NSI and SSAIB so I leave it to them! Joking aside the standards of entrant are continually improving and it can be quite a close run thing so the expertise and experience of the inspectors is paramount, the inspectors mark the contestants using a pre agreed score sheet and marking guide to ensure a level playing field. In my role as stand manager I do have the final adjudication in the event of any difference of opinion between inspectors but this doesn’t happen often as these guys know the job inside out and I have worked with them and known them all for many years and we all share the same goal of developing the next generation of engineers for our industry. PSI ON TOUR

Notes from Sin City In mid-April PSI journeyed to Las Vegas for the ISC West 15 event. Here is a collection of the sights and sounds we experienced….

he International Security Conference & Exposition – also known as ISC West – is the largest event in the USA for the physical security industry, covering access control, alarms and monitoring, biometrics, IP security, video surveillance, networked security products and more. Held at the Sands Expo in the Venetian Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip the event is one massive hall full of technology that, over three days, is the focal point of the US security sector. PSI took a trip to the show and met up with a number of experts to talk about the differences between the US and the UK markets and what trends could be coming our way via the States over the next few years. As expected there was a huge number of new systems being launched and plenty of opinions to hear over the course of three days. Here is a collection of some of the new systems and opinions of people we met on our travels:

T

NEWS IDIS launches in the US With headquarters in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, IDIS launched its DirectIP video surveillance solution to the US market at ISC West 2015. Already known and doing rather well in the UK, the plug-and-play, high-definition solution was launched to the USA at the show by regional President Andrew Myung and Sales Director Keith Drummond. “DirectIP is designed to provide a simple yet high-performance solution,” said Keith. “The framework builds an entire network system from a single source supplier, comprising a range of IP cameras, NVRs, monitors, video management software, as well as switching hubs and accessories.”

14

Moonlight steals the limelight Mobotix revealed that its 6MP cameras have an increase of light sensitivity of more than 100times than the company’s previous 3MP cameras. The monochrome version reaches a 300-times higher sensitivity than the previous series. Instead of one full second of exposure time the new 6MP systems can select only 1/100 s which results in capturing even fast moving objects in low light conditions. This increase in light sensitivity was achieved by several means: wider sensor with bigger pixels to catch more light, a hardware noise reduction filter directly at the sensor, a new lens with a better light transmission, and an improved image processing software reducing the noise of low light images. This system, called Mobotix Moonlight Technology was impressively demonstrated at the event.

Coffee from the mountains Fibaro, the manufacturer of wireless home automation systems, and the Z-Wave Alliance took part in the Mount Everest Challenge at the show when mountain climber Mariusz Malkowski proved that "Home is Wherever You Are." During the show Mariusz is confronting extreme conditions as he ascended to the top of Mount Everest from where, in a live demonstration, he controlled Fibaro sensors and other Z-Wave powered devices located half a world away. Using the wireless technology, Mariusz turned on lights, operated locks, opened garage doors and brewed a coffee to prove the reliability of ZWave devices. The new guard Probably the most photographed system on show over the three days was Knightscope’s K5 Autonomous Data Machine, a fully autonomous robot with an array of on-board sensors used to monitor geo-fenced areas and provide a physical and commanding presence in public places where security is needed. The machines communicate via a wireless network directly with the Knightscope Security Operations Center (KSOC), a browser-based user interface, to provide real-time alerts of unusual or suspicious activity. Featuring a surveillance camera, ANPR, GPS and sensors for the measurement of temperature, humidity, barometrics, CO2 and sound levels the robot caused quite a stir in the New Product Showcase area.

OPINIONS On our rounds we met a lot of people and spoke with many about the trends they are seeing in the market and the growth areas for business. Many felt that business intelligence and surveillance camera analytics would begin to rise to importance especially as camera resolutions got higher so more data can be captured. Here is a small selection of some of the opinions we came across.

Aubrey Muhlach – Seagate What trends are you seeing in the US at the moment? Firstly we are seeing a move forwards from simply having surveillance as a security solution to using it for analytics. We did a survey with some of our partners recently to ask what it was they were using cameras for and there are about 12% of them starting to use video analytics. I think this is an upgrade that is starting to happen in the US and I believe it is a similar case in the UK as you have a good foundation of surveillance systems and people are asking what they can now do with all of the data they are gathering. One thing I am thrilled to see is that people are valuing the data and are investing in systems to make sure their information is safe and available when required. Is the UK seeing the same trend in your opinion? It seems to me that the UK is leading the way in this and along with the US investing heavily in analytics and both markets understanding that storage of information is valuable. Both are aware that leveraging data makes for better customer experiences such as traffic patterns are in the right flow, hospitals are faster to admit patients and you have better experiences checking into a hotel as they know who you are – these are areas that I think are very similar between the US and the UK. What will be the trend next year? It’s always higher rates of video resolution! I’m hoping that it will be analytics and that people are thinking about the benefits, particularly as some can be cautious about investing in surveillance. The rise in the use of wearables and pushing alarm/video notifications to smart devices will continue.

Wendi Burke

(Below) Keith Drummond of IDIS launches DirectIP video surveillance solution to the US market

16

Wendi Burke – 3xLogic What trends are you seeing in the US at the moment? The two largest trends I have seen over the last year that will continue on into 2016 would be mergers and acquisitions between access control and video surveillance companies. Another trend that is high at the moment involves cloud services and moving towards ‘real’ cloud, not just a server you can access through a browser, but hosted services outside of a company where they are saving money because they do not have servers on site. This also saves on electricity and the cost of the servers; you pay for only what you use which is more convenient because you can add and remove cameras, servers etc without having any high cost – plus these are managed and maintained for you as well. The UK is still quite analogue. What would you say the US is? I think the US is about 50:50 with IP now as we have a lot of new infrastructure and buildings going up as the economy has improved. All of the new projects are bringing IP on board. There are a lot of companies offering hybrid solutions so you can take in analogue and IP to allow you to utilise any existing cabling infrastructure. How long has analogue got in America? I think it will be around for a long time in pockets here and there. I don’t think anyone who has buildings currently wired for analogue is ready

to switch. We are moving towards IP and fibre and there are lots of new technologies coming on that improve bandwidth and resolution, but I do think that analogue will stick around for quite a bit longer. Brian Matthews - Verint Systems What are the main differences you see between the UK and the US security markets? Since the 1970s and 80s, the UK market has had a tremendous amount of CCTV cameras installed per capita—much more so than in the U.S. The UK market is very mature and involves leading video security manufacturers. Today, the big potential in the UK is customers who are ready to replace their analogue cameras with IP devices. Meanwhile, in the US, it’s mainly analogue cameras connected to DVRs and to encoders and a hardware matrix. US customers are also gradually upgrading to IP megapixel cameras to gain better image quality and more capabilities. In the UK market, there is also more government involvement in standards and regulation around video surveillance than there is in the US. For example, as demand grows for video analytics in security applications, especially retail operations, new regulations have been introduced. One example is the i-LIDS program, a government initiative that provides a benchmark to facilitate the development and selection of video analytics. When any video security solution that includes video analytics is sold in the UK, iLids certification is now mandatory in many cases. What will be the next security technology trend? We see several significant trends on the horizon. For example, we’re seeing an accelerating migration to the Cloud and a growing expansion beyond the traditional definition of “physical security” as protecting a given facility. Today, it’s evolving to be more focused on risk intelligence and management.

