CROESO WELCOME ...AC YMLACIWCH!

...AND RELAX!

Mae amser yn hedfan pan fyddwch yn cael hwyl medda’ nhw, ac yn sicr mae’r flwyddyn academaidd hon wedi hedfan. Mae’r myfyrwyr blwyddyn gyntaf a groesawyd gennym i Brifysgol Bangor fis Medi diwethaf yn sicr wedi heneiddio, ond tybiaf y bydd prosiectau heriol, terfynau amser, morol am eich hunain a nosweithiau allan yn Cube yn gwneud hynny i berson (heb sôn am y cyfarfodydd cinio yn ‘spoons!)

Time flies when you’re having fun they say, and this academic year certainly seems to have flown by. The first-year students we welcomed to Bangor University last September have certainly lost their fresh-faced appearance, but I suppose that challenging projects, deadlines, fending for yourself and nights out in Cube will do that to a person (not to mention the working lunch meetings at ‘spoons!)

Datblygodd myfyrwyr yr ail flwyddyn yn fasnachol ac yn broffesiynol yn ystod y flwyddyn gan iddynt ddilyn dau briff byw tra gwahanol (C.K. Tools ac Oriel Mostyn), ac rwy’n credu bod ein myfyrwyr sydd yn graddio yn falch fod popeth wedi ei gyflwyno ar amser! Does dim dwywaith bod yr wythnosau diwethaf wedi bod yn wallgof i ni gyd, myfyrwyr a staff, ond mae Cynhadledd Dylunio Bangor ac agoriad swyddogol y Sioe Radd Dylunio wedi datblygu’n ffordd wych o orffen y flwyddyn gyda’n gilydd mewn modd hamddenol a dathliadol. Felly, gwenwch eich hunain yn gyfforddus, ymlaciwch, a mwynhewch, ac i aralleirio Bruce Forsyth – “Daliwch i fraslunio” (Dim cweit mor fachog wedi ei gyfieithu mae’n rhaid i mi gyfaddef!)

The second-year students have developed commercially and professionally following two very different live briefs (C.K. Tools and Mostyn Gallery), and I think our graduating students are just relieved to have got everything in on time! There’s no doubt that the last few weeks have been crazy for us all, students and staff alike, but the Bangor Design Conference and the opening of the Design Degree Show have developed into a wonderful way to round off the year together in a relaxed and celebratory manner. So, sit back, relax, enjoy and to paraphrase the great Bruce Forsyth – “Keep Sketching!”

SID MADGE MAD HEN

Mae Sid Madge yn strategydd brand a sylfaenydd Mad Hen a’r The Meee programme. Dros y 30 mlynedd diwethaf, mae wedi gweithio gyda llawer o frandiau mwyaf y byd ac asiantaethau creadigol mwyaf yn Ewrop.

Sid Madge is a brand strategist and founder of Mad Hen and The Meee Programme. Over the past 30 years, he has worked with many of the world’s largest brands and renowned creative agencies in Europe.

Yn 2009 symudodd Sid i Ogledd Cymru gan herio ei hun o adeiladu asiantaeth frandio yng nghanol unman, heb nabod neb. Hyd yn hyn mae wedi mynd a’i fusnes i’r DU cyfan, Ffrainc, Sbaen, Mecsico, America a Rhif 10 Stryd Downing. Mae’n siarad â channoedd o fusnesau a miloedd o bobl ifanc bob blwyddyn.

In 2009 Sid relocated to North Wales and challenged himself to build a branding agency in the middle of nowhere, knowing no one. To date, he’s taken his businesses to the whole of the UK, France, Spain, Mexico, America and Number 10 Downing Street. He talks to hundreds of businesses and thousands of young people every year.

Pum mlynedd yn ôl sylweddolodd fod angen ei ddoniau mewn mannau eraill. Yn ystod sesiwn fenter mewn ysgol leol, arswydodd fod 15% o blant yn defnyddio geiriau fel ‘freak’, ‘wierdo’, ‘misfit’, ac ‘abnormal’ i ddisgrifio eu hunain. Dros y ddwy flynedd cafodd yr un atebion gan oedolion o bob oed. Roedd y canfyddiadau a ddaeth i’r golwg yn golygu nad oedd pobl yn credu ynddynt eu hunain a bod ansicrwydd ynghylch y dyfodol. Wrth hefyd ystyried yr ystadegau syfrdanol o bryder, iselder a chyfraddau hunanladdiad yn y DU a ledled y byd gwyddai y gallai wneud rhywbeth i helpu.

5 years ago he realised his talents were needed elsewhere. During an enterprise session at a local school, he was horrified that 15% of children used words like ‘freak’, ‘weirdo’, ‘misfit’ and ‘abnormal’ to describe themselves. Over the next 2 years, he got the same answers from adults of all ages. The insights he uncovered were that people don’t believe in themselves and that there’s uncertainty about the future. Add to this the staggering statistics of anxiety, depression and suicide rates in the UK and around the world he knew he could do something to help.

Creodd y ‘Meee Programme’ ac yn y 3 mlynedd ddiwethaf mae wedi bod yn creu ac yn adeiladu deunydd a ysbrydolwyd gan fyd Seicoleg, Niwrowyddoniaeth, Addysg a Chymdeithaseg i gynorthwyo pobl i gredu ynddynt eu hunain. Ers hynny, nid yw wedi edrych yn ôl ac mae bellach yn gweithio gyda chanolfannau gwaith ledled Cymru, asiantaethau ailsefydlu, carchardai a sefydliadau addysgol.

