Siste r Camillus grew up in St. Brigid Parish, attending both elementary, where she later taug ht, and secondary school there. She also taught at Noe Valley 's St. Paul's and neighboring St. Philip's. "She is so great and with it," said longtime Holy Namer, Betty Lynch, the younger sister of the celebrated religious. Sister Camillus now resides at her congregation 's motherhouse in Dubuque, Iowa.

Bishops deciding on policies, laws to protect children B y jerry Filteau Catholic News Service WASHINGTON (CNS) — Three key issues faced the U.S. bishops as they met in Dallas to deal with clergy sexual abuse of minors — aiding the victims , dealing firml y with clerical offenders and protecting children fro m now on.

One major question remained unresolved before the bishops meeting, which ends tomorrow; Would the bishop s adopt a universal zero-tolerance policy, or would they allow some extremely limited exceptions for apparentl y reformed one-time past offenders ?

They plainly planned to give notice th at laicization will be requested for any priest who molests a child in the future and that the same fate awaits all offenders with more than one admitted or proven accusation in the past.

When the current crisis began in Boston in January, Cardinal Bernard F. Law spelled out a strict policy that not even a onetime past offender will be allowed to hold any church post again.

After he received a draft report June 6 from the Cardinal's Commission for the Protection of Children — a blue-ribbon group he formed to advise him on sex abuse policy — he endorsed what he called "the commission ' s strong recommendation for a zero-tolerance policy with no exceptions."

Cardinals William H. Keeler of Baltimore and Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles are among top churchmen who have said they will seek an across-the-board policy with no exceptions .

Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit expressed concern about a blanket policy allowing no exceptions but also said the exception clause as drafted is confusing and "has to be more clearly exp lained , or taken out altogether. " He and others suggested that something like a life of seclusion and penance in a monastery could be an alternative tc defrocking for at least some priests who have molested children.

•"Safe environment " education and training programs in every diocese.

•Background checks on all church workers and tougher screening of seminarians.

•Stricter rules on background information when priests move to a different diocese.

Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of St. Paul-Minneapolis , chairman of the committee that drafted the policy, said an exception clause appeared to represent a minority position among the bishops, but the committee included it in the draft in order to put it on the table for debate.

Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago said he thinks there is need to allow room for some limited exceptions.

But he threw out another challenge at a press conference June 10. "There have to be sanctions for a bishop who has been negligent , the same as there are sanctions for a priest," he said. The draft documents sent to the bishops before the meeting included no sanctions for bishops who violate mandated national policy.

Never in the history of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has so much intense preparation and media attention preceded a bishops' meeting.

Virtually everything else originally on the Dallas agenda was scuttled so the bishops could devote their time, after hearing from child abuse victims and prominent lay observers, to hammering out two key documents — a national "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People " and legislative norms giving legal teeth to the charter in all U.S. dioceses.

Among policies in the charter to be voted on by the bishops were: •Establishing a review board in every diocese, with most of its members lay people not employed by the church.

•No more confidentiality agreements unless a victim seeks one for "grave and substantial reasons."

•All allegations involving someone still a minor must be reported to civil authorities. * •Creating a national USCCB office to assist and monitor diocesan implementation.

•A national review board overseeing the national office and diocesan compliance.

•A national research commission to study the church' s response to sexual abuse.

Don 't close borders to migrants, Vatican aide tells OAS meeting

VATICAN CITY —The responses to migration throughout North and South America must be solidarity and generosity, not borders closed to protect one 's own well-being, the Vatican secretary of stale told the region 's foreign ministers.

"Limits on the ethical obligation to welcome immigrants cannot be determined solely by the defense of one 's own well-being," Cardinal Angelo Sodano wrote to partici pants in the general assembly of the Organizati on of American States.

Foreign ministers and other government delegates from 34 member states met June 2-4 in Bridgetown , Barbados.

Cardinal Sodano's message said globalization , die vary ing levels of development and poverty throughout the region, civil conflicts and natural disasters have provoked an increasing migration of peoples. "As a reaction , the countries or regions which receive trie migratory flow easily can give into the temptation of intolerance and social discrimination against minorities, the abuse of the weakest sectors and a disproportionate defense of the well-being, employment and other social benefits they have acquired," Cardinal Sodano said.

Guatemala's bishops say politics, corruption impede p eace accords

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Guatemala 's Catholic bishops, hopeful that the ailing Pope John Paul II will visit their country in Jul y for the canonization of Blessed Pedro de San Jose Betancur, have issued a pastoral letter describing the somber panorama that the pope will encounter there.

According to the bishops , a major problem for the country is the failure to implement the 1996 peace accord s thai put an end to three decades of civil war. "The peace accord s, whose implementation faces so many difficulties and contradictions , remain a pending task. We recognize that the deep meaning of the accords has not been assumed

by Guatemalans and therefore hasn 't passed from the written word to the heart," the bishops said.

The 34-page letter condemned those who use public office and the justice system to accumulate further privilege. "We condemn murder, corruption, injustice , theft, and the pillage of our national heritage," they wrote. "We cannot be silent when confronted by injustice and the abuse of the innocent," diey said.

Archbishop Weahland makes p ublic ap ology f or 'my sinfulness '

MILWAUKEE —- Wearing a simple white alb, crimson zucchetto, his favorite pectoral cross and purple stole of penance , former Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland used carefull y chosen words and visible acts of contrition in a public apology during a prayer service in a chapel at the archdiocesan center May 31.

During a seven-minute homily delivered in somber, sometimes faltering tones, a gaunt Archbishop Weakland apologized five times. Once he finished speaking, the clearly grief-stricken gathering of 400 rose in sustained applause, as their former archbishop knelt before them, shoulders hunched, hands shaking.

VATICAN CITY — With Vatican officials giving mixed signals about whether Pope John Paul II would visit Mexico in Jul y, devotees of Blessed Juan Diego were left wondering if and when the peasant who saw Our Lady of Guadalupe would become a saint. An official at the Congregation for Saints ' Causes said two things are certain: Only the pope can canonize someone, and Pope John Paul plans to canonize Blessed Juan Diego.

"Up until the moment of the celebration , the way, the time and the place can change," the official told Catholic News Service. "Changes are always possible, even when things have been announced in a formal way," he said. "Just like a wedding, you set the date and send out invitations , but until the moment of the ceremony you can make changes."

Joaquin Navarro-Vails , Vatican spokesman, and later Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, told reporters in late May that, while the pope 's Jul y trip to Toronto for World Youth Day has been confirmed, the Mexico and Guatemala stops at the end of the trip were being reviewed.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The Haitian bishops ' justice and peace commission criticized the country 's politicians and international donors for being preoccupied with politics rather than Haiti's economic and social well-being. "Must it always be the people who pay the price for the country 's divisions?" said a statement, signed by Father Jean Hanssens , commission director, and Jean-Edy Guillaumette , executive secretary of the Port-au-Prince Archdiocese's justice and peace commission.

Flawed elections in 2000 led some groups to question the legitimacy of several senators ' victories; since then , donor countries and aid agencies have held up some $500 million in aid, which is having a critical effect on the Haitian population. "The country'isjust going downhill ," said the commission 's statement.

The U.N. Population Fund reports that 73 percent of Haiti's population of 8.2 million lives in "extreme poverty, " and 8 percent of the country's children.are malnourished. In addition , an estimated 5 percent of Haiti's population is HIV positive , and the death rate for those under 40 is 27 percent.

'The people cannot live any more. The entirety of cultural and socio-economic rights are being trampled underfoot, and there is no hope of things improving, " the commission said, ft criticized the international community for the freeze on aid , saying it resulted in an exacerbation of Haiti' s poverty.