“The essential differences between the two markets are the costs involved of being in them. In Europe it is quite expensive but it is rewarded when people see that you do comply with approvals, make quality products and provide technical support”

As a result, the traditional security operations/command centre (SOC) of global enterprises, law enforcement agencies, governments and cities has evolved to be more proactive. Today, there is more of a focus on risk intelligence, business continuity, and mitigating and preventing incidents before they occur, rather than just responding to incidents and managing the situation after the fact. This shifting focus enables more seamless integration and collaboration, and improved data-sharing and visualization between the SOC and employees, first responders and other entities, including mobile resources, mobile command centres, and etc. In the end, the regional and global SOCs can work together more seamlessly than has ever been possible in the past. Mitchell Kane & Andrew Morgan – Vanderbilt Industries What are the main differences you see between the US and EU markets? The contrasts between the two markets are in a couple of areas. Firstly look at the number of languages we need to deal with in Europe and the various approvals we have to have - the barriers to entry in the markets across Europe are much greater. In some ways it is easier to be cynical about having one European market as every country in the EU has a different opinion on approvals. In some countries some of those approvals are used to prevent competition while in the US there is a very open market and the barriers are limited. The only difference when you cross the state line is the accent! When you attend a show like ISC West, just look at all the exhibitors from the Far East – they must see this as a huge market for them. The drivers are different too, so in the UK if you look at the three main areas of CCTV, intruder and access control, intrusion has become a saturated market. Every

report you look at shows a slow decline driven mainly by the consumer world and to survive you need to offer the complete package of monitoring and technology and while you can go to B&Q and get this for under £150, but getting quality is difficult. The essential differences between the two markets are the costs involved of being in them. In Europe it is quite expensive but it is rewarded when people see that you do comply with approvals, make quality products and provide technical support. Andrew Elvish – Genetec What are the main differences between the US and UK markets? I think there are some notable differences in the two in terms of where each is with the change from analogue to IP. The UK went all-in on analogue in the mid-90s and are now at a point where they need to make decisions about how they migrate. I think there is a lot of thinking going on about how this can be achieved and the fact that this is happening brings to mind another difference between the two markets which is that the UK is thinking about how to bring together the security side of the business with the operational side of the business. We are seeing that in some end-user verticals in the US but in the UK there is much discussion around how to leverage video surveillance and access control to gain deeper insights in stores and cities. At the same time in the UK we are seeing some very clever approaches to leveraging video applications because of the history of CCTV in the UK there is a lot of thinking around making it safer for communities. The level of dialogue that is going on the UK is very inventive and we are now at the point where companies are switching over to IP networks with robust profiles. Not to say this isn’t happening in the US, it’s just that there is a different focus looking more at crime prevention.

UPGRADING CCTV

Raising the resolution CCTV seems to be all about the resolution these days so here are some tips on upgrading to highresolution surveillance and fitting the right technology for your customers ith the ability to monitor larger areas and view greater detail using higher resolution cameras, many organisations are turning their attention to newly available multi-megapixel cameras to secure open spaces. 4k cameras provide up to four times the resolution of 1080p high definition security cameras, however organisations must first ensure they have the appropriate infrastructure resources to support these new cameras. While companies desire the increased coverage available with these new devices, they may require additional bandwidth, processing power and storage to support the adoption of the technology. This has more organisations asking their installers: How can we incorporate higher resolution surveillance cameras, while keeping costs to a minimum? According to Erick Ceresato of Genetec there are a few ways in which installers can help their clients deploy high resolution cameras more efficiently. Here are Eric’s suggestions: Minimise network impact - Although security departments will maximise the benefit of ultra-high resolution cameras by displaying a single camera within a monitor, operators often need to view multiple cameras on a display, dedicating only a small area for each stream. By taking advantage of multi-streaming capabilities, a video management software (VMS) can automatically switch between high and low resolution streams based on the size of the video tiles being viewed by an operator. This can greatly reduce bandwidth and workstation requirements in instances where there is no need to display a full megapixel stream, such as when an operator is monitoring multiple cameras on a monitor or when certain cameras are displayed in small tiles. GPU-accelerated video decoding - With the increasing availability and use of new ultra-HD and multi-megapixel cameras, it may also be necessary to upgrade existing workstations to cope with the demands of decoding higher resolution video. A VMS that relies solely on central processing units (CPU) will use a significant amount of processing power to decode only a few cameras, thereby inhibiting the ability of the operator to view additional cameras or run concurrent operations. GPU-accelerated video decoding makes

deploying next-generation cameras in a system far more practical and affordable. By leveraging a workstation’s graphics cards and embedded graphical processing units (GPU) to decode video, operators can display more cameras, at higher resolutions and frame rates, while also providing them with greater speed and fluidity when playingback and reviewing video. With affordable, off-theshelf video cards, organisations can minimise their need to purchase new workstations, as they deploy higher resolution cameras within their system, and keep CPU available for other operations. Optimising server utilisation - By implementing a high-performance computing (HPC) environment, customers can optimise the use of their existing infrastructure resources, helping them reduce the expense of purchasing new equipment. The selection of a VMS that can provide a scalable architecture can allow organisations to reduce the number of recording servers that are needed within their system, as well as help minimise the costs of operating and maintaining their surveillance infrastructure. Staying on top of surveillance - With the growing adoption of higher resolution cameras, organisations must take into account how implementing these devices will impact the resources of their surveillance system. Selecting a VMS with capabilities that help optimise the use of bandwidth and hardware can significantly minimise costs. It also ensures that an organisation’s network maintains reliability in order to support other applications that are critical to their business operations.

Moving on up Of course there are a number of ways to upgrade the resolution of a CCTV system depending on the starting point. There is no need for example to

UPGRADING CCTV

(from previous page)

The path to higher resolutions does not have to go through IP territory or involve ripping out cabling 24

think that the only road to HD from analogue is IP. Whilst it is fair to say that most of the manufacturers’ R&D is in the networked surveillance side of things these days there are various ways to use parts of your analogue infrastructure to gain higher resolutions. The most obvious method is to upgrade the camera as this is where the initial image is captured and if you do not have a camera capable of giving you a good resolution image then no matter what technology your customer has in the background they will not be able to look at data that is not there– real life is not like CSI! This year we have seen a rapid rise in the number of manufacturers launching 4K cameras, which only last year seemed a little excessive in a market that largely still operates at 720p or 1080p. And, as is the way of technology, the 4K cameras have already been left behind by the launch of 5K, 6K and now from Avigilon a 7K camera. The launch of this unit is covered elsewhere in this edition (on page 26), but it is fair to say that even Avigilon would not expect anyone to buy their 7K cameras and try to fit them straight into to a system running a much lower res analogue unit. As we’ve pointed out already the infrastructure must be in place to be able to support the demands of these super high resolution cameras. In the interest of fairness it should be pointed out that not all of your clients are going to need to upgrade to 4K or 7K, it all depends on the application and what information they want to take from the scene. A higher resolution camera will gather more data so if business intelligence or analytics is of importance to them then the higher resolutions offered by 4K will be desirable but not always vital. And just to be sure the images are useful, re-check that the lighting and positioning will suit what may be a wider view from the higher res camera. It is also worth noting that despite the claims of some manufactures as to the bandwidth requirements of their units there are usually sacrifices to be made in order to lower the strain on the network from a high resolution camera. In some cases, while the way in which the image is broken down into tiles to allow lower res images to be saved for saving on the bandwidth certainly does help, the framerate of the cameras is reduced, in some cases to 4fps. If that suits the application then that is fine, but for ANPR analytics for example, this may not always be practicable.

