Thank you for your support of the Pro Bono Partnership mission, and for joining us to celebrate the power of pro bono! Through the power of your partnership—as a volunteer lawyer, a nonprofit client, a donor, or all of these—more than 900 nonprofits have been strengthened and empowered this year. These are organizations doing incredible work serving thousands of our neighbors in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, and making our communities better places to live and work. In our 24-year history, demand for the Partnership’s free direct legal services, resource hotline, and educational programming has never been greater. More nonprofit clients came to the Partnership for sound legal advice this year, and more than 1,400 volunteer attorneys and supporters rose to the challenge alongside our dedicated staff to help us contribute $19 million in free legal services to the nonprofit community! It is this partnership that provided hope in the most difficult times and bolstered our collective resolve. At this year’s virtual gala, we’re pleased to honor our 2021 Pro Bono Champions, Bruce C. Bennett, Partner at Covington & Burling, LLP, and the UnitedHealth Group Law Department. The benefit these Champions have provided to the legal community, and to society as a whole, is truly exceptional. We have also added a Pandemic Response Award to our program in recognition of the unique challenges our volunteers helped nonprofits navigate this year. Additionally, we will celebrate our Volunteers of the Year who have demonstrated their commitment to the Partnership and the nonprofit community with their dedication and service. You can learn more about all of these inspiring individuals, their work, and some of our clients who have benefited from their service in the pages that follow. This is the power of partnership, and partnership makes us stronger. We are grateful for your continued support. With appreciation,
Jonathan Mothner Nancy Eberhardt EVP, General Counsel & Secretary, Executive Director Synchrony Financial Board Chair, Pro Bono Partnership

UNITEDHEALTH GROUP LAW DEPARTMENT Honoree UnitedHealth Group employees fulfill the company’s mission of helping people live healthier lives and helping make the health system work better for everyone. The company’s Legal, Compliance & Regulatory Affairs (LCRA) Department is responsible for the delivery of legal services, compliance, and regulatory affairs support to all parts of UnitedHealthcare and Optum businesses, which together form UnitedHealth Group, providing professional legal services to over 330,000 employees worldwide. With a focus on positively impacting society woven into the culture at UnitedHealth Group, LCRA team members live the company’s values, aligning efforts and activities to deliver on commitments to members, customers, providers, and business partners. UnitedHealth Group’s relationship with the Partnership is an example of their work in action, which spans thirteen years and more than 100 matters for 71 nonprofits throughout our tristate area. LCRA team members have provided the Partnership’s clients with guidance on regulatory compliance, employment matters, contracts, and other corporate legal issues. One area that has particularly benefited nonprofits is their deep expertise in data privacy and security law. UnitedHealth Group’s core values of integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation and performance are demonstrated in every project their attorneys, paralegals, regulatory compliance and administrative professionals perform on behalf of the Partnership’s clients. Pro Bono Partnership is proud to recognize the UnitedHealth Group Law Department for its ongoing commitment to pro bono work and to building healthier communities by strengthening the nonprofit sector.
PANDEMIC RESPONSE AWARD Demand for Pro Bono Partnership’s services drastically increased due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Partnership was able to help so many nonprofit clients navigate the ever-changing regulations caused by the global health crisis because of the support and volunteer efforts of our partner law firms, in-house legal teams, and individual practitioners who stepped up to fill the need. In particular, the Partnership is proud to honor three outstanding partners with our Pandemic Response Award.
