Co-production strategies bear new fruit

International co-productions are as present as ever, and many of the fruit of these strategies are evident at Mipcom

Telemundo Internacional, for instance, is featuring two products resulting from international co-production: Dulce amargo, a co-production with Televen of Venezuela and Cadenatres of Mexico, and Rosa diamante, a co-production with Argos of Mexico. The first one was shot in Venezuela and the latter in Mexico. Additionally, Telemundo Internacional is co-producing Fina estampa with Globo TV of Brazil, company with which it also produced El clon, the commercial megahit that reached over 50 countries. Caracol Televisión, which last year created a division dedicated to co-productions, recently launched its first project with Cadenatres of

Mexico: La ruta blanca. The 80-episode series deals with the theme of drug trafficking and features the Colombian jungle, and the cities of Bogota, Mexico City and Miami as its main backdrops. Additionally, Caracol will continue to produce with Sony Pictures Television (SPT), with which already did Amar y temer. The company also expects to announce later this year a new co-production in Spain. SPT is very active in co-producing with Latin American companies. It currently holds co-production agreements with RCN of Colombia and with Televisa de Mexico. Additionally, it recently launched a joint project with Cadenatres of Mexico, El sexo débil.

RTI Colombia, with half a century in the international telenovela market, closed two partnerships: one three-year deal with RCN of Colombia and the other with Televisa of Mexico through 2019. Both deals involve several hours of programming. The partnership with Televisa contemplates the production of over 500 yearly hours from Venezuela and Colombia. “Venezuela is an important market with production resources and I believe there is a re-birth of the television industry there. Several companies are starting to produce in Venezuela and Televisa chose RTI to break ground there,” said Patricio Wills, President of RTI.

Televisa has been successful with its co-productions. In fact, many of its last teen products have been joint ventures. The company has been applying a co-production strategy geared towards conquering markets where canned content doesn’t do well. The partnership between Venevision Productions and Univision Studios continues to produce hits. Rosario, the new series launched this Mipcom, is the third co-production after Eva Luna and El talismán. Caracol Televisión, synonymous with humor and action stories

Action, reality and intrigue on one end and humor on the other, are the genres that define Caracol Televisión. The company arrives at this Mipcom with new products on both categories

Caracol Televisión is pioneer in the production of action series with realistic and powerful stories. It started with Sin tetas no hay paraíso, followed by titles such as El cartel, El cartel 2, Las muñecas de la mafia, and this year La promesa, Pablo Escobar and Made in Cartagena. “Clients have a lot of faith in the new series Caracol is bringing to the market,” said to PRODU Lisette Osorio, Senior International Director of Caracol Televisión. In fact, Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal and La promesa are the series that have contributed the most to significantly boosting sales in the first two quarters for the distributor.

Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal, has yielded great results, not just in Colombia, but also internationally, helping boost sales in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. La promesa has also sold exceptionally well despite not having aired in Colombia yet. Some of the buyers include Televisa, which is programming it on one of its pay-TV channels, but also will air it on free-TV. “Free-TV demands more content and more telenovelas, and it’s our natural audience, but this type of action series has more demand on cable,” said Osorio.

La promesa, excellent sales for first half of the year

Made in Cartagena, another title being introduced this Mipcom, follows the same action style, but makes a bit more emphasis in romance. The story, set in the colonial Colombian city of Cartagena, revolves around a young dancer unknowingly manipulated by her uncle to infiltrate the life of the only person who knows the hiding place of the Santa Helena treasure.

H umor Caracol is also known, –Colombian production always have been– for its telenovelas featuring humor. ¿Dónde diablos está Umaña? and Cinco viudas sueltas (premiering this Mipcom), are recent examples of productions in this genre.

It is also worth noting that El secretario, another Caracol Televisión telenovela featuring humor, has been acquired by Televisa. It is being adapted under the title Porque el amor manda, and will star Fernando Colunga and Blanca Soto. “Clients seek our action and humor series,” said Osorio. “Our team is proud to sell these products and see how much we’ve grown. The effort has paid off,” she added. MT

Graduados, the Argentinean megahit takes on the world Graduados is one of the greatest success stories in Argentinean television in 2012. The telenovela was part of the Telefe strategy to strengthen its primetime, goal it achieved by a large margin. It even beat ShowMatch, a highly rated program from its main competitor, El Trece

The family and romantic comedy, co-produced by Telefe, Endemol and Undergound, and distributed worldwide by Telefe International, is already undergoing production for its versions in Mexico (TV Azteca), and Chile (Chilevisión). Additionally its canned version has already been sold in several Latin American countries. The original version stars Nancy Dupláa and Daniel Hendler and tells the story of a group of high school graduates that fortuitously meets again after 20 years. The first episodes take place in the 80’s, which required extended production time. The sitcom premiered with 10 episodes in the

can and it’s keeping a production pace of four episodes per week.