Improving options As already mentioned, the path to higher resolutions does not have to go through IP territory or involve ripping out cabling. IP is likely the best choice in a new build, but if you have a customer that is currently running low res analogue technology there is no barrier to them increasing their resolutions and a number of ways to do this without breaking the bank. Technologies such HDSDI have shown that camera upgrades can be made while keeping the Coax cabling in place and not getting IT managers involved in the installation. Some changes will need to be made such as upgrading the monitors (your customers will need to have monitors of at least 720p) and possibly the recording device (HD-SDI does not work with analogue DVRs) in order for the full benefits of the upgrade to be experienced. Based around broadcast systems, HD-SDI can be achieved in full or using hybrid installations and signal repeaters may be required depending on the cable runs. Fans of HD-SDI point to additional benefits such as near zero latency and uncompressed images as reasons to remain on Coax cabling. There is also the option of using switches/adaptors to run IP cameras over Coax cabling and these can add PoE to the system. Many network camera manufacturers have a range of switches to allow their cameras to be used on existing cabling as (cynics would say) they recognise that by only selling units that required Cat5 to be installed could limit camera sales as the installation costs would spiral. Clearly the best route to higher resolutions is not as straightforward as just buying the highest resolution cameras. There are a number of questions that you need to ask your customers before suggesting the system for the job. You need to consider: • Why do they want to upgrade? • What do they want to do with the data? • What is currently installed? • What is the budget? Choosing the most suitable system will depend on combining the answers to those four questions to meet their requirements. Camera resolutions will only improve in the future. Consider, now that we have seen the launch of a 7K camera how many R&D departments must right now be working on 8K, 9K and beyond? Whether we actually need such high resolutions for most applications is up for debate, but what is sure is that anyone who has tried to identify anyone or anything from a grainy image will have wished they had a better system installed. The image limitations of a 4K camera are much less than those of a 1080p unit, but upgrades always cost more money so getting it right is essential.

INSIDE STORY

7K CCTV in focus

The announcement of Avigilon’s new 7K camera has raised the barrier for much higher resolutions in the security market. We take a closer look

26

When Avigilon announced that it would showcase the security industry’s first single-sensor 7K (30 megapixel) security camera at the ISC West 2015 tradeshow in Las Vegas a few days before the show it unsurprisingly caught the attention of the market. Promising ‘stunning’ image detail, the 7K HD Pro camera was described as simultaneously providing maximum scene coverage while minimising bandwidth and storage consumption, redefining the industry standard for high-resolution imaging. Avigilon also announced the release of the 6K (24 MP) HD Pro camera at the same time. When coupled with the Avigilon Control Center (ACC) software featuring Avigilon’s High Definition Stream Management (HDSM) technology, the 7K camera is listed as providing a resolution exceeding 7,000 pixels and more than 30 million total pixels and, says the company, brings effective processing power and efficient bandwidth and storage management – one of the key concerns regarding the use of 4K cameras over IP. The frame rate does drop with the higher definition units as you would expect; the rate for the 7K camera is around 4fps. Built with large areas in mind, the HD Pro camera series are designed for providing full situational awareness combined with clear detail when zoomed in, such as with the monitoring of a full stadium and capturing fan disruptions to comply with mandatory government regulations. Other applications could be covering a full parking lot and identifying number plates or covering the entire tarmac of an airport while still being able to distinguish plane numbers. It is stated that as the cameras can cover a larger area, fewer cameras are needed in the installation. The 7K (30 MP) and 6K (24 MP) devices join Avigilon’s family of 4K (8 MP) and 5K (16 MP) HD Pro cameras. The image quality of the cameras is made possible by the H4 platform and H.264 compression with the latest edition

of HDSM 2.0 technology. The cameras are also supported by Avigilon’s LightCatcher technology, for low-light performance. PSI caught up with Willem Ryan, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Avigilon, to find out more about the new cameras and discuss the development of much higher resolution cameras than the market is familiar with.

We are only beginning to see 4K cameras hit the market in the UK, so why launch 7K so soon? We have been innovating beyond 4K since 2007 when we introduced our 16 megapixel camera. High resolution imaging is important because surveillance cameras are most effective when they are able to cover wide areas with the simultaneous ability to zoom in and provide clear image detail. With this objective in mind, innovations that increase the resolution, coverage (field-of-view), quality and performance of camera technologies are positive developments for the security industry.

Is the infrastructure commonly in place for people to use a 7K camera? Yes, the Avigilon Control Center software with our High Definition Stream Management (HDSM) technology is a critical component for getting the maximum benefit from the 7K HD Pro cameras. This software allows organisations to leverage their existing infrastructure within an Avigilon ecosystem and take advantage of resolutions as high as 7K without requiring any significant increase in network capacity. We provide an end-to-end solution, which consists of purpose-built products that provide clear image detail with minimal impact to network storage and bandwidth.

Are there any installation differences from HD cameras? The 7K HD Pro camera is easy to install and set up, with remote zoom and focus capabilities. Installation would be comparable to a box-style HD camera.

How long before we see 8K and 9K – will higher definitions ever stop? High resolution imaging technology is constantly evolving, both outside and within the security industry. We will continue to create ‘game-changing’ products and set new standards. avigilon.com

FIRE SAFETY PRODUCT 2015 Xtralis – Vesda-E VEA VOTE NOW AT: WWW.PSIMAGAZINE.CO.UK

The Vesda-E VEA series of detectors combine early warning smoke detection with pinpoint addressability and a variety of annunciation options. They use patented air sampling points and multi-channel micro-bore airsampling with enhanced or standard alarm sensitivity setting for the sampling points. As a multi-channel addressable system, the VEA detector is able to divide a protected space into sampling locations, enabling the localisation of a fire for faster incident response.

Eldes – Fumerex

Fumerex is a fully autonomous Smoke and CO alarm system, operating on GSM networks. It works with a simple to replace standard battery. In case of smoke detection or CO level increase, the system will call and send text SMS to all authorised users (up to five users in the system). Fumerex uses standard 2G SIM card and is designed for small properties without fire and/or security systems and does not require mains power. System fully complies with EU regulations, is CE (1383) certified, EN14604 and EN50291 certificates pending.

