NETWORKING? This month’s Panel question about diversification has raised a lot of comment from industry experts
t’s no secret that some professionals from the IT side of the installation sector are now fitting security systems. There is such a demand for one person to fit all of a contract’s equipment including CCTV, fire protection, audio/visual, routers, point of sale etc that PSi even launched a magazine dedicated to the market last month. The level of interest we had for PSiX was phenomenal and the response to the publication has been very positive, but it has led us to wonder on the future of the security installer. In the past the only competition to the traditional security installer had been from other such installers and perhaps the occasional electrician. But today, with the introduction of IP, this has changed. The desire for one-stop-shopping has led IT distributors to stock security equipment as their customers, the IT integrators, are fitting cameras etc as well as networks. This month we asked our panel of experts to tell us what the security installer can do in the face of the influx of new competition and whether diversification might be a good idea for them. In the main the message that came in was along the similar lines that you would probably use yourself if you were pitching for a new contract. While the IT installer is perfectly able to fit a CCTV system for example, he/she does not have the expertise of positioning, lighting etc that the security installer does. You might say: “Do you want an expert to fit the system, or someone who can have a go at it?” which is true – at least for the moment. One thing is guaranteed, the security knowledge of the network installer will only improve in time so perhaps, just as they have diversified, it is time for security installers to do the same. The answers in our Panel feature make for very interesting reading and may give you some aid in deciding how to take steps to deal with the current trend. You could of course choose to focus more on the core competencies of your business and specialise – this narrows your field of opportunity but can add credibility to your brand along with certification from august bodies. No longer are installers faced with the ‘analogue or IP’ question, with the development of properly converged systems you’ll need to have a good understanding of both in order to deal with the maximum number of contracts available. HD CCTV doesn’t have to be IP of course, but if you want to link the systems into modern FM software then networking is desirable. There is good news for those still reluctant to meet the IP challenge head-on with manufacturers now producing genuine plug-and-play network CCTV. Forget the systems of a few years ago that promised simplification but required each individual camera to be recognised with an IP address etc, there are now camera systems that you really do just plug in and off you go, one of which we tried out this month (see News) and genuinely configured in less time than it takes to boil a kettle. There’s no excuse for claiming IP is beyond your capabilities anymore. Whether you diversify or specialise depends on the types of jobs you want to go for in future, but you will need to address the issue because the playing field will level out eventually as more and more of our daily lives are networked and the next generation of network savvy installers enter the market.

Center Group in administration – potential buyer sought Insolvency practitioners SFP has been appointed Administrators to High Wycombe-based CCTV security systems distributors Center Group after the firm encountered financial difficulties. Center Group specialised in the distribution of CCTV systems and had a relationship with Panasonic, JVC and Sony to distribute its systems from its base in Lane End near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. In 2007, company turnover peaked at £7 million, but due to the economic downturn, the company experienced a downturn in business
that put greater pressure on its cash flow leading to it accruing significant debts to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and creditors. SFP’s Simon and Daniel Plant – both licensed members of the Insolvency Practitioners’ Association – were appointed Joint Administrators on 23rd September 2013. “The security industry has been particularly hard hit by the downturn in the economy,” says Simon Plant, Director of the SFP Group. “The company ceased to trade prior to our appointment and we are in the process of marketing the company for potential buyers.”
Micro-Vision Fire and Security acquired by CIA CIA Fire and Security has completed the purchase of Micro-Vision Fire and Security, creating an independent provider of home and business security services for the region. The acquisition extends both organisations’ ability to deliver service focused security solutions, meet client needs, increase their operating areas and provide clients with a wider range of services. Matthew Harrison, operations director at CIA Fire and Security Group, comments: “Our purchase of Micro-Vision is part of a long term strategy. Micro-Vision shares our ethos of great service, people and performance and the combination of the two companies will offer substantial benefits to all our clients.” The portfolio of companies, which includes CIA Fire and Security, Micro-Vision Fire and Security and A4 Security will henceforth be known as CIA Fire and Security Group. The Group’s headquarters will be in Cirencester with regional offices in Calne and Gloucester.

Tavcom upgrades CCTV facilities Tavcom has completed a major upgrade of the CCTV training facilities at its Bishops Waltham training centre. From September 2013, students attending one of Tavcom’s BTEC certificated CCTV courses will be able to take advantage of ‘hands-on’ facilities which provide an immediate opportunity for students to put theory into practice, with the help of analogue and digital equipment supplied by brands including AXIS, Dallmeier, IDIS, Panasonic, Pelco, Samsung Techwin and Vista. “The market for IP network based video surveillance systems is growing almost exponentially but in the UK, more than any other country in the world, it is still steeped in analogue CCTV technology,” said Paul Tennent, Tavcom’s Managing Director. “With this in mind, we have set out our new CCTV training facilities to make it easy to educate installers, operators, security managers and system designers on how to extend the life of an existing analogue system by introducing hybrid solutions, whilst starting on the process of migrating to a Video over IP solution.” The investment made in the new training facilities reflects Tavcom’s determination to maintain its position in the security systems training market. “To complement the skills of our handpicked expert tutors, all of which have real life experience of installing, servicing and operating CCTV systems, we now have the best equipped workshop facilities anywhere in the world!” said Paul Tennent. “However, with technology continuing to advance at a rapid rate, we will not hesitate in the future to continue to upgrade our training facilities as and when required.”
IP system training and demo centre open IDIS has opened a purpose-built training and demonstration centre at its London facilities, following the launch earlier this year of its DirectIP full-HD surveillance solutions. Using a range of cameras and NVRs, customers can join the monthly DirectIP sessions or book a dedicated training slot on demand. First level training, designed for 8-32 channel installers and users, provides participants with all the skills they need for operating and installing DirectIP solutions in half a day. Greg Kulesza, Technical Manager at IDIS, commented: “The training sessions really prove that DirectIP does exactly what it says on the tin; plug-and-play simplicity and high-performance full-HD surveillance. We provide each participant with an NVR and two-cameras, then I step out to make a cup of tea and when I come back, they have it installed with live streaming. Despite protests and proclaiming a lack of technical ability, two gentlemen from a well-known security magazine tried it out last week and they were up and running in a couple of minutes!” A choice of two further and more in-depth training sessions are available for large to enterprise-wide applications, covering sophisticated features such as fail-safe redundancy, multi-site monitoring plus the enterprise-level IDIS video management solution. And just in case you were wondering, it was indeed the PSi Editor Andy Clutton and Advertisement Director David Lewis that successfully configured the DirectIP system at the training centre!

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Neil Addinall, Managing Director of Mayfair Security, one of the largest independent multi-sector security companies in the North of England. In the five years since I interviewed your CEO, Chris Burton, what's changed at the Mayfair Group? In this time we have changed from a partnership to a Private Limited group of companies to facilitate growth. We felt that it was important to create very clear demarcations between the different sectors of the group which include Mayfair Security, Mayfair Careline, Mayfair Fire and First County Monitoring. The main reason for our focus on this process is to achieve transparency across the business so we can see where we perform well and in turn, develop best practice. You have a long history within the electrical retail and wholesale sector. What has driven your decision to join the Mayfair group? My major motivation to join was the huge potential the company held in the retail sector, an area I was already experienced in so I was eager to help this progress. To excel in this industry a huge amount of time and effort is required, there are no shortcuts. It was immediately apparent that Mayfair possesses the vision to go forward and the substance to achieve their goals, which was very attractive to me. Are Mayfair planning to go national or stay localised to the North East? We plan to remain very much in the North East for two important reasons. First and foremost our First County customers expect a totally independent service. We wouldn’t want to infringe on our customer base and route to market by competing with them via Mayfair Fire & Security. Secondly, we pride ourselves on service delivery and achieving response times that are better than the standard requirement. Ensuring that our resource is not overstretched is vital in order to maintain this service level. In your opinion what is the best technology advancement in the electronic security sector in recent years? I’d say across all disciplines from data transfer, CCTV, Access Control and signalling it’s probably IP. It’s definitely offered improvements in many of these areas and more value for money. For IP to provide benefits in the signalling arena however, the IT infrastructure must be resilient enough to withstand the threat of exposures. For example we would use an IP path as a back up to a radio path for our National Accounts with larger multi-site commercial jobs. These customers would generally have the right components in place within their IT & communications network to ensure there is minimal threat coming from the IT infrastructure. Mayfair also own an ARC, how important is this as a differentiator with your competitors? There are still very few companies able to offer both a monitoring and installation service. It means that all of our clients benefit from our depth of knowledge in both areas. We can empathise with an installer on the phone to an ARC operator and make improvements based on the experiences of our own installers.