Father Paul Arnoult 'To bring Christ into the lives of peop le, to let them know they are loved. '

By Patrick Joyce "There was no thunderbolt ," Paul Arnoult says as he looks over the path that led him first to a reli gious order novitiate , then to 11 years in the biotech industry and finally, last Saturday, to ordination as a priest.

The first thoug hts about a vocation came when Father Arnoult was in college. He talked to his uncle Leo, a Dominican priest who was "very supportive. He didn ' t want to push me. He told me to look at all the possibilities , not to rush into anything. " After the second year of college, he entered a Marianist novitiate . "I left after a year and a half , before taking vows, in the earl y '80s. It just seemed the religious life was not for me. I decided I just didn 't have a call to the reli gious life."

He went back to college , thinking "I'd get a job and get married. " The first part of the equation worked , and the second part almost came true.

He went on to earn a bachelor 's degree from San Francisco State University. In his last year of college , he stalled working for a biotech firm in South San Francisco , and continued there for 11 years. Over the years he dated and once came "fairly close " to marry ing, i "All that time I was very involved at St. Ignatius Church. I was a eucharistic minister, a lector, an adult acolyte and I helped to start a young adult group. " St. Ignatius ' pastor, Jesuit Father Charles Gagan, "was a very positive influence. " "My faith was always strong, " Father Arnoult said. "I never had a crisis of faith. There were some rough times but I never left the faith."

For about 10 years, he concentrated on his job and his life as a lay person. "I didn 't real ly consider a vocation. At work, people would say things to me like, 'I can come to you with my troubles and talk about them. I can see you being a counselor. 1 can see you being a priest. "' His renewed interest in a vocation came graduall y.

"There was no li ghtening bolt. There wasn 't reall y any major thing. I read about a guy in his 30s who hud come to the seminary. I had thoug ht that if you didn ' t do it as a kid , you didn 't do it. " Then he looke d at the lives of other peop le his age, "If they 're in a demanding job , people often leave after 10 years, to go-Hnlo a new career," he says. His career change would be more dramatic than most.

"I still had a deep relig ious faith but I reall y didn ' t know about the diocesan priesthood. I had never reall y considered the diocesan priesthood before. I had lived in parishes with reli g ious order priests , and I had an uncle who was a Dominican."

into it and said , 'This is what I was looking for years ago. ' The life of a diocesan priest is more appealing to me, to my personality, than a very structure d religious order life. " In the fall of 1995 he took three months off fro m work to think and pray about it. "When you 're working 12 hours a day, six days a week" you don 't have time to think. "I went on a retreat. In fact, it was like a three-month retreat .

I asked myself, 'Is this what I reall y want?' It was a testing period. " The idea of a priestl y vocation "seemed a littl e bit daunting, " Father Arnoult says but he came back to work with his decision made. "I said, 'I'm going to do it, '" he recalls. "They said , 'We'll miss out but we support you. '" He worked another six months before entering St. Patrick' s Seminary, Menlo Park , in the fall of 1996. He has earned bachel or 's and master 's degrees in theology and a master of divinity degree at St. Patrick's. He also did a pastoral year of service from the summer of 1999 to the summer of 2000 at St. Cecilia Parish in San Francisco.

"It has been a wonderful blessing, ail the way through ," he said. "What permeates it is an overwhelming sense of gratitude - to God, to my family, my friends , Catholic and non-Catholic , young and old , religious and those without religion.

They have loved and supported me."

"Anybod y with faith has ups and downs. It's not all straight up. The adjustment to seminary life has ups and downs , going from your

own home to one room with the shower down the hall when you ' re 36. Going back to school. I was always a good student but not a great one. . . . I won ' t say it was easy.

There were hard classes and easy classes, classes I liked and classes I didn ' t. " "I just handed it over to God. It seemed a natural extension of how I lived and practiced my life as a lay person. " He sees hardships ahead because of. "the crisis the Church is going through. " He has been deeply hurt by the scandal , wondering "How can this be happening?"

"People say to me, 'How can you get involved in this?'

The devil is having a field day. It is very difficult to understand how these horrible things can happen. I am try ing to be faithful."

He is looking forward to the "joys in being able to help bring Christ into the lives of people, to let them know they are loved , that they ' re good enough. A lot of people say, T am worthless. " They need someone who represents Christ to say they are OK, that the love of God is always there , We're all imperfect. God doesn ' t ask us to be perfect. God asks us to be faithful. "

Padre Pio Cap uchin famed as intercessor for suffe ring to be canonized Capuchin Franciscan Padre Pio, known around the worl d for his devotion to prayer and as an intercessor with God on behalf of the sick and suffering, will be cannonized this Sunday, June 16, by Pope John Paul II in Rome. The Kalian priest , born Francesco Forgione , died in 1968 at age 81.

At Padre Pio 's beatification ceremonies in 1999, the pope praised him for his long hours of hearing confessions - said lo be 10 to 12 hours a day - and for his charitable work for the poor and sick. The pope also , praised the priest " s obedience and steadfast faith during the Vatican-ordered suspension of his public ministry and investi gations into his mental health after he developed the stigmata; bleeding wounds like those of the crucified Christ.

Today, 34 years after his death , the memory and life of Padre ¦ Pio continue to draw some 8 million pil grims to San Giovanni

Rotondo , the town in Italy where he spent most of his life as a priest. The village is the number one pil grimage destination in Europe , and second worldwide only to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico where 10 mil lion people travel each year.

"Padre Pio has been a great example to the Capuchin community, " said Capuchin Father Ronald Tilbott, provincial of the Province of Our Lady of Angels which serves the Western United States and Northern Mexico .

Father Talbott, ordained in 198 1 and a Capuchin since 1975, spoke especiall y of the future saint 's prayer life. "We get so bogged down in work that we sometimes don 't find enoug h time for prayer," he said.

"Padre Pio reminds us of that as well as the power and love of God shining through someone like him. " Our Lady of Angels Parish , Burlingame , has been

"When the Churc h is looking at somebod y as a candidate for canonization , what they are looking forks 'Did this person lead a virtuous life to a heroic degree?' The sti gmata becomes a kind of distraction and the Church wisely is very, very skeptical about any kind of p henomenon which peop le claim is supernatural. Psychiatrists say the power of the mind is that great that if a person has a very sensitive kind of a disposition and is meditating upon the wounds of Christ they may actually start manifesting physically. " Father Gregory said that while the Church goes to great lengths to establish that the phenomenon is not contrived , it does not pronounce it as supernatural.

"What the Church really does is have to look past the stigmata and say, 'Was this person really a holy and virtuous person?'" Father Gregory said. "In the case of Padre Pio, by the witness of his life, it was pretty apparent that he was."

"Padre Pio was a man of great prayer and penitence " and "through his intercession people were cured of all kinds of diseases ," said Our Lad y of Angels pastor. Capuchin Father Gerald Barron , in an invitation to parishioners to attend a Mass today at 11 a.m. in thanksg iving "to God for the gift of St. Padre Pio to both the Churc h and the world. " In a communication to Capuchin Friars throughout the world , Capuchin Brother Paolo Cuvino , leader of the Capuchin province that includes San Giovanni Rotondo, said , "On this day, when our confrere , Blessed Padre Pio of Pieireclina , is fully glorified on earth , it is right that we should rejoice and exult , praise , bless and magnif y the one Lord who has done and continues lo do wondrous things in his faithful servants. " Included among the millions who have asked for Padre Pio 's spiritual support is Pope John Paul II who , in 1 962 as Archbishop of Krakow, wrote to the priest asking his prayers for a Polish woman with throat cancer. Less than two weeks later, he wrote again to Padre Pio, reporting that she suddenly and without explanation had been cured.