Detectortesters – Scorpion

Scorpion addresses the long-standing problem of testing hard-to-access smoke detectors in areas like lift shafts, ceiling voids, secure areas and hazardous environments. The system comprises a smoke generator that is fixed next to the point smoke detector or at the end of an aspirating pipe in the restricted area, and is controlled from outside the area whenever a test is required. As access equipment and specialist staff costs are eliminated after install, Scorpion makes functional testing of hard-to-access detectors as easy and safe.

36

Aico - Ei414 Fire/CO Interface

Telecare/warden call systems are commonplace but are rarely connected with smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in the property. The Ei414 fire/CO alarm interface provides a wireless interface between Aico RadioLINK smoke, heat and CO alarms with most new and existing warden call systems, enabling an emergency signal to be transmitted directly to that system if fire or CO is detected.

Apollo – EN54-20 ASD

EN54-20 approved Point Based ASD has an IP65 enclosure, which provides protection against ingress from the environment. The code protection controls and bespoke removal key provide protection against vandalism and tampering. Available in two variations, both use Discovery optical detectors and are fitted with a mini-switch monitor which allows for the monitoring of fail-safe fault relays.

Fike – Multipoint ASD

Last year, Fike Safety Technology introduced a new detector for its TWINFLEXpro two-wire fire alarm system. The Multipoint ASD detector includes an optional integral strobe, allowing the two-wire installation of an advanced smoke/heat detector, sounder and strobe, in a single device. It also incorporates an optical chamber for enhancing smoke detection and a simple LED in the base, which flashes when the detector head is removed. This enables users to easily identify which detector is missing even from considerable distance.

Klaxon - Sonos Pulse Sonos Pulse fire beacons ensure that all personnel are notified of a fire emergency. With Pulse Alert Technology, buildings are evacuated quicker, evacuation requirements are unambiguous and everyone is made to feel safe and secure. Relying on audible fire alarm notifications alone disadvantages people with hearing impairments or those working, or living, in sound reducing conditions. Sonos Pulse beacons produce a light output that can protect most rooms with a single device. Sonos Pulse beacons are unmissable and unmistakable, attracting attention from those not looking at the device and otherwise preoccupied with other tasks.

unning alongside the PSI Premier Awards, the PSI Golf Day is always a bit more than your average golf event and this year we have a new venue. Stapleford Park Country House Hotel is surrounded by a magnificent 500 acres of Capability Brown landscaped grounds – the perfect luxury hotel and English sporting country estate. The estate sits in the heart of England near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire within the East Midlands. The state features an historic country house, as well as the exceptional golf course, luxury spa and 2 AA Rosette Restaurant. The 18-hole championship golf course is the home of the PGA’s newest tournament, The Handa Senior Masters, and is a constant challenge to golfers.

The course Of all the golf courses in the world, very few are free from intrusion. Designed by Donald Steel, the Championship Golf Course at Stapleford Park is a rare exception. Located in the heart of England, surrounded by stunning Leicestershire countryside, the golf course is set within the delightfully pure Capability Brown landscape of the estate. With ever-changing views of the House, its lakes and five hundred acre park, this is classic English countryside at its very best. The course wraps around the heart of the estate in two extended loops, never being more than two holes wide, making golf here reminiscent of the great links courses. The Championship golf course is not only challenging but it is also amongst the finest

luxury golf courses in the Midlands. It was selected by the PGA European Seniors Tour to host their newest golf tournament in May 2010. The greens and tees are immaculately maintained to the highest Championship standards. For the PSI Golf Day, players will be treated to a breakfast on arrival before a round of Texas Scramble. Following the lunch there will be a Stableford competition featuring Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive challenges. Each of the competitions and every hole is available for sponsorship which will include branding on the course and in PSI magazine plus the opportunity to present the winners with their prizes alongside a special guest (in previous years this has been such sporting stars as Dennis Taylor and Paul Merson) before guests move into the Grand Hall for the Awards Ceremony itself. The Grand Hall, adjoining the Orangery, is fully self-contained with its own entrance, cloakrooms and bar and will be the ideal venue for the Awards Dinner, presentations and afterdinner entertainment. Guests will not only enjoy fine cuisine and wine, but also some great company and an enjoyable evening. The Estate also features on-site accommodation with each of the 48 individually designed bedrooms and suites and two estate country cottages at Stapleford Park having its very own personality, with a unique 'feel' and atmosphere.

together raising standards

Meet the installer This month we talk to Ian Zeff of Cryptex Security (UK) who can solve any problem his customers throw at him! Name: Ian Zeff Job title: Director Time in security/fire: 23 years Company name: Cryptex Security (UK) LLP Location: Barnet Areas of expertise: Security systems, security management, security training Accreditations: SSAIB and various awards and certifications

Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? A combination of both. Over the years we have built some amazing relationships with manufacturers and supply chain distributors. We like to believe we work in partnership on both accounts and stay loyal, giving and gaining business for and from each other, and we’re equally reliant on delivery costs, lead times, credit terms availability and flexibility. This can only be done with someone, a company we trust – how the best business has always and will always be done! Is third party accreditation beneficial to your company? Third party accreditations are immeasurable in terms of how beneficial they are – each and every one can help offer the client independent peace of mind that we have achieved certain standards– it’s as simple as that. Accreditations like NSI, SSAIB etc. create a strong brand and guidance throughout the industry. What would be a typical project for you? Is there such a thing as a typical project – we like to think that no two are the same. We work in a range of sectors, from residential requirements for alarms, through CCTV and today visual verification through to education, health, retail and even places of worship. As opposed to the typical sector though, a project would include a premises that requires the full works - either a new or an upgraded security system, integration, maintenance and monitoring. This way, we get to build up a partnership approach with our clients, and they know they can rely on us 24 / 7 / 365, especially with our new alarm receiving and control centre services! Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? I think the skill requirements are changing in our industry as we work towards more visual verification, home automation and intelligent buildings. The type and level of workforce must be prepared to change to reflect this. Never has there been more truth in Charles Darwin’s infamous quote that it is not the strongest of the species

40

that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. This is our challenge as an industry collectively. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? There is never a problem we cannot solve, and if we don’t have the solution, we always make recommendations to ensure the customer’s issues are responded to quickly and effectively. By example, we don’t offer keyholder services, and many of our new (and existing!) customers believe that it is a natural service for us to offer. However, what we do have a number of companies which we highly recommend and we are able to support keyholder services, so if there is a situation, we can be called to reset the alarm and ensure a property is safe and secure. What is the security industry’s biggest myth? Openly and honestly, the biggest myth is it works. You can have the most highfalutin system in the world, which may stop an opportunist, it may reduce the amount of time available in a property before the alarms are sounded, but it wouldn’t necessarily stop a determined criminal. This is why it’s critical to keep innovating in our industry so that new methods of prevention are launched, and until criminal masterminds manipulate them, will offer the latest source of security and ultimate peace of mind. What would make your job easier? Recently, it is increasing pressure from suppliers with their return or replacement procedures. We have to work through detailed technical departments and then either send it back in its original packaging, which would prove a nightmare for us to store, or provide a special hash number. Whilst this is all very well, if we get a call out at 2am in the morning with a technical fault, usually the departments aren’t available for us to work through the issue and then we would have to leave the customer in an unsafe environment, something we are absolutely not prepared to risk in any circumstances. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security product? As we move to be more reliant generally on wireless solutions, from an efficient, effective and aesthetic perspective, my ultimate security product would be a high definition wireless, professional CCTV camera that is fit for purpose. Although they are in the making, currently they are no way near the power and effectiveness required. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Is this still the fantasy question again? Sadly, not in my lifetime! If you won £25,000 what do you think you would you do with it? I would personally take a lot of pride in giving it all to a charity of my choosing.