INTERVIEW
DETECTING GROWTH This month we meet Mark Tibbenham, Managing Director of GJD Manufacturing, who discusses growing the detector business and his hopes for the future
t’s fair to say that the GJD MD, Mark Tibbenham has travelled a bit and had a varied career. He started life in London, but at the age of 16 moved to South Africa where he eventually studied for a degree in electronic engineering. After that he spent 13 months on the ice in Antarctica recording the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights). On returning to South Africa he worked on living out the dream he nurtured in Antarctica - being the owner of his own business, a building company. With a background in electronic engineering however, he soon returned to the field and joined a chemical company as a process control engineer. From here he joined a consultancy practice working on large automation systems and then formed his own firm of engineers only to subsequently be headhunted by a South African company that made pay-as-you-go electricity meters. This business grew substantially and received an award for export sales from Nelson Mandela, but after a while Mark decided to move back to England and became general manager of a company that made street lighting controls in Halifax. In 2003 Mark was tasked with the job of finding a suitable company for acquisition, one that fitted the market and portfolio of his employer, and this is where he came across GJD. The more he looked at the business, the more he decided that it suited his own desires of owning a company and, along with some business associates, he bought it in 2004. Since then the turnover has increased from £900,000 to £3m. Mark has recently added to the company portfolio with the acquisition of Advanced LED Technology; thus adding another

£1m to the overall turnover. ALT designs and manufactures a range of professional white light and covert IR LED illuminators for CCTV applications; which ideally compliment the range of GJD detectors In the future Mark hopes to add further businesses to the fold through acquisition with a goal of achieving revenues of £10m with the GJD group of companies over the next three to four years. This year the company celebrates its 30th anniversary and we caught up with Mark shortly after he delivered his state-of-the-nation address to staff at the Heywood HQ in which he also revealed his plans for setting up GJD Asia Ltd. How are you finding the UK market? The market is definitely swinging out of the recession, but to be honest the last few years have been a battle. We’re lucky in that we’ve grown each year (overall growth is from exports and OEM products), but the UK has turned a corner. There are a few arms to the company: CCTV triggers, detectors for security lighting and perimeter pre-alarms as well as other intruder products including IR beams, GSM diallers, voice modules and rapid deployment CCTV systems. Business for all of these categories is very buoyant at present. The development of the detector activated CCTV code of practice BS8418 and its subsequent reviews was quite exciting for GJD. We were privileged to be an active member on the BS8418 review committee and gave advice on detector/CCTV applications as well as good installation practise, for example ensuring that the fields of view of the cameras, detectors and illuminators matched as closely as possible.

INTERVIEW
In terms of market concerns, video analytics is certainly an emerging complementary, or even alternative, technology to the discreet systems that we offer. VA software is really only reliable when applied to fixed cameras and it is unlikely that you would replace every detector with a camera. There is certainly a place for both in the market and the uptake in VA has driven us to develop new systems, such as detectors with analytics on board that will meet the needs of the installers and specifiers. These units will utilise both technologies: the PIR will first detect presence and the VA analytics will then verify that it is a human. There was the obvious push in the market around the Olympics last year, but I now sense that there are more enquiries coming in, especially at this time of year as the nights are drawing in and security lighting becomes more important. What types of companies are GJD interested in acquiring? We are looking for complementary technology companies that tie-in with the fact that we make detectors for triggering cameras and lights and that act as perimeter intrusion pre-alarms. With this in mind it was an obvious fit for us to purchase Advanced LED Technology, which manufactures and designs infrared and white light illuminators. Our business is about perimeter protection and early warning detection. With this in mind we would be on the lookout for a company that can bring to the Group other products that would widen our offering in the outdoor sensing market e.g. point to point detection, perimeter breach systems, etc. We are fortunate in that there are only a few manufacturers that have developed reliable technology for discreet external detection. We operate in a fairly niche market and are able to proudly sustain a UK workforce and explore growth opportunities by bringing other niche products on-board.
“We are on the lookout for a company that can bring to the Group other products that would widen our offering in the outdoor sensing market e.g. point to point detection, perimeter breach systems, etc” 14
What is your relationship with the Harmony Alliance? I’m really excited about the Harmony Alliance and its potential for the future. It was originally set up by four companies Texecom, TDSi, Elmdene and GJD, but since the acquisition of Advanced LED Technology it is now made up of five British companies. We are all working together to supply systems from each expert company; perhaps a detector from us that utilises Texecom’s wireless mesh technology and access control from TDSi, powered by Elmdene for example. We are still actively looking for other companies to complete the offering, maybe a camera manufacturer and a
fire detection business. It is great that we can work together and share knowledge especially when it comes to developing new systems and projects. Having like-minded individuals that you can bounce ideas off is a real help and the support is invaluable. Do you see any differences in the demands of the UK market to those abroad? External detectors in the UK are primarily used to trigger cameras or to switch security lighting; however in Europe outdoor detectors are used as pre-alarms. Outdoor wired detectors have not really taken off very much in Western Europe such as Germany and Austria. Italy however is the next biggest market for external detection outside of the UK. There are more requests for wireless technology coming from abroad than at home and we are certainly seeing a lot more of our export orders using this technology. When it comes to developing new systems, do you seek input from installers? Very much so. When we were lucky enough to acquire GJD I could see that the products needed a facelift and some rebranding and we spent a year talking to installers about a new detector and the features they would like to see – this led to the introduction of the D-TECT range. Because we are a fairly small company we can be fleet footed when it comes to developing systems or upgrading technology and so when the units first hit the market we were able to make any further improvements quite quickly. It is vital that manufacturers react to market needs, there is no point in designing something that we think the market needs, developments must reflect the requirements of end users, installers and specifiers. One such area is in rapid deployment security systems, where the demand for portable, self-contained, CCTV systems has grown particularly for building sites and along train lines and roads. The products contain everything that is required for remote CCTV surveillance (including camera, router, loudspeaker, DVR, wireless detectors, etc.) and only need fixing to a wall or on a pole and mains power plugging in. Everyone at the moment is talking about IP. We recognised that this is an area that we needed to move into and we will have a range of IP-based detectors coming through for release shortly. The advantages of internet connectivity are obvious for installers, just by using a single cable for bi-directional communications means that you can change a detector’s settings

SMOKE DETECTION
remotely online and so reduce maintenance down time and costly site visits. Equally important is the market driven request for open protocols to enable any manufacturer’s products to talk to any others. Whether this will ever materialise is debatable as it could mean a dilution in the sales of your own products in favour of a competitors. The BSIA launched the CP249 protocol with this mind. We do have products that communicate on CP249 and I understand that other manufacturers are also looking to make this an option: the jury is out. What do you feel about IFSEC moving to London in 2014? I’m very positive about this news to be honest. Initially I was little worried, but I think that was just fear of the unknown and on reflection the event needed a change anyway and the move to three days does make a lot of sense. The attraction of London of course is that the international visitors will be drawn to the show, but conversely as an exhibitor the concern is that installers from the North may not want to travel to London to see what’s on show. However knowing what UBM are doing to engage with visitors as well as the seminars that they will be coordinating I do sincerely believe that the show is going to be a ‘must see’.
Also the area around ExCeL is not as expensive as people might think and there are something like 15,000 hotel beds in the locale so there are no problems booking accommodation – we’ve got ours booked anyway! As far as I know all of the Harmony members will be there so we hope to have a great show. Where will GJD be this time next year? I would like to think that our growth plans are well underway and that we may have made another acquisition. We have some new and exciting products coming out next year and I’m optimistic that they will quickly gain a foothold in the market. I’m very excited about the future and, importantly, I’m still having fun!

