Pro Bono Partnership I 25th Anniversary Gala
Twenty-five years ago, guided by a dual mission, Pro Bono Partnership was founded to provide meaningful pro bono opportunities for lawyers and access to free, expert legal help for nonprofits in Westchester County. What began as an idea with an ambitious goal has expanded to encompass assistance for 900 nonprofits each year in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, a model that has been replicated in several other regions, a robust educational program, a resource hotline for the nonprofit community, and support that allows more than 1,400 volunteer lawyers annually to give back to their communities.
The last two-and-a-half decades spent in collaboration with dedicated companies, firms, and individuals with shared values have resulted in empowered nonprofits with increased capacity, and neighborhoods that are stronger, better places to live and work. That is the power of pro bono, the proof what of our work together can accomplish, and what we are celebrating here tonight!
For this milestone anniversary, we are thrilled to honor two longtime supporters and program participants, IBM Corporation, and Skadden under the leadership of Executive Partner, Eric Friedman. These honorees embody what it means to be a Pro Bono Champion. Their contributions to the Partnership, the legal community, and to society as a whole, are exceptional and far reaching. We are also celebrating our 25th Anniversary Volunteers of the Year, who have each demonstrated their commitment to the Partnership and to our local nonprofits and communities with their inspirational and invaluable service.
As we envision our next 25 years, we remain focused on our more-relevant-than-ever mission and core purpose: providing volunteer lawyers impactful pro bono projects and nonprofits a solid legal foundation on which to build. We are proud of our legacy and of our small and mighty team who is passionate about our work and determined to make nonprofits and our communities stronger and more resilient each day.
Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate our history of impact and our promise of more to come.

ERIC J. EXECUTIVEFRIEDMANPARTNER
The belief that we all benefit when the legal system is accessible to everyone is central to Skadden’s culture.
The firm has been an enthusiastic supporter of Pro Bono Partnership for nearly two decades, and has collaborated with the Partnership to have tremendous impact on the tristate nonprofit community. Skadden Executive Partner, Eric Friedman, has been at the forefront of the firm’s pro bono program, and has focused on encouraging and enhancing the firm’s efforts to set a new standard for pro bono work.
With Mr. Friedman’s leadership and strategic vision, Skadden has dedicated more than two million hours to pro bono work in the last 10 years alone. Hundreds of the firm’s transactional lawyers have volunteered to work with the Partnership’s nonprofit clients during our decades-long relationship. They have addressed critical legal issues for over 100 different charities, advising on more than 130 matters. The Partnership has connected Skadden attorneys with nonprofits in need of tax advice, incorporation, contracts, bylaws, and more. Because of Skadden’s commitment to pro bono service, the Partnership’s nonprofit clients have their legal needs met, enabling those clients to focus their resources and efforts on their missions and programming.
The Partnership is proud to play a vital role in Skadden’s longstanding tradition of pro bono work and giving back to our communities. We are grateful for our partnership, and look forward to all we will be able to accomplish together in the next 25 years and beyond!
The Partnership’s 25th Anniversary Volunteers of the Year (VOTY25) award celebrates individual volunteers whose longtime commitment to the Partnership’s mission has played a pivotal role in helping create meaningful change in our communities for decades.
Our VOTY25 honorees stood out among an already amazing group of more than 4,000 Partnership volunteers. Learn more about our honorees, their inspiring work, and brief stories from some of the nonprofits that benefited from their expert counsel, on the pages that follow.

MARK BENEVENIA & VANCE CAMISA
SUSAN CORCORAN
Mark Benevenia, Executive Director and Managing Counsel Safety and Environmental Law, and Vance Camisa, Counsel, at Merck, have been the Partnership’s dynamic duo of volunteers for almost 20 years. Pairing up on most of their volunteer work with the Partnership, Mark and Vance have each worked on nearly 100 legal matters and have assisted 60 nonprofit clients throughout New Jersey. One nonprofit that has benefited from Mark and Vance’s expert counsel is Elevate to Even Plus Incorporated (Eleven+), a nonprofit dedicating to creating opportunities for underrepresented young adults to break the cycle of social and economic inequality. Andrew Walker, Founder and Chair of Eleven+, described Mark and Vance as “really easy to work with,” and quickly providing the tools necessary to resolve issues. In addition to appreciating their advice and demeanor, Andrew noted that the team was “really fast, and what they produced I could put to use immediately.” Christine Michelle Duffy, the Partnership’s New Jersey Program Director, said that Mark and Vance “have multiplied their impact on nonprofits through their combined expertise in real estate, contracts, health and safety, and compliance. Each brings years of experience in their respective fields, which overlap to give nonprofits a holistic view of their issues and possible solutions.” Mark and Vance’s work has made a difference to so many, and we are thankful for their steadfast support!
Susan Corcoran, an employment attorney at Jackson Lewis, P.C., has been volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership since our inception. For the last 25 years, Susan has been one of our most consistent volunteers, having assisted about 30 nonprofit clients with 64 matters. One of the many clients that benefited from Susan’s expertise is the YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester, a nonprofit with a mission to “eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” Susan worked with the YWCA on seven unique legal matters, including two sexual harassment prevention trainings for their staff. In addition to providing excellent individualized employment counsel to the Partnership’s nonprofit clients, Susan has conducted numerous HR workshops on behalf of the Partnership. Maurice Segall, the Partnership’s New York and Fairfield County Program Director, noted that “Susan has set the gold standard for volunteerism. Her incredibly active involvement with our program and our clients, her recruitment of so many other volunteers in her firm, her crucial employment law expertise, and her calming and reassuring demeanor have played an invaluable part of the success of our program.” We are so grateful for Susan’s dedication to the Partnership and to our nonprofit clients.

GEORGE N. NICHOLS
George Nichols, a retired employment attorney who most recently served as Director of Human Resources and General Counsel at the Ferguson Library in Stamford, CT, has been volunteering with the Partnership for the past 22 years. During this time, he has assisted 49 nonprofit clients with nearly 80 unique legal matters varying from reviewing employee handbooks to providing counsel on sensitive employment law issues. Maureen McIntyre, Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Area Agency on Aging, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their caregivers in the North Central Connecticut region, who worked with George on two legal matters, described George as a “breath of fresh air” who helped the nonprofit through “some really thorny matters that would have been very difficult had it not been for someone of George’s stature and experience.” Priya Morganstern, the Partnership’s Hartford Program Director, noted “I am always impressed by George’s wisdom, attention to the unique needs of our clients, clear and detailed communications, and patience with our clients. They love him! George is an extraordinary asset to our program.” It is a great honor to recognize George for his many years of hard work with the Partnership to help nonprofits build capacity.
Saluting the many companies, firms, and individuals that took the PBP25 Pledge to provide the Partnership’s nonprofit clients with 25 volunteer hours, 25 matters, or 25 volunteers in honor of our 25th anniversary. The dedication of our volunteers is always remarkable, and always a source of pride. It is even more so this year when volunteers stepped forward to ensure nonprofits had the expertise needed to navigate new requirements and never-before-seen circumstances. Thank you for taking the PBP25 Pledge!