PTZ CAMERAS

Tracking forwards The requirement of tracking via CCTV is usually the domain of the PTZ camera. Here we look at the technology today

The ability of the PTZ to be able to rotate and turn in order to follow the movement of a person under suspicion makes it more useful than a static camera would be

ver recent years the PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera has established itself as the ideal solution for the remote tracking of individuals and vehicles. For those operating in public areas such as high streets and retail environments the ability of the PTZ to be able to rotate and turn in order to follow the movement of a person under suspicion makes it more useful than a static camera would be. Obviously, the static camera also has its role to play in the operation, it is often the statics that are focused on a single scene that pick up the initial incident for the monitoring centre to then use the PTZ to track any further movement. PTZ cameras come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and can be used internally and externally. For outdoor use there are vandal-proof domes and ruggedized cameras made of stainless steel featuring wiper blades to keep the screen clear. HD PTZ domes give the added advantage of digitally zooming in to the image with much less deterioration on the image quality. However the PTZ does come with its own inherent expense; it needs a human at the end of it – obviously not permanently viewing images 24/7 but on-hand in case tracking is needed. This had led to some sectors, in the light of budget cuts, not specifying, requesting or commissioning of PTZ units however with the upturn in economic conditions the more expensive, but ultimately more results driven option could see an upturn of its own. And the R&D surrounding the cameras has not stopped either. “The developments in PTZ and domes have been extensive in terms of robustness and resolution. Possibly less so in terms of responsiveness,” says Karl Pardoe, March Networks Regional Sales Manager, UK and Ireland. “In all cases the advancements in HD and megapixel technology have benefitted both conventional PTZs and domes.” There are considerations for installers when it comes to PTZ cameras: “Responsiveness does still depend on the type of installation used,”

O

says Karl. “Cabled installations with joystick controllers offer great responsiveness. The adoption of IP networked installations with software driven PTZ and domes (GUI and PC mouse) are subject to reduced responsiveness. The speed of response can be impacted by the network itself and remote access by users. That said, overall improvements have been made to many product solutions.” One in, all out For some time, PTZ manufacturers and vendors have stated the notion that one PTZ or 360 dome can replace a number of static cameras and, therefore, save money and installation time. This is not entirely true and depends entirely on the application and what the user requires of the equipment. “There is some truth in this statement; as always there is more to consider here,” says Karl Pardoe. “A PTZ can provide the same coverage as multiple static cameras although in truth this is only really effective when the PTZ cameras are manned by operators. If a PTZ is only used on presets and tours, then they will miss much of the video evidence provided by multiple static cameras. A 360 degree dome will replace static cameras more readily in indoor environments but externally they still offer limited use and cannot really replace the full benefits of the zoom feature of PTZs for distance. You can save money on installation time and in some cases even on the cost of purchase however; the fact remains that usually a good security solution should be designed to include the features and benefits of a range of statics, PTZs and 360 degree cameras.” The most ideal surveillance applications are those therefore that combine the use of all types of cameras depending on the situation and the analytics (if any) being utilised. This is commonly where the operator will pick up movement in one of the static cameras, or a 360 running perimeter analytics might raise an alarm and then the user can get a clearer picture of the potential threat using the PTZ or have external alarms to drive the PTZ to a pre-set location that covers the area triggered by the alarm. This is also ideal because if a PTZ camera is used on its own, once the operator begins to zoom into the image or begin tracking, then the area under surveillance is narrowed and other events might be missed. Hence the ideal option of combining the various camera types into an application. Domes and PTZ cameras have not seen a slowdown in technological developments in recent years and the capabilities of the cameras are improving alongside those of other camera types. Including a PTZ into installations as part of a contract will require additional infrastructure but may well bring results for your customer.

“A PTZ can provide the same coverage as multiple static cameras although in truth this is only really effective when the PTZ cameras are manned by operators” 46

REMOTE CONTROL

Opportunities for installers As the dust settles on the 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, let’s consider the rise of mobile and cloudbased security services and how this translates into opportunities for installers

Our industry is increasingly shifting away from ‘on-premise’ towards ‘on mobile and in the cloud’ technology

48

erhaps no statistic better illustrates just how deeply stitched into the fabric of our daily lives mobile has become: according to Gartner, an analyst house, 50 per cent of us will reach for a tablet or smartphone first for all of our online activities by 2018. The majority of this activity will be underpinned by cloud; public, private or hybrid. Little wonder that organisations across the world are, in the words of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella “increasingly evolving towards a ‘cloud-first, mobile-first’ way of doing business”. The security industry doesn’t exist in a bubble, and just as cloud and mobile technology are reshaping every other sector, our industry is increasingly shifting away from ‘on-premise’ towards ‘on mobile, in the cloud’ too. The rise of the connected home – from smart meters to connected media and entertainment, from smart telehealth to security – is just one example of an opportunity that the mobile-cloud combination presents for security manufacturers and installers to drive revenues through these emerging technologies. Over the last few years, manufacturers have invested significant R&D time and money in creating new products and services that keep pace with the changes precipitated by the rise of mobile plus cloud. So, if the technology exists, why isn’t the adoption of cloud and mobile security solutions more mainstream? The answer is that the industry is currently in transition, as installers everywhere weigh up reservations and concerns with the

P

potential revenue opportunities they represent. As this influential group within the industry starts to embrace cloud and mobile, we predict an explosive rise in adoption of the technology. Let’s examine the two major concerns amongst installers, and debunk a couple of myths with the aid of Daniel Wan from Honeywell. “Most installers are used to working hand in glove with central monitoring stations (CMS's) to sell monitoring services,” says Daniel. “On the face of it, promoting ‘self-monitoring’ – empowering the customer to check their home and operate their alarm system from anywhere in the world – has the potential to infringe upon the revenues generated from these offerings. This is a myth. According to a recent market penetration study by CoESS (Confederation of European Security Services), less than 3.9% across the UK are monitored by a security company. Rather than eating away at existing revenue, installers pushing these services have a real opportunity here to open up additional, currently-dormant business streams. “A second hurdle is education,” continues Daniel. “For installers who have grown up installing analogue-based security systems, grasping concepts that are typically the domain of IT managers, can be intimidating. Again, this need not be an obstacle. Compared with the technical challenges presented by the earliest IP technology, installing cloud-based and mobileenabled security services is relatively user friendly and straightforward. In addition, as manufacturers like ourselves make training courses available free of charge for installers, there are a number of ways to quickly get up to speed on the core principles behind this new set of solutions on the market.” Finally, the one compelling reason why installers should be jumping in with both feet when it comes to adopting cloud and mobile technology, and promoting it to their customer base is changing consumer behaviour. “The fact is,” concludes Daniel, “end users are now ready to embrace this technology. Once technologies pass from ‘early adopter’ phase into the mainstream adoption phase, consumers quickly stop admiring them and start expecting them. As ever, this is a challenge and an opportunity for installers. Ignore this evolution in how consumers behave, and you won’t future-proof your business against the shifting winds in the market. Embrace it, and there is an opportunity to drive significant revenue today and tomorrow.” This is a stark warning for analogue–centric installers; it is clearly time to seriously consider widening your service portfolio to include cloud and mobile solution. Otherwise as the customer base becomes even more reliant upon smart devices for everyday tasks from home automation, security and communications, they will become more expectant of installers to be able to design and fit compatible solutions.