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
Open IP, non-proprietary access control Axis Communications has entered the physical access control market by introducing a network door controller with built-in web-based software. The A1001 Network Door Controller which will be launched in the UK in 2014 is a non-proprietary, open IPbased access controller. It is a platform for two different solutions. Axis Entry Manager (AXIS A1001 with built in software) is a ready-made solution for small- to mid-sized businesses with typically ten doors and basic access control requirements. For larger enterprise systems, the A1001’s open application programming interface enables Axis’ Application Development Partners (ADP) to meet specific customer requirements. Further features of the A1001 Network Door Controller include open architecture that allows easy integration of video, intrusion detection and other systems, support for Power over Ethernet to reduce the need for separate power cables and proprietary cables and also the ability for cardholder data and system configurations to be automatically stored and synchronised between controllers and managed from any computer in the system. www.axis.com
NVR includes management tools and mobile viewers AVer has announced the release of the E5016 NVR, a Linux-based network video recorder that delivers a performance throughput of 120Mbps with 16 channels at up to 5MP and 30fps per channel, ensuring no detail is missed. It includes camera features such as region of interest, smart stream, motion detection and privacy zones to simplify operation alongside intelligent streaming to allow users to preview all 16 channels in real time. Four removable HDD trays and RAID support enhance storage capacity and reliability, with further capacity available via e-SATA interface with direct-attached storage performance. With tricodec compression, this equates to non-stop recording on all channels at full HD 1080p resolution for around a month. The E5016 is easy to set up and use, with plug and play support and an intuitive, user-friendly GUI that offers simplified click-anddrag preview selection and a range of smart tools to significantly reduce training time and related costs. Also included are a range of remote access and management applications, including AVer’s CMS (central management software) to offer control over configuration of remotely connected cameras, including remote recording and playback. Additionally, AndroidViewer and iViewer mobile applications allow users to monitor and control events from a smartphones or tablets in real time. www.aver.com/uk
NVR utilises varying compression formats Geutebruck’s net_porter NVR standard model comes with eight separate 1000Base-TX ports for IP camera connection with a further eight ports possible using a switchboard. With an integral 180W PoE 1GBit switch for up to 16 IP cameras, no external ancillary components such as camera PSUs, switches or midspan components are required. Installing and connecting cameras is reported to be easy and each camera is automatically allocated its unique IP address using DHCP. The net_porter utilises Omnibrid technology which enables the use of different video compression formats within the same system (M-JPEG, H.264 [Multimedia], H264CCTV, MPEG4CCTV, MPEG4CCTV/MP). Other features include TCP/IP digital matrix functionality, port status indicators, centralised IP camera and switch configuration, and remote controlled voltage management with power consumption display for all PoE cameras. net_porter comes with a 2 TB database as standard but can accommodate up to four internal database disks. www.geutebrueck.com

CCTV for parking enforcement
Water detection via intruder system Cooper Security has announced the introduction of a new water detection solution that can be integrated into the company’s Scantronic intruder detection system. Suitable for use in both domestic and commercial environments, DET-RWATER sends an alert to a control panel when the presence of water is identified. By placing a series of radio sensors in strategic locations within a building, in the event of a leak, water is detected and a signal sent to the control panel, whereby an alarm is activated detailing its exact location. This, in turn, gives the homeowner or business manager the opportunity to react before the problem develops into something far more serious. The DET-RWATER system includes a 3V CR2 lithium battery power supply, with a service life of up to three years. Designed to be unobtrusive, the transmitter dimensions are 90(h)x35(w)x30(d)mm, while the sensor measures 45(h)x10(w)x15(d)mm. The system uses radio transmission so there is no need to run cables, which minimises disruption to the internal layout of the building. www.coopersecurity.co.uk 18
Videalert has introduced a digital CCTV system for the enforcement of stopped vehicle offences, specifically designed to reduce the incidence of stopping and parking on the zig-zag lines outside schools. The system is based on the same technology used for moving traffic offences such as banned turns and box junctions. Using a single camera, the Videalert system continuously monitors the restricted area and automatically zooms in to capture the number plate of any vehicle that stops during the period of time defined by the local traffic order, typically twice a day during the school opening and closing hours. The camera then automatically zooms out and captures relevant parking signage and the video evidence pack is transmitted to the council for review, before automatically generating a PCN. An additional benefit of the system is that it can also record video outside schools 24/7, providing further protection to pupils, staff and premises. videalert.com/stopped-vehicle
VMS even easier to deploy! Milestone Systems has announced the next versions of its products: XProtect Essential 2013, XProtect Express 2013, XProtect Professional 2013 and XProtect Enterprise 2013. XProtect Professional 2013 provides security operators with a graphical overview of the entire installation from a single interface, empowering them to react quickly to incidents and efficiently manage alarms. The Alarm Manager ensures users are notified when unwanted behaviours occur. The new product offerings are designed to simplify initial deployments of XProtect and to enable users at different skill levels to set up a Milestone IP video solution. This helps distributors to broaden the offerings of XProtect so the benefits of IP video surveillance are available to a more varied reseller audience. The new configuration procedure removes the challenges and decreases the time needed to initially deploy and set up the system. This gives installers more time for the rest of their business and helps integrators who primarily install analogue systems to feel comfortable working with Milestone XProtect VMS, even without IP network and IT skills. www.milestonesys.com

CCTVdirect - Cobra 960H eight channel DVR
8.5 out of 10
he Cobra 960H Digital Video Recorder range is available in 4,8 or 16 channels and provides up to 960 x 576 recording resolution to complement high resolution analogue cameras. For anyone unfamiliar with this resolution, 960H potentially offers a 33% increase over standard D1 resolution and enables analogue video to be viewed in wide screen without stretching the image. Manufactured in Korea, the DVR is of compact dimensions with sufficient internal space for 2 HDDs providing up to 4TB of onboard storage and the facility to add further external storage via an eSATA connection on the rear of the unit. Operating system is Linux embedded and the unit has a specified maximum recording frame rate of 25fps per channel at all resolutions. Depending on the model, there are a multitude of ports available on the back of the unit comprising 4-16 video and audio inputs, 1 audio out, HDMI, VGA and BNC (spot) monitor outputs, 1 POS input, 4 alarm in, 1 alarm out, RS485 for PTZ and keyboard control, RJ45 network, eSATA and DC power input. Two USB sockets are situated on the front panel for mouse and video archiving; there is no DVD drive. The DVR is well packaged with the accessories contained in a separate box next to the recorder itself. The ‘Quick Setup Guide’ provides essential user information but the main operating manual (on CD) will generally need to be referred to when configuring a unit for the first time. That said, the guide provides the necessary login and basic user information for the unit, web browser and management software application. Once powered up, administrator login is required in order to access the set-up menu. The quick setup guide suggests that the hard drives will need formatting before use but our 8 channel 1TB unit arrived with the HDD already formatted.

Configuration may be achieved using the front panel controls or the supplied remote control and menu structure is straightforward. The DVR’s network setting is DCHP out of the box but as soon as this has been deselected, default static IP settings appear. Thereafter, configuration may be altered via the web browser or monitoring software applications (supplied on the CD). Three recording resolutions are available, (CIF, D1 and 960H) and audio recording is available for each video channel (all models) although only one audio output is provided. Maximum recording time may be set between 1 and 31 days or unlimited. Search options include time/date, event based (alarm, POS, audio) and a smart search feature based on defining an area for motion search with an image. Playback of video appeared quite smooth and is incremental from 1x to 32x and then jumps to 300x. Exporting footage (called back-up on the DVR) may be completed to any storage device supporting USB2.0. There is also a JPEG frame capture facility for exporting stills. When tested, export of a five minute length of footage from one camera to a USB stick took in the region of 30 seconds (including the back-up player). The unit supports DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) enabling remote access through the internet from any location and may be configured provide event information via email using SMTP (up to five email addresses). Supplied with the DVR is a CD containing two software applications: Video Monitoring Software (VMS) and Remote Monitoring Software (RMS). The RMS enables remote viewing and playback of single DVRs and essentially looks the same as the web browser interface. VMS provides similar functions for multiple DVRs (sites). These loaded easily and it was relatively simple to connect to the DVR. Also on the CD are the user manuals for the DVR itself and the software applications (including the web-browser). Unfortunately unless you are fluent in Korean, you will only be able to read the DVR and VMS documents! One other minor frustration is that some icons had rollover pop-ups detailing their use whilst others didn’t. Hopefully both of these will be remedied on later versions. Overall, the Cobra 960H offers an easy to install and use feature rich analogue digital video recorder with the potential for high resolution recording and playback (in conjunction with the relevant high resolution cameras). With the addition of the Video Monitoring Software, a scalable solution can easily be created. As with most products these days, an Apple/Android application (SmartEyes) is also available.