'Untiring champ ion of poor'

Mercy Sister Patrick Curran of St. Anthony Foundation dies

By Patrick Joyce Merc y Sister Patrick Curran , an "untiring champ ion of the poor " throug hout her religious life , died in Burlingame , June 10, following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sister Patrick ' s life was marked by "an und y ing love for the poor, a passion for the poor," first as a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor and later as a Sister of Merc y and executive director of the St. Anthony Foundation , said Franciscan Father John Hardin , her successor at the foundation.

"She would fi ght anyone, in any way who would stand in the way of the poor," Father Hardin said. "She was untiring in her efforts to maintain the dignity of our guests at St. Anthony ' s. Even at the end, when I would visit her she would ask, 'How are things going at the foundation? ' She was totally committed to the other. Her needs were always second to the needs of the poor."

Born in Scotland in 1943, Sister Patrick moved with her famil y to Chicago when she was four. In 1964 she professed vows as a Little Sister of the Poor. She spent her earl y years serving the poor and homeless in Harlem and East Los Angeles. She served as associate administrator of St. Anne Home in San Francisco and residential care facilities in Denver, Los Angeles , and St. Paul , Minn .

In 1984, Sister Patrick joined the Sisters of Mercy.

In a recent interview . with Catholic San Francisco , Sister Patrick described her decision as "a mystery of faith ," calling the Little Sisters of the Poor "a wonderful group of women — holy, holy women. " In choosing a new community, she looked to the Sisters of Mercy. "1 was educated by the Sisters of Mercy, and part of their whole charism is the poor. It was a natural for me. . . It was an exciting moment. I felt very called."

Sister Patrick served as assistant administrator, then as vice-president and chief operating officer of Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland fro m 1985-1997.

Sister Patrick didn 't limit herself to serving the poor at the retirement center. With other sisters she would go out in a van on winter mornings to street corners in Oakland where the poor gathered.

"In Oakland there were so many people on the street corners. It was freezing," she said. "We would go to all the different corners and offer hot coffee , doughnuts and oranges , whatever we could get."

Award , bestowed by the Pope , for her work with the poor. In 200 1 she received an honorary degree from the University of San Francisco School of Nursing for her service to the sick and the aging.

Three years ago, Sister Patrick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and told she would die soon. "First it was two months , then six," she said during the interview last December. "And now I have forever. It 's been over three years now. I think , 'With God there is no time. '" Sister Patrick resi gned as executive director of St. Anthony 's Foundation last October. "It.broke my heart but I knew it was the ri ght decision. I was so tired. . .

Cancer makes you very tired. It 's so fatiguing."

"With a serious disease , such as I have , if you do not have yourself deep ly roote d in God and quietly set aside time for prayer , I can 't see how you can have the courage to go on ," she said. "I believe God never asks us to do more than we can handle. " "You can 't give up hope. I see more poverty but I see more hope. At St. Anthony ' s we have hundreds of young peop le coming to work — at other not-for-profits. The young peop le are a sign of hope for the future. . . . I have a hope in peop le. Lots of good things are going on now. Families coming together and hel p ing other families. That is power — good power."

Sister Patrick said her commitment to the poor came from the example of her mother and father. They were "hard-working, good hearted peop le. . . They always shared what we had with those who didn ' t have," she said.

In her thre e years at St. Anthony 's, she said , "The thing that touched me the deepest was the commitment of Franciscans and their fidelity to the ministry, to the poorest of the poor."

"St. Anthony 's is a pure work of God. Everyone connected with it is there because they trul y- love the poor and they are looking for new, creative ways to serve the poor. " Father Hardin said that Sister Patrick showed those same qualities , not only in serving the guests at St. Anthony 's but also in finding volunteers and contributors. It was incredible ," he said. "She threw out her dragnet and got all sorts of people involved - people you would never think would get involved. Father 's Day My two year old , Sean, is not yet at the age where 1am called upon to give him fatherl y advice. But I am at the age when I must begin thinking about what I will have to say when the bi g questions are posed. Or so I' m told.

Thinking about the answers, I've searched my memory for the wise advice given to me by my own father and other men I consider to have been father figures; grandfathers , uncles , cousins, priest friends. After much reflection , I am stuck with the conclusion that none of these men ever gave me a single memorable p iece of advice. Yet, they informed the person I am and remain critical role models — not by anything they said , but by everything they 've done.

To cite two short examp les: My father has been faithfull y married to my mother for 34 years and he loves her. He's actively raised ten children.

Three are still at home and he's hel ping out with five grandchildren right now. He's gone to almost every swim meet and water polo match any of us have been in. That's ten kids times two swim seasons a year and a water polo season. He's read everything I've ever written, even in high school and college, and been interested in every detail of every job I' ve had .

The same is true for his interest in the pursuits of his other children. We are his pride and joy. Somewhere in between, he 's a successful stockbroker. He does his duty,

Jack Smith and he doesn ' t complain. He loves us and we know it. It 's that simple and it 's that hard, and 1 am in awe of him.

Father CM. Buckley, S.J. is an extraordinary father — father to those he knows, father to those he doesn ' t. I say father, not just because the church calls priests , father, but because his ministry is analogous to that of an earthly father. When I knew him at the University of San Francisco, he'd be up to say 6 a.m. Mass at the Carmelite chapel , then teach class, then hear confessions at St. Ignatius Church, class again and 10 p.m. Mass for students.

In between all that , I suppose he prepared for class, graded papers, and did research for his books and translations.

Somehow, he was also able to develop a strong concern and inte rest for all of his students , and they turn to him in droves to officiate at weddings and baptisms. He loves

those in his care and they know it by what he does. Again, nothing very complicated , but something veiy hard to carry on, I asked him for advice once and he didn 't say anything very interesting, but I turn to his example and my father ' s whenever 1 need to be goaded into doing what I need to do to be a faithful Christian and a father and a man.

The impression that a father has more influence by what he does than what he advises is already evident , for better and worse, in my son. He's a talker. He is certain and declarative. He's picked up an unfortunate vocabulary. He likes to tinker. All from me.

He can also take charge with a sympathetic word and deed when the situation arises. If mom's had a hard day and she looks sad (even if it's his fault), he'll drop his silliness run up with a big hug and in total sincerity exclaim, "Don 't worry, mommy.

It 's OK. I can help." I'd like to think that 's some of me as well.

I have one hope for this Father 's Day. I want to live up to the simple faithfulness of the men who showed me the meaning of faithfulness. I want to be a father and I want to be a man.

I have the same prayer for the bishops as they gather in Dallas: that aside from listening to advice or giving advice , they look to the examp le of the one Father who is in heaven.

Here is the law, these are the consequences. See that 1 am faithful. See that I love you.

O RD I NARY T IME 'Let us pray especially for healing and peace for these victims' Archbishop William Levada gave the following "Reflections for an Afternoon of Prayer " at Si. Mary 's Cathedral June 2, the Feast Of Corpus Christi.

With a grateful heart I welcome you this afternoon , my sisters and brothers in Christ to this time of prayer in the presence of the Most Hol y Sacrament of the Eucharist , the Blessed Sacrament . We gather to pray as our first and necessary duty for our Church , the Body of Christ , in her time of crisis. What bette r occasion to call us to prayer for the Bod y of Christ which is the Churc h than on this Feast of Corpus Christi , the Body of Christ , the Eucharist. In this sacrament Jesus has left us Himself , present with us in bread and wine transformed into his own Bod y, given for us on the cross, and into his precious Blood , poured out for us so th at sins mi ght he forgiven.