PANDEMIC RESPONSE AWARD HONOREES
Dechert & Lowenstein Sandler LLP During the economic upheaval caused by the Pandemic, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and Shuttered Venue Operators (SVO) grants provided much-needed economic relief to the nonprofit community. Pro Bono Partnership collaborated with the law firms Dechert LLP and Lowenstein Sandler LLP so that its nonprofit clients did not have to navigate the complicated application process alone. Because of this team of expert volunteers dedicated to this particular service, the Partnership was able to provide assistance to its nonprofit clients in applying for first- or second-draw PPP loans and SVO grants. Volunteer lawyers offered a wide-range of advice: understanding the terms of the programs and whether the nonprofit qualified, determining the loan or grant amount the nonprofit was entitled to request, understanding the application forms and forgiveness terms of the loans, and even identifying participating lenders for PPP loans. Thanks to Dechert LLP and Lowenstein Sandler LLP volunteers, the Partnership was able to handle more than 100 matters for its nonprofit clients! For many of these organizations this assistance made all the difference. The Partnership is grateful for the longstanding support of the Dechert and Lowenstein Sandler firms, and its dedicated volunteers who helped so many through their work.
Matthew T. Miklave Matthew Miklave, Founder of The Law Office of Matthew T. Miklave PLLC, began volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership in 2017. Matt increased his pro bono efforts during the pandemic, when our clients needed legal guidance more than ever. Matt truly stepped up to the plate and assisted on more than a dozen Covid-19specific projects, including conducting seven webinars focused on helping the nonprofit community navigate complex and constantly-changing pandemic restrictions. Early in the pandemic, Eric Dillner, the CEO of Shoreline Arts Alliance and Founder and Chair of the Task Force to Reopen CT Arts Venues: Science Based Safety, came to the Partnership seeking a volunteer to present a webinar addressing legal issues that arts venues were facing. Matt did not hesitate when asked to assist on this matter. Eric commented that “Matt Miklave is an extraordinary guy who gets the arts… We are so thankful to Matt Miklave and of course to Pro Bono Partnership for making this impactful connection. What a tremendous gift you have given the arts community at large.” Pro Bono Partnership is thrilled to recognize Matt for his unwavering support throughout the pandemic.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Each year the Volunteers of the Year (VOTY) awards are a source of hope and inspiration, and during this time of unimaginable challenges, that message is more important than ever. The Partnership recruits and supports more than 1,400 volunteer lawyers annually, and we could not fulfill our mission without their help. Because so many attorneys continued to volunteer, and even stepped up their efforts this past year, the Partnership was able to serve 900+ nonprofit clients during a tumultuous and rapidly changing time. Our six Volunteers of the Year stood out among this already amazing group, and have demonstrated the power of pro bono at work in our communities. You can learn more about them on the pages that follow, as well as brief stories from some of the nonprofits that benefitted from their expert counsel at critical junctures. Please join me in thanking and celebrating our VOTY honorees. They have made it possible for our nonprofit clients to serve more constituents, enhance programming, and make our neighborhoods better places to live and work. Their work has made our nonprofit community stronger, more resilient, and more sustainable, and we are grateful for their dedication. Congratulations, VOTY honorees!
Lauren R. Fishman, Esq. Pro Bono Manager
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR VOTY SPONSOR
JOHN C. CORBETT
John Corbett, Senior Associate General Counsel at IngenioRx, is an experienced transactional business lawyer who has consistently provided expert contract guidance and assistance to Partnership clients since 2015. KinderSmile Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit that provides dental services and oral health education for low-income children, pregnant women, and new mothers in New Jersey, is just one of 20 nonprofit clients that has benefited from John’s counsel. When KinderSmile asked Pro Bono Partnership for assistance with a corporate policy matter and a contract review, John graciously agreed to take both projects. John also provided much-needed guidance to our nonprofit clients during the pandemic, many of whom had contracts that needed to be renegotiated. One such client needed to renegotiate its contract to host a conference at a hotel. After the project was completed and the hotel accepted all of the proposed changes, the organization’s COO said “John did a tremendous job… He’s been a dream to work with, and I hope we get to connect again on future projects.” It is our honor to recognize John for his work helping nonprofits in our community.