BIOMETRICS
A NEW LEASE OF LIFE? ith the recent launch of the new iPhone 5S (which uses a fingerprint system for secure access), biometrics and its potential influence on the consumer audience’s understanding of it as highly usable security technology have been brought to the fore. According to John Davies of TDSi: “As the world has been getting the first glimpses of the new Apple iPhone 5C and 5S, it’s not the funky colours of the 5C that have caught my eye but the fingerprint reader that has been introduced on the new 5S. Whilst fingerprint readers are nothing new, I believe the inclusion of this technology on a smartphone is an important indication that biometric security is becoming more mainstream than ever before. “For the last few decades PIN security has been ubiquitous, so it was an obvious step that smartphones would also use this technology. But there can be complications, it’s easy to forget a PIN and equally it can be possible for a quick-witted individual to learn this and use it for unauthorised entry without the rightful owner necessarily being aware anything is amiss! Fingerprints (and indeed anything that uses the unique properties of the human body, such as facial recognition or iris recognition) have great advantages. They won’t be forgotten or mislaid and can’t be replicated by any simple method. So the user will never struggle to prove their identity!” John continues: “Biometric security is already a very significant element of the security industry so it’s interesting to see the publicity with the launch of such a high-profile consumer product. It’s right that consumers will be able to choose

biometrics as an alternative to technologically and practically inferior methods of identification. In a fast moving world, people don’t want inconvenience – they want to be able to securely use what they are entitled to with a minimum of fuss, whilst maintaining full security. I suspect this will be an important landmark in the wider adoption of biometric security and will encourage the majority of people to call for it elsewhere in their daily lives.” The inclusion of biometrics on the new iPhone is also considered a good thing by Shaun Oaks of ievo: “It brings biometrics into the mainstream,” he says. “If you look at what Apple has done, they have used it very much as a marketing tool to gain more media coverage (like they did with Siri) and the biometric function itself is only on the phone to add a level of security for purchasing apps, not for anything else. However, if they were to be

The biometric market New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Commercial Biometrics Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $1.48 billion in 2012 and estimates this to reach $6.15 billion in 2019. In addition to fingerprint, facial and iris biometrics, the study covers hand geometry, voice, and signature technologies. “Better end-user recognition of the unique capabilities of biometric technologies, including enhanced security as well as physical and logical access control in applications, has helped vendors win a number of projects and contracts,” said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Ram Ravi. “Focus on building robust, error-free and efficient solutions will create added revenuegenerating opportunities for biometric vendors.” According to Frost & Sullivan, although improvements in technology augur well for the market, any large-scale biometric project in enterprises takes long to implement and cover every employee. Since many businesses work within a restricted budget for a limited time span, the high cost and extended duration of deploying biometrics restricts installation rates. Moreover, the lack of knowledge among customers, fear over loss of privacy, and uncertainty over the reliability and security of stored data also dampen adoption of biometrics. With awareness at an early stage, solution providers, system integrators, and value-added resellers are the accepted channel for distribution and therefore, their decisions will decide future uptake levels. “Business strategies with customised ROI models and reduced opportunity costs are expected to help biometrics sustain momentum in emerging markets,” revealed Ravi. “Regulatory mandates and procedures in compliance with medical standards are necessary to favour biometrics market expansion.”
“This launch brings biometrics into the mainstream and reconfirms that the point that with biometrics you don’t need to remember a PIN or have an ID card or fob”
24
using biometrics for anything else I think it would be a mistake because it uses AuthenTec (a company that Apple acquired) technology which doesn’t look for many points of data, so it’s not too difficult to circumvent.” In fact Germany’s Chaos Computer Club claimed to have cracked the protection around Apple’s fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5S, just two days after the device went on sale worldwide. But the fact remains that the biometric function of the new iPhone has put the technology into everyday life for the next generation and the subsequent news that the manufacturer HTC is to follow suit may well begin a move to making biometrics a widely acknowledged security measure in the future, rather
than one that is sometimes considered specialised or too expensive. “At the end of the day all news is good news,” says Shaun Oaks. “This launch brings biometrics into the mainstream and reconfirms that the point that with biometrics you don’t need to remember a PIN or have an ID card or fob anymore. As people want to add extra layers of security to their technology, biometrics is the easiest way to do so.” As per usual when talking about biometric technology some of the media outlets started putting out stories that criminals would not only now be looking to steal the latest phone but also be cutting off one of the owner’s fingers as well. This is angle that Shaun Oaks has heard before. “I hear this kind of thing all of the time,” he says. “We still get asked about that aspect of biometrics today. So no matter how well you present the products and their functionality etc there will always be a ‘Hollywood’ element that needs dealing with. Whenever people ask me about this supposed breach of security, I ask what measures they are using at the moment. When they reply that they use a card I ask them what they would do if someone put a gun to their head and asked for their card. Using biometrics is no different, you just need to put I layers of security to match what it is that you want to secure. Nobody is going to be looking to chop off your finger in order to buy an app on your phone using your account!” It is a strange phenomenon with biometrics that some people still think about the potential loss of body parts that may ensue just because a scanner has been installed. This ‘Hollywood’ effect is indeed likely to have come about because of the inaccurate way that biometrics has been circumnavigated in movies and television. Even today in modern blockbusters biometric locks are regularly bypassed by the removal of a digit or an eye. This is clearly something that may haunt the

In the security sector, ease of installation and lower costs are likely to be what drives biometrics forward along with the ability to add it as part of a converged system
Authentication changes While the Apple and forthcoming HTC mobile phones are initially using biometrics as methods of security for online purchases, in the future this could lead to the units being used for other purposes in addition to making calls, surfing the Internet and using apps etc. NFC adapted phones have already been trialled and utilised in some applications and the feeling is, in some quarters that the addition of biometrics to the mix could spell the end of the use of tokens for access control. “HTC’s confirmation that the new Android One Max mobile phone includes fingerprint scanning technology as an authentication method represents the final death blow to hardware authentication tokens,” says Andy Kemshall of SecurEnvoy. “Fingerprint scanning effectively adds a third layer of security as it “locks” third party software token apps to the user, therefore further protecting that token device if it is stolen. “Despite this, we should welcome the additional protection from HTC as the brand’s influence suggests this level of security will no doubt become standard across all devices and will further secure the use of mobiles phones as authentication devices. Already SMS authentication through mobile phones is a secure and cost effective method for organisations creating new products, and has a 99.9 per cent reliability rate if passcodes are preloaded. Adding the additional layer of security will mean our mobile devices are even more likely to be chosen as the perfect token for authentication.” biometric system manufacturers for all time, however at the time of going to press we were still to hear of an iPhone user having a finger taken as well as his/her mobile. “As biometrics become more mainstream and people are more educated about the real life use of the technology then we certainly don’t get asked as much about this as we used to,” confirms Shaun. The number of markets that now utilise biometric security is still growing as the technology is no longer just a staple of the access control sector. Time and attendance, membership systems, vending machines and stock control are all processes that have taken biometrics on board. Plus, with the development of convergence in the security and FM sector, the technology fits in nicely with the overall process. “Companies are utilising biometrics for the guarantees and reassurances that it is known for, but also for the ease and cost reduction of easy installation,” says Shaun Oaks. “The speed and accuracy of biometric systems will continue to improve and as memory becomes cheaper and the processing power of the technology increases then biometrics will be constantly developing.” Fingerprint reading is still the most widespread biometric method despite the development of scanners for other parts of the body such as palm vein, iris and even whole hand systems. The ease of use and simple installation is key to the success of fingerprint readers in the market, along with the public acceptance of the technology. Not many of us have used an iris scanner and so its unfamiliarity could bring problems such as incorrect readings and hence hold ups. Other biometric methods will probably only be accepted widely by the market if they can offer something additional to the mix. So where next for the fingerprint scanner? Integrating biometrics into new markets such as
26
mobile phones will probably be shortly followed by tablet computers, especially as many laptops already feature readers. In the security sector ease of installation and lower costs are likely to be what drives it forward along with the ability to add biometrics as part of a converged system. “We have been keen to ensure that our systems integrate with all of the access control system manufacturers’ lines,” says Shaun Oaks. “In this way no matter which is your preferred supplier of access control you can add biometrics with a bolt-on from us. For example Paxton, Honeywell, Nortech and all of the major access control producers and Paxton even has the biometrics embedded into its software.” It is essential for the end-user that any converged system utilises one database for the whole installation, whenever installers have tried to mash systems together or attempted to run two databases in parallel that causes issues for the user. Developments such as this have enabled true convergence to really take off as opposed to the systems of the past which talked convergence but were still separate elements that did not work in tandem with each other. “R&D in biometrics is continual,” says Shaun Oaks. “We’re not only trying to meet customer demands but also open up new areas of opportunity for scanners and while some biometric companies are no longer with us or have been acquired there are still some great things being delivered by the modern systems and we’re looking to launch a number of new lines next year to keep going forward.” Since the launch of the new iPhone biometrics has had a new focus from the media and perhaps the perception of the next generation of installers will be influenced by the adoption of fingerprint readers by mobile phone manufacturers. Couple this with the increasing focus on convergence and the future looks good for biometrics.