Fire detection and power management Tyco Fire Protection Products has enhanced its FireClass portfolio of fire detection technology with the introduction of conventional and addressable visual alarm devices (VADs) compliant with the EN54-23 standard. The FireClass LX range of EN54-23 compliant VADs has been designed with the system engineer, installer and end user in mind. With an emphasis on power management and consumption, FireClass offers a solution through the efficient use of light - design delivers the minimum illumination level of 0.4 lux required by EN54-23. This may also provide a reduction of up to 66% in the total installation cost compared to typical xenonbased technology, with no additional power supply requirements or labour costs and a cut in total consumption. Features built into FireClass LX VADs include switches to reduce current consumption from 1Hz to 0.5Hz, and a coverage selector which enables the installer to select a pre-set area of either 7.5m or 5m. This benefits end users by reducing the power required to operate the VAD and avoids wasting current if the area covered is smaller than the designed size of the component. Drives for larger scale demands WD has introduced WD Purple NV, a line of 3.5inch, 4 TB and 6 TB hard drives for the demands of scalable network video recorder (NVR) surveillance systems. Compared with standard WD Purple drives, the new system is designed for larger-scale network surveillance systems utilising higher hard drive bay counts and greater numbers of attached cameras, which demand increased storage capacity and durability. The new drives’ high capacities also enable long video retention periods for analysis and reference. WD Purple NV is also designed to withstand the demands of always-on digital NVR recording environments reportedly offering low power consumption and performance features typically reserved for higher end surveillance storage. “The global video surveillance market is expanding with the increased accessibility to easy-to-use systems for small businesses and municipalities,” said Matt Rutledge, senior vice president of HDD marketing at WD. “WD optimised the WD Purple NV line of hard drives for NVR digital surveillance systems to improve high-definition video playback for high-camera52

Simplified thermal imaging ULIS has announced the availability of Pico640 Gen2, a VGA format 17-micron thermal image sensor for 24/7 security night vision. The sensor is easy to install because it uses Hync/VSync clocking and an I2C standard communication protocol that are compatible with commercial camera standards. In addition, Pico640 Gen2 is described as easy to calibrate, even in shutterless mode, due to the predictability of the sensor’s behavioural patterns over varying operating temperatures. Other improvements include better image quality through higher image resolution (>300kpixels). This means that users can capture minute details up to a distance of several hundred metres. The product offers frame rates from 30Hz to 120Hz. Another parameter, the NEDT (Noise Equivalent Differential Temperature), has also been upgraded. NEDT enables a longer detection range and crisper images; the lower the NEDT, the sharper the image. Dipping far below 50mK means that this model has achieved a more than 15% improvement over earlier generations, without any trade-off in power consumption. It operates at less than 130mW with a 60Hz frame rate. This is in contrast to other thermal imaging sensors in this category, which tend to consume more power, typically >200 to 350mW at an equivalent frame rate. www.ulis-ir.com count applications. NVR surveillance systems can produce incredible amounts of data which makes the WD Purple NV hard drives a perfect solution for NVR systems needing high quality recording and playback and high capacity storage.” WD Purple NV 6 TB surveillance hard drives are shipping immediately to customers for qualification and are covered by a three-year limited warranty. WD Purple NV 4 TB hard drives will be available for qualification later this quarter. www.wd.com

PROMOTION

Future trends Adam Stroud, CEO of Paxton looks at the impact of integrated technology in the midmarket

here are many hugely powerful and featurerich security systems out there. Often these systems are designed to fulfil the requirements of very large projects and enterpriselevel installations. Even if the system didn’t start out that way, it often ends up becoming bloated with many specialised and project-oriented features. The allure of high value contracts is too strong to resist! While many regard more and more features as only being a good thing, the associated complexity can often lead to unsuitability for the mid-market. The truth is that the vast majority of non-residential buildings fit into the mid-market category, and are not large projects. While the large projects dominate the industry news columns, the greatest revenue potential lies within the unsung midmarket. Making advanced security systems practical and relevant to these types of buildings is essential to the development of the security industry. Paxton has a track record in this area. In fact, I would go so far as to say that doing this has been a major part of Paxton's long term success, allowing us to more than double the prevailing market growth every year for the last 20 years.

T

Success in the mid-market Firstly, what is the mid-market? Schools, gyms, shops, factories, offices, warehouses and much more. In access control terms, anything from 1 door to 50 doors. Some assume that the only requirements for being successful in the mid-market are affordability and a reduced feature set (masquerading as simplicity). This is not correct. I would say the key to success is accessibility to the customer. That means the local security installer, who the customer is likely to already have a relationship with, must be primed to recommend and install the system. To achieve this, installer training courses must be readily available, the system must be simple to sell, install and use (easy to say, difficult to achieve). The pre and post-sale support must be

first-class including telephone support, on-site support and returns policies. All of these things are flags waved by many manufacturers as 'standard offerings', but to really do them properly requires massive investment and commitment. The whole of Paxton is geared towards this and that's what it takes. Implications for the future Customers are demanding ever more from their security systems. Quite right too. In most other areas of technology the pace of change is frenetic, with products evolving and improving faster than ever before. In terms of buildings, it is no longer satisfactory to have multiple systems being administered and managed separately. Today's buildings must be more secure, convenient and energy efficient. The security industry currently satisfies the customer's requirement for cross-functional systems by facilitating integration. This 'pick and mix' approach, while very suitable for large projects, is not right for the mid-market. The hassle associated with selling, installing, using and maintaining separate systems is enough of a turn-off on its own. Add to that the complexity of getting systems to talk to each other, and then do something useful is the final nail in the coffin. As far as supporting the integrated megasystem, good luck. We recently conducted a survey of 1,400 Net2 sites. Even though around half of all these sites had some type of video surveillance in place, only 1.6% of all the Net2 systems were integrated with video (despite supporting integration to all the market leaders). This sobering statistic demonstrates the failure of the integration approach to penetrate this part of the market. I believe that the requirements outlined above will give rise to a new breed of 'building intelligence' systems offering cross-functionality in a single system. Why incur the cost and effort of installing several systems when the technology available today provides more than enough performance for a single system to achieve multiple tasks? Why add the complication of multiple systems when a single building intelligence system can satisfy your requirements? Why rely on multiple manufacturers that provide a limited subset of integrated functionality when you can get a truly cross-functional system from a single supplier? One thing is clear, there is certainly a place for the existing 'integration approach' and in many instances, it is the best solution. However, if integrated functionality is going to penetrate the mid-market, then it needs to be provided in a single package and work out of the box. That's building intelligence. www.paxton.co.uk