Today in our afternoon of prayer we honor and adore Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament , which we carry in procession , contemplate on the altar of sacrifice and whose blessing we receive in Benediction . This beautiful devotion recalls to our minds and hearts the central mystery of our salvation: that "God so loved the worl d that he gave his only Son , so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life" (John 3:16). This Divine Son , the Word of God, took on flesh and became one of us, embracing our sinful humanity even to death on a cross (cf Phil 2:8) It was at that point that he left us this abiding gift of himself in the Eucharist: it is the re-presentation of his sacrifice on the cross, whose memorial reenacted at every Mass guarantees that we may experience the depths of his love for us , in the forgiveness of our sins, it is the sacrament of our union with him whom we receive in Holy Communion.

At Christmas we delight in celebrating the great feast of Emmanuel , God-with-us. In a sense, the Eucharist is the extension of that presence of the Word Incarnate with us. It is Jesus ' presence, "up close and personal ," — as companion and spiritual food for our p il gri m journey of life, and as our pledge of etern al life — that we contemplate in faith today, as we walk in procession with him , hear the proclamation of his word to us, and pray the Psalms that he himself prayed as our Evening Prayer. Like Mary at the foot of the cross, we too use this time of prayer to prepare our hearts to embrace his body taken down from the cross and risen for us, and to drink from the blood that poured forth from his side, pierced by the soldier 's lance.

We pray, moreover , for our Church , our holy Mother who gave birth to each one of us in the womb of the baptismal font. We pray for those brothers and sisters who have been wounded — who, when they were children and adolescents , were victims of sexual abuse by some of her bishops and priests. Their abuse was a grave wound to the Body of Christ, the Church , a wound that our Holy Father Pope John Paul II calls "an appalling sin in the eyes of God. " As we kneel in prayer before the Body of Christ in the Eucharist today, let us pray especially for . healing and peace for these victims, and for their reconciliation with their God and with their Church, the Mystical Body of Christ .

In a particular way today, I invite your prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon the upcoming meeting of the bishops of the United States nex t week in Dallas. This will be an important moment for the whole Church, and especially for us bishops , whom Christ has called to guide and shepherd his Church as

successors of the first Apostles. We know that we must do our best to formulate a national policy, so that throug hout the United States we may address the vari ous issues related to the sexual abuse of minors including the failures in proper oversi ght by some bishop s — in a new way that will guarantee the safety and protection of our children.

It is my personal hope that our Conference of Bishops will commission an independent stud y by experts to ascertain the root causes of such criminal behavior by even a few priests. We need to know why Archbishop William J. Levada these men would give themselves permission — in the face of God's commandments and their own vows — to abuse these innocent members of the flock whom Christ caused this abuse. Archbishop Levada ordains Paul Arnoult , Timothy Nguy en

By Patrick Joyce . nests are called "to stand in the place of the Good Shepherd , in f ; the midst of his people ," Archbishop William Levada told Pau l Arnoult and Timothy Nguyen as he ordained them to the priesthood at a liturgy in St. Mary 's Cathedral June 8.

"At this crossroads of culture , of peoples from so many backgrounds and nations and languages here in San Francisco, " Archbishop Levada said in his homily, "today we have two men up from East and West to be joined in the service of Christ's Church in the sacrament of Holy Orders.

We give thanks to God for his mercy and goodness to us. " Pau l Anoult was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in i960, and moved to the West Coast with his family when he was seven. After working for 11 years with a biotech firm , he entered St. Patrick's Seminary in 1996.

He will serve as a priest of the archdiocese.

Timothy Nguyen was born in Saigon in 1970. He and his family eventually made their way to America, and he entered the Salesians of St.John Bosco in l992.

Archbishop Levada told the new priests that they are called to lives of love, service and obedience in union with their fellow priests, their bishop and religious superior.

The litu rgy 's reading from Jeremiah shows that the prophet does not choose his vocation but is chosen by God to be the instrument of God's puipose, the archbishop said.

"When the Lord indicates to Jeremiah that he will be sent wherever the Lord chooses it is the perfect lesson for today 's ordination. For these men are ordained to the priesthood p ledged to their provincial superior and their bishop... to do God's work, wh atever that may be. " The new priests are not alone, Archbishop Levada said. They are one with their fellow priests, in union with their bishop or religious superior.

"One of the most striking ritu als of the ordination ceremony is the laying on of hands, th at gesture which is mentioned often in the Acts of the Apostles as the particular sign of the conferral of the gifts of the Holy S p i r i t . . . " he said. "In a few moments, after I impose hands on the ordained , all of their brother priests will pass by, one by one, in this ritu al gesture , the imposition of hands of the whole presbyterate , and they will kn ow th at they have been ordained into a hol y order, the presbyterate.... " As th ey are one with their fellow priests and bishop, they are "to be a special sacramental sign to the people of God to help us all understand that the gift of the Holy Spirit ... is a gift to make us one in Christ 's love."

"It is that love to which Jesus referred after the resurrection in that beautiful dialogue with Peter, " Archbishop Levada said, quoting from the Gospel of John: "Peter, do you love me?"

"Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. " "Then feed my sheep. " Like Peter, the new priests are called to feed the Lord's sheep, the archbishop said. "The mission of the shep herd , the work of the shepherd, the priesthood of the shepherd is a priesthood built on love , " he said. " . . . . as other shepherds to stand in the p lace of the Good Shepherd, in the midst of his people. " In his questioning of the two candidates before ordination , each is asked to say "yes " to a series of questions. Their answers, Archbishop Levada said, show their commitment: "to work in a unity of purpose with your bishop and fellow priests to create that one, holy, catholic church that Jesus has sent his apostles to form. " . . . to celebrate the sacraments of holiness and sanctification , " especially the Holy Eucharist, for the people again and again "to faitiifully proclaim his holy word, the word of God handed down to us in the Holy Scriptures and break open that word in nourishment."

"You say 'yes' to these questions in these troubled times in which some of are brother priests have sadly abandoned their precious and holy vocation , " Archbishop Levada said. "You say 'yes' for us your brother priests and your bishop and we rejoice to be here with you , in this commitment of the presbyterate of Christ , the priesthood of Christ in the.Church. " "We thank God today for the gift of priestly servants for his Church, for shepherds to serve in the name of the Good Shep herd arid to be filled with that holy joy that comes to us on a day such as today when these two brother priests are ordained. " Archbishop Levada also thanked Father Nguyen 's order. The Salesians have ' 'served the people of God in this archdiocese for more than 100 years... as faithful cooperators in the mission of Christ , " he said.

The archbishop had special praise for Vietnamese Catholics. They come, he said from a "land of such staunch Catholic fai th and yet such suffering and persecution. It is a nation that is rich in faithful people who continue to offer themselves to the service of the Church as priests and religious , to strengthen their community and indeed our whole Catholic community and our American culture with their gifts."

Restoring Trust and Confidence The fallowing commentary was written by Archbishop William J. Levada: The Catholic Church in America is experiencing a crisis without precedent in its history ... a crisis that is the result of sexual abuse of minors by priests and bishops, and also the result of the failure of some bishops and church officials to deal effectively with these serious matters. These actions have caused tremendous pain and suffering to victims and their families and brought shame and confusion to Catholics throughout the nation.

We are suffering for the sins of priests and bishops who preferred their own pleasure to the safety and protection of children entrusted to their care. And we are suffering for the mistakes of bishops and administrators who placed their desire to protect the reputation and service of priests, who had proven themselves unfaithful in them duties, above the future protection of innocent children.

U.S. Catholic bishops will focus at their annual spring meeting in Dallas this week on the proposed "charter for the protection of children and young people."

