Giving you more... In this edition of PSI you’ll notice that we’ve upped our game and increased the number of independent product reviews each month. Not only are we the only UK magazine bringing you product tests, but we’re carrying even more!

hen you have a Unique Selling Point (USP) in business it’s great to be able to improve upon it and develop it even more to set you further apart from the competition. You will have your own USPs that you bring up when you pitch for work and you might also be backed up by independent, third party approval so that the customer knows that they are dealing with a reliable provider. Here at PSI we have a few USPs in our locker. First off, as you know, we’re the only UK magazine that is mailed exclusively to security systems installers, we have our own established annual awards campaign, a golf day and we were the first security magazine to introduce a podcast a few years back. Another of our USPs is that we carry independent product reviews. You may not realise this, but for a trade magazine to carry product tests is a rare thing because so much revenue is dependent upon advertising. Cynical people think that advertisers will get favourable scores to keep them sweet however I can tell you that when it comes to PSI tests there is no such bias and manufacturers have no input at all in the tests (but that doesn’t mean they don’t try to). We carry out tests in partnership with independent third parties who don’t work for our company so that you know the results are genuine and unbiased. It also means that I, as well as the manufacturers, sit with crossed fingers every time a report comes in. You either do tests properly or you don’t bother - and the majority of trade magazines don’t bother. This month we step up our testing to three products a month plus we’ve extended our listing of prior tests to give you even more insight into what is reliable and recommended. Testing isn’t always plain sailing however. For example last month we looked at a system called Agate from Satel. During the test our reviewer came across a problem and we reported it so. However following further reviews this problem could not be recreated so we have now upped the final score of the product to 8.5 out of 10 (as you can see in the Tried & Tested section). If we are to be a trustworthy source of information we need to be sure reports are entirely correct and will amend scores when required. Because we put so much effort into our USPs you can be sure that, as the only source of independent product tests in the security market, we will strive to continue to give you the information you require in order to service your own USPs.