STANDARDS
DO STANDARDS RESTRICT TECHNOLOGY? Monthly opinion from Adrian Mealing - Chairman BSIA Security Equipment Manufacturers Section echnology moves at an ever-increasing pace across a multitude of industries, and end users rightly have the expectation that their shiny new alarm system will interact with their mobile device. And many do. Before we get into the nuts and bolts about today’s issues, lets step back to the 90s; you’ll remember the first housesize mobile phones with batteries that needed their own trailer. The Internet as we know it gained a public face, and the fear of the Y2K bug spread from the US all across the world. During this time the concept of a pan-European suite of standards for security systems was born, the idea was a simple one, a suite of ENs to replace existing national standards, allowing manufacturers and installers to freely trade to the same requirements across the EU. As you will know from previous articles, we are not quite there yet BUT the original ethos was and still is correct. None of the standards that have been produced in Europe have restricted technology, on the contrary, the very nature of some of the requirements published in standards has driven development of technology that may not have been seen or used. The demands of industry stakeholders to provide credible systems that react how and when they should against real risks, has meant that the standards we use in the UK are being adopted across the globe. EN standards are written in such a way that they are technology independent; they have to be otherwise their worth becomes very short lived. The biggest problem still for our industry is the restriction placed on the professional installer by local or national standards, which are prescriptive in their wording and only allow, for example, certain methods of arming and disarming a system if you want a police response. The problem here is not the fact that it describes what you can do; the problem is it gives you no other options, or room for manoeuvre. Let’s go back to our end user with his new alarm system who has signed a maintenance and monitoring contract and has now been told he cannot use his phone with his alarm, he is going to ask why and not be happy with the answer. I am sure he will take more care of his phone than his keys and that nice little fob he now has on his keying. I am also sure his new smartphone is more technologically advanced than the keypad by his entry point. The app he wants to use requires a user name AND a password to allow him to do anything with his alarm, and yet the interpretation of the requirements that are in place is he cannot use it. To allow standards to be developed properly and to allow new technology to flourish, maybe the intruder sector needs to take a leaf out of the fire industry’s book, and allow the use of variations. Whilst some would argue that this is not the path to go down, surely it would allow installers to provide the end user with what they actually want. In next month’s column we asknews the question: “Who Cares about Next month Standards Update, about new standards and Standards?” work in progress.

PANEL
Adam Stroud – Paxton Group
Primarily, security installers should be concentrating on the expertise they already have but IT installers don’t have. They have the specialised information required for the fitting of security systems, whether its access control, fire alarms, intruder alarms or CCTV systems. Security installers already have information like which locks work on which doors, what fire door requirements are and how you ensure fail safe operation. These potential barriers to entry for IT installers are specialised skill areas for security installers and they should be focused on. It is absolutely prudent for security installers to train their staff to be able to offer IP security systems to customers. With the migration of security products to the IP platform, training is the key to securing their future in the developing market. Any resource and money invested into IP product training shouldn’t be viewed as just investing time and money into that product or system. If you have to spend a day learning how to install IP products it is actually a hugely transferable skill. Once you have mastered connecting a security system to an IP network, you can literally connect any device to an IP network. Some manufacturers are now making it much easier for installers to sit products on an IP network by utilising IPv6, which does away with a lot of the settings that were once required. This makes the process much easier, more accessible and less daunting; to security installers. Security installers should be ensuring that their sales team is up to speed with IP products. The sales team will most likely be talking to the IT department whilst quoting at a prospective site. They will need to be able to talk to the IT department in their own language, so companies should be making sure that their sales team know the benefits of IP products.
Clym Brown – Texecom When a rival product or service offering is made, the most likely victor will be the result that most closely matches the needs of the customer. In this case, when comparing the contrasting offerings from professional security installers and IT integrators, how will end users react to the different proposals on offer? One of the main reasons that IT integrators are increasingly offering security systems is because their customers are asking them to. Given that their customers are going to be Facilities Mangers and the like, the costs, risks and complexities of IT infrastructure projects far outweigh other low voltage appliances and systems that are likely to be required. It stands to reason, from a Facilities Managers point of view, to invest in a ‘one-stop-shop’ and have a single, trusted organization handling all low voltage systems

THE KEY TO COMPETING in a building. From the IT integrator’s point of view, adding electronic security services would appear to be an obvious extension to their portfolio of products and services. Security will be seen as less technically challenging than designing and commissioning IT systems. The increasing security industry migration to IP based systems is converging with IT technologies and expertise. The fact that most electronic security systems will require some form of IT integration anyway, in order to synchronise with building management systems or access networks for remote signalling (for example), will mean some interaction with electronic security, so why not offer the whole package? The rationale outlined above could easily be viewed as a threat by professional security installers. I would ask, is this really an opportunity? As we know, there is a lot more to electronic security than meets the eye, and there will continue to be a role for electronic security professionals. Given that, ultimately, lives and livelihoods depend on the performance and reliability of security systems; insurers will continue to require proof of adequate system design and reliability. This is where expertise in system design, product selection and proof of conformance will continue to be required. Changing industry standards, new technologies, police response requirements, ongoing system maintenance and audits, all add up to the continued role for electronic security experts. I see a future where the winners are the companies and individuals who embrace the opportunities that are available, and focus on delivering what the end user really wants. Rather than seeing IT integrators as the enemy, could they be partners? Should installers start marketing to IT integrators and collaborate? The best of both worlds would appear to be the closest thing that offers end users what they are looking for.
How should security installers react about the number of IT integrators now offering security systems? Is diversification essential for installers or should they continue to focus on what they know best?
Geoff Tate – SSAIB Currently, IP-addressable security equipment is primarily used in three areas of the market: surveillance technology, access control measures and intruder alarm systems. In the

CCTV sector, use of IP-addressable video cameras is becoming commonplace, while in regions such as Scandinavia security installers are notably more advanced in their use of IP-based techniques with alarms, for instance. Here in the UK, then, traditional security installers run the risk of being overtaken. This tangible threat is compounded by systems integrators’ use of security equipment as part of building management systems for larger ‘blue-chip’ and related projects. Of course, there are degrees of integration and it depends on your definition. For example, local area networks (LANs) can be used by integrators to provide a common communication path to security equipment, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, lifts and other operational building systems. This is also a potentially competitive threat in the years ahead, as the cost of the technology falls and integrators’ products are adopted more widely. ‘Systems’ integration is another issue and poses perhaps a bigger threat to traditional security systems providers as their role might be diminished. Using a common communication path, particularly a LAN, which might also include web access, is not without its risks when used in a security context. Web-enabled equipment is becoming more of an issue for tradition security systems installers as the technology becomes more prevalent and users’ expectations, regarding remotely accessing their system, increase. However, there is an upside for security installers. They shouldn’t be complacent, but equally needn’t feel threatened by all this. Knowledge is power and training in the use of IP addressable techniques is available both from manufacturers and generic training providers. Installers really do need to be computer literate; armed with these additional skills they can combine them with two other critical advantages they offer customers. Firstly, their specialist expertise in designing security systems (particularly intruder alarms) for sitespecific risks – something system/IT integrators might not do so well. Secondly, in offering 24-hour maintenance back-up on-the-ground to customers – another service integrators might struggle with by
comparison. Knowledge is also crucially important in terms of relevant standards and other industry regulations. One example of this is the new IEC international standards being introduced for CCTV and access control equipment. One final observation: IPaddressable equipment such as CCTV offers a range of marketable customer opportunities such as management control of equipment from their desktop computer or smartphone. IP alarm communication systems are also said to offer cost savings, plus the ability to interface with eg social care and visual verification systems. IT-literate installers, combining these services with their other skills and knowledge, can compete effectively with the integrators.
Greg Kulesza – IDIS Europe The landscape of the industry has been affected hugely by both the ubiquity of IP-enabled technology and the global recession. With a squeeze on end-user security budgets, traditional security install margins eroded and the reductions in revenues made it tough for installers wishing to up skill their service department or acquire new engineering skills. Training costs for Microsoft and Cisco certification have remained relatively high and many manufacturers have expected a similar, if not greater investment, for installers to reach the higher levels of partner accreditation in order to win business. Part of these accreditations is often requires a demonstration of these IT and network skills in the first place, just to qualify for the product training. The result is IT integrators realising a market ripe in opportunity and subsequently diversifying to take market share. IT skilled engineers can be charged out at higher rates with better margins, while the IT integrator can look to new recurring revenue streams through hosted systems, remote diagnostics and maintenance, logical security such as PIAM, etc. And it’s attractive business, some of these services lock the end-user even further in than traditional security maintenance models as mission critical security systems are hosted and managed by the third party integrator. It is telling that this year the Security Excellence Awards added integrator and cyber security to their category entries. This is all very “sexy” stuff but also highly complex and requires in-depth network expertise and IT skills and requires installers themselves to implement a sophisticated IT and network infrastructure in order to offer these types of services. With enough available resources and the right management team, we have seen security installers adapt to become a new style security integrator, but they are far and few between. And even then, often the change has been customerled through long-term partnerships requiring them to skill-up before embarking and then working on large and enterprise projects. An alternative to