This charter is a comprehensive framework for candid discussion and decisive action aimed at restoring trust and confidence in the Catholic Church in America.

The U.S. bishops ' meeting will start with a broad recognition of the devastating and long-lasting damage caused by sexual abuse. The bishops reach out to those who suffer and apologize to them for what we as bishops have done and for what we have failed to do.

I acknowledge this apology may sound hollow if it cannot be based on the promise of amendment. I call upon such persons, especially the priests guilty of sexual abuse of minors, to make amends and to convey to th eir victims that they truly repent of their crimes.

The charter calls for measures to ensure a safe environment for children and youth, healing and reconciliation of clergy abuse victims , prompt and effective response to all allegations , reporting of suspected abuse and cooperation with civil authorities, removal of offenders , establishment of mandatory lay review boards in all dioceses and the creation of a national office to oversee the accountability of church officials.

Importantly, U.S. bishops will seek to formulate a uniform national policy so that throughout the United States the Catholic Church will address the sexual abuse of minors in a consistent and comprehensive manner.

The draft charter calls for dioceses to report to civil authorities any accusation of sexual abuse of a person who is a minor and to cooperate in any investigation. This civil requirement complements the new practice determined last year by the Holy See which requires any instance of sexual abuse of minors by clergy to be reported to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faitii. This new Vatican policy places sexual abuse of children in die category of extraordinarily grave crimes against faith and morals, such as desecration of the Eucharist and breaking of the seal of confession.

It is my personal hope that U.S. bishops will commission an independent study by experts to ascertain the root causes of such criminal behavior by even a few priests. We need to know why these men would give themselves permission ... in the face of God's commandments and their own vows ... to abuse these innocent members of the floc k whom Christ himself had entrusted to then care .

Many reasons for such behavior have been offered by a variety of commentators, sometimes reflecting a personal ideology rather than reality or a true understanding of Catholic teaching on sexuality. But we need to know why the sexual abuse of children by priests over the past several decades could amount to even 1 percent of Catholic clergy.

In sum, we must ach ieve a new openness in speaking out against the abuse of children. We must commit ourselves to act quickly to ensure that civil authorities are notified of any suspected abuse of a minor and to remove any offender from rrrinistry for appropriate evaluation and u'eatment. We also must take the necessary steps to guarantee that this tragic cycle of abuse will not happen again. Indeed, we should work with abuse survivors and otiiers in educating the general public about issues of sexual abuse.

We also should make sure that present admissions policies for our priestly and diaconate formation programs do their best to screen out persons at risk for sexual misconduct with minors, and persons who show any indications of sexual immaturity. Finally, I believe that we bishops will also have to address how to deal with the misconduct of bishops , and present our conclusions and recommendations to our Holy Father.

Much is at stake. The Dallas meetings signal a sea change and the beginning of an ongoing, multi-step process designed to fully address the serious issues involved . The moral position of the Catholic Church must be reasserted.

Restoring trust and confidence , of course, is important for the 63 million U.S. Catholics who have been traumatized by the crisis. Effective change also will be welcomed by the many friend s and colleagues of Catholics. Society at large also is an interested party given the role of the Catholic Church and Catholics in building this nation and our communities, and our contributions too in the education of youth , in justice and labor issues and health, poverty and immigration concerns.

We welcome the prayers of people of faith and the encouragement of all our fellow citizens in our efforts. ( Commentary printed in San Fracnisco Chronicle 6/1 1/02)

1 wonder if Fr. Ron Rolheiser deliberately chose Trinity Sunday to correct the Scri ptures politi call y by abandoning the Trinity for what would presumabl y be a tetranity—'King, Queen , Son and Hol y Spirit. King and Queen "empowering " each other by rolling in the hay for all eternity.

(Empowering is his favorite word.

Three times he has the Omnipotent empowered. Is it a coincidence that that 's also one of the favorite words of the radical feminists?)

Among the questions raised by this new theology: Was the Father unfaithful to the mother when he chose to have his only son by Mary? Was God the first adulterer?

Do we reall y need "a more inclusive language about God" in the first place? Jews have called God Father for 5000 years and Christians have for another 1970 because that 's the way He revealed Himself and that 's the way His Son talked about Him. If it were necessary for us to pray to "Our Father and Mother who embrace ecstatical ly all day leaving dew on the grass... " wouldn 't Jesus have said so?

Rolheiser does not cite one iota of authority from Scripture, Tradition or Magisterium for his proposed doctrine of tetvamty. He's obviously making up his reli gion as he goes along.

I think he perhaps inadvertently gives himself away in his last para( I graph when he refers to God in terms of fairy tale. Does Catholic San Francisco really do a service to the Archdiocese by printing the theology of a tetranitar- ' ian who regards God as a fairy tale?

Faith and spirituality are different for every single person, disabled or not. The disabled community should not be separated from their parishes because they learn or understand differently. Instead of "separate but equal" it should be just "equal".

There is a Special Needs Board in the Archdiocese which is beginning the long jo urney of addressing the needs of all members of our community. Obviousl y some accommodations have to be made, but those are minor. The real changes need to be in the hearts and minds of the people, the priests and the Churc h itself that our faith is open to everyone.

The disabled members of our Catholic community, and especiall y the children, are too often overlooked as vibrant contributing members of our faith. Sy lvia 's simple desire to have her daughter 's spiritual needs addressed started an awakening in that parish and hopefully in the rest of the diocese as well.

Religious education programs should include everyone who wants to take part.

On Sunday, May 25th, St. Anthony 's Youth Group had a special graduation liturgy and brunch to honor die group 's high school graduates. As is the custom, we asked one of the seniors to deliver a reflection of her memories associated with her involvement in our parish and youth group. In light of all the negative press that our Catholic clergy are receiving, it was suggested to me that 1 share some of Kelly Owen's comments during her talk about our pastor.

"M y time with youth group would not have been what it was without Father Kevin Gaffey. My relationshi p with him can be summed up with one phrase - 'Papa G' ." I feel so blessed to have Father Gaffey not only as my p riest, but also as a friend and a third grandpa. His dedication to this parish and genuine love for each member of the youth group never ceases to amaze me. He is an incredible source of wisdom and knowledge that we are luck y to have. Thank you Father Gaffey, for everything you give and do. " There are many priests who deserve positive coverage and I am pleased to share one teen 's feelings about our pastor.

I am so very sorry to read the letter written by Mr. Patrick O'Hi ggins from Oakland in the May 31 st issue of Catholic San Francisco.

Mr. Higgins, who is a baptized Catholic and is gay is definitel y a member of the Catholic family. However, in families, there are children who will not listen to truths and who make mistakes. We all should listen to the teachings of our church and make decisions for our lives based on our Lord's teaching through the church.

I was glad to see Evelyn Zappia's informative article (May 17) on Seton Medical Center 's Partial Hospitalization Program that helps people recovering from mental illness.

Unfortunately the fine descri ption of the Program 's achievement is undermined by the illustration accompanying the article and also displayed on the front page with the teaser headline "Bold step toward mental health." It would have been better if there were no illustration at all rather than this figure of a distorted Martha Stewart-style woman holding a face mask contorted into a hysterical expression an image suggesting the stereotypical association of women with emotional problems and the misconception that people with mental illness can control their condition as if it were a theatrical mask they flash over their faces. This incongruous image shows either carelessness or an insensitivity to the article 's text.

Parent 's words of advice in a time of pain Reading the news, turning on the TV, has become somewhat of a chore in the last weeks. Because I work for the Churc h and love it , I find it difficult to see scandal after scandal paraded in front of me. I' m sure many feel the same way.