So, he created the ‘Meee Programme’ and in the last 3 years he’s been creating and building tools inspired from the world of Psychology, Neuroscience, Education and Sociology to help people believe in who they are. Since then he’s not looked back and is now working with Jobcentres throughout Wales, rehabilitation agencies, prisons and educational establishments.

SARAH LEECH UNILEVER

Astudiais peirianwaith fecanyddol ond roeddwn wastad yn cael fy nhynnu tuag at pen blaen y broses (er fod fy nhraethawd hir yn trafod egsosts hofrennydd apache... llwyddais i drafod dylunio ac ymarferoldeb yn hytrach na thermodynameg pur. Yn ystod fy ngyrfa rwyf wedi gweithio mewn sawl rôl gwahanol (datblygu pecynnu, rheolaeth dylunio, arwain prosiectau technegol) ac rwyf bob amser wedi llwyddo i gadw fy angerdd dros wneud cysylltiadau, arbrofi a rhoi cynnig ar ddulliau newydd. Ar hyn o bryd rwyf yn arwain ar agweddau technegol o fewn prosiectau arloesol ar gyfer TRESemme ac yn integreiddio meddylfryd dylunio mewn i bopeth a wnaf.

I studied Mechanical Engineering but always gravitated towards the front end of the process (even in my dissertation which was about apache helicopter exhausts... I still managed to twist the subject to look at design and functionality rather than the pure thermodynamics). During my career, I have worked in different roles (packaging development, design management, technical project leadership) and I have always managed to keep my passion for making connections, experimentation and trying new approaches. I currently lead the technical aspects of innovation projects for TRESemme and integrate design thinking and practice into all I do.

REBECCA HAYES-KIDD UNILEVER

Wedi ei hyfforddi fel dylunydd diwydiannol, mae Becky yn defnyddio dulliau dylunio sy’n cael eu gyrru gan emosiwn ac yn berson ganolog i’r holl waith mae’n ei wneud. Ymdrecha Becky i ddod a phrofiadau pwrpasol a dymunol i bobl, gan ysbrydoli rhai sydd o’i chwmpas i weithredu yr un peth drwy ddefnyddio grym meddylfryd dylunio. Mae ròl bresennol Becky yn Unilever yn golygu cynnwys arferion dylunio arloesol sy’n rhoi mantais yn weithredol ac yn y farchnad, gan gyflawni’r uchelgais uwch ar gyfer dylunio yn effeithlon, gan gydweddu’n gadarn â’r holl swyddogaethau cysylltiedig ar draws y busnes.

An industrial designer by training with an emotionally driven, people-centred approach to everything she does. Becky strives to bring purposeful and desirable experiences to real people, inspiring action in those around her to do the same via the power of design thinking methodologies. Becky’s current role in Unilever involves embedding cuttingedge design practices that deliver operational and in-market advantage, effectively and efficiently realising the higherlevel ambition for design, in rigorous alignment with all related functions across the business.

JUDE PULLEN BBC BIG LIFE FIX, SUGRU, EX DYSON & NOW OF LEGO

Mae Jude yn beiriannydd dylunio arobryn gydag awydd heb ei ail i ymchwilio i unrhyw bwnc y daw ar ei draws. Mae’n awyddus i bontio rhwng disgyblaethau sy’n ymddangos yn wahanol iawn a chaiff ei hudo gan heriau dylunio newydd, boed yn rhai dynol, mecanyddol neu rithwir. Mae’n eithriadol o fedrus wrth greu prototeipiau ffisegol, mae’n defnyddio’r modelau hyn i archwilio syniadau dylunio, boed yn gysyniadau i Dyson, dyfais feddygol i’r GIG, robot ymladd tân neu bod gofod bach. Fel Pennaeth Ymchwil, Datblygu a Thechnoleg (2013-17) gyda Sugru, cwmni cychwynnol yn Llundain, mae wedi cael ei ganmol am ei allu rhagorol i ddefnyddio syniadau dylunio yn ei ddull rheoli, tra’n arwain fformiwleiddiadau newydd ‘plentyn-ddiogel’ arloesol wedi eu patentu. Mae nawr yn gweithio yn Lab Chwarae Creadigol LEGO ers hynny i weithio gyda sgowtiaid technoleg ac arloesi. Mae Jude yn ymddangos yn rheolaidd mewn digwyddiadau corfforaethol fel siaradwr, arweinydd gweithdai ac anogwr ffyrdd newydd o ddylunio. Gweithiodd gyda Plant mewn Angen, ac roedd yn un o’r saith dylunydd a gafodd sylw ar raglen “The Big Life FIX gyda Simon Reeve” ar BBC2, yn helpu ffotograffydd ifanc, sydd wedi colli defnydd o’i ddwylo, i dynnu lluniau unwaith eto.

Jude is an award-winning Design Engineer with an unparalleled appetite to investigate each subject matter that crosses his path. With a passion for bridging seemingly disparate disciplines, he is fascinated by fresh design challenges, be they human, mechanical or virtual. Exceptionally skilled at creating physical prototypes, he uses these models to explore design ideas, be they concepts for Dyson, a medical device for NHS, a fire-fighting robot or a mini space-pod. As Head of Research, Development and Technology (2013-17) at London start-up Sugru, he has been praised for his outstanding ability to apply design thinking to his management approach, while leading ground-breaking new patented ‘child-safe’ formulations. Since then, he now works at LEGO’s Creative Play Lab to work with technology scouting and innovation. Jude regularly appears in corporate and startup events as a speaker, workshop leader, or provocateur of new ways of approaching design. He has worked with Children in Need and was one of the seven featured designers on BBC Two’s “The Big Life Fix with Simon Reeve”, helping a young photographer, who has lost the use of his hands, take pictures once again.