reengineering is for installers to partner with the “coopetition” IT integrator, and possibly a data centre, which is a delicate balance and one that makes end users sceptical, and even then, the IT guys are those reaping the larger revenue stream and margin. It’s important to recognise, the demand for these types of services has predominantly been from the large enterprise customer with healthy budgets, which leaves huge other parts of the market up for grabs. So as a result, many installers have often stuck to what they know. We’re all aware that there is still a significant demand for analogue systems and so perhaps after being burnt by a foray into IP, installers have continued to retain and win new business through analogue. However, IP offers end users a level of flexibility and a raft of benefits simply not possible with analogue systems. Some installers focus on one or two IP manufacturers, but experience margin erosion through longer and more complex IP implementations while offering end users little product choice. So eventually, those installers continuing to recommend analogue are going to start losing more market share while those focussed on one expensive and slow to implement product are unlikely to see any positive growth.
Kim M Loy – Xtralis Security installers (alarm/small systems) have tried entering the higher end of the market (integration space) for years creating havoc due to lack of necessary skills for the more complex jobs. In response to this move, many integrators have taken on smaller projects to keep their pipeline full. All of these companies from small alarm system installers to integrators managing complex high security jobs for critical infrastructure are operating in the world of security and providing services to the customer base. The customers have always sought lower cost solutions and the security installers are quick to take on projects in the integration space by coming in with low bids. The key drivers in the industry right now are hosted and managed services driving higher RMR. There is room for everyone in the industry; however, it is important that at all levels the customer comes first and for the varying types of installation and integration companies to do the work they have the most experience and highest skill level to perform.
“System integration is predicted to grow, so installers need to embrace this change and understand the position they will adopt in a market of the future” 32
Julie Kenny – Pyronix Like all dynamic businesses, security installers need to be well aware of the threat that IT integrators pose to their business model. It is only through recognition of the threat being offered that security installers can exploit the opportunities. Comparisons with IT integrators can be drawn from what supermarkets have done in a number of market
sectors. At one time they only offered food to customers, but the power of being a captive audience for so many consumers and the behavioural data they held, led them to diversify into other sectors, such as fuel, banking, insurance, clothing and electrical goods. As a result of these changes the relevant market sectors have become more competitive, reducing both margin and revenue. Business that didn’t recognise this threat early enough may have struggled to survive or lost significant market share. Security installers may need to diversify, but either way they need to exploit the advantages they have. IT integrators possess the technology to integrate home automation, but they don’t understand security systems, installation and some of their customers security needs. System integration is predicted to grow, so installers need to embrace this change and understand the position they will adopt in a market of the future. Installers therefore need to make informed choices in how to adapt their business model. For example, do they partner with IT integrators and offer valuable insight and services? Should they diversify and offer a broader range of installation services in other areas of security or home automation? Change is inevitable, but it will also bring opportunities. Only dynamic installers will be positioned to take commercial advantage of this change by understanding the threats posed and making pro-active choices on behalf of their business.
Nigel Hackett – Optex For perimeter security and external intrusion detection systems, we see an increased demand for IP based integrated solutions. There is a clear request and requirement that all components of the security systems should not only talk to each other, but integrate at a deeper level. For instance in more complex and higher security projects, it is not good enough for a motion detection sensor to send an alarm signal to CCTV systems, it is now expected that the sensors should be supervised and configured by the VMS or PSIM system. I think the debate for both IT integrators and security installers is to identify the technology that they haven’t mastered yet, or do not have much experience of and be ready to invest time and effort to learn about it. Security installers who have a huge experience in putting alarms, physical security and CCTV systems together and designing systems for numerous different types of environments, need adapting and training on the transmission technology used, whether it is wireless or IP and the software ‘gluing’ all components together. The IT integrators that already have the network and software knowledge should be trained on the individual components of the security technologies, being perimeter intrusion detection, access control, CCTV etc

and how to design a system with those components to insure a multi-layered protection if they want to perform well in that market.
Tony Allen – Dycon It is important to quantify which areas of ‘security’ we are talking about and the impact of the advent of IT contractors into those areas. It is primarily access control and CCTV where the traditional security market has seen the arrival of IT integrators. The intruder alarm and fire alarm markets are more tightly regulated by standards, installation codes of practice and the requirements of police and fire authorities, all of which slows down new market entrants. EN50131 demands that a thorough risk assessment of the premises be carried out before the system is installed and many IT contractors do not have the necessary skills or desire to do this. In many cases where such systems are required, we have seen IT contractors team up with specialist approved installers to get around the risk assessment and certification issues. However, intruder system integrators have been adding ‘hooks’ into the panels to make integration with new technologies simpler and aid the partnership between traditional intruder alarm installers and IT contractors. Many alarm panels now can use CAT-5 cabling instead of traditional multicore cables, which means that the IT contractor can carry out a lot of physical intruder alarm installation and the alarm company only needs to physically install and set up the sensors and panel. So where does this leave the IT contractor wanting to install ‘security’? Actually, with the two fastest growing security areas that don’t have the same requirements, namely access control and CCTV. Traditional CCTV technology has been overtaken by advances in general video technologies and, apart from motion sensing and a few specialist applications, there is little difference between CCTV cameras and control and that used in a whole host of other non-security video uses. If you are installing cameras, and controls in a TV studio or theatre, is there any difference in fitting similar equipment for security uses?
Specialist video installation companies extensively use IT technology to control, transmit and store images and are often more experienced than a traditional security installer who only fits these occasionally. This is one reason why IT contractors can often provide CCTV installations at a competitive price. Access control is going along a similar path although here, one big advantage that a traditional installer has over IT contractors is in the specifying, installation and maintenance of door releases and locks. Often an IT contractor who can run and install IT cabling cannot cope with the multitude of locking requirements that doors need. An interesting ‘bridge’ technology has been the increasing use of PoE (power-over-the-ethernet) in IP based systems. Because IT contractors have been used to this technology in other fields they have stolen a march over traditional installers who are still wedded to the idea of fitting remote conventional power supply units around a system. PoE enables an installer to drive a wide variety of IP ready devices CCTV, access or intruder, using the same CAT-5 cable that the data travels along. No need to run a power feed, the CAT-5 cable once connected does it all. This often enables an IT contractor to quote a lower installation price as he has less cable and no remote power supply units to worry about, a perfect example of how IT technology can bring new ideas and technologies to traditional security markets. As security technologies develop and merge with other advances in electronics, the use of IT contractors will become more common in security system installation, but will that increase only be at the expense of the traditional installation sector? Traditional security companies will still be important as, particularly in the intruder and fire alarm sectors, system planning skills and on-going maintenance are crucial to the operation of any security system.
Traditional security installers should ask themselves a few questions.
• Does an IT contractor understand the complexities of the security environment? - Or do they just see money to be made from running IT cabling and installing standard equipment? • Will they able to do an adequate risk assessment

prior to installation? • Will they be able to provide a genuine 24hr service? • Do they understand the correct mix between alarm, access and CCTV? If the answers are mainly NO to the above then perhaps today’s electronic security installer needs to re-evaluate his business. • Could he gain from teaming up with an IT contractor? • Do his skills in system planning and system operation experience to complement the IT contractors existing and potential customer network? • Could he start a parallel IT contracting business to ensure that he benefits from advances in both sectors? The answer is probably keep on doing what you do best but maybe in association with those skilled in IT with a view to perhaps offering these services as they get more knowledgeable
Todd Rockoff – HDcctv Alliance IP is more than the future of surveillance, IP video is the present: Every security customer today expects to be able to view surveillance remotely on his iPhone, and IP video is the transport technology. The real question for the installer is: Where on the local site is most cost-effective for converting TV signals to Ethernet packet streams? IT specialists who use only IP cameras are at a competitive disadvantage to security installers who select the most appropriate solution in each case. IP cameras are well suited for some jobs, but they are generally less reliable and more costly overall than the alternatives. The market is migrating to HD, while the market has already embraced IP video. The most successful installers will continue to address customer needs with the most cost-effective solutions, drawing from all available technologies.