My job is public policy, which means that I must often meet with peop le in government , business , labor and community groups. At limes, the snickers have been open. The comments range horn sympathy, sometimes real, sometimes fei gned, to hostile and in the "I told you so" variety.

Usuall y quick to offer comments with these people and groups , I have been hesitant to offer an opinion on certain subjects , especially if they pertain to sexuality or morals.

Personally, I feel deep sadness and a dull pain. Pain for the victims who have been screaming at us (figurativel y and literall y) to hear them, acknowledge them, be there for them. Pain for those priests, friends of mine, who have never molested a child , who live chaste lives , who are dark ened by this pall of corruption. Pain for the Church, which seems to strain under this burden of human frailty and evil.

And I have ideas , like many others , about what must be done. As a parent , diere are two things that come immediately to mind. The first is that these molested children, now grown up, need to cry out their pain , anger and hurt to the Church. My wish would be that every bishop in the United States should have to sit in a room with victims for as long as it take s and listen to them. Many of them have done this alread y. It is essential for finding solutions.

Second, bishop s ought to lock themselves in a room with parents of small children and ask them what they would do with the victims and the perpetrators . This is dif-

ferent than consulting lawyers , public relations specialists , and psycholog ists. This is trul y exp loring the sensum fideli.

This might even lead to a pastoral solution , rather than a legal or public relations solution.

Finally, and most important , the bishops need to find a way to make trul y independent boards of experts , not directl y appointed by them , to ascertai n whether allegations are plausible against priests. They should do this for two reasons.

First, their role as pastors to victims is inherentl y compromised by their role as pastors to their perpetrator priests.

This tension often results in the bishop (Church) being perceived as not reall y caring about the victims. There needs to be more differentiation and a division of roles to make clear that the Church trul y cares about the victims and actuall y does something to hel p them.

The perception that the Church cares more about its errant priests over the victims is, in part , caused by bishops trying to do two very different things in their role as pastor to both victim and priest perpetrator. This can be clarified by letting independent board s make crucial decisions that will be free of any hint of "cover-up " and allow the bishop to be a pastor. Once freed , the bishops will be able to form or modify structures within their diocese to trul y and completely minister to the victims and to take care of the priestperpetrator.

Second , if an archbishop or bishop is accused (this seems to be happening with more frequency) how can a board (if there is one) appointed by the bishop or archbishop expect to be received with any credibility ?

Let me end on a hopeful note.

As I write this, I am looking at my daughter Leah's First Communion picture . She and her second grade classmates received the Bread oi Life for the first time at the beginning of May. The angelic girls in white Q vvcauiCK eorffe V Lg p Wesolek dresses, the tow-headed ^ "Z boys in the uncomfortable blue suits processed solemnl y into a Church filled with parents, grandparents and friends who were not thinking of child molestation and priests who have done these evi l things. They were thinking of this fresh , new life beginning a new chapter of their children 's journey of faith . The feelings were joyous, and optimistic .

Even now, as I look around my parish church at Sunday Mass, peop le are attentive to the words of our Pastor. They laug h at his jokes. They feel his love for them and they know his service to them in need.

The Church still goes on and it does so through the work of good priests. Most of our people know that and will not let this darkness overtake them.

Planting — trees and kids — for the future 'Look, Mom," said Gabe, pulling a long, narrow plastic sack out of his backpack. "They gave us a tree to plant. " Gabe's second grade class had taken a field trip to the University of Washington Arbor Day Fair. He came back singing tree songs, explaining how they make paper, and carrying a Douglas Fir seedling.

"When can we plant it?" he asked.

It was a classic case of bringing coals to Newcastle.

"Well," I said , glancing out the window at the towering evergreens that surround our home, "we've already got a lot of fir trees. I' m not sure we have room for another. " "But I want to plant it!"

"Wh y don 't we put it in the refrigerator while we think about it?"

Once in the refrigerator, I figured, Gabe might just forget all about it. With close to 40 trees in the yard, we didn 't need another. It seemed sill y to take the time to plant another one.

But Gabe didn 't forget about it. Finally, I gave in.

"OK," 1 said. "We'll plant it behind the sandbox."

We chose a partly sunny spot next to a rotting log.

Gabe took the shovel and began to dig.

"The hole doesn 't have to be wide ," 1 advised. "But make it deep enough for the roots." We pulled out worms, examined bugs, and pried out stubborn rocks.

When the hoie was deep enough, Gabe filled the bucket with water and emptied it into the hole. Slowly, the water soaked into the ground. I mixed fertilizer into the loose soil.

"Now it's time to plant." f slipped the seedling out of its plastic bag. "I'll hold the tree. You put the dirt back in."

"There you go, little tree," said Gabe as he tenderly scooped dirt around the roots. We marked the spot with branches so people searching for lost baseballs wouldn 't trample it by mistake.

When we were finished , we looked down at the twoinch fir. It looked perfectly at home, as if it had just spning up from a fir cone dropped from a branch hi gh above us. If trees could smile, it would be grinning at us.

"You were right, Gabe," I told him. "There is room for another tree here. I' m glad we planted it."

"Will this tree get as tal l as those?" he asked incredulously.

"Someday. When you 're about my age." I gazed at him, realizing that picturing him my age was almost as hard as p icturing this little tree being 40 feet tall. Yet I knew both

would happen someday.

Victory over the "mystery of evil" In his Holy Thursday letter to priests, Pope John Pau l II described clergy sexual abuse as an expression of the "mystery of evil" at work in the world. Some columnists scoffed that the Pope was evading the issue. In fact , he was cutting strai ght to the heart of the matter. * Christianity does not deny the reality of evil. The Catechism of the Catholic Church faces the problem squarel y: ". . . why did God not create a world so perfect that no evil could exist in it? With infinite power, God could always create something better. But with infinite wisdom and goodness God freel y willed to create a world 'in a state of jour neying ' toward its ultimate perfection " (310).

God created a world of freedom. In a world of freedom, things can and do go wrong. God's answer to that hard truth was to enter the world , in the person of his Son, to redeem the world of its evil.

The mystery of evil remains. But the mystery of evil is transformed. The Catechism again: "We firmly believe that God is master of the world and of its history. But the ways of providence are often unknown to us. Only at the end, when our partial knowledge ceases, when we see God 'face to face' [1 Corinthians 13.12], will we fully know the ways b y which — even through the dramas of evil and sin —

God has guided his creadon to that definitive Sabbath rest fcf. Genesis 2.2] for which he created heaven and earth" (314).

The Christian answer to evil , and to the fear that evil engenders, is the cross of Jesus Christ. There, the Son of God took all the evil and fear of history onto himself , offering them to God in a perfect act of obedi ence. God's answer to that obedient act was given in the resurrection of Christ. Embracing the cross of Christ in baptism and being bom again into his resurrection , we, too, are empowered to live beyond evil.

The brutality and violent death of the mid-twentieth century led many European intellectuals to the conviction that life is absurd , a constant struggle for power in which the weak are ground into the dust by the unscrupulous and the strong. What the philosophers taught and the novelists wrote about eventually seeped into the general culture , leading to all sorts of dehumanizing behavior: the abuse of alcohol and drugs; sexual promiscuity ; crass consumerism , the manipulation of others for our pleasure or convenience.

Pope John Paul II has sometimes described these behaviors as a "culture of death."

The Christian answer to the culture of death is hope.

Christian s believe that God, throug h his providence , will always bring good out of evil.

Christian hope is a virtu e, a virtu e grounded in faith. Faith is the ultimate antidote to despair. And

Faith in God's victory over evil is a truth to be believed. The Catholic Church in America today must believe that God has given us this time of Calvary for a purpose. That purpose, I suggest, is the authentic reform of the Church according to the teaching of Vatican II as authoritativel y interpreted by the pontificate of John Paul II.

