Siamo alla 3ª edizione della Milano Jewelry Week: è cambiato qualcosa del concept iniziale? «No, la nostra volontà sin dall’inizio è stata quella di dare a Milano una manifestazione che potesse coinvolgere sia gli addetti del settore che i semplici appassionati, che potesse dare a tutti la possibilità di visitare gli eventi ed entrare in boutique o show room dove normalmente il visitatore comune non può accedere»

We are now in the 3rd edition of Milano Jewelry Week. Has anything changed from the initial concept? "No, our objective from the outset was to create a manifestation in Milan that would engage both industry professionals and enthusiasts. We aimed to provide everyone with the opportunity to explore various events and access boutiques or showrooms that are typically off-limits to the regular visitor." What can people, whether they're passionate about jewelry, working in the industry, or just plain curious, expect to find? "The Milano Jewelry Week includes a wide range of offerings which encompass everything from jewelry displays for trying on and direct purchases from manufacturers, live demonstrations where artisans reveal their jewelry-making techniques, workshops designed to educate visitors about the design and production processes, and a variety of informative talks covering topics like diamonds, investment jewelry, vintage, Made in Italy, and other pressing industry issues.”

Cosa può trovare non solo l’appassionato o l’operatore di settore, ma il semplice curioso? «Si va dalle esposizioni di gioielli, da provare e acquistare parlando col produttore, a live performance dove l’artigiano mostra come è stato realizzato il gioiello, a workshop che insegnano, anche ai visitatori, i processi di progettazione e realizzazione. Ci saranno numerosi talk di approfondimento, dove si parlerà di diamanti, di gioielli da investimento, del vintage, del Made in Italy e di altre tematiche attuali del settore»

What is the current landscape of the education and training sector for young talent in the industry? "We've faced challenging years with school closures and a decline in the interest of young individuals pursuing a career in the jewelry industry. However, in recent years, there has been a counter-trend. The Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana and the Galdus School have initiated courses in collaboration with prominent jewelry companies. On the industry side, there's a substantial demand for skilled professionals, and schools are now tailoring their training programs to meet these demands. In fact, nearly 99 percent of young graduates find employment in the field."

Qual è oggi il panorama del mondo della formazione per i giovani talenti? «Abbiamo avuto anni difficili, con scuole che hanno chiuso e un forte calo di giovani interessati al settore. Negli ultimi anni c’è una controtendenza. La Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana ha attivato un corso in collaborazione con una grossa azienda di gioielli, così come ha fatto la Scuola Galdus. Dal lato delle aziende c’è molta domanda, le scuole formano su richiesta e il 99 % dei ragazzi viene assunto»

Serena Scandolo Qual è lo stato del comparto dell’oreficeria in Italia? «Il settore sta godendo di un momento positivo. I dati relativi al primo semestre 2023 mostrano un aumento del 10,2% rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2022. Come CNA Federmoda, di recente abbiamo partecipato a diverse manifestazioni internazionali e abbiamo registrato un forte interesse da parte dei mercati esteri, in particolar modo degli Emirati Arabi» Milano con la sua Fashion Week è capitale italiana della moda. Quali sono gli obiettivi della Jewelry Week? «Credo che moda e gioielleria siano comparti molto connessi tra loro. La cosa interessante di questo evento – che non vuole contrapporsi a manifestazioni di settore come Vicenzaoro o Oroarezzo - è che è una “week”: un’iniziativa diffusa nella città, con tanti momenti diversi, dalla serata di premiazione, ai vernissage, ai talk»

La gioielleria fra tradizione artigianale e innovazione. Crede che l’Intelligenza artificiale possa avere un ruolo nelle creazioni? «Credo che il connubio fra tradizione e intelligenza artificiale sia inevitabile in tutto ciò che è il comparto moda, ma vanno preservate le capacità e le competenze del saper fare, per non rischiare di perderle. Nel mondo del lusso il prodotto di qualità, la componente artigiana, il fatto a mano avranno sempre un grande valore. Poi c’è un ragionamento legato alla digitalizzazione, per l’aumento delle produttività e delle performance. Dobbiamo trovare la maniera per farli convivere, mantenendo la valenza della tradizione artigiana e del Made in Italy»

Data for the first half of 2023 indicates a growth of 10.2 percent compared to the same period in 2022. As CNA Federmoda, we have recently participated in various international events and observed substantial interest from foreign markets, notably the Arab Emirates." Milan, renowned for its Fashion Week, is Italy's fashion capital. What are the objectives of Jewelry Week? "I believe that fashion and jewelry are closely interlinked domains. What makes this event unique, without intending to compete with

industry events like Vicenzaoro or Oroarezzo, is its format as a 'week.' It encompasses a series of diverse moments, from awards evenings to vernissages and discussions, which are spread throughout the city, enhancing the overall experience." Jewelry exists at the crossroads of traditional craftsmanship and innovation. Can artificial intelligence play a role in the creative process? "I believe that the convergence of tradition and artificial intelligence is an inevitable progression within the fashion industry. However, it's imperative to preserve the skills and expertise inherent in savoir-faire to avoid their potential loss. In the luxury realm, the value of high-quality, artisan-crafted, and handmade products will always endure. Additionally, considerations related to digitalization can boost productivity and performance. Our challenge is to find ways to harmonize these elements, maintaining the intrinsic value of Italy's craft tradition."

"I believe that the entire MJW experience offers a significant opportunity, especially for those new to the world of jewelry. It allows them to discover artistic talents and deepen their understanding of this world through active participation in exhibitions, shows, talks, and panels featuring prominent guests." The jewelry world's trend for the 23/24 season: more innovation or a return to tradition? "In today's context, the winning strategy is to harmoniously blend these two elements. There is a growing desire for an understanding of traditions from the past, which is why we are witnessing the trend I refer to as 'Rock The Roots.' This entails reinterpreting traditional techniques, such as cameo and Micromosaic, while infusing them with innovation. This fusion of tradition and innovation is a fundamental value that keeps us continually moving forward."

La tendenza del mondo del jewel per la stagione 23/24: più innovazione o richiamo alla tradizione? «Al giorno d’oggi la chiave vincente è combinare questi due elementi. C’è un desiderio sempre più diffuso di conoscenza delle tradizioni del passato, per questo assistiamo al trend che definisco “Rock The Roots”, ovvero la reinterpretazione di tecniche appartenenti alla tradizione, come il cameo e il Micromosaico, unite all’innovazione: un valore fondamentale che permette di essere sempre proiettati al futuro» Un consiglio per individuare un modo “inusuale” di indossare un gioiello? «Credo che non esista un unico modo di indossare qualsiasi gioiello. I gioielli sono prima di tutto espressione della propria personalità. Una delle spille della mia collezione personale ritrae un gatto dormiente e spesso mi piace indossarla sopra la spalla, come se mi accompagnasse ancora più da vicino. Indosso spille sopra i bottoni delle camicie o attaccandole a colletti e polsini. Il consiglio è quello di non avere paura di esprimersi attraverso il gioiello»

Any advice for finding an "unusual" way to wear a piece of jewelry? "I firmly believe that there is no single 'correct' way to wear jewelry. Jewelry is, first and foremost, an expression of one's personality. For instance, I have a brooch in my personal collection that depicts a sleeping cat. I often enjoy wearing it over my shoulder, as if it's accompanying me even more closely. I also wear brooches over shirt buttons, attaching them to collars and cuffs. The key advice is for individuals not to hesitate in expressing themselves through their choice of jewelry.