Putting myself in the shoes of a security surveillance systems installer/service dealer, whether or not I was feeling competitive pressure from IT integrators, I would be very busy adapting to the changing market as quickly as possible. First off, I would focus on IP hardware and software training, and acquire IP cameras, recording & control equipment, and video management software from reputable suppliers in the market - preferably from suppliers I already do business with. This process would be intensively hands-on, exploring mock-up bench tests that replicate the applications my core analogue customers now have, and that I am familiar with.
The next step would be to produce an assortment of selling and demonstration tools, including an online presence that helps me communicate efficiently with my existing customers and possible new ones. Within this material/content I would clearly be in a position to differentiate my diversified background, knowledge of analogue and IP systems, whilst highlighting my historical relationships, time honoured service levels and overall background in security surveillance installation and service. All of the above points will clearly reflect and contrast the differences between IT integrator appliance installation with associated tendency for overcharging, and my relationship/value based services. The first sales opportunities I would explore would be existing customers who profile along the lines of having existing analogue surveillance systems that are ripe for migration to IP network systems. This will allow my company to gain valuable experience, knowledge and develop a track record of happy customers.
Stefan Hay – FSA There really is no question – installers absolutely should look at diversifying. We work in a sector that is hugely influenced by advances in technology. Standing still cannot be an option. The last few years have seen a huge shift towards greater use of IP technology – one of the reasons why IT integrators are moving into the market – and the reality is that within the next few years, contracts calling for IPbased systems will be the norm, rather than simply a significant minority. If installers don’t step up to this challenge, they’re going to lose out. A business can only be successful if it delivers what its customers want. Make no mistake; we are going to see greater demand for IP systems. We are going to see more clients wanting to be able to control their systems from consumer technology such as iPads. We are going to see customers realise that recent advances can give them a far more flexible and effective approach to securing property. We must be able to respond to this, or we run the risk of being squeezed out of ‘our’ market by companies who are more prepared to adapt and take advantage of opportunities. Despite this, we are well equipped to respond. We have a vital advantage – experience. IT integrators simply won’t have the years of familiarity with working on security installations that we do. What we do better than anyone is design and install quality security systems. To keep up with advancing technology, we can link with manufacturers, boosting our knowledge and accessing training that enables us to capitalise on demand. Let’s make the most of what we have, add to our skills, and then there’s no reason why we can’t continue to stay successful in business.

“Our sector’s transition from wired to wireless has been at best - cautious and indicates that routine convergence has yet to earn its place within our everyday alarm systems”

(continued from page 34)
Simon Banks – CSL DualCom
The mobile phone represents true technological convergence. Providing most things you want from a pocket device with phone funtionality arguably its secondary use. In the very near future it will become a virtual wallet, paving the way to a sci-fi cashless society. When introduced, the mobile phone provided the very basics of telephony much like its landline ancestor. With more progress in the last fifteen years than the landline phone achieved in almost a century, mobile phones have evolved rapidly to become the single most important electronic device competing for our attention. With this idealism as a backdrop, it’s perhaps only natural for pundits to attach this magical fusion to everything else. From the empty promise of the intelligent fridge that automatically re-orders food as it’s consumed, to the television becoming my computer – where the reverse is more accurate. True convergence tends to occur by mistake and/or evolution but rarely prescriptively in the mass market. The last instance of a true consumer game–changer was the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad a couple of years later. In the late nineties we had MP3 files being exchanged in place of vinyl records but at the time nobody envisaged playing them on a phone! These were things we didn’t know we wanted, but they changed everything. A robustly independent alarm system arguably requires total autonomy from its infrastructural surroundings, questioning whether a professional alarm system can be hosted on a PC, phone or tablet. As value-add accessories, these devices have been complementing our alarm systems for some time, offering useful benefits to end-users and installers. If you lose your mobile phone, even for a moment, you’ve lost everything. The Security Industry and its many stakeholders are intolerant of ‘moments’. A genuine alarm activation could be lost in just a moment. With 75% of our alarm signalling still hosted by digital communicators, it’s not difficult to see why the security industry is criticised for its apparent lethargy for change. Competitors to the Digi have been around for over 25 years. In that time there has been a net gain in market share for ‘new’ signalling technology of just 35%. In contrast the UK’s mobile phone’s growth in the same period has increased by 1400% to 70 million, eclipsing the 30 million landlines in steady decline. Our sector’s transition from wired to wireless has been at best - cautious and indicates that routine convergence has yet to earn its place within our everyday alarm systems.
Steve Riley – RISCO Group
There is no doubt that IT integrators are moving more and more into the provision of the full end-to-end solution including integrated electronic security. We see this often at SI level around enterprise level systems. It follows that as IP networks and connectivity continue to expand that this approach from IT Integrators will continue into the mid-tier system level and beyond. Traditional installers will need to become more familiar with networks and IP in order to protect their business and meet their customers’ expectations. This needn’t be as daunting as it may initially appear to be - I’m confident that with a relatively small amount of training and self-learning that security installers can get to grips with these skills with ease. The onus falls on the security solution manufacturer to make systems that cross into the world of IP very simple to setup, and provide the appropriate training - this becomes even more important as the industry moves with companies such as us to a cloud hosted software and hardware as a service wrap.
Chris Carter Brennan – WebWayOne Adrian Mealing of Texecom recently wrote an excellent piece in PSI relating to standards and why it was important to embrace and adhere to them. In the alarm transmission service provider market there is an excellent business opportunity to deliver our industry a solution based on standards, this is why we don’t see the likes of Cisco etc putting forward an system for managed alarm transmission. The same can apply to the installation and maintenance market for security. By using standards to define system design, implementation, monitoring and maintenance installers can continue to carve out a healthy niche. With regard to installers branching out to IT services these installers will need to determine whether they have the resources, knowledge and man power to do so. The market for these services is already crowded and competitive. Installers should focus on understanding IT so that the premises management and monitoring systems they sell integrate easily to the IT structures of the end user, but adhere to the security industry standards. Additionally installers can start to understand and utilise new technology from manufacturers and alarm transmission service providers to deliver a better IT enabled solution. In summary, the security installation becomes an application installed with the IT infrastructure and delivers better information but securely to all stakeholders.

POWER
WINTER IS COMING ccording to a report by Reuters this month, Britain could see widespread power blackouts during next year’s winter if a series of unforeseen events such as a cold snap or unplanned station outages occurs simultaneously. This statement is based on a report for an advisory body to the prime minister. The engineering report for the Council for Science and Technology said that Britain’s power capacity margin, which is the production capacity available above demand levels, is expected to be dangerously low in the winter of 2014/15. Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem and network operator National Grid have also warned of shrinking margins and in response are creating tools aimed at reducing peak demand. As we already know the media jumped on the suggestion of power problems for 2015 earlier in June this year that “Britain could face a return to Seventies-style power rationing to prevent blackouts” (Daily Mail) and “The risk of power blackouts in Britain within 18 months” (Guardian). The news came amid warnings that the country may not be producing enough energy to keep the lights on by 2015. The reports even claimed that offices and factories could be ‘bribed’ to close for up to four hours a day during the winter to prevent households losing power. “Although the electricity supply is expected to be sufficient to cover predicted levels of demand, it is likely to stretch the system close to its limits, notably during the winter of 2014-15, increasing the chances of power outages,” the Royal Academy of Engineering said in a statement accompanying its report. Over the coming year, Britain faces further closures of coal- and oil-fired power plants to comply with pollution laws. Additionally, several operators of gas-fired power stations have taken plants offline because high gas prices created losses for older facilities. The report said the government should speed up its electricity market reform (EMR) programme, which foresees paying generators of standby capacity to keep plants running. “Government will set the market conditions but it is private industry that will invest the necessary money,” said John Roberts, chair of the study’s working group. “Most of the energy companies operating in this country are international organisations that will invest in the UK only if it proves to be an attractive market.” The EMR is expected to be passed into law next year. Businesses are particularly at risk when it comes to power losses. A sudden power failure
A

can have catastrophic consequences, draining vital man hours, missing potential customers and losing precious data and of considerable concern, a loss in security provision. For security systems the power supply is essential – not only does it prevent CCTV images from being recorded for example, but it also puts premises, staff and stock at risk. While intruder alarms are backed up with a rechargeable battery supply (usually built into the panel) other security measures, depending on the installation and location, aren’t always guaranteed power. The majority of British companies have done nothing to insulate themselves against a power cut. Securing the supply of power for security equipment is not simply a question of hiring a back-up generator; each company’s requirements vary according to the size of their facilities, the measures they have in place and the state of their installed equipment. Back-up requirements can vary considerably according to a company’s facilities. A facility which frequently suffers mains power outages represents a major threat and experts believe that firms operating in such conditions should make a back-up power solution a priority. Businesses should also consider their back-up power solution when they are planning to expand, because larger premises will often require more back-up power is required to maintain operations. It is also important to consider the age of a
As the nights begin to draw in yet again we hear tales of potential power losses and blackouts. Can the security industry be protected?