Graduados premiered on March 12th in the primetime (9:15pm) of Telefe in Argentina, and was well received by the audience: an average 24.4 rating points, peaking at 30, and a 48% share. These results made it the most seen show that day and time block. The series, which will air through the end of the year, has maintained its numbers with an average share of 46%, making it Argentinean television’s most watched fiction. Graduados is “a wonderful comedy from Underground that worked extremely well since day one, and helped boost the performance of the other series we programmed around it with such as, Minuto para ganar, La dueña, Perdidos en la tribu, and Gracias por venir and Todo es posible on the weekends. We created a program that is coherent, family oriented and exclusive, and in general, one that tries to offer a positive message,” said Tomás Yankelevich, Director of Programming and Production Telefe.

Pablo Cullel, Director of Production and Contents of Underground, added: “We’re never too concerned with the competition, but we knew we had the responsibility to bring a strong offer to prime time. We took into account everything that could appeal to our viewers and the show exceeded all expectations. It’s a fun show with lovable characters with whom the public could easily relate. Our team works closely together on this production. We really enjoy making Graduados.” Cullel also announced Underground is already working on a new series for next year. MT

Telemundo restarts production in Mexico with Rosa diamante Rosa diamante is one of the main products Telemundo Internacional will feature at this Mipcom. Martha Godoy, VP of Production of the telenovela, revealed to PRODU some of the details of this Telemundo Studios and Argos Televisión co-production Marha Godoy

Rosa diamante is a product that posed an important challenge: “Restarting production in Mexico and re-establishing the relationship between Argos and Telemundo, which we were able to accomplish thanks to the professionalism of both companies,” said producer Martha Godoy, whose resume also includes Telemundo novelas ¿Dónde está Elisa?, Pecados ajenos, and Tierra de pasiones. The telenovela is an adaptation of the Argentinean novel Perla negra. This new version of the story features most of the original plot, but, especially on the second half, it turns into a more contemporary and realistic tale.

The story begins in the Mexican town of San Miguel de Allende. Godoy explains the choice: “We were looking for a town that met certain criteria of the story, such as proximity to the capital, but it also needed to have the charm and beauty of Mexico’s magical towns. San Miguel de Allende was declared World Heritage Site by Unesco due to its architectural and cultural contributions to the Mexican baroque, and also due to the role the town played in Mexico’s independence movement.

Televisa’s new projects: Amores verdaderos and Qué bonito amor Televisa will close 2012 with two new big productions: Amores verdaderos, the telenovela being introduced this Mipcom produced by Nicandro Díaz, and Qué bonito amor, from producer Salvador Mejía

One of the most recent projects Televisa is bringing to the screen is Amores verdaderos. Produced by Nicandro Díaz, it is a Mexican adaptation of Amor en custodia, the original work by Marcela Citterio and Enrique Estevanez. “It is a complex adaptation where we try to infuse Mexican flavor with the Televisa style. Writer Kary Fajer was inspired by this contemporary story from Argentina, and we feel it is a good fit. It has a universal theme that is easily relatable with the current situation in Mexico, because it deals with personal safety, and we tried to portray it through two bodyguards who fall in love with their respective clients,” said Díaz to PRODU.

The producer believes the story appeals not just to viewers but also advertisers, who signed on prior to the telenovela’s premiere. “We offer product integration and the number of companies that have come on board has exceeded our expectations. We’ve had several sponsors from the first episode and the series was even already sold in Spain, which we did not anticipate either. Typically this happens after the product has been on air and shown good results,” added Díaz. Producer Salvador Mejía chose the Colombian story La hija del mariachi to be adapted for the Mexican market under the title Qué bonito amor. The script is inspired by the music of José Alfredo Jiménez and seeks to restore the image of mariachis for the new generations. “It is a difficult script because it’s very Colombian, it is a great love

story featuring a great icon. Adapting it to Mexico has been challenging, where the biggest appeal is the use of Mexican songs. That is what makes this product so innovative, because it gives us the opportunity to portray the mariachi as the Latino and Mexican voice that sings to love,” said Mejía. Qué bonito amor is shot on location in Mexico City’s Plaza Garibaldi, Guadalajara, Chicago and Los Angeles, with the support of Univision Network.