SCRIPTURE ©L ITURGY On eagle's wings: Sent to share what we have received With our Catholic lists of "thou-shalts " and "thoushait-nols ," with the demands of our parish programs, and with our strategies to change unjust systems, we can easily delude ourselves into thinking that our reli gion consists in impressing God. Would we even dare think that God is in the business of impressing us? We might allow the Scripture chosen for this Sunday 's liturgy of the Word to wash over us and refresh us with the experience of God' s initiative on our behalf and the sheer gift of his never-to-be-withdrawn love.

The story teller places in God's mouth the words th at shape the performance of Moses, God's reluctant mouthp iece, and the always-in-need-of-forgiveness people whom God has selected: "You have seen for yourselves how 1 treated the Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle wings and broug ht you here to myself. Therefore , if you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant , you shall be my special possession , though all the earth is mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests , a holy nation."

God's People then and now exists because they have been invested in , delivere d, courted , and wedded by a God who loves them freely and in spite of their failings. All reveals divine initiative and favor; all reveals God' s irrevocable commitment to his people even when we would drop them and jud ge them/us unworth y. Fortunatel y for us, God's ways are not ours.

If this proclamation of such favor becomes a stone for our stomachs, Romans drives the point home poignan tly and eloquently and superbly. Hear Paul at his best: "God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us." While we had nothing to attract God's lov e, no accumulation of merit, no amazing track record to impress the All-holy, God acted through Christ on our behalf , the proof that this love is a gift.

I know the story may be something like a metap hor to help us understand the "fall " of mankind , when they disobeyed the Creator. But what do we say when asked where wives came from to marry Cain (when he was banished by the Lord to the land of Nod), Seth , Adam and Eve 's third son, etc. ?

(Massachusetts) A. 1 think we must start , even with children, to help them understand that the stories of creation in Genesis, as well as many other passages in the Bible, are not meant by God to give us historical "facts" about the beginning of the human race.

They are God's way, through deceptively. simple human stories told by the sacred authors , of revealing certain cmcial and basic facts about God .and ourselves , and about our relationship with him and each other.

Among these are the truths that God created the world out of nothing by simply commanding it to be (Genesis 1 and 2); that this creation was meant to be a blessing and delight for people; that as it came from his hands the earth was very good; that sin and other evils came, not from God or an evil power outside somewhere, but from our own hearts when we became confused and conflicted by wanting to be like God (3 and 4); and that even then God was laying the groundwork for healing and restoring us to intimacy with him.

In other words, the Genesis stories are pretty much the tale of each human bein g's spiritual journey of sinfulness, hope and reconciliation with God and other people.

We are led to this way of understanding these stories first of all by the sheer number of contradictions encountered when we try to take them absolutely literally. __ : : :

Pettingill It is this love welcomed in Word that gives us such security both now and on the final day : "How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood , will we be saved through him from the wrath (on the final day for those who do not accept this love.) Indeed if , while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more one reconciled will be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ , through whom we have now received reconciliation. " Armed with this experience of this kind of love we can feel sent to share what we have received; as Matthew puts it, "Without cost you have received; without cost you are to

give. " Matthew shows us Jesus moved with p ity for the crowd: they are "like sheep without a shepherd ;" they are a harvest without "laborers for his harvest. " Matthew then goes on to show Jesus forming the renewed Israel of God by selecting the Twelve and passing on to them/u s his powers to preach, heal and fight the forces of evil. Yes, during his lifetime, they are to go to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel." But the rest of Matthew shows a peop le learning that their message is for "all the nations."

What a wonderfu l journey Sunday 's readings propel !

We are given an experience of God's love which welcomes us and includes us in God's People. This love can never be merited or deserved. As the love converts our hearts, we begin to represent it more authentically — with few, then no, strings attached. Suddenl y we are flying, soaring, and free on "eagle wings" Questions Can you accept God' s gift love? Do you fear reprisals?

Can you represent thi s type of love? Do you have to have a return on your investment?

What to Tell Children About the Bible Cain, supposedly the son of the * first man and woman, not only marries a wife and has a son, he actuall y founds a city, made up of people from somewhere, which he names after that son, Enoch (Gen 4:17).

Just seven or eight generations later (perhaps 200 years?), descendants of Cain and Enoch are described as cattle and sheep raisers, tillers of the soil, and workers in bronze and iron, all of which (especially the last) are occupations we now know human beings only developed after many thousands of years.

Nearly 60 years ago, Pope Pius XII, in his classic encyclical on the Catholic way of interpreting the Scriptures, noted that the Bible uses all the idioms and modes of expression common to the people of the Near East. It is the scholar's task, he said, to ask where and to whom the sacred authors were writing? What literary forms did they use? Why were they writing, and what were they trying to say?

The answers to these questions leads to the key question of interpretation, says the pope: What was the author really trying to express by his writings? ("Divino Afflante Spiritu," 31-38) What I said above is the explanation which by far most Scripture scholars give to the creation stories. It will save your children lots of confusion later, and perhaps diffic ulties of faith, if you begin now to help them interpret the words of the Bible appropriately.

Q. What is the meaning of the priest washing his hands during Mass ? Some claim it represents Pila te washing his hands da ring the trial of Jesus. Others say it 's just washing, which doesn 't make a lot of sense. What is the real answer? (Indiana) A. Part of the answer seems to be that this is one part of the Mass remaining from former centuries when it had a practical significance. At the offering of the gifts , food (produce , chickens, bread, etc.) often was brought forward and given to the presiding priest for the poor or for other purposes. He needed to wash his hands afterward.

When this practical reason no longer existed, the custom continued , with spiritual interpretations given for the washing, it was said to symbolize, for example, the spiritual cleanliness appropriate for celebrating the Eucharist.

Publicly washing one's hands before a liturgical ceremony was common in older days, among Christians and others, to prepare oneself spiritually for a religious ceremony. Fountains for this purpose may still be seen in the courtyards of ancient Christian churches in Rome.

The priest 's washing at the offering of the gifts was partly an extension of that custom.

Some other traditional customs related to the Mass have similar histories. Priests used to wear over their arm, as a Mass vestment, what was called a maniple , made of cloth the color of the day. This was a vestige of the old Roman handkerchief (Latin, "mappa" or "mappula"), carried fashionably in the hand (Latin, "manus") or fastened to the arm, Thus the name maniple.

When this item ho longer served a practical purpose, it continued to be worn but was given a variety of somewhat spiritual meanings. This is the main reason a number of actions and articles formerl y connected with the Mass, but with similar histories, have been discontinued. The maniple is no longer an official part of the priest's or bishop 's Mass attire.

Q. Our parish bulletin had a note recently that canon law forb ids accepting more than one stipend for each Mass, thus ruling out multiple intentions. Some parishes have Masses said for two or three fami lies, but we are told no. Which is correct ? (Mich igan) A. I have a suspicion there is a misunderstanding here somewhere. Canon law (948) does require tiiat a separate Mass be applied for each individual offering (stipend) accepted, however small, The reason is obvious. It is to avoid an abuse in which a priest might accept numerous stipends for one Mass.

This does not prohibit, however, one offering made for a group of people, even for several families . Mass intentions commonly are listed for the family of Joe and Mary Gray, the Girl Scouts, married couples of the parish, those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack and so on. There is nothing wrong or against church policy in doing so.