back-up solution. Equipment which lies unused over several years could prove incapable of handling a major power emergency. For this reason companies should regularly test equipment with a view to replacing generators between five and ten years old, depending on the amount of use and load conditions. Even if the equipment is new, it must be tested and serviced regularly to ensure it is up to the challenge of a power out. Leo Craig, sales manager, at Riello UPS agrees that the situation in the UK, with regards to generating capacity, is worrying: “When you have 4% spare capacity, one spike in demand may be all that is needed for the grid to start to fail. It could be as simple as everyone rushing to turn the kettle on at half time in a major football match.” Beyond this, Craig stresses that local issues can come into play: “A good example is power outages when cables are severed due to construction work.” Tony Allen of Dycon agrees that power is going to become a major issue in a few years’ time and that the less that we use the better off we will be. Tony explains that the switch mode power supplies which Dycon offers for security applications are more efficient than linear. He also underlines the fact that most of the Dycon models are equipped with standby power should the mains go down. “With switch mode you can get 85% of the power you take from the grid so, in a situation where capacity is constrained, you are using much less power for the same effect,” he says. On power continuity, Tony stresses that there are two basic reasons to have battery back-up on a power supply. The first, in his view, is if power is lost completely and the other is when there is a so-called ‘brown out’: “A ‘brown out’ will likely be the first thing that we will notice in this country if we start having power shortages. This is when the voltage drops down before it goes off. If you have a decent power supply as soon as the voltage 40
coming in is insufficient the battery will take over. Our power supplies are built to give a constant output down to about 165 volts AC, well below most ‘brown outs’. This is important if you have sensitive equipment to protect by maintaining a fixed voltage.” Hugh Devereux of Elmdene is a strong advocate of switch mode power. Figures supplied serve to underline the power efficiency benefits for a typical office, against the backdrop of the need to conserve energy and keep electricity costs under control. For an access control system with 60 magnetic locks (300 mA at 12v x 60), according to Hugh, the power requirement using switch mode units could amount to 240W. This, he estimates, is around 72W less than comparable linear models - a significant reduction. On the subject of power back-up for security systems, Hugh notes that the requirement in the UK, as referenced in PD6662, is that alarm systems are always backed-up: “Essentially, alarm systems at grade 2 require 12 hours of back-up while those at grade 3, and above, require 24 hours.” This is not however the case with other security elements like access control systems where there is no similar standard. With this in mind, Hugh recommends that business owners should really consider power back-up here too: “This is important to ensure that, should the worst happen and power drop out unexpectedly, the magnetic locks stay operational. Without a safety net there is the real prospect of unimpeded access to secure areas which criminals will be all too happy to take advantage of.” In terms of specific power solutions a launch from Elmdene is the UPS12-2000, a compact and cost effective in-line UPS, is designed to back-up 12 V dc devices, up to 10W (800mA), including CCTV cameras and door locks. So as the media begins its messages of doom for the winter ahead the message from the major back-up power providers is clearly that the heightened risk of power outages should serve as a real wake-up call for organisations who have not, as yet, put in place remedial measures to keep their operations up and running when the lights go out. In terms of keeping power to security equipment there are a number of options that installers can utilise for maintaining services.

BREWERY UPGRADES TO HD IP SURVEILLANCE he Rebellion Brewery is taking advantage of DirectIP network video recorders (NVRs) together with a range of two mega-pixel and weatherproof dome cameras utilising night vision capability to protect its merchandise and gift shop, brewing museum and production line producing over 70,000 pints of beer a day. The IDIS Mobile App allows the Rebellion management team to retrieve video footage and remotely live-view on mobile devices, while the push notification feature provides instant alerts to alarms and pre-set events on the move and out of hours. Commenting on the project, Tim Coombes, Coowner of The Rebellion Brewery, said: “The DirectIP solution fulfils every need the brewery had in terms of our safety and security requirements while providing all the benefits of HD and IP-enabled surveillance.” John Wust, Founding Director at Evolution Security, said: “With the installation and handover only taking a day, DirectIP has proven to be far less complex than other IP surveillance systems. IDIS has eliminated the hassle of configuring IP addresses and in doing so removed any chance of error.” www.idisglobal.com

a unified security solution for its new facility on San Francisco’s waterfront. The solution includes American Dynamics’ video management system, which provides security personnel with the ability to view, search and export video from VideoEdge NVRs as well as manage the museum’s network of Illustra IP mini-domes. The video platform also unifies access control operations from the museum’s C•CURE 9000 security and event management system, ensuring that museum security officials can centrally manage security operations of its new $220 million-dollar facility from one user interface. “Our new, expansive facility required a flexible and scaleable system that would allow us to easily manage our public exhibits and private areas during viewing hours and off hours, as well as bring on additional sub systems and sites in the future,” said Jennifer Fragomeni, Director of Facilities and Operations, Exploratorium. Spanning San Francisco’s Pier 15, the museum’s campus encompasses 330,000square-feet of indoor and outdoor space, along with a portion of Pier 17, which the Exploratorium also controls for behind-thescenes work. Working with its consultant, Security By Design, and systems integrator, Johnson Controls, the Exploratorium’s custom plan includes 75 access control panels and 100 card readers from Software House and approximately 150 American Dynamics cameras to protect staff, visitors and museum displays. www.tyco.com

Outdoor biometrics at airport Innometriks Rhino biometric readers featuring Lumidigm V-Series multispectral fingerprint sensors are being deployed across the entire Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) airport, controlling access to the tarmac with multiple units installed directly outdoors in the elements. Thousands of the airport employees are already enrolled and the system is handling tens of thousands of transactions per day. The Rhino readers are integrated with IntelliSoft software for template capture and card creation. “The Rhino reader facilitated a seamless transition to biometrics for BWI by providing the ability to continue to use HID iClass cards and PINs while they were enrolling employee fingerprints onto the smart cards,” John Cassise,
Innometriks CEO. “This mixed mode was very critical to the BWI security administrators.” Multispectral imaging was developed to overcome the fingerprint capture problems that conventional imaging systems have in less-thanideal conditions. This more effective technology is based on the use of multiple spectrums of light and advanced optical techniques to extract unique fingerprint characteristics from both the surface and subsurface of the skin. That subsurface capability is important because the fingerprint ridges seen on the surface of the finger have their foundation beneath the surface of the skin, in the capillary beds and other subdermal structures. “Being able to quickly read fingerprints in all types of conditions, from snow to rain to heat, and with a wide demographic ranging from pilots to ticketing agents, to drivers, to mechanics, the entire gamut of workers, was very important to BWI,” emphasises Bill Spence, Lumidigm Vice President of sales-North America, Europe and Australia. “With so many transactions occurring so frequently, BWI had to get great, clear images on the first try to be convenient, secure and meet operational efficiency objectives.” www.lumidigm.com

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Near-miss or near-hit? In October the British Transport Police released CCTV footage of a female cyclist almost getting hit by a speeding train on a level crossing in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire after she ignored safety measures and continued to attempt to cross the tracks. This store cam footage shows the moment an overloaded drinks aisle buckles and smashes on the ground in front of a hapless shelf stacker who has just stepped back to admire his work. The footage shows the booze-laden shelving beginning to buckle in the middle as a shopper makes a futile effort to hold back the falling booze. However, the shopper and a friend quickly step back as the bottles shatter at their feet, unleashing a multi-coloured wave of alcohol. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBPiaiRImcw
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Stop and drop Some days you just don’t feel like going to work and this delivery driver in the US is clearly having one of those moments; either that or she is the world’s laziest postal worker. ET on holiday in Cornwall Newsagent William Fathers joked that he thought the reflected light captured on his shop webcam was an alien descending on a Cornish bay in October. “It looks as if aliens are coming to Polperro harbour,” he said. “It happens at this time of year when the sun gets low in the sky. The light bounces off the sea and hits the camera. It's just one of those things but it does look weird.” At least in this case the camera owner recognises that he is not looking at an alien – unlike some of the previous stories we have featured… www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjumBwI7d5s