Multifocal system for Saints t. Mary’s Stadium has decided to use Panomera multifocal sensor technology from Dallmeier when modernising its CCTV system. The Stadium is the home of Southampton FC and holds more than 32,000 spectators, making it the largest football stadium in the South of England outside of London. A video surveillance system has been in place in the stadium for many years, monitoring the spectator terraces, the club shop, entrances and car parks – however it was deemed time to update the system. “Previously, we had used analogue cameras, and now we wanted to change to HD technology, to improve image quality, particularly for monitoring the terraces. The stadium is sold out regularly, and with the new video system we can offer our visitors even greater safety,” says Mark Hannibal, Venue Safety Manager. The safety officers decided to place their faith in the Panomera MFS technology from Dallmeier for their monitoring needs, particularly for safeguarding the visiting fans area in the north terrace, called the Northam Stand. “We had heard about this new technology at a conference held by the Football Safety Officers Association, and we then talked to Everton FC, who were already using the new camera technology in their Goodison Park Stadium,” Mark Hannibal continues. MFS technology makes it possible to keep the entire northern stand in view at one time. Even when the security operators are currently zoomed in on a suspicious individual, unlike with conventional PTZ cameras the system continues recording the rest of the scene. This then ensures that no incident is unseen and can be investigated in the highest possible resolution at any time afterwards as well. The safety officers were convinced of the technology’s capabilities with a test installation at a Southampton FC match. More than that: St. Mary’s Stadium decided to implement not only the Panomera but an entire installation by Dallmeier. The entire system including the workstations was already preconfigured by Dallmeier prior to shipping and the equipment was installed by Caldera Fire & Security, who had worked previously as the installer for St. Mary’s Stadium. After commissioning, both Caldera and the stadium security operators received training from Dallmeier. The Stadium is happy with its choice. “The clarity of the images has dramatically improved the view of all supporters, we have already marked up our first successes with it. Several offenders have made admissions of guilt very quickly after being confronted with the excellent imaging material,” says Mark Hannibal. www.dallmeier.com

The networked and integrated security solution from Bosch comprises fire and voice evacuation systems, video surveillance, access control, and intrusion detection. All of these systems are centrally managed and operated via Bosch's Building Integration System. With a total floor space of 100,000 square meters, 250 individual shops and restaurants, a hypermarket, a cinema complex and parking for 4,000 cars, Marmara Park 56

serves approximately 40,000 customers per day. Bosch partner Entegre designed a modular and scalable security system for the centre that meets the standards as set in norm EN54. The fire alarm system consists of four networked Modular Fire Panel 5000 Series with 59 loops supporting more than 5,000 fire detectors. It is integrated with the PRAESIDEO voice evacuation system which can also be used for announcements and background music in normal operations. This system with 64 amplifiers supports 140 independent zones, allowing targeted messaging in case of an evacuation. Video surveillance of the premises has been realised using almost 300 cameras and 18 digital video recorders. In addition, Entegre installed an access control system for non-public areas within the centre as well as the addressable intrusion detection system Modular Alarm Platform MAP 5000 with more than 1,000 detectors. This allows the operator to locate every alarm in real time, enabling fast response to any incident. The same holds true for the panic buttons which have been installed in all of the shops. Being an integrated solution, the entire security system can be configured and operated from one central location or distributed consoles. uk.boschsecurity.com

Museum installs IP video system The newly-built Serlachius Museum in Finland is benefiting from a video surveillance system powered by March Networks Command Professional video management software and capturing video from more than 90 IP cameras located throughout the facility. The solution provides the museum with oversight and awareness of visitor movements and will deliver video evidence in the event of an attempted theft. The museum comprises three exhibition spaces, a restaurant, a festival hall and a museum shop and it sits adjacent to Gösta Manor. The video system has been designed to cover the Manor, the new Pavilion which houses the museum’s collection of Finnish and European masterpieces and a glass-walled passageway which connects the two buildings. Thirty-six March Networks MegaPX WDR NanoDomes and WDR MiniDome Z cameras cover the interior of the Pavilion, capturing images during the day when bright sunlight streams through the glass-walled structure, as well as in near-dark conditions at night. Video from Gösta Manor is captured by 16 analogue cameras that were part of the museum’s previous video surveillance system, while 28 Infinova T Series bullet cameras record activity in the sculpture park, parking lot and other outdoor areas. Several Power-over-Ethernet switches provide power to the cameras. Live video from selected cameras is available for viewing at the museum’s reception area, and authorised museum employees are able to watch live or archived video from their own workstations using March Networks’ browser-based Command client. www.marchnetworks.com

Bespoke fire system for Spring Mews Eaton has announced that it was selected by ABCA Systems to deliver a fire alarm system for accommodation, leisure and retail facility Spring Mews in Vauxhall. In order to support business continuity, the Spring Mews project required a bespoke fire alarm solution with a range of cause-and-effect programming to meet the differing detection and alarm requirements for each of its facilities, including permanent or temporary accommodation, retail units and business premises. ABCA Systems chose to install 14 of Eaton’s CF3000 addressable control panels throughout the new facilities as a solution to the demands put on it by the diversity of the multiple-use premises. “We recommended these specific addressable control panels to ABCA Systems due to their functionality with simple operation,” added Mike Slater, Sales Account Manager at Eaton. “Additionally, their aesthetically pleasing design fits in perfectly within the new luxury facilities.” In addition to the panels, an array of fire ancillaries were also installed, including a ‘bell tone’ electronic sounder that was developed for the Spring Mews project. “The installation process was fast paced and no challenges were encountered during it,” said Philip Miller, Managing Director of ABCA Systems. “Although we had a few difficulties due to putting a two year programme into one, the panels worked well throughout.” www.cooperfire.com

Airport makes cable cost savings Linden Airport in the New York City metro area is home to light aircraft traffic and covers an area of 188 acres handling over 120 flight operations each day. Utilising a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, Linden Airport management recently upgraded the airport’s overall security. The modernisation included the installation of numerous IP surveillance cameras and associated video analytics, and an access control system with modern badging and biometrics. The touch points of the upgrade carried out by Technocality included fence entry points, public areas, fuel storage farm, hangars, runways and airport staff offices. With regard to IP surveillance, some of these locations were at signal transmission distances well beyond normal IEEE 100m Category 5 cable standards. This extended transmission distance became the application challenge and saw the installer search for an IP transmission product that would be able to meet this requirement. After a review of the transmission technologies available, Network Video Technologies’ (NVT) TBus Ethernet over UTP/ Coax transmission technology was selected. The cable cost savings were made by NVT TBus technology affording the re-use of many existing cables within the airport site for IP and PoE transmission, with distances ranging from 50 to 1,000ft via RG6 and RG59U coax and Cat3 voice grade cable. The use of the technology at the site has been so successful that in future, Linden Airport plans to include additional IP surveillance cameras, which will be connected and powered by NVT’s TBus Ethernet and PoE product technology. www.nvt.com