MELVINA FLAHERTY & F. SCOTT WILSON
Melvina Flaherty and F. Scott Wilson, Principal at Uplands Consulting LLC, our Connecticut based “dream team,” have been jointly assisting Partnership clients for years. Together, they have worked on 30 matters ranging from drafting contracts and waivers to helping nonprofits file for incorporation and tax exemption. Mel and Scott’s dedication to their pro bono work enables them to develop strong connections with all of the nonprofits that they assist, and nonprofit Judy Dworin Performance Project is no exception. Over the years, Mel and Scott have provided Judy Dworin Performance Project, an arts nonprofit that harnesses creative expression as a catalyst for positive change, legal guidance on four unique legal matters. Executive and Artistic Director Judy Dworin noted that “No words can express our appreciation for [Mel and Scott’s] expert legal advice, but also the huge gestures of humanity and generosity that they have shown to us through the years.” Mel and Scott have gone above and beyond volunteer expectations in their work with Judy Dworin Performance Project, particularly during the pandemic, always checking in and willing to assist. In the words of Pro Bono Partnership’s Connecticut Program Director, Priya Morganstern, “Mel and Scott are awesome. I frequently refer to them as the Dynamic Duo! They are always game for a new challenge and are not afraid to work on more than one project at a time. They are a huge asset to the Partnership and I am so grateful for their commitment, professionalism, and perspective.”
MANALI JOGLEKAR
Manali Joglekar, Counsel at Lowenstein Sandler, has been one of our most reliable volunteers since she began working with Pro Bono Partnership in 2012. Manali has provided legal guidance to 27 nonprofit clients on a variety of matters, including structuring online programs, developing websites policies, and negotiating licensing agreements and other contracts. Manali has earned a reputation as one of our go-to privacy policy and website review volunteers. Recently, Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship Corp. (WCEC), a nonprofit that provides the tools for women from all economic levels to become self-sufficient by owning and successfully operating small businesses, contacted Pro Bono Partnership seeking review of a contract for a fundraising program. Rana Shanawani, Executive Director of WCEC, recalls receiving the original document and being “absolutely dizzied” by its length and complexity. Rana credits Manali, and the other Lowenstein volunteers who assisted, with allowing WCEC to understand the contract and continue their relationship with an important fundraising partner. Manali’s work with WCEC, and numerous other nonprofits, has made a difference to so many.
ALEXANDRA LAPES
Alexandra Lapes, an associate Levy Employment Law LLC, began volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership in 2018, soon after she became a practicing attorney. Alexandra’s willingness to jump in made her quickly rise to the top of our list of most prolific employment attorneys, having worked on 10 matters in only a few years. As a newly admitted attorney, Alexandra’s work with Pro Bono Partnership allowed her to gain hands-on experience, to take the lead on projects, and to build relationships with nonprofit clients. Alexandra described her work with Partnership client Voices Center for Resilience as “especially meaningful” because of its important mission. She noted that “During the pandemic crisis, being able to offer my legal services to help an organization whose mission was derived from the tragedy of September 11th and now has evolved more broadly to help all families impacted by tragedy, including their initiatives during the recent pandemic, seems timelier than ever. I truly appreciate that experience.” Voices Center for Resilience, Pro Bono Partnership, and Alexandra’s other grateful nonprofit clients appreciate her hard work and commitment to giving back.
TRACEY I. LEVY
Tracey Levy, Founding Member of Levy Employment Law LLC, has been an invaluable asset to Pro Bono Partnership clients since she began volunteering in 2014. Tracey’s willingness to advise on employee handbook reviews in particular, has been extremely helpful since these projects tend to be lengthy and are challenging to place with volunteers. Tracey has applied her expertise to 24 employment matters for 18 nonprofit clients. Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope, is one of the nonprofits that has benefited from Tracey’s guidance. Karraine Moody, CEO of Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity described Tracey as a “patient” and “thorough” advocate who ensured that “our employees are well covered and that we are being the best employer possible.” Asked about her pro bono work, Tracey said “My singular goal as an attorney is to help people… What I love most is when I am able to take my specialized skills as an attorney and use them to give back to the community.” We are grateful for Tracey’s dedication to pro bono work and to our nonprofit clients.