Mercy sisters honored Mercy Sisters Suzanne Toolan, Mary Ann Scofield, and Margueri te Buchanan , were honored at a special dinner to celebrate the 20th Anniversary Year of Mercy Center in Burlingame, "Without these three sisters, Mercy Center would be a p lot of land in Burlingame," Mercy Associate Sherron Sandrini told 200 people who gathered Apri l 30, for Evening Prayer sung by Claire Giovanetti, an alumna of Mercy High School , Burlingame, and Bill Goehri ng of Mercy Center.

Sister Mary-Ann introduced the spiritual direction program to the West Coast. She has taken the program to Thailand , Lithuania , Kenya , Alaska , and Hawaii. • Sandra Lommassen, director of the Bread of Life Center in Sacramento , called her "sister, friend of God , follower of Jesus , befriender of souls, spiritual director, discerning mentor, compassionate friend , prop hetic witness, beloved of God , lover of the world God loves."

Sister Marguerite has made Mercy Center "internationall y known and the cutting edge of spirituality, " said staff member Mercy Sister Lorita .Moffatt. "She has an ability to breathe deeply and absorb what is useful in a variety of traditions while remaining rooted in her own." Jesuit Father Tom Hand praised her for her "boldness, originality, and loving kindness."

Sister Suzanne began Mercy Center after 30 years of teaching at Mercy High School. "We have all experienced music that can express a deep haunting sorrow or lift us lo the heights of ecstasy, even lead us by the musical equivalent of a whisper in the cleft of a rock to experience God's presence," Sister Diane Grassilli said, "This is the gift that Suzanne shares."

The archdiocesan School of Pastoral Leadershi p will present a workshop on "Sacraments of Healing: Eucharistic Ministry to the Homebound ," Saturday, June 29 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday June 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Churc h , Balboa and 40th Street in San Francisco Ruth Hayes-Barba , director of the Office of Ministry to the Aging in the Archdiocese of Portland will focus on Pope John Paul IPs 1980 encyclical , Dives In Misercordia (Rich in Mercy). Among other things , the encyclical seeks to explain the relationshi p between Mercy Love, and Justice as found in the Old Testament and revealed in the Gospels through the words and deeds of Jesus Christ.

Ms. Hayes-Barba, a licensed social worker, holds a masters degree in theology and has provided training

throug hout the United States. She has worked in prisons, hospitals , and nursing homes. She will offer explanations of the Sacraments of Reconciliation , Anointing of the Sick, and the practical aspects of ministering to the homebound.

Reviewed b y Graham G. Yearley Catholic News Service . All textbooks instruct , some entertain, and a few — and only a very few — change lives. "Alcoholics Anonymous," affectionatel y called the "Big Book" by AA members, is one of those rare textbooks that does all three. It teaches, inspires and promotes life-altering changes. It also resists qualitative judgments; no sensible reviewer would pass jud gment on this book any more than on the Bible or the Quran.

The first edition of "Alcoholics Anonymous" was published in 1939, a mere four years after the first meeting of Bill Wilson and "Dr. Bob" Smith in Akron, Ohio, which gave birth to AA. Traditionally the authorship of the fust edition is credited to 100 of the earliest members of AA, but the actual writing was done, for the most part , by Bill Wilson. In the fust 164 pages, the early members outline the spiritual program of the Twelve Steps with, other chapters devoted to the families of alcoholics and their employers. These first 164 pages have remained unaltered tlrrough all of the succeeding editions of the "Big Book."

"Oldtimers" in AA, many with 30 and 40 years of sobriety, are no less astonished than newcomers to the program that no one involved in the compiling of "Alcoholics Anonymous" had more than four or five years of sobriety.

AAs insight into the nature of alcoholism as a disease was particularly farsighted, as the idea generally was not accepted by the medical profession in' the 1930s . Even more radical was the conviction of AA members that only a spiritual awakening, a dependence on a higher power, could lead to sustained sobriety and that each alcoholic might choose a higher power of his or her own liking. .

The changes in this new fourth edition come in the second major portion of the "Big Book," a collection of stories of individual members of AA. In 1939 most AA members were male, white and Protestant, but as the program grew, so did the variety of its members. With each new edition of the "Big Book," stories have been added and older ones subtracted. Stories of African-Americans, Native Americans, Catholics and women appeared in the second and third editions. In this new edition there is a second story of Native Americans and new stories of Jewish, gay and teen-age members.

Dominican Sister Mary of the Trinity dies at 91 Dominican Sister Mary of the Trinity, a member ot Corpus Christi Monastery in Menlo Park for 60 years , died May 24 at the age of 91.

Sister Mary of the Trinit y was born Catherine Antoinette Musante in San Francisco on March 24, 1911.

She attended St. Bri g id' s Academy h ere and earned bachelor 's and master 's degrees from Stanford University. She went on to teach at Flintrid ge School for Girl s in Pasadena and at San Francisco City College. She was active in the theater and as a singer , p ianist and interpretive dancer.

In 1942, she entered Corpus Christi Monastery and look the name of Sister Mary of the Trinity when she received the Dominican habit. " She became a model of humilit y and

contemp lative prayer ," Dominican Sister Mary of the Sacre d Heart said. "She was able to use her musical abilities lo glori fy God as liturg ist and chantress . .. and her fluency in several languages made it possible for her to translate many philosop hical and theological works for publication. " Sister Mary of the Trinity served for 18 years as prioress of the monastery. She was also active on the international level , serving on a commission that produced new constitutions for Dominican nuns worldwide following the Second Vatican Council.

As her health failed in recent years, she moved from Menlo Park to the infirmary residence of the Sisters of the Hol y Famil y in San Jose. She died there May 24.

Sister Immaculee Walsh. BVM. dies at 93

Long-time San Francisco educator Sister Immaculee Walsh , a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virg in Mary, BVM , died June 2 at Marian Hall , Dubuque , Iowa. She was 93.

Sister Immaculee taug ht Eng lish and French at St. Paul Hi gh School for 37 years - from 1 928-35 , 1944-47 , and 1964-91. In retirement , she lived at St. Paul Hi gh School convent from 1991-96, when she moved to the BVM

Motherhouse in Dubuque. Sister Immaculee also taug ht hi gh school in Colorado , Iowa and Illinois.

She was born Jul y 14, 1908 in Chicago and graduated from Immaculata Hi g h School before entering the BVM congregation on Sept. 8, 1926.

She is survived by nieces and the Sisters of Charity, BVM. Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund.

Denver's Archbishop Chaput to speak on evangelization Archbishop Charles J. Chaput , OFM Cap, of Denver will deliver a keynote address on evangelization Saturday, June 22 , at a School of Pastoral Leadershi p recognition day in St. Mary 's Cathedral.

Archbishop Chaput will answer such questions as "What does it reall y mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today ? What does it mean to 'make dis'all' cip les ' of nations? How is this relevant to lay ministry in the Church today?"

The keynote address beg ins at 8:45 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by Mass and a recognition ceremony for students who have comp leted their studies at the School of Pastoral Leadership. The day will conclude with lunch. The event is open to all.

Archbishop Chaput will discuss the familiar ways by which evangelization happens: "by the way we live God' s love in our daily lives; by the Jove , example, and support people give each other; and by the ways parents pass on the faith to

their children; in our life as Church , throug h the proclamation of the Word and the wholehearted celebration of the saving deeds of Jesus; in renewal efforts of local and national scope; in the care we show to those most in need; in the ways we go about our work; share with our nei ghbors; and treat the stranger."

The Pauline Sisters will be on site with copies of Archbishop Chaput 's new book "Living the Catholic Faith: Rediscovering the Basics. " A reviewer said , "This slim volume is based on a series of talks given by the Archbishop during the Jubilee Year. It covers most of the hot topics that form the basis of discussion within the Churc h and between the various faith communities; but it does so in the language of the average person.