Cameras safely secure the Harbour As DĂşn Laoghaire Harbour in Ireland transforms from a ferry terminal into a marine, leisure and tourism destination, the infusion of new businesses over the last few years has served to highlight the shortcomings of the existing analogue CCTV system and its inability to secure the whole site. Now, the entire 100-hectare harbour complex is protected by a Hikvision hybrid solution designed and installed by Mercury SD. The new system retains all the existing coax cable within the harbour and uses 18 of the existing analogue CTV cameras to watch over the original ferry terminal and its immediate

62

surroundings. The new Hikvision SMART IP cameras have been added: some to the coax cabling using IP over Coax transceivers but most over Ubiquiti wireless links to extend the reach and scope of the surveillance to the further reaches of the harbour. All of the cameras link back to the pair of hybrid recorders in the harbour master's office, from where the PTZ IR speed dome camera located at the lighthouse is controlled. The DS-2DF7284-A IR speed dome installed at the lighthouse oversees some of the busiest parts of the harbour and is a core CCTV feed for the harbour team. This PTZ camera provides 360° surveillance through its panning capability, offers a 20x optical zoom capability to detect the smallest details and combines this with an IR range of up to 120 metres. The camera can also be shared by the emergency sea rescue services in the event of an incident in close proximity. All the other cameras are enclosed in a marine grade housing; being DS-2CD4012F 1.3 megapixel SMART IPC units along with DS2CD4032F-A 3 megapixel pieces. All offer triple video streams, multiple alarm triggers, a transmission rate of up to 150 Mbps and 802.11n wireless support. Finally, the DS-9016HFI-ST 16/16 Hybrid Recorders enabled the new SMART IP cameras to be added while retaining the majority of the older analogue cameras. www.hikvision.com

New sports bar invests in fire detection

Walsall Housing Group installs 380 cameras Walsall Housing Group (whg) has improved resident safety with the installation of 380 Panasonic surveillance cameras that cover 17 high rise blocks. whg Technical Specialist, Paul Martin, said, “Before the surveillance system was installed, we relied on foot patrols to monitor the blocks every night. With a maximum of only two patrols per night, we weren’t really catching anything. With the CCTV recording 24 hours a day it means we can catch more and be reactive. From our control room we can identify incidents and alert our patrols so they can investigate.” whg has been able to assist the police with the help of the CCTV system to aid in prosecutions and investigations. Their work with the police includes shutting down and preventing illegal activity, often external to the whg properties. Paul Martin recalls, “On one occasion we were asked to help with an investigation in to a man who had allegedly stolen a car. The police asked him where he had been at the time, and he claimed to be in the pub down the road. We had a look through the CCTV and we managed to pull up a man matching his description and the location. The police were able to use that footage to aid in a prosecution.” The network of cameras are displayed on a 5x2 video wall configuration of 55” Panasonic displays located in the whg control room. Activity captured by any camera is automatically brought up on screen through motion detection, saving the need for manually patrolling through the hundreds of cameras. Panasonic also developed an incident manager package specifically for the Group. This makes it easy to track any incidents and integrates with whg's CRM software, allowing for efficient reporting. The security solution also benefits from an audio system which allows staff in the control room to communicate with potential trouble makers caught on camera. panasonic.net 64

Corey’s Sports Bar, a newly refurbished nightspot in Tamworth, has invested in a fire detection solution from Fike Safety Technology (FST). Located in the town centre, the new bar opened at the end of 2014 and offers local residents sports, music, entertainment and food - seven days a week. FST approved systems integrator, Justice Fire & Security, designed and installed a solution based on the company’s Duonet single-loop intelligent addressable fire alarm system. “The technology built into the Duonet panel is designed to significantly reduce false alarms and provide the flexibility required for demanding environments such as nightclubs” explained, Steve Grant, Installations Manager of Justice Fire & Security. Forty devices including Multipoint ASD detectors, call points, sounders and beacons, were installed in the bar - up to 200 devices can be installed on a single loop. The Multipoint ASD detector provides flexibility through choices of detection mode, combined with an optional builtin 90dBA sounder and strobe. The unit can be set to a single mode or a combination, for a choice of up to 15 different settings. Each detector also has an in-built loop isolator as well as optional I/O for local control and switching. This single device can be used in all fire detection applications simply by changing its mode of operation. For example, the detectors protecting the dance floor have been programmed to a heat mode as the bar uses a smoke machine for effects. This flexibility also allows the system to be easily re-configured if the layout of the venue changes at any time in the future. To aid evacuation in the event of fire, standalone strobes were installed in the toilets as well as on detectors on the dance floor. The use of integral strobes eliminates the need to install a separate strobe and therefore saves time and money. Loop mounted I/O modules were used to automatically turn off the sound system and turn on the lighting if an alarm is triggered. www.fikesafetytech.co.uk

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Sheep shoe shop shuffle You know how it is when you’re talking to a shop assistant and someone else butts into the conversation? This CCTV footage from a shoe shop in Barneveld, Netherlands, catches the moment one shopper was interrupted when a couple of sheep ran in on their way to sheep shearing skills exhibition. The two sheep soon realised their mistake and fled the scene, presumably looking for the wool shop next door. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeqfhhBO8Ts

Did you spill my pint? In our Off The Wall section we’re not unaccustomed to video footage claiming to show supernatural behaviour, however an exploding pint is a new one on us. This CCTV recording shows the moment a pint spontaneously explodes in Drogheda’s Barney Mac’s. There’s no risk of a left drink being spiked here, it will just be detonated instead. The poor punter leaves his drink to speak to the landlord and while his back is turned the pint erupts. There then appears to be a few rounds of “did you spill my pint?” while bemused onlookers try to explain what just happened. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWuJQRgSJGE

You rob me, I rob you! This CCTV footage taken in Malaysia shows a woman walking down a side street when a motorbike rider jumps off his vehicle to snatch her handbag. After a brief struggle the thief runs off, fleeing the scene. By the time he remembers that he had a vehicle in place for a swift getaway, the woman has turned the tables on him and stolen his bike. Now he knows how his victims feel.

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Thick with a brick A car thief was knocked out when he tried to steal a Mercedes coupe parked outside a pub in Drogheda, Co Louth, Ireland by throwing a brick at the driver’s side window which bounced back, striking him in the head. If that was not bad enough for the thief, the incident was caught on CCTV outside the Pheasant Bar where he was found lying in the road by the pub’s owner who initially assumed that the man had been injured in a hit-and-run accident. An arrest has been made and investigations are ongoing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbeDgiou6-U

Unsafety barrier PAIN WARNING: Remember the Highway Code of “Look left, then right, then left again”? This has now been amended to include “look up and get out of the way” as perfectly shown in this CCTV footage. A man retrieving a small ball steps out to collect it before he’s cracked on the head by a lowering barrier. To make matters worse a car then drives over his feet. Very fortunately he appears to escape with just a limp as he takes off after the driver. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow9tn_5Ds20
